Too many of the choices are just picking the same thing over and over again.
I played this along time ago and it was one of my first COG game. I have since played multiples and it sits comfortably at my second favorite of all the games. The most important part of any of these games is the choices, and in this game the choices seem to matter, which is ironic considering the overall story being about choice or fate, freedom vs. force of will. For a game about fate, it never pushes you one way or another but allows you to make a choice, and in my playthrough came to a very climatic end that felt appropriate for the content.
I also like how the game allowed me to add drama into the romance without completely sacrificing the romance. I really liked the romance I ended up going with.
“Champion of the Gods” was a passable read with many interesting concepts. However, too little time was spent on each part of the story before introducing new concepts, places, and characters. As such, I couldn’t help but feel rushed along as I was reading, and as a result, I never felt particularly close to any of the characters nor did I feel like my love interest and I ever grew close.
In short, I don’t regret reading through the game a few times, but had more time been spent fleshing out the characters, the story would have been much improved in my opinion. Especially the love interests would’ve benefited from some more literary affection. (5/10)
A child's guide to free will vs. fate or destiny as some would call it. It reminded me of the old Saturday morning cartoons. Spoiler alert---Five minutes after meeting the beautiful princess he is kissing her in front of his long time girl friend. Fate? or is he just a jerk? If this type of question keeps you up at night this is the cartoon for you.

The plot was a very interesting action adventure. The stat mechanics were relatively simple. Once you realize you have to make sure to pick a choice that reflects your highest personality traits and stats, it's not too hard to be victorious. Before I got that down I had some stress from failing a battle and wondering what would happen if I lost again, but that was a good thing to keep me invested.
The checks for each encounter were minimal. They would have been more satisfying if they were designed to have more stages with outcomes that didn't seem so black and white. Still, I didn't feel railroaded though it's hard to say for sure on one play through (which only took about 3 hours).
Maybe because of the fast pace or the short story length, it felt lacking some in immersion. The relationships didn't feel very deep, including the romance. But the setting was described fairly well with appropriate garb, materials, and customs. There were also some thought provoking choices that made me focus more on what I thought about the people around me.
What I enjoyed most was the lore. Mythology was my first love and the way the author interpreted the interplay between mortals, the gods, and the fates was genius. I loved exploring that world design through the main character. That's what made this story for me.
I give this one a 7/10 recommendation and I'm down for the sequel!

This game was extremely short compared to some "choice of" games that I've played, which surprised me. After playing through it once, I felt as if I'd seen just about everything the game had to offer. Having paid full price for this game, I felt a little ripped off. I don't know if it was worth a full $5. In terms of the story, there wasn't too much depth or complexity. The romance was bland, the bad guys total pushovers, and the gods themselves hardly present.
Not all "choice of" games are bad. There are plenty I've tried that I've really loved, but I wouldn't recommend Champion of the Gods.

Me gusto, la influencia de la cultura de la Antigua Grecia esta muy bien implementada, sobre todo el tema del destino. Y me caí de culo cuando descubrí que este juego tendrá secuela. Un buen título, quizás no mejores de otros que tienen secuela, pero está bien. La única falla que le encuentro es la falta de conectividad con otros personajes, lo cual se evidencia por la falta de una barra de relación con ellos.

About as forgetable as a story can be. It tries so much to follow on the coattails of old hero fables that it forgets to really do anything.
This game was good at the beginning! There are a lot of impactful choices and you feel like your really powerful. However there are also times when I think I made a good decision based on my Strength/Health build but they completely fail to such a stupid degree.
The overall theme of the story is cool and it has a lot ancient Greek style flavor within its unique story.
Unfortunately the romance in this game is to be desired for, they seem somewhat hallow, they really lack emotional depth with the people I was interested in.
The Story does grasp that you're a powerful champion of the gods pretty well, and not many things surprise you and overcome you. But It wasn't until the very end when making two consecutive mistakes caused me to have a game over and have to restart the game. It was awful and It's what caused me to not really get back into the game.
So beware.
If you loved reading the Odyssey or other stories from the Greek myths, this choose-your-pathway book should serve you well. There are gods and fates and heroes fighting monsters against great odds. There are battles, plagues, and magic. Most important, there are choices. Are you male or female? Do you love man, woman, or both? Are you loyal to the gods, your people, or yourself? There are many other choices as well.
One play through takes about two hours. When you have ended your story, there is a nice graph at the end that shows you what choices you made. These choices affect the outcome, which means the game has replayabililty.
Though the writing isn't Shakespeare, or even Tolkien, it is competent enough for this simple tale. So if you don't mind a lot of reading, read yourself a game. If you haven't read much more than traffic signs since high school, you will want to avoid this game like a Greek hero avoids domestic encumbrances. But make sure to pick it up cheap. I can't see anyone getting through this game more than thrice.

[b]Champion of Gods[/b] is yet another game from the Choice of Games, a company that prides itself in delivering the most compelling text adventures and creating countless lifelike worlds.
[h2]Plot and Setting[/h2]
This adventure takes place in a world inspired by ancient Greece. The society is ruled with a similar model to self governing cities like Athens. The Pantheon is also heavily inspired by the classic Roman and Greek gods and mythology.
[code]The plot description purposefully skips some events, in order to not spoil and ruin the experience, but still provide its core to a reader who might be interested.[/code]
It’s all set in motion, when the main character awakes to a great danger and feels drawn to it, knowing their time to shine has come. This unexpected surge of power is immediately cause of great concern.
As they face a journey to seek the Oracle’s sight, the seers reveal that the main character is indeed the Champion that the gods were awaiting. This means the protagonist will have to leave the village soon and start their quest: cleansing the lands of Agossa from the leftover threats of the First Age, when humans were monstrous creatures with magical powers.
The youngster is led to a congress of gods. They are surprised as with the events of past days Daggoras, the god of chaos is trying to meddle with the hero’s fate.
The time for the protagonist’s departure has come and with it the perils. The Demena Pass on their way to Kelinos is rumored to be infested by unnatural creatures. There they encounter the first trial to be cleared.
In the town, they are offered a renomated place in the Kelinos’s army, together with the required training. Here the character will also encounter their romantic interest.
Another encounter with the gods occurs, where they point to the champion’s next target. The success in this quest will also grant the champion the blessings for their marriage, if they decided to pursue a relationship.
They reach an island and fight another ancient monster. As it is defeated, a menacing green miasma heads towards Kelinos. This calamity is revealed to have transformed the people of the town into stone as well, slowly leading them towards death.
To save the city and their loved one, the champion has no other choice than conquer the secrets of Minodia, a legendary town of healers.
On their way they meet again the God of Chaos in disguise. He finally uncovers his goal to them. As long as the Destiny bounds everyone’s choices, there is no freedom. This meeting gives the other gods the possibility to capture their unruly brother.
As the champion approaches the queen of Minodia, their plea for help is misinterpreted as an attempt to steal the source of their magic. This magic is then revealed to have a treacherous nature to those who are exposed to it for too long.
The hero returns to Kelinos and is joined by their remaining family for the wedding, but it is interrupted. The gods need their help once more, urgently.
Here takes place the last encounter with Daggoras This is the where the champion will thake the last and most important choice, no matter if it might bring glory or doom.
[h2]Philosophical and Moral Dilemma [/h2]
The name of this game is unique, as for once it does not start with “A Choice of…”. After having completed the game, the reason behind this is clear.
The story is a reflection about the freedom of choice and whether it actually exists. Just like the champion is tied to their destiny, so is the player who has to follow the plot, until that one final decision. This will give the player a glimpse of hope in possibility to make their own choices.
[b]Every choice is no longer such[/b], when it has moral implications - if a task is not completed, it will influence other people, including those dearest to the hero. The Destiny leads to a greater good, but at the same time, with no Chaos, no actual freedom of choice, [b]the world is purely mechanical[/b] and there is no further purpose to it than existing. This is interestingly enough shown in the Underworld, which is ruled by mechanoids and such are the Weavers.
In some points the coherency of the plot is somewhat lacking. It is said that gods should not intervene with the champions' fate, but they help them multiple times all the same. Does it mean that the Destiny is in fact imperfect and needs to be constantly fueled, or does it represent the world’s dichotomy between the Chaos and Order?
[h2]Mechanics[/h2]
As many other Choice of Games stories, it is [b]inclusive[/b] with the possibility of naming the character and choosing a male, female or gender neutral noun, as well as showing many different views on sexuality.
The choices influence both character and physical attributes - resilience, strength and speed. While usually this creates some choice restrictions and has a major influence on the trials, this game seems to have [b]a different approach[/b] due to its nature.
[h2]Writing Style and Terminology[/h2]
Sentences flow nicely, now long and descriptive, now brief and decisive. World building comes with new terms that can be tied to the ancient word it’s inspired by, making them [b]instantly clear, yet fresh[/b].
Linguistic register is medium-high, with words that are comprehensible, but still detain a certain flavor to them.
The [b]time is not linea[/b]r as the story on several occasions just skips forwards. Some flashbacks are also used when needed to focus on the story or to deepen the narration and show visions of prophetic nature.

Being a huge fan of CYOA games and a Greek mythology lover, I was looking forward to finally try this game. Reviews praised all its aspects, so I was certain I'm in for a treat. Sadly, this certainty was brutally crushed.
CYAO games are always hit and miss. You may like the plot, but dislike writing; adore lore, yet feel bored by the story. Champion of the Gods somewhat managed to miss all the hooks that usually grab me. I was immensely disappointed by pretty much everything: the uninteresting and predictable plot, dry writing, flat characters, nonsensical "romances"... The only thing that stands out for me is a variety of choices. English is not my mother language, so I read slower than native speakers; when I checked the time I've spent on the game, it was already more than two hours, so refund was out of the question. I tried to like this game, I really did, but oh man, the reading felt like a chore.

Wow! What a fantastic read and experience. The choices given seem to ACTUALLY have impact, which most games these days only advertise but don't truly deliver on. Seriously, if you want a game where choices matter this is it. I know some people may argue on the whole "it's a book not a game" thing but dude there is stat progression and role playing and stuff. It's a game and a good one!
Now they just need to add how this has a sequel for sale on the store page here, I'm about to play that shortly and I hope it's as good. It's twice as long in word count so I hope it can deliver with more quality when they increased the quantity.
This will be my first review I've ever written for a game on Steam, so sorry if it's not as good as the others.
I'd say the game is ok. The story is pretty good and of a decent length. There is depth to it as well, going beyond a simple "Gods Good, Chaos Bad" or "Chaos Good, Gods Bad" narrative. Instead, it does the thing that all RPGs/CYOA games should do: Let you lecture it.
Which is better? Humans having a predefined start and end point, or us having complete control over our Fate? If there's a chance we could mess up and get a bad outcome, should we be allowed to do so? Or should there be something to ensure we always end up with the best outcome, even if its at the cost of something we love? Are the God horrid dictators who are afraid of mortals, or are they simply looking out for creatures who couldn't possibly understand them? Does the main villain actually care for humanity, or is he just furthering his own goals?
I also thought the action scenes were done well, though they tend to be very quick and not go too much into detail.
However, I do have some gripes. It feels like Romance in the game is useless unless you chase a specific one, the ending kind of feels rushed, and it seems like you're expected to go for a specific one. And there's no way to tell what specific stats are when they become important.
Overall though, the game is decent. I say give it one or two playthroughs.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this game. I saw the positive reviews and decided to give it a chance, and I am soooo happy I did. It's a stunning gem of a game from Choice of Games, something that really helps prove they can provide us with games where your choices matter and you manage your own destiny, something one doesn't often find among similar AAA games that offer choice.
Your choices matter heavily and shape your relationships with those around you and the Gods. Will you become a true and loyal champion or will you reject the aid of the Gods and choose your own destiny untainted by their guiding hand? Champion of the Gods provides you with many paths and a great and in-depth story and world to become immersed in. I loved every minute of it.
For any vet CoG players or even those new to the company, this is a must try.

It does the whole "heroic destiny" thing fairly well, and the story is pretty engaging. My only complaint is that the romance is somewhat railroaded, but that wasn't my focus going into this game anyways. 10/10 would kill Destiny again.

An interesting narrative, the game is pretty enjoyable. Although it's a very good game, especially if you are interested in text based games like it, definitely buy it on sale. Personally speaking, I wouldn't buy games like these for the price they are at by this developer, but it's just a matter of what kind of money you have. If you are strapped financially at the moment, this might not be the game for you. There are a lot of games with better bang for buck, but if that's not a concern, I would definitely buy it and play through it at least once.

This game is racially incorrect. How can I bring my father back to life if I've never met him?
I liked it, it was good. It did feel a bit too much like an imitation of Hercules's labors (with less tasks, and I don't know if it's always a penance story - I just happened to decide to *spoilers!!!* murder my father, so it felt that way. But I don't know if you have to kill him).
Anyway, back on track. The story was ok, it's really more like 5 seperate stories that are vaguely linked. If you're thinking of buyng this only because it has something to do with gods, I will warn you: it might look like it's connected to Greek mythology, and the stories, as I said, resemble some famous myths, but THESE AREN"T THE GREEK GODS. I haven't a clue where the author came up with their names, but don't go thinking this is a personal Percy Jackson. It's not.
But to end my incessant rambling - yeah, it was good. Try not to lose, because that ruined the entire thing for me, personally.
If you are at all interested in Interactive fiction games then pick up this game. However, if you are not a fan of reading then this game is not for you.
The story is rich, engaging and well-written. Choices you make directly affect your stats/character and the ends that you are able to unravel. I'm looking forward to finding all the differences between the routes.

Try Choice of Robot or Tin Star instead. The early stuff was better than the new garbage being churned out.

游戏的故事是这样的，玩家是一个普通的村民，在一次野兽袭击中，发现自己拥有非凡的能力，之后被证实属于背负特殊使命的神灵选中的英雄。原来世界上所有人的一生都被命运编织者所掌控，但有少部分人的命运干系重大，牵系了太多人的命运，他们可以自己掌握前进的道路，不会被神灵干涉，这种人会被选中，去执行特殊的使命——整个故事算是一篇英雄传奇。
自选式体验方式当然是有很强代入感的，玩家的选择十分之多，比如被捉进监狱时，可以用宝物魅惑守卫，可以战斗抵抗，可以言语威胁，可以掩护斥候逃走之后投降等待救援，还可以在处决之前求得海神的援助等等，还有自己决定战斗策略，自己选择冒险路线，自己挑选勾搭对象等。根据玩家的选择，有一整套对角色的评价体系，其中有一些是代表战斗力的力量、韧性和敏捷，一些代表着对立的倾向，比如残忍与仁慈、欺骗与诚实、冲动和理性，还有一些属于整体评价，比如胜利、功绩、神灵的干涉等，这一套数据展现了玩家的特质，会影响到游戏的进程，还是很有角色扮演的感觉的，这个系统是这个公司这类游戏的一贯特色了。
游戏中很多关键剧情都挺打动人，比如老女人Mogaria为了救主角，杀了身为执政官的主角父亲，被村民驱逐，而我在出门时选择快马追很久追上她，她此时已濒临崩溃，失魂落魄地在路上，我告诉她她是我最忠实的朋友，当时觉得这一幕好感动；在一个峡谷里遇到个妹子，她非常热情地邀请我们在她的洞穴里住一晚，说她和家人住在这，晚上她的家人能回来，等到天黑，妹子有一种狂热的期待表情让人不安，这时听到一串脚步声，在黄昏的黑暗中我看到远处来了一个黑影，靠近一点发现这个黑影有很多很多脚，正要提醒妹子，却发现她眼中冒出期待已久的狂喜，原来这就是她的家人.....当时我就感觉毛骨悚然....总之呢，游戏有很多这样的情节，非常吸引人。
现在肯-福莱特的讲述一战的历史小说《巨人的陨落》好像中文版推出不到一年，有人说这是一战版的《战争与和平》，因为同样是围绕若干家族变迁和一系列角色的命运人生，反映了一个时代的政治、军事和社会生活。但是从文学的角度讲，《巨人的陨落》显然比托尔斯泰的巨作相差太多，剧情转折快充满戏剧性，描述场景的文字较少，人物描绘更是逊色，但也正是如此，读者能迅速地在几页十几页故事内就能见到情节转折和起伏，能一直被吸引着读下去，若非如此，又怎么能吸引习惯于这种节奏的现代读者呢。这个游戏也是如此，故事文本不算差，达到了一般水平了，但是达不到文学的高度，因为要照顾游戏节奏，要在1-3页的叙事中掀起玩家的兴趣，给出玩家抉择的关键点，所以就不能有大段大段的细节描述了。

游戏的核心内容是，玩家在游戏中途遇到了诸神的终极对手和自己的仇人——混乱之神Daggoras，他告诉玩家惊天的秘密，其实命运编织者并不是真正的神，而是经历了第一世纪拥有自由力量的人类造成秩序崩坏后，神灵为了限制人类而制造出来的机械“神灵”，编织者把人类控制在既定的命运中，是为了奴役人类，而他要做的就是打破这种奴役，终结命运，还人类以自由，实现一个人人共享自由的时代，他让玩家加入他。
不仅讲的内容够惊爆，还循循善诱，让主角频频点头，觉得好有道理啊——然而我不是能被“我知道你不知道的”这种套路忽悠的，从理论上可以驳斥这种迷惑性的言论。
迷惑言论1：神灵们骗了所有人，他们隐瞒真相，其实是为了自己的私欲，而私欲就是他们要维护自己的统治，他们可不可恶？你生不生气？听我一言——强调欺骗行为，引导因被骗而愤怒的人去认同否定欺骗行为的言论。
驳斥：或许欺骗行为是真的，但是否反对神灵要看他们行为的原因和目的，即便反对神灵也未必要追随你的方案。
迷惑言论2：...将世界从编织者的力量中解放出来，凡人将重获自由，可以自由选择生活——用一个充满诱惑的“自由”做煽动。
那...终究是什么样的自由呢？随心所以就是自由吗？人类社会能有这种自由吗？
启蒙思想家卢梭在《社会契约论》中第六章写道：“我假设人类曾经发展到这样一种状况......如果人类想要继续生存下去，就必须要改变当前的生活状况....别无他法，只能把他们分散在个体的力量联合成一种强大到足以抵抗任何阻力的力量，并且利用一个唯一的动机调动它，从而使它能够协调一致地行动,....找到这样一种形式的联合...在公共意志的最高指导下，我们每个人都将自身以及自己的一切权利转交出来，作为一个整体，我们每个人都成为不可分割的一部分。 ”
在第七章中如此写道：“共同体中成员所必需的责任和义务....暗含约定：任何人如果不遵从集体的意志，集体就应该强迫他服从，这并无他意，只是在强制他保持自由....这一条件...赋予社会契约以合法化。”
这两段合并起来就是一提出了社会契约的存在，二为了维持这种契约必须遵从“约定自由”。
人类社会的自由是约定自由。在一个非原始的社会中，人们必然有的是约定自由，而不是绝对自由，若无约定自由的共识，社会将不复存在。所以游戏中邪神所承诺的“自由”，是不可能存在的，若存在，必将破坏“社会契约”，也就是人类社会的本身。
那么遵守约定自由就不自由了吗？邪神又在混淆概念，约定自由限制的是物质上的绝对自由，而精神上人是可以自由的，人类的历史证明了这儿一点，启蒙主义终结了神权对精神的束缚，狂飙突进运动、浪漫主义打破了理性崇拜的禁锢，之后的象征主义、唯美主义、现代主义、现实主义等又是对浪漫主义的深化或矫正，人的精神是可以自由的。
迷惑言论3：你会获得人类应有的力量，真正的力量，力量助你自由的权力——用无人可以限制来混淆无人愿意限制。
力量并不能让人自由，也不能让人获得权力，仍是卢梭的《社会契约论》第一也不第二章就分析道：由力量获得强者权力并不是真正的权力，而只是一种强力，服从这种强力只是一种明智，而不是义务，若有更强的强力取而代之，这种强力就什么都不是，所以强力构不成权力，对合法的权威义务的服从才构成权力。
迷惑言论4：你要做的并不难，前往摧毁那个城市，然后空手返回，用行动拒绝命运的道路——引诱人走踏上不归路
典型的忽悠完之后诱骗，主角若是做了，就是失去人性、道德和爱情，之后就像阿纳金、阿尔萨斯一样，因为自身行为被原谅的代价如此之大，超过了自身承受，所以只能选择可以承受的堕落之路。
游戏的对立面其实就是精英主义和民粹主义的对决。神灵是精英主义，像牧羊人一样管理着凡人，存在着精英主义的固有问题：代替凡人做出决定，有时接近于控制。但并不是因此就应该倒向民粹主义，精英主义在限制的同时，也提供了保护，而民粹主义则往往是混乱，人们存在着一个欲望的不可控性，和成为整体时的无意识性（《乌合之众》很多人应该看过），这两点结合在一起，就是不可避免的混乱，所以列宁在谈及无产阶级民众时，用的是“自发性”，而无产阶级先锋队才是“自觉性”。
当然，民粹主义也是无法完全否定的，因为个人的权利是不能代表的，精英的代议政策永远无法绕过这一点。精英主义若无限制，必然会让社会利益向自身倾斜，这也是人性不可避免之处，所以民粹主义是一个非常好的制衡，因而在游戏的最后，我并没有杀死而是放走了邪神，让他永远成为众神的警钟。

Must mention I am very dissapointed with the game, as it's not quite fair to call it a game. While the story was interesting and worth the price if you're looking for a good read, it has no replay value as a game. The choices are meaningless as a choice-of game, and instead are more like a puzzle (the correct, winning choice depends on your power). The rest of the choices are just filler with no real impact. I recomend the game as a good story, but going through again and again to get acheivements was mostly a chore, seeing that it's the same thing, to the point I only read the choices in most other playthroughs to get the right acheivement. The ending was the biggest dissapointment. Falls short of having any real impact, would have had a higher score if there was more freedom or variation in the ending if nothing else.
Again, written well for a good story once through, but not a choice-of game, no replay value (especially if acheivement hunting). Do not recommend if your looking for impact on a story or as a game, but if you want a cheap good book grab it if it's cheap enough.
[spoiler] My first character like i usually do in these was honest and from the heart. Returning back to it i start messing around. atfirst i made pretty much a spartan badass that defied the gods at every turn he could and killed everyone and everything but he never found love and in the story was -CONSTANTLY- reminded of this (poor guy) BUT on another character he was a quick and slightly resilient guy with mercy and fibbing on his side along with any god given powers and his faith for such beings. That same character also loved all the characters he could and screwed them all starting with chara,the princess, and the general afterwhich he fled the city to live in the easternlands with his final love. and he may have killed a god too but lets not talk about that.
Its got good writing and that is the whole point of text adventure games, so there you go. Its short, about 2.5-3.5 hours depending on how much thought you put into the choices, but worth it in my opinion.
If you want some more overview of the kinds of options/routes that the story can have (and it seems to me that there are between a dozen and a half dozen ways the story can go) here is what roughly happened in my two playthroughs:

In my first playthrough I was a kind, devout, honest, brave person and I fell in love with a local girl. But the gods decreed that it was not my destiny to be with her. I therefore defied the gods and tried to hold on to love for as long as I could, yet ultimately the gods interfered and convinced her to leave me. Furious, I vowed to destroy the gods and their "destiny". I became a successful champion of a city-state, and with the help of my best friend-turn-general of the army I led my adopted city state past many hardships and adventures. Eventually all seemed successful, and on the eve of my friend and the princess's wedding night a chaos god attempted to destroy fate. I intervened, and in fact I tried to help the chaos god destroy fate, but the gods knew of my blasphemous nature (probably something to do with me telling them to go ♥♥♥♥ themselves whenever they tried to talk to me) and robbed me of my free will, forcing me to destroy the chaos god and protect fate. Afterwards, the gods deposited me back in the city state, where my best friend now hates my guts for my affronts to the gods, but hey I am rich and a hero, I only lost all which was precious to me.
In my second playthrough I was a merciless warrior that was full of devotion to the gods. I scared off that local girl who I had been involved with previously when I executed a prisoner in cold blood right in front of her. I once again became champion of the port city, but this time I had a rather heated affair with the princess. Once again, I traveled on adventures to save the city, and once again the gods recalled me to service, although this time it was on the eve of my wedding night to the princess. The gods did not fit any sort of control on me when they sent me to protect fate since I was so devout, but little did they know that I had secretly talked with the chaos god beforehand and had agreed to destroy fate with him. I "accidentally" lost my fight against him, and fate was destroyed. When I returned home I revealed what I Really thought of the gods and I called my betrothed an ugly hag as I ran off with my best friend (and secret lover!) (who also ended up hating the gods as much as I did). Obviously the gods and the king did not like that, so I was exiled and peniless and probably hated by the general populace as well, but this time I had gained things worthwhile.
So yeah, its fun and I recommend it.
In many ways, this is one of my favorite products produced by Choice of Games in terms of setting and story. Inspired by Greco-Roman mythology, the author creates a unique and excently detailed setting. The supporting cast did not come across as flat and responded better to changes in the main character's personality than in some CoG products I've played. I did two complete play-throughs, opting first for a very sincere and altruistic hero and then a proud and selfish war-loving type.
About 1/3 of the time, the very divergent ways my character acted and reacted brought about somewhat differing content. The story itself was not really affected by my choices and that's a big flaw for a CYOA game. The emergence of a mostly linear story detracts heavily from replayability. But I did not feel rail-roaded into making specific choices as much as felt like different choices created more or less the same story with just a little window dressing changing from time to time.
That said, I truly enjoyed the story that unfolded, only wishing there had been more unique elements to it upon replay. I consider "Champion of the Gods" worth the price that I paid for it ; I got it 25% of full cover as part of a bundle.
One of the better Choice of Games titles, I wasn't instantly hooked by this one. After about thirty minutes, I found myself wanting to do nothing but play more and I spent the entire day going through for the ending I wanted, then doing several others for the fun of it.
Jonathan Valuckas is a very engaging writer who has a fairly passive voice which allows you to project a lot onto your character, as well as the others. Leaving out overwhelming exposition and hyper-detailed character descriptions he instead focuses on the essence of people and information-as-it-comes in a fantasy universe which is both intriguing and accessible.
If he does more, I can't wait for them. Either way, I felt that this was well worth the purchase.
This really is an amazing game I look forward to more of this authors work!
This game is truly amazing. I have had two playthroughs so far, and even though the main story proceeds down a similar path, I was totally unprepared for additonal twists in the plot. It is not very often that a person can claim that their second playthrough was even more engaging than their first. This game has it all: adventure, strategy, fighting, character development, romance, and even deep philosophical dilemmas. Unlike the modern RPG games that I am accustomed to, this game actually took into account how I had been playing; it personalized the dialogue and character interactions based on my character's unique distribuition of attributes. I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a compelling narrative experience.
I really enjoyed this game and being able to pick my characters gender, sexual orientation and being able to decide what happens and the game throwing a lot/some curveballs your way makes the game really enjoyable. And i love greek mythology and fantasy. I really enjoyed this game and absolutly recomend it.
I rate the game Champion of the Gods 3/5. It's OK but generally not as good as Choice of Robots.
This is another text-based choose-your-own adventure style computer game/book/story with multiple endings and no way to turn back to the previous page (just like in Choice of Robots). On one hand being able to turn back to the previous page would be sort of like undoing a mistake you made previously and would be unrealistic. On the other hand, It gets frustrating to have to skim through the whole game over again just to find the page where you might want to make a different choice. Since you can re-play the game anyhow with knowledge of what you previously did (unlike real life), a "back button" would have been a good feature to have had in this kind of game. The absence of this feature does add replayability but more than that, it also adds unnecessary frustration.
This is a fantasy Choose Your Own Adventure style text/story based game apparently set in a world not extremely dissimilar to that old Clash of The Titans movie (or its remake), though honestly this game felt more like the original Clash of the Titans movie to me than the remake. The context of this game felt campy and silly throughout but that did not diminish its charm. The decisions were well implemented and their are several nifty endings. There is some allegorical meanings and messages to be had as well as more direct messages about the effects of being a moral or immoral or anarchistic hero. Mostly however, this story simply espouses that one should be true to themselves and to others regardless of any other considerations.
Unfortunately, though this story has a great number of choices (one on almost every page) the results of those choices are far more limited than in the one other game of this kind I have played (Choice of Robots). Usually when faced with a problem in this game, you do not have the choice to ignore it or avoid it. The game mostly takes note of what kind of person your character is becoming according to how defiantly or loyally you respond but all choices tend to lead to 'yes.' You cannot totally avoid your character's destiny and each play through will see you fighting the same set of enemies and coming upon the same obstacles again and again (also unlike much of Choice of Robots). Perhaps the most freedom you have is in who you try to seduce and whether or not you alienate different side characters. And, unfortunately, while you can choose to be gay, straight or bi there are no detailed sex scenes to be found in this game. For the most part there is no highly detailed ANYTHING to be found in this game.
Indeed, as in Choice of Robots, the entire game feels like an outline of a story rather than an actual short story or book. The descriptions are bare-boned and concise with an amazing lack of visceral detail. I think I've read newspaper articles which seemed to come alive in my imagination more than the scenes in this game. For the most part, if something in this game is supposed to be beautiful then it is simply described as being "beautiful." Though there may be a lot of words in this game, the vocabulary and usage is all extremely basic.
However, the fact that there are multiple endings to this story (and which of those endings you get is dependent on your precise choices throughout) is to be highly commended despite the fact that this structure is the entire point of reading through this game at all. Having a good multiple ending structure dependent on each major choice you make is still better than what most games do for their audiences. In this day and age, the fact that it is perfectly normal for a game to have just one potential ending (if you don't die) is just stupid. Mediocre writing and the general lack of features (and the absence of cool 3D graphics) aside, there are a lot of fairly big-budget, high-end graphics games out there which could learn a lot from Champion of The God's good, and fairly replayable plot structure.
Loved this story. It was interesting and action packed. The only down side was that it was a very short story.

J'enfonce les portes ouvertes, jeu full anglais, mais pas difficile à comprendre ; ne comprenant que du texte, sans musique, sons ou voix.
L'histoire est sympa, J'ai l'impression qu'il y a 4 grandes fin différentes, en ayant fait une c'est ce que je suppose de part les options de dialogues.
Pourquoi est-ce que je dis "suppose" ? Parce que habituellement sur les jeux choice of game j'essaie de fouiller vraiment les choix, de refaire plein de fois le jeu pour explorer un peu toutes les possibilités, sauf que là bah ... disons que je me suis senti un peu floué sur ma deuxième partie. Il arrive un moment au début du jeu où l'on se fait assigner un dieu de prédilection, pour ma première partie c'était un bon gros bourrin donc le dieu en question coulait de source, celui-ci m'a donné un item ... TOTALEMENT INUTILE pendant tout le reste de la partie car à strictement AUCUN MOMENT il n'a été fait mention que je l'utilisais. Je m'étais donc dit bah pas grave mon début de partie je vais le jouer autrement pour avoir un des autres dieux ... et bah non, de nouveau le dieu bourrin et son item inutile ... ok ... Alors je lui ai dit d'aller se faire foutre :) Pensant que peut-être j'aurai là enfin le choix d'en changer ... bah non.
Voilà ce qui a commencé à entraver la progression de ma deuxième partie, j'ai donc continué en me disant que j'irai faire paitre tout les dieux cette fois-ci, en totale opposition avec ma première partie, Et suis donc arrivé à un deuxième moment clef de la partie, j'ai fait d'autre choix, différents, cherchant le concensus mais ... encore une fois le jeu me dit d'aller me faire foutre et je me retrouve sur un copier/coller de ma première partie, et là ça a été la goutte qui à fait déborder le vase, j'ai arrêté ma partie.
Donc il y a peut-être des fins différentes, ou peut-être pas. Tout ce que je vois c'est qu'à deux moments clef du début de l'histoire j'ai été remit sur les mêmes rails entre ma première partie et ma deuxième et que si c'est comme ça tout le long du jeu c'est qu'il n'y a pas de rejouabilité et que c'est du foutage de gueule.
Voilà après comme je disais l'histoire est sympa, bien construite, avec quelques rebondissements. En gros elle vaut le coup d'être jouée.
Je vous recommande donc le jeu, mais à petit prix ;)
After Having put in countless hours in Pendragon Rising and Choice of Kung Fu prior, I can say that this is the best one of these "Choice" series of games I've played yet! The adventure is epic, the decisions really feel like they matter, there are so many ways to succeed and fail and the feelz! Great story, great writing, takes a little bit from homer's odyssey and other greek-like myths butt still feels fresh, well planned and very well thought out. Tin Star will be the next one I purchase and play after this one.

Easily one of the best interactive novels I've played. Had more fun with this one than all the 'Heroes Rise' stories put together. Might also be because I like the overall setting better, who needs super powers when you can stylishly dismount some bandit from his horse? Also I got to kill a giant snake monster thingy by slicing up it's heart, because I'm a badass. Hahahaha! Oh, also may have kinda wrecked a city...whoops...
Pros:

-Story is really good
-Setting is really nice, I could actually pictured a Greek-esque landscape and everything
-You really like you are the character engaging in battle and being diplomatic. Atleast I did personally.
Cons:
-linear is certain places, but that's the nature of these kinda games.
-Attribute system seemed a bit, unbalanced. Hopefully a sequal or spin-off will have an improved version it.

Picked this up thinking it would be like Choice of Robots from the same company. It is not. This is a very amaturish and not very compelling choose your own adventure.
You know what? This was fun. It took me back to childhood and the Choose Your Own Adventure books I read growing up. It's fairly well-written for this genre, and I wouldn't mind reading something set in the same world. Sometimes, you don't want to unwind with Skyrim or Fallout: you want something low maintenance like "Champion of the Gods" that you can use to relax. Granted, this *isn't* going to be for everyone, and I'm sure there are people out there frothing at the mouth now that games like these are available on Steam. If you didn't enjoy Choose Your Own Adventure while growing up, chances are you won't enjoy this. Not certain--? Well, wait until it's on sale. There's nothing lost if you wind up paying a couple of dollars and loathing the game.

-the "stats" page employs the "discovery" mechanic - many of stat bars are only revealed once you encounter them; unlike most Choice games where you can see everything from the beginning (ex: relationship ratings for characters you haven't even met yet)
-story is interesting and engaging with different endings
-high-quality writing - great themes about importance of destiny, divine intervention, and power
-if you like books and reading, very fair price point for the amount of playtime you will get
If you enjoy choose-your-own-adventure (CYOA) games, this is one of the better titles in the Choice franchise.

Even without graphics this game is awesome
If you get it on any kind of sale, you won't regret it. It's not too long of a game, about 14 hours or so, but it's very interesting, and kept me going until the end, taking me only 3 days to finish.

As always, Choice of Games delivers. I love this title. While it's not my favorite of theirs, it was a strong choice to port to Steam and I hope that I see all of their adventures up here soon.

A pretty decent game. Some of the paths were OK and some I don't not care for. So I'm kinda have mixed feelings for this game. One of the game endings could maybe open up for a sequel...
Illusion of choice. All choices lead to the same place. I think it's impossible for you to die. Also is it so hard to note how the characters look? There is very basic details of clothing, but zero descriptions of they looks. Short hair, long hair, blond,brown, black? Big blue eyes or small hazel ones? A crooked nose? Did the author ever hear of that?
honestly thought this'd be something i'd play now and then to stave off boredom... it's really too good for just that, i blitzed through in one sitting and am completely hooked, can't wait for a sequel if they ever make one
Interactive fantasy book, which is great for book lovers. I've played it three times by now, each time I had a different character and recieved different results.
The writing in this CYOA game was disjointed. The transitions were clumsy. I found the characters hard to care about. Late in the game, stat challenges started to be hard to decipher into their associated stats. The narrative proceeded with a strong sense of inevitability such that individual choices didn't matter much, but this last one certainly seems to have been the intent of the author; frustration with the inevitable is a recurring theme of the story.
I enjoyed it, but only because I enjoy the genre. I'll probably play it a few more times, but I can't recommend it to others.
The story is fun, puts you into Greek mythology. My only complaint is that there are times when you feel like the game presents you with nothing more than the illusion of choice. Meaning the game appears to be offering you a genuine choice of several very different options yet whichever you choose the result will be the same with only lipservice paid to the actual choice you made. So...I'm unsure how many real 'change the plot' choices there are or if the plot is basically set in stone and you are just dictating the tone/dialogue/windowdressing.
Truly a great tale woven by great Weavers(Slight spoiler), the tale was great and amazing I can only wish that others will tell the tale from their view.(Hinting that there are mutliple paths)
Don't get me wrong, Champion of the Gods isn't horrible. Its simply not a good game. While enjoyable for the first playthrough it doesn't take long to figure out that you have actually very little choice indeed. This especially shows on multiple playthroughs.
No matter what you do you will be swept towards the three major endings, there's little to no chance for death (unless third ending) and you feel rather constrained by the wondrous leaps involved to keep you on your path.
So, while good to read through once or so, I cannot recommend picking this one up unless it is on a bargain-bin sale price.
I am an avid Choice of Games fan, and this game was nowhere near a disappointment. You can expect the usual impressive quality as well as deep themes and difficult choices.
Also I died without completing my destiny and you better believe I'm going to play it through to the end. It's a shame though, I really liked my character.

Not bad, but personally I found it rather uninspiring for a 5€ game.
Bonne histoire d'épopée grecque bien que celle-ci n'a rien d'extraordinaire à vous offrir.
On peut facilement passé le jeu en 3h et je compte bien le rejouer encore.
Choice of Games remet à jour les livres dont vous êtes le héros de façon briante.

This game is very good for people for a text adventure game, I like the story and the lore of it to.
I love all the Choice Of games. This one is rather more thoughtful and the achievements are harder to complete. I'm enjoying trying to get them all! You can't just click around aim;ess;y, but if you play "in character" and with specific aoms, you discover a lot of story.
Very fun. Worthwhile adventure game.
I liked the options: I'm already contemplating my next playthrough.
If I had a single dislike, it's the either-or approach to the main story's end choice.
But despite that non-spoiler gripe, I really enjoyed it.
I haven't finished the game yet but it has immersive, unusual gameplay. Could be better though I had a great time whilst playing.
This choose your own adventure is fun to play. All the decisions you make affect your character in some way. I'm excited to play more games like it.
The good:

You story change's on what you pick.
While some parts of the games felt forced this is justified by destiny forcing your hand.
You can choice how to react to your destity but you can not win(atleast not until near the ending)
The game made me feel like one of those greek heroes.

I didnt trust or like them.
But aslong our goals align i used them.
In the begining i was respectfull but i became more and more cynical as time moved on.

I would do it all again.
I would pay any price to free my people.
And for my actions i was exiled.
This was a bittersweet ending and it was just one of many

The bad:
The game feels forced at time and you dont have the option to punch the gods in there face's even when there asking for it.
I personally think its not worth five dollars
In the beggining of the game you have high hopes for the it, and everything seems to go well tillyou get to the middle of the game. it starts feeling boring the plot dosent sink in and the story progresses too fast it feels like you accomlished nothing. The rest of the game feels to easy the enemy is easily defeated and feels like youve bearly fought with him.
In short everything you do moves by fast and it feels like nothing was accomplished.
I had high hopes for this game, but it dosent live up to them.

Let me begin by stating that by now “Choice of games” have established a certain minimal level of quality one expects to find in their products. Hence I will not waste my time complimenting the brilliance of writing and intricacy of the game’s world – these elements are default for them, which are a great responsibility and a sign of player’s trust at the same time. Let us instead consider this particular gem.
Upon reading about the game being inspired by Greek myths I dreaded the prospect of dealing with another mash of centaurs and gorgons for the tenth time. Boy was I mistaken. There is none of typical tropes of ancient Greece in this story. There is no Zeus or Hades; in fact you probably will not meet any of the familiar names. So what is the deal with Greek inspiration then? The developers done somethings I didn’t dare to dream of. They have captured to vibe of ancient Greek tragedy in their narrative. The feeling of a struggle against forces beyond your control or comprehension permeates the story. The questions of fate and free will aren’t mere peculiarity any more – they are vital. And no matter what you do the gods will screw you at their first whim in ways you can’t even guess. You are just a pawn in a giant game of cosmic chess.

This is a very exciting game. “Choice of robots” probably still holds the gold, but “Champion of the Gods” takes a definitive silver amongst the developer’s works.
Que jogo, meus amigos... Você se sente lendo um bom livro, porém modificando as páginas que desejar. A sensação de ver algo extremamente importante acontecendo devido uma pequena escolha que você fez lá atrás é fantástica.
Ainda não terminei o jogo então não sei se existem vários tipos de finais, mas de fato personagens importantes podem morrer de acordo com suas escolhas.

As typical from Choice of Games, a well written story with multiple paths to be either "hero" or "villian". I especially enjoyed the Ancient Mythological setting, and the fast pace in which you could change paths, while still having previous decisions providing heavy influence.
It was amazing. A bit of background music would be nice tho.
I killed a boar, got married, and watched my dad kill my wife in 3 minutes of gameplay.
