Нудный сюжетный аркадный космосим, к которому для объёма прилепили пустой и неактивный открытый мир. Очень напомнила Фрилансер, но тот, кажется, получше, надо будет проверить.
Геймплейная петля такая:
-> Проходим сюжетную миссию
-> открывается вид двигателя помощнее
-> прыгаем в новый кластер космоса
-> собираем артефакты (количество фиксировано разработчиками)
-> качаем на единичку нос\крылья\корму Даркстар (корабль менять нельзя), в зависимости от прокачки,
(1) если нос\крылья - то фармим с логова пиратов и остовов кораблей и аномалий (там тоже пираты) новые турели\основные орудия (только там выпадают лучшие по спекам пушки, покупать оружие не нужно), ставим дополнительные, если при прокачке (линейной) стали доступны новые слоты,
(2) если корму - то просто покупаем оборудование на уровень выше
-> проходим сюжетную миссию
-> ... повторить ...
Если сравнивать с собратьями по жанру, геймплей которых я помню:
- получше второго Паркана, потому что быстрее и в Паркане ещё меньше разнообразия.
- более нудная, чем Элитка: Опасная, в последней шикарная околореалистичная модель полёта, можно менять спек кораблей по своему усмотрению, есть миссии на планетах (пешком\на транспорте), но отсутствует нормальный сюжет и цель странствий, помимо фарма.
- примерно такой же глупенький бой, как и в X4, но по остальным возможностям (торговля, майнинг, создание собственного флота) Иксы на сотню световых лет обогнали Даркстар.
Резюмируя, не худшая но и не лучшая трата сорока часов жизни. Оукейно.
p.s. Понравилось, что у каждого инопланетного вида свой внешний облик станций, а ещё для скайбокса некоторых звёздных систем использовали снимки настоящих туманностей, например Конской Головы.

宇宙ゲーといえばダダっぴろい宇宙空間を延々と移動するだけになってしまうがこれは戦闘寄りでマップも小さめ。だからX3よりは楽しめてしまった。宇宙船のアップデートもストーリーが進むごとにおこなわれていく。これがX3だと貿易とかで大量に稼がないといけない。その作業は少なめ。サブクエストで〇〇を倒してこいとか〇〇拾ってこいとか何個かやれば先に進める。戦闘はもっさり。宇宙空間だから仕方ない。なぜか日本語化可能。でも宇宙ゲーに当たりなし。それは間違いない。

Nach wie vor immer noch ein gutes Spiel, leider mit kleinen Problemen was manchmal den Spielspaß hemmt, sind teils Quests die sich aufhängen, oder so nicht richtig Funktionieren.

Oh boy, this one did not age well. The story is basically a 80% Freelancer rip off, there were some good fresh ideas and some awful ones to change things up. The main problem with it was that it dragged on for so long with so much filler. Nonetheless there are some good moments.
Gameplay wise you have all these cool races and ships but you are stuck in the Darkstar One, its evolving mechanic is cool at least.
There are too many systems, way too many, the worst thing is that they are not unique, all of them are copy pastes of each other with some random recolor, the planetscapes and colors are really nice but they were used in such a mundane way. The only unique systems are the ones with mega sized planets and I think I only saw 4 of those in total...
Mission variety is ok and there are a lot of unique side missions tied to each star cluster. The main story even had two planetary segments and the last mission also has a surprise.
Biggest flaw of the game is that you can brick progression by being too high level, meaning those extremely infamous Flak missions. I kept my ship at level 7 and I was able to pass them but they still felt awful, not to mention you have to play literally half the game like that if you do not want to cheat. On the other hand it felt glorious to use all my upgrades and curb stomp everything after they were out of the way.
Soundtrack is ok but there are not many tracks.
Graphics wise it held up, sadly the game is extremely unstable on 4k and sometimes even on 1080p. For example when I unlocked the lower portion of the map I kept getting crashes when I opened the map, there were also totally random crashes, cursor bugging out. MSAA setting completely breaks graphics with everything becoming black and only UI visible. Little annoyances.
Combat is ok once you get the hang of it but individually controlling the ship while individually aiming with the mouse was so weird. I say this because your guns shoot where you point, there is no centered crosshair.
Overall it is an interesting time capsule and since the space genre is so dead today it might interest you. Often goes on 80-90% off sale.

Не от большого ума и фантазии. Как музыка и битбокс, звуки идиотские, гримаса лица как у обезьяны, а он пыжится... , ни чувства вкуса, ни воспитания..., что-то вроде художественного пердежа... Так и в игре, хотите сделать сложнее - подумайте и сделайте красиво, а не портьте музыку художественным пердежом. Игру удалил. ну не мог просто так забросить. Нашёл выход: https://www.gog.com/forum/darkstar_one/flak_missions_work_around . В каждой атакующей группе по одному дрону. НО, теперь все группы дронов будут по одному и это не даст вам пройти следующую миссию. Поэтому лучше всего сохранить оригинальный файл .lua , который будете править и после прохождения миссии с зенитками заменить им тот, который редактировали. Я так и сделал, всё ОК. Теперь игра нравится! Играем дальше!

Nice little game with decent story, missions become repetitive after a while, and there is some unknown bug that crashes the game occasionally but other than that for the price a very good early space sim. Worth trying.

This game is so good. I got a lof of frustrations with other games like the X game series but not with this one.
+ Graphics are nice for a game 20 years ago.
+ Campaign and missions are ok.
+ A lot of actions/combat.
+ The system to improve your ship is great.
+ The UI is almost perfect.
+ The PC game also works on Linux using Proton 9.0.4.
- Trading not as good as expected.
For better graphics and newer/portable version, you can buy it for Nintendo Switch (now compatible with Switch 2 !)

The game doesn't work on the i9 13kf 4080 because it's too old. I wasted my money. The game doesn't have any support, and no one has brought it back to working condition since 2025. However, the game is very interesting, and the Russian version has been removed.
It is fun... I guess thats as much as I want to say about it....

This game holds up very well considering how old it is. Some of the most fun I've had in a space "sim". The hours showing on my account is wrong because I played this several times before steam tracked offline play.
В далекий релизный год не смог в это сыграть, по какой-то причине вся картинка на экране расплывалась в кашу в течение минуты после запуска. Тогда я отложил игру, потом еще отложил и еще, и вот так прошло 19 лет... Я рад, что наконец закрыл для себя этот гештальт.
Итак, игра воспринимается как нечто среднее между Фрилансером, Космическими Рейнджерами и Масс Эффектом, но с одним нюансом - тут всё очень поверхностно. Формально у нас есть космосим, куча систем, планет, фракций, есть прокачка, торговля, но это всё урезали, минимизировали, ограничили. Такое впечатление, что одна часть команды пыталась создать большую полуоткрытую игру, а другая била им по рукам, подчиняя все возможности линейному сюжету. Реиграбельности нет. Ты пройдешь игру один раз, получишь некоторое удовольствие, но потом никогда не захочешь вернуться, потому что RPG тут нет, выбора нет, прокачаться как-то иначе нельзя, пройти по-другому нельзя, секретов нет, случайных ситуаций нет. Это быстренькое приключение на один раз. Оно довольно неплохое, но:
- Космос здесь – это разукрашенный аквариум с рыбками. Он очень маленький и очень попсовый, все планеты близко, расстояния между объектами – на велосипеде доехать. В бою корабли друг в друга долбятся как электро-машинки на детском аттракционе.
- Садиться на планеты нельзя, выйти из корабля нельзя. Все системы по наполнению плюс-минус одинаковы. Все станции одинаковы. Везде продается одно и то же (ну почти).
- Есть возможность быть пиратом и контрабандистом. Но нет смысла. Обычно, когда игроку дают быть плохим, под это подводится основа: определенных персонажей или расы есть за что ненавидеть, за что наказать, отомстить, или ты хотя бы можешь достать себе навороты, которые добрякам не дают. Но тут ты награбишь копейки, тебя будут повсюду гонять менты, многие квесты станут непроходимы, от репутации потом не избавиться. И всё это чтобы что? Это всё даже не вяжется с сюжетом, который линеен и по которому герой – хороший парень.
- Рандомные задания со станций выполнять надо. Ради денег. Но их всего штук 10, и половина из них – злодейские. Переигрывать одно и то же вам надоест моментально. А придется.
- Вы ЗАБОДАЛИ со своим 600-тонным транспортом! Когда авторы не могут или не хотят записать достойное количество фоновой болтовни, ее лучше не записывать вообще. Никто не хочет слушать одну фразу через каждые 2 минуты.
- Расы инопланетян нелепы. Типовой набор покемонов для любого детского сериала: условные клингоны, условные лунные амазонки, ящерики, насекомусы, улитки с глазами на стебельках. Это клише, китч! Авторы даже не старались придумать какие-то концепты, просто взяли то, что дети на бумажках рисуют.
- Тема растущего живого корабля вообще не раскрыта. В свое время я переживал за голодающего Леккса, которому достался капитан-дебил, и за Мойю, у которой родился сын Талин с пушкой, а потом погиб (привет всем, кто в теме). Но здесь корабль просто есть и просто прокачивается. У него нет своей арки, истории, с ним не связано никакого переживания, у него нет своей личности. Он даже не выглядит как живой. А зачем тогда было вводить тему?
- И почему только он один в галактике может использовать плазменное оружие? Гравитонное могут все! А плазму - только этот...
- Есть баги. По идее все системы должны открываться по сюжету, плюс за выполнение доп. заданий. Но иногда триггер не срабатывает, и система навсегда остается закрытой. К счастью, это касается только дополнительных, а они не нужны, поскольку последний уровень корабля всё равно можно получить лишь после завершения сюжетки. То есть когда в игре делать уже вообще нечего. По сути вы ничего не теряете.
- Торпеды не работают. Вообще. Читал в интернетах, и там перечислена целая куча тонких условий для их использования, из-за чего они теряют всякий смысл, но я из принципа попытался всё это воспроизвести… Не получилось. Это просто нерабочая механика. К счастью, вся игра спокойно проходится без них.
- Сюжет от части является детективом, а любой детектив заканчивается тем, что следствие выходит на самих себя. За это я и ненавижу этот тупейший жанр, ему 150 лет, а нас продолжают кормить тем, что злодеем оказывается если не сам следователь, то его друг или покровитель (Лига выдающихся джентльменов, Особое мнение, Видок, Иллюзия обмана, Апгрейд, Вечные). Здесь такое тоже есть. К счастью, здесь это не весь сюжет, а только одна из линий.
Но не смотря на кучу недостатков, оставляю положительный отзыв, плюсы всё же перевесили. Это произведение той благородной эпохи, когда в играх еще не было повестки, донатных помоек, скинчиков, трехлетнего допиливания после релиза, судебных разбирательств, а сюжеты, фантазия, игровые мульты и озвучка от Акеллы еще были. Тогда игры были пропитаны романтикой молодости, исследования, позитивной технократии, женщины были красивы, а мужики были мужиками. Всюду были лазеры, киборги, стиль Y2K, пылание светил, вера в будущее. И чего-то такого невероятного все мы ждали впереди. Примерно тогда, в 2005, зонд Гюйгенс на Титан сажали, и что-то это для нас тогда значило. И Стартрек тогда не был до смешного старым сериалом, и игры с каждым годом всё хорошели, и народ с каждым годом становился чуть добрей и чуть богаче, и всюду было MTV и Европа+, и мир дышал молодостью. В игре есть что-то от этого вайба 90-х и нулевых. Это далеко не самая крутая игра, но ее стоит пройти, чтобы окунуться в атмосферу близкую к сериалам Мейнфрейм (ReBoot, Beast Wars, Shadow Raiders, Action Man) и заодно увидеть, где еще воровали идеи авторы Масс Эффекта.
Особенно хочу отметить в игре арку Эоны. Обычно подруга героя в таких играх или сериалах – либо верная идеальная тян для него, либо дева в беде, либо коварная мегера, но здесь авторы пошли особым путем, у нее достаточно оригинальная роль в этом всем, и мне это одновременно и разбивало сердце, и радовало, потому что авторы реально нашли, что делать с персонажем. Это было достойно.

Great Space-Action Game.
This is an old title I picked up during a steam sale on a "let's give it a go" purchase....
I really enjoyed the game despite it's age and linearity.
The graphics are good but not great. Considering the age of the game they are perfectly fine and give it that nostalgic post Wing Commander feel that I remember from the 90's.
The controls are simple and easy to pick up. i played with a mouse and this was easy to do everything required to win the game.
Audio is really good and best of all it doesn't stand out and overpower the actual gameplay like some games do. Dialogue is good for the main story line, but can get quite repetitive later in the game, particularly when you jump into a system or leave the trade station. I mostly ignored it. The music is often a dead giveaway as you load into a system and the encounter music plays before it fully loads. Oh look, the pirate music, I had best hit "r" on entry and target the closest hostile..... :)
The story is interesting at the beginning and has you flying over the entire galaxy map by the end. For me, there were 2 systems left undiscovered by the final battle and one of the rewards for completing the final battle is a key to one of the systems I missed. In fact you can't upgrade to level 20 until after the final battle as the last artifact is in that system that the key reward unlocks access to..
Dialogue is well done and just enough to move the story along and no more. There is some character development but not much. Fairly vanilla and obvious. As for the actual story and gameplay, it is very linear and the only reason that you do the side quests and bounty board missions is to unlock systems, get artifacts to level up, or to make money to upgrade in the early to mid game.
Despite that, I had a lot of fun and it was quite relaxing. There were a few crashes to desktop which forces you back to the last save, but I have played some other much more recent games that have crashed more than this.
Be careful of any scaling on your desktop as this can wreak havoc with the accuracy of your mouse inputs and prevent you from playing the game. Set scaling to 100% before you load the game. It will save a lot of heartache!
Overall a good game that isn't too difficult and a great blast from the past. Grab it if you see it on sale!
Had this in my Steam library for ages, decided to play again. A surprisingly fun game, WW2 dogfights in space, but it does get repetitious since each system is about the same. Note that enemies scale with your level which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.
Smuggling drugs, videogames, or androids is the best and most fun way to make money in the game; I was laughing at how tense it was hauling 100+ tons of illicit trade goods while aiming for the perfect trade station approach vector and working the afterburner to dodge all the cops buzzing around.
Also nice to play a 2006 game that just works on Windows 10. I had a few crashes but only while tabbing through the menus on space stations, which was only a small annoyance because the game auto-saves when you dock anyway.

Positives:
- Attractive female characters.
- Value for money if you get it on sale.
Negatives:
- Flight controls aren't as good as modern equivalents like 'Star Citizen', 'Elite Dangerous', or arguably even 'No Mans Sky'.
- While the female characters are attractive, the game has no real sex appeal, & the general aesthetic is that this is very much a game for young children, which is fine, but this is my review, so I am stating my preferences, not other peoples, & this game has a very safe, cuddly feel to it that I honestly find rather off-putting.
- The controller support is terrible. It might be possible to get this working with Steam controller support, but the defaults don't work well, & at time of writing there are also only 2 community made ones, which I also didn't think were very good. I could try & make my own but I just can't be bothered.
- No character customisation, no ability to play as a female character. You play as John Darkstar.
- It's generally known by this games fans that there is a 'second turret mission' that is infamously broken. You need to beat this mission to progress the main story, & the more you have leveled up your ship by that point, the harder the mission is, due to a glitch caused by enemy scaling (yes, when you level up, the game just makes the enemies harder). Which means that to beat the game, you need to try & get to this mission before you have leveled up too much or you won't be able to beat it and progress the main quest line. The only community patch for this vastly changes the game, including changing much of the games text into German.
- If like me you already own 'Star Citizen', 'Elite Dangerous', 'No Mans Sky' & most of the 'X' series, it's pretty difficult to justify owning this as well, even at the low price point.

Great game for chilling out. I bought it years ago on 360, then bought it again here for KB+M controls. Just enough systems to be entertaining, but not so deep that you're micromanaging diplomacy and trade routes. If I want that, then I'll just play one of the X series of games. I love 4X games as much as the next guy, but sometimes I just want gratuitous space dogfights and light trading.

Ein Spiel aus meiner Kindheit. Wundervoll... wenn es Funktioniert. Ich habe mir diese Version extra über Steam gekauft weil ich dachte das die Game-Breaking Bugs wenigstens entfernt wurden. Das ist nicht der Fall. Beim springen zwischen den Systemen hängt sich das Spiel immer wieder auf. Ein Problem welches ich auch bei der CD-Version hatte, nur wenigstens viel später im Spiel, damit man schön viel Zeit verschwendet ;)
Ich rate davon ab es zu kaufen, da es jederzeit zu einem fortschrittsvernichtenden Crash kommen kann,
Online-Hilfe gibt es leider auch nicht, außer ihr wollt euer Betriebssystem neu aufsetzen.

the flak missions are unbalanced and have been a complaint when released, not addressed by the origniators.
There are workarounds, but I neither wanna edit files nor do I wanna stop progression until after those 2 missions....
if you can get it for a dollar, okay, but otherwise...
And feth me, but the final confrontation is worthless and the whole level is just meh....no real boss, no real sense of urgency, no building up of the antagonist.

as guess what as soon as i started the game it found my controller i re - config the buttons and i am good to go.

而当我听着音画不同步的对白，看着拖拖沓沓又尬到爆炸的剧情与演出，熬过千篇一律的打工任务，忍受动不动就闪退的 “ 稳定表现 ”，最后倒在了最简单难度都打不过的司马高射炮环节时，我终于明白了这块电子垃圾归于沉寂的原因。
It's Freelancer with a bit of Descent. Very fun, although could get a bit repetitive. It's very old-school, looks the part, the mechanics feel good and snappy, and the voice acting is a bit iffy - but can still very much be enjoyed overall. No compatibility issues with modern hardware so far.

Осталась в истории геймдева за две первые части Sacred, которые были довольно неплохими представителями диаблоидов своего времени (те, кто считают их душными, видимо, никогда не видели в глаза Локи или Silverfall, ибо, по крайней мере, в Sacred были изюминки, за которые их запомнили), а также за серию экономических морских стратегий Порт Рояль и Негоциант с невьебической сложностью непосредственно экономической составляющей.
Попытались они когда-то и в космосимы, собственно, результат этих стараний перед вами. И что хотелось бы сказать сразу - впечатление от этой игры не подвержено ностальгии, ибо 18 лет назад она вызывала абсолютно те же чувства.
Что это за игра? Сюжетный аркадный полуполноценный космосим. Странный жанр, да? Вот и мне было странно видеть это, что в год её выхода, что сегодня. Игра достаточно бодренькая, как космосим, но при этом довольно однообразная. В ней есть вроде как экономика, но она отстойна по меркам многих экономик в других играх, и вообще недопустимо убога для конкретно этих разработчиков.
Есть квесты, которые берутся на терминалах, но быстро приедаются из-за своего однообразия. Есть некая шкала авторитета, но разбираться в ней неинтересно. Есть сопровождение кораблей, про существование которых вы можете не узнать вообще, если не нажмёте ни разу на соответствующую кнопку терминала любой торговой станции. Есть много нюансов, которые либо непонятно зачем сделаны, либо непонятно как. Чего стоят только автономные дроны, которые тягают за кораблём груз и при этом значительно ограничивают его манёвренность. Это вообще как?
Или вот ещё - корабль у нас уникальный, имеет уникальные апгрейды, но почему-то все во вселенной апгрейдятся вместе с нами, сводя эту самую уникальность ровно к одному отличию - наличию банальной ульты. Ульты у космического корабля, да.
Сюжет при этом достаточно неплох, но только в нём не чувствуется главного - космического размаха. Все те же события умещаются в пределы одного города без потери в чём бы то ни было. Ещё там параллельно кипит где-то жизнь, сводки новостей свидетельствуют о разворачивающихся политических баталиях. Но есть одно "но" - вы можете опять о всём этом не узнать, если банально никогда не будете нажимать на соответствующую кнопку в терминале торговой станции.
Отдельный финт ушами - это героиня с постера. Прикол её в том, что она хоть и главная, но при этом как бы проходящая мимо. Вначале её нет, после знакомства с героем она большую часть времени является помощницей-говорилкой (ну той, типаж которой простебали в фильме "В поисках галактики", с той лишь разницей, что здесь она не повторяет за компьютером, а просто заменяет его предупреждения своими репликами), разок будет захвачена в плен, а в конце уйдёт, но оставит в компе свою виртуальную аватару-напоминалку. При этом герою она не даст, а её охуительная история для общего сюжета нахер не нужна, ибо её бэкграунд - банальные бандитские разборки, причём всё так же ни разу не космических масштабов, опять же, не самые плохие, но блин...
Как космосим игра одновременно и аркадна и много в чём детальна. Есть много всего, что есть в приличных космосимах, но всё это выглядит либо недоделанным, либо специально упрощённым. Космос красивый, местами очень даже с поправкой на уровень графики, но почему-то слишком светлый. При этом очень мало дизайнерских решений из-за малого количества рас и малого количества доступных объектов этих рас. Сам корабль, кста, поменять нельзя. Разрабам X Rebirth не у кого было подсмотреть, почему это плохая идея, да-да-да...
Музыка в игре неплоха, создаёт приличную часть атмосферы. Проблема в том, что она в полном составе зачем-то используется ещё в одной игре - Crash Time, не помню какой по номеру. И вот там она не к месту, а тут неплохо так смотрится. Как эту херню комментировать я вообще не знаю. Игра настолько плохо продалась, что они продали права на музыку другим разрабам?
В общем было ровно три неудачных космосима, вышедших почти в одно время и с хорошими предпосылками, но по той или иной причине плохой реализацией: Стармагеддон 2 от поляков Сити Интерактив, который был запредельно невнятным по сюжету, но с неплохой динамикой, Хроники Тарр от русского геймдева, который был охуительно стильный, но запредельно невнятный по наполнению и вот эта вот Тёмная звезда-1, которая по вообще непонятным причинам не пыталась в глубину заявленной идеи.
Ставлю палец вверх только за то, что как аркадный космосим для вкатывания в жанр пойдёт, ну и за атмосферу.
P.S. Да, кстати, мало кто знает, но у игры есть полный дубляж от Акеллы. Учитывая невысокий уровень актёрской игры оригинала, но всё-таки необычный язык - немецкий, плеваться от русской озвучки вы вряд ли будете. Ищите его на zoneofgames...
Campy, really old graphics, but still fun to play. Get's a little repetitive and monotonous in places, but still a decent space combat fighter game. Love the upgrades to the ship, but some of the side quests and special uses are counter-intuitive. Even so, It's fun to play and complete.

I played this on CD long time ago... in a galaxy far far away...
It was an okay space shootout and trading sim game. Quite similar to Freelancer and I like it because, well, I like most games from the extinct Ascaron Entertainment.
The graphics is tolerable, the space dogfights are good, the characters are uhhh and the story is below average and very linear. There's only one ship that you need. The ONE ship that rules them all!
But after awhile, you get bored of the same repeated actions and missions. Also, I stopped trading because killing pirates will give you more money. As I slog slowly towards the final end, I would only recommend this to gamers who love both space sim and grinding, and have a very low expectation of a game.
P.S. - There are more populated planets here than any in Starfield. Also, You will finally meet all the developers from Ascaron at the end of the game, literally.

Not a big fan of space sims, but this one just works for me for some reason. Most likely because of the atmosphere and the ability to auto lock onto targets.

Wouldn't save , kept giving warning about virus and threat potential for unauthorised changes to folder , tried to turn the music off and it said restart game for changes to come into effect ... restarted and no change ... otherwise the game it self is a great item

DarkStar One hätte für mich ein gutes Spiel werden können. Die ersten ein bis zwei Stunden haben mir gut gefallen. Die Steuerung des Schiffes war super und auch das Konzept das Schiff immer weiter zu verbessern, sowie mit den verschiedenen Fraktionen und Gebieten gefiel mir sehr gut.
Leider konnte man das Spiel ab einer bestimmten Stelle nicht mehr weiterspielen. Immer wenn ich in ein anderes Sternensystem wollte, fror der Ladebildschirm ein und nichts funktionierte mehr. Neuinstallation klappte nicht und nachdem ich das Spiel von vorne anfing, fror es an der selben Stelle wieder ein.
Leider ist dieses Spiel somit nicht Empfehlenswert!!!!
Hat mir viel Spaß gemacht. Hab es damals als Original gehabt (leider lange verlegt), mehrfach durchgespielt,und dann irgendwann auf Steam wiederentdeckt und erneut durchgespielt.
it is functional space fighter sim, but mainly boring, the few things it do well is okey, but they are few and far between, and that just make the game rather grindy, and it is not like it do much in total, some parts seems to have been added on as an after thought, that include the story.
quite a few things just do not feel thought through, there is a "carer system" that kind of looks like it is suppose to reward you if you do a care path/skill enough, you can easily miss it, 2 of them you are going to get maxed out in no time just doing the story, but the "rewards" mostly just feel meh or more like punishment, ie shooting pirates, something you have to do as part of the play through "rewards" you with getting attacked by pirates more often.

If you"ve ever played Freelancer it has the same feel, but a bit more limited.
This is a great fusion of FTL and Freelancer. The pace is great. You can upgrade fast if you hunt for the artifcats and special weapons. Then things just get better really. id say im 60% into the story. Reccomend thus far
I like this game, feels cosily, met it as a demo years ago and played many hours. It's not a game that can be finished in two afternoons and for that it may feel repetitive.
If you really like it and want more content or feel something is missing, there is a nice mod called "Versteckte Cluster" - unfortunately German only. (not sure if it works with old saves)
voices are a bit outdated, but the gameplay is fun and the music is awesome ^^
Much better than Starfield
Gra jest fajnym odmóżdżaczem, dodatkowo są dostepne do niej mody, polecam Elite 1,4. Umożliwia rozwój statku na maxa, dodatkowe systemy i dodaje potężniejsze bronie, choć na ich zakup trzeba poświęcić mnóstwo czasu. Plusem jest fajna muzyka.
So faszinierend lange, komplexe Epen auch sind, manchmal muss leichte Weltraumkost auf'n Tisch. Die Knäckescheibe mit Frischkäse, ein leichtes Helles dazu, fertig. Genau das ist Darkstar One. Da es sich mit Ascaron um einen deutschen Entwickler handelt ist auch die deutsche Sprachausgabe sehr gelungen. Ich spiele gerne auf englisch aber bei guter deutscher Vertonung greife ich immer zu meiner Muttersprache.
Hier kann man alles machen, was man sich von einem "Weltraumstoryshooter" so erwartet. Handel, Piraterie, Kopfgeldjagd etc. Credits sammeln, Schiff verbessern. Klar, die Grafik ist von 2006. Egal. Die Steuerung ist angenehm simpel und man kann einfach mal beherzt in sein Weltraumknäcke beißen. Ein Schluck vom Hellen dazu. Wunderbar. Immer dann, wenn es mal nicht Star Citizen oder X4 sein muss.

Its a fun old game. It really deserves a remake with some mods.
The companion voice is a bit repetitive and annoying and there is one mission that everybody hates its best to just download a mod that skips it. but other than that its a good old space sim.
It's a space sim with RPG elements. Works well on a modern computer and runs great on Linux, but just not my sort of game. Becomes very repetitive very quickly, and from other reviews I've read it gets more rather than less repetitive in future.
Seems like it's worth a good review, but it's not my cup of tea so it won't be from me.
Great game, enjoyed it on the xbox 360 and reliving it on pc has been super sweet.

SImple but surprisingly addictive gameplay
A fairly straight-forward, well-polished mid-2000s space-sim. A lot of very early 2000s games aged bad, but this game was part of the later era where they started to hold up well, with decent graphics and gameplay. No weird overly-complicated bonkers jank or gimmicks really.
If you just want to jump into a space sim game, where you get a ship, can go go around making money and upgrading that one ship, with some story along the way and over-the-top voice acting so-bad-it's-good scenes and writing, then you'll enjoy it. The controls work well, works good with a joystick, looks good, feels great, lots of NPC ships flying around, systems/stations to explore.
On the downside, it is quite repetitive and is a slog of a grind to make any money to be able to afford any upgrades at all. Just to get a better anything is tens of thousands of credits, and each quest is several thousand credits. So you'll have to do several repetitive missions from mission boards just to upgrade one system.
I'm not marking it down for this, because many space-sims do it, but it suffers from "World War II Air Combat In Space". Additionally, while the flying feels good, all other ships seem to be flying with completely different sets of physics. If you recall Wing Commander, that it's not actual space ships "dogfighting" but more of you're a mobile turret and the enemy is the only one flying, and battles turn into bouts of "space joust". You could literally just zero out your engines and pretend to be a turret and fight that way. Nevertheless, in Darkstar One, the flying looks/feels good, with nice polish, so that helps, but just be aware it's a lot like those other sims where there are no actual space physics, but feels like 2.5D bumper cars or driving a boat instead of an actual 6DOF space ship...in space.
The game has factions but pretty much do anything wrong, the entire galaxy will want to destroy you and you can't land on stations to sell any loot or anything (what loot really, nothing ever "drops"), or buy upgrades or get new missions, etc. To pay to still get on is absurdly expensive it would take you 2 or 3 missions just to be able to afford it, and is a waste of time. Really, so why bother? What a shame, not a good design.
Overall, an incredibly grindy game. If you want to just jump into a game to take a break from other games, have time to spend, and have some fun, this is a good choice. It's reminds me of the MMO mentality, of just wanting to jump in and spend a bit of time leveling up or doing a few quests for some gold. It struggles however to keep you pulled in. They try though pretty hard and all the polish the devs gave to this game really helps go a long way. There isn't much in the way of mods or ways to tweak the game to help things a long either. Nope. Huge galaxy map goes to waste too as result of a the repetitive grind. There's simply no reason for an MMO mentality on dragging out gameplay in a single-player game like this.
For what it's worth, it's a good effort and look/feel is great, and I've seen other games boasting features but they "phone it in". and can't even deliver on the level this game does. It's for that reason, despite the issues, why I Recommend, because the effort shows. The Pros edge-out the Cons, it's a solid title and strong effort.
But if I could I would still rename it though to: "Grind Star: Level One"
It's worth the money. If there are any issues just run the game as administrator. I ran it over 2 hours. It runs excellent on modern laptops. The intel core i7 10th gen cpu runs it as if it is notepad. Smooth frame rates and nice graphics. Gameplay is fun. I like taking the bounty missions and take my time.
The game is reminiscent of Freelancer but the controls are different so it takes some time to get used to. There is plenty of missions. Don't get in hurry. Credits come fast. I hope everyone can enjoy it.
It seems it now works on a different computer. IT had unsolvable bug that crashed the game on my last PC.
Meh is an acurate rating. About 40h from star to finish.
It has a linear plot, I MEAN REEEAAAAL MONORAIL KIND OF LINEAR. You wondering if you left something behind or an upgrade to collect? You didn't. You can end the game easily in 30h by knowing this.
-Not an easy game but it wont make you pull out hairs in desperation.
-Plot and history are nothing new, you can easily predict how its going to end when you see the intro.
-Dialogs are ok, sometimes cringe.
-Economy is simple, easy to make money trading or hunting bad guys and fetch quest try to have plot twists that prevents boredom.
-Gun variety is ok, linear bigger or newer = better.
-Superpowers have a lot of variety, no need to be picky when choosing because ITS LINEAR, you will get them all.
-Graphs and sound are ok. UI is good, you can prevent animations from landing or changing screen when you get bored with them and save a lot of time.
-ITS LINEAR!!!! No replay value.
-Cheap game makes good value.
Alternatives: it's not on par to oldies like "tachyon the fringe", "independence war", freelancer, etc with great plots but old graphics.
Its better or on par with rebel galaxy or outlaw, starpoint gemini series...
The X series, although a bit economy focused are better in every regard.
The best alternatives are EVERSPACE 1 and 2.
If you are into the genre you know there isn't too much to choose from so you will eventually play them all.
BEST line in the whole game: "Why does everyone we meet is in trouble? Because they are stupid!"
classic game that I enjoyed playing but after playing it for some time it now crashes every time I try and access the menu for swapping out weapons on your ship and there is no longer any support for the game. very frustrating to not be able to finish the game

Я грав у неї 5 годин і все було добре. Встиг побачити наявність лише лінійного розвитку корабля(коли ми маємо виключно один варіант всіх приладів де кожен наступний прилад це потужніший попередній, це жирний мінус як на мене), але й цікаву систему перків котра, щоправда, зірок з неба не хапає, але хоч щось... А потім гра зламалася якогось біса.
Тема в обговореннях із описом подібних симптомів є і вона ще 17-го року. Варіанти рішення є, але так чи інакше вони натякають на те що час від часу ми будемо втрачати значий шмат прогресу і чи не кожного разу треба буде перевстановлювати гру... Ця гра того не коштує. Навіть у рейкових космуляторах типу Freespace є різноманіття - тут нема. Воно того тупо не коштує.
Символічно, що розробник Ascaron, той самий що і в Sacred, котра також страждала від багів насправді. Досі пам'ятаю як в оригінальній Sacred зіткнувся ще малим із багом котрий фактично софтлочив прогрес. Іще символічніше, що навіть того часу котрий я провів в цій грі вистачило зрозуміти що вона буде така ж душна... Але на неї, навідміну від Sacred котра дістала хоч якоїсь слави, ніколи не буде ком'юніті патчу який би полагодив косяки(хоча в цієї гри є інструментарій для модмейкінгу). Проходьте будь ласка мимо. Краще Freelancer перепройти.
I like to win. It makes me feel good. If you play my way, it is EASY to win regardless of what other posts say.
1) You need to make your ship with only 2 forward guns - the rest should be turrets. You may replace one gun with missiles as needed to take out small ships quickly like when they are attacking your cruiser.
2) You go away from them just outside their attack range. Go UP just enough to bring them into range ~0.9. If you get into their firing range ~0.8, boost to just outside of it. Even red bosses, guards and 8+ enemies die easily - doesn't matter how many or how red they are.
3) Boost while strafing left while rolling to get away if you need to. They can't target/lead you that way.
4) Go to the news channel and find the pirates (e.g. Lalande - Akim/Pachee & Karmiti/Obas). Do them. They drop special weapons - you don't need to buy weapons. Redo the pirates (go outside of their area (Lalande) and come back - it will reset the pirates), they will give you better weapons (+1, +2 etc). Get at least ONE turret first. Keep track on paper where these pirates are in each area.
5) The hardest part is probably when you are on the station and waves of little Thul ships are attacking. THE biggest mistake is to take out all of each group. Leave ONE in 3 groups. Let it attack. It doesn't do that much damage. Destroy the other groups completely. When the waves are done, kill the singles. Easy.
6) Get your shields max then invulnerability. Hit and run with invulnerability. The big ships go down easy.
WORTH BUYING!

Sacred 2 is a masterpiece... beats Diablo 4 in my opinion. Way bigger. Funny. Fully 3D camera.
And then they made Darkstar One. Explore heaps of space, enjoy immersive space combat, a variety of gameplay approaches, and a hybrid rpg system intermingled in there with the ship upgrades and artifact hunting.
We need Ascaron back.
Darkstar One ist eines meiner Lieblingsspiele hier auf Steam! Es erinnert stark an Wing Commander aus den früheren Amiga Zeiten. Ich kann es nur jedem empfehlen, es ist einfach super!

Die Geschichte hat eigentlich Potenzial, aber viele Dinge passieren einfach so ohne Erklärung, andere logische Entwicklungen werden aprupt abgewürgt und manche "Wendungen" passen einfach nicht. Hier wurde krampfhaft versucht eine durchsichtige Story mit Gewalt um Überraschungen anzureichern. Dazu wird die Entwicklung der Galaxie mit kurzen Einspielern ohne Info angekündigt und muss dann an Terminals gelesen werden. Ach, und was hat es mit den Artefakten genau auf sich?
[b]Grafik[/b]
Für damalige Verhältnisse war die Grafik gut und ist auch nicht schlecht gealtert. Das Spiel kann auch in 2023 noch gut gespielt werden. Einzig die Vielfalt der Modelle könnte deutlich größer sein. Trotzdem ist die Grafik stimmig und weckt eine tolle Space Athmosphäre.
[b]Gameplay[/b]
Hier kommen wir zum Besten und Schlechtesten des Spiels. Das Fliegen des Raumschiffs macht Spaß, die Upgrade verändern das Schiff spürbar und die Kämpfe sind anfangs packend. Und dann stellt sich die Ernüchterung ein. Jedes System ist gleich aufgebaut. Man kommt durch ein Gate rein, vor einem ein Planet im Hintergrund, davor eine Handelsstation, links und rechts Asteroiden. Manchmal noch ein Bergbauasteroid und Forschungsstationen - die man außerhalb der Story nicht betreten kann. Jedes System ist gleich und bietet kein Wiedererkennungswert oder Orientierungspunkte.
Manchmal gibt es zufällige Piraten, manche Systeme von Piraten besetzt und können befreit werden und in manchen gibt es Artefakte zur Verbesserung des Schiffs. Besetzte Systeme und Systeme mit den Artefakten sind auf der Karte markiert, damit kommt kein Forscherdran auf. Im System ist die Position der Artefakte im Bergbauasteroiden markiert. Reinspringen, hinfliegen, einsaugen - weiter. Okay, manche Systeme sind gesperrt. Nebendran die Sidequest machen, schon kommt man rein.
Dazu sind Upgrades fix, können also nachträglich nicht angepasst werden. Man entscheided sich für einen Weg, baut das immer gleiche Schiff aus und springt von Artefakt zu Artefakt, erfarmt verbesserte Module und folgt der Story. Eigentlich sind es 15 Stunden vom Gleichen mit einigen wenigen überraschenden Abwechselungen. Verschiedene Schiffe wie in Freelancer wäre für mich die bessere Wahl gewesen. Weniger Systeme mit mehr Charakter auch.
[b]Fazit[/b]
Es gibt wenige Raumschiffspiele mit Story. Darkstar One ist nicht schlecht gealtert und hat mich zumindest für die 15 Stunden nicht schlecht unterhalten. Auch wenn viel Potential verschwendet wurde, so ist es doch einen Blick wert. Nicht für 9,99€, aber im Sale für 0,99€ - 2,99€ macht man nichts falsch.
Ziemlich alt und immer noch ziemlich gut. Wing Commander Fans können gleich zugreifen. Die Weltraumballerei macht auch heute noch ziemlich Laune und das Upgrade System ist mal was Neues. Leider ist das Spiel etwas zu sehr gestreckt worden. Money Grinding kann nervig werden durch die sich ständig wiederholenden Aufträge und den recht hohen Preisen im späteren Spielverlauf. Keine Minimap. Grausliche Steuerung in engen Passagen bei den Planeten und Asteroiden Flügen. Controller Support ist dürftig und man greift freiwillig zur Maus und Tastatur. Aber dennoch zu empfehlen. So viele Spiele dieser Art gibt es ja leider nicht mehr.
Best game of it's kind IMO.

DarkStar One is a space exploring TPS featuring a very advanced ship,a pretty large map with many events to find and do,a decent story but also a pretty good combat system.
Graphically,it looks pretty ok,some of the effects could be a bit better or polished and there are parts when the bloom is sort of overly saturated,but it's quite enjoyable flying around checking out different planets,space stations or some of the asteroids you can checkout. On a sidenote,all the different zones also have their own vibes and colors,so that's a nice touch to the general looks.
Sound wise,it is pretty average,nothing really stands out or becomes jaw dropping or goose bump-inducing,but the voices are done quite well,localization and surround is decent,overall,not bad.
Now as gameplay goes,here it gets interesting,cause the ship develops as you find some crystals that you spend after on developing either engines,hull or turrets,all of them with different benefits,luckily at the end of the game you can get all the upgrades,so you can choose whatever you like.
All the factions have their own weapon that has different levels or a rarer version you can find from missions or pirate captains,some are kinetic or energy based,some are explosive or barely do damage,but have different effects. Gadgets and ship abilities can be upgraded and unlocked as you progress,opening up more zones and different tactics,even getting to the point where you can take down cruisers all alone,but that is pretty late in-game.
Most stations have some random missions or you can just trade or be a pirate and shoot down police patrols or merchants,all of them turning you slowly into either an outlaw or a trader or just be a jack of all trades.
Now,some of the story missions are harder than they should be,especially the two station defense ones,where you control a turret. Those are way too hard,might even seem broken,especially the latter one,but besides that,it's pretty fun and balanced.
Didn't encounter too many bugs,very minor ones at least,where a drone was stuck so I booped it a bit with the ship and fixed it,a conversation stayed on,seemed neverending but again,hit his ship with mine and it was fixed,so nothing game-breaking from my experience.
Overall,for the price it has,it's definitely worth a try,it is a good space exploring game,with some unique features and moments with nothing to really complain about.
