Colt Express
Plan your hold up, adapt your scheme, get rich and get out! The game inspired from the famous train robbery boardgame!

Plan your hold up, adapt your scheme, get rich and get out! The game inspired from the famous train robbery boardgame!
It's an interesting puzzle game, with a nice memory element.
Against the AI, the game is a great replica of the physical board game - and that is all this game is.
The servers are no longer supported and there is no ability to add a second human player to any game.
Without a local 'Pass & Play' multiplayer mode, and the servers being offline - the game is fun for all of 15 minutes.
Nice concept, but a lot more should have been done with it.
2/5
Fun
Dead game. Probably best on TTS at this point.
It's a fun (board) game, but it looks like Asmodee has abandoned it. You cannot log in with your Asmodee account, the game simply freezes on the login screen. Strangely, if you browse Asmodee Digitals's games here on Steam, you won't find Colt Express in the list, so something's definitely going on with the support of this game.
You can still enjoy the single player experience, though, play through the stories of the different bandits, or play a classic game, but local multiplayer is missing, and online multiplayer doesn't work because of the server-login issue. So... in its current state, it's not really recommended.
Cant connect the online multiplayer, just use in one pc against the bots...
Dont buy it!!
the steam charts say no online player.. so dont buy, the creators abandoned this game!
It doesn't work at all. I cannot login and the game will not start.
I can see how this could be a successful board game, it's kinda fun and goofy and could be some good family fun. People aren't recommending it because the multiplayer is broken (game is no longer sold) and it lacks local multiplayer.
I think those are valid criticisms, but the game is also fun for a bit against the AI. If I ever see the board game I'll consider picking it up.
The story line is like a solitaire game, and quite entertaining. To bad you can't play this with your friends without them bying the game. To few online games have the ability to invite friends without owning the game. If the price was mutch lower it would be ok.
Multi-player is not working (game crashes). No response from Asmodee when requesting support.
Another turn based card game, but this one is made for an online community that's long since dead.
Colt Express is a cardgame/boardgame that was ported to iOS that was then ported to PC on Steam, so it kind of went from "ok" to "terrible" to "terrible on a great platform". The theme of the game is the wild west, train robberies. You're presented with a train with a number of carriages full of loot. Your hand of cards have various actions like "Loot", "Shoot another player", "move between carriages" and so on. You choose which card to play and so do your opponents. At the end of all this, count up who has the most money looted, that's the winner.
Let's talk about this as a PC game. Resolution is locked. Controls are locked. Art assets are low quality due to the iPhone heritage of the game. That's enough to disqualify this for any consideration from PC gamers.
There's two aspects of any game. The mechanics of the game, and the interface that the players have with that mechanic. Poker, for example, is about randomly generated hands that players get, and the interface is the randomly drawn paper cards. If you keep the random hand, but remove the physical cards, the game still works, but it's streamlined, more pure. That's video gaming. The best video games put the players directly against the core game mechanic. We don't love games because of their interfaces, we love them for their mechanics. The less that the interface gets in the way, the better. Video games couple the player more closely with the mechanic rather than the interface, that's why they're so popular. Think about it. The best video games have the cleanest interfaces. What makes FPS games work so well? Think about their minimal, intuitive interface.
So here, we have a boardgame/cardgame conversion, and the focus of the developers has clearly been to keep, and emulate, the annoying physical interface, without bothering to improve on the mechanics or put the players closer to them. In short, what they did here wasn't even a good idea. This should have died quickly in the planning and evaluation stages.
So we have an overpriced iPhone port of a cardgame port that costs more on PC than it does on iPhone, which wasn't a good idea to begin with, of a board/cardgame that wasn't very successful to begin with, that was badly ported to PC and doesn't have any of the minimum requirements a PC game must meet to be worthwhile.
I don't recommend this.
This game may be fun as a board game, but it should stay that way. The AI is awful and the RNG for cards is awful. An all-around bad experience is awaiting you on this train ride. A waste of $6.99 if you ask me.
The game did not work for multiplayer. Crashed.
This game is unplayable as a multiplayer game which is the only reason we purchased it in the first place. "Network Error 17" is now a running gag in our group because of this game.
This game should be removed from steam until it's bugs are fixed.
God help you running this game on a laptop that doesn't have a dedicated GPU. It really hammers the CPU for no good reason. Don't expect to run a video chat program (Zoom/Google Meet) and this at the same time on most non-gamer laptops. You see this in Asmodee's other game Carcassonne. They can't seem to program an efficient game that doesn't use an entire core. Thankfully multi-threading seems to be outside their scope. Note, if your CPU is pegged at 100%, you'll get logged out/DC from their game servers.
No audio/video notifications when it's your turn. Considering you have a timeline limit of ~20 seconds to play a move, not getting notification that it's time to play a move is a serious problem.
There is no confirmation of your card play. Accidentally click or slightly drag your card? You are committed no matter what.
You can't mouse over/right click a card for a description of what it's going to do. If you already know the game, awesome, but how would you know that movement is different distances in the train vs the roof?
You can't control how long player turn timers last.
You can't view your special abilities while playing in the game.
Game variants/modifications are gated behind single player completion targets. So if you want to simply start playing with friends, you can't play with all the rules in the game.
Plenty of times during the game I had to make decisions without seeing the entire train because I view seemed to be pinned on my character.
Then there is confusing and buggy match making, Network Error Code 17, game crashing trying to play a second game after finishing a game.
Summary? This is just a bad conversion of the game. Buggy, incomplete, crashes.
decent game but not for me. here you and a few bandits decide to rob a train so your looting, punching, shooting, and trying to avoid the sheriff. base game has you playing 5 rounds but each round consists of a few turns (how many varies) where you play one action card or draw new cards for each turn in the round. you do not do these actions until all players have taken all their turns for the round then characters will play out these action as they were played. this takes a little foresight on where you think you, loot, and other players will be so if you get knocked back a car or to the roof by the sheriff it could destroy the rest of your turn.
Colt Express is an interesting idea and has it's moments. for myself i don't feel it's something i would get into as once actions play out there is nothing you can do to correct missteps.
Fun, easy to follow, challenging as well.
Simple but deceptively devious. Great to play with friends and family
needs more players
bad online mode :K
great graphics
There are a lot of negative reviews for this game and I can't really figure out why. Boardgamers are hard to please, I guess.
This is a great digitisation of the base Colt Express game.
Of course, it isn't as fun as playing the physical game itself, but it's also priced very appropriately. Grab it, grab a few friends, and you can’t go wrong for some hilariously chaotic fun, especially in times when physical get-togethers are less likely.
Ho, wow, what a disaster.
Okay, first off, this may actually be the best developed Asmodee Digital game I've played so far. Which is, naturally, like saying "this may just be the most appetizing looking three-week-old dumpster food I've seen so far".
This game is actually playable and, in fact, seems rather appealing at the start (in sharp contrast to the "should I laugh or cry at how bad this is?" response their other digital offerings all-too-swiftly evoke). Unfortunately, the game's issues are still pretty extreme (by non-Asmodee standards).
<<1>> Let's start with the fact that the AI is astoundingly bad. It's a predictive turn-based game, so it'd actually be extremely easy to code basic reactionary responses and then just mix it up a bit via personality archetypes and/or RNG, perhaps tied into the fact that cards are frequently played hidden. But, okay, difficulty is nice, but not strictly necessary.
But why are the AI starting turns off by trying to loot the empty floor? It's not like they didn't know it was empty, and would remain empty while looting. Okay, maybe it's a clever time-killing action.. no, wait, why are you running towards an empty end wagon? Why are you punching in that wagon? Oh, good, now you're looting an empty wagon again.
Let's see how the other AI are doi- no, okay, that was a mistake. They're just running into the Marshall. Over. And over. And over again. Well, I guess I can only assume this game's AI is intended to be a cautionary tale about the dangers of drinking bleach..
<<2>> The game has a campaign mode and a classic mode. Campaign mode is structured like a puzzle mode, but RNG-based card draws, along with the idiotically random AI, mean that the game mode is just an endless grind against bad RNG. If the AI was reliable we could maybe pass it off as a rogue-type puzzle challenge but, as-is, the mode is just bad.
Oh, but it gets worse because, of course it does. This is Asmodee, after all. The campaign mode is bugged. How bugged, you ask? Well, it's bugged to the point where we need Samuel L. Jackson to pop in, look around incredulously, and say "I have had it with these m*f*ing bugs in this m*f*ing game!". After which he'd then immediately follow up with "This game is a virus, and burning it is the cure." and "Given that it's a stupid-asṣ game, I've elected to ignore it."
Ahem, sorry, tangented a bit there. But seriously, every second campaign level seems to refuse to acknowledge actual wins, while randomly giving me wins when it shouldn't. Like one mission where I had to punch a guy off the train, but it kept not counting it, until that guy punched someone ELSE off the train, and hey, it suddenly worked [I'd punched that guy off previously, so it wasn't as simple as just being a misassociated quest flag]. Another mission had me fire a gattling gun. I had to hit three people on the roof. Not a single person was on the roof, but it counted it as a win when I fired the gun, despite not having counted my three hits in a previous attempt at the mission.
So, in short, not only are the card draws and NPCs RNG-driven, but the actual mission completion is as well. Hot dayum, Asmodee; You sure know how to innovate your games in the most undesirable of ways.
<<3>> Okay, so we've clarified that the single-player aspects are a complete mess. But hey, this is a multiplayer game, so it should be salvageable, right? Eh? What's this? The game has no local multiplayer? But.. that's easier to develop than online multiplayer, which is why so many games only have local and not online. And.. and this game actually works great for hot-seat, since accidentally glancing at someone's hand doesn't ruin anything, as you can't be sure how the cards will actually be played and you mostly will be seeing them as they're played anyway. The heck?
Okay, but surely online will save the game? Oh, you sweet ever-hopeful dear, you. Of /course/ Asmodee'd cover their bases. These guys are professionals, y'know. Kinda in the same way that Mario is a professional plumber, what with his forcefully shoving himself into every pipe he comes across. The trick is in doing everything people *wouldn't* expect of your role, while not accomplishing anything that's actually expected of you. ..huh, why did politicians just come to mind?
Anyway, online mode requires an Asmodee account, but it gives me errors when I try to register one (and that after figuring out what its password expectations were, since they weren't listed). Then, when closing out of the online screen, it gives "connection lost" error messages, which may just be a quirk, but doesn't strike me as being encouraging.
Okay, so I make an Asmodee account through browser. It gives me a totally random username but, thankfully, the game's "username" field accepts my e-mail. 0 to 3 players online at any given time? No active online games to join? Yep, saw that coming. Kept having to reset my password, as well.
<<4>> Bit of a trailing note, but you *will* need to complete the bugged out campaign to unlock all the game mechanics for multiplayer. While normally a negative, in this case we can be thankful that the campaign mode is incredibly short. Unfortunately, given the inflation caused by RNG and bugs, you can still expect this to take a few hours to clear.
---
In summary, the game has a solid, enjoyable foundation, ruined by.. well, everything. if you want a digital board game at the level of an unpolished flash game to fiddle around with, don't get irritated easily, and don't have high expectations, then this game would be worth picking up free, or perhaps even from a Tier 1 bundle.
I really, really don't recommend spending more money than that, if for no other reason than Asmodee Digital desperately needs to go under [so as to be taken over by someone more competent] (or be at risk of such, so they reconsider their mindblowingly skeezy, unprofessional practices] and stop terrorizing gamers with their.. incredible development approach. Seriously, Asmodee- go let some high schoolers (with a background in CS) code your games, instead. They really couldn't do a worse job. I mean, you gotta really try, to release games that are as broken as yours.
Ahem. But yeah, the game may actually be feasible if you've got several friends on-hand who are up for playing it online. But, y'know, with how broken everything else is, I can't guarantee that won't break on you as well. And really, this game has a fun enough concept, but we're talking "casual boardgaming". You may get an evening or two, maybe even three, out of it, and that'd certainly be enough if you only needed a single copy of the game or were able to get it free or cheap.
But buying 3 to 6 (you can't mix players and AI, or play with fewer than 3 players) copies of this game just for a few evenings of "Meh, I guess this is alright- I mean, I don't *hate* it.", all while facing the risk that bugs or other polish issues may lower that evaluation down further?
Again, if you can get this cheap or free, and you know what you're getting into, it's could MAYBE be worth picking up. But at the game's present state of polish, it should likely retail around $1.99, or maybe even $5 for six copies. It'd be the kind of game you'd pick up on sale for 40 cents. Y'know, the "Hmm. I'm not entirely sure whether or not a small candy bar would have been better than this or not.." price range.
Basically, whatever you do, just don't pay $7 for this. Light your money on fire, instead, if you have to. At least then Asmodee wouldn't be raking in cash despite deliberately and consistently releasing broken products. To once again reference the esteemed Samuel L. Jackson: "Yes, they deserve to die* and I hope they burn In hell!"
*(In the sense of "Go Under". No direct hostility towards Asmodee employees intended.)
Final Score:
"I ain't play nothin' that ain't got sense enough to disregard its own feces." / "[Avoiding a] Land of pain, misery, and strife"
( 2 / 5)
The actual boardgame is phenomenal. Gameplay provides a ton of laughs and a programming style turn order that I loved from the first time I played it. I bought it shortly after and love sharing it with everyone I can.
THIS though. Is trash. The single player campaigns just straight seem broken. I couldn't even figure out how to progress past the first challenges. Maybe it's me, but it seemed impossible. Clunky interface leads me to believe it's a mobile port, with no additional work done for its pc release. It just feels poor in every way. Disappointing. BUY AND PLAY the real board game. Not this.
Utterly awful, unusable UI. Don't waste your time. Buy the board game instead.
a fun game
Game is not robust against temporary connection lost of one of the players. They are thrown out of the game and there is no way to return to the game. Also, When playing a private game with friends, the timer bar is really annoying and does not add to a relaxed evening of game playing.
this game based on board game and it's super fun but sadly only one mod and there is i think 7 Expansion in board game in digital .ver only original game here is pros and cons list
pros
1- cross play which mean if anyone bought the game on mobile .ver you can play with them on steam or pc . ver
2- the game are so fun for party
3- great servers
4- nice arts
cons
1- there is only original game no Expansion hope they add Expansion as DLC's and people can buy it
2- while you play there is no music or song just sound effects of train and actions
3- when you press ESC while you playing online you can't go to sitting to control the sounds
Love the real game but this port is bad! Login issues, constantly have to change password. Games randomly drop to Error Code 17 whatever that is. Our whole group suffered from this. Get it together for what you are charging.
It's a fun boardgame but not a great video game. Lack of local multiplayer pretty much means I'll never play it.
This is great fun looking but it doesn't seem to have the functionality of some of the other games I have played like ticket to ride.
Shame you can't play multiplayer locally and more importantly you can't play with 2 players :(.
Why can't you setup a game with 2 players and have a bot as the third player?
great game like the Story mode
A fairly light programming game which was fun for a while, but as a deeper strategy gamer, it lost my interest pretty quickly. Have not played in real life as I would rather spend time playing heavier games, but maybe one day, if I'm forced.
7/10
This is a digital board game without pass and play. I bought it because I like the board game and I wanted to play it with some family over the holidays, opened it once to discover I could not play with multiple people at a table, and then never ran the game again.
If you are making a digital version of a board game, then pass and play is a must have requirement.
Close enough to the tabletop experience. Wish it had the expansions.
I started Colt Express with boardgame. Hooked. Noticed quite soon that "CE" PC-game version was also available ..really nice surprise! Can be played like "snack", when waiting next board-game session :-)
Warmly recomment!!
This game is so bad that it made me regret helping children or whatever foundations the JingleJam is meant to help.
Got this through a Humble Bundle. The second mission seemed... oddly difficult? Story mode doesn't seem very well implemented.
Got this from humble bundle.
It's ok game but nothing great. The card system is super frustrating, the story mode too hard and luck dependant. Could have been better, still not a bad idea. If there was a mode that would allow any action regardless of cards in possession i feel it would have been better, at least could plan properly.
it works. then suddenly gets stuck. the background still keeps going. you can still pause. but it will not go on.
a bit chaotic even without the tunnel thing. If this was more straightforward it'd be more fun, and perhaps also the Marshal pack... a Marshal roguelike deckbuilder could've been the best option!
Oh, and a true pass-and-play mode!
Not as much Fun as the real Boardgame, but still a good PC adaptation
No local multiplayer making this digital board game completely pointless.
It's a shame because it looks like a fun game to play for hours
I been writing programs on and off for 30 years, and I worked on multiple jobs writing programs. My longest program, that I wrote solo, was around 20,000 lines of code. I never in my life, seen a program or a game, where a programmer messed up something as simple as exiting the application, until this game. (I've seen programmers screw up almost everything else, but never before something as simple as exiting a program)
You can NOT even quit this game. Pushing the quit button, basically locks up the computer, and you have to push Ctrl-Alt-Delete to terminate it. That says a lot, in my opinion, of the quality of the coding in this game. A button that is labeled quit should ONLY quit the program, not do anything complicated or "unexpected" other then exiting the program, it should never lock up the person's computer.
Pretty good adaption of the main game. However, I would only recommend if you're going to be playing with friends online. The servers are empty otherwise, and while I haven't played the "Story mode", I can't imagine it being much fun on top of there not being really any incentives.
Colt Express is a programming game where you play as 1 of 6 bandits trying to rob the most money from a train over the period of 5 rounds.
Gameplay-wise, you play cards according to turn order, from your hand. There are 6 basic abilities, Punch, Move L/R, Climb U/D, Loot, Shoot. Punch hits one of the other bandits in the same car as you causing them to drop a loot of your choice onto the floor. Move L/R allows you to move up to 1 train car L/R or up to 3 train cars on the roof. Climb U/D makes you climb up onto the roof or down from the roof. Loot picks up any 1 item from the floor. Shoot hits any target 1 or 2 train cars away causing them to gain a block card.
Each bandit has an unique special ability that only they can use. E.g. Belle, enemies must target another bandit with Shoot or Punch if there is another bandit in the same car as you.
Conclusion, Colt Express is passable but not addictive. It's a lukewarm response from me. I could teach kids how to play this but it would probably bore them.
PROS
1. Simple to Understand
Basic actions, no confusion. Playable.
CONS
1. Nothing Exciting About the Game
The theme is just Western train robbing. The actions are fairly simple and lukewarm.
Never tried the boardgame before, so went into it expecting nothing. Completed the tutorial and never want to play it again. It's ugly, boring and there's just too much randomness. I am pretty sure it's a fun boardgame, and might even work on mobile, but on computer, there's just so much games that are a better waste of your time.
poor quality
A very excellent adaptation of the popular board game. There are high-quality design and animation of the characters, good western music. This "Colt Express" has its own story line of every characters and comics for completing the stages. So, you have two ways of playing: offline with bots or with other people, which makes the game more interesting together.
Just bought this to play with my friends abroad. No ability to play as a two player game means we wasted our money. The board game supports two-player play, and you'd think that even if this game didn't then they could let you play with the AIs that you can evidently play against single player.
I almost didn't refund, but the turns took too long, and just a little bit too much luck
Why doesn't this have local pass-and-play multiplayer? Seems like a giant oversight. I would have liked to recommend this but that's a key part of a board game.
This is a very fun game, I just wish they would also release the expansions for it. For me, the expansions are really what made this game fantastic
This game has way too much randomness and luck to be enjoyable. Throwing a couple of dice would be more enjoyable.
This is very good game. ANd very good adaptation of the board game.
But there is no players. No body play and no body look chat.
Also it will be good if you can make Mac version.
CHeers!
Super umsetzung des Brettspiels! Echter Kauftip!
Very good!
Nice Game, But the graphics is awfull.
First of all, I want to tell you that I don't like to give a negative review. Some designers/artists/etc. probably worked very hard. But to be honest; I think there are boardgames on Steam whom I've played (and will play) more than Colt Express. So if you're into digital boardgames and are trying to figure out if this one is worth it... I would go for something else.
Nonetheless I shall start with the pro's:
+ nice graphics
+ easy to use: making moves is straightforward
+ has stories added to the classic game
But then... the biggest flaw. What in my opinion kills the game (eventually). The replayability is severly compromised. Other games may be pricier, but if I compare the price with the amount I have played them... You probably get more bang for your buck on another title.
Cause?
The multiplayer is very empty. And as a boardgamer, I like the "social" aspect of a game. Just having fun online with other people. But this is hard to do. The lobby is empty, no games running and almost nobody joins my games. I'll write something in the loby-chat, only to hear my voice echoing in this empty canyon and the tumbleweed rolling in the wind.
So in my opinion, after a few hours soloplay to get the hang of it, I'll play this game little. Because it's hard to find opponents.
I like the origial board game and its expansions, If you have a bunch of people to play with, this is like the boardgame. Not sure I will play with unknown ppl online tho.
I agree with the rest of the reviews. If you enjoyed the board game, this is a good game to play when you're on your own.
This is a very good adaptation of the board game bearing the same name. Online multiplayer matches are particularly enjoyable providing that …
a) … you can find enough players
b) … you are not getting endless turns
At the time of this review, the game indeed suffers from a rather small online player base and some reliability issues. Cross-platform play (I can confirm that PC/iPad works well) will hopefully help the player base grow. The single player missions are a nice diversion, despite occasionally weak AI.
