I would have to say that this game is the best out of the developer's logic games series. The game is about making numbers add up to the given requirements, which allows for more interesting combinations. The operations are carried out from left to right, allowing multiplication cells to create asymmetric totals. The only issue I have is that the game does not give instant feedback on whether a choice is right, and there is no reset button when you find out you do mess out (exiting and re-entering works though). I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a puzzle game to play.
Pretty fun, with some surprisingly complex levels.
Less enjoyable than Hexcell, but still pretty neat idea.
The puzzles are well made and challenging, but the UI is too sparse for the logic required. I like a minimalist UI, but some of these required notes.
good game
Feels like a downgrade compared to the other games the developer has made, which is a shame because the last Hexcells game was excellent and I enjoyed Squarecells as well. The first 30ish puzzles were fun to try, but after a certain point it felt more like trying to solve the whole thing at once and doing a guess and check of the whole grid for every scenario until you solve it, which doesn't really do it for me. Also wasn't a big fan of the design choices this time, specifically the lack of a reset button (unless I just missed it somewhere?) which only made things feel more tedious.
I cleared the first 40 puzzles before it got too annoying and I just looked up a guide for 41-49 to be done with it, though I did clear the final puzzle on my own.
Not so good if you don't like maths, but for me this might be Brown's best Cells game. Not as difficult as SquareCells by a long shot, as the puzzles have no fail state (you don't get mistakes - you can click, undo, and click again as often as you please). Still challenging enough though, especially the bits where a row of squares has different totals at each end, so you need to consider order of operations. The game eases you into the bigger puzzles expertly, and there are enough of them to keep you occupied for several hours.
It's great, just like Hexcells!
Very decent logic puzzle game. I believe it is never necessary to guess (where you lock in an option and keep playing to see if it pans out, then reset if it doesn't). I admit I've done that once or twice in some medium levels, but I stopped doing it eventually and got by on pure logic, even for the final levels. Sometimes the logic goes deep (is any of these numbers necessary for every possible solution? Then it must be 'on'. What are the min and max number of tiles I need to get to the total, and does that eliminate anything?) Slowly but surely you will be able to map out your certainties, and to me this is a very satisfying way to solve puzzles.
Nice little puzzle game
Really neutral on this one. It's quite satisfying to solve the puzzle and figure it out, but levels rarely allow you to get into 'flow' of actually SOLVING the puzzle. I would say around 25% of this game is just a tutorial or demonstration, 25% has some really good levels, 25% is average, and another 25% is just extremely hard and frustrating. The difficulty curve is very nonlinear and I found myself just jumping back and fourth. There were a couple levels that I had to go back to and had a great time, and others that I spent multiple days and sessions trying to figure out what the 'path' to solving a level was and couldn't crack it. When looking up a guide for those levels...it felt like I was already close enough to the solution, like "didn't I try that combination already?" Which is a big letdown.
You'll know if you can ignore this.
This game won't make you CROSS!
Macht Spaß.
Good brain exercise.
I was waiting to review this until I finished the game, but that's taking longer than I planned as it's rather a slog to get through. I love this dev's work on Hexcells and was hoping to enjoy this one just as much, but sadly it just hasn't clicked. Perhaps I am just missing something or don't have the vision, but every level in this game feels like pressing buttons with your fingers crossed hoping eventually you'll find the right combination. Yes, there are hints which should give you an idea how to solve the puzzle, but I found almost all of the hints have too many ways to solve them to the point I just have to guess and hope I picked right, undoing and redoing my work over and over until I find the correct way. I almost never have an "aha" moment where everything clicks into place, instead I just stumble into the right way after banging my head against a wall of 20 minutes.
Now perhaps other people can look 25 moves in the future and keep all those numbers in their head, but I can't and found this game to be a practice in frustration and boredom. What might have helped me is a "locked in" state for blocks that you know have to be in an on or off state.
Fun game. I'd recommend taking screenshots and drawing on them to keep tracks of your thoughts but this isn't really needed until the last few levels.
The difficulty is nice and ramps up, but doesn't become unreasonable and the logic process is enjoyable.
Another solid entry in the Cells series, it's quite different from usual. Doing some more maths is fun, though having the full panel shown can feel overwhelming at first, and likely why a number of people complain having to guess when it's not necessary. It's a bit harder to focus on what needs to be solved first.
It can feel a bit more like a puzzle lockbox with sliding parts.
this is way more chill, the game doesnt restart everytime you fail, although i miss the stress. This is also leagues easier than games like Hexcells
I like this game a lot.
You should play it.
The difficulty curve is a bit too spiky toward the end, but overall this was a very satisfying puzzle experience.

CrossCells, developed and published by Matthew Brown, is a brilliant puzzle game that builds upon the foundations of his previous titles like Hexcells and SquareCells while introducing new mechanics that refresh the gameplay experience. At its core, CrossCells is a logic-based puzzle game that uses a grid system infused with numeric clues, but what sets it apart is its clever integration of new cell types and constraints that demand a higher level of reasoning and adaptability from players. The game caters to fans of cerebral challenges, offering a blend of accessibility and complexity that keeps players engaged through a wide range of puzzles.
The gameplay revolves around interpreting numbers that indicate how many cells in a given row, column, or area need to be filled or marked, but CrossCells adds depth by incorporating cross-shaped patterns and new cell behaviors that complicate the logical deductions. Unlike traditional grid puzzles, the presence of these unique cross cells requires players to think beyond straightforward patterns and consider interactions between different sections of the grid simultaneously. This dynamic creates a fresh puzzle-solving rhythm that is both satisfying and intellectually stimulating. The puzzles gradually increase in difficulty, making the learning curve smooth and encouraging players to develop increasingly sophisticated strategies.
One of CrossCells’ most impressive qualities is how it seamlessly blends minimalistic design with challenging mechanics. The visual presentation is clean and uncluttered, using simple lines and a calming color palette to ensure that players remain focused on the puzzle rather than being distracted by excessive graphical elements. The UI is intuitive, allowing smooth interactions whether on PC or touchscreen, with easy marking and unmarking of cells, as well as helpful toggles that assist in managing more complex grids. This thoughtful interface design contributes significantly to the game’s enjoyable pacing and accessibility.
The auditory experience in CrossCells complements its gameplay perfectly. The soundtrack features subtle, ambient tunes that foster a contemplative mood ideal for puzzle-solving. Sound effects are understated yet effective, providing clear feedback for player actions such as placing or removing marks, which adds to the tactile satisfaction of progressing through each challenge. This careful attention to sound design reinforces the immersive, meditative atmosphere that the game cultivates, encouraging longer play sessions without fatigue.
CrossCells boasts a generous number of puzzles, providing ample content to keep players engaged for hours. The puzzles are well-crafted, ranging from simple introductory levels to highly complex scenarios that require careful analysis and patience. The increasing complexity demands a mastery of logic and pattern recognition, making each completed puzzle feel rewarding and motivating players to push their limits further. The game also supports multiple difficulty tiers, catering both to newcomers looking for an accessible entry point and to veteran puzzle enthusiasts seeking a serious mental workout.
In summary, CrossCells is a masterful logic puzzle game that successfully innovates within a familiar genre by introducing fresh mechanics and maintaining a polished, user-friendly experience. Matthew Brown’s expertise in crafting intricate yet approachable puzzles shines through, making CrossCells an essential title for fans of brain teasers and logic games. Its minimalist design, engaging soundtrack, and thoughtfully paced challenges combine to create a deeply satisfying and rewarding puzzle experience. Whether you’re a longtime puzzle aficionado or a curious newcomer, CrossCells offers an enriching journey that sharpens the mind and delights the senses.

I'd give this a 7/10. It's interesting and some of the puzzles are great, but I prefer the developer's other puzzle games.
My big gripe with this one is that, particularly in the last few levels, it really seems like you just have to guess and check and there's no way to logic your way through. The UI isn't really set up for that; there's no saving states and no undo button. The last two levels I was stumped on (42 and 44) it felt like the fastest way to solve them was just by writing a solver in Python which was interesting but not really was I was looking for.
Everything was fine until multiplication comes to play, then everything is getting more challenging. Nice but, It's gonna fry my brain. 1 Puzzle a day is enough exercise I think.
If you love math or like challenge, definitely a must grab. If you're looking something similar to Hexcells, then it's probably not for you.
I love Hexcells to death, but CrossCells I find really annoying, and I think I won't finish it.
Visually, it's really obnoxious. There's a wavy effect that follows your mouse that makes things hard to read until they stabilize. When you mark a cell as not-wanted, it fades to white, so on some levels it's hard to even remember where they are. Might be a HDR issue, but they become completely invisible when right-clicked.
As for the game merits, they're just kind of annoying constrained problems. Beyond level 25, it becomes hard to even keep in your head all of the constraints you're optimizing for. As a result, you're kind of exploring potential solutions, but due to the above visual annoyance, exploring options is annoying.
I'm not finding the fun here, sadly.

Not easy to 100%, but the puzzles are good
Unlike the other puzzle games by Matthew Brown, I can't recommend this one. Unlike Hexcells and Squarecells where there was a clear chain of logic you could follow, the logic in this one very often comes down to long chains of "let's see what happens if I mark this space". That isn't much fun to play though. Not really my cup of tea, although I think his other games are brilliant.
Minimalistic and challenging.
The actual puzzles are fun but the weird blurry/wavy effect on cursor you cannot disable is completely unnecessary and distracting.

A delicate Sudoku-like mini puzzle game.
Love the ripple effect.
Compared to other games by Matthew Brown, CrossCells is less stressful in that making a mistake doesn’t immediately punish you. Instead, the irritation comes from the fact that the “logic” of many of these puzzles is never fully transparent to the player. From what I can tell, marking “x0” as the first cell in a row or column doesn’t create a valid equation regardless of any other cells selected. But you wouldn’t know until you try to work out the rest of the puzzle and find that the game won’t give you credit for your solution. There’s a handful of cases where I was nearly done with a puzzle except for one or two incorrect results, and while toggling cells to try to fix those, the puzzle suddenly lit up to indicate I completed it, then faded away to the next screen before I could take in the whole board to understand the solution I stumbled upon. It’s the feeling of the designer giving you token congratulations at overcoming their clever riddle before ushering you along to the next brain-teaser. I put in my token effort to unlock all the achievements and then moved on.

You don't need trial and error, but the game needed an undo button.
overall very good.
can recommend it.
Great logic puzzle game, Matthew Brown has a banger on his hand.
100% recommend as the puzzles stretch you math skills.
Interesting puzzle concept: you can activate or deactivate cells and must satisfy all the constraints.
I found the logical path for most puzzle. Not sure there is one for every puzzle.
About 3 hours to complete.
Recommended since the price is adequate.
Pros:
- Puzzle start easy but get quite challenging;
- Rules are simple and well explained;
- Levels aren't inaccessible until you finish other levels.
Cons:
- QoL - you do not have a cancel/previous command/button to cancel your last moves. You must do it manually by clicking the cells. This is VERY annoying when you are advancing by trial and error;
- QoL - I would prefer if left and right clicks were inverted by default;
- Levels aren't inaccessible until you finish other levels - so you can skip ahead miss some rule explanation (they are intuitive anyway).

I played this game, getting through the puzzles with some trial and error, and thought it was okay.
Then I replayed it, making sure I knew every move I made was correct before I made it, and it was amazing. Genuinely beautiful puzzle design that still blows me away with how intuitive it is. I came here from playing hexcells by the same dev, and I'm honestly not sure which is better. Absolutely worth it, especially when it's on sale.
Doesn't surpass Hexcells for me, but I found it an enjoyable brain-burner for an afternoon. For these simple logic puzzles, I think that's all you need. A simple rule-set presented with Brown's signature style makes this a lovely way to spend an evening or afternoon. I say once you play through the Hexcells series, this is an easy recommend if you are craving more.
🥉Outro excelente jogo de puzzle de Matthew Brown!
Regras simples, apresentação clara, bonita e minimalista.
Oh dear. CrossCells is about performing math by toggling on and off simple value adjustments in order to reach target values. I found many of these puzzles frustrating at times.
I'm recommending it as I am a large fan of the math crossword puzzle genre. That said, HexCells is probably the best starting point in this dev's puzzle series.
I'm still stuck on two levels in the last set of five, after an hour of dedicated button pressing. XD
The main reason I do not recommend this game is the UI- forced light mode, sometimes you need to click on icons to do something and other times text.
There's also no save function- if you leave, you reset to the beginning of that level.
As a puzzle, it's fine. I would still highly recommend any of the developer's games in the hexcells series over this one.
For many years I've been to my grandmother's house. Be that during festivities such as Christmas or New Years or just on a typical Sunday lunch it was an excuse to meet up with the rest of the family. Aside from how the spaghetti was exquisite I remember how she would lend me a magazine with different logic puzzles for me to pass the time and not engage in the political and economical discourse my uncles were usually arguing about. The reason I mention this is that this game reminds me of those cherished memories.
CrossCells is very much a math game presented in such a way where the focus is on colouring cells appropriately similarly to the other games by Matthew. While the mathematical operations can be done by first graders, the gameplay does require a bit of observation since some of the cell related restrictions may take you by surprise and make you rethink your strategy. There were a couple of levels that I genuinely had to redo due to missing one cell or being one off and the lack of an undo button certainly wasn't pleasing.
What is though is the presentation. Like in the other cases it features a clean mix of colours neatly organized cells with Helvetica typography that is comfortable to the eyes. But in case that wasn't soothing enough a gimmick was added to the mouse movement where moving it through the screen would generate waves much like one does while moving a finger through a puddle. Couple that with calming sound effects and this game is midway into becoming a meditation practice or something in the vibes of Electroplankton.
But besides that, from its retail price and the logical challenge I can certainly recommend it and would like to request for an undo button even if the game has already come out for years. No matter if that isn’t the case, we still have the mouse movement.
Unlike the other cells games, this requires some trail and error. There is no quality of life to support that, it's incredibly frustrating to try out solutions and back track. It's a fun puzzle concept, but the game itself is inadequate.
If you find simple math to be fun, you will likely enjoy this game.
Solid puzzle game
Fun little puzzle game and the price isn't bad

Nice game,but was kinda ez
NT$ 66 for 2.6 hours. It's enough, come on. Just buy it.
Good puzzles. Many of the later stages felt like the variant Sudoku puzzles featured on Cracking the Cryptic (that's a good thing!). Contrary to what some other reviewers felt, no guessing or branching/bifurcating is required at any stage, but having a pen and paper at hand helped quite a bit.
Also, I personally liked the absence of the mistake counter for this particular Cells entry. I don't think they would have had the same utility as they do in Matthew Brown's other Cells games. In HexCells, marking a tile could provide an additional hint, so it was useful to prevent players from fully brute forcing puzzles. But here, as with more traditional pen-n-paper puzzles, all of the hints are available from the start, and puzzles aren't really brute forceable in the same way as HexCells.
I really like this game. I can't say it is as good as Hexcells, but that is a very high bar to cross, anyways. If you have completed Hexcells and want a little more, this game is definitely worth playing.
I liked previous cells games because it gave me a nice feeling of finding the right thread and slowly unravelling the whole puzzle. This game hardly got any of that and more of a trial and error type of endeavour, especially after the addition of multiplication tiles.

C'est très bien.
Another brilliant logic game from the creators of Hexcells! CrossCells offers a unique twist by combining numbers and deduction in a way that’s both intuitive and challenging. A great game to play in short bursts or to get lost in for hours.
I racked my brain for just over 5 hours perfecting this one...
There were a few levels that, when I realized I suddenly solved it, I'm unsure if it was because I figured it out logically or by luck. I certainly used logic for most, but all I know is all but one puzzle (level 47) was solved using logic.
All's that to say I don't think I can recommend this "logic" puzzle game on the account that it felt necessary to use brute force. It's a decent game nonetheless.
I must have bought this in a bundle at some point and never played it.
Little different than most "mine sweep" games. Little more math involved, but still basically a logic puzzle.
Done puzzles 1-45 so far. Took a break to post a review!
I really enjoyed it. GREAT PUZZLE GAME!!
Still, Tametsi is the best logic puzzle game in my opinion - hundreds of puzzles, some very challenging.
.
It's basic, it's easy at the start and does get more difficult.
It's a brain teaser. But don't think this is a game you can play for many many hours. It's short. Finished in under 4 hours over multiple weeks.
10/10 puzzle game
Enjoying this a lot

CrossCells by Matthew Brown achieves taking a simple concept or idea and making something fun and enjoyable out of it.
The mechanics of the game are intuitive, and each time a new mechanic is introduced, it is done in a clear and understandable manner.
The levels slowly increase in difficulty, and can become moderately complexe or time consuming to solve, yet they remain within a relatively casual range.
The visual aesthetics of the game are clean, polished, and of good quality.
CrossCells is overall a good quality, slightly challenging, and enjoyable puzzle game from Matthew Brown.
不错。
