Overall I like the concept, but it's a ♥♥♥♥♥ implemented. Weapon differences, moving, positioning, are all supposed to give you various benefits. I can't get behind a game where, using all the suggestions they provide, my machine gun vs, their shot gun, taking two complete turns while sitting still, aimed in his direction and focusing on the shotgun guy, my guy still never takes the shot. The shot gun guy comes around the corner, moves into his own range, and in all that time, my machine gunner never even pulls the trigger once. Not even when within machine gun range, and out of shotgun range... Just sits there... like an absolute nothing, while the shot gunner finally comes into his own range and blasts him. Gave up after 3 or 4 missions, because it's just to random.
Linux port doesn't work - No sound -> Go to windows - The sign in doesn't work - Why this game even needs a sign in? - No one knows. - You try sending emails to the support team and no one answers - and all of these problems have persisted for years
Overall just an unbearable headache to even start to play the game. And for that reason probably the worst experience of any game on steam.

I like the concept and overall is okay but is a bit fiddly in the way it's implemented and I really dislike the pause with progress bar while it processes each turn. I played through the whole campaign and there is not much variation. Overall I'm not a huge fan of this.

Frozen Synapse is the closest thing to chess I've played with actual soldiers — every five-second turn demands careful prediction of your opponent's moves, and the satisfaction of watching a perfectly laid plan execute flawlessly is unlike anything else in the genre. The minimalist aesthetic, all glowing blues and greens, cuts out every distraction and keeps your focus exactly where it needs to be: on the angles, the timing, and the decisions. The soundtrack is genuinely excellent and perfectly complements the tense planning phases. It's unforgiving and can demand a lot of patience — sometimes an uncomfortable amount — but if you go in knowing it plays more like a tactical puzzle than a traditional strategy game, you'll find something special here. Highly recommended, especially on sale.

Ah, well... At least I tried it. The UI is workable, it becomes quite fiddly when placing multiple orders so I defaulted to giving as few as possible. The most infuriating thing was how sometimes units would stop taking orders altogether. You could delete all orders and remake them, but they'd just stand there without acting on anything. "Ignore on sight, move here" turns to "I'll stand here and do nothing." That and the fact that generating turns is just a loading screen. With these few moments I had together with Frozen Synapse I can say that it is clunky. For the story I can say that the extent of it is that it explains why the game looks so bare in presentation.
With how cheap this feels, I'm not very surprised how the second game apparently turned out. Haven't played that one and certainly won't either.
Almost forgot: I'm colourblind and the units were impossible to discern from each other. I couldn't tell which was the enemy and which was an ally. BUT! There is a custom colour-selection option. Good stuff. The idea of the game is good and has been made better elsewhere, but it's great that there was that option for me to change colours in this one, as it really is just two coloured stick-figure teams competing on a blue background.
One of the best turn based games I've played in awhile, I was getting destroyed in the beginning coming from XCom 2 my playstyle was way to aggressive but after learning the mechanics this was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in awhile. While the UI is minimal, it clearly conveyed all the information I needed to make thought out tactical decisions. You can find this one for cheap and its worth checking out.
Hidden gem of a turn-based tactics game; its simple graphics manage to hold an infinitely intricate web of strategy. If you're a competitive person looking for a deep game to master, this game hits that addiction perfectly. Frozen Synapse is a good game pretty difficult since in the game pretty much every battle will be different due to it having random generated levels in skirmish making every enemy and even walls and covers in different positions ensuring different tactics will be used in every play this also applies in the campaign mode however only the enemies will be placed on different spots on the map however i still haven't really touched it long enough to really be sure since i only played the first level the skirmish is pretty much enough. Frozen synapse also has a multiplayer mode i didn't tried it but its there don't know if there's players. If were talking about visuals its all going to be blue which consists both the wall and the background that's all you ever see in this game except in the DLC which is red and the Shapeforms ( the units you will command or battle) which consist of red and green Honestly it fits since they're digital in the lore. Frozen synapse though quite old still holds up to be a great turn based tactics game second to door kickers.

It's a tactics game yet its missions punish the player for not luckily guessing enemy spawns?
I don't understand throwing luck into a strategy game, but whatever, it's decently enjoyable nonetheless although I'm not partial to pvp. I really can't be assed to give it more than a few hours of my time each play session because it's just trial and error on randomly generated missions with a dice-roll chance to win.
Or, you know, i just suck, there's that too.
Music's really the main draw to this game, the gameplay is secondary.

This game was designed by joyless pedants with zero sense of how to design a game like this. Why design a game where every click must be a meticulous decision when the enemy just RNG-swarms your location, and your teammates just rush out to die?

Still the best tactics game I’ve played
It's good, but you have to want to play this kind of puzzle game. I just end up accidentally speedrunning losing all my guys in the first 3 seconds (literally). Some really dated menu and option systems, I don't even know if you can change parameters for the quick skirmishes. There's a story campaign and the writing actually seems really interesting but I'm not good enough at the game to experience it.
Awesome game, created the entire genre that is now popularized by titles like Breach & Clear, Breach & Clear: Deadline, and No Plan B. Excellent, strategic gameplay, an incredible amount of ways for each level to play out, a high skill ceiling, you can be as intricate, well thought out, and professional as you want to be here, as you're given every action and tool you need to lay out your best plans, check your corners, and take the shots.
Highly recommended, even after all this time.
For ~$6 it's a fine enough game. I think it has a few hours worth of enjoyment to it. Unfortunately, the micromanagement becomes tedious quickly. Might be fun enough. I got it on sale quite a while ago. For ~$12 though it's not worth it.

A micromanagement intensive turn based tactics game. Each turn you tell your units where to go, which direction to face, whether to engage an enemy en route, and how long to wait before moving. General objectives include defending an area, capturing an area, escorting VIPs, eliminating all enemies, and capturing/escaping with certain items.

[*]I'm convinced that enemy movements are somewhat based on your inputs. I've had an enemy sit in cover and pin down one of my units for 3 straight turns, only moving to turn around when I get another unit in proximity to flank.
[*]Missions are randomized to a degree - making victory either much easier or harder depending on the layout and enemy position. When you have to storm a position of 5 snipers with 3 shotgunners the initial positioning can make all the difference between cover between you and no man's land.
[*]Mission objectives don't have enough variety. With there being an apparent 55 levels in the campaign, most of them consist of you commanding only a handful of units and eliminating the enemy.
[*]Setting up your units commands can be tedious, and waiting for the active turn to load into the scenario every single time is obnoxiously long.

For such a long campaign the gameplay loop itself does get tedious. I'd have liked bigger encounters with more soldiers on both sides to deal with, or perhaps ways to upgrade my own soldiers for increased speed or accuracy. For what it is, it is well made and delivers on what it promises, even if it is a little plodding.

I'm not much of a PvP / Internet match guy -- but I really enjoyed the mission variety of the single-player campaign. The story is a little convoluted and meh - but I'm not sure you play this to find a mind-bending plot. I strongly recommend visiting the strategy guide/wiki to learn the underlying mechanics of what wins over what (first sight, range, etc.,) or the missions become complete guess-work. (I really struggled before I knew what I was doing and there is some nice eye-candy firing effects that mask the ultimate fate of a unit given the conditions (victory in a gunfight is not random...)

The gameplay is too vague for me to understand.
This is a game that PC Gamer recommended, so I thought I'd give it a go. You have to do a lot of thinking and planning, giving orders to your squad ahead of time, trying to anticipate what moves your opponent might make, a little like Chess. If you like this turn-based style of play, then you'll enjoy it. On the other hand, if you prefer to rely on lightning-fast reflexes, then this probably isn't the game for you!
While fun, the game crashes several times per hour
Easy to learn, difficult to master. It's a nitty-gritty technical game, and it's a shame it doesn't have a slightly more dynamic gamemode. But it's good for what it is, it's priced accordingly, and it's a breath of fresh air in the world-building and visual design.

THe game could not hold my interest long.
The most notable thing about this game vs. other turn-based tactics titles is how thoroughly it tries to strip away RNG at every turn (pun intended) from a genre which normally includes it in frequent doses. A lack of variety/depth vs. other turn-based tactics games such as X-Com or Jagged Alliance (most obviously with how those include a strategic layer across missions) kept this from holding my attention for as many months. But if you don't mind the exactness of mouse positioning or timing decisions making all the difference between how your moves play out vs. the singleplayer enemies or online competitors, this could be a refreshing change for you to try out. Also helps that it supports asynchronous PBEM style versus matches.
Even more than resuming where I left off in singleplayer with the main campaign, I'd be interested to try out co-op in the Red DLC, but haven't yet been able to make the time to find & play it with friends.

Always loved the elegant simplicity of the play. Looks simple, but endless possibilities with the variety of map layouts and characters. After thousands of plays, a win is never a sure thing even vs a novice. I've been to #1 global at least 3 times, but my policy of playing every single game, no matter how unfavorable a spawn, keeps me humble. Beautiful game!

Battle chess is a great name for this. It combines the tactical, methodical planning of rainbow six with the unit movement of a small-scale real time strategy. This game is easy to approach and difficult to master, but I'll tell you it kept my roommates and I enamored for months. Not to mention the asynchronous multiplayer is a brilliant mechanic that makes you excited to open it up and see how your games are going.
Well . . . I like and recommend this game . . . even though I dislike several of the design decisions.
What I like:
* Tactics that make sense, match the weapons and situations, involve facing and body positions, etc
* Terrain effects, cover
* Turn-based orders planning with well-done "we-go" simultaneous turn resolution
* Unpredictability of combat results
* Deadly lethality
* Violence and mayhem
* Humor
* Dead bodies, rubble and gore left on the battlefield
* Campaign play
* Interesting setting
Design decisions I didn't like (usually these would end my interest, but this game is good enough that I'll keep enjoying it):
* Campaigns that have no branches for failures on missions. (e.g. Oops, the person we were supposed to protect got killed, because we missed a shot and they didn't. Ok, cool, the important NPC is dead? Now what? Well, apparently now we can't play the campaign any more, except by pretending that didn't happen, and replaying. I HATE SAVESCUM CAMPAIGNS LIKE THIS! I want to play out the situation with that NPC dead, and have there be adventures for that situation. It utterly destroys my immersion and care about what happens if the game forces you to savescum or quit.
* The soldiers are all just nameless automatons. It doesn't seem to matter at all if any of them have particular success, or if any of them die, as long as you don't fail a scenario - and if you fail a scenario, you just get no option besides stopping playing (what I usually do with games with this design), or savescumming, pretending it didn't happen, because the game doesn't have any kind of gameplay or even statistics about your failures.
* Therefore, the campaign is only a series of one-off tactical scenarios, with apparently no continuity or anything to care about other that savescumming your way through them. Ugh. I got this game because I thought it was a REAL dynamic campaign, not a series of scenarios pretending to be a campaign.
* On the tactical level, there is no fog of war, except about what the opponents will do. Both you and the AI know where every foe is, what they're armed with, where they're facing. So that alters tactics to be about out-guessing enemies based on that info. I dislike that, and would much rather both sides had incomplete information, so you could sneak up, etc. (Instead, if you do what would make sense, and set up strong fighting positions and stay in them, the AI will see where you are, and plot moves to find ways around to shoot you in the back, because it sees where you are. Ugh.)
* The rocket launchers with unlimited ammo that can fire a shot each turn, are a bit much.
OK, it may be old.
And noone is playing it.
And the controls are clunky.
But I like it.

I loved playing this game with friends, but sadly I had a tough time convincing more people to buy it so we could play together. The tactical/strategy element is a lot of fun.

A fun but challenging turn based game, where the turns happen at the same time, as it should. Great for multiplayer.
Honestly. a bit outdated but a true classic/ I cant not mention the music, the music SLAPS. This game is such a vibe when you enter deep focus. It offers a chess like form of multiplayer, whete you send and update your turns over days. The singleplayer is pretty good too. This game is also hard, prepare to suffer too
Didn't age too well. Massive amount of annoying loading screens. Bad on-boarding and a steep gameplay curve that scares off new players. Randomization also doesn't seem like the best choice over actual playtested, playable, hand-crafted scenarios. Often feels like you aren't making any real progress when failing a scenario due to random generation. The storytelling is appreciated but dated, feels like reading a long needlessly complicated book.
Despite all of this, it's addicting and I somehow spent 30+ hours on it. Recommend.
Played this when it came out, need to try it again.
Single player is way too luck-based. I was expecting puzzles, but the campaign levels have randomised starting layouts and the AI acts unpredictable.
Only buy if you have friends to do the multiplayer with.

전술 전략 게임 중 상당한 수작인 프로즌 시냅스입니다.
생각보다 지시해야할 게 많고 복잡하지만 그만큼 자세하게 캐릭터에게 지시를 내려야한다는 점이 호불호가 갈릴 듯 합니다.
캠페인 위주로만 플레이를 했는데 일정 시간이 지나버리면 자꾸 리셋이 되어버리는 이유를 아직 잘 모르겠습니다..
캐릭터에게 지시하는게 조금 불편한 느낌이라 (그만큼 자세해서 좋았습니다) 약간만 개선되면 더 재미있게 할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

interesting game. pretty cool stuff. i plan to play more i'll give a more detailed review when i do but running the tutorial and some of the early game i was having fun.

Controls and UI are somewhat dated by today's standards, and the game is much more "free-form" than I remembered but it still is a fun tactical game to play all around.

A simple, yet engaging and tactical, combat simulator. The soundtrack is fantastic and the graphical style adds to the atmospheric feel of the game. I've really enjoyed it.
Fantastic game. The strategy and tactics are amazing. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes terrain doesn't update and my units walk strangely. It's also not very informative as to what does and doesn't contribute to winning an engagement.
