Capsized hooked me immediately with its gorgeous hand-drawn alien environments and spine-tingling electronic soundtrack — it genuinely feels like being stranded on a dangerous, living world. The grappling hook and gravity ram give the movement a satisfying physicality, and the weapon variety kept early levels feeling fresh and inventive. That said, I won't pretend the controls don't take some getting used to; the floaty physics engine that makes the world feel alive is the same one that occasionally sends you careening into a wall of enemies you couldn't see coming. The back half of the game drags a bit as the level design leans harder on repetition, and a couple of late missions tested my patience more than my skill. Still, for the price — especially in a bundle — the atmosphere alone is worth the trip, and I walked away genuinely impressed by what this small team pulled off.

A platformer with individual stages and limited lives.

Keyboard recommended! W is to jump while spacebar is to use your limited jetpack. You gotta get used to the jankiness. You free aim with your mouse.
Using your hook can pull you towards the wall. You can also use it to grab rocks and throw it at your enemy. You're gonna need it to destroy a certain object.
Difficulty ramps up as you fight different enemies and the levels become longer, thus, limited lives are precious.

+ Music is pretty cool.

+- Jankiness. You'll know if you play the game.

- It's tough to tell what's an enemy and what's a harmless creature.
- Game is short if you play on medium difficulty. 12 levels total.
- I encountered a bug in Level 11 where one of the parts got stuck within a secret zone. I had to start over.

Score: 7 out of 10. Decent game, but it's short. Buy it on sale or in a game bundle.

Nossa, esse jogo é um dos que mais tinha poeira na minha biblioteca, provavelmente de um dos primeiros Humble Bundle. E foi uma bela surpresa!

Uma das melhores trilhas sonoras de um jogo indie! Simplesmente sensacional! E baita arte linda!

Gameplay estilo plataforma, envolvendo algumas armas e meio que uma "gravity gun". O jogo possui uma bela dificuldade. Alguns reclamaram da gameplay e física de objetos, e fui entender isso melhor no boss final. Outro ponto chato é aquele lance de inimigos longe da sua tela te verem e atirarem.

De resto, com uma boa promoção, vale muito a pena.
Para quem curte platinar, boa sorte, uma das conquistas é passar o jogo sem morrer.

If you bought this game in 2011 and never played it, or somehow got on its store page and are wondering if it's any good, you should definitely give it a go.

It has a really nice movement system, which pairs really nicely with the different enemies, guns and terrain you'll encounter. You have the options of force blasting yourself into the air, wall climbing, jetpacking and, most importantly, the grapple hook. You can grapple hook yourself to floating rocks, and swing in circles around flying enemies while blasting them down. You can hook boulders and use them as shields against spear throwing enemies, and throw it in their face when you get close. You can force blast the ground while jumping, then grapple hook onto a mountain, and let go at the last moment, to fly across the whole level like a rocket.

You use all these different mobility options and combine them with the different guns you find scattered around the map, and try to overcome each enemy/terrain combo.

The game starts off easy, but it gets progressively harder with each level, and culminates in a really satisfying, 1hr+ learning curve boss fight (which ties up the small story arc nicely).

The game also has a really nice art style and atmosphere. The artist is credited as "Jesse McGibney", and they did a great job.

I bought this game 2011 and never got beyond the second or third level. I see that the developers AlienTrap Games went on to make more games, which i bet are also worth trying.

This game lost nothing of its charm and fun in the 13 years that passed since it came out, and you should definitely try it out.

short and relatively easy platformer/shmup in a strange but beautiful alien world, accompanied by fantastic (licensed) music and a disappointing ending. not that anybody would be playing this for the story.

I say relatively easy but I had to take an extended break at some point, got stuck on a level, went back later and could continue. there's some sort of rating system, I ignored that, so going for gold might require more effort. then again, if you're better-versed in the genre (I pretty much never play this sort of thing), it might be a cakewalk. there's a demo to try if you're uncertain.

too bad the dev went in a lazy roguelite direction with cryptark, then decided to waste the player's time in wytchwood (mandatory inventory drop on death is always a colossal mistake), so they're one of the many indie one-hit wonders as far as I'm concerned.

未開惑星に不時着、仲間を探したり離脱したりするために探索せよ！というゲーム(多分)
文章殆ど出てこないので所々表示される一枚絵で推察するしかないので多分そういう事だろう。
つまりストーリー自体はちょっとグロめでバイオレンスなピクミン。ピクミン(敵対生物)だけど。

内容的には探索要素ありパズル要素若干ありの2Dアクションゲー。
操作性自体は悪くはないが、全体的にフワフワした独特な操作感から割と人を選ぶと思う。
頻繁に回復が出たり復活アイテムが落ちているため難易度自体は割と低め。
ただ、アクション性もパズル性もどちらも中途半端に高いためどっちの気分でやるか迷うというか、いまいち気分が乗れないゲーム
あと探索要素がよくある偽装壁(壁に見えるだけで通過可能なアレ)ばっかりで、
しかも目的地自体は見えているため地面に空間が見えた瞬間壁に体を擦り付ける作業が始まる。
これがやたら多いため探索要素が多い割に単調で飽きが来るのが早い。
このゲームで一番楽しい所は多分グラビティガン(のようなもの)で剛体を投げて敵を倒したりできる事(だと思う)が
これもなんだか当ててもダメージ出てんのかどうかよくわからん(緑の血飛沫？は出るが少し地味)ので全体的に爽快感に欠ける。

全体的に「そこそこ面白いんだけどなんか色々惜しいゲーム」という所。
定価で買って後悔しないかと言うと微妙な感じ。

Capsized provides a fun alien world to plow through, but the tools provided to the player could feel a lot better.

Biggest positives:
+ Diverse environment filled with an interesting mix of tribal aesthetics, alien fauna, and ancient technology
+ Variation in objectives between levels adds some interest to the combat

Other notes:
-- Many awkward interactions with the environment; the character is constantly getting caught or stuck on things.

Замечательный представитель безпрыжковых платформеров первой инди волны. В этот раз через раскачивания на крюке-кошке в духе [b]Worms[/b], но облегчённые низкой гравитацией. Ей же решаем не обременяющие физические задачки. Всего 12 уровней, но многослойностью напоминают [b]Turrican[/b]. Яркое приключение в интересном мире с космической музыкой в непобедимом 2D. Отстрел фауны прилагается.

It's an okay platformer if you can get it very cheap (~1€). I don't have hours logged because I played offline, but I did get bored with it after one evening and I never run it again. That said, if you're a fan of platformers, it might be alright for you, but buy only on deep discount.

Man i love this little indie game, it is by far my favorite title from this dev team. I grew up playing flash games similar to this full title and it just hits all the right beats for me. The many tools for traversing the alien environments and all the weapons feel great for a pop sci fi otherworldly feel. The game may not be revolutionary but its dang fun so i'm recommending it wholeheartedly.

Capsized is a game that looks great, but that same aesthetic is also what hinders it's visibility - preventing you from being able to easily see some enemies and objects. The game has a lot of freedom of choice when it comes to movement, but the movement itself is ultimately floaty and makes some of it's own options redundant (why is there wall jumping? This adds nothing, and serves no purpose). It's a game with a small number of achievements, but about 20% of them are mostly broken. It's a game where difficulty options seem to be Trivial, Less Trivial and Screw You, and the only differences is the damage the enemies take and the damage you deal to them being lower. There's a lot of weapons, but every weapon pickup auto switches you to it, which can lead to a lot of waste. Capsized has a lot of interesting ideas, ultimately hindered with a frustrating execution and muddied visuals. I cannot recommend it.

This is a game that is less than the sum of its parts.
It tries to add a whole bunch of mechanics and set you loose on the level to do things however you want, but the mechanics don't really combine in particularly interesting ways.
For instance, most objects in the game are physics-based, meaning you can pick up and move objects around. Seems like an interesting concept, right? Unfortunately, the way this is mostly used in game is to clog up tunnels with things that you have to clear out before you can pass through. This is often a frustrating experience, as things can get really jambed in corners.
There are a whole bunch of weapons, but I only ever really wanted to use a couple of them, because the others were simply too weak or frustrating to use.
The game's platforming is a (slightly under-utilised) high point, and using the gravity hook to move around or avoid enemy fire felt pretty good. I especially liked when the game changed things up with low- or zero-gravity. I think the game would've done well to find interesting ways to change up the other levels, as that would've kept me more engaged. As it stands, the levels felt pretty repetitive, with combat encounters all kinda blurring together in my mind. Levels that had the objective of "beat the same boss 4 times" or "collect the 20 gubbins from around the level" were particularly tedious.
Visually, the game looks really good. If I had to criticise it at all, I'd say the large clumps of messy alien terrain that make up most of the solid ground in the get a little tired and homogeneous after a while.
All that being said, a lot of work clearly went into this game, with lots of good ideas being thrown around, but these good ideas don't always cohere to each other all that well, which is what I mean when I say the game is less than the sum of its parts. I think there's a lot in this game for Alien Trap to be proud of, but a lot of room for improvement. I'd like to try some of Their newer games to see how they've progressed.

If you want to play a game that epitomises some 2011 indie buzzwords ("totally physics-based!", "non-linear levels!") and enjoy running around and shooting things, then this game is exactly what you're looking for. Just know that this game also epitomises the pitfalls of these things.
If you enjoy aspects of this game and want to try something similar, then I have a few recommendations:

I was surprised by how smooth it felt to play, and how much depth there was to how you interacted with the game world.

The difference is that noita fully embraces emergent gameplay. Destructible environments, customisable spells, heaps of interacting spell parts, materials, liquids, enemies, etc. It's a chaotic and complex roguelike, so it's much harder to get into than Capsized, but if all this sounds good to you, it might be exactly what you're looking for.

Capsized is a pretty okay if a tad frustrating sci-fi Action game, okay time for the story. In deep space a ship is traveling the cosmos until a mysterious green energy beam blasts the ship making its crew evacuate, most of the crew has landed on a mysterious planet, one of these men is determined to find his comrades and escape this hostile alien world.

So the likes, the gameplay is pretty okay, nice and simple, I'll be it a little bit frustrating at times, it also has some interesting ideas. One of those interesting ideas is the energy grapple hook and pulse blaster, basically the energy grapple hook can allow you to climb higher or carry objects to use in a variety of ways, sometimes to clear them away or use them as a makeshift weapon or a shield.

The pulse blaster can allow you to blast objects or enemies away from you; it becomes pretty handy when you're trying to use a boulder as a weapon. Your suit also has a jetpack which was pretty fun to use but most levels you have to conserve energy to use it, but when you're allowed free unlimited fuel it can be quite fun.

The weapons were very good nice and destructive, I also really like that each weapon has a standard and alternative mode, basically you have your standard pistol rounds but then you have an alternative where you can charge it up and fire, you also have a rocket launcher that can become a grenade launcher, a machine gun that can become a shotgun with these alternative modes. I found that to be quite an interesting concept/idea.

The graphics is very good, with a very good use of color and nice little touches that makes you want to stop and stare sometimes and just take in the atmosphere. The levels are very good with some little diversity and plenty of nice touches and scenery that really captures the vibe of an alien planet with its flora, fauna and strange architecture.

The enemies are very good each one with its own unique design and each one has its own unique attack like attacking with blow darts or they have their own way of traversing the area like their own version of a jetpack, it all does a really good job of selling the whole alien vibe.

The story was good pretty simple told through little pictures you get with the start and the ending of a level, nothing to complex which I like. The music is very good definitely fits the game very well. The atmosphere is really good it captures this whole being stuck on this strange alien world with its own rules while trying to survive, kind of have a Metroid feel to it.

So the dislikes, there can be a bit of a difficulty spike sometimes like with certain enemies that can be very overpowered, three enemies being a teleporter, a psychic and a super psychic monster that can be quite frustrating, especially if you're doing a no death run.

Then sometimes it's hard to control your character which is a bit rare and then there are the obstacles that can be hard to get past, like you're pulling a crate or something from a gap you have to go through, only for it to get snagged and you have to push it back or you're trying to set a boulder or something on a pressure plate and just not getting it there, that happened a lot.

And finally there are traps that can be such a pain to get through, you see there are two types of traps in the game, dart traps and gas traps, the dart traps aren't really that bad, but the gas traps are the worst as if you're not careful they can kill you pretty quickly even at full health.

You have to time it very carefully probably the worst example of the gas trap being a pain in the ass was the first time they were introduced, they're not so bad if you're not doing a no death run but still a pain in the ass.

Okay now that I've told you all this Capsized is a pretty okay if a tad frustrating sci-fi Action game, it has pretty okay gameplay, very good weapons and very good atmosphere. So do I recommend this game, a little bit I will say that you're going to have to have a good patience with it and practice a little bit if you want to unlock some of those achievements, like the No Death achievement.

So we've got a little action platformer here with some physics elements thrown in. Not a whole lot to say so I'll just get right to it:

[*]As with many physics games, everything that can move gets very jiggly when any force is applied to it or something touching it.
[*]Controls could use some tuning and movement could do with some tightening up. The jump button is set to W and feels very floaty, and the jetpack is set to Spacebar and doesn't really have too much thrust. I'm not sure why they're not the same button and just have the jetpack activate when already airborne. That would be too intuitive I guess. You can also wall jump and have a grappling hook, so there's a lot of overlap in movement abilities that doesn't make sense.
[*]Every enemy is quite durable, regardless of the weapon being used. They're also hard to spot due to the art style.
[*]Exploration is not rewarded aside from collecting the levels 'secrets', and powerups don't carry over to the next level.
[*]Levels consist of narrow cave paths, at least at first. I didn't make it past the first few levels before deciding this game was no longer worth my time.

This game is one of the worst examples of a 2D platformer I've played in recent memory. There are a lot of really great concepts here, executed with all the precision of dropping a pillowcase full of hammers down an elevator shaft.

Movement: Movement is definitely the worst part of the game, but not by much. Jumping is imprecise and floaty. I swear that gravity changes from mission to mission and there is no way to execute either a jump or grapple maneuver with any degree of confidence. The best I managed to suss out was that the further you are from the surface you are attaching the grapple hook to, the faster you will go towards it. A lot of the time it seemed like I was also descending at wildly variable speeds. I think that had more to do with getting hit by enemies. Sometimes you'll blast off into the atmosphere after stepping on something in the environment, only to rocket back to the ground and hit the same thing again, resulting in an iterative loop of going up and down way too fast while also getting pounded by enemies from all sides.

Graphics: I thought it was a charming game at first but that quickly dissipated once I realized how difficult it was to differentiate a LOT of foreground, background, and interactive assets from one another. Often I would try to shelter down in a little alcove with an overhanging rock that provided me cover only to still get shot because the overhanging rock was actually just part of the background and did not have collision. This becomes more of a nuisance when you keep stepping onto enemies or hitting spring traps and whatever else that you cannot see because of how everything blends together. The thing that kept catapulting me into the air? It happened a few dozen times and I still don't know what it looked like because it was in a mess of plants that cover every surface of the game.

Combat: Looks decent, feels bad. I don't want to harp on enemy difficulty, but WOW these enemies are hard for all the wrong reasons. Some of them are bullet sponges, some of them make more enemies, most of them are tiny and swarming and hard to hit. When you're a little screaming pinball getting blasted around the map in constantly shifting speeds and directions, it is VERY hard to hit tiny little enemies that take a tic of health every time they touch you. Add onto that the fact that your array of weapons can deal damage to you, so whoops you ran out of flamethrower and now you're auto-switching to plasma mortars in a narrow corridor there goes all of the rest of your health bar to friendly fire. Some enemies require you to deal with them in specific ways, which again, is REALLY hard when you're all over the map trying to get away from the murder mosquito mating swarm that is constantly chasing you. One enemy in particular has a gravity force field around him that pulls in all of your bullets and bits of terrain debris (including you) and then blasts them out at you while being invulnerable. He is also a bullet sponge compared to most other enemies and you have to wait until he isn't doing his *signature move* to hit him. To add to that fun, he is also constantly shooting super fast homing torpedoes at you the whole time. "But homing bullets are a regular thing in games" you say, like an IDIOT. They sure are, pal. Most of the time, what do you do? run away, make a sharp turn, get behind cover? This DOES NOT WORK. These homing bullets hit walls and *slide around them* to hit you. Hitting other objects does nothing. Your body is what stops these bullets every time. Take that broken design philosophy and apply it to all other enemies in this game.

1/5 stars; 3 thumbs down. Quit and uninstalled on mission 11 out of who knows how many because the only "let's play" I saw on youtube ended at mission 7 after 30 minutes and I think it's probably because the guy rage-quit.

Love a good platform

- Great overall game design
- Fun easy game to jump back into for a quick time kill

- Funky alien enemies. Quite difficult!

- Physics is fun and enjoyably infuriating at times

I agree that the music is a little repetitive after a while but meh..

Tengo el juego desde 2013 pero me dio el puntazo de jugarlo ahora de rebote por Cryptark de los mismos desarrolladores, siempre jugué un par de minutos, vi que molaba pero nunca lo acabe. Esta vez le di el intento largo y me gusto, hecho de menos como en Cryptark presionar Shift y poder hacer zoom alejando mas aun la cámara del personaje en plano 2D ya que es complicado matar a enemigos lejanos.

En cualquier caso recomiendo el juego, es corto y divertido, Howlongtobeat lo lista en 4h y 6h con extras pero a mi la campaña me duro 6, soy de los que exploran y se entretienen con cualquier tonteria jaja

поначалу казалось, норм платформер. Ну специфическая физика, графика утомительная для глаз, неудачные решения типа когда подбираешь оружие, оно сразу ставится активным, при этом некоторое оружие выстрелом в упор убивает персонажа. Но чиллово. Но на последних уровнях разраб решил подгадить сложностью, напихать миллион мобов, сделать сами уровни огромными, и вот тут все недочеты геймплея вылезли на первый план и играть в это стало невозможно. 6/10

Capsized is what I would describe as a debut attempt at making a solid video game. A lot of the ingredients for a very satisfying action platformer/shooter are there, but various bad choices, such as:

It's a bit spotty at times on a technical level (like when a mission-required physics object ended up in a large boulder, forcing a restart) but being able to grapple around, fling oneself around with either said grapple or with an anti-grav kick, as well as having a jetpack and the occasional anti-grav free-fly powerup or level makes this game good fun to get around in. That there's no fall-damage makes movement way more fun than if you miscalculated a jump (or worse, got grabbed by a large insect and dragged into the sky) and have to make peace with becoming a splatter-mark on a solid surface.

None of the weapons felt useless; the enemies could be a little difficult to spot in terrain, such that they could get a shot off before you can react, but they're rarely frustrating thanks to a lives system the game uses. Whilst the levels are, as the blurb says, "highly detailed", I rarely found myself stopping to look and appreciate it. It's pretty solid for its time however, so I can't really fault it for something that's out of its control. Music's alright, very much there for backing more than anything.

There's also a few non-story modes available, though I'll admit I didn't play those so I can't really comment. But if you have this thanks to a bundle, or spot it on sale, give it a go! A fun way to spend an afternoon.

This is a short and sweet 2D action platformer that I enjoyed. The art style is interesting, the story is simple and straightforward, and it has a little bit of combat complexity without overwhelming you or forcing you to become a twich lord to finish the game. There were a few times where objectives or game mechanics were less than clear, and those stood out as more than the slight speed bumps they were due to the frenetic pace the game maintains.

I love Apotheon, probably my favourite platformer of all time. I always wanted to try their other games. This one is 4 years earlier and actually their first game, and it kinda shows. Controls are very weird and floaty, the level design is a bit messy, and while the visuals look great they are confusingly blending everything you see in the screen together. The atmosphere is very good though, and the weapons feel meaty. Had a fun time with the first 5-6 levels but I can't force myself to continue.

Classic arcade 2D shooter. Looks great, chill gameplay with lots of weapons, has a challenging but fun max difficulty. If you're playing in 2023 put in windowed mode and put the game in 1080p resolution, then with borderless gaming make it fullscreen. Although if you have a really large 4K tv, you may be interested in the "Capsize resolution patcher" which will allow you to play at 4K resolution essentially making the whole level visible providing an incredibly awesome wall of art. I'll try to post a guide with a link to the patcher.

Graphics – Really cool and detailed, it really sets the mood and never lets up.
Soundtrack – 6/10.
Bugs - Control support is terrible and buggy, only play with M&KB.
Overall - Its a really cool to look at game but can be frustrating and tough at times to navigate. Its also very shot from start to finish but well worth a playthrough if you like odd 2D platformers.

Steamdeck compatibility is nearly perfect, just a button prompt mixup here and there. Performance-wise, to call capsized undemanding is an understatement, the deck only just warms up above idle for this, vs. rather convincing fan-heater impressions for many other titles i've played on the thing. I'm not far through yet but the gameplay seems solid enough, and the atmosphere and feeling of threat from this hostile alien world and its inhabitants is very effective. Touch-screen review, forgive the brevity.

Honestly this is one of the best indies ever made and literally seven people ever played it.

Short version:

“Long” version:
[u]Capsized[/u] is a 2D side-scroller which focuses on platforming, exploration, combat and physics-based puzzle solving. It was developed and published by AlienTrap.

This one is interesting to review. It is one of my first Steam purchases and it is a game I have “ignored” for years due to how unforgiving it seemed at first (I installed it once or twice to give it a try). While the first few levels are challenging and fair, it quickly grows into something much harder and I never found myself in the mood to get better at it.

Anyways, I was finally motivated to attempt a full playthrough. Here are my thoughts.

I appreciated the story. You play as a nameless crew member of a spaceship that crashed down on an unknown and hostile planet and your main goal is to find your crewmates, fix your ship and escape.
Even though the story is very simplistic and becomes rather repetitive at times in order to stretch out the duration of the game (you get item X, it breaks, now you need to find Y, it malfunctions, etc., etc.), I found the nameless, disposable characters very charming.
The story is presented in-between each chapter, using still-images in a comic-book style.
Nothing deep, but I liked it well-enough.

Gameplay is up next.
The controls are very intuitive. You have your standard movement and gunplay which are serviceable, but the game also gives you some tools which allow you to have more complex movement options. The grappling hook, for example, allows you to latch onto surfaces and enemies, diversifying your options a bit.

Movement is “OK”. While moving around and jumping is responsive, the more you play the game, the clunkier it gets. The grappling hook I mentioned before is supposed to help when it comes to traversal – and, granted, it does, for the most part. But when you take into consideration how every aspect of the game revolves around physics – your movement included – the grappling hook is rather frustrating to use. You have to be aware of your movement, which sometimes has a will of its own, the hordes of enemies that push you back or have attacks that reel you in, etc.

Combat starts out as very simplistic but enjoyable enough. But again, the more you progress through the game, the cheaper and less “fun” it becomes.
You get access to many new guns that range from strong to severely overpowered and frustrating to use, as many can (and most likely will, many, many times) kill you with big splash damage. You could clearly blame it on skill (or lack thereof) but when the game throws so many fast, flying enemies at you that can also be hard to spot because they blend into the environment and backgrounds… It feels unfulfilling.
I found myself wanting to fight enemies at first and after a few levels, I started avoiding quite a few of them. I relied on aggroing bigger enemies, one by one, and slowly whittling them down until none were left. It did not feel satisfying, I never felt I was getting “better” or more skilled, I just figured out how to cheese everything.

Side note: I did play it on the hardest difficulty, which damage boosts enemies, but still, luring enemies to you, on by one, is rather boring. If you play on an easier difficulty, you are able to last a bit longer but the difference is not that noticeable.
The levels have a lot of verticality and hidden secret areas with powerful temporary upgrades/weapons. While levels that follow the “A” to “B” approach are enjoyable, levels that have several “points of interest”/objectives tend to feel tacked on and are super frustrating.

Visually, [u]Capsized[/u] is gorgeous. Character design is fire, the environments look amazing and when I started playing it, I felt like I was truly lost in a dangerous alien world.
Enemies were basically camouflaging right in front of me, they felt dangerous and vicious. Once the game introduces the “humanoid” enemies, however, that cool dynamic sort of disappears and frustration ensues.
My only gripe with the lush visuals is that it is almost impossible to keep track of your reticule in the middle of the action and I found myself struggling to aim during heavy combat sequences.

The soundtrack rages from serviceable to very enjoyable. Sound effects could be better – they are very simplistic. Gun sounds are underwhelming along with most character sounds. There is no dialogue.

All in all, I had fun in the first five or so levels of [u]Capsized[/u]. The game sort of overstayed its welcome after that for me. Granted, maybe playing it on the hardest difficulty was not the smartest idea, but them again, there are no upgrades – there is no need for a first playthrough on normal. I rarely complain about a game being too difficult, I do complain when a game is cheap, however.

I am sure I am in the minority when I say I did not have a lot of fun playing [u]Capsized[/u] – I feel like most people will enjoy it more than I did, but they will also be able to see my gripes with it and maybe agree with some, if not most, of them.

As it stands, this game just is not for me.

[h1]Not bad for a two-man student gig[/h1]

Hehe I think Subnautica stole from this, the intro is almost an exact copy up until escape pod touches down. Basically you and your team are on space faring research assignment whose spaceship suddenly gets shoot down by unknown energy source originating from planet surface. But unlike our aquatic big brother the entire plot unfolds entirely on a lush overgrown jungle planet and is presented via rather wonderfully drawn comic book slides.
After emerging from the pod you have to set your bearings straight, find your scattered teammates, establish communication to call for help, and deal with numerous setbacks unfriendly natives will throw at you. All nicely spaced throughout 12 levels of increasing complexity, size, variety and of course difficulty.
It uses a life based system where you start each level with 5 and when killed, respawn is almost instant and near place of death. All pickups remain in inventory and enemies luckily stay dead. Levels take between 10 minutes up to an hour each if you take your time exploring.

When I first saw this game, back when you actually could stumble upon them easily since there weren't many around, I couldn't get over how cool it looked and played. It had that arcade machine pedigree that puts a glitter in your eye when you was a kid, something I still seek in games nowadays.

Gameplay is slightly more complex than what meets the eye. Besides standard moving, jumping & shooting, there's also: Jetpack, Gravity Hook, Ram (strong melee force), Flashlight, and every single weapon has an alternate fire, most of which quite useful. Abilities are gradually and seamlessly introduced during gameplay just before the need arises. All levels except the last have few secrets which are all visible but unreachable until you find entrance behind a fake wall, either very close of not far away but otherwise without any other visual indicator.
Despite more complexity that usual I never struggled with controls. Those are tight and precise, regardless of criticism. Floaty movement on the other hand requires some getting used to.

In many ways my expectations have been exceeded. I mean just look at those beautiful images! Fluidity of motion also deserves a mention as even in chaotic situations you have a good overview of carnage. On some occasions there will be quiet puzzle moments where you will interact with the environment and that came as a welcomed change of pace. If you get stuck I recommend watching store page trailer as it reveals some tricky points. Overall general aesthetic and level cohesion as a whole experience gets more than a passable grade from me.

Technically it's a bit of hit and miss. Performance is spectacular if you have the right tools (XNA Framework 3.1) which thankfully comes bundled otherwise game would not even start. Some achievements are broken unless you switch to dev branch (under BETAS) but that version requires XNA 4 which comes bundled with newer Windows? Just note progress is separate between versions so I recommend switching to dev build right away.

Probably the biggest misconception is that it is a fast paced 2D shooter. No it's not. It is slow paced majority of the time unless they meant fast paced getting killed simulator. Yeah the natives really have no manners and will try to ruthlessly kill you from beyond visual range usually.
Crucial ingredient is to take a chill but patient approach, taking as few enemies as you can at a time, and you'll start beating levels without dying in no-time. You can adjust difficulty for a very easy time if you just wish to get on with it without fear.
The devil lies in few hard-boiled achievements that take into account individual and cumulative level scoring but even those are only annoying because of repetition, not so much difficulty since they can be repeated indefinitely and best score will count. Look, my prime years are behind me and I still managed :)
If you adapt and curb your expectations a little then there is fun to be had here, trust me. There's always a magic discount if unconvinced.

I just wish they spiced things up a bit by letting you keep additional weapons and upgrades you collected on level transitions so it doesn't feel the same every damn time. As it stands you always begin every level with starting weapon and bare bone equipment. Some abilities to further upgrade yourself with spare parts of fallen comrades or something would also come handy. There is some repeatability in local MP and unlockable modes but for the most part after finishing you will probably never return to it.

Resolution support is limited to few fixed common ratios so you may want to [url=https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Capsized#Widescreen_resolution]patch executable yourself[/url] or live with game's own stretching/downscalling mechanism (downscale works pretty good btw). Tool only works on main branch exe though, for dev build you'll have to use binary comparison and your wits. Hex strings holding resolution information are identical in both cases.

One last minor gripe I had was subtle inconsistency between visual and actual level geometry. As wall jumping is very much a thing (as you'll see) there were many instances where I held onto nothing but thin air, with actual wall being a foot behind. In some rarer cases is can mess with your movement momentum or platforming precision.

At the end of the day I was pleasantly surprised by this nice looking polished indie that originally started as an undergraduate assignment, more so when you consider what rather unfavorable reviews lead on. It has been my wishlister for such a long time I had no choice but to finally to roll the dice. It may not be a jackpot but it certainly entertained more than expected.

There are a lot of neat ideas that are not implemented well. I really like the idea but the movement is very janky and you get stuck on absolutely nothing quite a lot. You can do insane things with the grapple and it's all fundamentally cludgy and broken.

I found a ridiculous number of bugs, ranging from sound abruptly stopping, then perhaps restarting out of nowhere 4 minutes later. All of the backgrounds disappearing at once. Another time my grapple decided it just wasn't going to grip onto anything ever again - it became a ghost rope. Another time projectiles wouldn't register collisions with enemies. Bugs flicker in and out of existence multiple times in a few short minutes and they are constant.

I really gave it my best shot but I just couldn't keep going with the insane physics and constant bugs. In some way exploitable physics make games fun, but here the physics come from another dimension, and once you figure out to cheat them the game is kinda meh... And you have to cheat them to play really, because navigating about "normally" is so difficult with all the collision problems and constantly sticking to everything.

Capsized was not an easy game for me to review. I admit that I even put it aside twice before I started to play it properly. But for some reason it always dragged me back to give it one more chance yet. On the positive side there are good level design, some refreshing ideas, variable enemies and weapons, nice graphics, effects and soundtrack, challenging and after all not so frustrating difficulty and grappling hook. There are also negatives like not so interesting story, monotonous environment and last but not least the controls that you would really need some time to get used to.

This isn't a terrible game. In fact, it has lots of things to like about it, and a lot of people would likely enjoy it a lot. If you're into 2D shooters, it might be worth a shot. And you might want a controller for this game.

I was really on the fence of whether to recommend this or not, but I ended on the latter. The reasons for not recommending it are as follows:

* The controls are just too damn complicated. Even after hours of playing, they still felt like something I needed to cope with to play the game, instead of something to make the game fun. Granted, it might be better playing with a controller, as I was playing with mouse and keyboard - but seeing as this is a computer game, I imagine mouse and keyboard is the way a lot of players go anyway.
* The graphics are very pretty, in that comic book style sort of way, but everything just blends together, and it's hard to differentiate enemies, environment, interactable objects, triggers, mission goals, and debris half the time.
* The level design really isn't much to write home about. It feels very random, often unintuitive, and sometimes straight up punishing. At one point the levels suddenly gets drastically larger, and unnecessarily so in my opinion.
* Three of the achievements are broken. The only way to get them are by editing/downloading and replacing a save file.
* How much health you have is both represented with a bar in the HUD, and visually. However, the more damage you take, the less you're able to see of the game, making it harder to avoid dying. So you're being punished for taking damage, which will lead to you taking more damage, and then you have that cycle going until you die or manage to find some health,
* I died too many times of weapon auto switching to some heavy explosive and blowing myself up. Maybe there's an option to turn off weapon auto switching - if so, I highly recommend doing that if you're going to play this game.
* A few of the weapons are just too similar. Developer should've at least given them different colours to differentiate them easily.
* Getting stuck in landscape or interactive objects, accidentally getting objects stuck in places where they're in your way, finicky gravity that not only changes throughout the levels, but also in various parts of a level, and forgetting that the grappling hook is holding you in place were constant annoyances.

The positives about this game is that although cluttered, the graphics are very nice, and the music is alright. The story is interesting enough. The gameplay works if you can do the controls. (Again, should probably have a controller for this game!)

My final thoughts are that this game could probably be much, much better with just a handful of smaller changes to it - and by playing with a controller.
