Can't say enough good things about the music, but if you're not into djent/metal guitars this will do little to change your mind.

Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a good game all around. Just a heads up, this game is HARD. Even by shmup standards, this game is still quite difficult (even on it's lowest difficulty). I look forward to Danmaku Unlimited 4 WYVER ULTRA. Get this if you like shmups of the bullet hell variety.

[h1]Finally, a SHUMP With a Bisexual Color Scheme[/h1]
Fun game, and overall a more deep and challenging game than the second one. The scoring system is built around grazing bullets which is a real daredevil kind of thing to focus on. You have two game modes, one where killing enemies takes their bullets off the screen, and one where grazing enemy bullets builds up your hyper mode. It's a fun scoring system that adds a lot of challenge to the game.

My biggest issue with it is that the different ship and laser types are tied to challenges such as "No damage a boss on hard", and "Beat the true last boss TLB". Both of those actions essentially are asking you to pull off a 1CC which is absurd of an ask for the player to pull off just to experience more of the content. This game's easy mode is harder than DU2's hard mode was! You unlock extra continues by playing more runs but that feels like a lame thing to unlock compared to different ways to play the game, and it doesn't help with getting a 1CC obviously.

So yeah, you really only have three ship types to play around with for the vast majority of the game. Kinda annoying, but it doesn't take away from the game being a deep shmup with a fun scoring system. Just be aware if you're a novice player that you will get your ass beat without seeing any new content for a while.

You are a god if you can 1cc this on graze mode true.
To even get through Graze levels on default difficulty, even with maximum lives, one has to chant to the old gods using Mongolian Throat singing, while aligning one's Chakras, whilst also performing a blood sacrifice to the patron saint of Danmaku.

TLDR: This game requires a zen like flow state for the hardest difficulties, but the feeling is worth it.

Game is pretty good, but the technical execution aspect just plain simply sucks.

Controller native support just doesn't work. Tried multiple configurations. Just use xinput man. Just use it just do it man just do it.

Resolution must be hacked into resolutions.txt manually. Just iterate through monitor resolutions, and report them. The game actually works just fine in arbitrary resolutions including full 4K, you could've just allowed windowed mode resizing instead of locking that.

Visuals are just way too much. Style over function. Prioritize function over style next time.
Trance flash needs to be visually toned down.
Autobomb has a problem where you just lose track visually of what's going on.
The straight lazer is pink, which is the same color as bullets.

Just a big list of visual clarity problems here.

The previous game is one of my favourite shoot em ups so I had great expectations for the sequel.
I prefer danmaku 2, but this one is solid too and it's probably more accessible (except the last boss who is insane).

It's mind boggling that this game has been done by just one person. I hope he develops a new one.

Danmaku Unlimited 3 is the misunderstood and somewhat eccentric child from a marriage between a Touhou-style and Cave-like arcade STG; this however does not mean that DU3 doesn't have its place, because it most certainly does... and what a joy it is to behold.

DU3's greatest strengths lie with its presentation and ability to effortlessly fuse together two very different forms of STG's. Touhou-inspired shmups tend to focus on boss fights with fancy and mesmerizing bullet patterns -- or spell cards -- while Cave-like arcade STG's tend to focus more on chaotic levels with plenty of bombs, hypers, anarchy, and chest-thumping music from the beginning up until the very end of each stage. For reasons which escape me however, DU3's presentation take some time to appreciate; both enemies and even stage backgrounds may seem bland at first, but they're so full of easily overlooked detail.

DU3 is one of those games where the more you play, the more you see, and the more you appreciate. Which is a pity really, because I see many players picking DU3 up and putting it down mere hours later thinking that it is either too dull, not exciting enough, or doesn't offer anything extraordinary.

What was love-on-first-sight however was DU3's extremely sharp visuals. Both your hitbox and enemy bullets are extremely clear and easy to distinguish from the never-ending chaos and destruction; and critically, complex bullet patterns employ well thought out color palettes which make identifying individual sub-patterns a breeze. Even when patterns begin to aggressively overlap on higher difficulties it is always easy to distinguish one pattern from another and to quickly identify and establish an escape route; this means that spell cards are often extremely fair despite being outlandishly difficult at times.

It isn't just the boss fights which shine in DU3 however; stages themselves are very well thought out with well choreographed enemy formations and attack patterns complemented by beautiful level design and harmonizing special effects and music.

Behind all this grace and beauty however is an immensely hardcore and punishing game, even by STG standards. For starters, DU3 doesn't really believe in invulnerability frames; you can get hit repeatedly so quickly and lose all your extends in absolutely no-time that you'll be scratching your head first in confusion, then disbelief, and ultimately awe. Next up, DU3 employs an all-or-nothing approach to scoring: your score multiplier -- which does NOT counter stop -- is increased by grazing bullets, which is fine, but this multiplier can be carried all the way from the second you start, through boss fights, to the end-of-stage scorecard. What this means is getting hit just once (which resets your multiplier all the way back to zero) or even using a bomb (which cuts it in half) is more often than not run-ending when playing for score, as a multiplier of 10,000 becomes a very big deal when clearing even just one additional pattern.

DU3 also has a habit of augmenting its mesmerizing bullet patterns with speed and this results in one heck of an adrenaline-rush; not only do you need to be able to work well with Touhou-style spell cards, but you're going to have to be snappy as well as boss phases transition extremely quick.

With all that said though, DU3 is still an approachable and somewhat accessible game as the easier difficulties are well balanced and will still make you feel like an absolute champion. And for those who are looking to get better, I genuinely feel that each increase in difficulty is a very natural evolution from the previous one which results in earlier difficulties being a solid foundation for the next tier up. This is a trait I'm always fond of as maintaining a certain degree of familiarity is a kind of fairness which tends to compliment what is otherwise an extremely challenging game to master.

All-in-all Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a proper danmaku in every sense of the genre and it's always delightful to see more STG's embrace the mesmerizing beauty of bullet patterns which are more typically associated with Touhou-style shmups. What an awesome game!~

I’m frankly amazed by the number of ways this game manages to be a disappointing followup to Danmaku Unlimited 2. I thought DU2 was a solid shmup, and DU3 looks cleaner and has a much cooler soundtrack. But my praise ends there.

The UI in Danmaku Unlimited 3 is broken in several places. Ship selection often doesn’t work, forcing you to play ship type A-A even when you pick other types. Pressing continue to go to the next stage sometimes plays a looping animation that delays loading. And the game repeatedly asks you to replay the tutorial since “it appears this is your first time playing,” even when it most definitely isn’t.

The gameplay takes inspiration from the worst aspects of CAVE’s mostly storied lineup. Spirit Mode, for example, adopts the cancel-on-kill mechanic from Espgaluda II Black Label, neutering the threat of most non-boss enemies in DU3 to the point that many stages practically play themselves if you sit in the middle and hold fire. A variation of the awful laser wheels from DaiFukkatsu that nobody wanted to see ever again also show up in multiple stages here, along with some rather poorly-communicated wall interactions that belong in a horizontal shooter, not a bullet hell. And the bosses have too many phases, many of which drag on for way too long.

All in all, this game is only mostly functional and only partly fun. I would recommend other shmups over this one any day of the week. My personal favorites on Steam are Mushihimeama, Gunvein, and Blue Revolver, all danmaku games like DU3. Devil Blade Reboot is also great if you want something simpler, and Eigengrau is an underrated puzzle-shmup hybrid that might also be worth your time.

Windows 10 here, the game crashes on startup no matter the launch settings. Judging by other reviews and discussion posts I am not the only one with this problem. I've tried changing my display settings, disconnecting my second monitor, turning on compatibility settings for the exe, running in administrator, everything. I was really looking forward to trying this out, so I hope the dev can patch it.

EDIT: I have now gotten the game to work on an Nvidia GPU and it's clearly a great game, so I'll change the thumbs down to a thumbs up, but I'm leaving the original review text to warn other AMD users that they might run into issues.

(It's no fun being a contrarian, but I gotta do this.)

I want to love every shmup I've never played before, especially since I've rediscovered my love for this neglected genre after burning myself out on AAA movie-games, walking sims, Simon-says mechanics and all-around boring non-gameplay-fests that define modern gaming. It's been such a blast, I've even held myself to purchasing shmups at full retail price as often as possible to show my support, including recent compilations, new indie releases and M2's PS4-exclusive imports. This game is among those I bought at retail cost and no, regardless of my review, I'm not refunding it.

But [i]DU3[/i] falls short for me for two huge reasons I keep coming back to play a game: the audio design and the art design.

Whether or not you like the genre of music they went for, Blankfield's soundtrack pummels the ears from the word GO. This [b]trve cvlt[/b] instrumental metal music amuses at first, but quickly becomes tiring on the ears. And considering how draining an intense shmup session can be at higher difficulties (let alone multiple runs), music that aims to exhaust the ears doesn't help the player... it hinders them. And even if the style is up your alley, where's the memorable melodies that characterize indie shmups? Where's the exciting panache of an [i]Andro Dunos II[/i], a [i]Ginga Force[/i], an [i]Eschatos[/i], a [i]Rolling Gunner[/i], or a [i]Blue Revolver?[/i] All those shumps contain musical earworms that pop in my head at random, which is surely indicative of higher art. But the best I can recall here is the drummer's blast beats during a boss battle. (Not exactly a musical revelation.) Even worse, when you swap in your own music or turn it off entirely, you'll notice how weak the sound effects in this game are. They just simply don't have the impact they should. Frankly, they sound wimpy. And that's bad in an action game.

Speaking of, Doragon advertises this as a "Classic Japanese Bullet Hell Action" game... yet for all its polish, it lacks all the aspects of great art design that gave those Japanese classics the status they rightfully deserve. Strictly taking away the bullet hell part, you're telling me that [b]visually[/b] this reminds you of a CAVE game, a Raizing game, or a Psikyo game? This reminds you of a Taito, a Toaplan, a Treasure, or even a Seibu Kaihatsu? Then where's the tasty art designs at? Where's the wild explosions? Where's the color and definition? Where's [i]the style[/i] in this game?! I mean, it's not like they have to plaster the game with fan-service-y waifus, but [i]DU3[/i] has a sterile, comparably dull visual design. This doesn't remind me of Japanese shmups, it reminds me of EastAsiaSoft ones!

Ultimately, both of those issues clash rather than unify, which (to me) is a pitiful waste of good gameplay. There's a bitter irony that this game really is the opposite of AAA development; whereas big-budget titles effortlessly nail every single thing except a consistently satisfying gameplay loop, [i]Danmaku Unlimited 3[/i] gets said loop right, but nothing else. (In that sense, it reminds me of another fun game with unappealing aesthetics: [i]Pixeljunk Monsters.[/i]) And games like that remind me more than ever of how important [b]all[/b] the elements of a game are, otherwise even the target audience themselves won't stick around for the long haul.

So, check out a no-commentary, full-game run on YT first. See if the style appeals to you and go from there.

As a casual bullet hell enjoyer I always find myself coming back to Danmaku Unlimted 3 more than any other in the genre.

The grazing mechanic to build meter for more score and to help clear screens is just too fun!

The visual designs (though scary at times!) are always beautiful to looks at!

The music is always wonderful!

Though most of my time is on switch. I own this game on pc and now ps4 and think its worth all three purchases over the years.

I want to recommend touhou to everyone, but there's so much work involved in getting it to run

This is like that, but with none of the work. If you play 1 modern shmup just to judge the genre so you can tell me to shut up, it should be this one.

I really enjoyed Danmaku Unlimited 2, but many of the elements I liked about 2 have been stripped away 'for beginners'. Yet, I find Danmaku Unlimited 3 far less beginner friendly.

The game play is roughly the same as the previous. You have a regular shot and a more powerful shot with slower movement. Plus, bombs that serve as shields if hit. Finally, you have a Trance/hyper shot that fires automatically once the meter builds from grazing (getting close to enemy projectiles) or absorbing their 'shadow' when canceled typically from destroying the enemy ship that fired them.

It's the automatic part that feels bad. It can go off when it really is of no use unless you purposely avoid building up that last little bit. Which is less beginner friendly than just allowing the player to release it on command. And far more annoying to have to work around it.

Danmaku Unlimited 2 already had boss battles with more and longer lasting phases than I prefer. Danmaku Unlimited 3 feels like there's more and they are longer. I don't know if that's true, but I do find my mind wandering as I wait for the next phase. Sure, there's bullet patterns to dodge. But I either know how to dodge it or I really don't. The game forcing me to run through it for several more seconds than most bullet hells I've played only changes that I get tired of waiting for the next phase to start. And I'd think I was doing something wrong as how slow damage was applied if I didn't have to struggle to setup my controls.

And struggle I did. I'm weird in that I like to use an 8-button Sega Genesis controller when I can. Danmaku Unlimited 3 doesn't allow me to without the use of a MayFlash Magic-S Pro 2. Which isn't ideal, but some STGs don't even let me get that far. However, remapping keys is strange in this game. The beam shot doesn't work unless I hold down the regular shot and the beam shot at the same time. Pause is what's listed to fire bombs. And the only other thing that can be re-mapped is the menu button. It took me a good while to release I could manually use bombs. I was beginning to wonder why the game called the bombs at all since up until that point, I thought they just let you take extra hits and they didn't even create smaller explosion closer to your ship like some shmups do that also have this feature.

All in all, I can't recommend Danmaku Unlimited 3. If feels like a big step back from Danmaku Unlimited 2, and just claims that step back was in the name of being beginner friendly. Which I don't think it is. As I found Danmaku Unlimited 2 to also be a tad less difficult on the Easy setting. Allowing novice players to get to play more than the first couple stages.

I'm not a very good shmup player admittedly, but I have a very tough time getting to Stage 3 on Easy after an hour of play. Where actual shmups I would recommend to beginner players, I'm usually working on beating the final boss (on Easy) if not beating the the game. And Danmaku Unlimited 3 does not inspire me to continue to try either. I'm certainly not enticed to unlock different firing modes as deep into the game as it wants me to unlock them.

Game crashes during startup, can't play it at all. I meet all requirements. Posted in the discussion forum, went to developer's website looking for contact info, searched internet for solutions. Can't get any assistance or any idea why its crashing. Would love to play the game but its pretty bad if I can't even open it or get a response for help. There are several threads in the discussion forum with the same issue going back to 2017 and earlier, nobody ever gets a reply or any assistance. Dev doesn't seem to care about helping people or at least telling them what the issue is.

Great music, forgiving beginner mode, auto bomb that can be switched on or off, different guns to unlock. The popcorn enemy sections are a bit of a waste in the first 3 levels as nothing interesting really happens aside from mid bosses but the bosses themselves have like 9 different phases each so it makes up for it.

DU3 & RefRain have some great energetic, yet chill vibes; despite, a thousand gawddamm laser bullets being sprayed in your face. Sure, I may be huffing and puffing and holding my breathe and exhaling and trying to stay focused all at the same time, but somehow in games like DU3 & RefRain... and maybe it's all the psychedelic colors... I become utterly aware of all movement and emotion, and when a bullet pattern completely overwhelms me, I exhale and let my mind try to navigate out of death knowing that it is coming whether that be now or tomorrow. These games allow me to tap into that self-aware mortality factor that I've experienced sliding down a mountain face, holding a newborn in my arms, and that one time I tripped as a young boy while holding a sharp walking stick that punctured my shirt collar and grazed my neck, slightly slitting it. (Disclaimer: a safer alternative to get to this state is 15 mins of meditation, if you can let your thoughts be).

So back to my review. This game does this for me.

Looking at the discussion board, the developer took the time to read the threads and improve a few aspects. One can practice the Bosses if one reaches said Boss. This is more logical e than having to beat a boss to practice the boss which never made sense to me in any shmup.

Music is great. Tho at times it may get a bit heavy and become too much background noise, (too forced one could say), to make a scene more dramatic and action-packed. But for 99% of my time I enjoyed the soundtrack.

Something I dislike about this bullet hell and a few others is a few of the bosses take forever to defeat due to the numerous phases they end up having. I am hoping the True Last Boss doesn't end up being a 20-30minute slog, but I get the feeling that's where this is heading.

Stage 5 enemies on Easy are the same enemies from previous stages but now they have more life. I would have preferred different enemy assets. It threw me for a loop on my first encounter wondering why the enemies were taking longer to kill, and it had me questioning if everything was invincible. There are also Fat Laser Beam enemies that are neigh impossible to kill. I've only killed one with using trance mode the whole time it was on screen, and it finally blew up at the very bottom of the screen.

Alright, that's all I got atm.

This shmup rocks. It has an excellent visual design, with darker backgrounds contrasted with neon bullet colors; it has a very crisp, clean, dark futuristic look. The music is intense; it's metal with a djent and prog vibe with electro mixed in and a bit of drum and bass; very well produced stuff that will really get your blood pumping. The way the music flows with the action of the levels and background feels almost like a visualiser or music video; it's very well put together. The level design has a great flow the boss bullet patterns are mesmerising. The player's weapons are probably some of the best looking in the genre. Highly recommended. 10/10

Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a bullet hell shmup that stands out with its bright, glossy visuals and catchy soundtrack. This series of shmups remains one of my favorites and 3 separates itself off from not only DU2, but also from a lot of shmups I've played in general.

[h1] PATTERNS [/h1]

Danmaku Unlimited 3 sets itself apart from other shmups I've played by having pretty unique bullet patterns that are generally focused more on tight precision than reaction time. The game loves to force you into a small corner of the screen and demand tiny inputs inside little amounts of screen space, and then suddenly demand you move out of that area into another tight zone. Lasers are used often by both enemies and bosses and the game likes to throw bullets at you from multiple directions at once. There's a few waves in the game I felt were a little silly, and I'm not big on enemies that have too much health to kill on time, which in later stages is abused often, but I haven't come across any pattern that didn't make sense or felt unfair. The bullet patterns are a big selling point of this game to me, and it does things very creatively.

[h1] DIFFICULTY [/h1]

There are 4 difficulties and 2 modes to play through, and I want to acknowledge that the difficulty of DU3 is a *huge* increase from the second game, the beginner recommended medium difficulty was even surprisingly rough and felt more comparable to the second game's third highest difficulty.

[h1] PRESENTATION [/h1]

It's crazy how much visual splendor this game gets away with while still being perfectly visible and playable. Ships have large explosion and everything has a glow to it, the backgrounds you play on are gorgeous and everything is *very* colorful. Despite all this, the bullets are *never* obscured by the background or the other ships and I never had any trouble seeing what I was doing, and this is something I noticed bullet hell games struggle with sometimes. The music is absolutely incredible and feels kinda cinematic and high energy fitting the intense battles you're dealing with.

[h1] CONCLUSION [/h1]

If there's a bullet hell shmup you should play and might have missed, it's Danmaku Unlimited 3. The game does what it wants to perfectly, and is a solid entry to anyone's bullet hell library

I'm pretty new to shmups. I've been playing Crimzon Clover WI, and I like it a lot. I 1cc'd the novice modes without too much difficulty and am working on arcade original. This game is different, I can't clear the easiest difficulty in Spirit mode. Stage 5 gets me every time. I guess the design of the 2 games is different enough that this one seems significantly more difficult, at least to me. I've heard that this game is more like a touhou game than a cave shooter

If you are a shmup fan and you don't own this game already, ask yourself one simple question -- WHY ?

Kickass music tracks and solid action makes this one of the most rewarding and engaging vertical shoot 'em up experience of all time. Sure its made by a small team, maybe just one guy, i have no idea but that only proves how much talented these guys are. Can't wait for Doragon Entertainment to announce new shmups in their release pipeline soon. And i sincerely hope that happens sooner than expected by us ardent fans.

Couldn't get this game to work since I bought it. I tried installing it in at least 5 different machines, none of them could get the game to work. Tried to contact the developer, ask around in the shmup community, but no one knows why my copy refuses to launch. If you buy it and can't get it to work, get a refund ASAP.

This was my first bullet-hell/shmup experience (beyond toying with Ikaruga because I'd heard it was good and, y'know, like space invaders and ♥♥♥♥), and it was a very good choice in that respect. DU3 features two modes, Spirit and Graze, the former being designed in such a way as to really help beginners grasp a lot of ideas that will serve them well in any shmup they choose to play in the future (it's got an Easy and Medium difficulty, whereas Graze offers only Hard and "TRUE").

I've also heard that Spirit is fun for people who are good at shmups too, but I'll never be able to speak to that.

If you've got an itch to get into this unique brand of emotional self-abuse, grab this game and start of on Easy, moving up as you start to feel more comfortable. It's a fun enough way to feel bad about yourself.

Danmaku Unlimited 3 represents a simple, but solid and highly enjoyable foray into SHMUPs. This is a game with tight controls, clear visuals, great hitboxes (on bullets with sharp outlines but also the centroid of your ship), and an adrenaline-pumping heavy metal soundtrack with tons of DJENT! This is a short game, and it's a pretty hard game. You have 4 difficulties in Spirit Mode with some easy options, but only 2 quite hard difficulties in Graze Mode (which is already harder so it's double harder). It's a fun game, you fly around in a spaceship and shoot other spaceships. If you don't really like SHMUPs, this game will not change your mind though.

Details: Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a vertical shmup without any terrain or set hazards. It has inconsequential backdrops, and every stage is basically the same except for enemies, midbosses, and the bosses. It is similar to many Arcade-style SHMUPs and the bullet patterns do become semi-crazy, but not nearly as crazy as some other games on Steam or in arcades. The scoring AND the survival is entirely based around "grazing" bullets by getting fairly close but without getting hit. When enemies are destroyed all the time in Spirit Mode, and some of the time in Graze Mode, their current on-screen bullets are turned into harmless blue spirits. You can touch these to gain points and fill up your super meter... but by getting close enough to touch them you also graze them. Absorbing tons of spirits is the key to a high score, because you can use your super meter to enter Trance Mode and do massive damage while swimming in yummy golden gems and points. However this gameplay design has an unfortunate caveat: If you play poorly and don't graze much (because you're trying to survive), then you have no chance of even a remotely decent score and no ability to use Trance Mode very often at all. It's very all-or-nothing.

The art is clear, the music is nice, and the game is very straightforward and fair to the player. Generally speaking it's clear what you want to do, and clear what you did wrong when you get hit. That said, this game is extremely difficult on the hardest mode (Graze Mode / True Difficulty) and it is not for the faint of heart. I can't 1cc that level of difficulty but I still enjoy this game and recommend it.

Clean visuals, versatile game modes for a variety of skill levels. Enemy design is a bit generic but the player ship has some nice details and effects. Minimal random elements in bullet patterns. Decent practice options with stage select and boss select modes, only ting really missing is save states. No built in replay save system drags it down a bit though. Bullet graze scoring system breaks down a bit in easy difficulty. Demands a lot of computer power for a 2D bullet hell game.

At first I thought the repeating background makes it boring, but that only happens in Spirit Mode where the enemies will cancel bullets on death, leaving a lot of empty space. However, this doesn't happen in Graze Mode because the lingering bullets can keep you occupied. Spirit Mode is still difficult though during boss fight.

Getting more credits feels quite grindy. 1 extra credit after first game over, and then subsequent extra credits on every tenth game played. Doesn't matter though, still need to grind for 1CC practice anyway.

One technical issue is that on gamepad, you can't move diagonally using the D-pad. A workaround is to emulate the D-pad to arrow keys in Steam Controller Configuration for this game.
