Come back. Descent 3 is good now!!!
This game has taken a heavy hit to its reputation since its poor compatibility with modern systems . HOWEVER the source code for this has recently been released, so we finally got a proper source port for this gem.
With PiccuEngine, Descent 3 runs like a charm on modern systems. Support for resolutions up to 4k, no more mouse issues, customizable FOV and an overall mighty fine smoothness.
Getting Piccu to work is super easy. Just drag and drop a couple of files and rename two others.

The game itself is a great evolution from the heavy mazes of its prequels. This time around, navigating the levels is much more intuitive, since you get discernable level layouts and landmarks. There is a lot to like in Descent 3 in 2025. Banger 6DOF game!

Some dated graphics and inconsistencies with modern hardware. But my nostalgia does have me revisiting this interesting and alien entry to the series.

The general sense of momentum and weight of the vehicles are nice. The assortment of weapons a blast to fire.

Though the bots can really get on your nerves on the mid-high difficulties, especially if you play without a mouse for more refined aiming.

The soundtrack features a series of unique arrangements by Jerry Berlongieri that have fed into my imagination since my early years interacting with this game; and I still frequent listening to it outside of play sessions.

Missions are more nuanced this time around compared to the predecessors. The guidebot, automap, communication-log, and on-board computer functions will come in handy if you get lost on what to do or where to go. Levels are quite extensive, but you can probably rush through them if you know what you're doing.

The Github release of the Piccue Engine leaves some hope that this game will see more activity, preserved and patched by a dedicated community in time. I've been giving it a go for my latest play-through; and so far, it's alright, dunno if I'd recommend Piccu in it's current state, some audio oddities and UI bugs to be had; but nice that the game seems to render to streaming apps.

I'd recommend snagging this on a sale if/when it does drop the price. While there's no stock-life system, it can test your patience from time to time.

Unplayable on modern computers. Tried fix after fix after fix. A couple of times was able to actually get it started through to the main menu. Then encountered further issues: mouse would not move, froze on menu. Endless (unsuccessful) troubleshooting. Finally gave up.

This was an excellent game back during its day, but this port is in shambles. The Linux/MacOS bug that corrupts your save file is still there, and on switching to Proton, I got even more flagrant errors which dropped me to the desktop before I even reached the main menu.

This is a beefy machine which I also use for video editing, so unless an RTX 30 on a 4.0 GHz Ryzen 7 with 32 GB of high-speed RAM sounds light to you, it definitely isn't a hardware thing. If you buy, then buy informed.

Descent 3, un jeu qui a su apporter une nouvelle dimension à la trilogie tant appréciée. Malgré les réactions mitigées des fans, j'ai personnellement été conquis par cette expérience immersive et captivante.

Le jeu nous plonge dans un univers futuriste et oppressant, où nous incarnons un pilote intrépide naviguant à travers des environnements hostiles et dangereux. Les graphismes époustouflants et la bande sonore envoûtante contribuent à créer une atmosphère unique, nous transportant littéralement aux confins de l'espace.

Mais ce qui m'a vraiment enchanté dans Descent 3, c'est la diversité des missions et des défis à relever. Chaque niveau est une nouvelle aventure, avec ses propres enjeux et son lot de surprises. La jouabilité fluide et intuitive permet une immersion totale, nous permettant de vivre pleinement l'action et l'adrénaline qui en découlent.

Malgré les critiques, il reste pour moi une véritable pépite vidéoludique. Ce jeu m'a procuré des heures de plaisir et d'excitation, me laissant des souvenirs mémorables que je chérirai toujours. Si vous êtes en quête d'une expérience de jeu unique et inoubliable, je ne peux que vous recommander de plonger dans l'univers fascinant de Descent 3.

The game itself is fine, however, this is a beta test and we are supposed to email any bugs we encounter etc. Each time you try to load a game to continue your progress, it kicks you out. You can start a new game and play all day if you want, but you are unable to load your saved progress at all. Months with no responses from anyone on the topic.

AND THEN, I found that you must set sound to "Your Card" or "Primary Setting" . It works! On my 2014 ROG mega laptop anyways.

In the year 2000 it was one of the few games playable in 3D mode.

Hardware:
ASUS V3800 32 MB VGA + ASUS VR-100 shutter glases + CRT monitor with 120Hz interlaced mode support.

Unfortunately it was possible to play only first 3 levels in 3D mode, then the game flew out.
Assume the developers didn't test the game completely. There were small possibility that many people could play in 3D mode in those times, I think.

What a disappointment. I had so much hope after 1 let me relive my nostalgia to a satisfying conclusion and 2 ended on a tough cliffhanger after a rough experience. But after about a hundred mostly-unsuccessful attempts to start this, I'm not sure what else to do.

About half the people from online help forums say they can't get this game working, no matter what they do. The other half say the game works fine, no problems, just as long as you do five things ... and those five things are different for everyone. I spent hours trying everything I could find, from changing setup settings to trying patches to entering command lines to disabling my background themes. Doing so got me from error messages every time to simply crashing.

The frustrating thing is that the game doesn't crash roughly 1 in every 10 times I start it ... but then it crashes opening the first level, or crashes exiting the map, or crashes changing a setting. I managed to play the training mission and that raised my hopes, and I've played partway through the first level several times but then it crashes somewhere and all progress is lost. And I've heard that many people experience crashes again on exiting levels. I guess playing this might work if I saved literally every minute?

Descent 1 and 2 worked off the shelf with the help of DOSBox, but this game is a nightmare to run. Whether it works or not just seems completely random, and that doesn't help when testing things to make it work.

Doubly disappointing is the fact that what I've seen of the game so far looks good. Sure, the experience is different. They might have rewritten the code from scratch when the company broke up because the ship feels completely different to fly. It's not bad, but it's different. And the map isn't just a mess of lines, and the headlamp doesn't eat through energy, and the guide bot can attach to your ship, and the ship goes "outside" now ... There's just so many interesting and good changes, so I don't mind a small difference in feel.

Also they're doing a story now! There's a movie where the pilot learns the warp core malfunction was indeed caused by the shady corp, so now he wants to get his money and a little revenge. That's all I needed!

Overall, if I could get this to work, I think I would recommend it. If I ever get it to not crash 9 out of 10 times rather than 1 out of 10, I might change my review to a positive. Who knows, maybe this game will work fine for you and you'll have a good time. But I just can't recommend something that doesn't work.

Was hoping to play on Mac OS, but unfortunately looks like its got the same corrupted save file issue that the Linux port has. Game runs perfectly, but if you try to load up any of your saves, the game instantly crashes and it is therefor impossible to continue progress in the campaign. Luckily I have windows available to me and it seems to be running fairly smoothly on there, but I would say for Linux and Mac OS, the game is unplayable and Steam needs to remove these ports until they are fixed. Probably a very easy fix!

All of that aside, the game is incredible and just a fun as I remember! 10/10 for game.

Ran into the save-files issue, so I tried to get this running on my Windows 10 machine. Audio-bugs galore and the aiming on both Joystick and Mouse feels like dogwater. Wait until someone reverse-engineers the game and releases a patch that consistently works. InjectD3 and DXwnd are supposed to help, but they don't make things playable for me on Windows 10. Oh, and it crashes, _a lot_.

Update: after playing through both Retribution and Mercenary, this game is hot garbage and didn't sell well for a reason. The final boss-fight in Mercenary is garbage, but the levels are decent. Retribution is just a steaming pile of ♥♥♥♥ and not worth your time. I will likely never play this game again it is so bad. Descent 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games and it's so frustrating see how how bad this game is.

Skip this, just play Descent 1 + 2.

the new mac and linux versions by icculus are great though as they require very little

update: with the source code releasing setting the game up on windows (and in fact anything with a loaf of bread for graphics lmao) will probably be easy as 1-2-3

Games for early Windowses aged the worst out of all PC games in regards to making them run on modern systems: DOS games and earlier are easily emulated with DOSBox and whatnot, and newer games tend to account better for constantly progressing hardware and software environments. What I want to say is, expect to jump a few hurdles while making the game run with acceptable video, audio and control setups. Throughout the play, it crashed on me maybe two times and the final cutscene did not play for me

While the previous two installments are practically 6DOF Doom clones, whats with all the tight corridors and quite repetitive levels and objectives, this game is great because it's [i]trippy[/i]. Every level is huge, sprawling, unique and tries so hard to showcase its colorful lighting and procedural texture effects that each time it's a journey. Despite the scale and complexity of the levels, it is very hard to actually get lost, because levels have distinct landmarks, and you have 3D map and a very immersive direction arrow in form of the GuideBot. And while I think thereminvox should have stayed in fifties, the soundtrack is great.

Also includes the Mercenary addon with 7 huuuge levels

Excellent followup and evolution fo the first 2 games. Far better graphics wise. Though I wish they'd optimize it a bit more for ultra-widescreeen gamers. It has a satisfying conclusion for once for a trilogy. They expanded and wrapped up the story started by the first game in a satisfying way. This one also finally included some story cutscenes instead of just showing escapes and traveling.

Easily the worst in the series. For completionists only. The controls aren't as fluid, the openness makes everything quite tedious (don't forget to get the log at the beginning of lvl 10 otherwise you have to go all the way back through the entire level just to pick it up and then go all the way back to the end of the level just to put it in a place and then win the level - 15 minutes of your life gone forever), whilst the high-manoeuvrability of the bots is quite frustrating.

The animation and the graphics are better, so it's not all bad. But yeah, stick with 1 and 2. When I was younger I was surprised they didn't make a 4, but now that I'm older and wiser I know. It's because 3 sucks.

The store page said nothing about this being a beta ... hmmmmm

There certainly [b][u]is[/u][/b] a [url=https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6543]bug[/url] and it's known (since April 2020) and serious - if you play a level for more than a few minutes, your save games get corrupted and crash the game when re-loaded.

On the Steam support page, all three website links return 404 (actually all redirected to the same page at interplay.com) and the support email bounces. I've subscribed to the bug report at bugzilla, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Seriously, Steam, how can you sell a game in this state?

Can't change the x,y axis settings so that up goes up and down goes down. This backwards stuff doesn't work for me. What a complete waste.

Edit Sept 2025: I played this game back in the day when it came out and really enjoyed it then. I just remember being able to fly better. Maybe I had a joystick back then. I'll give this game another try someday.

Hi guys,I loved this game when I was younger. Lots of drunken LAN parties with Descent 3 and Need for Speed Porsche. Anyway, I just put it back on my computer with Steam. Got all of my audio taunts and ship logos in the new game now. It even recognizes my PS3 controller. But from what I am hearing there are no games on a multiplayer server on steam ?? Thats where all the fun is. Guess we have to go to another games server to play multi player.

The latest update for Linux means that the game works very well, though a few tweaks are required for general gameplay (as others have observed).
I had to disable the joystick option as it seemed to cause some strange keyboard drift when activated. The mouse sensitivity was way too low as well, so I adjusted that to 2.0.
Finally, the game supports my 16:10 screen just fine so no command-line settings required.
Highly recommended for old-school gamers!

I just love the Descent series. If you have issues navigating in a 3D environment where nothing is up or down then you will have some problems with this type of game. But after training you senses and you get a feeling for the level it's a great feeling. Teaches you spatial navigation while being fun and entertaining.

I wish I could give this game a positive rating, but with the moving to Windows 10, I cannot play this game without massive lag or missing 70% of the rendering. I even tried NGlide 3DFX emulation, very laggy. Tried all the compatibility settings with multiple setups, same issue. I even tried to install the DX9 packages for windows 10, but no go. When I feel like it, I will try this on my Windows 11 installation. To be honest, I am absolutely baffled how people were alright with this game when it released in 1999 as it is simply an outright mess and the story line was mostly irrelevant to Descent I and II's story. So this proves to me that humanity started to have an intelligence decay even back then. Should have left it with Parallax Software, Interplay. Oh well, at least I can play this game now as I have a windows 98 Se box, but even then, why should I if I have Descent I and II on there also, which are way better games in my opinion.

Wow, I guess people are this lazy and can't find and run a simple source port.

Let's be clear about what you're getting here; the contents of the retail CD-ROM from 1995. Nothing more. It opens in DOSBox. There is a free source port available for both Descent 1 and 2 called "DXX REbirth." It makes Descent 1 and 2 100% customizable on modern PCs and you only have to copy the game files from the Steam folder to the download folder. For $5, this is reasonable. My favorite studio on Steam; Nightdive, will charge around $20 for his complete remasters of Forsaken or Turok which look and run like modern games thanks to his tweaks and updates and reskins, etc. This is just the base game you can throw in the source port and it's totally worth it, especially on sale. Please stop complaining about not being able to run it like the blobs from Wall-E.

I know it says I don't have very many hours, but Steam reads the launcher as playing the game not the game itself, as of writing this, I probably have around 8 hours in game.

Now remember, I write as someone steeped in nostalgia, since I literally grew up playing this game, so take my review with a grain of salt.

This game is pretty clunky, and is difficult to get running on modern machines, but if you can get it running to where it works okay, this game is super fun. Even after all these years, this is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Descent3 ist ein Spiel von 17Juni 1999 und macht immernoch sehr viel spass. Genau so viel Spass machen Descent2 vom 1996 und Descent vom 1995. Auch wenn man sich ein bisschen an die Grafik von Descent und Descent2 gewöhnen muss ;)

Third and last title of Descent series. After release of the second one Parallax Software broke into Outrage Entertainment and Volition Inc. The former made the last chapter of Descent series and the latter created not less interesting Freespace series.

Despite quite a big development in contrast to the second title, the third one was not accepted by all fans. The main reason is leaving simple shooter behind and changing it with narrative and complicated locations with alternating vast spaces and narrow corridors, and also kind of cartoon graphics. And though I understand what fans do not like about Descent 3, I don’t understand why they don’t like it. Yes, third title moved away from its origins but is it bad? I don’t think so: levels are now really complex and rich. And though developers tried to diversify maps even in the previous titles, the mines remained mines, but here we have mines and caves, industrial structures and planets’ surfaces, and even night city with a subway. Yeah, graphics became cartoonish because of engine change but game’s seriousness and difficulty didn’t vanish. The same can be said about gameplay. Though every mission now has its own goal, the main aspect of it is still shooter with simple spatial puzzles.

So I do not see a point in hating 3rd title and considering it a bad game. Yes, it is not perfect but first two games weren’t either. So, I recommend you to try Descent 3 too.

P.S. Use 3DFX to conveniently play the game on modern PC.

[b]+[/b] The final chapter to the [i]Descent[/i] trilogy saga was greatly needed for a story that was a little more than half-complete, and, executed using the right scripting, [i]Descent 3[/i] helps explain the entire situation about PTMC robots, why they were corrupt, and who was behind all of the attacks throughout the saga. (Forget the animation of the cutscenes that is rather dated and thus somewhat cringeworthy, although it may also make the cutscenes fun to watch.)
[b]+[/b] The graphics even for a Windows 98 game are the very type that makes us want to take them seriously and solemnly respect them, which is to say, it is among the best-looking graphics even by today's standards. The audio fits well as an excellent quality, too, and that music...
[b]+[/b] The artificial intelligence is greatly enhanced (they are more aware of their surroundings and stay being involved) and unpredictable, and the combat is surprisingly challenging, especially more so without powerups or on a higher difficulty level.
[b]+[/b] What makes this game arguably the best in the saga is the ability to fly in outside environments. Previously, we were busy navigating only mines and destroying reactors before escaping through an exit. With this, however, the game allows players to fly in mines and in the outside environment, allowing a true sense of variety.
[b]+[/b] Another thing that makes this game the best in the saga is that each mission has its own objectives for the player to complete, primary and sometimes secondary. Previously, we would play numerous varying levels with the primary objective being to destroy the mine's reactor core and escaping and the secondary objective to rescue hostages (for which the game rewarded the player). [i]Descent 3[/i] promises that numerous types of missions are possible.
[b]+[/b] Multiplayer is greatly expanded again, and it seems that it has reached the best that it could. One of the most functional and most developed multiplayer out there.
[b]+[/b] The useful wireframe automap has been entirely replaced with an even more useful one with textures, and using it is easier and clearer than it ever was beforehand.
[b]+[/b] Undisappointingly, it has played it safe and retained all the features that make a [i]Descent[/i] game what it should be: level editor, first-person shooter perspective, robots, multiplayer, cooperative, secret areas and levels--I could go on.
[b]+[/b] There may not be the Pyro-GX anymore, or the Earthshaker Missile, but there are three ships (plus another in the expansion pack that comes with the Steam version) with their own statistics, with one average, the second fast but weak, and the last slow but powerful, and there are more weapons like the Black Shark missile with more originality and an even wider variety of function. And we also have the beloved Guide-Bot as a sidekick that comes with us for all of the campaign. Like the one in the game's predecessor, it is of high assistance, which may make it and the Material Defender an excellent duo. However, powerups can make it an excellent weapon.
[b]=[/b] [i]Descent 3[/i]'s campaign, Retribution, somewhat falls "short" in that it partly feels like a comprehensive summary of a larger story, leaving some questions to be answered in the end, although all the important plot points are given. [i]Descent 3: Mercenary[/i] seems to have resolved the issue, so [b]this does not apply[/b]. Fortunately, this Steam version comes with the aforementioned expansion pack.
[b]-[/b] The game has been notorious for bugs such as those that would cause the game to crash apparently without an explanation, and unfortunately, at version 1.4, it still is somewhat buggy. The crashing is occasional, though somewhat predictable, and it can be made even rarer if one can identify the cause of the crash (such as using the Guide-Bot in multiplayer and exiting the [i]Descent 3[/i] windows perhaps to calibrate the joystick before returning) and avoid it. Gameplay-wise, I do not expect people to have too much trouble with bugs such as the Guide-Bot seemingly swaying to and fro in one area.

[b]SCORE: 95%[/b]

P.S. Rest in peace, [i]Descent[/i]. It may be true that there may never be a [i]Descent 4[/i] (though we do have [i]Descent: Underground[/i] and [i]Overload[/i]) and that the causative commercial failure was Interplay's fault, but you rocked the world with your inspiration and at least completed the entire story with [i]3[/i]. Hallo Community,

erst mal muss ich sagen das ich das Spiel schon seit Release als original Hard Disc besitze und im laufe der Jahre schon einige male durchgespielt habe. Ich finde das Spiel super, trotz der überfordernden Steuerungsmöglichkeiten. Aber auf ein paar dieser Steuerungen kann man auch verzichten. Z.B. die bei der man sich um die eigene X-Achse drehen kann. Sliden ist auch nicht unbedingt erforderlich. Nur nice to have.
Der Grund aber für meine schlechte Bewertung ist die fehlende Deutsche File für Sprachausgabe, HUD und Untertitel die die Entwickler hier an Steam übergeben haben. Sie ist im Original durchaus vorhanden und nur ein paar mb oder kb groß.
Ganz schlechte Leistung.

I bought this game because of nostalgia.
It runs surprisingly well, once you spend some time configuring it. I'm one of the few lucky people able to run it without issues or glitches.
Weapons variety is good, but graphically-wise, it didn't age well at all and it doesn't support widescreen.
Steam integration is not supported either. Your playtime only increases when the launcher is open. Once you press Play, you don't appear in-game anymore.
Still, I do enjoy playing it.
I would appreciate a remake by Nightdive Studios, they did a good job with Turok 2.

小さいころから慣れ親しんだゲーム。360°全方向に機体を移動させられるという独特の操作感覚は、今のゲームを探してみてもなかなかないだろう。しかし、そのプレイ感覚のせいで、３D酔いになりやすい人は非常に酔いやすいゲーム。そうでなくても、複雑なマップを縦横無尽に駆け回るためには、かなりの方向感覚、空間認知能力が必要になるだろう。今作は、施設内にある核反応炉を破壊し脱出するというミッションばかりだった前作までに対して、ステージごとに様々な目標を達成していくというものになっている。ただ敵を倒しつつ奥へと進むばかりでなく、途中で目標を遂行しつつ、マップ中を駆け巡らなければならない部分も多くなっている。マウスエイムは若干不自由なところがあるので、余裕があればフライトシム用ジョイスティックでのプレイを推奨したい。

I managed to get it to work after some software issues came up but here's what I have to say.
The game is not for the Average person, it is for somewhat older individuals who want to re-live the past.

It's fun in some ways but the game can be vague, and you can get lost easily and guides are somewhat harder to find as this game sadly didn't sell well back in 1999-2000 due to the other larger games that overshadowed it partly. It also can be antiquated by current day technology having that said I literally have to lower my mouse sensativity as far as it can go and still the game is extremely snappy this game is well out of it's comfort zone due to it's extreme age but if you have a older computer specifically for games like this by all means play it, but if not and you have something like a newer windows 8-10 computer it's best
probably not to sadly.

It's not the game's fault so much as whoever published it on Steam they really should of upgraded it's controls and options for modern systems.

I can't reccomend this game. While I enjoyed (and still enjoy) Descent 1 and 2, Descent 3 feels and looks worse than 1 and 2. If you do get this game, I would reccomend getting it through GOG or some other site other than steam, and only at a heavy discount.

I'm very pleased with this version of D3. I still have my old discs but they're getting almost to the point of useless (had to use that disk Dr. thing).
There is one thing I can't seem to figure out though. I can't seem to use the black pyro in multiplayer games, but it does show up in the Merc singleplayer. It doesn't even show up in the ship customization area. It's just not there, even though Merc is bundled with it.
I installed Win 10 and the next day bought the 10$ steam descent 3. It installed easily and I must say the game actually feels smoother than it ever has. There was a problem with it finding my twist axis, but it was just the sensitivity was defaulted to zero, easy fix. I use a sidewinder prepro.
After only a slight bit of tweaking (command lines, weapon priorities, and the usual ship customization) I was playing online with friends. I'm not really sure what the other posters are talking about how dificult is is to get working. Use open GL even tho it warns you not to, and use the native resolution command lines in the "misc" in setup. Then use plus or minus to zoom to your screen.
I've played this game since it released in 99, and this is my favorite version. It is so streamlined. I do wan't to try the black pyro though. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I can make a lot of nitpicking about the overly sensitive aiming, but for what it is, Descent 3 is a cool game.

Was Ist Descent?

Descent ist der Name einer Serie von Computerspielen aus den 1990er Jahren. Es handelt sich hierbei um 3D-Shooter, bei denen der Spieler aus der Egoperspektive ein Raumschiff in Pkwdurch verschiedene Umgebungen steuert und feindliche Roboter abschießt (so der Einzelspielermodus).

Im Mehrspielermodus spielt man in verscheidenen Spielmodi gegen- oder auch miteinander. (jeder gegen jeden, Mannschaft gegen Mannschaft oder gemeinsam gegen Roboter) mehr infos zum Multiplayer gibt's hier.

Descent1 war 1994 das erste Computerspiel mit einem ohne Einschränkungen gestalteten 3D-Labyrinth und freier Beweglichkeit der vom Spieler gesteuerten Einheit in drei Achsen und sechs Richtungen. Das Spiel war für DOS ausgelegt erschien jedoch auch für die PlayStation und lief später noch unter Windows 95/98.

Mittlerweile exsistiert auf grund der Quellcodeöffnung von Descent1 und Descent2 auch opensource Modifikationen welche das gleiche Spielvergnügen bei wesentlich verbesserter Grafik druch OpenGL auf Linux, Winows XP, Vista, 7, 8 und Mac OS ermöglichen. (Der Spielablauf sowie die Spieldateien wurden dabei nicht verändert) Mehr Infos & Download-link dazu unter: DXX-Rebirth.

Descent2 kam schon zwei jahre später auf den Markt, wurde ebenfalls als DOS-Programm geschrieben, lies sich aber enbefalls über ein Patch auf Win95/98 spielen. Es gab auch hier eine PlayStation version, welche in Amerika unter dem Namen "Descent2 Maximum" veröffentlicht wurde. Diese umbenennung war aus rechtlichen gründen scheinens nur in Amerika notwenidg, aus dem selben grund enthält die Playstaion Descent2 version auch andere level als die PC-Variante.

Mittlerweile besteht auch bei Descent2 mittels DXX-Rebirth die möglichkeit es auf den neusten Betriebsystemen zu Spielen.

Descent3 ist das aktuellste Spiel der Descent-reihe und wird regelmäßig von uns und vielen anderen gespielt.
Das 1999 erscheine Spiel läuft Problemlos auf aktuellen Betriebsystemen, es sind jedoch einige Dinge zu beachten, so ist Descent³ (besonders beim konfigurien der Einstellungen unter "Setup") im Adminestrator-modus auszuführen um einen fehlerfreien Betrieb zu gewährleisten.
Im Mehrspielermodus laufen kontinuierlich circa 50-80 Server, mindenstens einer davon auch mit Bot's (= vom Server emulierte Spieler). Diese "Bots" kann man vom Spielverahlten her zwar nur schwer mit echten Spielern vergleichen, jedoch können sie auch eine gute Ab-vex-lung bieten.[wink]

Obwohl es sich nach heutigen Maßstäben um ein veraltetes Spiel handelt, hat es eine kleine, aber treue Fangemeinde, die sich nach wie vor zu Online-Spielen trifft, neue Level erstellt und zweimal pro Jahr LAN-Partys organisiert

Just bought the game since I was a huge fan of the Descent series years ago. And, wow, it's amazing to see this Descent 3 running on windows 8.1!
I'm actually using the 3dfx nglide setup, since the graphics seem to be even better than opengl. Also using the 1600 resolution.
I had sound issues/glitches, and this was resolved using http://www.indirectsound.com apllied to the game. Now I can use the high quality sound settings, with directsound 3d.

The best game ever made.
I played this far more than any other game that has since come out.
On 56k we had 300ms ping and were proud of it!
Had to guess their location before they got there.
If only I could go back in time when servers were full and the game was new.
Seems to run ok. This game has always continued to run well on Nvidia cards over the years. Most complaints will be from those using ATI... I mean AMD.
Using Creative Alchemy I can reenable EAX in the game too.
I was glad to see this game showing up here. I hope it gains popularity.

While I do have fond memories of this game, it has not aged well. There are issues with the graphics implementation of both OpenGL and Direct3D, with only a Glide wrapper offering good, non-glitchy visuals (on is included in this version). That said, many graphical niceties aren't present if you don't have a Pentium 3 or better also includes AMD CPUs. Many audio APIs that D3 can use have been deprecated and/or removed from later versions of Windows, making the only good audio choice be DirectSound. The game wasn't designed with widescreen displays in mind, meaning that setting it to, say, 1080p is a pain and the graphics will either be squished or parts of the HUD will be cut off.

Note that these are present in version 1.4, and it seems that a company wants to update D3 to work better with more recent operating systems, including adding OS X and Linux versions. I'll try updating this review when/if they actually do update it.

Ben a serious gamer since...ohhh, about 1985 and when I say this game is CRAP, I mean THIS GAME IS CRAP!!!

I've had, played and LOVED both Descent & Descent II, and if you think it's gonna be anything like those, you will be SADLY disappointed.
I just WASTED my money...THANK GAWD I didn't pay full price or I would be REALLY P'd off!!!!

On a sidenote - Steam's game selections has been getting crappier and crappier as of late...thinking seriously about cancelling my Steam account and going with Gamefly or some other reputable provider

I am thuroughly impressed with this steam version of D3. I was playing my original installation just yesterday, and I did some testing with the steam version today, and I can say that this version is miraculously more stable than the original installation. Everything feels 100% the way it should be in game as well.

I am also pleased that this comes with the Mercenary expansion, and is properly updated to Version 1.4.

And finally, I did some testing with the multiplayer. I am acknowledging that someone else who gave a review said that he could only play with Steam friends. He is wrong. I have all of the tools necessary and ports open to run a game, and when I went to check Descent 3 Game Tracker, my game was there. I would like to add that just yesterday when I was trying to host a game, Windows Firewall was giving me problems and turning it off was the only solution. With this, I had no problems with the firewall.
I also tried it out with the D3Server tool. No problems there.

In short, I am very pleased with this stable version and I will be migrating all of my old and custom stuff to the Steam installation. That is the beauty of Descent, the fact that you can copy and paste its stuff everywhere and it'll run with it all.

Descent 3 is an excellent first person shooter that I haven't played in years. When I saw it on steam I was very glad they got this version to work and it is still one of my favorites next to the first one. Despite the hard controls, this game is worthy of buying if you have played the first two or like a real controlling challenge. If you can master this, the rest of the first person shooters will look like a cakewalk control wise.

One word of advice. Don't use the mouse, and better start learning the old art of using just the keyboard and the numberpad.

Descent 3 is an old favorite of mine. I learned to mouse-aim in this game before I had played any FPSes with a mouse. Playing it again, those robots are still hard to hit. Oh and the Steam version does come with Descent 3: Mercenary expansion pack. For those unfamiliar with the game, when you start a new game, select "Descent 3: Retribution" for the original single-player campeign. (Note: The first time it automatically runs you through training)

The game plays pretty well on modern Windows as long as you configure a few things correctly:
1. Launcher->Setup->Video tab: The DirectX renderer no longer works correctly; lots of messed up textures. The Steam version comes with the Glide emulation wrapper nGlide, so Glide mode seems to work the best. You can configure nGlide with the configuration tool in the Descent 3 directory. If you set nGlide to your native resolution and aspect ratio to 4:3, it can cut down the resolution changes in the game (it changes resolutions between gameplay and menus), but looks a little distorted.
2. If you have a modern SoundBlaster, you can restore 3D sound and EAX effects by using ALchemy, although you have to do so manually. See http://www.gog.com/forum/descent_series/enabling_5_1_sound_with_alchemy. After following instructions at link, go to Launcher->Setup->Audio and select "Creative EAX".
3. While you are in setup, on the Speed tab, set the Detail to Very High. On network tab, set LAN and your internet speed; most likely it will be T1 ~1.5Mbps.
4. Game Main Menu-Options->Video tab: You can turn up resolution. 1600x1200 is native on a 1920x1200 monitor.
5. Detail tab: You should be able to crank all settings to max. If you have performance issues in outside areas, turn down the terrain detail and/or render depth.
6. Sound: Set quality to high, and quantity up.
7. General and HUD tabs: set to taste, with one caveat:
8. MOUSELOOK DOES NOT WORK! Under Options->General->Sensitivity or Options->Config->Joy/Mouse->Adjust Settings DO NOT choose Mosue Control: "Mouselook". Stick with "Flight Sim". Mouselook was an acceleration mode that was designed to assist low sensitivity mouses when the game was made. I'm pretty sure it doesn't work as intended any more, but either way is much much too sensitive to be usable. Also, in online play, Mouselook is considered cheating anyway.
8a. What does work for FPS mosuers: (Re-)Inverting the Y-rotation or pitch Axis - go to Options->Config->Joy/Mouse and click the (?) button to the left of the pitch setting, then click Invert: "Yes". This will be unintuitively "non-inverted" according to modern FPS nomenclature. Now you can have mouselook-style control that works; adjust sensitivity as desired under Adjust Settings dialog.
9. Config: An odd control scheme that I find enjoyable to use is to play the game holding the left side of a gamepad in my left hand and the mouse in my right. I configure the controls in a typical console-FPS way: Assign left stick Y-Axis to Throttle, left stick X-Axis to Slide Horiz, D-pad X to Slide Vert, D-pad Y to Bank (or if implemented as POV hat, to Slide Up & Down, Bank Left & Right), left shoulder to Afterburner. Mouse X is Heading, Mouse Y is Pitch (inverted). Mouse buttons as default: LRC as Fire Primary, Secondary, Flare; Cycle Primary and Secondary with Wheel Up/Down. Extra mouse buttons can be used with items or countermeasures. You can also configure the right side of the gamepad to duplicate these controls, so you can move your right hand between gamepad and mouse. In this case right stick Y is also Pitch (inverted) and X is Heading. You can flesh out the buttons from there.
10. Once in-game, F1 toggles a handy keyboard guide. Use F3 to toggle cockpit (I prefer without). Use "+" key (near backspace, not num-pad +) to scale up rendering to full screen size.

Phew, after all that work, enjoy a classic that still offers a challange.

I'm definitely liking this game so far. I bought and played the heck out of Descent 2, Descent: Freespace, and likewise games back in the day on my Windows 98. Sadly, I only had a demo for this game and never got to enjoy it to its full potential, until now.

This game requires some tweaking with the controls and settings when you first get it, as any older game released on Steam usually does. However, I did not have to install any patches to get it functioning properly, which was nice. (I have not tried joystick support but the mouse is way more sensitive in this one than the first two)

In case you were wondering this version released on Steam does include the "Mercenary" expansion pack as well as a few other tidbits to play around with so you won’t be missing any content or have to buy anything later.

1999年に発売された360度浮遊FPSです（拡張ﾊﾟｯｸ込みです）
360度移動することが出来るので、操作性は独特ですが
慣れるととても気持ちの良い浮遊感が味わえます。

今回は野外に出ることが可能になった為、ﾛｹｰｼｮﾝが豊富になり
1、2と比べてﾏｯﾌﾟに飽きにくい作りになっています。
しかし360度ですので、相変わらず迷いやすいのが難点でしょうか。

野外と屋内で別々のエンジンを使い、それを融合した
Fusion Engineの美しい映像はﾌﾟﾚｲﾔｰの目を楽しませ
ｹﾞｰﾑの進行具合によって音色や展開が変化するBGMは
気分を盛り上げてくれます。

This game is a piece of crap. The lowest setting on the mouse sensitivity is still way way to sensitive and you are twissting and turning all over the place and can't aim at all. I used to own this game when it was a stand alone game and I loved it. Now that Steam offered it I thought it would be great but it is not. The policy on Steam says "They do not offer refunds" which means that even if you can't get it to work, you are ♥♥♥♥ out of luck and are stuck with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥, impossible to play piece of crap game that you will never be able to play. Do not buy this game, unless you are looking for ways to just throw away money on game s you don't really want or if you are going to gift it to someone that you really hate.
