[b]Base game – 9/10[/b]

Simple yet engaging gameplay!

The only drawback is that the missions are built in such way that enemies are coming in stages which feel repetitive as they are very similar to each other – there are 10 unique waves after which they are just repeated with slight difficulty increase. At the same time, this doesn’t make the game less enjoyable.

The game supports controllers, but I recommend playing with mouse since you’ll be able to move significantly faster with the speed of your cursor.

All achievements are obtainable, no extreme. My personal experience is very positive and I absolutly liked it!

There are achievements that require completing a mission on a specific difficulty level, but you may consider them as simply set of levels to complete, where each next level is a little bit more difficult than previous. All is good!

Note, that one of the achievements requires completing a mission without dying even once, which, despite how it sounds, is not difficult to do and can be acquired on the easiest difficulty. I completed this objective from the first try when I specifically targeted it.

The game that started it all...

Spent lots of time playing this series when I was a kid, I've had a lot of fun with it and really enjoyed it.
This being the first game in the series, makes it the least fun game compared to the rest. But if we talk about what was improved in the "Episode 1" version, it's just a whole different experience, this alone made the game worth it for me.

Gameplay was fun, soundtrack was getting repetitive because it only played ONE song for all the levels, could be better but still fine. With the new version you can also use weapons from the newer games which was a very great addition. There's also other options to change how you want to play. Overall, it was a good game.

I also really like the idea that you can play all versions released for this game (and also the others), this way everyone can play whatever they like.

Not the best, but not a bad game at all. I definitely recommend to play it before the rest of the series.

Okay, hear me out!! This is a classic. An old gem that those who know they know. And it's exactly what it was as I remembered back in my childhood.

That said. You can complete this under an hour and only if you want to grind for the achievements, it'll take you a few hours. However, as simple as it is, just start from this game should you are planning to complete the entire Chicken invaders series.

I have mixed feelings about this game, but I ultimately decided to give it a negative review because it has more downsides than upsides.

Let's start with the good things about this game. This is a remaster of the original Chicken Invaders game that came out over 20 years ago which was an alright game back then. I didn't play this game much in my childhood, because it was overshadowed by Chicken Invaders 2, so nostalgia is definitely not a factor influencing this review. The remaster added new weapons, satellites, difficulties, mission types, achievements and other things that were already introduced in the next Chicken Invaders games. Most of these features are unlockable by collecting keys during missions. I think these features are good and were definitely worth adding to the remaster. Every mission can be highly customizable thanks to the settings that let the player controls how the game is going to be and what features should be or not be present during the mission.

Moving to the downsides list, the first one and the biggest of them all in my opinion, is the impossibility to move up and down in this game. You can only move left and right all the time and this limits a lot of things you can do in the game. You always feel cornered, you always need to collect items in the last second and you are an easy prey during asteroid levels. This is the only game from Chicken Invaders franchise where you can't move up and down. Next up, are the very repetitive level. All stages have the exact same waves, the only differences being the health and the speed of the enemies. This makes the game very boring, very predictable and in some levels you can 'cheat' by clearing everything with missiles every wave, every stage, until you finish the mission. There are no cutscenes between stages, something that was present in all the other Chicken Invaders game, and the ending is very blank, being just a final battle with the boss chicken that you see in all final waves of every stage. Also, this remastered version is mostly based on keys. This can be a good thing, but I think it's driven in a certain extreme that makes the experience bad.

Honestly, the other Chicken Invaders games are better and more fun to play. The only things that are fun in this game are completing the Steam achievements and trying to complete the medals of each mission type. Therefore, I don't recommend this game.

Я правильно сделал, что начал своё знакомство с этой серии с последней, пятой части Chicken Invaders, т.к. если бы я поиграл бы сначала в первую Chicken Invaders, то на этом бы моё знакомство с серией и закончилось бы. Я прошёл все части Chicken Invaders, включая последнюю и бесплатную версию Chicken Invaders Universe, и могу с определённостью сказать, что первая часть не просто самая слабая, а она бессмысленная в рамках наличия бесплатной версии Chicken Invaders Universe. Поэтому если и покупать самую первую часть Chicken Invaders, то только чтобы увидеть, как игра выглядела в самом начале, и какой путь проделала серия от первой до пятой части. Да, нельзя сказать, что изменения произошли кардинальные, но учитывая небольшую цену и отсутствие доступных среднему игроку игр данного жанра, почти вся серия Chicken Invaders является большой удачей именно для обычных, а не хардкорных игроков.

Возвращаясь к первой Chicken Invaders и причине, почему я считаю, что эту часть можно пропустить. Причиной этого является невообразимо однотипный, а потому скучный, контент. Разработчики предложили три варианта запуска игры: оригинальную версию 1999 года, ремастер 2023 года и обновленную, т.е. не ремастер, версию, которая была выпущена для всех частей серии. Начнём с того что оригинальная версия не поддерживаем геймпад и тормозит настолько сильно, что играть просто невозможно. Поэтому смело переходим к ремастеру, который визуально изменяет игру не сильно и делает её похожей на оригинальную версию второй часть Chicken Invaders. Если оригинальную вторую часть я прошёл, то тут я не стал проходить то ли из-за однообразия, то ли из-за сложности. Играя в ремастер 2023 года, который, как я сказал, не является обновлённой версией, мы встречаем довольно сложную игру. Главная проблема хардкорности, это очень быстро летящие вертикально метеориты и куры, которые появляются в двух волнах очень близко к игроку, настолько близко, что это чистый рандом не угодить в запущенное ими яйцо. Я дошёл до 98 уровня и, к сожалению, зафейлил. Перепроходить я не стал, т.к. игра в целом скучная. Ах да, я же ещё не пояснил, почему же она скучная и в чём главная проблема первой части Chicken Invaders.

Итак, у нас 100 волн, из которых только 5 (пять!), это уникальные волны. И именно это и является главной проблемой – невероятно сильное однообразие волн. Такого однообразия я ещё ни разу в этой серии не встречал. И пусть мне очень понравилась вся серия, включая спорную бесплатную часть, но первая Chicken Invaders является до невозможности скучной даже для такого игрока как я (не могу назвать себя поклонником этой серии, но мне определённо очень понравилась Chicken Invaders, вернее последние части). Даже для меня это было уже слишком. Но может быть обновлённая (не ремастер) версия первой Chicken Invaders выглядит лучше? Именно об обновлённой версии я и говорю. Я прошёл только обновлённую версию Chicken Invaders, но даже она под конец невероятно сильно наскучила, ведь обновлённая версия не изменила волны, а просто обновила внешний вид игры, сделав её похожей на 5 часть, и немного упростила игровой процесс, но суть волн осталась неизменной. Это всё те же 100 волн, из которых только 5, это действительно уникальные волны. Всё остальное является постоянным повтором. Кстати, это же касается и босса, который тут представлен в единственном виде, т.е. один и тот же босс появляется в каждой 10 волне. Разница заключается лишь в количестве XP, толщины этого самого босса. По итогу получается, что эта часть будет интересна лишь самым преданным фанатам серии, а для всех остальных, кто не пришёл сюда по зову ностальгии, это очень однообразная и скучная игра, даже если проходить новую и облегчённую версию. Да даже если рассматривать игру в качестве хардкора, лучше поиграть в бесплатную Chicken Invaders Universe, где этого хардкора (плюс разнообразия) хоть отбавляй. Однообразие – вот главная проблема этой части.

I loved this game as a kid. It's basically a poultry version of space invaders. It's mindless fun, but fun nonetheless. It's simpler but more difficult than any other game in the series. It also has an infinite number of levels and doesn't end after 100 waves. I love the old graphics!

The game that started it all! Chicken Invaders 1 (1999)!

Quick shout out to InterAction Studios for bringing back this 90s banger on Steam and remastering it in the spirit of the newer games. This remaster of Chicken Invaders 1 hits all the right notes for both nostalgia and challenge! It's like designed to teach you a specific skill, literally like clearing 10 stages that progressively get harder—and boy, it forces you to get good real quick. Each wave builds on the last, making every run feel like a true test of skill. Even though there are 3 meteor and 4 literally identical waves per stage, times ten.

One thing I loved is how generous the game is with keys. You'll have plenty to spend on cool customization options, and trust me, the added customization in this remaster makes a huge difference. It’s a pleasant surprise, considering it’s implemented in the very first game in the series. You can unlock weapons and satellites right from wave 1 (yeah, it sounds like cheating, but you’ll thank me later) if you don't want to end up with no satellites and only the basic red gun even in the remaster, if you just want that 90s mechanic but new gen feel.

Now, onto the difficulty. This game takes “tough” to a whole new level because you can only move left and right. It’s way harder than you’d expect, especially in those tight spots where you’re basically forced to lose a life. But hey, that invincibility tool that replaces the missile? Absolute game-changer. You’ll need it for sure.

And let’s talk achievements: this remaster has 20 achievements—the most in the series so far. Six of them are tied to difficulty settings, meaning you'll have to play the game at least six times to unlock everything. Yeah, it gets repetitive, but if you’re into mastering a game, you’ll love the challenge.

If you're taking on higher difficulties, my advice is to use the Heavy bomber spaceship and the pink frying gun (with no overheat, though it costs you 50% of your points but ehh). Trust me, you'll need all the firepower you can get. It makes a massive difference when the difficulty spikes, especially Superstar Hero.

Overall, Chicken Invaders 1 Remastered is challenging, generous with rewards, and surprisingly deep in customization. The difficulty might frustrate casual players, but if you're up for the grind, you'll find a lot to love here. Don’t forget to gear up from the start!

A very good remaster of the original that stays true to it in a lot of ways. The same 10 waves are repeated over and over, you have only one weapon, you can't move completely freely. It even has an option for endless waves like the original! It's Chicken Invaders 1 with the modern Chicken Invaders graphics and fluidity, which makes it good enough.

Childhood game, played in the 2000s era. All I played was just the demo up to level 10 and now it’s out on steam. Crazy how I remembered the game from just pure memory unlock the day before it comes out so it was an instant purchase. Def worth the price, hilarious story, and epic gameplay. I love eating me some good chicken

[h2](2025) Episode 1: The Saga Begins [/h2]

There's not much to be said other than it is just the original game combined with the elements of the lately released episodic rereleases in the franchise, thus making it modernized for today's standards. No new story or anything. Just the good old shoot-em up.

The gameplay itself is simplistic in design and faithful to its predecessor, keeping the player's movement limited to strafing left and right with a progressive increase in difficulty with each stage, while also enhancing the well-known formula with new additions that spice up the experience. Namely:
- Weapons that are taken from later installments of the franchise with each one having its own unique trait
- Revamped controls don't feel slow nor sluggish and mouse movement is now fast and sharp
- Enhanced performance with the game running at 144+ FPS and video settings can be customized to your needs
- Updated graphics. Duh.
...and more.

The biggest change with this version is the addition of keys, which you collect to unlock more customization features to your spaceship, weapons, or even modifiers to tweak the game's difficulty to a higher level, if you like challenging yourself. This makes the game grindy as some of the items require a high amount of keys, but a few playthroughs on the hardest difficulty (needs to be purchased with the aforementioned keys, sigh) should earn you a satisfactory amount.

Also, keeping it faithful to the original, a local 2-player mode is available so you and your friend can blast and indulge in some poultry payback together on the same computer. But fear not, as support for Remote Play Together has been implemented into the game, so dragging your online friends via intangible means to play the space chicken game is very much feasible.

Also, as mentioned before, you can export your purchased copy of this game to Chicken Invaders Universe and have it there as DLC. It's pretty much the same thing except it's just in CIU... and you can host multiplayer sessions there with like... 99 players but good luck with that.

[h2](2023) Chicken Invaders Remastered [/h2]

Okay, fair. You want to play the game as it was back then but playing the 1999 release runs like a slob on newer hardware.

This one is pretty much self-explanatory and I won't be going into that many details.
Following the fans' request to update/remaster the first entry, this is the result of the yearning. The game that will not run like a slob. The only real updates to this, besides the graphical enhancement, are mouse controls, revamped main menu and a new musical track that plays along your experience (you can keep it vanilla and uncheck the 'in-game music' option to disable it).

The downside of mouse controls is that you cannot fly fast as your speed is capped to match the original's flying maneuvers. This was the developer's intention. Thankfully, an icon shows up that shows your exact mouse movements and it can be customized!

Also, more of a fun fact, but the high score tables collects scores from both the remaster and the OG game.
If you want to play the remaster and then move to the OG, the scores are very much kept.

[h2](1999) Chicken Invaders [/h2]

This is the original experience that kickstarted the whole franchise and the one that got me hooked.
Standard shoot-em up set in space with chickens as your opponents. Shoot everything on the screen and earn the highest score.

Sadly, with time comes change and since this game runs on DirectX 7.0 and the latest versions of windows emulate the DirectDraw part of that version of DirectX, this renders the framerate and overall experience unbearable with lags that will give you an itch. It's a shame that there are no official fixes to this, even with the Steam release, but there are workarounds!
You can use a piece of software called DGVoodoo2 that consists of all the DirectX/graphical wizardry to make old games run better on newer hardware. Not only that but it also helps stretch out the game's resolution to your monitor's native resolution which gets rid of all the letterboxing (at the cost of making the image slightly blurry, of course).

I won't be giving this game a rating since I don't feel like it.
It's the game of my childhood, of course I love it very much.

At the end of the day, I know that you got this just to get the same game in CIU.

...I sure did.

A classic that was brought back and presented in a new light, you're essentially only paying for the new 2025 Episode, as the 1999 original and 2023 remaster are available for free on the InterAction studios website. (You also get the original and remaster included when getting the game on Steam.) However if you are playing the 1999 original, do keep in mind that it runs like absolute dog water on modern versions of Windows, but you can still get the original to run pretty alright using an external tool named dgVoodoo 2. There's a few tutorials on how to do that for CI1.

If you are playing the 2023 remaster then you should have no trouble running it under modern versions of Windows, it is still pretty much the same as the original, however the game now has a proper main menu and all the cutscenes have been redone from scratch, along with some other tiny improvements, the gameplay is fixed at a 27 FPS cap, but at least you don't need anything else to be able to run it properly.

Now for the Episode remake, it pretty much follows the same formula as the other Episode remakes that have been released earlier this year, however this time the game has an entirely different look from the original, all the models have been re-rendered in the artstyle of the modern Chicken Invaders games, but done in a way so that they still resemble the original game's look.

The game can be played with up to a maximum of 150 FPS and you now actually have a music track fanning you in the background, which is a medley of all CI games' main themes, on top of that, you have the choice to play the game using the original games' spaceship design, sadly the Ion Blaster doesn't have a green color, this version of the game also has an ending along with a cutscene, tying it up with the other games in the series.

If you want to play cooperatively with someone who's further away from you and don't want to use CIU (Chicken Invaders Universe) for that, then Steam Remote Play will work just fine.

And as I'm sure some of you may know, if you have a CIU account then you can export your purchase of Episode 1 directly to your CIU account so you can play it as DLC in that game with your own spaceship and equipment only present in that game. (As well as be able to play it with up to 99 consecutive players, but good luck with that.)
