After playing They Are Billions, I was hungry for more horde defence games with solid base building. Cataclismo has absolutely sated this hunger, which it owes mainly to its intricate building system. Rather than putting down whole buildings and wall segments like in TAB, you can place individual blocks that make up your defensive structures, like walls, towers and battlements. With these defences, you have to hold off multiple waves of incoming horrors, aided by various infantry types.

This simple mechanic creates immense emergent complexity, where the way you connect the blocks, where you place them, how you account for troop ingress and how you lay out the various traps and buffs are all deciding factors for the efficacy of your defences. It all makes for a very fascinating challenge to lay out an optimal defensive line. Losing a mission was never frustrating in Cataclismo, because it feels like you just learned a lesson in what doesn't work, and you get to take that knowledge with you to the next attempt.

Very enjoyable game, clearly well-crafted and very polished - highly recommended if you enjoy defence games.

A good, flawed game. A lot of strange design choices. Polished though, with a sleek art direction. If you've played They Are Billons or Age of Darkness adjacent games, and you liked it, then you might like this as well. But it really doesn't add much to the genre.

Wanted to like this game but;

The camera controls are absolutely horrible, not having full and free control over the rotational pan (instead you rotate the camera in like 30 degree increments) is insane.

The voxel style is cool but makes it hard to tell what's what and what's going on.

I really want to like this game but I find the creation and organising of economy and defensive structures to be fiddly, tedious and unsatisfying. The pleasure in these games comes from devising clever solutions, but there is too much friction in the process here for it to be enjoyable. Also, yes, the stairs for oxygen collectors feels like a wind-up.

Amazing game. Atmosphere and story is great. The art is beautiful.

The gameplay scratches a very specific itch for me. It's strategic but not punishing and allows the player to have fun and not hyper optimize (on medium difficulty settings anyway).

The building mechanics are great and they encourage building nice looking structures.

陰鬱。マップもストーリーも超暗いっす。そんでカタルシスほぼ無し。
ストーリーはスピリチュアル系っすね。アニメで例えるならビーストウォーでもズリターンズな感じ（本国言語のほう）。見た目はカジュアルだけども結構人を選ぶと思います。

全体的に思ったよりボリュームが無いというか、中盤以降は作業ゲーになるんで、何かあればいいなと思いましたね。
あと自由に建てられるかって言うとストーリー上、結構制限があるんで、そこは注意かな？
すっげぇ山奥で暗いマップで目を凝らしながら、見えねぇってのは怖ぇなって感じてしまう人はやめた方が良い。ジッサイ見づらい。PV見て雰囲気を気に入れば買ってみても良いかもしれぬ。
同価格帯の似たようなゲームの中からだと、個人的には中位ぐらいの評価になるかな。
雨と霧が好きなイギリス人にはオススメ。

突然強制負けイベントあって萎えた。どうなっちゃんてんすか！こんなんいいのかよ？！
資源とかユニットそのままで時間遡行させてくれよな～頼むよ～。
難易度調整は敵が弱くなるんじゃなくて融通が利くほうが好みっすね。即自動アップグレードとか。
アビリティは付け替えできた方が良いかな。

I have only played the campaign as such i can not say anything about the skirmish mode.

I have very much enjoyed the campaign and the artstyle is beatiful. With 15hours playtime for the campaign on medium difficulty it is also not to short.

As someone who rarely skips story, I started skipping the cutscenes regularly. There's the core of a fun game here but it's SO SLOW and dull. Eventually I got so bored watching levels drag out that I refunded.

The devs tried really hard to mark a stylised interesting world. It's stylised. It's not interesting. And you spend a lot of the game watching them endless waffle on about a very generic setting.

Very good game, the campaign is fun and there's great replay value. I love the ability to create your own defenses, especially since it has a real impact on gameplay. I'd really like to see a co-op mode or maybe even a new faction, turning this TD into a competitive RTS. In any case, I already love this game as it is. I hope the developers continue to work on this project. If you like the surprising mix of Warcraft 3, Satisfactory, and a TD, you'll definitely be a fan of this game.

Im only a few hours deep but this game is complex, fun, and super modular so far. every time I learn something, it makes me want to rebuild my entire concept of a good defense. This game is made to make you nervous, sweaty and lose track of time. If you're TIRED of games having the same style of RTS, play this game. It is a massive learning curve but breath of fresh air. Reminds me of a Stronghold/Age of Darkness build. I give this game a 9/10 so far. DONT EXPECT TO BUMRUSH ENEMY WITH ATTACKS OR SPAM SAME UNIT TYPE. I learned that already lol

Devs please let me fix your game for you in two incredibly easy steps.

1. Make oxygen not require stairs
2. Make roofs braindead easy

It really hurts to downvote this game but Im hoping it makes the devs see this review. This game has a ton of promise, music, story, vibes, gameplay is all on point here. Except for the aforementioned issues.

Building stairs for the oxygen tanks looks terrible, and feels like Im being punished with chores for a basic need within the game. Expanding? Dopamine! Battle? Dopamine! Building a cool tower DOPAMINE! But building those stairs is nothing but a chore. There is NO REASON they need stairs either. There is already magic in this world, just say "magic happens" and we now have the oxygen from the tank.

Then we get to the roofs and I just shut the game off. There is already a ton of clutter with banners, buffs, merlons ect. on height. Now you are not only increasing the clutter but setting up another SUPER TEDIOUS task no one asked for. The fix is EASY, just make it so you select a roof on an area and it makes an uninteractable space above that doesnt impede on banners ect. You can simply designate an area for roofing and then block the ability to build on top of it anymore.

This is not Valheim, and every time you build o2 stairs or trying to build a dumb roof for your build you are actively doing something no one has any interest in doing.

PLEASE FIX THIS BECAUSE THE GAME IS SO GOOD WITH THESE CHANGES.

Игра очень неплоха, но глупые решения разработчиков, нулевая оптимизация (тупо тормозит на новом железе). Невозможно сделать светлее, у меня плохое зрение, я просто ничего не вижу, все сливается, при этом возможность сделать ярче гамму дебилойды которые это создали закрыли, якобы ради лучшего погружения в игру..
Бывают игры просто говнище, и там как бы все ясно, а тут реально хорошая игра, которую убили кривые руки которые не допилили самую мелочь. То что игра становится ♥♥♥♥ пошаговой даже на минимальных настройках уже в середине я вообще молчу, это просто днище адовое, для такой примитивной в плане графики по всем параметрам игры.
Короче не покупайте, разочаруетесь..

Brilliant little RTS with a gorgeous art style and a surprisingly engaging campaign story.

You don't get a lot of time between waves (the harder levels require you to move nearly as fast as a competitive RTS when it comes to resource gathering and unit production) but you can build and queue up orders while paused, which is a lifesaver. Building is intuitive and very satisfying, especially after you unlock all the pieces and construct your big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fortress and watch your little guys rain hell on the hapless horrors.

Absolutely worth the 30ish hours it takes to beat the campaign, and if you still want more there's survival and skirmish modes as well.

Good game, with outstanding art and great atmosphere. But the building aspect I found to be too cumbersome. I appreciate the effort to offer a highly customizable experience, but I do think having premade buildings would have -for me at least- made for a more enjoyable experience. It took so much time to build and refine buildings, that at some point launching a single mission felt like I had to check my calendar to make sure I have enough time to play.
I still think it's a good game to unwind in easier difficulties if you like rts like games with a focus on the narrative.

Esse jogo é simples...

Simplesmente [b]INCRÍVEL[/b], uma das melhoras compras que eu já fiz na Steam.

Um dos melhores RTS que já joguei, mas sendo sincero, oque me prendeu no jogo foi como a construção das muralhas e cidades é divertido e intuitivo, mas também me permite fazer coisas que parecem imponentes e robustas ou frágeis e completamente malucas, a criatividade é o limite.

Sem medo eu digo a você, pode comprar, nem precisa esperar promoção.

At first, you can not just stand at your Citadel – you need to explore the surrounding area and start gathering resources as fast as possible. You will collect wood from sawmills, stone and minerals from quarries, and oxygen by building air filters up high so they can work efficiently. Wood is essential early on for building basic structures and creating more workers. Stone is crucial for stronger defenses. Minerals are needed for advanced buildings and upgrades. Oxygen is required for buildings, units, and workers.

Balancing these resources and placing your gathering buildings intelligently makes all the difference between barely surviving the night and holding your ground against swarms of horrors. At the beginning, it can feel hard, but once you learn all the mechanics and understand them correctly, you will be able to complete all levels even on extreme difficulty.

[h2]The Night is Nearly Here[/h2]
A campaign is not only about base building, but also includes expeditions where you have limited units, or you control only Lady Iris. It is a nice addition and perfect for storytelling, which I think is decent. The entire atmosphere of the game is well-crafted, thanks to its original visual style, engaging soundtrack, and interesting lore.

After a story mission, you can try to prove your skills in skirmishes where you must survive four nights, or you can try to survive as long as possible in survival mode. Also, there is a sandbox where you can do whatever you want, or you can create your own level and publish it in a workshop that is useful for blueprints – premade structures too.

[h2]The Horrors are Coming[/h2]
I did not encounter any bugs during my playthrough. It is rare nowadays, but the optimization could be slightly better in survival mode. One thing that would need some correction is the prosperity levels that are used to unlock better buildings and units. There is no reason to upgrade beyond level two or three, as it requires a lot of resources that could be spent on upgrades for the three basic units: Bowmen, Lobbers, and Captors, or to produce more units and reach the army limit.

Yes, higher prosperity means you can have more units. But playing on extreme difficulty, there was no time to collect enough resources. So my tactic was to stick with the basic units and combine them with boost buildings, such as fire arrows and damage boost flags. This works well on lower difficulties as well. Thanks to this, I was not able to use other units (if I do not count given units by script during missions): Cannoners, Ballistas, Hunters, and Partisans in city-building missions, even in my first playthrough on medium difficulty.

[h2]Is it over? Yes, it is![/h2]
I enjoyed the rest of the gameplay, especially building various walls and platforms to make them stable and strong. The wall physics are good, and you have to think about what will happen if one block is destroyed: will the rest of the wall stay up, or will it fall down too? For thinking, you can pause the game any time and if your plan fails, rewind time anchor (load save) is your saviour.

This is one of the best RTS games I have ever played. Its fun, it has depth, its stylish and it has a variety of ways to play. The gameplay is mostly a mix of building walls and structures brick by brick and more traditional base building where you have specific buildings for certain purposes like training units. The modular building is so much fun and really lets you create what you want, and it can get pretty fast once you have a bit of practice. Plus there are lots of elements that give it that intricacy that I love in an rts without locking you into any one playstyle. The intricacy elevates, its not a burden like it can be in other games.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a fantastic rts. The different modes are great and offer different experiences and I really hope they make a sequel!

Edit: Having completed the campaign just now, I can say this is an absolutely amazing game and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves rts games, as even though its does not fit the traditional formula exactly, it has all the things I love about rts in this game. Give it a shot!

A excellent RTS-lite where building walls is more important than your economy, but only just. The story is decent enough, and the art is fantastic. The entire game oozes with flavor that is hard to describe. Building stuff is also quite fun. Learning what works and what doesn't, what to buy first and what to avoid, etc.

I recommend this game for anyone who likes tower defense games or RTSes.

Cataclismo offers a fairly unique take on the standard RTS formula, combining your typical base building gameplay with the ability to design custom architecture. It follows a similar level progression to classic RTS games such as Warcraft where the player needs to construct specific buildings in order to unlock various improvements around your settlement.

However, the game also encourages the player to take their time in designing their settlement by allowing them to pause the in-game-time while still issuing orders. Despite this convenience, the player is still pressured by the ever looming threat of nightfall and the many horrors it brings.

[h2]The Campaign[/h2]
Cataclismo offers three primary game modes to the player. These are the campaign, skirmish, and survival. Of these, the campaign is where the entirety of the game’s story content takes place, and where I spent the majority of my playtime. I don't have much to say on the other two game-modes, as they are mostly similar to the Settlement Building.

The meat and potatoes of the campaign is the variety of mission types and story gimmicks it offers. There are three mission types spread throughout the campaign, each with its own unique side-objectives.

[h3]Settlement Building[/h3]
The first of these is your classic settlement builder where the player is tasked with constructing a settlement to survive a set number of days. Each day is separated into three sections: daytime, dusk, and night.

The daytime is where a majority of time is spent, where the player is tasked with building up their economy and defenses while also scouring the map for specific side-objectives. Dusk is a brief period that is mostly the same as daytime. It primarily serves as a warning for the player to finalize their defenses, and prepare for the swarm of horrors that will inevitably arrive at night.

[h3]Expedition[/h3]
The second campaign mission type is expedition, which is a more story heavy experience. These missions have the player take control of a small band of units while exploring a mostly linear map, typically wandering into small groups of enemies while searching for the next story beat. Most of these missions are fairly easy and mechanically uninteresting with a single exception. Fortunately, these mission types don't overstay their welcome.

[h3]Defense[/h3]
The third and final campaign mission type is akin to a tower defense game, where the player is given a set amount of units and building materials. These missions give the player unlimited time to prepare their finite defenses, before manually triggering an attack wave. Defense missions are not very difficult, but they are entirely optional and can serve as entertaining breaks from the main story.

[h2]Bugs[/h2]
In the nearly 50 hours that I’ve played Cataclismo, I encountered very few bugs, and those that I did were only minor inconveniences. The main issue that I encountered was a pathing bug that occurred when units were trying to navigate around tall, windy structures. In addition, the large units struggled to reposition when only moving a single space. Otherwise, this is a very stable game.

[h2]Closing Thoughts[/h2]
Cataclismo is a fun and unique experience for anyone who enjoys a slow paced, methodical form of gameplay. The game actively encourages players to take it slow and rewind from your mistakes. You absolutely can speed-run the game if you know what you are doing, but you are not expected to constantly micromanage a large army in real time. If you want a fast paced, high intensity game, then I recommend you look elsewhere.

All in all, I fully enjoyed playing Cataclismo. The game’s description tells you everything you need to know about it. So if you are interested in what Catalcismo has to offer, you should absolutely give it a try.

I'm glad that I gave this game a shot. I've been bouncing off of a lot of city builder and horde defense games lately. This is a well balanced blend of both that keeps you doing different things that are all fun. i like the art style and the story was good enough. The best part of the game for me was the tile building system. I loved building the walls for the castles. I bought it on sale but i think it is worth the full asking price. I would buy a sequel if they developed one.

Story and strategy games can go both ways. They can add immense depth and connective tissue, or they can become annoying and confusing filler. [i]Cataclismo[/i] unfortunately falls into the second category… at least for me.

This could be saved by interesting and fun gameplay, but... it's not. Building something that looks decent takes too long, and then you just watch it crumble so you can rebuild it again.

Maybe it would become fun if I stuck with it a bit longer, but life is short and games are many.

Looks beautiful though!

Je pensais me retrouver face à un jeu avec un mix entre RTS et Tower Defense, finalement je me retrouve avec un jeu où je dois courir après des ressources pour par perdre à cause du scaling des ennemies. Le côté RTS et tower defense sont finalement totalement éclipsés.

Such an odd game.

On the one hand, a nice premise around building your base, which can be destroyed brick by brick, and the usual TD-style defence. On the other, it has you trapsing around maps Diablo style, building bridges and performing basic actions.

Overall it just doesn't stick the landing. It's too fiddly, the real-time aspects cause more aggravation than they should, enemy variety isn't good either. If they'd just focused on the TD part of the design and fleshed that way out, around the build-your-base approach, it could have been much better.
