Is this a fun game? I would say it’s a 5/10 in terms of fun. Is it entertaining? I believe it’s very entertaining. Is it a bit glitchy and annoying? 100%, I didn’t even get into that here.
Is it a bit on the nose with social commentary? Absolutely, though this isn’t a bad thing. This game’s strongest aspect is that it can be interpreted in so many ways. You can examine how it views religion, sexuality, class warfare, race, or anything else you can imagine. Diaries of Space Janitor is a canvas upon which you can place so many ideas and theories. It’s cryptic and confusing, which invites a bounty of interpretations.
I think this is where the fun of the game lies; you can see whatever you want to see in that maze of a spaceport.

Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor is called an "anti-adventure" game because you don't engage in a great quest, with grand gameplay nor even an epic story. You are what the game tells you, a janitor, and most of the time will be spent cleaning trash and watching everyone on the city go on with their lives.
You get paid for trash you burn, or you can even sell valuables found to the stores spread throughout town, and your so called 'anti-adventure' is the fact that you need to lift yourself of a curse by gathering the god's fetishes or doing favors to some specific NPCs.
The main draw of the game is the cute aesthetic and catchy soundtrack, and social commentary is sprinkled here and there but I think such things are best experienced by playing the game first-hand.
If you are interested in playing it, do so and ignore the rest of this text, if not, there's still some things I wanna talk about but if you're not gonna play it anyway there's no reason not to spoil it.
Your janitor, while going on and about for its quest, will come across expensive weapons and armors being sold on stores, but your meager salary will never make you be able to afford one, because even when you work a lot you also need to use this money mostly to keep you alive with food and medicine and that felt like a gut punch to the little blue janitor(and ourselves).
The only stat in the game, LUCK, can be accrued by praying to the gods and burning candles in their altars. But what does it change? Well, I don't know and I think nobody really does. It's as sketchy as this is in real life and a reminder to all the hopes we ever cling to when we see our dreams and aspirations.
Near the end of the game you will need the help on an adventurer to lift your curse; however, they are the doing the big quests, not you, and the ending, one of the best I've ever seen, conceptually speaking, is the final blow to her idealism: as much as the character wants to, epic adventures with glory and fame were never meant for her.

nways truly good game but apparently last time i played it was in 2019 when i had less room in my computer and uninstalled, i'm so sorry spaceport janitor goddddd i gotta play this again some day, i don't even think i made it to the end credits! esp since i might've been apart of the Beta!(like that's why i'm marking this as recieved 4 free because i never remember buyng this+ i'm pretty sure i wasn't old enough to buy stuff by myself on steam when i got this in like 2015???? i do not remember but i can say i gotz history with this game as one of my first steam ones and i will always <333 it 4 that)

It's an interesting idea with a nice start, but after the first hour, it quickly overstays its welcome and becomes an RNG grindfest.

It starts off very disorienting as the area is too big and maze-like to warrant having no map. Once you get into the flow of things, you will slowly be harassed by an invisible hunger bar, invisible gender bar, invisible goddess favor, guys with red scarves that like to randomly eat large sums of your money, and an invisible stamina bar (your incinerator energy goes down with both time AND usage, so you're punished for not using it, and you're punished for using it too much).
In the meantime, there is very little for you to do other than follow quests that like to suddenly make you aware of important items that just moments ago you had already incinerated or sold. Don't worry, you can find them again... given enough days and RNG dice rolls. You can't "lose", but you can certainly waste hours of your time making zero progress. I don't know, apparently that's supposed to be different.
Most of the game feels pointless to play, which on one hand feels like it's making a fair point about being poor with mental health problems in real life. On the other hand, though, it makes that point badly and unrealistically with purple skin and alien nonsense. It doesn't work. In this game, among all of my other problems, the only real reason I'm poor is because some guy just took 3/4ths of all of my cash, not because my job doesn't pay me enough or society is keeping me down. It's really just that one guy keeping me down.
You CAN amass money fairly easily as long as you don't buy expensive food, don't incinerate useful items, and do your job as a janitor well. You can't die from sickness, so you don't have to spend money to treat it. So... you should have money. You just don't because strangers with guns keep walking up and eating it.
In essence, every part of the game has been made as frustrating to deal with as possible, but without making any of it exciting or interesting, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. Yeah, the resulting game kind of sucks, but did you ever imagine all the nothing you could be doing as a spaceport janitor? Picking up trash, having your backpack incinerator run out of energy, and then just walking around being kind-of-hungry with nothing to do?
I don't think you should buy this, even on sale. Most of the fun is in the visuals and dialogue, while the game itself is very repetitive, so I would recommend simply watching someone else play this.

I feel I've sunk an embarrassing amount of time into this game for not even getting close to beating 2 of the 3 objectives to reach the ending, but every time I get swept up in it again I am once again transported. Something about the sights and sounds of the spaceport just sweep me up in the endless, nail-biting grind of partially automated luxury(?) trans space capitalism and I emerge having memories not of playing the game but of living it.
There are many reviews for this game and all of them seem to struggle with adequately explaining it or making a convincing argument about what it all means. This is understandable because nothing in the game really means anything. There's no such point like "obtain the chalice of resolution!"; it's not that simple. Spaceport Janitor is, largely, a representation of life and, in that regard, it's what you make of it.
You take on the role of a service industry employee, charged with maintaining the grounds of the spaceport in which they live. While there is a small degree of UBI, your pay is semi-performance based. However, even if you work from dawn till dusk and exhaust the capacity of your tools at the highest speed, you will struggle to even pay for your food in this largely hyper-capitalist airport city. Needing to resort to eating chalk or what you find on the ground, your money is further stretched by having some degree of gender dysphoria and being routinely shaken down by the cops.
The world-building is surprisingly thought-out. There's the surface-level items like a pantheon of gods to pray and light incense to (who are all aspects of specific concepts and events). There's the mid-level items, like the city being both culturally consistent and distinct with its architecture, inhabitants, festivals and superstitions. The music is also generally enjoyable, but with this kind of under-layer of being just slightly off or dysfunctional, the same way that the city itself seems exhibit those traits. But there's also another layer that you can't really get until you spend time really analysing items.
For instance: You are Alaensee, and it seems like though various item descriptions that the Alaensee are stereotypically grand warriors fighting the monsters of the universe, richly rewarded for doing so. Therefore, you are a complete anomaly for being the very antithesis of your people and not wanting to have anything to do with that. There's a number of subtle storytelling fragments that are well considered and, I'm sure, overlooked by the majority of players who just wonder why you keep getting cussed out for being a janitor -- which is pretty representative of the custodial trade.
Objectively, the game is about the fact that you get cursed and are passively working on a way to get uncursed, but subjectively the game is about surviving in what is a generally inhospitable, self-interested society and seeing what general fortunes or misfortunes can be had each day. It's worth it for the vibe and general experience, especially on sale. And while some of the achievements sure are annoying, it's a doable 25 hours to perfect if that's the kind of thing that interests you.
My recommendation is positive.

In “Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor” erleben wir das Glück und dürfen…Müll aufsammeln. Als leicht versklavte Reinigungsfachkraft laufen wir jeden Tag über das Areal des Weltraumhafens und sammeln alle Arten von Abfällen auf. Das meiste davon dürfte in in unserem mobilen Verbrennungsofen landen, jedoch können wir auch Gegenstände finden, die wir aufheben oder verkaufen können. Allerdings müssen wir dafür auch erst einen der unzähligen Händler finden, der uns die Ware abnimmt. In 99% der Fälle lohnt sich dies aber ohnehin kaum. Die Items haben bis auf Nahrungsmittel oder Glück keine Funktion, auch wenn man zuerst anderes vermuten kann. Jeden Tag müssen wir etwas essen, bevor wir schlafen gehen können. Dabei ist es wichtig, auch Dinge zu verzehren, die uns nicht krank machen. Sonst kotzt sich der Charakter die Seele aus dem Leib und man überlegt sich, ob man das auf der Straße gefundene Gehirn wirklich essen hätte sollen…?
Wie erwähnt, ist Glück ein wichtiger Faktor. Dieses Attribut lässt sich durch viele Kleinigkeiten wie beten oder Opfergaben verbessern. Reich werden wir allerdings trotzdem nicht. Ziel ist das Erledigen von den Aufgaben, die aber wirklich wenige sind. Und hier kommen wir zum Problem mit “Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor”. Die Aufgaben sind ziemlich langatmig und bestehen logischerweise daraus, bestimmte Objekte zu bekommen. Kurz nach dem Anfang muss man beispielsweise drei Gegenstände finden. Die ersten beiden hatte ich nach einer Stunde und war neu im Spiel. Für den dritten Gegenstand habe ich dann vier Stunden gebraucht und konnte dafür nur Händler abklappern und hoffen, die richtigen Gegenstände, die ich für den anderen Gegenstand eintauschen muss, zufällig auf der Straße zu finden. Am Ende hat das dann übrigens gebuggt und mein Spielstand war damit Schrott…
Das Spiel macht einfach verdammt wenig aus seinem tollen Setting und alle Fährten, die man möglicherweise verfolgt, also Erzählungen oder interessante Orte, sind alles nur dummes Gerede. Klar gibt es 1-2 Spielmechaniken zum Testen, aber alles zum Auflockern dieser Routine exisitiert halt nicht wirklich. Ich verstehe zwar, wo die Entwickler damit hin wollten, aber das macht das Spiel einfach zu repetetiv. Einen Absturz hatte ich übrigens auch.

Unser Hausmeister will eigentlich nur auf den Heimatplaneten zurückkehren, aber dafür braucht es Geld. Und unser Hausmeisterjob bringt da wirklich nicht gerade viel ein. Obendrauf bekommen wir am Anfang des Spiels auch noch einen Fluch ab und müssen den loswerden. Letzteres macht übrigens definitiv den größten Teil des Spiels aus. Ansonsten ist es natürlich etwas amüsant, wie arm wir sind. Selbst normales Streetfood können wir uns nahezu nie leisten und von medizinischer Versorgung können wir nur träumen. Es gibt Essen und Items (die uns allerdings nie etwas bringen), die tausende und zehntausende Credits kosten. Wenn wir selber aber so etwas finden und verkaufen wollen, bekommen wir aber vielleicht nur 1% dieses Geldes. Das macht das Spiel zu einer ganz witzigen Kapitalismuskritik, aber baut das nicht weiter aus.

Um nochmal auf diese Irreführungen einzugehen, die ich meinte: Ein Charakter erzählt uns beispielsweise dass am Ende des Flusses möglicherweise etwas Wertvolles zu finden ist. “Cool”, denke ich mir und lauf am Fluss entlang. Selbst ein Gegenstand, der einfach ein paar Credits mehr wert wäre, würde mir ja helfen. Allerdings stellt sich dann heraus, dass der Fluss im Kreis läuft. Und okay, ich musste an dieser Stelle lachen. Aber alle diese Geschichten sind leider wirklich nur Geschichten.

Das Spiel hat eine sehr bunte und pixlige Grafik, die vielleicht nicht jedem gefällt. Ein paar Animationen mehr hätten es sein können, aber sonst kann ich nicht meckern. Der Soundtrack ist nichts Besonderes, aber auch nicht schlecht.

Unser Charakter kann als Bedürfnis ja sogar das Geschlecht wechseln. Dafür gehen wir an einen Automaten und können wertvolle Credits bezahlen, damit er/sie sich besser fühlt. Aber dann gib der Figur doch auch ein anderes Aussehen, wenn man schon sowas machen kann.

„Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor“ hat eine lustige Idee und hat mir zumindest ein paar Schmunzler geschenkt. Allerdings ist es einfach sehr wiederholend im Gameplay und wird damit relativ schnell langweilig, da alle Spielmechaniken selber einfach langweilig sind. Selbst wenn man daran arbeitet, sein Glück zu verbessern, bleibt vieles eben…Glückssache. Die ersten 1-2 Stunden fand ich durchaus unterhaltsam, aber dann wurde es schon auch sehr öde. Der Bug, der meinen Fortschritt komplett verhindert, war dabei auch nicht gerade hilfreich. Ich habe das Spiel als Beiwerk im Paket bekommen. Nach dem Anspielen hätte ich es mir aber definitiv auch nicht so gekauft.
Ich bin statt Reinigung eher im Reviewbereich unterwegs. Das sieht man einmal meiner Wohnung, aber auch meiner Steamgruppe an. Не собирайте контейнеры (они стоят ноль копеек и вроде как с каким-то маленьким шансом торговец может дать ДЕНЬгу, но то ли я его не понял, то ли перевёл не так, но торговец говорит что-то вроде: за контейнеры, получишь подарок.
Не хватает русского языка, русификатор по сути дело такое, но как по мне в раза 4х стало бы играть приятней (с русским языком в игре и с картой, на которой бы показывалось НПС)

[h3]The Hopes Of A Janitor Escaping The Grind[/h3]
Finally come around to playing this after learning it works on the [i]SteamDeck[/i] and I really like it. Hoping a grand adventure will whisk the player from the daily janitorial grind yet be punished is dour yet bold and creative. Make no mistake, this game is a grind based on luck and item drops. Scraping by early on for scraps and fencing the goods at a good enough price heighten that tone of financial insecurity. Learning where to sell or points of interest can be confusing as the map loops or cycles into itself heightening that disorientation. Not to forget the gender dysphoria of protagonist that cost medication heightens the daily struggle although not sure if the dysphoria is meaningful here or just quirky. Ending each day with a diary entry is surprisingly meaningful here as the only real player expression in a vibrant world that treats the protagonist as an invisible minority. Seeing items at exorbitant prices and wondrous effects that can never be bought and even if just to be incinerated shows how far the adventuring world is.
As for issues, sometimes the game hangs after a cutscene specially after I finish the game which can be annoying. While I do get the grind, the objectives are expensive or luck that make it less fun or intriguing to play. The most players can do is increase luck over time and pray the get the items they need where an alternate method of acquiring these items might be also better such as side quests or knowledge tricks. (Learning that certain days increase an item drop is not good enough but still helps.) The reason saving money is risky are the red scarves which takes a huge chunk (percent-based) and just erase days of work. They can and must be avoided but I don't know if they pop in out of nowhere and tags me which feels unfair. I can see how this would make people quit unnecessarily even if I get why. Lastly, why inspecting something defaults to dropping it which just annoys me.
The ending might be not what players would like to hear but I feel has those small moments of joy and daily festivities to counterbalance it. The aesthetic and specially the soundtrack is definitely one my new favorites specially the festival music. Would recommend for its vibes and experience.
I'm trying to review games that I've finished playing; this one's difficult, because the last time I was seriously playing it was seven years ago. I remember loving the genders, as a just-out trans girl; I remember loving the deities and the bustling life of the spaceport, as a slut for material culture worldbuilding. I was too young and offline to really grasp the social context of Gamergate that inspired it, but as a post-college, underemployed trans woman, I certainly can appreciate a game that uses a fun, repetitive little task grind to get people to inhabit the life of an exploited sanitation worker.
There are a lot of things I wish [i]Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor[/i] did more or better, but it says its piece and leaves, and I'm happy with that.

A game both calming and anxious; cozy and uncomfortable; bright and depressing, at the same time. As the name tells, you play as a janitor, lowest of the low, barely making the meets end, in a huge, busy city of adventure and celebration -- which you don't get to partake in. Instead, you collect the garbage after the adventurers, hoping to find something worthwile among the refuse, then find someone to sell it to and maybe afford your lunch and gender medicine. All while a cursed skull yells at you. Yep, it's a bright busy world of adventure, and you're a queer disabled garbage collector in it. Highly recommended both for its bizzarre surreal atmosphere, and down-to-earth gameplay.
This game got me through a really stressful period in my life, and I'm forever thankful for that. Thank you, screaming skull that never stops following me around.

this is one of my favorite games ever made and after revisiting it years later, i can confirm it still is. the npcs are hilarious, the items are perfectly designed, the mechanics work exactly how you think they do and offer many ways for the game to be played. every play-through shows me items i’ve never seen before and new approaches that i never thought of. i’ve been fans of the developers (who have since joined kitfox games) for a long time because you can feel the massive amount of heart and soul they put into every project. buy this game now, don’t wait til it’s on sale. if you can, buy it for double the price.

beautifully crafted world and routine that lulls you into a comfortable rhythm of caring for your basic necessities all the while practicing the art of learning what to hold on to and when to let go. The inclusion of gender dysphoria and how it affects your character and your ability to function and exist in the game is such a beautiful addition and insight for individuals who may not have experienced dysphoria before and is an affirming and validating piece that those who have can relate to and hold close. I love that you can easily and often lose yourself in the maze of the various sectors of the world. There's always new corners to explore or pieces to uncover. It's something that can be put down for some time and revisited as though no time has passed.
They Might Be Giants once asked the question "Should you worry when the skull head is in front of you, or is it worse because it's always waiting where your eyes don't go?" While Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor sidesteps the question, it does definitively state that the skull head in front of you isn't nearly as frightening as being stuck in a dead end job in capitalist hellscape.
Absolutely play this, I had no idea this was 10 years old until looking for wikis. It's pretty short but a tad confusing as there is no in game map and the city is pretty big and maze like. But it's still simple enough with a great art style. 9/10 cozy game
Game is fun in theory. The color pallet hurts my eyes and camera makes me motion sick.
5/10 and an 8/10.
The game is an immersive sim. The immersion comes in the form of an alien-world that the player must learn and navigate to get rid of a curse and eventually "leave the planet" as that is the main character's dream.
The game's main gameplay loop comes down to:

Find garbage-
optimize items for incineration-
Find enough food to sustain yourself while buying the food as cheap as possible (or get food for free)-
Go home when it's too late because you can't work when you are too tired/out of energy

The game does a great job of exploring the concepts of a society that outright does *not* put value to a lowly worker, but fails to provide a fun gameplay loop.
Play this game if you like chilling to good music and watching youtube videos in the background so you can stay somewhat awake while playing.
Avoid this game if you don't like games where you're literally doing a job for a game.

Vida en los desperdicios de un sistema que se sostiene a base de exceso y desigualdad. Si en algo destaca es que el loop de juego es muy simple pero a través de detalles en las mecánicas explora sus temáticas de manera muy elegante: la anti-épica de no poder salir a hacer quests por tener que ir a laburar, la suerte como moneda de cambio, que la enfermedad o disforia puedan saltar en cualquier momento frustrando nuestros planes para el día, que la milicia que aterroriza al pueblo cumpla las funciones de la policía. Entre muchos, muchos otros detalles. Tirando al final por ahí se pone tedioso pero, de nuevo, genera una alienación que refuerza lo que quiere hacernos sentir, así que queda en cada uno si es un fallo o no. Hasta donde sé, el mejor planteo a nivel de mecanicas del anticapitalismo en un juego
extremely evocative
Unpleasant music full of dysonants, some gender ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for no apparent reason, dungeon crawling on a space port, religion and godesses that do nothing, unexplained luck system, resrictive saves system, poor manual, weird game idea in general.
Zero controller support despite the launcher that lets you set up controller bindings. You can use steam input to assign keyboard presses to controller but it breaks the ability to write in-game diary entries and it's a required mechanic to be able to save your progress, meaning you're going to waste a one full day before you find out, ask me how I know.
No issues on Linux.
This is my favorite video game of all time. The most realistic poverty / minimum wage grind simulator I have ever experienced. Made me cry a lot (in a good way)
I liked this game for the first hour or two of playing, but as it dragged on it the really boring and repetitive gameplay loop killed off my enthuasism.
In the beginning I liked exploring the spaceport but you soon learn that most of your interactions with it are mostly meaningless. You can talk to people but the vast majority of them aren't important and its just fluff. You can browse the shop stalls but predominantly most of the items are worthless or are too expensive anyway.
The core gameplay loop of collecting and incinerating rubbish becomes insanely repetitive. You get some story tasks which involves finding certain items but you're options are, excluding a couple, just hoping you find them amongst the litter on the ground or somehow saving up enough money to buy them. But saving up money is really hard in this game with frequently having to buy food or switch gender for some reason. Theres also a thing about luck where you can increase or decrease your luck but it never seemed to have much bearing on the game.
Maybe the repetitive struggle is supposed to be a part of the games message, but all I know is I got to the end of this game and felt like it wasnt worth it. I regretted not dropping it a couple of hours in when I first started to get weary of this game. I honestly couldnt think of type of person I could recommend this one to. Probably better to just avoid it.
This is one of my favorite indies. Cozy, depressing, funny, a chore, all at once. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, especially all the weird street vendors, the festival music, the vibrant colors, all the random junk you can find... Really cool experience.

I am sure that if you are the target audience, you will love this game. There is supposed to be a good message in here, but the gameplay loop was SO BORING that I couldn't stick it out long enough to get much into it. Perhaps I am just misunderstanding the gameplay loop (burn as much trash as possible except stuff NPCs consistently find helpful and stuff you can offer at shrines?), but the game as I understood it was a boring, monotonous grind. I agree with some other reviews that a better tutorial or early-stage gameplay guidance would likely have helped with this.
If you can like a game for the message it has, even if the gameplay is dull, you'll like this. Otherwise, I hate to say it, don't bother with this title.

Excruciatingly boring, even for a walking simulator.
This is super interesting game, experimental in an approachable way. It might not be for everyone, but it is worth a short while to see how it makes you feel. If it clicks, it clicks hard.
Given how much is stuffed and thought provoking in its short-time, this is highly recommended!

I feel like this game is *this* close to being good.
Maybe it needs a better tutorial or something because as is it feels like
90% praying to RNGsus and 10% bugs.
Wish the sewerdungeon was a bigger part of it as well.
I love cozy games, I love weird, mysterious, niche games. So I thought this game would be for me.
Unfortunately, the gameplay loop is not fun and just feels like a chore. Not only that, after deciding to commit to it, I got stopped by a game breaking bug which stops me from finishing the game.
This game could've been something really cool. I love the idea, I love the visual style. But it doesn't make up for the bad sides of this game enough.

Not a whole lotta game in this game. The basic gameplay loop is too repetitive to find enjoyment in and the graphics and world just don't have enough wonder to keep me interested. There are some aspects of mystery but trying to solve them takes forever and ultimately isn't worth the time.
There is something about playing this game alone in the middle of the night, It really did feel enchanting. I'm not sure why I even like the game, all I did was pick up trash and look up things I didn't understand. This game is so obscure I don't even remember how this game ended up in my library. But I liked it a lot, one of the most unique 100%'s I've done so far. You can get all the achievements the normal way, but the STEAM guide by MAXIMILIO explained it fairly well and it feels super cool to do.
If you're looking for a unique 100% to your collection, and/or interested in a relaxed experience this is the game for you. And that damned OST, I loved the song "Days Feel Long Now".
I totally get why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I think the game is really charming, enjoyable, and well made. It's lighthearted and silly, with streaks of intrigue and social commentary through it.
I know a lot of people talked about getting lost (which I certainly did more than once), but I honestly picked up the layout really quickly, and there's actually a map in the game manual if you're super stuck.
You can play it at your own pace, speedrunning through, or take your time and learning the city.
TLDR: Cool in my book :)
I need to get back into this game. Last I played it, I felt like I was on a trip of certain acidity's so to speak and it was something. It's one of those games that is just... something. I definitely like it, but it is a Marmite sort of experience where you will either love it, or hate it... is what I'd normally say but this game is so weird that you may dislike it to begin with, but then fall for it.
I have absolutely no bloody idea what I just said but yeah, it's fun! I also think I got it on sale for literal peanuts (something like £2) so it's certainly a neat experience. And it looks really nice as well. :D

this is a crushing rendition of poverty, yet it still manages to be charming and joyful all the way through. it's a really lovely game. this is the kind of game that makes you viscerally feel the character's position and experience, and feels so palpable to anyone who has ever been poor. it beautifully evokes the constant anxiety, hopelessness, and hectic confusion of poverty overwhelming the player with the busy spaceport, all the while also capturing the color and excitement of a dense city. you scrounge and hoard trash never fully understanding the every changing rules, constantly feel cheated, you have to spend money on food and hormones as fast as you can make it, and progress is unbearably slow. it is so recognizable, despite the completely absurd and alien setting.
as for how the game looks, you probably love it or hate it. i think it is gorgeous. there are so many times i stopped despite my very limited time just to look around. the sound is swings between overstimulating and calming. there are a bunch of wonderful, fully realized views. the game runs very poorly, and it does not have an eye for detail. in many ways, it feels like the game is fighting for it's life just as much as you are. it's wonderful.
You're a trash panda (against your will) stuck on a spaceport makings ends meet by burning trash. Also, you get cursed after trying to go dungeon-hopping and be all gung-ho. Said curse comes in the form of a human skull that goes "BWAH!" at you every now and then as well as drains your luck. Yes, there's a luck index. It's one of the primary mechanics of the game which changes according to whether you keep/incinerate certain kinds of trash, pray to any of the local deities, drop any candles or fetishes, or eat certain foods. Your luck affects your chances of credits being eaten by Redscarves as well as what drops you get from the Lottoshrines (among other things). The main 'quest' in the game is to find a way to break the curse and silence the "BWAH!" skull once and for all. You have to meet different characters, fulfill certain tasks and obtain certain things before you're able to get the tablet that's needed to make the skull go away.
There's five main areas in the spaceport to explore - Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, and Purple. Each area has its own unique features waiting for you to uncover. My official description of the areas are as follows: Red - [spoiler]armour and weapons[/spoiler], Blue - [spoiler]bank and dungeon[/spoiler], Yellow - [spoiler]where you live[/spoiler], Green - [spoiler]merchants just about anything[/spoiler], Purple - [spoiler] magic and spellwatches[/spoiler]. Side note: you can actually sell some of the trash you pick up from the ground to the corresponding merchants who have them for sale, though the value is probably much lesser than what they're being sold for. There's also 9 deities in the game world which you can pray to and offer candles to increase luck (cause why not).
This game's graphics surprised me when I first played it before I got it on Steam. The style is 3D but also not? It can certainly give you a mild headache at first but that should go away after 2 hours of playing. I personally enjoyed the funky and colourful spaceport with its myriad of aliens, lore, nooks and crannies. Theday was my favourite day because of the really pleasant celebration music which varies here and there across the spaceport.
Overall, this game is kinda an anti-RPG because you don't get to embark on any big adventures in the spaceport even though there's items such as treasure maps, dungeon keys, weird crystals, etc. The point of the game is the exact opposite - you wake up everyday, incinerate trash all over the spaceport, learn a little bit about the world (as the player), earn enough credits, buy some dinner before you go to bed, rinse and repeat. Still, it's pretty charming and I return to it from time to time when I feel like getting some peace and quiet. 8.8/10
If it's for you, it's for you. If it's not, it's really, really not. This wasn't for me, the message missed me entirely from the get go.
I understood there was supposed to be a message and what that message vaguely meant but it couldn't keep my interest long enough to get me to buy in.
Gameplay at first was jarring and interesting, especially when it originally shifts perspective for the first time. Now I didn't play long enough to see if it did this again but my money is on it doesn't. The gameplay loop after that was being a janitor, cleaning up after others, or sometimes yourself, deciding on what's worth keeping and what needs to just be incinerated. It has a huge emphasis on "superstition" and "karma" which is a big reason I dropped it.
Ultimately, this seems to be a game about self identity and society not recognizing it. Atleast that's what I took from it, but I added a extra layer with it's "luck" system that just took me out of the whole idea because it didn't seem to match the message. But maybe that's the point, idk.
I don't recommend it because I'm not in it's target audience and I don't have anyone who is that I'm close with. But if you are, don't let my review sway you away cause reading the other reviews from people it touched seem to be very happy with their experience.
It's a grind game, its not too fun tbh, feels like a chore sometimes. The art and music is superb, honestly the best qualities of the game, since the gameplay is repetitive and kind of depressing. The ending is a disappointment.
Play it to burn time, or to enjoy Festival day (the 2 songs got stuck to my head for a week lmao). It has performance issues and feels incomplete. 6/10
