Chop Goblins compresses the retro FPS formula into a small package, where a simple premise justifies the adventure without needing more. Each level sends you after Gremlins-like Goblins in different time periods and unique locations. Enemies primarily use blades, and having them frequently thrown at you keeps you active while maintaining the Goblin identity and a balanced difficulty. Poking around sometimes uncovers hidden rooms with weapons or upgrades—a genre staple that similar games often overlook. Where it’s weakest is the collectible Chopcoins that only serve to feed a score counter when they could have supported a shop system. Still, it scratches the itch of a fun, focused shooter that respects your time.

This is genuinely and unironically one of my favourite games of all time! The gameplay loop is simple but not too repetitive and honestly just an overall huge recommendation from me! I truly hope to see a sequel game because I love this stupid thing so dearly!! PS I stream this game frequently and I may work on editing up a wiki for game info :)

Like Dusk, but simpler, without jumping, and without soap. So basically nothing like Dusk.
It was a fun endeavor, pretty good levels (both design and visually) and awesome soundtrack. Shooting is fine.
Game is short, cheap and has a Jägermeister bottle as a prop.
Definitely a recommended.

Da fan di David Szymanski, per me Chop Goblins è stata una piccola gemma. È un gioco molto più compatto rispetto ai suoi titoli più grossi, ma si sente subito la mano dello sviluppatore: gunplay super solido, ritmo altissimo e level design che ti spinge sempre avanti senza mai diventare banale. Non a caso viene presentato proprio come un “microshooter”, pensato per essere finito in una singola sessione (circa mezz’ora), ma con abbastanza varietà e segreti da invogliarti a rigiocarlo.
Il feeling è quello di un FPS arena/retro moderno: corri, spari, schivi, cerchi risorse e impari le mappe. E i 5 livelli hanno davvero personalità. Si parte dal Museum, che è una specie di introduzione perfetta: ambienti stretti, passaggi nascosti, subito il gusto per i segreti e per le armi trovate “prima del previsto”. Poi Streets alza il caos con un’atmosfera urbana sporca e frenetica, piena di scorci, interni e deviazioni intelligenti. Dracula’s Castle è probabilmente il livello che più spinge sul lato dark fantasy/gotico, con trappole, stanze cupe e un mood da castello horror vecchia scuola. Greece cambia completamente tono e regala un contrasto bellissimo, con rovine e scorci più aperti che sembrano quasi onirici, e infine The Future chiude con una botta più sci-fi che completa benissimo il viaggio “fuori di testa” nel tempo. La varietà dei livelli e dei segreti è una delle cose migliori del gioco.
A livello estetico l’ho adorato: per me ha proprio quelle vibes tra dreamcore, dark fantasy e B-movie anni ’80. È low-poly, sporco al punto giusto, ma con un’identità fortissima. Non cerca il fotorealismo, punta tutto su atmosfera e sensazioni, e ci riesce alla grande. Ha quel fascino strano e “da sogno febbrile” che ti resta in testa anche dopo averlo finito, e che mi ricorda perché Szymanski è così bravo a creare mondi piccoli ma memorabili. Anche il fatto che duri poco non è un difetto: è corto, sì, ma densissimo, e ogni mappa ha segreti, scorci alternativi e piccoli dettagli che ti fanno venire voglia di rifarlo subito. Inoltre i livelli bonus remix sono un’aggiunta fantastica, perché non sono una copia pigra: rimescolano struttura, spawn dei nemici, progressione delle armi e diventando molto più tosti e perfetti per chi vuole una sfida vera.
In breve: costa poco, dura poco, ma diverte tantissimo ed è pieno di personalità. Bellissimo gioco, consigliatissimo.

It's really fun. Doesn't overstay it's welcome, doesn't take too long to complete, doesn't take up too much space, doesn't cost that much to purchase, and generally provides an enjoyable experience. Shooting feels good, response mechanics are satisfying, the environment is interactive, levels are well designed and the art style is enjoyable. That Greece level is just art - easily the best looking in the game. Fans of first person shooters should absolutely check this one out.
My only complaints are:
(1) the player can't jump. That really sucks not to have in a boomer shooter, especially one without fall damage. It massively hurts mobility unless you can run as fast as you can in the OG Doom games. On that note,
(2) the player doesn't move fast enough, in my opinion. If the player could just move, like, 15 percent faster that would be awesome.
(3) there is no soap in the game. Dusk players know why this is a net negative.
Please check it out, it will only take a single evening to play through and it's awesome. I wish there were more cheap and short games like this with good replayability and quality. Games that could be completed in about the same time as watching a movie. Because I don't know who has the time to beat those long ass games that expect you to spend 20 hours to get through the main story.

Chop Goblins is a game I went into with some very minor exposure beforehand. I was briefly present for a Pyrocynical stream where he played it. As such, I had a very small expectation, but was otherwise pretty up for the experience.
The experience I got was nothing short of pleasant. Chop Goblins is a short boomer shooter with some of that David Szymanski charm. Though if you've played other David Szymanski games, this won't really be like any of those. The closest thing I have to compare it to is Dusk and even then I'm simplifying things a bit much. I really enjoyed seeing a more humor focused game from David Szymanski, especially after I've been going through his other games. It was a nice change of pace and isn't a bad game itself.
Chop Goblins is a pretty basic boomer shooter with some neat weapons and goblins to use them on. There are some secrets to find in each level and challenges you can put yourself up to. (If you're up for it at least) I got all achievements and I gotta say, dagger only is a very fun challenge, especially on the higher difficulties. My playthrough was done on Goblin mode which is the hardest difficulty. It's not actually that bad all things considered. It really just asks basic things of you like cover management and ammo conservation. If you've played pretty much any boomer shooter or standard fps on hard mode or above, you'll do just fine on Goblin. Honestly, it was the perfect difficulty for me and I think made the levels stand out more.
The environments are fun to explore, each goblin type is a blast to engage with. There's some neat skill expression with moving quickly through a level you've memorized. Going for high-scores or speedrunning through them. This one is definitely a game to check out if you've got a bit of a fast paced early days fps itch you need to scratch. It's not super deep or mechanically complex, but it's fun. And that's all it needs to be.
While shooters are not normally my taste, I enjoyed this one as it was fun and silly, and it was honestly not hard at all on easier difficulties (the final achievement was tricky, though). The music is actually really good, and all the secrets make it more fun, too. May not be worth full price, but I think it was worth the sale price.

If there is one thing you can say about a David Szymanski game, it's that they always have vision. This "micro FPS" took me just over 40 min to complete but I had a blast the entire time.
I really appreciate David and his bite sized games that have addicting gameplay and a LOT of character.

Another great early game by David Szymanski. You can tell he’s getting more confident with his sense of humor and combat systems in this game. While it is extremely short, it’s a decent microcosm of boomer shooter action that some full featured indie games have struggled to capture the same essence of. You got secrets, end game guns hidden in early game areas, mini boss enemies that discourage standing out in the open blindly shooting at them, and solid atmosphere.
Give it a shot if you want to see more his origins as a developer.

Short, funny and bonkers this fun little shooter will have you laughing as you shoot, stab, impale and explode the little gobbos.
The game has a very enjoyable style as well as a good soundtrack! There are lots of secrets to find in the levels and enough reasons to play through the game a few times, especially if you want to get all the achievements or you are into speedrunning.

Good flow, simple mechanics, great level design, fun challenges, and good sense of humor. Roughly an hour to beat, and 3-4 hrs if you are going for all achievements
Pretty different compared to some of his other work which mainly focuses on Story Telling but based on a few of his non-steam early releases- yeah this makes sense. It's a pretty fun game with a decent amount of secrets and achievements to at least keep you entertained for an hour or two. It's story is non-existent so if you're looking for that, this probably isn't for you. But if you just want a fun stupid little game to mess around with for a bit, it's awesome.

Simple bite-sized boomshoot fun. It won't take too much of your time to beat, get all the cheevos, or play the new remixed versions of levels, but it's enjoyable throughout.
You're getting what you're paying for, and if you're getting it on sale then yeah, it's alright. It's not going to blow you away, I do wish there were maybe like a couple more levels and maybe a final boss.. there isn't one, but again, it's like 5 bucks and on sale it's like nothing so yeah. It's aight.

That's a really good simple game. The shooting feels very satisfying and enemies gib very satisfactorily. I love that you can parry projectiles, that's a cherry on top. Enemy design is fun. The level design is interesting and easy to navigate. Visuals and music are awesome, each level is distinct with it's own theme. The game is very short, so it doesn't get boring. I love it! Thankfully there is a kid friendly mode, so it's gonna be my nephew's first proper game. I think he'll love it just as much I did

Some interesting moments, level design is great, but overall just not enough to justify the game.
A solid ~2-3 hour experience, nails the goofy retro-horror aesthetic.
Would unironically recommend this game over DUSK for players looking for a good introduction to the "Boomer Shooter" genre.
