While its age is immediately apparent in presentation and mechanics, the ideas at its core remain strikingly creative and continue to set it apart from more conventional action titles.

The premise places you in command of four GenoHunters, genetically engineered soldiers sent to reclaim an alien planet overrun by hostile parasitic lifeforms. Instead of presenting a traditional hero’s journey or heavy narrative exposition, Evolva frames its story as a functional backdrop for experimentation and survival. Each mission unfolds across large, linear alien environments filled with aggressive creatures, environmental hazards, and occasional boss encounters. Different enemies respond better to specific abilities, encouraging players to diversify their squad rather than specialize every GenoHunter the same way. Switching between squad members during combat adds another dimension, allowing you to adapt on the fly if a particular build proves ineffective. While enemy AI can be inconsistent and encounters occasionally devolve into chaotic firefights, the freedom to approach battles with different evolutionary strategies keeps the experience engaging.

Visually and mechanically, Evolva clearly shows its age. Environments are often shrouded in fog, textures are low-resolution, and animations can feel stiff by modern standards. The way your team evolved by absorbing DNA from enemies kept the gameplay fresh and strategic. Its vibrant world, bizarre creatures, and tactical approach are still vivid in my memory. Evolva wasn't just a game—it was a bold vision of what the future of gaming could look like at the turn of the millennium.

One of those games that could really use a remaster. I replayed it so many times, I couldn't count, graphics wise its plaine but there is something alien about it. You can cheese some of the enemies, tho' the later stages get harder. Mutating new skills is a unique system, as it not only lets you discover weapons, if you delay it, you get stronger options later, so you can solo play most of the game, then have the buffed team at the end.

If anything, I wish there were more levels, because the last stage gives you the last weapon and then there is no gameplay to try and test your ultimate Genohunters, buffed or not. My childhood memories.

One grey afternoon me and my friend the evil Ifrit walked in the snow engaging in an intellectual conversation about the surreal quality of Y2K 3D graphics.

The Ifrit was ruminating on how the glossy colorful futuristic optimism of early 3D art gave way to [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM_57bxOJw4] dreamy box-like low-poly cityscapes of GTA 3[/url], indicating a promise of the future never to be fulfilled.

I, on the other hand, said that for me far more important were simplistic and vast acid-painted spaces covered in colorful haze that carry a certain sense of surreal primordiality not unlike that of dinosaur encyclopedias. Games that came to my mind as illustrations of the idea were [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY0NtZxqtio&t] Sacrifice[/url], [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84ytI9LfMaw] THINK TANKS[/url] and “There was this game, I can’t find it now, you play as four alien humanoids somewhat reminiscent of the [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/38450/MDK/]MDK[/url] character, it’s in third person, you switch between them, they run around this exact kind of acidic expanse and grow weapons out of their arms”. Bear with me, I played it when I was eight, and only for 40 minutes or so because it was too weird for me.

“Oi, you mean, this game?” smiled the Ifrit producing [i]Evolva[/i] out of his pants.

And so my fate was sealed. Futuristic trans/post/in-human anti-alien Greenpeace simulator, here I come!

So, the premise is you are two trans/post/in-men and two trans/post/in-women (at least, I should think they’re trans/post/in-women, judging by width of their pelvis and the direction of their femurs) with jellied eels for a gene pool waging ecological warfare against a tentacled version of a baobab from Saint-Exupéry’s “Little prince” before it grinds a planet under your protection into infected space dust. One could ask, how this parasite’s actions are unnatural and where we draw the line of keeping nature in check, and if a life-form's natural means of reproduction is parasitizing on a biosphere of a heavenly body, why deny it and who are we to judge it… But I guess a Steam review is the wrong place for such deliberations so I’m going to chalk it down to “In the grim darkness of the far future people are still as freaked out over Ichneumonidae as Darwin was”.

One should think a 2000 squad game with AI controlled characters is going to be a nightmarish dozen-hour variation on your typical escort mission. No. Absolutely nothing of a kind. I was surprised how well the pathfinding works and how responsive squadmates were to my commands. It’s no [i]SWAT 4[/i], but rarely did I find my companions stuck or dying because of their stupidity.

I was expecting a derivative third-person shooter, but the developers really tried to get what they could out of the squad system: some levels force split your team making you look for ways to unite it for the final assault and in one mission you have to leave at least half the squad behind to guard a spot while you’re off looking for a way to progress.

The game was made for PC exclusively (it was the age just before consoles claimed everything), and it shows: movement speed is high, aiming is manual (no crosshair, just tracers), and enemies are numerous, tough, frequently attack you from multiple directions and come with artillery and gunfire support from vantage points. I also encountered something one rarely sees in shooters at all: soft-forcing the player out of a comfortable position with either covering it in environmental hazards or bringing out support enemies to bathe it in suppressive fire. Impressive. Played the game on medium difficulty and my characters still died consistently.

Levels are vast and foggy and gave me the above-mentioned feeling of primoridality enhanced by bestial grunts of my hooved and spiky protagonists and the drum/synth dominated soundtrack – all punctuating the impression of me being a warrior from the future come back down to Cretaceous to fight a war nobody will ever hear about.

What’s bad?

[*]Well, for all its quality, it’s still a regular third-person shooter, no revelations.
[*]Levels are glorified corridors, occasionally with multiple identical routes.
[*]Puzzles revolve around good old key hunt (although half the time keys are explosives, but… you know…). Nothing wrong with good old key hunt, but unimaginative.
[*]The famous evolution of weapons and abilities is little more than a theme, it works more or less like any stat progression in an action game, and is mostly just incremental, there are no real trade-offs.
[*]Besides, many weapons come into play so late you never get to use them (two of them arrive at the penultimate level).
[*]Interaction between indigenous and parasitic life-forms is negligible (read: they fight). A bit of extra chaos in the form of a rudimentary [i]Rainworld[/i]-style ecosystem could, I believe propel this game’s status to legendary. Unfortunately, that would obviously take a ton of development time, and the game was already in the works for two years, and for a game at the turn of the millennium two years in the oven equals six years today, double that for those pushing for tech, which [i]Computer Artworks[/i] did.
[*]Ironically while you’re supposed to be fighting in order to preserve local wildlife, you’re also mechanically incentivized to butcher all the life you meet. You know… For [strike]experience[/strike] evolution! I’m going to resist the temptation of perceiving it as a satirical jab at environmentalists and shall interpret it as the mythical maxim along the lines of “to kill a dragon one must become a dragon” or whatever. Suits the overall visceral tone of the game better.

A fine game, few like it. [i]Spore[/i]. [i]Eternal Cylinder[/i]. [i]Giants: Citizen Kabuto[/i]. [i]Cargo! Quest for Gravity[/i]. Possibly, [i]No Man’s Sky[/i] to some extent – aesthetically that is. [i]MDK[/i], I guess, although I never played it... [i]Impossible Creatures[/i]?

Worth trying – especially if you long for those fragrant alien winds.

Evolva is a classic that I obsess over. if you don't know how good this game could of been, its a shame. for it has a great concept with evolving and mixing dna to form and reform your warriors.. To this day I still think fondly of it. like a forgotten but often remembered lover. this gem is one I deeply encourage developers to take on and make for a modern audience. maybe not so much the same but with the core combat and story there there's a lot of leeway for tributes to classics like this.

Ok with that all out of the way. I wanna say... If you really consider it in all forms, This game was one of the first rogue like games back in the 2000s if you count absorbing DNA as exp, Mutating as getting power ups or weapons, Exploring different worlds with swarms of the variations of enemy types, and friendly enemies that you can slay for other power ups..

In all forms if the term Roguelike existed back then, it would definitely be something of a experiment of one..
but even still the bigger joy if you dig those things.. and comparisons

幼儿园的时候就玩了，当时玩的是盗版，并且我现在才知道这盗版还是个第四关的demo。我一直重复玩，就奇怪怎么都无法到达下一关，最后连地图有什么bug都知道了。
现在终于补完了正版，并且也通关了。我依旧觉得这款游戏是真的很惊艳，2000年的游戏，游戏关卡设计是真的出彩，与之相比的战斗玩法和寻路指引也是让我没话说，除了难度很高以外（普通难度我就已经觉得很难了）完全有重置或者出第二部的潜力，可惜20年过去了它依然是部冷门的游戏，我非常的希望有《Evolva》的精神续作。

One of the best games of its time.
The core concept is just fantastic. Being able to mutate your squad to get different roles, and solving the different puzzles through each levels was so much fun.
The game's definitely aged now, but its atmosphere overall remains fantastic. If you're a fan of retro gaming, and dark-ish atmospheres, I highly recommend playing this game.

Evolva has such a great concept, a team of mutable warriors fighting against the hordes of parasites, evolving as they find new enemies and take their powers onto themselves. This game is tough, make no mistake, it takes skill, planning, keen vision and a good bit of trial and error to break the later levels.

You'll find yourself cursing the position of the numeric keys in your keyboard as you switch quickly from mutation to mutation in order to survive the encounters, it reminds me of pro Deus Ex multiplayer players, who switch augmentations at breakneck pace.

Your A.I teammates don't help much, having very poor targeting if you don't help them along, makes it all much more difficult but if you are skilled enough, your favorite genohunter may be all you need to break the parasites.

Despite these shortcomings, this game is fantastic and I seriously hope for someone to remake it, perhaps with coop control of genohunters and a more modern A.I that doesn't get too stuck.

Evolva fue lanzado en el año 2000, como primer juego de Computer Artworks, creadores también del magnífico [i]The Thing[/i], que desgraciadamente no tenemos disponible por el momento en Steam.

Fue un juego realmente innovador en su día, a continuación os contamos los motivos:

[h1]Argumento:[/h1]

Manejamos a un grupo de 4 mutantes llamados "genocazadores". Son la culminación de décadas de investigación genética. Estos seres pueden adaptarse y mutar en cuestión de segundos adquiriendo el ADN de sus presas, cambiando su aspecto y características. Cada combate victorioso hará que nuestros genocazadores mejoren sus capacidades.

De inicio, cada uno de los genocazadores tiene sus características propias: Uno de ellos es muy ágil, indicado para inspeccionar el terreno enemigo, esquivar los ataques, saltar barrancos y obstáculos; otro tremendamente veloz, quizás más débil que sus compañeros, pero con una rapidez que le permite explorar los distintos territorios e descubriendo donde se encuentran los enemigos y objetivos. También pueden usarse como señuelo para atraer al enemigo a un lugar concreto y así poder atacar con el resto. El tercer tipo de geno es el más fuerte, pero también el más lento y el más expuesto en los ataques cuerpo a cuerpo. Por último, el cuarto tipo: el más inteligente. Es una mezcla entre el geno ágil y el veloz, además de tener una gran puntería. Quizás es el más completo, aunque esto dependerá en parte de las habilidades que demos a cada uno en las mutaciones, que decidiremos nosotros en todo momento.

Nuestro equipo de genocazadores ha sido enviado a un planeta que está infectado por un parásito, tal y como vemos en el vídeo de introducción. Este parásito ha liberado a miles de criaturas de diferentes tipos para protegerlo, cada una también con distintas habilidades: algunas escupen fuego, otras se hacen invisibles, otras disparan proyectiles, etc. Nuestra misión es acabar con todos para llegar hasta el origen de todo y destruir al parásito. Una vez vayamos matando a nuestros enemigos, iremos adquiriendo sus habilidades por medio de las mutaciones, para hacer a nuestros guerreros cada vez más fuertes y completos.

[h1]Jugabilidad:[/h1]

El control reacciona realmente bien, manejado con teclado y ratón es una delicia. Una vez nos hacemos con los controles (configurables totalmente a nuestro gusto) es muy sencillo controlar a los genocazadores, pudiendo separaros, dejarlos controlando una zona, agruparlos y dar órdenes directas a cada uno de ellos. En todo momento veremos por unas pequeñas pantallas qué están haciendo y donde se encuentran los demás.

La mayoría del tiempo el juego se basa en ir acabando con todo bicho viviente para ir mejorando a nuestros personajes a base de mutaciones, teniendo como objetivos destruir algunas estructuras creadas por el parásito. A veces dan ganas de arrasar con todo, incluidos con la propia fauna de ese planeta, que aunque no sean nuestros enemigos nos ayudarán a conseguir más mejoras para nuestro equipo. Hay niveles en los que iremos todo el tiempo con nuestros 4 personajes a la par pudiendo hacer uso de todas sus capacidades al mismo tiempo o bien niveles en los que los separan cada uno en una punta del mapa teniendo que hacer su camino por separado hasta conseguir reunirse, cada uno con sus objetivos. Hay algunos pequeños puzles que dotan al juego de más variedad para que no sea todo mata-mata, aunque son sencillos y se basan más que nada en la exploración y conseguir ciertas llaves y artefactos para destruir objetivos.

La IA es uno de los puntos fuertes del juego, algo pocas veces visto en esa época. Veremos como nuestros enemigos atacan desde las alturas, saltan, se agrupan, huyen si se ven en desventaja... también la IA de nuestros compañeros es espectacular cuando no están siendo controlados por nosotros. Podemos decirles que se reunan con nosotros estando en la otra punta del mapa o que nos sigan por caminos estrechos y veremos como van perfectamente sin caerse y saltan a donde nos encontremos casi con total precisión (a veces fallan, pero eso también lo dota de más realismo).

Nuestros genocazadores puden morir, teniendo que terminar la misión aunque sea con uno de ellos. Si sobrevivimos, en la siguiente misión tendremos de nuevo disponibles a nuestros 4 personajes.

[h1]Gráficos:[/h1]

En su salida fue uno de esos juegos con los que probar las gráficas más potentes de la época. Un juego lleno de efectos y colorido, con posibilidad de aumentar o disminuir la distancia de representación o cambiar el bump mapping a nuestro antojo pulsando una tecla, con unos escenarios inmensos para lo que había en esa época, un diseño artístico súper original y único, con una fluidez y suavidad pocas veces vista antes.

Sin duda espectacular en este apartado, al igual que el diseño de los personajes y enemigos, tan original o más que los escenarios. Si bien hay que reconocer que no ha envejecido muy bien en algunos aspectos, como que la distancia de representación quizás se quede algo corta hoy día aun estando en la máxima posible o el diseño de los genocazadores algo simple sobre todo en su fase menos evolucionada.

El juego no dispone de voces, tan solo leeremos los textos (por defecto en inglés, pero con la guía que os indico arriba podéis traducirlo al español) que nos indicarán el objetivo de la misión y nada más. El sonido en general y sobre todo la banda sonora es otro de los puntos fuertes del juego, con sonidos muy conseguidos y variados de los seres que habitan los territorios que visitaremos, acompañados de temas muy buenos y acordes al ritmo de juego, aunque quizás se quedan algo cortos y llega un punto que la música se hace algo repetitiva.

Un gran juego que no llegué a terminar en su día y que por fin he podido disfrutar después de tantos años. Concepto súper original y un portento gráfico en el año 2000. Muy disfrutable también hoy día.

Duración: Me ha llevado unas 12 horas completar los 12 territorios disponibles, aunque todo depende de vuestra habilidad y de como gestionéis el control de vuestros genocazadores. A mi me ha tocado tirar mucho de quickload y ensayo error, es un juego bastante difícil.

BELLISIMO!!!!! MAGESTUOSO!!!! FANTASTICO!!!! no tengo palabras para describir lo que ha sido terminar este juego. Ya que fue una experiencia realmente gratificante. Porque no estoy acostumbrado a esta clase de juegos por ser de estrategia. Es increible como con las limitaciones de la epoca y del estudio lograran crear un hermoso mundo alienigena con el mejor apartado artistico de enemigos y niveles. Es una delicia a cada instante a pesar de sus escasos poligonos. Y que considero mucho mejor que otro juego de "estrategia" muy aclamado que es Sacrifice. Ya que este e diferencia del anterior podes manejar por separado a cada mutante y usar tanto armas a distancia como cuerpo a cuerpo. Algo que no pasaba con sacrifice porque no susabas nada mas que algun poder cada tanto mientras que el trabajo sucio lo hacian tus tropas. Y vos muy comodo. Este mismo juego me lo compre hace 10 años pero me aburrio al poco tiempo porque me parecio muy dificil. Ahora quise darle otra oportunidad y me siento muy contento de haberlo terminado.

La historia me parecio espectacular. Transucurre en el futuro muy muy lejano donde los humanos han avanzado tanto con la tecnologia que son capaces de manipular a su antojo la ingenieria genetica. Hasta tal punto de crear seres autonomos que se adaptan a cualquier medio ambiente. Tu mision es aniquilar a un mega parasito alienigena que toma como huesped a un planeta con fauna salvaje para reproducirse y alimentar su ejercito de parasistos para consumirlo y asi esparcir su infeccion por toda la galaxia. Una premisa muy simple pero muy, muy original. Sin necesidad de recurrir a grandes producciones y guiones. Lo mas loco es que siendo un juego del año 2000, donde los videojuegos empezaban a tener cada vez mas narrativa, este juego lo unico que tiene son las descripciones de cada mision antes de empezar. Y ya con eso te atrapa. Porque las describe de forma muy interesante. Porque en ningun momento hay personajes que hablan.

La jugabilidad me parecio muy original para lo que eran los juegos de esa epoca. Manejas a 4 muntantes que tenes que matar a otras especies para que al absorver sus retos mejores las habilidades. Que es fundamental para pasarlo. Hay que tener mucho ojo porque tiene tientes de rpg. Cuando ni bien la barra de mutacion se llene a medida que vallas matando a los enemigos, y algun que otro ser autoctono tenes que acceder al mutador para elegir las habilidades. Por cada "arma" que quieras mejorar seras penalizado con otra o con alguna abilidad que se reducira. Elegi las que mejor se adapten a tu estilo de juego.
habra momentos en que tendras que usar un mutante a la vez. Tambien esta la opcion de atacar todos juntos. Pero como es un juego de estrategia podes tanto ordernarles atacar o ir alternando. Lo que si que tenes que cuidar muy bien de ellos porque sin alguno se muere no podes hacer que regresen a la vida hasta que termine el nivel. Y sera cada vez mas dificil terminarlo. Es una jugabilidad en lo personal muy sofisticada para el año que fue creado.

El apartado artistico me parecio bellisimo. Un diseño de niveles sumamente original con un diseño casi surrealista. Con colores de todas las tonalidades que se van mezclando. En lo personal le han sacado muy buen provecho porque son practicamente mundos abiertos. Pero lo que mas me ha fascinado es el muy amplio lore, su refinado y exquisito diseño de enemigos. Por como estan diseñados a pesar de tener pocos poligosnos. Y por tener un diseño tambien cuasi surrealista. Hay para todos los gustos. Y como si eso fuera poco tambien es igual de sofisticado el diseño del HUD. Y del menu de inicio. Un trabajo realmente espectacular.

El sonido me ha parecio tambien espectacular. Como cualquier juego de aquella epoca, no es de extrañar que su banda sonora sea tecno con aura oscura. Estan muy bien diseñados el sonido de los efectos, con sus limitaciones. Tambien me ha llamado la atencion porque los sonidos de las armas parecen como si fuesen hechas mecanicamente pero son de extraterrestres con diferentes tipos de ataque como lanzar explosivos o fuego pero de su propia anatomia. Y las de los mutantes mutaciones que van adquiriendo. Pero lo que mas me ha llamado la atencion es que no hay ningun personaje hablando. Solo se escuchan los alaridos de los muntantes jugables y de los alienigenas enemigos en los enfrentamientos. Es como ver aquella pelicula de 1981 que era de hombres de las cabernas protegiendo el fuego que era un recurso escaso y muy codiciado y que ninguno se expresaba con dialogos sino con balbuceos y gritos. Asi es este juego. Sin personajes que hablen para generar dialogos forzados. Obvio que estos juegos existen desde mucho antes pero siento como si desentonaran muchisimo entre tantos otros de la epoca donde los dialogos ya empezaban a ser muy profundos.

Sin palabras. Estoy muy contento de haber terminado este juego ya que es viejo y me encantan. TOTALMENTE RECOMENDABLE!!!!!

Lo recomiendo si te gustan los juegos retro, es un juego de exploración con múltiples criaturas en un mundo infestado, posee la mecánica de mesclar las características al acabar con los enemigos por medio de mutaciones que incrementaran las posibilidades de cumplir de forma eficaz cada misión, hay que avanzar con cuidado gestionando las cualidades de cada uno de las criaturas que componen el grupo de cuatro, donde podremos ver en todo momento como interactúan, las misiones son variadas, y hay que ingeniarse para lograr cumplir los objetivos, tiene un sistema de radar simple, pero de todas formas hay que aprenderse los recorridos para encontrar lo necesario para avanzar.

the landscape graphics pretty much suck but - hey this is old school and the game-play is fun up to a point - the mutations are very minor most of the time. I'm not sure the smart one is any smarter than the other three characters but - played this 20 years ago and still get a kick out of it

Madre mia, este es un clásico inmortal. Resulta divertido y variado incluso hoy en día. Lo único negativo que se me ocurre es que las teclas para seleccionar los poderes están distribuídas de una manera incómoda, pero esto se puede solucionar cambiando los controles al gusto.
Recomiendo este juego porque, sin ser ningún AAA, puede hacerte pasar las tardes.

A great 20 year old game that was fire back in the early 2000s. I can definitely recommend it as the graphics, ambient sound and gameplay are really good for such an old game.
All the known bugs such as: stuttering and freezing can be fixed easily. Playing around with the game's configuration turns the game into a smooth experience.
Even the Multiplayer PVP seems to run pretty well, as I was playing it with my brother a few days ago.

Comleted this game 3 times back in its day. It was ahead of its time both in graphics and gameplay. Great concept.
It has dated in graphics only. Could have improved controls but the gameplay and concept is still awesome. Would love to see a Enhanced Edition or better still a Re-make. Stick with it because it gets even better once you advance your characters.

Для тех, кто не знает, что из себя представляет Эволва: в вашем распоряжении есть четыре генохантера, обладающие способностью поглащать чужие гены из трупов и посредством мутации приобретать новые способности. Чем дальше, тем большее разнообразие врагов будет встречаться, но и тем больше способностей будет в распоряжении генохантеров.

Главное, что нужно знать, чтобы понять, как играть (это вызывает самые большие проблемы у новичков):

[*]Переключаться между генохантерами можно на F1-F4
[*]Обычно лучше бегать одним генохантером, оставив остальных на месте, так как они плохо избегают получения урона. Для этого есть команды: следовать всем, следовать ближайшим и распустить (смотрите управление).
[*]Есть возможность послать в указанную точку любого генохантера (нажать Q для вызова прицела и нажать F1-F4, чтобы отправить туда нужного генохантера).
[*]Экран мутации открывается на M, по нажатию кнопки "Мутировать" игроку предлагается два случайных варианта мутации из доступных генов. Если результат не устраивает, можно попробовать мутировать снова, либо отменить мутацию закрыв экран на крестик.
[*]Есть усиленная атака на Shift. Она требует зарядки, но наносит огромный урон.

В общем-то, это всё, что нужно знать, чтобы начать играть.

Чтобы поставить широкоформатное разрешение, нужно залесть в реестры: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Computer Artworks\Evolva\1.0
И в параметрах DisplayModeWidth и DisplayModeHeight выставить желаемую ширину и высоту, соответственно. Интерфейс, конечно, растянется, но это практически не заметно.

Ещё можно улучшить детализацию моделей в отдалении. Для этого качаем [url=https://www.moddb.com/games/evolva/downloads/evolva-lod-modification]мод[/url] и из папки LOD_high в архиве копируем файлы в папку игры: Evolva\Resources\Informs. Это заменит упрощённые модели на те, что с максимальной детализацией.

Впервые увидел трейлер к этой игре еще на пиратском диске MDK2.
Впечатлила возможность ускоренной эволюции/мутации отряда. Можно сказать, это дальний родственник DarkSpore. Даже странно, что такую игровую механику никто больше не пытался развивать
Графика для 2000 года так же выглядит очень даже хорошо за счет технологии bumpmapping,можно на лету одной кнопкой подогнать конфигурацию для своей машины. Мелочь, а приятно)

Купил эту игру только чтобы отдать ей дань уважения. По-моему это первая игра в какую я поиграл. И дело было в далеком 2000 году. Для того времени это была просто офигенная игра. Думаю настоло время настольгии, думаю настало время пройти ее еще раз спустя 18 лет.
