I have been looking for a VR space sim that scratches that itch, and Elite comes very close. While the game can feel grindy at times, there really is nothing else like it. It has a steep learning curve, but if you're willing to put in the time to learn, it unlocks a literal galaxy of opportunity for you. There are gameplay loops for many different playstyles, and you have the option to play offline if you don't want to interact with other players. If you're also looking for a space sim, definitely don't pass up Elite. It's worth it.

I'm not sure what to say about the game. I put quite a few hours into it. The fact that the galaxy is basically a near 1:1 representation of our own galaxy is pretty breathtaking, though also so frighteningly large (and empty) that it's not much of a selling point. You can certainly explore it and make money doing so, but it's not for me.

Playing it with a good VR headset and trying to master the flight controls is probably the most immersive gaming I've ever done. The sound design, as many people say, is world class and the gold standard in gaming.

Ultimately, I feel empty playing the game, as it would be better suited to a single server MMO style, similar to Eve Online. The Milky Way galaxy is a pretty big place to have so many playing in single-player mode.

The grinds for things like upgrading your engineers and collecting mats are pretty out-of-this-world, but I did it nonetheless - all so I could outfit a Vulture to kill a few NPCs in asteroid belts faster.

The "ARX" (their premium currency) is full-on wallet-theft levels of predatory design. Virtually impossible to earn just by playing, and deliberately setup in value amounts such that you cannot buy the thing you want unless you buy x2 bundles (as is typical of most all premium currency trash game mechanics). The custom livery skins and bobble-heads and crap you buy with this "ARX" is also massively overpriced. You're lucky to get a single skin you want for $10.

The positives though: to this day I still find myself wishing to come back to this game, and I occasionally do from time to time. It's an amazing space sim, and the ability to seamlessly transition from warp flight, to normal space flight, to atmospheric flight, and then land on a planet and deploy a rover is really special. Take that to the next level by purchasing Odyssey and it has potential to be much more (I never bought Odyssey DLC, but it seems like it *could* rival Star Citizen if ever fully realized or fleshed out).

The game is old, but it really doesn't look, sound, or feel it. If the designer would focus less on shoving garbage skins down the player's throat, open it up to a more MMO style design, and more fully realize "space-legs" *and* spaceship flight (like walking around inside your ship), it would be close to the ambition that Star Citizen has been vaporware promising for more than a decade.

At the time of this writing, the game is on sale for $6. That is a steal for a game of this level, even playable without DLC, but... it will only take you so far.

If you like playing a mostly solo galaxy simulator or space trucking sim or enjoy very long grinds, I'll give it a recommendation.

It's a dad game. There is plenty of action to keep you on your toes with ground and space combat as well as ship and inventory management. At it's core, though, it is a simulation and not a game. So don't expect much in the way of a story. The game has recently come out of a rather long slump in content so now is a great time to pick it up.

I have been playing since Release (2014) and was one of the first bakers.
Recently I switched to Linux and got instantly banned (for possible client manipulation) from the game with a message from the Devs, that I have to buy a new Copy of the Game...
Thats a real bummer... and got me real pissed. I invested a lot of time and real money in the game.

There is ultimate freedom to do whatever you want: mine asteroids, take on bounties, upgrade your ship, join a squad, transport cargo, investigate anomalies, play the markets, commit crime, discover planets, colonise worlds, align to a political faction, expand your faction’s territory, contribute to community goals, fight other players.

The actual gameplay however is very slow, methodical, realistic and chill. This might not be what people expect given the many different things you can do. Because of the vastness of the universe your tasks take time and won’t always be action packed. There is also zero forward momentum – you must set your own goals and strive to achieve whatever sounds interesting.

The best way to get into is to complete some missions, buy a decent combat ship and start upgrading it for a sense of progression. From there you will feel capable of travelling further, taking on riskier contracts, joining a squad and trying out other parts of the game. There is also a lot to learn – do not skip the tutorial, and have your phone to hand to constantly look up mechanics.

The game optimization is really great, there’s no stuttering or lag at all (you can check my specs). At first, I felt confused because I skipped the tutorial.

The gameplay itself is completely free-roam with no specific storyline, so it’s more about personal goals. Honestly, that can feel a bit boring at times. However, the longer I played, the more addictive it became (the galaxy is basically unlimited, lol).

It would be even better if the developers added a more story-oriented element. That would make the exploration feel much more engaging.

Como jugador de EVE Online (+4000h) , X4-Foundation y otros juegos similares, recomiendo este pero sabiendo ciertas cosas:

1. - Es recomendable comprarse el odysey, es decir, el dlc, aunque no vayas a aterrizar en planetas ni hacer combate en tierra, simplemente por la comodidad y la expansión de cosas que podrás hacer
2. - El juego aunque sea un MMO, no hace falta jugarlo online, puedes activar el modo solitario y jugarlo tu solo (pero aun así necesitas internet, pero no te encontrarás con nadie)
3. - Lo que haces afecta a los demas jugadores, ya sea comerciar, eliminar NPCs, etc. No se nota a simple vista, pero lo haces.
4.- El juego es altamente recomendado jugarlo o con mando o con joystick + acelerador + panel (a lo star citizen) por lo que voy a decir a continuación.
5.- El juego tiene muchisimos controles, muchos son tediosos, muchos no te lo explican, no te explican como funciona el peso en tu nave, recomiendo lo que dije en el punto 4 principalmente porque es más dificil de jugar de lo que parece, las naves no se mueven como si fuera un battlefield, son muy dificiles de mover, y muy dificiles de usar, por eso recomiendo el punto 4, porque con el mano se te será más facil mover la nave, y con el joystick más aún. Además de decir que con el mando te faltan teclas para todo lo que tienes que hacer en la nave.
6.- El juego es extremadamente lento, tenerlo en cuenta. Si os destruyen la nave, no la perdeis, pagais el seguro y la recuperais (pero si perdeis la carga)
7.- Tema de optimización, va bien, incluso con mi PC que podeis ver abajo, va bien en el espacio, donde más le cuesta es en estaciones (dentro de los bares) o en planetas con mucha fauna

Want to go somewhere? Sit and wait five minutes.
Want to land at your destination? Spend another 20 minutes trying to work out how to get within 30km then sit and wait another five minutes.

Want to dock at a station? Better learn how to metagame the fast travel or you'll never get there.

Interstellar space craft with no autopilot. No 'leave orbit and reach destination'. No accurate 'fly to destination'. It's deliberately obnoxious game design wrapped in tedious travel time.

What's the space combat like? I have no idea, I've spent all my time trying to get to stations.
What's the mining like? I have no idea and I'll never know.
What's the ground combat like? Repetitive, dull and set in unattractive copy-paste locations.

It's just a terrible game. Badly designed, badly implemented and miserably lacking in any respect for the players' time. Definitely one to avoid.

The game looks good, has good graphics and good gameplay, you can see all kinds of spectacular images with gorgeous landscapes. What it lacks is a better Antialiasing but with a Reshade it can be solved. What it still needs from my point of view is more development on exploration, for example - on the planets there should be various fallen meteorites that you can look for and then you can mine them with the SRV, then what they could add on the planets would be Stalagmites with different sizes, Crystals, Mineral Columns and more diversity on Exobiology. What it still needs is the interior of the Ships, to be able to walk freely in the ship without teleporting directly on board.

In term of hours and game play I haven't even scratched the surface but I can at least do a "does it run review". Once your Graphics card or the semblance of one is scanned and the game does it's thing, after a few hours of playing the loading is pretty quick and the game runs okay if 30 to 40 fps in a good station or system and can go all the ways too 10 to 15 in bad stations and system but that is fairly rare. If you are okay with "good" graphics mine are at the optimized "high" graphics setting and it doesn't look bad at all with these specs I even got a few good looking screenshots. Now there is a big BUT here because the game when running with this level of Graphics card it can "corrupt" visually which looks bad but I have yet too have an instance of this that makes the game run bad (drop in frames) or crashes the game, to me at least its seems to be purely visual where the hud in the ships (any and all ships) "bugs" visually but all functions work it's just annoying and the only way the end this is too exit the desktop.

TLDR: Game fairly well optimized runs between 20 and 40 FPS(generally), does look okay with these specs, does "corrupt" visually but does not hinder function of the game in any way (when I have gotten them, I do need to exit to desktop to fix)

You launch the game and you immediately have to start looking on internet to understand why graphics are terrible. Ultra simple tutorial, and then you are left alone. Used to have 10k+ hours on an old account.
Got back into it recently and it's still the best game of it's kind. Star citizen has nice tech but Elite is better put together as a game.

The exploration is fantastic and the game is beautiful (Could use a shader update though). The gameplay is well thought out, though I think they should rethink some of the new mechanics (eg. Atmospheric entry) and make them a bit more involved.

After years of being away from the void it's nice to chuck some tunes on and go bounty hunting again!

46 hours in and not even at the starting line yet.

Got in, got out of the starter zone a couple of times, found out I had messed up and had to throw 20 hours of playtime away.
It feels like for the first 200 hours I will be doing it a lot, its a steep learning curve. But that is no different that the previous versions of the game.

Havent tried controlling with joystick yet, but joypad was much easier to fly with than keyboard and mouse. And I seem to recall on an older Elite game joystick was the way to go.

I've just [b]heavily[/b] dunked on the Odyssey DLC.
Which deserves it.
And I'm far, [i]far[/i] from being the only one dunking on how shoddily it had been made.
I thought how is it [i]possible[/i] that it had been made by the same team that had made Elite Dangerous?
Meanwhile, I've come to see there's a quite simple reason: it hadn't.

And I remembered that, for balance, I [i]should[/i] give a thumbs-up to the base game, while I'm at it. It's a legendary game, for a reason. If you haven't tried it, do so.

A fair warning, though. As you play it, the UI will constantly remind you that there's other areas and mechanics available only if you buy the Odyssey DLC. Well, I'd say don't. It [i]does[/i] all look great on paper, mind you. It's the implementation that you want to be steering clear of.

This is what you expect from an exploration simulation sim you explore you go on quest you get money and upgrade your ship. The multiplayer crew is a lil bit buggy at times it doesnt work at all. But the main purpose of this game is the feel of vastness the galaxy has to offer though sometimes I wish certain areas wouldnt take me 30 minutes hyper jump as it was a pain to go back and forth from there.

I LOVE this game. I'm a huge fan of immersive simulations, and this scratches that itch for me in spades. I recommend it to everyone I know who loves complicated games, especially those I've known who enjoy flight sims and mech pilot games...

I've developed a very simple test to see if this game is worth someone's time. Ready? It's one question:

"Given the time, money, and freedom, would you find it fun to teach yourself how to fly an actual real-life fighter jet in zero-G with almost zero proper tutelage, while people actively shoot at you, scream slurs at you, and reference centuries of history you have no way of learning other than reading for literally 100+ hours?"

If you answer "no", then this game isn't for you.

If you answer "yes", then you would enjoy this game...and--this is unrelated--you should REALLY call your therapist and tell them to up their rates. :| lmfao

Spent 70 hrs working and getting a new ship. Got a new ship and went out on a mission. Died and now im back to square one because my ship just gets deleted if i try to pick a different ship. I cant even recover it. What a waste of time. Not only do u just lose all ur progress but the controls are alot to manage. You need to spend at least a week just figuring out controls and even then you have no clue whats happening. Theres no tutorial. This game needs a major QOL overhaul.

Elite Dangerous is a complex game that works to give you an immense amount of control around a fully scaled universe. The game itself is mildly directionless, and not in a bad way! Exploration, trading, conquesting, combat, piracy, all exist in their own bubbles in this game, and each is integrated into the original flow of the game effectively.

It would be more enjoyable in VR or with extra peripherals to enhance the experience of piloting a ship, and the systems, while explained briefly leave much to be desired in the way of figuring out the way it all works.

This game also has a heavy demand on your computer due to the beauty and insane scale of the environment you are placed in.

I'd recommend, with the caveat that it has a steep learning curve, difficult on keyboard controls, and unless you build your own fun out of it, you will struggle to play the game for a long period of time.

A monumental gaming project.
With over two decades of gaming experience, I can say that the game may not seem particularly outstanding in terms of space mechanics. BUT (!) - it has its own philosophy and its own spirit, and that cannot be taken away from it.

Let’s be honest - there is no perfect space game in the industry, and I have played all of them as a fan of space and scientific exploration.
To create something that could truly satisfy our minds, spoiled by abundance and accessibility, one would have to combine all existing space games into one. But of course, that is a utopia.

I came to this game last. For many years it remained on my “wishlist shelf.” I was waiting for the right inspiration - and it finally came.

That is why this game, which has its own soul, will resonate with those who are capable of slow contemplation and of experiencing themselves within the vast ontological abyss of space.

For me, space is not just an image - it is a philosophy. And this game has something to offer.

You can just start this game and try to figure out everything on your own, like I did, but I really would not recoment this. If you were looking for a sim not an arcade congrats, you are right. Otherwise there will be a rude awakening. This is one of those game you have to invest a bit of time before acually beeing able to enjoy it. It is basically everything you ever wanted to do as a child. Nobody is telling you what to do. You can fly stuff, drive stuff, explore stuff, tool stuff and pew pew stuff. It`s like an enourmous playgorund and even has pvp in case you miss your bullies

Have played this off and on since it originally launch. It's a good game and I enjoy it but it is losing it's luster. I have a much more powerful PC than when I first placed it and I just feel like it should perform MUCH better than it does now. I hope they update it to run better and take advantage of modern technology. That being said I do still enjoy it.

i tried to play and enjoy this game but lets get real it clearly isn't new player friendly at all, its a complete boring trodge of a chore to play, menu systems are awful and control terribly, controls are just terrible in general anyway and getting started with this game is like being thrown into a pool of feces with no life jacket, if your looking at this game right now on sale i promise you don't bother, play eve online or star citizen, this wont hit your sci fi dopamine receptor, it will make you want to commit sui and think about the packet of crisps you could have bought with the money instead, actual legitimate 0/10.

I really enjoy this game but I think there is some baffling design choices pertaining to the guides and the galaxy map.

Anytime I want to do a new activity that I haven't tried yet the guides will be like a paragraph or two sentences but fail to properly explain what I am supposed to do. Like recently I wanted to get into powerplay but it forces you to do these weekly assignments to onboard with your pledge which in itself is annoying but one of the tasks was to sell Rare items to acquisition systems, I filter by rare items in the commodities market, fly over and sell and nothing happens. Turns out, it's only a rare item if it has a star next to its name. Why if I filter by rare does it just pull up random items then if they don't fit the filter? There are just better guides on google than in the game itself.

Then anytime I want a new ship or hardpoint it becomes a annoying scavenger hunt because the galaxy map doesn't let you search for vendors that have it in stock, certain items just spawn in certain economies but that doesn't garuntee that that station or that system stocks the item YOU are looking for, the only way to search is to use third party websites that don't even have accurate information. It's just so needless and frustrating and just wastes my time, I'll spend like 20 minutes flying to some station in deep space that Inara says stocks cannon modules just to find out it actually doesn't.

Tried playing it and right from the start, hated it. The ship flying mechanics suck so bad, I couldn't fly the ship in any decent manner. Gave up. If this is the best it gets, I've thoroughly wasted my money. Uninstalled it after 4.6 hours of gameplay. Way too complicated for casual gaming. Don't invest your time or money unless you plan on making this a part-time job. Not worth it

best chair commander game ever you really get to be a part of the best open galaxy, politicly active, MMO game available on the market. i had 500 hours in it on epic games and i bought it on steam just for the easy VR support and i will put 500 more in and then a little more after that. o7

Only just starting to understand the game ,but I love it.
The open, expansive world of Elite Dangerous is absolutely amazing. The ability to mine, or trade, or seek out bounties, or explore is all up to you. Yes theres a learning curve, but isn't that the fun of a game that has longevity.
This will be a game I will be playing for many a year. I can wholly recommend it. Just a shame that I have only just now got around to getting involved. Long live ED.

Not a game for everyone because it is slow paced with a massive learning curve. I've left and returned to this game for closing in on 1400 hours over the last 10-ish years, so I think I love it. It's gorgeous, and to anyone at all interested in space/astrophysics, this is a "Milky Way simulator" and I adore it for that. Of course, you can get into combat, trade, pirating, but the exploration aspect is what never gets old for me.
