My 4 year old daughter loves this game.
My life has been changed. Have you ever read a book? Because I haven't until Fatty Bear, may I call you Sir Bear, changed my life. I have since moved on to more primitive literature like Shakespeare and The Bible, both of which I believe drew inspiration for Sir Bear and his perils. I really enjoyed the part where Fatty Bear tackled with his inner demons to overcome his dark thoughts, and expressed these thoughts in the form of a cake. Thank you fatty bear, you shall be written into my eulogy as a great influence
my childhood is now completed
I never grew up with this one, so I don't have any sugar coating nostalgia bias to give it. I think it is a bit clunky and slow but overall it still has that Humongous Entertainment charm to it, not a bad game by any stretch of the word. For other HE fans, I think they at least have to try it
this game brought meaning back to my miserable life
Fatty Bear’s Birthday Surprise, developed and published by Humongous Entertainment and re-released by Nightdive Studios, is one of those early point-and-click adventure titles that perfectly captures the charm and innocence of 1990s children’s computer games. It was originally released in 1993 as part of Humongous Entertainment’s “Junior Adventure” line, using the same SCUMM engine technology that powered many of LucasArts’ classic adventures. What makes Fatty Bear’s Birthday Surprise memorable is its gentle sense of discovery and its whimsical approach to storytelling. The game follows Fatty Bear, a stuffed toy who springs to life one night to prepare a surprise birthday party for his owner, Kayla. Along with the help of Matilda Rabbit and Gretchen the Doll, Fatty Bear must bake a cake, decorate the house, and keep mischievous obstacles—like a puppy running loose—under control before morning. The setup is simple, yet it captures the imaginative wonder of a child’s world where toys come alive when no one is watching.
At its core, the game functions as a light, exploratory adventure designed to encourage curiosity rather than challenge. Players guide Fatty Bear through Kayla’s house using an intuitive point-and-click interface, collecting items, combining them to solve small puzzles, and uncovering countless interactive details hidden in each room. The gameplay is purposefully slow-paced and forgiving, allowing children to experiment freely without fear of failure. There are no time limits, health bars, or game-over screens—just a cozy environment where the joy comes from discovery. The game rewards curiosity with hundreds of “clickable” animations: furniture springs to life, kitchen utensils dance, and strange, playful noises burst from everyday objects. This abundance of interactive detail was one of Humongous Entertainment’s defining trademarks, turning every scene into a tiny playground of visual humor. Even simple actions like opening cupboards or playing the piano feel magical because everything in the house seems to respond in its own charming way.
The puzzles themselves are designed to be approachable but still satisfying. Players must gather ingredients to bake a cake, find decorations for the party, and recover lost items such as missing letters from a birthday sign that a curious puppy has scattered around the house. These objectives are straightforward enough for young players to follow, but they introduce fundamental adventure game logic—fetch quests, object combinations, and environmental clues—without overwhelming them. Some tasks change slightly from one playthrough to another, such as item locations, which gives the game a small degree of replay value. The pacing is gentle and unhurried, which was typical of early Humongous titles but remains one of their most enduring qualities. Fatty Bear’s Birthday Surprise never rushes the player; instead, it invites them to enjoy the process of helping others and seeing the results of their efforts unfold naturally.
Visually, the game’s art direction captures the warmth and innocence of its setting. The environments are rendered in bright, hand-drawn colors, filled with the comforting clutter of a lived-in home. Despite being confined to a single house, each room feels distinct, from the kitchen’s glowing oven to Kayla’s cozy bedroom filled with toys. What gives the game its distinctive atmosphere, however, is the nighttime backdrop. The entire adventure takes place under the soft glow of moonlight, giving everything a slightly dreamlike tone. This setting, combined with the toy characters’ lively animation, creates a whimsical but subtly uncanny effect—as though the player has stepped into a child’s dream where everyday objects awaken with secret personalities. The soundtrack and voice acting reinforce this tone with gentle music and expressive, enthusiastic performances. The MIDI-based score may sound simple by modern standards, but it carries a nostalgic charm that suits the game’s tone perfectly.
Because Fatty Bear’s Birthday Surprise was one of Humongous Entertainment’s earliest titles, it also stands as a fascinating precursor to the studio’s later, more famous series like Putt-Putt, Freddi Fish, and Pajama Sam. In many ways, it feels like a prototype of the formula they would refine over the next decade: a kind-hearted protagonist, a world full of interactive objects, and puzzles designed to teach basic logic through play. What sets Fatty Bear apart, however, is its tone. While later Humongous games are brighter and more overtly cheerful, Fatty Bear’s story unfolds in the quiet hours of the night, giving it a slightly more subdued and mysterious atmosphere. It’s not dark or frightening, but there’s an underlying sense of calm anticipation that makes it feel unique among its peers. This moodiness, combined with the cozy domestic setting, gives the game a nostalgic, almost timeless quality that appeals to players revisiting it decades later.
The re-release by Nightdive Studios ensures that modern audiences can experience the game on contemporary hardware without losing its original charm. The Steam version preserves the full voice acting, visuals, and interactivity of the original, while offering smoother compatibility through ScummVM support. Despite its age, the game remains surprisingly functional and easy to navigate, with clear visual cues and responsive controls. Reviews from modern players on Steam have been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting both nostalgia and appreciation for its simplicity. Many adults who played Fatty Bear as children now revisit it with their own kids, finding that its core appeal—the joy of exploration, the kindness of its characters, and the sense of accomplishment from completing small tasks—remains intact even in an era of complex games.
As a whole, Fatty Bear’s Birthday Surprise is a snapshot of an era when educational and family-friendly games balanced creativity with warmth. It’s not long or difficult, and it doesn’t aim to be more than what it is: a gentle adventure about preparing a surprise for someone you love. Yet that simplicity is exactly what makes it special. It’s a story about care, friendship, and quiet determination, told through the lens of a teddy bear who just wants to make someone happy. Its charm lies not in challenge but in atmosphere, the way it transforms a normal household into a world of imagination. For those who grew up with Humongous Entertainment’s library, it remains a nostalgic treasure; for newcomers, it’s a charming piece of gaming history that still radiates the same cozy magic it did over three decades ago.
Rating: 8/10
While not Humongous Entertainment's first foray into the world of kid-friendly point and clicks (that honor instead goes to our favorite car Putt-Putt), 'Fatty Bear' is a unique entry in their library even if largely due to it being a one-off franchise outside of the title character's appearances in a few arcade/party game spin-offs. Perhaps indicative of this scenario, some have criticized it for being a lot more simplistic in design than subsequent HE games, and to be fair, it admittedly is in some ways. It doesn't have as much of a replay factor as other HE games, with a straight-forward objective and only about one or two major instances of HE's trademark alternate pathway style of gameplay where some items are ultimately found in different locations in subsequent playthroughs.
Still, for what its worth, there's something infectiously soothing about this game. It doesn't go to some of the entertainingly wacky lengths that other HE games have gone since then but it's still a charming little entry in the HE library with its relaxing night-time aesthetic and charming pixel art animations back before the studio fully transitioned into hand-drawn animation. Thus, as short as it may be, it's still worth checking out for those who either, like me, grew up with the HE library or those eager to experience the history of an indisputable childhood staple of the world of PC gaming up there with the likes of JumpStart and Reader Rabbit.
A really retro oldscool game from 1993. The old music tunes and Point-to-Click way of gaming before. So nostalgic <3
i just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ came all over fatty bear
This Game is goated ♥♥♥♥ THE HATERS!!! FATTY4LIFE
So glad to have found this on steam. Played this when I was a kid and I loved it! Didn't take me long to finish it but it was definitely worth it!
It brought back many childhood memories, and it's also very useful for those who are learning English. A short but cute story, I recommend.
It wasn't too hard, it took me about 15 hours for both my runs. The secret ending was pretty insane but I won't get into any spoilers. I def recommend, you did it again Scott!

This is the second stop on my Nostalgia Tour...
This is the only proper Fatty Bear game in the Humongous Entertainment catalog, and I ended up missing it in my youth. Still, there was a nostalgia trip since it shares a lot of the same sounds and features that you can find in a number of their other titles. This game I'm sure would still be a big hit with kids to this day, and it is something that adults can still enjoy. It's got its own charm and silliness along with a few mini-games. There's even a functional piano. It is actually genuinely a cool little feature since you can essentially write some music with it, which is something really great to introduce to the target audience of this game. It's very creative and fun.
As much as this is a good little game, I can see why Fatty Bear didn't take off as much as the other mascots. Fatty Bear is a perfectly fine protagonist, but he's just not as iconic as the others. Still, I remember many easter eggs of him throughout the rest of H.E.'s games and now look forward to seeing how many I can spot on this return journey. Speaking of easter eggs, there is actually actually one in this game that directly teases the next main game, which Fatty Bear comments. That's neat!
...but also, his comments did make some interesting implications. Also, what is going on in this game, really? Ok, these are spoilers now, but...do the family know that Fatty Bear and company come to life at night? If not, how do they think all of these things are put together by the next morning? The dad didn't set up all of that stuff. How did he think it got there? Also, did he really put a dog in a wrapped box and just leave it in the kitchen? That doesn't seem right...Also, is that supposed to be the old school, original Pep? Is that why Fatty Bear says he's friends with Putt-Putt? Also, why is he named "Fatty Bear" anyways?...You know, these and other sorts of questions coupled with everything happening at night when everyone is asleep does leave a little bit of a curious, weird energy about the game. It's very quirky, and I found it all kind of funny probably not in the intended ways.
Ok, final thoughts...I think you should definitely buy the Humongous Entertainment Complete Pack, which this game is included in. I don't know that I would go out of my way to buy this game on its own, which is probably part of the reason I never had it as a kid. Still, it is a worthwhile little adventure that gave me a few laughs even if some of it was just at the absurdity of it all.
So, yes, I recommend picking this in the Humongous Entertainment Complete Pack and ideally on sale.
i dont like that they have you give the puppy a bath
All worth it for the line "I'll put the cake in the oven for you, fatty"
Fatty bear also helped out at Diddys party i heard. Good Guy.
This is a weird one.
Putt-Putt is a car in a world of cars. Freddi Fish is a talking fish beneath the sea, in a world also inhabited by Humans. However, Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise contains children's toys coming to life, in what can only be described as an ordinary, modern setting. It directly shows Humans, which is unusual for Humongous games.
This is a surprisingly rude game too, compared to the then contemporary Putt-Putt games 'Putt-Putt Joins the Parade' and 'Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon'. I mean this in terms of the puzzles. For instance, to get to the basement you have to interact not once but twice with a chute in the bathroom. There are letters you need to collect, but they can be scattered in some pretty ridiculous spots, AND they can be located in places you've already looked, which I think is probably a no-no, since it makes it more confusing, especially considering the logic of their placement is just non-existent (they can be found inside a fish tank, or inside the fridge for example.)
The piano minigame stands out as a kind of surprisingly advanced thing, it's sort of like a very primitive Mario Paint where you can basically compose music for the game to play back to you. I think it would have been nice too if you could also maybe even learn to play piano, by it showing you what the notes for the keys are and such, but that might have been too much. It's cute enough that you can make the game play various little tunes and compose your own for it to play for you - though I pity any adult forced to endure some of the awful sounds this game can make, since you can set the piano to playback in a variety of very annoying sounds including a 'hammer drop' sound effect.
Also, Putt-Putt's dog Pep is inexplicably in this game? I mean, this dog also has a big spot on his back, so maybe that's meant to be the decisive difference between them, but I think if you're a child or just anyone sensible, you'll look at both of these pixelated brown dogs and say, hey, that's the same one. Maybe they had trouble coming up with a different design that looked friendly and cute, and just decided to reuse this one.
There's WAY more objectives than in any of the other games that I've played, but most of the things you need to look for in this game, you just find in the kitchen, you just open the cupboards and the fridge and you click on things. The location of the sugar seems like the one concession to making this a normal 90s point and click adventure game, because it's in a weird place unlike everything else which is kind of just right there where you need it. There's the letters too, in the sense that they really have no reason to be found where you find them.
I think this game is surprisingly ugly too? Both of the first Putt-Putt games look much nicer than this one. I think it might be because of the weird decor of the house, and the lack of variety there is sort of disappointing, and unpleasant.
This is not a terrible game, but it's on the lower end of things, so maybe go check out some of the Putt-Putt games or the Freddi Fish games instead. I still would recommend it, but only barely.
dat ik een feest op moet bouwen
Although I think it is way too overpriced, it is still a charming little kids game.
What a surprise!
The title does not have support for modern PCs and defaults to a stretched resolution which is jarring to play, even for a younger audience. Switching to windowed mode makes the graphics sharper but the game screen is so tiny and hurts your eyes. This is better off ported onto a mobile device to better reach their intended audiences.
10/10
- very good pacing
- cool minigames
- good dialog
- funny animation click events
overall great experience would recommend
Playing this 31-year-old kids' game, I am reminded that, not only does the soundtrack bang, but also, I now believe that Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise is behind a nightmare I had when I was 4 or 5 years old, which I still remember because it scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. In the dream - like in Fatty Bear - an anthropomorphic bear character was walking around a house, but unlike Fatty Bear, this dream-bear tripped and his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ foot came off, which, of course, was terrifying to me at 4/5 years old. Fatty Bear's aesthetic and the basic theme of a bear walking around a house at night reminded me way too deeply of this 27+-year-old dream, and I did play point-and-click games a LOT as a kid, so I think I'm on to something. Final note, Fatty Bear's face in the game is unintentionally kinda scary, his eyes are just little white dots, it's like they're sucking out my soul.
+ the soundtrack is fire
+ vibey nostalgic visual/pixel art
+ you can compose music at the piano
+ you can create eldritch horrors with a head of lettuce
+ you can write slam death metal lyrics on a birthday cake
- the cake recipe is kind of ass. all this effort, pulling an all-nighter, and yet Kayla is going to have the most mid birthday cake ever. what was it all for, Fatty Bear?
Surprise!
It's fun
Alfred Hitchcock's favourite horror game
We need more games where everything you click on does something. I just wish I could save Mr Cabbage and carry him around like Wilson.
He's a Fatty Bear, Childhood validated.
You can write racist remarks on a cake for a black family. Nice.
I have a vague memory of playing this when I was younger, but can't really remember. Either way, it's a short, cute game ideal for kids.
The Fatty Bear you know and love. Rifle around a house, mow a lawn, bake a cake.
I tried to leave a negative review but Fatty broke down my door and started shoving birthday cake down my throat.
He won't stop when will this nightmare end
10/10
My kids love all of the Humongous Entertainment games.
They don't make fun/educational kids games like this anymore.
If you have young kids they are sure to love these games.
Fatty Bear has my family held hostage. I have to play this game for another 37 years before they're released
i can't believe i freed the dog from her present prison only to trick her into going back in
Overview
Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise is a short cute point & click educational game meant for younger kids developed way back in the day and could be a fun little nostalgic romp for some.
It is a very interactive game where almost anything you click will have something happen and definitely captivate the younger audience. At this point there will likely be some things that kids will ask about as there are old technology and concepts that no longer apply in our current modern world.
Although there is a main objective to complete the game has no time limits and kids can explore and figure things out at their own leisure while also playing mini games and learning.
Definitely a good option for young kids to spend hours of fun on.

Fatty Bear's edging surprise. where he has to Jelq for 5 hours without completing.
very wholesome I miss these vibes
Normally, I try to take price, time spent playing the game, and give a look at many aspects of the game I play through. If I was to do that, there are many other games that I would recommend over Fatty Bear. But, I absolutely adore older point-and-click games, especially those which came from Humongous Entertainment. While Fatty Bear only had the one title under his belt, the charm that was felt in many of their catalog is felt still.
The visuals and sound design are on-point. It doesn't have the more fluid and distinct look Humongous's games are known for, but has the old DOS visual style. You can also see this in the first two Putt-Putt games as well. I completely adore the graphics and that alone made me fall in love. The little sight gags when clicking on objects in a room brings me back to my childhood and I find myself with the biggest smile on my face.
The story is bare bones, but it doesn't need to be crazy. A game for kids, a short game that is very easy to playthrough, but that doesn't matter. If you have no idea about these games and are looking for more, this might not be for you. But if you grew up with these games, or find yourself charmed looking at the screenshots and little intro video, pick it up. It brings you back and you'll feel like a kid all over again.
Greatest game to ever be created.
Gaming truly peaked with this game and every other game since only hopes to live up to Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise
Fatty Bear is a queer icon. Stay up all night and dress in drag, hang with your pup and doll friends, compose nxc on the piano, and write your friends dirty messages on their birthday cake before they get up.
I grew up with Humongous Entertainment though and this game's pixel art and soundtrack are some of my favorite examples of color, shape, and energy. Incredible game for young kids and a fun time to goof around in and admire as an adult
Great game that takes me back to my great childhood.
Best childhood game of mine
Fatty Bear´s ist ein tolles Abenteuer für groß und klein.
Very cute adventure game but too short. I replay it every now and then
{Drunk SeriesSeries Review}
Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise is a family friendly point & click adventure about the filthy cheater bear making a surprise party for his human. First of all, who stores sugar in the garage like really you're will to keep walking to your garage every time you need sugar, for real. Secondly, what kind of parent stores their child's birthday present in the middle of the kitchen floor, which is also a dog they warped up in a box without air-holes, and then let it back out to give to the child in the morning..... This family sleeps like a rock with all the noise these toys be making, for real for real. Wish it had more directions, drunk me was straggling to figure out want i needed to do.

a quaint little story. fatty bear has mastered being nonbianary. the set peices are very nice, and I like how you can freely walk around them. that dog is such an annoying little peice of ♥♥♥♥. im sad she never got to see what I wrote on her cake.
This game is amazing for teaching youngsters English with a bit of fun. A thing that is neglected in the game reviews.

Tasty Nostalgia.
This game is pure nostalgia to me, so I'm pretty biased. I first played this game when I was like 6 or something and decided to finally play it again. The voice acting is kinda meh, and the puzzles, if you can even call them that, are extremely easy. I mean it's a kids game so the puzzles won't be too hard. If you're really bored and want a taste of an early 90's point and click game, download this immediately
Cant believe I can play again this childhood game. Works perfectly.
Grew up with this game as a kid. Happy to see it on steam super nostalgic. Great music.
Very good game. Can't put it down. Always surprised by the Birthday surprise. Baldurs Gate 3 is a pale shell compared to this juggernaut of a game.
Of the Humongous entertainment games aimed at the younger demographic, the Fatty Bear offerings are with the youngest in mind. They're very basic, but humorous and charming. Despite being quite dated at this point they are still enjoyable. Best played with a kiddo in your lap.

This was cute :D, it was short and sweet and fairly easy to play but some bits I overlooked and needed a little help. Good game.

Short little birthday fun mostly for kids.
You don't know how long I was looking for this game. As a kid I loved this game, how many interactive things were in it. Now I'm just fascinated by the fact that there are random events and the order of objectives matter. I did two play through because I learned I did one objective early by accident, so I didn't get the rest of the tasks regarding that.
All in all it's very quickly doable, but it's fun for nostalgic reasons.
It's a fun game!
good for younger kids
Nagyon aranyos kis játék. Gyerekkoromban játszottam vele utoljára :)
you can make cakes
slow and boring 1.1/10
Classic gaming right here! Very nostalgic, I wish HE was still making games. <3 (one of my favorites, I really felt I had to be quiet while playing)
Nostalgia trip for dad, a great, easy to play, interactive, humourous game for the kids. The atmosphere in this game is amazing. The music is excellent. Lots of little secrets and details to find makes it highly replayable.
This is my FAVOURITE Humongous Entertainment game. Fatty Bear was my favourite childhood game, and I will always be sad that this beautiful bear never got any follow up from the franchise. Would recommend for everyone, even if you don't know it, it inherently has a sense of nostalgia. Only negative I have to say is that you should not follow this games example in terms of putting puppies in tiny boxes overnight with no air holes for a kids birthday...
This game was one of my favorites on a kid, and now my own child plays it. Such a classic and perfect game for ages 4+
*Looks through telescope*
"Hey, there's Putt-Putt! What's he doing on the moon?"
Great game for 1993
The most game of all time.
Replaying this one in 2022, still holds up well. Great nostalgic feeling, love all the clickables and music. Had fun sharing my cabbage and cake creations with my friends.
Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise is an ancient family friendly 1988/DOS era point and click adventure game running on Steam thanks to the ScummVM engine. Gameplay involves Maniac Mansion/Monkey Island style point and click aventuring combined with a few minigames and "activities" intended to keep young children occupied.
This game is over 25 years old, it's ancient. 4:3, fixed resolution (looks like VGA). Weirdly, the devs have patched it from time to time, but this is really like putting lipstick on the skeleton of a pig that died long ago. I know that's not all that nice to say, but these guys are charging $5 USD for this, when you can play free games for kids, with much higher quality, in browsers or mobile, so how could anyone consider paying for this?
This is just some attempt to cash in on some old abandoned kids game. It's really not cool.
Game is for kids, very interactive, only complaint is it is a little on the short side.
This is a game that my grandma introduced me to as a child and after replaying it recently it brought back so many fond memories. This is a brilliant game for children and I'd really recommend it if you're looking for a game for your child to play. I enjoy playing it as an adult mainly for nostalgia value but I think its can still be a fun game if youre an adult you just might get bored with it quicker as it's not very long!
A Good Point and Click game from the 90s!

I remade the Luigi's Mansion theme on the piano, this is the perfect video game.
Love this game! I remember playing it all the time as a kid.
Scratches a part of brain I didn't know I needed attention. While the graphics have not aged well, this games provides the perfect amount of nostalgic serotonin. Enjoy this little half-hour getaway.
I must say I havent been able to beat it yet, pause, however, pause, the game is good
Pretty cute little game. Definitley an early one. Lots of weird snippets that usually didn't happen in the other games, like continuing to talk over certain things and finding objects being too loud. But, a cute game nonetheless, and one I never grew up knowing about. I wonder why they didn't make more, as birthday surprise seems like a sequel title
Such a great game even after 20+ years!
Fun but short, amazing birthday party, bowling is the best part of the game, 10/10.
Gyerekkorom egyik legkedvesebb játéka.
Egy éjszakád van megcsinálni a kislánynak a tortát.
Nostalgic!
The nostalgia is real. I was gifted then entire bundle of all the Humongous games and replaying them has been amazing. Even after all this time they still hold up. It'd be neat to get remastered versions of any of them.
If you have kids, it's totally worth every penny to get these for them. They'll love every one.
(I'll be leaving the same review for all of these, as there's not much else to say.)
This game is incredible . I wish I had not already been potty trained because it taught me where the "P" goes.
Fatty bear had sexual intercourse with my wife, took custody of my children and won't return them unless I post a positive review of Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise. Send help.
Pretend you're a child and it's a good time. I hate to say that the puzzles stumped me. But they did.
Goes to show that Humongous made great games if I can play this game as an adult that I have no nostalgia for and still have a great time. Enjoyable 1 hour point n click experience. Feels very similar to Putt-Putt Joins the Parade and Goes to the Moon as it was made around the same time of those games. I recommend this game if you like other Humongous games.
I know i probably sound ridiculous but this game is amazing purely for the fact that this is a passion project and has lots of good elements, of course im not heavily interested in young childrens games but you can pretty much interact with everything and i like to mess around in it.

listen fat you gotta birthday
This is an amazing little interactive children's game from 1993 that followed me throughout my childhood. I still remember playing this game on my Windows XP in 2005, when I was 11. If the game was remade now with some HD graphics it would be amazing for the current generation of children to access. I still think this game holds up now, honestly. A child could easily play this and not be fussed by the ancient pixels. I don't feel that the price reflects the 5 minutes of amusement though.
As far as nostalgia goes, I wish all the Humongous Entertainment games were cheaper for what they offer us adults who look back fondly at these amazing point and click edutainment games of the 90's. I'd happily pay them $20-$30 for the lot, but $10 per title and a pack of them all for $130AUD is insanely over priced. It's either 5 minutes of fun for a child or 5 minutes of nostalgia for an adult.
Even on sale I'd be hesitant to buy these games, they just cost too much for what they give.
Whatever I have to say about the price, I recommend this game to the nostalgia trippers like myself and for introducing a child to older retro games, point and click games, educational games or just games in general. These games tick many boxes, have a really wide audience and are timelessly wholesome.
I love Fatty Bear so much.
