Flynn: Son of Crimson is a 2D Action Platformer about Flynn, the boy with the crimson hair who sets out on a mission to retrieve the guardian spirits that were taken away from his companion Dex.

The game offers a linear based stage system filled with secrets and crystals to collect, you can then use the crimson crystals collected to purchase upgrades to become stronger and unlocked new combos, Health upgrades...etc

The combat system is fun which relies on juggling and smashing your enemies as well as mastering different elements that will help you during your journey.

The Pixel art was really fascinating as well as the sprites of the surrounding environment, the enemies and the NPCs. There was so much love put into making this.

The journey from the beginning till the end was and I enjoyed so much in 101% the game, yup you read that right, there's an achievement related to everything else and getting all collectibles while allows to go beyond 100%.

The music and OST was a classic and really enjoyable to listen to during this amazing journey.

Boss fights requires quick reactions and dodging abilities as far to what I've seen, they didn't pose much threat or challenge but at the same time can get you frustrating if the boss interrupts your rhythm of combos you're landing.

It's a very recommended 2D Action Platformer. It's really a short must played journey that will definitely enjoy and especially if you're a big fan of this genre.

I had this recommended to me by a few friends who are huge metroidvania fans like me. Even though this game isn't a metroidvania, which they told me in advance, i was still blown away by it. I do think that if this game had been a proper metroidvania it would have been even more amazing but it was still great as is. This game just hits all the marks for me, smooth controls, fun combat, great visuals and amazing music all wrapped in a deviously addictive & short package. Since this is a linear action platformer though i would say the focus is definately on combat which starts out simple but effective. You initially have a basic attack combo with 3 hits and a range spell that you can quickfire or charge, suplemented by a heal and dodge which also works mid air.

It doesn't stay that way though since you have a multitude of unlockable attacks in your skilltree which notably increase your arsenal. They are very powerful tool but come at the cost of energy which you can recharge with basic attacks. On a full bar you can unleash a rage mode for a while that's both incredibly overpowered and satisfying to use. Most enemies don't require much of this though as the game is pretty easy but it's still fun to go ham on enemies. Speaking of enemies there were unfortunately not that many different kinds to fight but each one was still fun and engaging. The bosses were the real highlights though but they didn't pose much of a challenge either. This is fine for me though as not every game has to be brutally difficult as is seemingly the norm nowadays.

You won't struggle with platforming too much either as it's all pretty straightforward which didn't get boring as the game manages to keep platforming engaging throughout. The excellent level design uses many level specific mechanics that keep the game fresh during exploration. The controls also feel very smooth although the wall jump you unlock in the final few levels does feel a tad clunky. Not a dealbreaker though as there's no particularly difficult sections that push this mechanic. On a final note in regards to exploration, most levels have one collectible to find which is well telegraphed and gives a bunch of currency which you can use to unlock the aforementioned new moves. This created a satisfying progression loop and made exploration feel rewarding.

If anything you wanna keep going just to see all the sights as this game has absolutely beautiful pixel art and a wide range of environments. The visuals really pop and it's super colourfull even in the darker environments, i took many screenshots while playing but even more beautiful than the art was the music. The music in Flynn is simply amazing, it felt so upbeat and melodic which made it all feel very heroic in a nostalgic sort of way. I'll be picking up the OST later for sure. In terms of story it was a pretty standard affair, nothing incredible but not bad either. It was just okay but performance and degree of polish were great. The real reason to play this though is the fun gameplay and incredible visuals & music. Worth the price of admission despite the lenght, but certainly worth it on a sale!

Flynn and his trusty partner Dex are tasked with preventing the invasion of their beloved world by Zealock, an evil entity determined to destroy everything Flynn loves. It's honestly a pretty generic story and certainly never motivated me to continue purely based on that merit alone, but luckily, there were plenty of other things that kept me going!

Firstly, I [b]loved[/b] the hand drawn graphics! The locations you visit aren't exactly unique, but they were vibrant, and felt full of life regardless. I looked forward to seeing what the next stage looked like just to see how cool it was visually. To accompany the graphics, the soundtrack is awesome! I enjoyed a lot of the tunes and I was even humming along to some of them at one point. They fit the levels well and I also looked forward to hearing what came next!

This next point is a bit of a mixed bag for me. Combat wasn't great outside of boss fights if I'm being honest. There are 3 weapons to choose from and while they do offer some variety, they didn't feel like anything special. I did appreciate the skill tree as it did open up combat [i]some[/i] but it definitely needed more. Frankly, I skipped fighting most enemies unless I had to because it became a simple cycle of wait for attack, dodge, and then strike. Over and over. It got tired after a while...

I mentioned the boss fights and I gotta say they were a highlight for me! Every boss had a fun arena to battle in and they all offered their own attack sets that were challenging. Zealock himself was an awesome final boss too and it certainly helped to end the game in a really fun way!

I spoke a little about Dex, Flynn's companion and the guardian of Rosantica, the world of they live in. I bring this up because early on something story related happens and Dex is taken out of action for a long time...and it just seemed silly. I would have preferred to be able to have her by my side more often. Having a bar that fills and gaining more access to Dex would have been a better option in my opinion cause limiting it sucked.

Flynn: Son of Crimson is a fun, solid game. It doesn't do anything spectacular but it does enough things right! Great visuals with a soundtrack that matches, fun boss fights, and just enough variety in the levels/action to keep things interesting. The story is lacking, and the combat isn't always great, but those shortcomings weren't too bad honestly. I'm going to recommend this game, but I'll say maybe wait for a sale first if you're on the fence! [b]Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐/5[/b] (3/5)

~9 hours, 100% Achievements (very easy to do).
So, Flynn: Son of Crimson is actually a really good Game.
It is a level based 2D Action-Platformer with VERY light Metroidvania elements.
Pixel Art is very nice, the Music is REALLY good and Gameplay is simple yet satisfying.
The controls are tight, Combat feels impactful, the abilities and weapons were fun.
Story-wise it's engaging enough.
The Game does nothing really that special but is extremely competent in what it does.
Also it had a perfect length and didn't overstay it's welcome.

Overall really nice and a total recommend.

enemy animations and concepts are very strong. character designs slap. the red hair and red weapons are just cool. when you geek out and go berserk or whatever it's called you feel really OP.

it did get a little boring/repetitive at times, especially in the beginning, like most mvanias do. i walked away from it, but every so often i pick it back up and play a little more of it because it's got personality.

Pros:
- challenging
- in built god mode to help with the challenging parts
- good combat wise
- good pricing, especially on sale
- there are YT walkthrough videos to help clear the game
- decent amount of content. Took me 7 hours to complete (including time that I paused the game to check on the YT walkthrough video)

Cons:
the following are a few points I find annoying about the game. Not horrible, but annoying.
- there is a scourge level mechanic which forces you to clear a corrupted level before you can progress further into the game
- the plaforming part of the game is not smooth at all. The wall jump introduced is janky, no double jump in mid air, and the roll is NOT a good substitute for a dash. Due to this, I got softlocked and had to restart the whole level after getting stuck at a certain point of the level if I missed something
- underwater levels are not fun, I basically rush through the levels for it. It has this fish which spits out air bubbles behind you so you have to preiodically move back a bit to collect the air bubble then move forward again or you will die regardless the enabled god mode

Conclusion:
Not a bad game if you can bear with the annoying aspects of the game.

A nice little game that’s pretty fun. It’s not that hard to 100% and get all achievements. The combat is very simple but it feels pretty good once you unlock a few moves and weapons. I really like level based platformers. I play so many Metroidvanias that it feels like almost every 2D platformer is one. This is a good simple level based platformer.

Flynn is the typical jump-and-attack platformer that quickly becomes repetitive. The gameplay relies heavily on the same cycle of jumping, attacking, and jumping again, without offering much variety to keep things interesting. While the visuals and style might appeal, the overall experience becomes boring far too quickly. It’s one of those games I honestly regret buying because of how monotonous it feels after just a short time. There’s little motivation to continue playing, and nothing truly stands out to make it memorable or engaging. For these reasons, I do not recommend this game.

This is a cute platformer with beautiful pixel graphics. I bought this game so I could play with Dex the dog but admittedly, due to to the story, I didn't get to that much, which ended up being fine as there is weapon and spell variety that makes the game fun. The soundtrack hits surprisingly hard and the levels don't feel too samey. I think the your ultimate ability is a bit overpowered in the early game but scales nicely into the late game. About a 6 hour play that isn't too difficult. I'm going to try the challenge levels to see how they fair and the 100% steam achievement looks feasible. 8/10.

A perfectly serviceable little action platformer. Really don't have too much to say on this one. It's not the most amazing game out there, and there's pretty much nothing unique about it, but for what it is, I had fun. If dev ever makes a sequel, I'd check it out, hopefully with more dog next time around. Despite being the crux of what little plot there is in the game, the dog feels very underutilized. There's a few dog-riding sections which are fun, but that's about it. Anyway, if you like this type of game, go for it.

Karakterimizin kullanbileceği 3 farklı silahı var, ufak bir geliştirme ağacından daha uzun kombolar, ufak tefek hareketler açabiliyorsunuz ancak hem düşman çeşitliliği, hem de oyunun yapısı gereği, genel düşmanlar, bosslar 1-2 hareket yapıyor. Çok az dikkat ettiğinizde oyunu ölmeden bitirmeniz çok olası.

J'ai terminé le jeu 6 mars 2024 et j'en garde un souvenir assez banal.

Les niveaux sont bien, la plateforme aussi, pareil pour les combats. Tout est bien... mais rien n'est [i]mieux[/i] que bien ni mémorable. Enfin si, je me souviens avoir vu les trailers et être hypé avant la sortie du jeu -- et je me souviens aussi du level design et des différents environnements (qui sont très beaux !), mais en vrai, le souvenir que j'ai du jeu est plutôt désenchanté. J'ai pas eu [i]ce truc[/i], aucun déclic. Le jeu à des qualités indéniables et il est très soigné (on dirait un jeu de plateforme de MegaDrive, j'adore !), mais j'ai pas cette sensation de "je m'en souviendrais" : ça fait un an, je me souviens vaguement -- et en même temps j'ai pas besoin d'un truc moins vague pour que tout me revienne et que je me dise "ah oui c'est vrai, j'ai fais ça comme ça".

Peut-être que la seule raison pour laquelle je m'en souviens, c'est que j'ai inauguré le SteamDeck dessus et que c'est vraiment un jeu qui passe super bien en mode portable, un petit jeu que tu lances tous les soirs 30 minutes et tu passes un super moment avant de te coucher. Un petit jeu détente.

It's a tentative recommend. It's perfectly competent but never exciting and I made the mistake of getting about halfway through it before Silksong came out and trying to come back after that was really hard(totally my fault I know). It's not really fair to compare most Metroidvainias to SIlksong so taken on it's own merits it alright. Combat is very...slow feeling but serviceable. Overall I'd say the games like a 6.5 to a 7. Grab it on sale

Frankly, this game faeks like a cult favorite GBA game. One that I often wished looked like one as well, with a LCD shader.

It's simple yet richly varied, and always fun.

The walljumping input us very frustrating though. Really wish I didn't have to keep moving towards a wall to trigger it, especially since it's limited to a specific weapon anyway.

A pixel art aqui é linda demais, muito bem feita e fiquei as quase 10H de jogo impressionado com isso. É um jogo de plataforma/ação bem básico com a típica jornada do herói, a diferença é que dá pra fazer uns combinhos aqui com as 3 armas, espada, machado e garras, que são uma delicia de se jogar! Porém, na metade, o jogo se torna muito fácil, tanto que só passei perrengue em 2 dos 6 chefões que tem aqui, já que em pouco tempo dá pra ter muita poção no rabo e spammar contra eles, além do modo berserk do Flynn.
Mas a jogabilidade é tão fluída que nem ligo dos chefões ficarem meio buxa.
(se tivesse uma HQ desse jogo eu leria na hora, pq a história é tão simples que se torna legal e seria daora uma espécie de continuação)

The game is pretty good pixel art 2D Action-Platformer. The story is a generic "the chosen one young boy has to save the world from a demonic invasion", the art style is beautiful, music is good and the combat does its job.

[h2] Story 6/10 [/h2]

I know some people believe that the story in a video game is like the story in a pron movie: it's expected to be there, but it's not that important. I strongly disagree, I like well written stories in video games.
The story in Flynn SoC is a very stereotypical: You are the chosen one that unlocks some magical power destined for him and you're supposed to save the world from a dark lord.
I'm not bothered by the fact that the story is generic good vs evil stuff, especially since this game is meant for a family friendly audience. What I dislike about it is that the stereotypical characters are not memorable at all. In a classic good vs evil story, you should end up really hating the bad faction and get very attached to the good faction. Maybe some people get attached to the dog, but that's it. Other than the dog, every other character is forgettable.
The game features a few comic book style pixel art "cutscenes" after key plot points. I think they are a cute although cheaply drawn, there is no animation to them.

[h2] Graphics 9/10 [/h2]

I think the game is one of the most beautiful pixel art games out there. Definitely one of the most beautiful platformers, somewhat below Owlboy. Other than the basic combat gameplay, this is the other main selling point.
The animations are funny and cute, exactly how a cartoonish family firendly game should be. I really liked them.
My main gripe with the visuals is that there are 2 parts of the game where it gets so dark that you can't see much. It made me play those sections very slow and carefully. I believe they should have polished those sections a bit more.
I might have ranked the graphics 10/10 if there were some interesting shader effects, but there is nothing of that sort.

The music is pretty good, although nothing out of the ordinary. It's sort of generic video game orchestra, done better than most 2D platformers.
The sound effects are good, but I would have preferred them to be more punchy and memorable.

[b] Overall Impression [/b]
The game mixes platforming sections with combat section. The basic combat sections are the main selling point of the game.
The difficulty seems well balanced. The game looks like a family friendly game, so the normal mode isn't that difficult. I didn't play on hard or easy so I can't comment on them.
I think that the pacing of the game is quite good.
What I didn't like about it was that it somehow felt like a missed opportunity at times. I get the feeling that the game quickly ran out of the kickstarter money so the devs had to rush the game. The gameplay gets more fun towards the end of the game once you unlock more of the abilities.
Perhaps if the devs had more it, they would have stretched the last part of the game, but they had to eventually release it. It was 4 years in development after the Kickstarter, and I don't know how long it was in development before it. Eventually forcing yourself to ship a game is a reality so many game devs face.

[b] Platforming [/b]
Unfortunately, the few platforming sections of this title are quite uninspired. There's no movement abilities besides basic running+jumping: no sprint, no double jump, no air dash, no grappling hook. There is feather fall and wall jump, but you get them so late in the game that they might as well not be there at all. Other than that, there are moving on a horizontal rope sections and late in the game a sort of hook hang, nothing too interesting. There is a dodge+jump, but there's rarely any need for it.
There are a few swimming sections, and they are as boring as most swimming sections in 90% of games that have them.
You can unlock the ability to ride the dog towards the end of the game, but there's nothing that interesting in riding and jumping with him other than dashing through blocks and enemies.

[b] Basic Combat [/b]
This is what you'll be doing [b] most of the time [/b]. I quite liked the combat. It's your generic attack & dodge action-platformer combat.
Other than normal attacks, you have special crimson attacks.
As some reviewers have stated previously, the combat system can get boring at times. Attack & dodge does get somewhat boring, but I don't know how you could go about making it more interesting. There are the special attacks, but because it doesn't take that much time to kill a basic enemy with normal attacks, I ended up conserving crimson for harder enemies and I rarely used special attacks. I also would conserve crimson energy because I mostly used it for the fully charged state (like the Devil Trigger from Devil May Cry).
Overall, the combat system is pretty good for a 7.5h game that doesn't overstay its welcome.

[b] Dog Combat [/b]
There are very few sections where you can fight enemies while riding the dog. I liked the dog fighting sections initially, especially since the animations look pretty cool. But they are very simplistic.
However, there's extremely few dog riding fighting sections. It seems like a missed opportunity.
There is no boss that you can fight while riding the dog. Another missed opportunity the game has.

[b] Melee Weapons [/b]
There are 3 melee weapons in the game: a sword with medium attack time, a slower battle axe and fast claws. I can see why a good player would change them based on the enemy type when going for normal attacks, but the crimson attacks feel a little samey. I think it's quite a shame (when considering the effort that went into drawing each attack frame) that the game didn't do something more interesting with each crimson attack per weapon type.

[b] Ranged Weapons [/b]
The fact that you can charge a ranged attack while melee attacking adds a little bit of depth to the combat. Some ranged attacks stun enemies and you can be a little strategic when using the charged attacks.
A major issues is that by having 4 ranged weapons and there being only 1 button to scroll through them, it takes a long time you scroll for your desired ranged weapon and breaks the fast combat flow.

[b] World Structure [/b]
Initially, the game had a Kickstarter campaign in September 2017 where they designed it as a metroidvania and eventually released in September 2021 (oh boy.. I know game development takes A LOT of time, I'm a game dev myself and I can forgive the devs for taking such a long time to release it).
During later in development, the devs changed it from being a metroidvania to a world map level select structure similar to something like Shovel Knight / Super Mario 3. There are a few metroidvania elements left, where you have to return to previously played levels once you have keys that can unlock old doors and more movement items, but these elements are limited. Some Kickstarter backers criticized the game for not being a metroidvania anymore. Personally, this change didn't bother me. I liked the world structure and discovery flow of the game.
The secret discovery isn't difficult at all. I found all secrets and got all achievements on my own without that much secret hunting effort, but I can see why a minority of reviewers might dislike that.

If you like these types of games, get it at $3-$8. I got it in a Humble Bundle. I played on Normal Difficulty, died less than 10 times (keep in mind that I'm pretty decent at video games), took me 7.5h to complete.

Great game with some small flaws, in my opinion. The corruption levels, which dont allow you to progress and do any other levels until it is won is okay at first, but happened too many times, especially when it was a long level i did not want to play again, since i 100% that level. Speaking of, some levels take a couple minutes, and then others take 15-20 mins. I thought there were several levels that were too long and were a slog to get through. The bosses, all of them, were quite challenging and especially for the last boss. i got everything i could in the game and it took me 6 hours, but i can see this easily taking 10-15 hours on a harder difficulty. Pixel animation and story characters were all done very well. I reccomend this game. 8/10

This game gives me the same kind of excited vibe I had as a kid playing on the SNES and getting "somewhere" with my games. Progression is good fun, music is really bloody good, graphically it's pretty gorgeous, and the controls feel smooth, I don't have the fastest reflexes in the world so this isn't as punishing or as precise as certain other platform games, but I'm having an absolute ball playing it! The moves are glorious and I feel things unlock at a pace that isn't overwhelming or too much to take in. The character designs are quite lovely, I am very fond of the bearded gnome-y dwarf-y things. They're cute! I absolutely recommend this game for a modern sense of nostalgia.

Another action platformer in metroidvania style that tries to beat the classics. Gameplay is ok nothing out of ordinary - you can collect different weapons for various occasions and upgrades for your character. Lots of exploration where you uncover new parts of the map. Some light story will engage you in this adventure. When you're stuck try another unexplored area with new abilities and such. Visuals are nice and colorful. Music and sounds somewhat decent. Simple game mechanic attack and dodge plus some skills. Controls are good, nothing to complain either. Overall decent game, but it's just another one in this genre and if you played plenty of them it will not surprise you much.

So there's nice pixel art here. It all looks nice and all. Good music. And the sound design seems to sound like it came from Sega, from back in the 1990's.

I suppose in a classic and primitive sense, this is a MetroidVania... Like how the NES Castlevanias were super linear. But this game changes it up with some classic and super linear NES Super Mario style gameplay... Mixed is even a Mario 3 level select option.

Shortly after the tutorial (which wasn't fun), you quickly sees what the main emphasis of this game is. PUZZLES.

And none of this sounds like a game I would want to play... It's a game that seems geared for 8 year old children...

Te lo puedes pasar en un fin de semana, creo que principalmente diseñado para niños debido a que no es demasiado difícil. Y es casi lo mejor que tengo que decir del juego.

Gráficamente seré raro pero no me acaba de convencer, el combate es repetitivo hasta decir basta, el plataformeo un poco meh, los enemigos clónicos incluso en 6 horitas de gameplay... Consiste en avanzar, matar a los mismos enemigos, recoger decenas de miles de rombos rojos que te mejoran ligeramente al personaje, y cargar una barra para que cuando haya un boss, casi cualquier boss, matarlo rápidamente dándole a la A muy rápido. Hay una chica contra la que peleas 3 veces y se que tiene un arco por la primera interacción, porque la he stunlockeado, como puedes hacer con la mayoría de enemigos.

La historia tampoco es mejor, usa las clásicas palabras de "Calamidad", "El mal", "Debes salvarnos a todos", etc. Casi parece improvisada sobre la marcha según tenían más o menos presupuesto. ¿Y por qué motivo lo apruebo? Yo que se, está entretenido, como comer palomitas sin sal. No van a ganar una estrella michelín ni siendo el único participante, pero daño tampoco hace.

[i] Review after 100% completion on Hard. It is a long-read with some minor spoilers. TL;DR – the game is decent, although has numerous rough edges. [/i]

I have discovered this game by accident, searching for some action-adventures or platformers. The 84% positive score and the compelling screenshots nudged me into buying it, despite the game having just above 300 reviews. Hey, at the end of the day, if the game is truly good, but isn’t known to wider audience, I more often than not consider such game to be a hidden gem.
Was [b] Flynn: Son of Crimson [/b] a hidden gem? Let’s find out!

First and foremost the game has a very lovely and detailed art-style: every locations has several visual layers to it, the enemies, NPCs and objects are animated masterfully and the colour palette overall suits the game tone.

The music is fine. Nothing too Impressive, but not awful by any means. It’s just somewhat generic but serves the need nonetheless. Given that this is an indie game, there are no voiceovers. Most of the time I played while listening to some Youtube content creators.
Now, let’s talk about the gameplay itself.

The start of our journey is pretty archetypical – a young orphan boy from a small village sets on a quest to cure his doggo, and to save the world as a bonus.

The world of Rosantica is separated into locations, to which you earn access by beating the previous locations. The locations themselves are divided into several levels (usually 5-6 levels per locations. No, levels do not equal screens). Each level leads to another one, until you beat the whole location. The levels feature some light platforming elements as well as different types of enemies.
The whole experience is quite linear, although some levels in certain locations may have an additional exit via locked door. In those cases you need to acquire the unique key, by completing a certain side-quest (which is always a part of the main one) or by defeating a boss.

The biomes’ uniqueness as well as the enemies’ variety are quite decent: you’ve got classical forests, snow mountains, deserts as well as a couple of other more unique landscapes. The enemies differ by models as well as by some smart and tasteful reskins that add some extra combat flavor.
Sure, not all enemies are equally well designed or particularly fun to fight against, but overall they do provide the necessary challenge and complement their respective biomes and the game as a whole.

The game features 3 distinct weapons with their own fighting styles, strengths and weaknesses. Some enemies require you to use certain weapon to defeat them or to strip away their protection. Purchasing and unlocking different combos may further improve every fighting style. You gain the local currency by defeating enemies, breaking red crystals scattered around the levels and by completing arena challenges.
Combos or special attacks consume some amount of your “combo meter”, which you accumulate by hitting enemies.

There are also 3 types of elemental spells: lightning, ice and fire. There is also a unique Crimson spell that you get in the beginning, which is basically a fireball without an “oomph”. Each biome has some unique interactions usually with one specific magic type: melting the ice cubes, freezing the water or electrocuting electric enemies to “discharge” them and such.

In general, I enjoyed the game, especially the visuals, the combat mechanics and the boss battles. [spoiler] The fight with the final boss, featuring all of the previously defeated bosses as temporary helpers was unique and very refreshing. I can’t recall another game ever doing this.

The Easter-egg location with the wall full of names of developers on it was also a nice and cool thing. [/spoiler]

And here I would like to list some of my perplexities about the cohesiveness of the game and the synergy of its elements, that often left me puzzled.

You have souls-like mechanic of losing your currency on death, although here you permanently lose a fixed 5% of your total currency amount, unlike in Dark Souls, where you lose 100%, but have and ability to pick all of the souls back. And even though this might appear a miniscule amount, given how often you would die on Hard it will soon become very tiresome.

The game also explores metroidvania-lite genre, but ultimately fails due to lack of unlocking abilities, that allow you to enter locations hidden behind some obstacle.
The platforming is fine, it’s not bad by any means but it’s also consistently below platforming in dedicated games.

The combat is where the game shines, due to the good amount of animations and special strikes. However, while playing on Hard I couldn’t but notice that the enemies take a bit too much time to kill, even when I was utilizing all of my appropriate arsenal, and even when Flynn’s health, damage and powers were decently upgraded. The game isn’t really built for Hard, especially it is shown in the 2nd phase of the last boss, who had like 50% more health than he should have gotten.

The health and health restoration deserve their separate section. On Hard every enemy strike deals 2 HP. At the beginning of the game, you have a total of 3 HP. And you don’t get the ability to heal until a couple of locations further. When you finally do get that ability, it is initially limited to 3 uses, when it is fully charged. Each use restores 2 HP and there are no ability to increase the amount of HP restored. And every time you press a button to restore HP, Flynn stops for a about 1,5 seconds to do so.
In order to refill your “estus flasks” you need to break special green crystals, which contain some of that rejuvenating energy. These crystals are also scattered around levels like the red ones.

And now one of the biggest inconveniences/poorly designed game decisions in the game – you start every location with exactly one “estus flask”. They do not refill automatically once you have beaten all the levels in a certain location. However, if you choose to enter one of the challenge arenas, which you discover along the way, you will get an instant refill of all available “flasks”. Another example of a gameplay crutch and lack of planning or testing.

Moreover, if you let’s say start a location with all of your “flasks” ready, but Flynn happen to lose all of his HP in one of the levels, you will automatically restart the said level with full health but only 1 “flask”.

I would like to emphasize a little more the shaky attempt into metroidvania-lite genre. Some exits or areas of certain locations are inaccessible to the player. Do you need to discover some additional magic spell? Or will you get another weapon, that will help you with that?
No and no – you will acquire a special ability while completing some level in a certain location, when the game is like 80% completed, and it’s tied to access to the final boss biome.

Speaking about gimmicks – your magical doggo, Dex. She was marketed through the screenshots as an integral part of the gameplay, which you can ride into the battle and fight enemies. In reality, she is weakened according to the plot narrative for the first like 50% of the game, and for the rest 50% she is a pure gimmick that you can only summon in special altars, which are located in designated levels of a handful few locations.

The other gimmick that also bamboozled me into thinking this is an additional game mechanic is the magic leaf that was given to Flynn by some random NPC in some desert level. The magic leaf granted Flynn an ability to glide over the air.
The gliding level was ok, but what surprised and disappointed me, was the fact, that this same random NPC appears right at the end of that same level to take back the magic leaf. What? Why?

Given all aforementioned, it is a bitter 7,75/10, which could have been more.

Flynn: Son of Crimson é uma mistura inusitada — e promissora — de plataforma com elementos de metroidvania, combate tático e progressão de habilidades.

A ideia é excelente e claramente feita com muito carinho. Visualmente é bonito, com uma direção de arte encantadora e trilha sonora competente. Mas, infelizmente, Flynn tropeça um pouco nas próprias ambições.

A jogabilidade de plataforma é sólida: comandos precisos, boas variações de armas, evolução de habilidades e mudanças no gameplay ao longo da jornada. A tentativa de incorporar elementos de metroidvania também é louvável, com backtracking e upgrades que desbloqueiam novas áreas. No entanto, isso gera um problema claro: fases longas demais.

Durante a campanha, encontrei fases que duravam de 9 a 10 minutos — trechos que facilmente poderiam ter sido divididos em duas ou três fases. Isso, aliado ao fato de que cada bioma tem apenas uma música tema, transforma o que seria uma trilha boa em algo repetitivo e, com o tempo, cansativo.

O combate é tático e interessante, com três armas principais (espada, machado e luvas), além de habilidades como corrida invulnerável, recuperação de energia com cristais e uma árvore de progressão bem estruturada. É legal perceber como cada arma se adapta melhor a diferentes inimigos ou situações: espada como meio-termo, machado com alto dano e golpes lentos, e as luvas com ataques rápidos e a habilidade de parar no ar.

Os inimigos, embora não muito variados, são bem projetados e forçam o jogador a pensar em como enfrentá-los — especialmente com os poderes elementais (fogo, gelo, elétrico e "crimson"). No entanto, os upgrades de dano acabam desequilibrando o combate, tornando quase obrigatório o uso das luvas pela velocidade, dano e capacidade de atordoamento.

E quase me esqueci, mas o jogo tem uma história legal, com direito a começo, meio e fim, personagens legais, toda uma breve motivação pras coisas acontecerem. Existe um imenso capricho por parte do estúdio em não colocar nada acontecendo sem motivo.

No fim das contas, Flynn é um bom jogo, quase ótimo. A paixão da equipe de desenvolvimento transparece no capricho visual e sonoro, mas o excesso de repetição, tanto de estrutura quanto de trilha, acaba tornando a experiência mais cansativa do que deveria ser. Terminei o jogo, mas sinceramente não sinto vontade de recomeçar ou buscar o 100%.

O jogo tem pixel arte linda, e uma gameplay e trilha bem gostosa, o jogo é bem curtinho porém nunca te deixa entediado, cada level ele te apresenta ideias novas que costumam ser bem divertidas.

O único defeito que esse jogo tem na minha opnião é ele ser curto demais, ele tem várias ideias interessantes como o lobo, [spoiler] paraglinder, voar com o lobin [/spoiler] e etc. Porém a maioria das ideias que o jogo tem são apenas usadas em um ou dois leveis o que deixa você com aquele gostinho de quero mais.

Je vais essayer de lister les [b]points forts et faibles[/b] du jeu, selon moi, pour ceux qui seraient intéressé d'y jouer et qui cherche un retour.

[h2]Point positifs :[/h2]

[*]Plateforming très simple, qui n'invente rien mais fonctionne pas trop mal. C'est un bon jeu pour s'approprier le fonctionnement des jeux de plateforme en 2D.

[*]Style graphique très beau : c'est vraiment le point fort du jeu selon moi, c'est qu'il est très très beau. Les décors sont détaillés suffisamment pour qu'on se surprenne à s'arrêter quelques instants et regarder autour de soit.

[*]Game design : c'est une recette vu souvent mais ça fonctionne. On accumule une ressource pour acheter des améliorations de son personnage et des attaques/combos qui sont faciles à réaliser et surtout font vraiment pencher les combats en votre faveur. On acquiert des nouvelles armes et mécaniques au fil de la progression, et les ennemis suivent relativement bien la montée en puissance donc on a quand même du challenge. SPOILER [spoiler]Petit clin d’œil très apprécié d'une certaine arme, à un hérisson rouge d'une saga d'un hérisson bleu ou au diable de tasmanie de Taz-Mania pour les français)[/spoiler]

[*]La musique est vraiment sympa, elle accompagne bien l'aventure et la session de jeu, bien qu'elle soit assez peu immersive par rapport à l'environnement. On est plus dans l'accompagnement d'un récit d'aventure épique que vraiment des ambiances calquée sur l'environnement; c'est un choix qui fonctionne malgré tout, le trailer donne un réel avant goût de la playlist pour le coup.

[*]Les succès : ça semble anecdotique, mais honnêtement devoir relancer x fois un jeu pour avoir tous les succès, c'est exaspérant je trouve. Là une run/une save suffit pour tout avoir et ils ne sont pas masqués. Très belle philosophie que personnellement j'apprécie.

[*]Level design des niveaux : alors autant je trouve que les premiers 70% du jeu sont plutôt bien réalisés. Y'a des environnements et idées originales (eau, vent, verticalité, absence de lumière et autres) autant je trouve que les derniers 30% ont vraiment été bâclés et sont peu réfléchis (dernière zone du jeu). On tombe dans l'augmentation simple de la difficulté par le fait de pousser le joueur à éviter de tomber très souvent dans le vide alors qu'il y avait beaucoup mieux à faire et surtout alors que juste avant on nous propose des labyrinthes ou du level design qui au moins est original ! SPOILER Par ailleurs, on nous tease (introduit et montre, et permet d'utiliser) une mécanique de déplacement à un moment qui est très très cool pour nous la retirer littéralement 60 secondes plus tard et on s'en sert plus jamais. Pourquoi ? Quel intérêt d'avoir mis de la réflexion et du temps de design puis d'intégration dans une mécanique pour la donner 1% du jeu au joueur ??

[*]Les niveaux avec l'affliction : j'ai beaucoup de mal à comprendre ce que ça apporte à part allonger le temps de jeu très honnêtement. Les ennemis sont plus coriaces; ok pourquoi pas, l'ambiance est tristoune, d'accord; y'a un intérêt scénaristique; et encore c'est pas comme si on collectait vraiment une pièce du puzzle à chaque fois et qu'on comprenait le plot qu'à la fin, mais globalement on peut juste passer les niveaux sans combattre et sans réel difficulté. J'ai peut être juste pas compris l’intérêt Game & Level design de ces niveaux. Dommage

[*]Les pouvoirs associés aux projectiles; qu'on récupère au fil de la progression : l'utilisation est vraiment timide et c'est très dommage parce que c'est pour moi une des mines d'or de ce jeu sur lequel il fallait capitaliser en level design. On combine jamais les pouvoirs entre eux pour des challenges de plateforming alors qu'un succès nous demande de le faire en combat, là ou c'est pas du tout utile ? Pourquoi pas en faire des challenges de level design ?? Vraiment très dommage.

[*]Les boss (design et level design) : il y a des bonnes idées de pattern de boss; des inspirations évidentes à d'autres jeux et univers (on reconnaîtra le sniper de Trigun, pour ceux qui auront la référence) mais encore une fois c'est très timide. Et les deux dernières arènes (boss de fin et avant boss de fin) sont juste abominables et bâclées. La seule difficulté de ces combats c'est le level design. Je ne peux pas trop entrer dans le détail sans spoil les combats, donc je dirais que honnêtement je suis passé d'un "j'ai hâte de voir la suite" à un "vivement que ça se termine" parce que mon pire ennemi c'était le level design.

Pour environ 10h de jeu, peut être un peu cher dans le climat actuel de l'industrie du JV, mais bonne expérience tout de même, agréable à jouer par petites sessions ou à one shot (comme c'était mon cas, fini en deux sessions). Je recommande !

Açıkçası oyunun hikayesi zerre ilgimi çekmedi, diyalogları spam atarak geçtim. Bölümler güzeldi fakat checkpoint sistemi rezaletti öldüğünüzde veya düştüğünüzde taaa en baştan başlatıyor. Neyse ki oyun kolaydı.

Arada rastgele çıkan event tarzı şeyler var ama bir süreden sonra çok sıkıcı hale geliyor. Hatta oyun belli bir noktadan sonra "hadi la bitsin artık" dedirtiyor.

İlk boss olarak bossun kızıyla savaşıyoruz, fakat hiçbir özelliğimiz olmadan tabii ki yeniliyoruz. Crimson denen büyülü bir şey bize güç veriyor ve onu adil bir şekilde yeniyoruz. Sonra biraz ilerleyip ikinci karşılaşmaya geliyoruz, bize bir özellik alıp gelmemizi söylüyor. Özelliği alıp savaşa başlıyoruz ve bu kısım tamamen dengesiz çünkü özelliği kullanınca hasar yemiyoruz ve bossu rahatça sersemletiyoruz. Yani boss hiçbir şey yapamıyor. Diğer bosslarda böyle bir sıkıntı yokken bunda olması kötü olmuş. Yapmasalar en eğlenceli bosslardan biri olabilirdi.

Son boss ise aşırı kolaydı, tek denemede geçtim. Ama ondan önceki hayalet bossu çok sinir bozucuydu, 5’ten fazla denedim çünkü hep uçuyor, vurulmuyor ve sürekli ölüyordum.

Silahlar eğlenceli, mekanikleri güzel. Ne zaman alınır derseniz? İndirimde 2-3 dolara düşerse belki. Ama onun yerine Hollow Knight alabilirsiniz, çok daha iyi ve pişman olmazsın.

If you think the large wolf companion on the cover is going to play a large part in the game at all, I'm sorry to disappoint you but no. They are pretty non existent and its extremely disappointing. The whole time I was playing I kept asking 'When will I get to team up with my giant wolf?.' You can only summon them in specific spots and its not till late in game.

This game has a lot of potential, but the story is severely lacking. I have so many questions and it will never get answered because they don't continue the story after the final fight. It's very lackluster and it could have done way better.

Played the game on normal all the way through. It was rather hard. The further you go in the game the less healing crystals you can find and you'll die rather often. The boss fights are all specific fighting moves that play on repeat and make the fights dawn out and boring. The final boss fight? Horrendous. You can only attack during specific moments and if you try to do anymore you'll get damaged and punished quickly for it. It carries the fight out for so long that even my stream chat was bored out of their minds watching it over and over.

Went into the game feeling excited and optimistic, but ended up really disappointed. Felt like they should have spent longer on the game to make it what it could have been instead of having just released it the way it is.

Pawsitives: The art style is nice. There are some fun little characters you meet.

[i]- "Caberia perfeitamente em seu SNES/Mega Drive";
- Direção de Arte competente;
- Tudo certo com a trilha sonora, mas nada memorável;
- História genérica porém aquém do que poderia entregar;
- Combate simples e efetivo, mas subutilizado;
- Jogo curto para aquela diversão leve;
- Ficou faltando dificuldade;
- Não possui legendas em PT-BR[/i]

Apesar de termos talvez há algum tempo certa saturação com o escopo de jogos de plataforma desenvolvidos por estúdios indie (ao qual sou entusiasta), [b]Flynn: Son of Crimson[/b] indiscutivelmente cativa desde o trailer do [i]Kickstarter[/i] com sua abordagem focando no combate, belos visuais em pixel e trilha com um [i]mood[/i] grudento de aventura. Não havia a menor chance deste jogo passar fora do meu radar.

Finalizada a jogatina, o gosto é agridoce: um jogo divertido, agradável e competente no que se propõe a fazer, porém com a sensação de um imenso potencial desperdiçado. Tentarei refletir abaixo.

[h2]Se Fosse um Cartucho, Eu Alugaria[/h2]

Para os mais novos pode parecer loucura, mas houve uma época onde pessoas se deslocavam a um local físico alugar jogos por determinado período a um preço muito acessível. Para milhares de pessoas, as locadoras foram a porta de inúmeras aventuras - onde nem sempre sabíamos o que encontrar: ora pérolas, ora decepções. [i]Flynn[/i] seria uma grata surpresa na prateleira, adaptando-se perfeitamente a este cenário: em ritmo cadenciado levei 14h contabilizadas de sessão para aproveitar tudo o que este título poderia oferecer. Tempo ideal para alugar na sexta-feira e devolver no domingo.

Apesar de haver elementos [i]Metroidvania[/i], temos aqui um tradicional jogo de ação em plataforma 2D munido duma [i]Pixel Art[/i] que nos remete aos melhores momentos da glória em 16bits. Você terá seções de plataforma (sem tanta necessidade de precisão), cristais para recolher e preencher sua árvore de habilidades, um Mapa Mundi para avançar por estágios (tal qual em [b][i]Super Mario World[/i][/b]) diversos, distintos e até certo ponto criativos; um pequeno aceno à exploração (na única [i]Fetch Quest[/i] do título), magias elementais para aprender, [i]puzzles[/i] para resolver (algumas com tais magias) e batalhas contra [i]bosses[/i] a enfrentar. Pelo [i]FAQ[/i] do estúdio [i]Thunderhorse[/i] entendi que a direção natural do jogo sofreu alterações de escopo, simplificando o projeto. O resultado de qualquer forma ficou ótimo, mesmo sem arriscar na introdução de novos conceitos para empurrar o gênero para frente. Simplesmente um belo cartucho para aproveitar no final de semana.

[h2]O Chamado para uma [strike]Épica[/strike] Aventura[/h2]

"Flynn, uma grande ameaça se aproxima ... Por favor Flynn, Rosantia precisa de você ... Acorde."

Com este gancho o jogo te promete rumar para uma épica jornada do herói. Rapidamente [i]Flynn[/i], a persona silenciosa, empunha sua espada na companhia da canina [i]DEX[/i] e a ação se desenrola de maneira satisfatória. A progressão na jogatina é na medida certa e você sempre encontra novidades. Porém ... onde está o grande arco narrativo ? O mote inicial não paga a promessa e você joga aguardando uma evolução que te surpreenda, mas que nunca chega de fato.

O que fica perceptível (e por isso minha sensação agridoce) aqui é que claramente havia uma [i]Lore[/i] a ser explorada, de mistérios e histórias ricas sobre contextos passados de [b]Rosantia[/b] e da relação entre mundos. A exploração se torna linear mesmo contendo estágios de múltiplos caminhos (que são declarados [i]in game[/i], tirando todo o fator surpresa inclusive no [i]backtracking[/i]). A dimensão alternativa da história é minimizada a eventos pontuais que avançam a narrativa sem alterações drásticas. No final você não se importa muito com personagens, motivações ou um antagonista que não nos passa sensação de urgência ou temor. Há claros sinais de que o jogo planejava ser mais ambicioso: um mundo interconectado para explorarmos com maiores possibilidades. O [i]Level Design[/i] dos estágios não é composto de áreas abertas como em [b]Alex Kidd[/b] ou do já citado título do encanador bigodudo, mas em seções que mais se assemelham a [b]Super Metroid[/b]. Pode ser que estes tenham sido sacrifícios necessários para que o jogo visse a luz do dia. Neste contexto, fico feliz por isso - pois apesar dos pesares a aventura é gratificante.

[h2]A Fúria de Flynn vs Slime Feliz[/h2]

Nesta jornada eu aconselho você a iniciar o jogo no [i]Hard[/i] desde o início. O jogo é fácil. Muito fácil. Tão fácil que o Difícil parece Normal. Apesar de haver uma boa gama de combos a serem aprendidos e das armas que progridem a história (todas contendo animações maravilhosas das [i]sprites[/i] de [i]Flynn[/i]), você não precisa de muito para evitar e atacar os monstros no momento certo (seguindo orientações visuais dos inimigos, além do padrão de suas animações para ter o [i]timming[/i] perfeito). Para os mais complicados, o uso do ataque especial resolverá muitas situações que poderiam ser mais interessantes. Você encontrará as melhores e mais desafiadoras batalhas do jogo nos "desafios" e confrontos contra [i]bosses[/i]. Os controles são responsivos e o [i]feedback[/i] dos combos é a melhor coisa do jogo (além do vislumbre visual), mas você esperaria um desafio proporcional à curva de evolução do protagonista. Além da facilidade nas batalhas há momentos onde você precisa da companhia de [i]DEX[/i] para avançar, mas não há qualquer estratégia necessária: pois existem pontos de invocação da canina exatamente no início de cada seção onde não há como avançar sem ela - praticamente delegando a esta personagem a nulidade. O jogo tenta ser acessível mas exagera em não te punir. Você acumulará generosa quantidade de cura e o "[i]Game Over[/i]" basicamente te infringirá em 5% de seus cristais acumulados - que você recuperará praticamente no mesmo local onde morreu, vista a abundância de cristais para [i]farmar[/i].

[h2]Resumindo:[/h2]

Apesar de minhas reflexões o jogo possui seus méritos e consegue entregar um produto sólido e bastante divertido ! Se você procura um jogo curto e visualmente encantador, [b]Flynn[/b] pode ser uma ótima pedida para um fim de semana descompromissado.

[i]PS.: Infelizmente o promissor estúdio Thunderhorse não resistiu e foi fechado no final de 2024. É muito triste ver um grupo talentoso e apaixonado precisar tomar decisões como essa. Nos deixaram um jogo encantador. Que eles encontrem novos caminhos e que logo nos entreguem outros títulos com a mesma paixão que Flynn demonstrou.[/i]
