Dead Letter Dept. is a short horror game mystery experience, where you use your computer keyboard to type in various prompts, and attempt to decipher damaged images as oddities begin to appear.
After moving to the big city, you got yourself an apartment, and secured a temp data entry job- just to keep you afloat till something better comes along. Your official title is a Data Conversion Operator, but you're really more like a warm body who types up all the junk computers still can't read. Day to day, you go to work & process the images displayed on your terminal, and type up whatever text is in front of you. Whatever can be made out, that is. Letters and lost mail, some mangled and twisted, that have travelled from place to place with nowhere else to go. Sometimes the mail you receive is a little strange. Sometimes, it feels like it's talking to you directly through the screen...

On night 1 or so, I made a comment to myself: "For a horror game, this is actually pretty relaxing." I lost that opinion when each night going forward made me tense up in my seat a little more.
Sweet, simmering dread that crawls into your eyes and wraps around your soul.
Also, the keyboard just sounds nice. Except when it's all crunchy.
Personally I really liked this game!! There were some frustrating bits (mainly a specific image I didn't know what to do with (I figured it out later though)) but overall very fun and interesting. Probably not for everybody, but certainly for me.
It's kind of weird how a psychological horror typing game has ended up not only becoming one of my favourites ever, but also something of a comfort game for me.
100%-ing this was a great experience: it was awesome seeing all the horrifying secrets, exploring all the nooks and crannies of it, and just losing myself in its nightmarish ambience. Would absolutely recommend!
Pretty good. I don't really get scared by stuff like this but I found the story (?) interesting, Made me want to figure out what is actually going on, although I'm too lazy to do that. I got one ending but I have no clue what I could've really done differently to get any others.

So....I really want to like this game. I do. It starts off really well, definitely creepy. BUT, here is what kills this game for me. There is a particular event in the game (if you have played you know what I'm talking about) where you spend a particularly long amount of time in the dark. This. ruined. the. game. I absolutely loathe this part in the game. I tried to give it a second chance and tried to play through again thinking, hey, I made it through the first time, let's give it another go, maybe it's not as bad as it seemed the first time around. wrong. This part, still sucks. And despite the fact that I did all the things you are supposed to do in this section, I still got irritated enough that I had to stop playing. I wish something different had been put in this part of the game in its place. Something less migraine inducing and more stimulating and fun for the player. As it stands, even though the rest of the game is enjoyable, I most likely will not be playing it again and it will just be a digital paper weight in my steam library.

I haven't felt dread and stress with a horror game for so long (since I played Darkwood, Visage or even FNaF4). Playing this game terrified me. The atmosphere, the sounds and the contents of the letters you have to transcribe work so well together. Didn't help with the fact that I was playing late at night so the terror was up to 11. This game, alongside Darkwood, is another proof that sound and atmosphere are the most effective way to scare people, not jumpscares. And the small stories you can see in letters you transcribes, that's a big plus to me. The concept of a horror game about an office work where you have to transcribe lost letters is so simple, yet, it was smart and very effective.
Very high recommendation if you seek good horror games.

was interested in this game from the brief glimpses of gameplay i got, but really did not expect it to affect me the way it did. i played this alone with headphones in a (mostly) dark room and i am certain my roommates heard my genuine screams and cries of "i want to go home :((". maybe i'm just a baby, but i honestly feel like the sound in this game did so much for the immersion, paired for the visual effects and expertly-crafted letters. highly highly recommend if you want a unique horror experience that'll only take a couple hours for a full-length playthrough, but his room to explore if you want to take it further. will be trying to bait all my friends into playing this for the foreseeable future
I was genuinely just looking for a typing-heavy game since an idle clicker of mine added more achievement milestones, and I wasn't expecting to find one this good!

DEAD LETTER DEPT. is equally enjoyable as it is suspenseful! Its ambient noise and sound effects are perfectly creepy and truly make the game. Not sure if I want to know why my typing sounded sticky that one workday. Don't know if my hands are shaky from the stress of typing quickly and accurately, because I haven't had anything but caffeine before playing a spooky game, or because I'm just a weenie. Definitely holds replay-ability in my book, and I'm looking forward to trying again.

really really good, very much enjoyed this and will come back for some other endings. very much recommended if you like an eery/surreal atmosphere, great sounddesign, a mystery that does not necessarily explain itself to you plainly AND/OR feeling utterly creeped out.
also i am writing this on the "thank you for playing"-screen and it just played a soundeffect that sounded like it was in my room and scared the crap out of me... i've been on this screen for a good couple of minutes. it's those subtly odd things that make this game so goooooood.

The atmosphere in this game was off the charts!! I bought this during Steam's Typing Week and I was not disappointed!! Games like these prove that you don't need to have 4k graphics in order to have an immersive experience. The different stories told through the mail and some paralleling the emotional turmoil the player faces since the start of the game are beautifully intertwining. The more days that pass, the more I had to wonder what was real or if I dreamt it. I'm very interested in unlocking the other endings!!

I have in some way, witnessed, partook in, or experienced every nook and corner of this game. It is NOT one of the best games every made. But it is GOOD. The atmosphere, the way it will make your heart race, not just because of the fear of a jumpscare. but a combination of elements that make even the chance of having to lose the "night" scary on it's own. don't worry about being the best typer out there. but being good at typing fast and accurately will help you. there's more to this game than the surface. It is clearly made with love and an actual passion to create an experience, that goes far beyond the need to create something simple or material. This easily fits into the kind of game I might bring up when argueing that games can be a powerful form of art. To the Dev, or anyone inspired by a game like this, keep it up. create your imagination. share your ideas with the world. Thank you.

I got this because I wanted a typing game (I got an awesome new keyboard and needed an excuse to type). And I think I picked the right game. It's insanely creepy. I got to type to my hearts content while also being scared and wanting to keep playing to see what happens. I didn't do much research into this game other than I get to type and I'm glad I didn't know what to expect. If you like unsettling games and typing, this is FOR YOU!

It's strange. I was in a fully lit room and playing a game that is just typing, feeling my fingers freeze up and a cold sweat develop under my arm. I caught myself breathing a heavy during a moment I was absorbed in my screen, which made me think, "A typing game made me do that?"
This game was well more than I expected; a blend of dread and anguish mixed with the real life monotony of a desk jockey. My only issue was with a minor hiccup of not realizing that saves only work once, and using it also doesn't allow you to use it again. Beyond that, my experience was fantastic and made my nerves crawl with a certain dread and anticipation that makes your fingers shake, making you slip up and mess up. It does better at creeping you out than a lot of other horror games I've played. While there are some jumpscares, this game avoids the loud and flashy for the most part, so I found them appropriate and tension inducing rather than cheesy or grating.
A few tips to anyone looking to pick this one up:
-This game has a functioning Copy/Paste system, which can be exceptionally useful involving certain addresses.
-I'd advise having a screenshot function or something that can take photos, which can help you recall certain addresses necessary for certain endings.
-Some endings will demand you to have decent typing efficiency. Hunt-and-peck typists might struggle with those endings.
-Your home address is not static between playthroughs. Keep in mind between runs
-Saves are once per run, and upon reloading you cannot use the save again. Only save if you actually need to leave the game or your computer. Also keep in mind that there are points late into a run where saving is not allowed, so be prepared for anywhere between an hour or maybe two for a full session.
Probably my favourite horror game i've played yet! Dead letter DEPT is a phenomenal psychological horror game making use of subtle environmental changes to make you feel uncomfortable and uneasy, with how long (and sometimes eerie) the letters are something as simple as the lights flickering off got a good spook out of me as it would break my focus and be rather startling.
Highly recommend this game, and also recommend multiple playthroughs as you may not come across some letters, scares, etc.

Real review: Went into this with no idea what to expect. 2.6 hour long first run, felt like WAY less. I have no idea what happened. It is now after midnight and I work tomorrow. Absolutely worth it.

Kept my interest the whole time without giving too much away and I'm curious to play through again and try for a different ending (and improve my typing speed).
My only negative point is that this game is DARK. Not dark enough that it was unplayable but dark in a way that what the darkness added to the horror was subtracted by the "huh? what is that?" of it. I wasn't really that scared of the darkness either since I didn't think I'd be able to see enough of what would show up lol (and I am normally PRETTY WARY of darkness). There is no in-game gamma slider which would have probably made my placethrough more enjoyable.
Would overall still recommend for alt horror fans and those who like PS1 style.

I really don't know about this one. I mean, it's not scary unless you think someone shaking your monitor while you are at work is scary. I already recognized most of the stories it was giving to me, like spontaneous combustion victims and bell diving atmospheric pressure dismemberment.

Never have I found a game so perfectly tailored to my interests: horror, typing games, and the postal system. This game has INCREDIBLE atmosphere and I'm simultaneously enthralled and unnerved. The music and visuals really immerse me in the experience, hammering home the despair of someone who is just trying to make it in this world and being subject to the horror that is a sketchy job with bad working conditions in late stage capitalism. And also the gradual decline of the perception of reality, of course.
not at all what i expected from this game but it was definitely made with lots of love & attention to detail. absolutely looking forward to playing it again for different endings <3

This game had potential, but that save option killed it for me. I went to the settings to disable the save limitation and I tried saving just for it to be deleted. I attempted three times to play this game and save it, but it kept deleting my progress. When are you supposed to save your game? Saving is supposed to be simple to do in a game. Very aggravating

This thing was a disaster right from the start. The graphics were terrible and made it near impossible to really discern many details, and ironically when I lowered the graphics option to the lowest, it actually made the images better. Then, the details weren't particularly scary at all, and it was hard to figure out exactly what the point was at all. I left the game for a couple weeks, then came back to it and got to what I think was the fifth or sixth day and suddenly the game crashed, then when trying to restart it, it ran maybe three minutes and crashed again. My rig is nothing to snort at, as I use it for 3D graphics all the time without issue, so I'm not sure what the deal is with this game at all. Going to ask for a refund.

It's the kind of game that keeps you hooked until you've seen every single ending.
Playing this game after hearing how people talked about it really has me convinced that horror media just generally doesn't do ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to me lol I wasn't really scared much while playing this (other than being startled by a few flickers and ||the hands coming around to clutch at my screen|| by I quickly got used to them).
However that doesn't mean this game wasn't fun and well-made!! I really like the atmosphere and vibe (which is the main draw of horror for me) and unironically enjoyed transcribing all the letters. I was always eager to go to work and tippy-typey on my keyboard The Horrors be damned. Anyways I like this game and recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a "menial" gameplay loop and is down for some slow-burn psych horror with mild oragnic/body horror elements.
So um it was really cool and unnerving. I don't know how I would possibly get other endings when I just got up and went to work everyday. Also I have significantly improved in typing so that was fun.

I enjoyed this game a lot, from my first playthrough to my last I was always discovering new things or experiences which hadn't been part of previous playthroughs. Getting into character via the starting letter was enjoyable and the soundscape worked very well to establish and evolve the mood across the game.
I don't know if it was bugged or intentional that zooming in on a letter only zoomed for half a second or so before it started zooming in repeatedly and so fast that it was impossible to see anything, but i mostly ended up leaning closer to my own screen instead to try to discern finer details.
If you enjoy dark games and fast typing, i can absolutely recommend this one!

It's not really spooky, things happen around the computer and on the way to work, but I couldn't be bothered by it.
And then at 2 hours in it crashed. And I don't know if that was an ending. But after typing that much, including bigger pieces of text, captchas and whatnot, no, this game isn't for me.

Dead Letter Dept has you take on the role of an individual who finds themself in a new city and in a new job as a data-entry analyst.
The game immediately does a good job at making you feel alone with nobody to talk to, an experience I imagine many feel when taking the leap from one's hometown to somewhere unfamiliar.
Mostly you will be copying down what is written on the letters into the database but then you'll start to notice that some things are just a little... Off. As the game progresses, your sanity will be tested as you keep going back to pay rent.
I don't want to say more about the games story because it's definitely an experience that can only be done once, despite having multiple endings, you're only going to feel the fear the first time really.
The sound design is absolutely top-notch, genuinely they've done a fantastic job at conveying horror, uncertainty and loneliness all in one nice little ambient background track.
I'll probably go back at some point and aim for other endings but I'd give this an 8/10 for what it is. A little short perhaps and maybe could use some kind of weird endless mode, don't know if that would work though. Solid game Really enjoyed it.

If you like indie horror - this is an absolute gem, the kind you find once in a few years.
Visuals are unique and creepy, but also balanced and tasteful. Sound design is minimal, but just right. The story telling through the letters - so well done. Not too obvious, but not too confusing. No cheap horror, just the perfect atmosphere and gameplay loop to make it feel disturbing. Also, the concept is simple, not revolutionary, but still feels fresh. There are multiple endings and with the gameplay, it makes me feel that it's worth replaying at least once.
The developers have great taste and I hope they can continue with other games, this is talent not everyone has.
I love the typing game genre in general, but this game stands out from the rest. The way she exerts psychological pressure throughout the entire playthrough is amazing. The game design looks like you're following the development of Van Gogh's paintings during the time he fell ill with schizophrenia. The sound design is also very good, constant wheezing sounds, ambient in the style of Silent Hill franchise, the sounds of footsteps behind your head.
I can’t say much about the plot, since I only completed one ending of “Possession.”, but I could sat that the idea with the timer was right on point, when it appeared for the first time I almost burst into tears because I had to not write carefully and slowly look at scanned letters, but in a hurry, with the fear of what would happen if I didn’t have time.
I really liked the game during playthrough and also was scared of it. But there is one complaint: why is there no pause button?? I almost ♥♥♥♥ myself on the spot. (I'm serious about the pause button)

This sort of went in a direction I wasn't expecting but overall it was a pleasant surprise. I like the classic data entry typing schtick so this was fun. Spoiler: I got the [spoiler] Possessed [/spoiler] ending and I don't think I plan to replay it so I'm not sure how many possible endings there are. I had a good time. I would have liked a little more of the data entry but I think this overall was an art piece and not meant to be a typing comprehension game.
TL:DR - Yeah, I think this worth a buy. It's a novel game and it's good for a play through. It only takes an hour and a half to two hours. You might as well.
This one's hard to describe, but I can confirm that the atmosphere is definitely on point. I don't recall ever feeling this tense while simply typing in data.
It's a feeling of being horribly isolated in a soul crushing data entry job while things get increasingly weird all around you. It's short at only a couple of hours, but I feel like doing another run to see if I wind up getting another ending.
Managed to convey a real good atmosphere of creeping horror, but the story is a bit meh... and the whole game is WAY TOO DARK for darks sake... which was a little annoying. I only just recommend this - b/c its ability to get under your skin is admirable.

I am a fan of typing games and while I am not normally a fan of horror/creepy games, this one has me hooked. I've only made it through 2 endings and can't wait to get through them all. I can honestly say this game gets better playing it through a second time, which is not something I encounter much with typing games. Brilliant game, incredible atmosphere, and genius incorporation of the typing itself. 10/10

ABSOLUTE CINEMA
I found this while looking for a typing game that would hold my interest better than typelit - yeah this definitely did!
I had very hard moments of panic playing the demo first; I was fully primed for a cheap jumpscare upon failing on a particularly blurry piece of mail enough times, but it never quite came. There are noises and screen static that do catch me off guard while I'm fully engrossed in typing, but it never seems to want to push you to the point of not being able to complete a playthrough.
The flashes of images and environmental changes were excellent, particularly if you're like me and occasionally look down while typing. So there were a few times where I genuinely was unsure if something had happened when I glanced back at the screen.
It sounds like I missed some scares, but there's something to feeling like I saw a glimpse of something I shouldn't have.
The general gameplay loop for your "shifts" is interesting and engaging. I look forward to finding all the achievements by virtue of wanting to see how many variations of mail there actually are (for example, I got the 'Stop sending to this address' letter series on my first full playthrough and 'the lovebirds' series on my second).
I'm very excited to clock back in and see how many ghosts are in this machine.
DEAD LETTER DEPT. has that type of horror that slowly sinks into your skin. it doesn't lambaste you with cheap jump scares or have you run from an indestructible creature. It just lurks in the back of your mind as you play though the game and lives with you for a bit afterwards when you go about your day.

An amazing take on the horror games that includes typing. The typing part isn't hard and the creepy factor is 10/10. Play alone in the dark at night.
I own a small business where I have type and ship orders for customers. This game is an exact replica of what it's like for me on the daily
15 bucks is a bit expensive for a less than 3 hour game but can be justified considering its depth, level of detail and multiple endings. You can tell a lot of care went into this game. Also another game that proves how important good sound design in horror is. The visual style is gorgeous too.
This was delightful and eerie. Great for a single sitting playthrough.
This is a great horror game.
It doesn't have jumpscares in the traditional sense, but the atmosphere is so unsettling in a game that seems so simple in its mechanic. Amazing job all over.
