I like this one and have done multiple playthroughs, but am going to keep doing more to see more of the endings. I do like the multiple choices of gender and sexuality in your character, including whether you even want to have any romance involved. There's references to actual historical pirates (I love the ghost of a legendary pirate queen who guides one of the ships you can choose, she's inspired by my girl Grace O'Malley!) and there's some piratical politics going on, not just between the pirates but also in navigating relations with "civilized", law-abiding (mostly) society on land, which I like because it's historically accurate. It does do away with the expectation of historical accuracy, though, because this world involves magic, ghosts, curses, and sea monsters...which is frankly the best way to do pirates, IMO! It is strictly text-based, so if you're looking for a visual novel experience, be aware that the scenes are all painted by your imagination. A solid, enjoyable entry into the Choice Of games, which I tend to enjoy overall.

所有载具的人称都是she/her有点难绷。船是queen，海贼王是king....像是挽尊一样说king也许是女性[spoiler] 但其实就是男王 [/spoiler] 。
剧情总体还是爽的，女作者所以溺爱一下给好评。

Not that long, but everything you would want or need in a pirate game.
Consitend Choices, many different endings, not much railroading, stats match the choices and no forced interaction with other characters, this game has none of the classic mistakes that can ruin a choice game.
If you want to play a pirate, this is your game.
That was a crazy whirlwind of events! I have no freaking idea why my go to skill in all of these games is Diplomacy... The ones that have it that is, but holy hell! My MC charmed her way through a loooooot of stuff! ^^"
Anyway! There was certainly no time to wait and laze about! One event comes after another! There are backstabbing beeps everywhere and did I play all the parties? Maybe I did.
Romance... UH............. Freakity freak. u.u Does it count as romance if you just see a guy and bang him on your first meeting? Taking him as a lover and then "politics before romance"? No...... Well... That was all to say that... There isn't much focus on romance. Like you can reject it outright too. But let's face it... There were a lot more problems resolved [i]and[/i] created by bedding people. Heh heh.
Kay well... It's not great... But it's not bad either. I just wanted to see how far I could get with picking some ridiculous options whilst maintaining Diplomacy. XD
Oh and there are some weird af "options" and "messages" that wouldn't even exist back in those days, so ignore all that. You are far more intelligent than you think. Do not stoop to such a level. :>
Double oh: There is nothing wrong with being called a "Pirate Queen" it sounds as sexy as "Pirate King", so shh!
Fun game but it is pretty short. Get it during a sale.
This game is beyond short. Don't let my hours fool you I left it open last night but finished it in a single sitting.
It is so incredibly short and seeks to cram its entire arc into a that blink of an experience. The result is everything is just thrown at you, a few minutes in you inherit a captaincy. A few minutes after getting your first ship, you've built a small fleet. Everything progresses as lighting speed and all of the major goals require no investment or effort, they just happen in your favor because there's no time for anything else.
A very confused storytelling experience.
Ends too soon, but worth playing. A really engaging interactive story!

A great game, if you like choose your own adventure kind of games, and you aren't lazy enough to read.
It is well-written, with plenty of interesting characters and choices to make. I really enjoyed replaying the game to discover all the possible outcomes.
If you are familiar with other Choice of Games titles, this one could easy be put among the best one.
If, however, you are new to this kind of games, and you like pirates, you won't be disappointed. Choice of the Pirate offers you a possibility to live your own adventure unlike any other.

I bought this game years ago and find myself still coming back to replay it, so I thought I'd leave a review. The pirate aesthetic is portrayed really well, with fleshed out descriptions and really in-depth lore and storytelling. Characters have their own agendas, your choices matter and you get to decide where your character's loyalties lie.
You can't explore everything the game has to offer in one playthrough, which gives you a lot of replayability. The game also allows you to lose without just getting a 'Game Over' screen - the consequences of failed encounters can sometimes continue to affect your journey many chapters later. Would recommend for anyone looking to play Captain for an immersive adventure on the high seas.
A fun, well written romp. If you like the pirate aesthetic give it a go

I really enjoyed this game! The game does give you some options that are never followed up on (e.g. once I asked a fellow pirate for a favor in the future, but "the future" never came, and they never did repay me), and it seems like some choices which should lead to negative consequences don't actually have any consequences at all. Similarly, focusing on combat and negotiation seems to be the best combination of traits here, as the others aren't really all that useful and don't help you in the "boss" fight at the end, if you choose to go that route. It is, however, well-written, detailed, and a very nice read. It definitely is fun and adventurous! I've replayed it multiple times just to get different endings, see how the route takes me, etc. I'd recommend this title if you have an itch for pirates and like CYOA games.
Hello Steam user who is wondering if this little visual novel is worth their time and when I say visual novel, I actually mean textbased interactive novel! Which is basically a visual novel without the visual and the digital successor to those choose your own adventure books that were super popular in the 80s... I think...
What? I wasn't alive in the 80s and considering that the original run of such Choose Your Own Adventures started in 1976 and lasted until 1998, it's easy to say that they were at least popular during that point.
Okay I got sidetracked so on to the review.
Pros
– Fun Concept/Well Executed. While the concept is a little bit clichéd and simple I believe the story actually does a good job of really taking advantage of high fairing sea life of a pirate. It doesn't just show the plundering aspect or the drunken debauchery you get at at Port but also the more boring but practical stuff such as ship management, sailing and gathering information on your next targets. I think people forget to actually be a successful pirate you actually have to know what you're doing as far as sailing and being able to command your crew effectively. It doesn't get super deep into that aspect of pirating life but at least it shows that this stuff was A) important and B) actually happened.
– Customization. The fact that you can pretty much make your player character into pretty much anything you want and romance anything you want is a nice touch and while this feature doesn't really factor into the story much other than (I guess) who you're romancing, it was nice to include. More game should be inclusive to all walks of life.
– Replayability. With all the choices you make in this game and these are choices that actually do affect the story, it's natural for the game to have many different endings even if the main three core endings are the same there are plenty of variations to decide stuff like who you romance or don't romance and if you actually achieve your quest or end up failing.
Cons
– the save feature or lack of multiple save features. The game automatically saves if you happen to turn it off and that's fine but I wish there was the ability to have multiple saves just in case you accidentally hit a wrong choice. True you can restart the game but that means you lose all of your progress and if you just spent the last hour trying to get a certain achievement and end up hitting the wrong thing that's kind of a pain in the ass.
– The characters. I realize that unlike a visual novel textbased games is more about the journey and less about character relationships but besides two characters – Caesar and Tinima – I really didn't feel an attachment much to anyone. And even for those two I mentioned you have to actively romance (or if you don't want to go that route, befriend them) them to really learn their stories. Everyone else just kind of felt like just existed to do stuff and be names on a page rather than actually be characters. I enjoyed the game find enough but having an expansion on character interactions would've been nice.
Neutral
– Achievements. I will admit I'm an achievement hunter and I like when games have them and I believe they encourage people to play a game more than once which just adds to replayability.
– The price. It's under five dollars even with tax. Enough said.
All in all for my first foray into textbased interactive nobles this was a fun one and has actually kind of got me into the genre. Who doesn't want to try their hand at being a roofless and feared Pirate King?
Short but entertaining. I recommend it as I do with every one of their games. They really know how to have a variety of stories for their people.

I've played quite a few Choice of games (or at least text-based games) but for those who haven't, this is a good one to start out on to familiarize yourself with the genre. No visuals here, just a story where you control the main character through your choices, which shape the game experience.
The story here is good as well as accessible, which is pretty typical of Choice of games. There are some different endings depending on your options, although choices don't have as much of an impact as they do in some of the other games. It was pretty easy to get all of the achievements (in some choice games, I've struggled to find the right combo to unlock some elusive achievements).
Another plus is the gender/sexuality options. Neither your gender nor your sexuality has an impact on the story, and you have a good variety of ways you can interact with other characters. The characters themselves are mostly interesting, although there are several minor characters who pop in and out but don't add much.
Not all choices have an impact on the story, but there's enough variety that you can still have different experiences on multiple playthroughs.
I really liked this one, choice of robots is still my favourite CYOA game but being a pirate is always fun. My only complaint is it seems too short and ends very abruptly. My time played is not accurate as i clicked away with the window open.

Your character starts at the very bottom, but can grow into a badass pirate legend. You'll soon captain you own ship and be given missions from several factions. You can help, hurt, or lie to mutliple factions. It's also possible to be neutral.
Pros:
-The story pulls you in right away and finds reasons for you to be invested in your character.
-Action and intrigue throughout, no slow points or endless text.
-Skills go up over time, based on what you choose.
-Buy, capture, or recruit additional pirate ships. Each ship has it's own backstory.
-Good replay options. Mainly through aiding different factions.
-Plenty of choices and characters you can interact with.
-Hunting down, out manuvering, fighting and boarding other ships is fun.
-Curses, ghosts, mermaids, sea monsters, tyrants, and treasure.
Cons:
-The story is too short. It's a big problem and the only reason there are cons on this list.
-Characters are pretty static.
-The author tries to make it a mystery of who the pirate king is. But it's pretty clear there's only one candidate. Would have been so much better to have a big reveal in the final chapter.
-The ending was wrapped up very quicly, with surprisingly no reprocussions. Doesn't really say what happens to you or the main characters.
-I had alot of leftover money at the end. I wanted more things to spend it on, or leave a legacy.
Overall:
-Alana Joli Abbott is such a great writer, and I would definitely play another game by her. BUT the story suffers from being too short. All the elements of an epic tale are there, but never fully realized. I do recommend this, epsecially if you like pirates, but you may be disappointed by the end.
I recently bought this game, it's the first Choice of Games product I've played and I've just finished my first play-through today! I think it's a decent amount of time to finish (I might be a slow reader) and won't fail to please. I'd be lying if I didn't say I wish there was more it was that good and having stats was pretty useful. This'll likely be one of my favorite RPGs from now on and despite all the text I'd highly recommend it's worth giving this game a shot! However there seemed to be something missing from the characters to me, can't pinpoint what exactly but it was something.
In short, I'd recommend this game to those who enjoy RPGs such as I do and I hope you'll equally enjoy this game as much as I did!
I loved this game. It's somewhere between reading a can't-put-it-down book and playing an RPG. I hate reading books, but Choice of the Pirate (and all the other "Choice" games I've played) is way better. This one was particularly well-written, had good romance options, and really captured the swashbuckling adventure spirit.
A surprisingly fun game! Only on my first run at the moment, but there is a very high replayability potential, and I already find myself wondering what other paths I can go down. Lots of customisation options with an interesting pirate story, the kind I have a big soft spot for.

Another great game by "choice of games" took me 2 1/2 hours to finish up, so not too long but good writing and an intersting setting.

From the moment I reluctantly boarded a ship under orders from my captain to the moment I became pirate king, Choice of Pirates was a thrilling tale tailored to my taste by me.
Choice of the Pirate is, like all Choice of Games, a charming text adventure that focuses on story, worldbuilding, and your choices. The story itself kept me interested, and the worldbuilding was rich. If you play and read quickly, you can generally get through the game in about an hour, hour and a half. There is quite a bit of replayability, though I will say that the first playthrough is the most memorable. Overall, this game is well worth the money.
I highly recommend Choice of Games if you're interested in text based RPGs. I have played Choice of Pirate as well as Choice of Robots, and I had a grand time with each.

Imo this is one of the best Choice of x games out there. The story is good and the universe is really nicely built. I think I've replayed it like six times at least already. It was also really cool how they included different genders and sexualities, we need more of that in games.
I think that I've been spoiled when it comes to Choice games. This game isn't bad on it's own, but when compared to other options it simply falls flat. I often felt a bit railroaded, and that my choices only barely mattered. When the game ended I thought I was only halfway through it, and the ending scene was entirely underwhelming. All in all, kind of a disappointing game.
Its a cool story, and though the chapters are short it does help the game feel like it always moved quickly and never drags. I did sometimes think there was an option or two missing from certain parts- whether because i hadn't done the preconditions or they werent included i don't know. While the choices do seem to customize the story, in my experience they don't seem to change it drastically, which i dont mind too much. Also i would have liked to be able to spend a bit more time allocating my funds when i returned to port, as i only finished the game with 12 ships, though i had over 5000 gold (in one part two ships cost 200 gold so i could have apparently had Quite the fleet).
All in all good fun, a lot of choices, and a quick experience that feels solid throughout, though ends somewhat abruptly.
A very solid text adventure. Doesn't beat you over the head with imposed morals like some CoG titles, and lets you have fun in your own way over the course of the story. And pirates are just so damned fun in the first place.
There's nothing particularly outstanding about Choice of the Pirate, aside from the fact that the author consistently writes these same kinds of above-average solid games like Choice of Kung Fu. Ms. Abbott should be considered the standard all Choice of Games authors ought to aspire to reach if not surpass.

Very engaging and fun, some interesting stories behind it as well.
It's a shorter story than I'm used to for a Choose Your Own Adventure, but still good in it's own right. It's roughly about 10 chapters and right from the begining I felt my choices mattered and affected the story. This, coupled with it being short, creates a lot of change for replayability.
I really enjoyed this game. You can tell that there was a lot of work put into it. The descriptive details made the settings very real, the plot was also so intense and super engaging, and overall I really enjoyed this game. But with every game there are a few things that fall short though.

Gripping the first time round. Choices were actually pretty different even if the chapters had to end in a similar fashion. A little pricey, but hey, this text game can be more engaging than the latest AAA game that only has the shallowest of options
This is my first Choice of Games text adventure game I have played. After spending many hours in this game, I decided to recommend this game mainly because the publisher provided a contact e-mail on its website and after I tried for many hours trying to get an achievement, I gave up and e-mailed the publisher for help in contacting the author Alana for hints in obtaining an achievement.
Both the publisher and author were very friendly and helpful and helped me obtain the achievement which I have added in on a published community guide and the game is relatively easy to finish and get all achievements within less than 10 hours.
I would recomend this to all. It is well written.
If you like choose youe own adventure stuff then it is for you.

I like this particular choice of games title, the results of my actions felt fair and made sense. I actually played it through twice to get different endings. I also reccommend choice of Kung Fu, also by this author, for similar reasons.
A terrific little game with a fun and very well-designed branching narrative, delightful characters, and an intriguing overarching plot. There's an admirable commitment to diversity throughout, as well. Best of all, it's short, which means seeing all the branches isn't some eighty-hour commitment. I do wish there was more of it, but for the price and the likely minuscule development budget, it's quite impressive.
I've beaten it twice so far, and I'll be coming back for more. Highly recommended.
Hello and thanks for reading my review. I have been a fan of ‘choose your own adventure’ since the early 1980s when there was little else to do but watch all 3 channels on TV, listen to the radio or play Atari. For those who don’t know there is a whole line of ‘choose your own adventure’ books out there and can be enjoyed again and again just like this game! There is more than one story and more than one way to win – but then again there is more than one way to fail and lose. BUT that is the fun of it! Finding out what was around that corner or behind that door you didn’t try to open the first time. I bought a whole set of books for my oldest son for Christmas the year he turned 9 just as I was when I first discovered them. He now has his own Steam account and has played this game and loves it just as much as I did.
I give the game a 10 out of 10 for reminding me that it’s not about graphics or physics, sound and musical score or what high priced actor lent their phoned in talent to the game play. It is about the vision and creativity of the author and I thank everyone involved for bringing this vision to life and sharing it with all of us.
Not a bad game but I would more highly recommend the Choice of Robots. In my perspective, Choice of Robots has a more interesting plot overall and definitely more branches to explore. This game is less involved and shorter overall but it's still a decent story to buy for the price.
This game is truly excellent. As to be expected of a choose-your-adventure game, there's a multitude of options: but they're gripping, well played out, and genuinely change the course of the story. Your skills and relationships influence the plot as well; they're not superfluous percentages that have no bearing on your gameplay.
As should be the case, what I loved most was the /story/. The excitement of battle, the attention to detail, the complicated politics -- all very well done. The writing is very good.
What initially tipped the scales for me to buy the game was the fact that it offered not just an option for the MC to be queer, but ALSO gave you the chance to be poly, AND gave you the chance to be trans or nonbinary (or trans nonbinary). Like, damn. What game does that? Those features were crucial to my engagement wit the game, though I do wish my gender identity had been mentioned/acknowledged a bit more.
Overall, yeah, strongly recommend Choice of the Pirate. You can be a poly gay trans pirate queen and honestly isn't that what all of us want?
i would of liked to seen this have a longer story. between chapters you jump in time. i also would like to see more profit from adition ships in your fleet. if the dev reads these please add more chapters at some point as if you become pirate king i would like to see a war between pirates and the crown.
It may be because, I never really got into the Pirate Genre, it might be because there is no failing in the game. Or maybe the story wasn''t as well wrtitten as it could have been...

Fun, clever little story with a lot of options and different directions you can go in. Very enjoyable.
I very much enjoyed being able to choose my character and their romantic interests with at least some degree of precision, then have the story respect that choice (instead of just swapping out character names and pronouns to approximate it).
That said, $4 is about the right price for this game; that's about what I'd expect to pay for a short novel, and it's good for the 2-3 times I'll probably actually end up reading it. Much more expensive than that would be silly.

I am glad this game is so cheap as I would have been much more salty about how short it was. I'd advise anyone from purchasing unless they were looking for something different to play. Choice of the Pirate is a game centered around your choices you make in the storyline that ultimately effects the plot in the end... I had a lot of fun choosing and reminding myself to be wary of what I choose... but I gotta say that some of the choices I made didn't really seem to bite me in the ass in the end at all. I never heard that character at all ever again after that choice I had made, and I was really expecting them to come back later on and try to stab me in the back for it. It didn't happen though, which was disappointing. I liked being able to pick out my signature clothing as a pirate, however that "choice" seemed to be purely asthetic... I created my own piece of clothing and I expected the game to sorta "substitute" my choice within the conversation when it came to that point but it never happened. A lot of the characters in the game are meaningless and you won't really need to remember their names since you'll only interact with them two different times out of the whole playthrough. The "love interest" really isn't interesting. After hooking up the relationship really isn't brought back up in the story at all until the epilogue in the ending. Another thing, the whole "pirate king" title barer is a mystery.... but.... it's not... the story makes it painfully obvious from the very beginning who the pirate king really is..
After purchasing the game on a whim during the sale, I have to say it is a pleasant break from my usually competitive FPS or RTS. It's like reading a book in which you can make your own choices. It has a wide variety of choices and seems to have at least 4 possible endings maybe more. It is worth a few play-trough’s to explore the options. It is an interactive novel so no expensive graphics or sound effects. All in all I’d give it an 8/10. Some choices you make can go "unnoticed" if certain choices are made after. If you enjoy reading and have a thing for pirates I would recommend it, and for only $5(3 during the sale) it’s worth it.
Very fun CYOA game. The choices and the charcters are well developed. You can feel yourself get pulled into the story and really consider each choice before pulling the trigger. The only downside is I thought it was a tad short, but for 3$, it is well worth the price.
Short, but sweet. I was able to do the things I wanted to, and enjoyed the story. Nothing spectacular, but well worth the price, in my opinion.

Honnestly, I'm more caught up in this amazing story than I would like to admit... I find myself closing my most cherished game just to continue this fabulous adventure with my favorite first mate, Caesar. In my opinion, it is totally worth the money, as it is entertaining, full of action, and done with a touch of humour that makes the whole experience great. The absence of sound or whatsoever first felt a little weird, but it's actually totally making you the real designer of the game, as you are the one creating the scenes in your imagination. I'd give it a solid 5/7

I find the best judge of a CYOA game is weather I was satisfied at the end AND wanted more. In this case that is yes and yes. As many have said it was better then some of their more recent offerings. Though I will say there is a slight otherworldly romantic aspect to The Sea Eternal that I did enjoy.
Would gladly give this one an 8/10 and recommend buying if you remotely like pirates.

This has got to be the best "Choice of" game I've had the pleasure of playing. It goes by pretty fast, but it's offered the most in-character and fun experience of playing one of my constant characters I've ever had. If you like pirates, the sea, or anything related- 10/10, best game, exact right amount of water.
ok so straight up this is a very quick game is it worth buying i think so and honestly if you haven't played text adventures before i think it's a good introduction.
I always liked books where you are the hero when I was younger I read many. I did not expect much from this game, but i was pleasently surprised by the quality of the tale in general, writhing, characters, plotlines etc. I found al that i loved from those books I used to read whithout the intricate stats you had to keep track of, only the pleasure of reading a good story that I could influence. Can't wait to get another one of those, but for now i'll just replay it... differently.

My first interactive novel, I decided to just buy this since it is dirt cheap and I was bored.
My money was well spent, it definitely made me feel like I was on a pirate adventure.
My only complaint is that there is not any rape options. I mean I am the Butt Pirate, I need the option for me to rape my victims.
Also, for those wondering about the novel based on the trailer, this isn't a SJW novel that has heavy themes on gender and sexuality. Even though about half of the trailer advertises these features, it really amounts to less than 5 choices in the game. There just tiny options that don't really affect much about the game, they are not shuffed in your face like how I thought they would be.

Though I'd say that the chosen name of this game is less than optimal, a fun text adventure hides beneath it. Not one akin to say Uncharted Waters or Sid Meier's Pirates, definitely not alike the Monkey Island series either. Simply put, Choice of the Pirate places you in a slightly magical pirate world where you're dropped into the action in the midst of ship-to-ship combat. Your choices boost certain stats, allow for certain events to happen, etc..
So far, you might think it not very different from other choice of games, but this one has its unique features. True, not [u]every[/u] single choice has a huge impact, such as the cosmetic ones for your flag and article of clothing... But most do influence things delicately. And the storyline has quite a bit of humor in it.

For the price Steam asks, this is definitely a good game to buy.
The author's done a fine job on immersion and plot, though
of course there's still room for improvement here and there.
If you haven't ever played a text game though, or if previous
choice of games disappointed you, then try the demo first.
Closer home to the quality of Choice of Robots in terms of writing compared to more recent COG titles. Enjoyed it until the end, which seemed a bit rushed, but I'll reserve judgement on the premise that there are more endings, and I may have just got one of the less well written ones.
Worth the price imo, will update when I get another playthrough in.

Piracy, mutiny, plundering, and awesome adentures made this CYOA game very very fun. I plan on playin it through multiple times!
