Storyline

Fun but flawed. Fans of Into the Breach will find a rather hilarious 10 hours in here but it doesn't have legs.

The root of this is "too many teams, not enough to distinguish between them."

So, each playable character has one 'perk' that can be leveled up. If you cut the number of teams in half (10 down from 19), gave every character two perks, and made them all half as expensive, I'm almost certain it's just a better game and one where a much higher number of players want to go the full distance.

Had a great time with it, but I think it will continue to be an obscure find for people googling "like Into the Breach."

A quirky, delightful alternative sports game that focuses heavily on planning, perfect information and managing limited resources, Dungeon Deathball is the kind of indie gem that is liable to fly under the radar of many people.

The gist of it is, with a team of two characters, survive several rounds of a brutal underground sport that consists of reaching the right size of the field while surviving monsters and hazards .

The ball is both an asset and a resource: it can be used to attack and to improve your score (reaching the goal line carrying it scores a Touchdown), so knowing when to throw it (as an attack) or passing it (to hand it off to the teammate) is an important consideration.

In several respects, it has similar strengths to Into the Breach (and that is very high praise), since you can manipulate the play field by pushing enemies into each other, for example, or be forced out of the way.

Player characters have different classes with unique leanings and abilities, and making the most out of your chosen duo is the key to victory (players do die if hit by a monster or hazard, so managing limited actions and stamina is needed to make sure your characters survive).

After each round of Dungeon Deathball you get to spend earned gold to improve characters (again, a similarity to ItB).
Finally, it is loaded to the brim with pixel art charm and many modes of play and unlockables, so it might just scratch that bite sized tactical itch.
