I have to say, this game feels a lot like Banished, but with significantly better and more beautiful building aesthetics—especially once you upgrade them to Tier 3 and 4. However, for me, the gameplay still feels somewhat monotonous. You start with a small group of people building a town hall, gathering resources, and expanding your beautiful city while waiting for immigrants to boost your population.

That said, the micromanagement and UI can be exhausting and intrusive. While the wealth of infographics is a nice touch, it can also be overwhelming. I believe city builders released from 2020 onwards should offer more innovation. Personally, I prefer a cleaner and simpler UI and micromanagement style, similar to Manor Lords, though of course, we can’t force one game to be exactly like another.

Farthest Frontier might be better suited for hardcore city-builder fans who enjoy obsessing over every minor detail. For casual players, light micromanagement and a cleaner UI are much more enjoyable, allowing for a more pleasant start while building a beautiful city quickly.

I really did try to like it. The graphics are alright, the city building aspect is feeling more like run down version of Anno, but again - its alright.

What really gets me though is how empty the game feels. The enemies and particularly their mechanics are as plain as it gets. One doesnt even need soldiers or defenses till 6-7h into a game. Just send your villagers, try rotating them as HP drops, and even with 3-4 dead, they just keep on coming anyway. They are expendable, one doesnt really feel connected to them, the city, the progress at all.

The maps themselves, while randomized, kinda all play the same, expect for the most "difficult", where some ressources are just not accessible.

Luxuries can be largly ignored as smithing just yields way too much gold. Its also not necessary for progression, as all that matters is that one has enaugh excess villagers to slot out of food production into smithing. The "events" are predictable, there will be a frost, there will be blizzard, there will be ... one barely notices them anyway. The game feels so particularly too easy.

Lots of potential, as of right now, Timberborn / Anno / Against the Storm / ... offer more. way more.

This is one of my favorite resource/city/survival-builder games out there. The learning curve takes a bit to figure out the systems, but once you do, it's a lot of fun managing everything. I will say, I originally had a 9700x, and once you get your pop above ~1000, the 5x speed TANKS performance (they warn you when you select the option). The 9800x3D helps a lot, so be prepared if you use the 5x speed. I also love the art design of this game, it looks IMO beautiful.

Not a fun game to play. Overall aesthetics are drab and depressing. Even upper tier cities look dark and depressing. Buildings look very similar to each other causing wasted time by clicking on each one to identify. Bad guys hide behind widget labels making it very difficult to target. View doesn’t zoom out far enough to be useful unless you download mods. Too often traders want what you don’t have and don’t want what you have. At the end, you have the option of “taunting” the enemy. The army that showed up was 3 times larger than previous and 5 times tougher.

It's a fun game but good lord it crashes to desktop SOOOOOOOO much. About once every 1-2 hours. Once I finish this current city I'm probably going to uninstall. I want to think I had the same problem a couple years ago when I bought the game so if there are unresolved game crashing bugs after that length of time, it's not a good sign.

A very balanced game, in my opinion. It’s possible to enjoy the big-picture strategy as well as the micromanagement. Like any game, it has its share of trade-offs and bugs, but I won’t list them here since the community is already doing a great job of that. I’d love to see cats, dogs, and tunnels added, and perhaps the ability to advance technology into more modern eras (like the Steam Age). I have yet to find a city builder that is both good-looking and content-rich in multiplayer—please add a multiplayer mode!

I'm playing it since it's early 0.5 (Jack Sparrow mod, if you know you know.) This game deserve the money, The team worked hard and made it evolve, the micro-management is just AWSOME and makes it one of the most complete city builder ever.

So Farthest Frontier is pretty standard city builder in medieval setting. It got better graphics than average title in the genre. However, if you check screenshots and see those big beautiful cities - game actually advises you against making those - limit is only 500 people on default and if you want to increase it - there is a warning regarding impact on performance if you go over 500. Have not tested limits of it myself though, mine got not that much over 500, maybe almost to 600 even, so who knows how and at what point you’d get big fps drops or smth.

So first of all plot - there is none, except for intro, which could be considered one roughly. That’s all.

Onto audio - ost to such games rarely (maybe even never) is anything noteworthy, it just exists to be at very far background just to add to ambience and not conflict with gameplay. Actual ambient sounds play bigger role increasing immersion, making you feel a bit more like there is an actual city that produces all those noises you hear. Same with game sounds - they are made on same level, pretty nicely transporting you to the epoch and place of action - be it mostly wild nature and few people when you start or growing settlement when you finish (cause as mentioned, it’s 500 people, not exactly a metropoly, even at that time).

Graphics as already mentioned are better then most city builders, especially medieval ones - they are stylised to be more realistic a bit, well not like real life realistic, but a nice clean version one. It is possible with some effort and careful planning to create beautiful scenery of a town and its surroundings, just make sure to keep walls out of a picture, cause stone ones especially are ugly by simplicity, not worthy of other buildings, more so when you see them side by side. Some 2d art is really great btw, even though there isn’t much of it in game unfortunately, but you can see the style on steam page or in library in Farthest Frontier picture.

Gameplay is quite standard - you start with almost nothing and gradually develop land and build up your settlement. There are genre regulars - indirect population control, (except military) taking care of housing, creating food production and supply chains, storing it all in specialised structures, introducing more and more industrial capacities and goods, making sure your gathering efforts are up to it, at some point getting some military to defend from raiders. Obviously you also make sure there is a doctor present at some point and construct trading post to make more money and get stuff that is not possible to source otherwise. What is not present in every other city builder is how you get to other technologies - knowledge gradually earned, but more points you get more time it takes to get more, and that’s where university comes where people speed up that process. Also a bunch of professions need some education, which requires school to teach your people and in endgame there is option to construct a guild which gives bonus to whatever branch you assign it to. Oh and also temple does not simply satisfy spiritual needs, it could house and activate relics, pretty powerful stuff that is sold by traders profound in rare ruin excavations.

it's ok. If you got a favorite settlement to city game then this one probably has nothing to offer in all honesty.
If however you are not already into this genre with known favorites and dislikes, then this is probably a good place to start. It seems to tick all the right boxes and not miss hard on anything important to the genre. Though it has nothing all that interesting to set it apart from most others.
Biggest con as far as i can tell is just poor optimizations. The 500 pop cap seems to be for performance reasons more than anything else, going to even just 550 on a serious gamer rig shows significant lag anytime you engage the game systems directly. Though it runs smoothy if left alone and you just use the camera controls to watch. Just starts to chug out when the user wants to interact with game systems.

And from what all i seen, maybe the 500 cap is intended to cap the player from a 100% unlocks in a single game.
That seems to be the only limiting factor otherwise, and you could 100% the tech tree if you could get enough population to work everything it unlocked.

So, maybe not bother with this one, if you already got a favorite in the genre, but yeah check this one out if you don't know the genre all that well. Solid example of the genre but fairly generic all around.

tldr 7.5/10 some qol changes would bump it up to 8.5 maybe even a 9

Pros : 1. You're free to build how you see fit, you're out in the wilds with no one to tell you what to do as you've fled said people. Seeing your crap makeshift town grow into a beautiful city is a rewarding experience.
2. The game overall is nice to look at, sfx really sells the medieval ascetic, you'll feel how alive the town/city is as you hear people going about their business, weather it's talking to a friend, working the forge or chopping a tree.
3. You'll lose hours of your life managing it all.

Cons/QOL changes needed : 1. Foragers need a rework, as their name suggests they forage various plants and other useful things from the land. Problem is that the things they gather are seasonal and you'll have to constantly change their work area as the seasons change. At the start its no big deal, but as time goes on and the city grows with more to manage, you'll tend to forget they exist until its near winter and they collected everything in their work area in spring and have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs near all year. They can be upgraded to have a small garden to grow specific plants you might want, but if its not in their work area, they won't touch it. My suggestion would be to have a huge work area just be around the building itself so you wouldn't have to move it, doing so would make better use of the prio system to let them know what you want collected first before the seasons change and it would seriously cut down on the micro. Also having them join the labor force during winter when there's nothing for them to forage would be nice.
2. Farmers work the fields from spring to the end of autem, but during winter they do nothing, much like a forager waiting for the work area to change. Would be nice to have them join the labor pool during the winter months or when the work you've assigned the field they manage is done for the year.
3. Houses will upgrade based on 2 things, items needed and desirability. Desirability is manageable, just keep the bad smelling/noisy jobs away from where people live while putting things like parks or statues close. What's not manageable is your people not getting the items needed, one of the needs for an upgrade is multiple types of food. But if the villagers don't stock their house with it, it'll never upgrade. Having some way to tell the people in the house to go and get what they need would help or even better some button you check to force collect items when they are available would alleviate this issue.
4. Not a personal problem for me, but this game is very slow paced. Even at 5x speed you'll find yourself waiting for more people to immigrate or come of age to fill the labor pool so more can be done. Also there is no real tutorial that can help to explain what's going on or how things work. Coming patch it seems will address the tutorial issue but we'll see. Some might like to figure it out others not so much.

Overall 7.5/10 With some QOL changes this could be one of the best city builders around so, looking forward to more.

I play many base building and colony games, and I never feel so frustrated. Add a 25x speed mod or you gonna spend half hour just to gain 2 population. I was shock by how slow the game is, it was like a rts but everything moves 20 times slower. ITs insane how 3x speed feels so slow in this game. And the early game was so board I wasted 2 hours afking in 10x speed just to wait the population to grow in order to unlock the center level. Which btw you cant do S* before that.

This is the kind of game I would typically love. I got some enjoyment out of it. But there are some design decisions that just ruin it. I just can't stick with it after being punished for no reason.

If you have a mechanic to punish the player, then there has to be something reasonable the player can do to mitigate that problem. This game has a bunch of mechanics where there is no reasonable solution.

1, storms cause fires. Okay, that's fine. It encourages me to create buildings that are far apart to avoid the fire spreading. Except...... that doesn't work. The fire spreads anyway. If there is a mechanic that limits fire spread, it is wildly overtuned because there is nothing reasonable I can do to prevent it. Wide boulevards that serve no other purpose but to act as a firebreak allows the fire to spread the same as normal. So what should I do? Build lightning rods? This mechanic just punishes the player for no reason.

2, predators. Wolves and bears and boars, oh my. Sure, entirely reasonable thing to have in the game. What isn't reasonable is villager AI that causes them to walk in the general direction of predators and proceed to get mauled to death one after another after another after another after another after another until half of your village is dead. What am I supposed to do in this situation? Sure I can send a hunter to aggressively hunt down any predator I find, but I have to MANUALLY do this. I can't just plop down the work area for the hunter over the predator den because that, apparently, does nothing. I have to micro my hunter to kill the wolves in a game that otherwise has no micro. It's mind-boggling.

This should be the kind of semi-cozy city builder game that you play after work to relax, but these obnoxious punishing mechanics and convoluted design render the entire product unnecessarily painful to play.

Je ne comprends pas comment beaucoup de personnes trouvent qu'il est un excellent city-builder... Le jeu est rempli de mécaniques non achevées, voir même inexistantes.

-Vous avez une personne blessée? aucun moyen de la transporter vers le bâtiment de soins. Elle va rester la à crever sans qu'aucun PNJ ne s'en soucie.
-Aucune possibilité de pouvoir gérer les stocks manuellement, ou imposer aux pnj d'aller stocker automatiquement des ressources dans les entrepôts correspondants. Ce qui fait que votre nourriture est stockée n'importe ou sauf dans les greniers. Et donc vous avez plein de pertes alimentaires parce que la nourriture périme.
-Au début vous ne gagnez presque rien en or, mais la plupart des constructions importantes nécessité de l'or. Vous attendez donc comme un débile à attendre que l'or soit amassé au fil des années. (oui oui j'ai fais un marché)
-Vous êtes attaqué très vite en début de partie, mais vous n'avez aucun bâtiment militaire pour vous défendre, ou alors... il faut de l'or!! que vous n'avez presque pas au début.
-Impossible d'armer les villageois pour se défendre. Vous n'aurez que votre chasseur pour vous défendre face aux pillards. Et quelques villageois qui vont tirer depuis leur maison s'ils ont des arcs à flèches.

Et ce sont la des incohérences qu'il y a dès le début du jeu. J'ai pris la peine de chercher s'il y avait des solutions à ces problèmes... RIEN, que ce soit en demandant à l'IA, ou en cherchant sur des forums.

Je comprends pas comment on peut aimer un jeu pas fini, alors que lorsque de bons jeux sortent, ils se font allumer pour des âneries.

An excellent city builder experience with very little awkwardness.
The game doesnt hold your hand like others do, and for me that's a plus!
Had multiple restarts figuring out the correct order to build my resource generation, and to me, learning how to ace a game is half the fun.
Very well put together in this day and age of games being Early Access and unfinished forever. Playable right out of launch, with GREAT bones and foundation. I look forward to seeing what else the developers can throw at us players to fiddle with!

Alors un jeu qui, quand on arrive à anticiper les deux trois ressources auxquelles il faut veiller à ne pas manquer, est un peu chill. Seul remarque : on passe son temps à abattre des arbres pour la ressource principale, ce qui est légèrement rébarbatif. Durante le lunghe sessioni di gioco con FF, non ho mai provato la sensazione di aver speso soldi inutilmente. Grafica appagante, dinamiche di gioco ben strutturate, benchè lo staff di sviluppo sta pianificando upgrade gratuiti per migliorare gli aspetti in cui la community ha evidenziato lacune. Giocando a FF fin dalla sua versione in early access, posso dire che il gioco ha fatto molti passi avanti, ed attendo i futuri due DLC, portandomi dietro una bella porzione di hype.
Unica, per me, pecca e richiesta a gran voce: per favore create la versione per Mac. Graie mille.

I put most of my playtime into the beta version of this game, and whilst I do love the game itself, I fully assumed the crazy 10-20mins load times would be fixed for the full release version, and since it wasn't, I really can't rate this game as a positive. Also when returning to play the full version there was lag for some reason, even though very little had changed.

Smart usage of the Grim Dawn assets to build something entirely different - and like Grim Dawn, it's very enjoyable to play! The level of management and caretaking between the individual settler and the entire colony is spot on! There are many fresh ideas and features for this type of genre. A lot of good stuff inside.

Downer: Completing the game doesn´t feel rewarding. More celebration is needed!

Just like majority of the comments say. Banished 2.0. All the aspects of banished, but now with defense from predators and raiders, more complexed farming, and more resources. Town walls, guard towers, arming citizens... I really do enjoy it.

Take City Skylines, Banished and Dawn of Man and bring them all together in one game, which is FF. This game take some time to understand, so be prepared for a learning curve. It has strategy, randomness and there is possibility for failure which makes it fun to play. Additionally, the knowledge tree takes time and some items you can only get through merchants, so it keeps you engaged.

I was disappointed by this one; compared to similar games in the genre, the graphics feel dated, the UI is ugly and overwhelming, some systems are unnecessarily complicated, the pace is too slow even at max speed, and resources required for most things feel imbalanced. I often sit there on max speed just waiting for stuff to get done, wondering if the villagers are even doing their jobs. The AI feels dated too, both for your villagers and soldiers as well as enemy raiders - like I'm playing Age of Empires. Even actions like chopping down trees are painfully slow, and it's baffling to watch them walk to put out a building fire, or just ignore it and carry on working nearby or casually walk into the burning house.

I was also disappointed by the lack of customisation options for a new game; you can disable a few key aspects and decide on a few bits of difficulty, but not enough to adjust the speed, building costs (except the free creative mode), length of seasons...

I just can't recommend this - there are far more enjoyable games in the genre out there.

I rarely leave reviews for any games, but the main reason I'm writing a review for this game is the company and staff. They're the epitome of what a gaming company should be about, the game! They constantly release great updates, new content, and listen to the community. This game will set the standard for city builders at the current rate, and I have loved almost every minute of this game.

My only complaints:
1) Optimization could be better
2) Raiders have uneven behavior but that adds flavor

That's it. This game is a must-buy if you like city builders in any form. Wonderful work and kudos to the Crate team!

Farthest Frontier is a medieval survival city-builder similar to titles like Anno, Banished, and Dwarf Fortress. Its simulations have genuine depth: resources, labor, water access, land fertility, human and livestock health, seasonal cycles, and other systems all interact in meaningful ways, creating a web of interdependencies that reward careful, long-term thinking. The visuals are among the best in the genre, and the game requires a mix of skill across long-term spatial planning, resource management, and RTS combat.

Given that it was recently released, there are some rough edges. There's no in-game tutorial or guide, which is fine for players like me who prefer to figure things out, but I get that it poses a meaningful barrier for others. The UI feels clunky, and performance degrades noticeably in the mid-to-late game (even on high-end hardware like my PC, which has a 7800X3D and 5090). Content variety is also thin across several areas, including combat, buildings, itemization, and decorations. And while a lack of story or lore won't bother everyone, enough players have raised concerns that it's worth mentioning.

To their credit, Crate Entertainment (also known for Grim Dawn) has been consistently engaged with the community, acknowledging feedback openly and updating their development roadmap accordingly. Patch 1.1 was just announced at the time of this review, and a minor and major DLC are reportedly underway as well. Rough edges aside, I strongly recommend trying the game to anyone interested. The foundations are there, and if Crate keeps building on them, then this game could grow to contend with established franchises like Anno.

The game looks nice and the mechanics could be interesting, but the game moves at such a slow pace and there are no quests, no story line to follow, no tasks or challanges that it all just seems so boring and uneventfull, that it makes me whish I came to this conclusion earlier when I still could've refunded it. Bit of a let down.

Farthest Frontier takes the best aspects of settlement games like Banished and combines them with the mechanics of "civilization" city builders like the Sierra games (Caesar 3, Pharoah, Rise of the Middle Kingdom). This game is pretty unique as you make a settlement and all of the decisions from barely surviving carry over to give you problems/benefits later on as you expand and thrive as a town.

This game is basically Banished+ with how it starts and how its UI/mechanics work. You start with handful of settlers and assign people to tasks. Balancing travel time and harvesting basic resources just to survive. The big difference though is there is a lot more variables like food spoilage, crop weeds/rockiness/fertility, disease and aggressive animals/raiding parties. These variables are also affected by the game having different map types and a technology tree. On an more mountainous arid map it may be better to focus on hunting and rushing into a mining - preserving meat to have long term food and trading heavily in metals/rocks. On a lush plains map it may make sense to invest technology into growing forests to have wood and just overproduce food through farming and accepting that a lot of it will spoil.

After a couple of years the settlement starts to take the form of a town. It now needs a better way to keep food from spoiling, defend itself from raiders that are growing to size of small armies, ward off diseases that are actually historically accurate in how dangerous they are and make money. Like the Sierra games houses level up and generate more taxes/hold more people from getting access to resources and luxuries (this is handled through markets, not walkers). Every level requires more and more resources and ever increasing complexity.

However, this game is more than just a combo of the two before-mentioned games as it has alot more choice and replaybility. What is particularly unique about this mid-late part of the game is that a lot of terraforming starts to happen. Resources run out, animals overhunted to extinction, land where cattle was raised becomes fertile enough for farms or is destroyed by over farming and forests begin to disappear if technology was not invented to manage it. Unlike the Sierra games or Banished there is a lot more decisions with trade-offs. Decisions made to just barely survive may become crisis later on. However, the best part of it is that this game is intuitive and “historical” play is optimal without being forced. One example is the three-field crop rotation system of having one field fallow (fed on by animals eating clover), one growing regenerate crops that still give food and one growing intensive crops (wheat, flax) on a rotation actually works and you will likely get there naturally like your ancestors did by just playing the game optimally with the mechanics available.

Comprei só para testar. Aí vi que o jogo tem mecânicas que não me agradam. Porque eu joguei o Manor Lords, e ele tem uma atenção muito grande aos detalhes. Já o Fathest Frontier não tem muita atenção a detalhes, o foco dele são mais as mecâncias. Aí eu não gostei.
