Champions of Breakfast is a fast-paced arcade shoot 'em up where you save breakfast to save the world. Take control of a kitchen appliance as you battle your way through the house to defeat jealous adversaries who have stolen your sweet sweet ingredients. You will launch bacon, dispense eggs, defeat laser firing remote controls, battle a bathtub, and hopefully save breakfast in the process.

This is a good little highscore game. The game mechanics are really awesome. I particularly like how you have separate control over the crosshairs and the movement at the same time. It really extends the longevity of survivability in each level and causes you make it to the next round by a hair. If you're looking for a high intense, highscore pursuit kind of game, look no further, this is a good one. It is a one level game, that resets from the beginning every time, but the game mechanics and constant changing enemies are really intuitive and makes the replayability long lasting. I like this game. I look forward to seeing more promising games coming from Pirate Software. There's a lot of potential here.

tldr the game is kind of basic, and the dev is bad

i received this game for free by watching the dude who made it. I already had some personal grievances with him and i wont support the game of a person who treats others badly, and after all that has happened, i even more so, dont support this game, i wont fill the pockets of a guy who mistreated his coworkers, spread misinformation, and refuses to accept criticism. sadly he must learn the hard way that what hes doing is wrong, and that he must grow past this childishness.

I cannot believe they are charging money for this game. I know its only 3$, but I have played flash games more fun and engaging than this dumpster fire of a video game. Its so boring, predictable, and looks atrocious. The way obstacles fly at you is just overly predictable and lazy. I don't know how this is a 'company'. This looks like a video game that a university student would make for an assignment, not a game that you would charge money for on steam. I didn't want to refund this, but I have to on good conscience. Do not buy this game! You are wasting your time, money and effort. Literally, there are a plethora of free games offering infinitely more value than this poor excuse of a 'game'.

I'm not going to mention any PirateSoftware's recent drama, but I am writing this review because of it. I haven't played this game in a while, so if I get anything wrong, then it's just my memory.

The game isn't horrible, but it isn't worth spending money on. The controls are great, but there's VERY little progression in the game--as far as I can remember, the only real progression is unlocking new kitchen appliances to play as. I get that it's a roguelike, but come on! The game also gets boring after a while, not just because of the lack of progression, but also since none of the bosses nor enemies seem original in the slightest. They're all just different objects with easy-to-dodge attacks. There's also only one song in the game, which plays constantly and gets tiring.

the trailer shows all of the content in the game. it loops roughly 10 minutes worth of gameplay, and it just gets a little faster when you're 30 minutes into a run. i am not grinding through all of those auto-scrollers again to get to the part that is mildly entertaining.

the game performs fairly poorly, with high input lag on a 3000$ pc and 500$ monitor. it also crashed on me once. i think the framerate is also capped at 60

the game has a difficult tag, but it's pretty easy, even with all spices on. the hard part is not looking away because you're bored.

if you are brand new to the genre, maybe you could enjoy it, but i don't.

most of my deaths are because i'm so bored while playing that i'm looking at my other monitor. there's very little content to begin with, and HALF of the content is an auto scroller or a filler wave that you can't take damage on.

the game explains nothing to you, and even after repeating the same content for the 10th time, i still don't know what most things do.

i tried to have fun with it by speedrunning it, but the game is mostly just an auto scroller so the time difference primarily comes down to rng. if you think high score would be good, well the leaderboards are obviously hacked so who knows what the real records are, and who knows if it's easily cheatable with cheatengine. oh wait, you can just pause buffer so who needs cheat engine

is it worth 3$? no. 49 cents? yeah sure, but the lowest it goes is 1.50 so gg. not a scam but not recommended

Boring.
I purchased this a while ago, tried it, found it bland, moved on and then forgot I even had it in my library.

Before I start ranting let me apologize for any spelling mistakes and the like, I'm not a native speaker and I'm currently dealing with an affectionate dog. I know, what a terrible struggle lol.

Anyway, the game is fine but nothing that I think makes it worth it over other games.
Graphics wise, it's quite simple, there's nothing bad with it but also nothing outstanding.
The UI does get a bit ugly after a while, the background and font makes it look like a generic mobile game.
The enemy design isn't interesting either, it's quite literally unanimated drawings of objects. They rotate around, I guess, but that's, again, not interesting.
Difficulty wise, I found it fine but due to the lack of creativity in gameplay, it became more of a chore than anything. Talking about gameplay: there's plenty of bullet hell games where the enemies have multiple phases that are distinct to each other making new gameplay elements being more relevant (like having to dodge an unavoidable attack, for instance). This is not the case for this game as far as I've seen.

The good thing about this game is that it's cheap, but you are indeed getting what you paid for.

As a reference, I'd recommend games like "Just Shapes & Beats", "Enter the Gungeon", "Ikaruga" and "Tiny Rogues" (that one is in early access, though).
I think those games take the bullet hell genre and mix it up enough to make them stand out and be interesting.

Either way, if you just want to shoot things and unlock achievements, this is fine.
I personally think it's an example of a game that technically works. But I don't play games to play them, I play them to have fun and be inspired creativily, be emotionally invested, etc.
So from my perspective, I cannot honestly recommend a game (or a piece of entertainment) under the basis of "It's not that bad", especially when you are paying for it.

TLDR: The game is not interesting enough for me to want to continue playing it and I'd feel weird recommending it.

It's a cheap game but still not worth the price.

The game is a top-down twin-stick shooter that isn't particularly challenging or fun. It looks like a flash game you'd have played on Newgrounds or Armor Games in 2009 but without the addictive staying power of many of the classic games on those sites. Spend the extra $7 and buy Ikaruga or spend the extra $2 and buy Vampire Survivors. This game isn't worth playing for more than 15 mins.

I haven't played this in like months... and just revisited a bit ago. So take this with a grain of salt, perfect for your eggs.

Bought this game for full price ~2 years ago (3 dubloons!), and even looking back, it's kinda... not great. It's simple, which isn't bad, but it doesn't do anything that makes it worth your time. It's okay if you like bullet-hell games, I guess? The artstyle is pretty nice, yeah. The OST isn't even a banger though... zero memorable tracks, they're all mid.

It's difficult, for me at least. I remember getting tilted (skill issue)... but I attribute that to it being a bullet-hell, my 3rd least favorite genre of game.

Genuinely, 3/10. Charming premise, Mid execution, Iffy Ost, and no point to playing except achievements.

Not that it changes my score, but I have to add that the creator blatantly lies and spreads misinformation about a (morally correct) cause, all because he didn't fully get it... So that's something to consider. I'd usually say "Seperate the art from the artist!"... But if art is Mid, why bother?

This game uses the achievements as the way to save progress which is an awful idea for so many reasons and is basically an extremely anti consumer form of DRM. This system means there is no ability to start over if you want to replay or even go back to any previous point. Stay away from this game.

Not sure what I was thinking when I bought this slop. Stuff like Cookie Clicker, Adventure Capitalist and even Banana have more sustenance than this. Also I am not keen on dining on rump roast but I will eat Jason's posterior after he eats the corn out of my excrement. I refuse to refer to a man child as Thor. I am glad that petition is gaining traction probably because Jason was such a twonk about it. Perhaps his game companies name is a suggestion. The developer of this game has gotten himself into some controversy, recently, but I made my purchase and played for around half an hour without knowledge of this. I'd had my eye on this game for a bit, being a cheap game with Steam Trading Cards, but I was totally unaware of this until I'd put the game down.

Figured I wanted to get ahead of that before I actually got to the review, because my negative review isn't really affected by that.

It's a cute, easy little SHMUP that can be played on the Steam Deck. Levels are repetitive, there's only a handful of enemy patterns, and the progression system isn't really explained at all in-game. There's no manual, nothin'.

At the end of every stage, after beating the boss, you're presented with 3 choices for a permanent upgrade. What do they do? Doesn't tell you. You can't hover over the item for a description, so what I /imagine/ is intended be a strategic choice is you looking at 3 food items whose appearances may not correlate with effect, and either look at a user guide or just fumble blindly.

Apparently there's some fancy 'trick' the developer thought was kinda cutesy by tying game progression to achievements. For several reasons, this is kind of a silly idea, but it does raise a barrier for any players who may want to reset their progress for one reason or another.

It's 3 bucks, so it's not like you're wasting a whole bunch of money, but what you're getting is pretty feature-bare with some questionable design decisions.

The game was written using poorly structured code. An example is how it uses Steam Achievements as a means to save progress. This is a terrible practice for several reasons.

1. There is no flexibility or reversibility for the saves.
2. It's a bad security practice as players can use 3rd party tools to manipulate progress and potentially other vulnerabilities.
3. It ties the game to the steam platform which can cause problems if the platform changes or goes down.

As someone who cares about game preservation I cannot recommend this product in it's current state.

i know this is pretty much never gonna get another update but, i can't stand the controller settings they are not intuitive at all in game play, that is when the left joystick isn't controlling my laptops volume control on up and down or when trying to use other controls that somehow enable the laptops magnifier app, when using mouse and keyboard the response is sluggish and almost made me sick, and i don't even get motion sick normally. not gonna play this game much if at all, but that is not to say someone out there won't enjoy it, i'm sure there's plenty who enjoy this type of game.

Hi Thor,

I play Champions of Breakfast with my daughter sitting on my lap. She’s in charge of the mouse, shooting enemies, while I am in charge of the keyboard, dodging bullets. She also picks selections of spices from the rack for me to play. Most of the time, she picks all the spices.

Thank you for making this game. I never thought I would play this game with my daughter, and she is loving it. However, I haven’t decided yet whether to convert her into a fellow goblin or not.

Super Fun game. Play for an hour to unlock all the main characters and spices. turn all the spices on. Play the game as intended :)

This is a great Bullet Hell game. Very creative. Well executed. Quick to unlock all the main characters and spices.

Some times it feels impossible to dodge hazards, especially with some of the bigger appliances and a screen filled with paint blobs. It's also really annoying that the spice rack bonuses are reset to off after quitting the game.

Overall, well worth the couple bucks. The game is a lot of fun, quick to learn, has relatively easy patterns to master, and your appliance gets upgrades that help steam role your enemies. Will keep this one installed for when I need a quick gaming break to recharge.

This is a fun arcade style bullet hell game and a surprising amount of power up variety. The character selection and the ability to customize the difficulty of any given run through the spice rack is also a nice feature adding depth to what could have become a stale experience otherwise. All and all not a bad game but I won't recommend for the following reasons:
No description of the power ups:
At times you are given a choice or power ups to choose but there is no description of what they actually do in game or between games. Same for the special powers.
No controller support:
Store states you can use a controller but the default key bindings are janky and there's no options to change them which makes it unusable.
1 - 2 hours of play time:
3 dollars is probably a fair price for the game if you have kids that need to be entertained.

In my personal opinion, Champions of Breakfast is a great callback to the days of Arcade and early console scrollers. I love the old feeling, pixel graphics, awesome soundtrack, and the difficulty of a bullet-hell. If you make it through the game thinking it was easy, add some spice to your game (seriously use modifiers in the spice rack to make it harder). I would definitely recommend this game to anyone looking for a trip down memory lane or a challenging bullet-hell game.

I discovered this game after discovering the Twitch page. What I can say is the game is very simple but very fun. Nothing like a classic style arcade high score game. Easily worth the price and I am going to continue to play it.

Possible suggestions:
Make it so you can edit the spice rack after you die without needing to go back to the main menu
Save spice rack choices on game close?
Enable all button for spice rack

i've been seeing the developer play a lot of it on stream to test it and it made me want to try it !
My advice ? Try it =D
it's a really neat bullet hell type game with upgrades
and my second advice ? grab all the power ups you see (you don't have to but when you first run it do it)

a nice little game made by an amazing gamedev crew... it's amazing that the developer has a birthday every day and does not manage to grow old witch give sus vibes of bot... also he's fixation with worms and the number 7 it's nothing less than comendable... 7's and worm's all around the house. his comunity is nothing less than the best goblins that you can find in the market... and the main developer's voice is nothing less than breath and wife taking... i give this game a potato out of feet's... i love it. dont play it. tons of fun ;).

My first bullet-hell game, pretty mild as far as those go. Great indicators, bullets don't blend in with environment and all round great graphic design.

The "spice rack" contains spices (modifiers) which alter the gameplay elements (and increases the difficulty) in exchange for a bonus to total score, which is great to "spice" things up or when trying for that high-score.

The music is great, and keeps you on your toes.

I may not be an expert on bullet-hell games, but if you are looking for a starting point into bullet hells I believe this game is for you.
