Fabledom is a competent medieval city builder that, if it had come out a decade ago, might be seen as a classic. Today, it comes across as a bit dull, outdated and perfunctory. It's not a bad game by any means, it just doesn't hold up when compared to similar games released in the last couple of years. Because it doesn't do anything particularly wrong and cozy indie games by small studios get a free pass on Steam, this game will have a higher review score than it probably deserves. But for many players this will be a pretty forgettable experience that they'll spend a few hours with and move on to something that's simply deeper and better.

Fabledom follows the typical grid pattern, building-placement formula that Banished nailed down back in the mid-2010s. You plop down houses, work buildings, a few decorations and off you go. Many buildings have a positive or negative effect radius, so you're constantly balancing proximity for efficiency with desirability. You've seen this formula before. The twist is that you're in a bit of a fantasy universe, taken out of the tales of Mother Goose and other novels, so the buildings are a bit more whimsical. So you might get the odd beanstalk or witches' house and you have a hero with your army that you can use on missions and a bit of combat. But the core of the game is the building placement and there's nothing new to be found here. Put in the order for the buildings to be built, watch them get built (slowly, more on that later), place a couple of workers and do it all over again. You'll balance the normal farms, wheat-to-bread production chain, wood, coal, stone, iron, planks....is any of this sounding familiar? If you've played a medieval city builder in the last 15 years, it is. The supply chains are very basic in Fabledom.

Perhaps one of the biggest differences is that your Fablings don't have babies. They just move in if there's space to do so. They can die if you screw up like running out of food or if there's a sickness but there's no birth cycle, education or anything like that. There's also no tech tree either. You unlock new buildings strictly by population numbers. So there's really very little incentive to do anything but put down as many food production centers and houses as your coal/wood supplies can support, especially at the start of the game.

There are other leaders around the world and you can do some basic missions and diplomacy with them, but this area of the game isn't particular compelling either. Once you build a messenger's guild you can send them out on some basic missions but I didn't find this particularly engaging. It's a decent way to get more resources or perhaps help/hurt a nearby leader but that's about it. Likewise, there's a bit of a romance aspect where you can court a nearby leader. But again the systems here weren't engaging to me and it takes a lot to progress the relationship, so I never did get to the point I got married. Then again, neither did the vast majority of Fabledom Steam players.

Reading the above, you'd rightfully get the impression that I'm not particularly enthused about Fabledom and you'd be right, despite my thumb's up rating. So let's talk about why that is.

The main reason is that Fabledom does nothing new. This gameplay formula was created, popularized by Banished, perfected by other titles and the genre has largely moved on. The entire gameplay loop is very dated. It's not just me. 65% of the owners of the game got to a population level of 25 people. If we use that as the base for anyone who has spent more than 30 minutes with the game, then fewer than 40% of that same player base got to a town of even 200 people or built a castle. Considering players of building games tend to stick with them, that's indicative of a game that just isn't holding the attention of most people who tried to play it.

The graphics are about as dated as the game play. I want to be clear that they're not ugly to be sure. They're bright, colorful with a bit of a cartoony art style but they're a bit fuzzy, even on the best graphics quality. Turning off the film grain helps a bit in this regard. But ultimately the game looks charming but a bit old. The graphics would have been good a decade ago and acceptable 5 years ago. Now they look worse than modern mobile titles. This isn't a game where I sit back and marvel at my creation like I would in Anno or Farthest Frontier because the visuals just don't do it for me. I understand that this is a 2-person studio but this game looks a bit out of date already. I might be wrong on this but I don't think this will be a game that visually ages well. The music isn't really any better. It's entirely forgettable and something most of us are likely to turn down or off entirely.

The tutorial is mainly a set of goals to figure out the basics. But those goals just kind of....end, leaving the player wondering what to do. And there are many unexplained concepts and systems, which cause confusion and anger on the forums. It doesn't help that there are some odd bugs in the game as well. At one point I wasn't getting any prompts to get new people in my town even though I had space. It turned out my desirability dropped to zero, which is a practical impossibility. Now as a new player it took me 30 minutes to figure that out because desirability isn't explained. And reloading the save did nothing, so I figured my entire game was hosed. Ending the game entirely and re-launching it fixed this bug but it left a bad impression because I could have easily given up and uninstalled the game. It happened one other time as well, with a save, quit and reload the fix again. So I'm not sure what is going on there.

But my main issue with this game is the pacing. It's gawd-awful slow and even at the highest game speed it takes my Fablings a long time to do most anything. It'll take many minutes for them to make 20 planks and get those to a job site to build a single building. If it wasn't for pop up messages I have to respond to, I'd probably just let it run overnight to collect as many materials as possible to make progress faster when I'm actually playing it. But because the pop ups stop the clock, I can't do that. As such, I actually fell asleep playing this. It's that slow.

This game could probably use the benefit of modding given the small development team but the devs didn't build in any mod support or Steam Workshop support and that's a shame.

Finally, there are some end-game type problems with Fablings not relocating to their work place, making the game very tedious and requiring a lot of micro-management to change their workplaces since you can't change their home. I've already seen evidence of the impact of this in my small city and it does impact my desire to grow a larger city. That level of micromanagement isn't what I'm looking for from a cozy, casual city builder.

So what the game ends up being is a competent, semi-cute city builder that's entirely redundant and fairly forgettable. If you're into city builders and you've played a bunch of them already, then maybe give this a try but get it on a steep discount.

Tras 12 horas de juego NO lo recomiendo, quizá en oferta pero la verdad no lo vale, el sistema de administración es pésimo, se te muere la gente, los fablins no están felices por que su trabajo queda demasiado lejos de la zona residencial, los eventos no son la gran cosa.

Al principio del juego esta todo bonito pero mientras lo juegas en lugar de tener un sentimiento de logro por el avance, sientes que manejas un barco lleno de agujeros por los que entra el agua se empieza a hundir y tu solo tratas de tapar esos agujeros pero cada vez que tapas uno se abren otros dos.

I went into this game super curious… and came out like “that’s it?”

It’s a cozy, easygoing city builder with a lovely aesthetic, but it leans a bit too much into simplicity. The romance system — which I was most excited about — didn’t really deliver.

Not a bad game at all, just a bit repetitive and lacking something to keep you hooked long-term.

(And yes, I married Sir Payne. Obviously.)

I've been this game just over a week and I'm enjoying it. I've started over a number of times but that's because I'm one of those. People that needs a "neat" village.

There are some cons that are really annoying.
It would be better if there was "carriers" every game I've played like this has carriers to run the goods around instead of the people in the building.
Places like the market place, inn, cafe are quite pointless really. They're only for decoration. It would be so much better if trading could be done at market place and my villagers could get food from the inns and cafes etc
Stone depletion is quite quick so make sure you have plenty of money.
Bigger land would be great, and the chance to take over land from others. The map / land could do with being a lot bigger.
The game is fun to kill a bit of time. It could be so much better with just a few tweaks.
I'm an old school settlers fan and this could have had huge potential.

I've got so bored having to constantly reassign fablings by how far they are from their jobs that at some point I gave up.

I really tried different approaches to deal with the work assignments system. Building houses close to job sites, leave one or two empty houses for newcomers close to their eventual jobs, using upgraded roads in an efficient flow web, tweak jobs here and there when the population starts to grow, and eventually have some surplus for the winter.

Then after a few winters, chaos starts to grow as they need more resources. At this point the game's auto-assign mechanic fails miserably. The fablings are assigned to work on the other side of the map, far away from their original homes because you CAN'T move them to a house closer to the available job.

Apparently the game follows the houses' construction order (or randomizes, idk) where newcomers will drop and are forced to take any job available regardless of their distance from it, leaving it up to you to deal with the mess. Instead, the game could simply auto-assign them to a job closer to home by one click in the Workers menu or let us move them from house to house independently.

I've found some other little bugs, like locating fablings outside the world map and a few graphic glitches, but nothing unexpected for an indie game.

This game had so much potential. So much. It's a shame that this micromanagement is such a pain in the ass.

Then finally, I missed the refund window, playing at a slow pace as you expect from a COZY game, and I really regret that I bought this one.

TLDR:

I've got very bored and angry killing all my fablings after a breakdown because the work management system sucks. And I explain why it sucks. Also missed the refund window; it was supposed to be a cozy game.

This game is so delightful and addictive. But now that I’m over 8 hours in, my kingdom has grown enough that it’s a little unwieldy so I stopped playing. I spend a lot of time scrolling the camera around my enormous territory and squinting looking for random buildings that I can’t remember where I placed.

Достаточно милый градострой с пониженным уровнем ответственности, накосячить и довести до вымирания поселение достаточно сложно.
Производственные цепочки простые, механики несложные, картинка красивая.
Но вот ближе к концу начинаются приколы:
1) Игра начинает неистово лагать даже на мощной системе, причем лагать прям очень неприятно
2) Игра начинает душить последними квестами, которые в моменте начинают подбешивать
3) Последние часов 5 это исключительно возня с квестами, градострой заканчивается

Пробовать можно, главное не задушиться как я

Si vienes de city-builders complejos, Fabledom es un soplo de aire fresco. Es visualmente precioso; su nivel artístico y estilo de "cuento de hadas". Es un placer ver cómo crece tu reino.
Aunque mecánicamente es más sencillo que otros títulos, no deja de ser extremadamente divertido y agradable de jugar. Es la mezcla perfecta entre relax y gestión con personalidad (el sistema de diplomacia y romance es un puntazo).
Tras completar mi primera partida en dificultad Media (una experiencia muy fluida y satisfactoria), me he lanzado directo a la máxima dificultad. El juego gana una capa de gestión de recursos mucho más tensa que castiga más los errores, lo cual le da una vida extra genial para los que buscamos un poco más de "picante".
En resumen: Un juego con alma, estéticamente impecable y muy recomendado tanto para desconectar como para buscar un reto en sus niveles más altos.
Es ideal para enpezar con el genero :)

This game is so much fun, and that's from someone who doesn't usually play city-building games. The graphics, the animations, the gameplay - it's all very satisfying and colorful. You really feel like you're creating a magical story from a fairytale.

There are some bugs, of course - my fablings had a hard time figuring out roads on hills, and a few died while standing outside the hospital instead of going inside. And honestly, the men you can pick from to "romance" are much more "doofus"-looking and goofy than the women, which sucks.

But overall, I spent almost 100 hours planning out my massive kingdom, and in the end, Trinae was a gorgeous Disneyworld-like masterpiece whose Princess was married to cross-eyed Ramone who speaks only in poetry. Eh, you win some, you lose some.

To summarize my opinions on the game: this is a fun, if simplistic and easy not to lose, city builder. 6/10 experience that could easily be improved with quality of life inclusions to alleviate simple infrastructure headaches that are more intrusive and annoying than they are enjoyable to interact with.

in particular, a public transportation system like wagons or carriages to get fablings around and, by extension, allow them to work further from their homes without it being an issue would be nice. also, an inclusion of a way to use marketplaces as a resource hub to distribute to stockpiles around the kingdom to simplify construction material delivery would be nice as currently it's a process to get resources from the production hubs to the construction zones around the kingdom. Even having the laborer huts and laborers guilds being able to store construction materials would be preferable to the current systems. At first, I expected fairies to solve that problem but it's certainly not the case in practice.

In the late game as well it would be nice to have a way to relocate resources or invest in a creation of a new resource deposit in a location of choice to simplify supply chains (especially prismatic liquid. when they spawn far apart it can make for incredibly long delivery times if grain and grapes need to be pulled from faraway supply chains especially when the grapes are being pulled for grape juice elsewhere).

As for combat, micro-ing the soldiers and hero is a bit of a task as the formations aren't remembered even after you set them up and you have to manually position them and click the keep formation box every time you select a group which makes it burdensome to control large groups of soldiers manually. It doesn't even keep the swordsmen in front of the archers by default if you select both in the same group without the keep formation button checked. On the plus side, the soldiers aren't even needed once you have defenses built and prismatic fluid so you mostly just keep a reserve of soldiers to win the gold award from having a big military and to dispatch on off-world missions that require them, otherwise they just stand around as the troll camps melt for free once you have sufficient defensive structures and the prismatic liquid for ammunition. Sorry warrior princess, I'd use my military more if I had a reason. I'm sure Sir Payne appreciated the suffering inflicted though whenever I forgot to click keep formation and watched groups of archers move in front of my swordsmen and hero attacking troll camps.

I would like to see commoners play a bigger role in the game than they currently do. At present, there's very few jobs you need commoners for when you unlock them and the only food production chain you can do without peasants is fish. It ends up feeling like you should never even get commoners once you have your embassy, marketplaces, and laborers' guilds staffed until you need grape juice and the palace staffed but even then that's like 11-14 more jobs, maybe 40-50 jobs across the entire kingdom you need them for if you utilize laborers guilds and marketplaces heavily. I almost always end up wanting peasants unless I need the tax money because peasants are infinitely more useful in nearly every production chain.

Also, am I doing something wrong or does it really take 5-6 years on full production for a feast hall to make the resources for a feast? And why does it only take grape juice to make the supplies? It shouldn't take this long to create the supplies for a grape juice party? Feast supplies really need reworked, overhauled, whatever you wanna call it.

On a surface level I understand why it isn't a thing, but I would appreciate if trading with the other kingdoms was an option instead of just praying for a reward from off-world missions to pop up otherwise you gotta farm it yourself or roll it off the merchant random event or get it from troll camp clearing. It seems odd to have so much interaction with other kingdoms with no trade to speak of. I feel bad for the merchant prince.

Like I said at the beginning of the review, this game is fun and holds a lot of potential to be incredible. It's just held back by a lot of simple logistical issues and bottlenecks that a few implemented systems could easily fix. Distance from housing affecting jobs with no recourse beyond "build houses closer to jobs", difficulty getting construction materials to projects that are far from hubs beyond finessing things with marketplaces or stockpiles that shouldn't be necessary, Commoners being useless beyond a few necessary applications, and prismatic liquid placement (and to a lesser extent iron ore as well) with no possible way to relocate it make it frustrating at times to build around the restrictions that you would expect the game to have innate ways to circumvent that simply don't exist in the current iteration. I'm hopeful over time systems will be introduced to alleviate my sticking points with the game but it's a small dev team so at the same time I'm not holding my breath for an update, nice as it would be to see the game improved and built upon.

Gameplay:
Il gameplay è buono e pienamente godibile. Non introduce particolari innovazioni nel genere dei city builder strategici, ma riesce comunque a divertire grazie al suo approccio più leggero e all’ambientazione fantasy. La componente gestionale e quella creativa funzionano bene insieme, permettendo di sviluppare gradualmente il proprio regno.

Trama / Ambientazione:
L’ambientazione fantasy è ben realizzata e segue una progressione interessante: si parte con strutture medievali semplici e povere per arrivare, con lo sviluppo del regno, a zone più ricche con abitazioni migliori e palazzi. La trama è molto semplice e fa da contorno al gameplay: il giocatore interpreta un principe o una principessa che guida il proprio regno tra relazioni, amori e scontri con altri regni. Gli elementi narrativi compaiono occasionalmente tramite dialoghi man mano che il regno cresce.

Grafica:
La grafica è buona ma non particolarmente impressionante. Lo stile è piacevole e funzionale al genere, e c’è anche la possibilità di zoomare fino a osservare dal punto di vista dei cittadini del proprio regno. Tuttavia, a livelli di zoom più elevati sarebbe stato interessante vedere un po’ più di dettaglio negli elementi.

Audio:
Il comparto audio è piuttosto semplice. Le musiche e i suoni fanno da sottofondo all’espansione del regno senza risultare invadenti, accompagnando l’esperienza in modo tranquillo.

Longevità:
Il gioco si posiziona nella media del genere. Non introducendo grandi innovazioni, può risultare meno coinvolgente sul lungo periodo. Tuttavia rimane un titolo piacevole da aprire ogni tanto per progredire con il proprio regno, anche per diverse settimane o mesi, dedicandogli qualche ora alla volta.

Ottimizzazione tecnica:
L’ottimizzazione potrebbe essere migliorata. Il gioco non imposta un limite di fps e tende a spingere l’hardware al massimo anche appena avviato. Non causa cali di prestazioni evidenti, ma può portare a un utilizzo eccessivo delle risorse e a temperature più alte. Limitando manualmente gli fps a 60 tramite driver il problema si risolve facilmente. Il V-Sync integrato inoltre non sembra funzionare perfettamente e può introdurre alcuni stutter.

Conclusione:
Fabledom è un buon city builder fantasy che, pur non introducendo grandi novità nel genere, riesce a offrire un’esperienza piacevole e rilassante. Grafica e comparto audio sono nella media, mentre la trama resta piuttosto semplice. L’ottimizzazione tecnica ha qualche limite ma con piccoli accorgimenti l’esperienza resta godibile. Gameplay:
The gameplay is good and fully enjoyable. It does not introduce particular innovations in the genre of strategic city builders, but it still manages to entertain thanks to its lighter approach and fantasy setting. The managerial and creative components work well together, allowing you to gradually develop your own kingdom.

Plot / Setting:
The fantasy setting is well realised and follows an interesting progression: we start with simple and poor mediaeval structures to arrive, with the development of the kingdom, in richer areas with better houses and palaces. The plot is very simple and outlines the gameplay: the player plays a prince or princess who leads his kingdom between relationships, loves and clashes with other kingdoms. Narrative elements occasionally appear through dialogues as the kingdom grows.

Graphics:
The graphics are good but not particularly impressive. The style is pleasant and functional to the genre, and there is also the possibility of zooming up to observe from the point of view of the citizens of their own kingdom. However, at higher zoom levels it would have been interesting to see a little more detail in the elements.

Audio:
The audio sector is quite simple. The music and sounds are the background to the expansion of the kingdom without being intrusive, accompanying the experience in a quiet way.

Longevity:
The game is averaged in the genre. By not introducing great innovations, it can be less engaging in the long run. However, it remains a pleasant title to open from time to time to progress with one's kingdom, even for several weeks or months, dedicating a few hours at a time.

Technical optimisation:
Optimisation could be improved. The game does not set an fps limit and tends to push the hardware to the maximum even as soon as it starts. It does not cause noticeable drops in performance, but can lead to excessive resource utilisation and higher temperatures. By manually limiting the fps to 60 via driver the problem is easily solved. The integrated V-Sync also does not seem to work perfectly and may introduce some stuttering.

Conclusion:
Fabledom is a good fantasy city builder that, while not introducing great news in the genre, manages to offer a pleasant and relaxing experience. Graphics and audio compartment are average, while the plot remains rather simple. Technical optimisation has some limits but with small tricks the experience remains enjoyable. Too bad for the absence of the official Italian language, even if the community has created translation mods that allow you to play it without problems even in our language.

Absolutely adore this game! It's a cozy city builder with very few mechanics to learn. Most of the recent reviewers seem to note that farmers will starve despite being food, which is why I'm posting, because they seem to have misunderstood a fundamental part of the logistics management. The skill in this game doesn't come from idly putting everyone in farms and waiting for gold; it's an active logistical challenge to make sure farmers are housed close to their workplaces so they are both happy and have time to get food. So a lot of the game is figuring out your own personal strategies to balance growth, housing types, and the availability of workers to provide the role you need them to play. Which makes it fun and challenging the larger your town gets and the more you need to balance. It took me a while but happy to say I've achieved all the achievements, and am happily waiting on whatever comes out as Fable 2.0, because I am so excited for whatever succeeds this as a sequel.

Le jeu ne mérite pas toutes ces notes négatives.
Sans être incroyable il est bon, il est mignon et il tourne bien.
Il manque de fonctionnalités et est assez limité, mais quand on s'y plonge on oublie vite.
Peut-être trop cher pour ce qu'il est, mais à moins de 10€ en réduction ça vaut clairement le coup.

This is a very chill, building and beauty focused city builder. The music is relaxing and the art style is very pleasing. It lacks the depth of other games like Manor lords and Farthest Frontier but that's part of it's charm. It's a good way to unwind and it's worth the $20 all day.

Cute citybuilder with a narrative and a slow but steady progression.
Building a decorative city is rewarded.
Note that many decorative structures can be build in backyards and on roads and the road still works.
Also roads are not really need, but it will get your people around faster.
Played 24 hour thus far and enjoying it.

Технически играть не возможно. Перегружает комп в 100, из-за чего ПК намертво зависает... так же, например, хотел по всем постройкам поменять работников, начал быстро прокликивать и игра зависла. Я так понял что у многих такие проблемы и не только эти. Так же судя по реддиту проблемы не фиксятся разрабами... Жаль, игра выглядит и играется супер приятно, хотелось бы ее пройти, но увы...

Construyes tu reinito entre granjas, habichuelas gigantes, romances diplomáticos y decisiones ligeramente cuestionables según crees que te convienen, mientras un narrador con cero intención de ser neutral comenta tus jugadas juzgándote a cada paso. Es estratégico, sí, pero también encantador al usar el tono de los cuentos de hadas.

Tiene ese equilibrio perfecto entre gestionar recursos con dignidad y aceptar que tu pueblo probablemente sobrevivirá a pesar de ti y de tus elecciones románticas. Ligero, divertido y sorprendentemente adictivo. Construir nunca fue tan cuqui… ni tan dramáticamente épico.

没看加速玩第二个档还是被恶心才发的，领取任务结算就直接卡死了，反馈隔了一个月也没用；虽然游戏是个半成品，还是想把成就做完。建筑种类太少、税率调节只有三档，不够灵活，前期大部分农民只能种田，农场放置的天地只能在20块以下，不然到夏天都锄不完地，塞进去一个英雄很突兀

It's alright. Kinda fun but not much going on. Maybe because I played at easy level, it was easy to grow. I have an army that I don't use much. I send soldiers to missions, couple of them die. I build walls but no army approach. Like I said it's just alright.

Ich finde das Spiel super und habe es regelrecht durchgesuchtet :D

Aber wie einige bereits geschrieben haben, verträgt das Spiel durchaus noch etwas mehr Tiefe – zum Beispiel, wenn es um die Hochzeit oder ein Festmahl geht und man nicht nur bloße Effekte erhält. Auch im Bereich Story könnte es mehr sein.

Ich persönlich fände es toll, wenn andere Herrscher das eigene Reich besuchen würden und dies auch visuell dargestellt wäre. Oder wenn der jeweilige Prinz oder die jeweilige Prinzessin nach der Hochzeit gelegentlich im Reich erscheinen würde und man mit ihm interagieren kann

Absolutely loving this game. it's such a vibe. a nice slow-paced city builder that is filled with whimsy and surprises. the tutorial is excellent and inobtrusive, the game is easy to get the hang of, and the overall aesthetic is so perfectly dialed-in. this game knows what it's about, and it's a delight to spend time in.

游戏很不错，画风也很能让人接受，任务系统还挺有趣。小仙女太可爱了！

但个人感觉有以下几点不足：
1.教导指引只出现一次，无法重复观看；
2.只能把家拆了才能赶居民出来重新去工作地附近的新房子，如果可以直接从房子剔出之后自动加入空余新房子就好了；
3.四星救援贵族任务（奖励是1贵族或2贵族）出现任务完成后贵族直接入住，但是确认不了完成任务的框（金色问号）打开后没有确认图标。试过重上、读档均没有用；
4.伐木范围比较分散，有时候需要一大片范围弄两个基地伐木；
5.战争系统有点鸡肋，只提示有新建筑（如弩箭、迫机炮），但是没有指引怎么进行建筑或者安装，需要慢慢尝试才之后是在城墙升级之后再次点击才有这个建筑。另外巨魔出现为什么不可以自动索敌攻击，还要军队慢悠悠走过去才可以开始战斗啊，那我城墙武器的意义何在。

但，总体真的不错。

Bon petit jeu, je me suis bien amusée. Cependant, pas mal de points dérangent. Le problème de stockage est insupportable, 50 de stockage pour une ferme, c'est trop handicapant. On devrait pouvoir améliorer les stockage des bâtiments contre des pièces, ou quelque chose comme ça. De plus, les relations avec les autres souverains ne sont pas très intéressantes, il faudrait les améliorer, que ce soit leur difficulté ou leurs avantages. Pour finir, les résidences. Déjà que peu de personnes peuvent rejoindre notre village (ce qui est franchement énervant et ralenti le gameplay au maximum, point à améliorer), quand on reçoit nos 2 pauvres paysans tous les 8 (! c'est long) jours, un sert à être chef de foyer et donc ne peut pas travailler, c'est très frustrant. Les développeurs devraient se pencher sur ces points car cela agace très très rapidement.

Lovely setting, but the balancing is frustrating. Resource production is way too slow to keep up with the population growth, even when buildings show 110% efficiency. Predicting food sustainability is guesswork at best. The micro-management of worker housing is tedious and limited, making it hard to optimize walking distances effectively. Additionally, Winter feels pointless as it just halts production without adding engaging mechanics, and the snowy map makes navigation harder. A cute game, but currently too slow and cumbersome to be truly enjoyable.
