Beneath a Steel Sky is a cyberpunk, point and click, adventure game. You assume the role of Robert Foster and embark on a quest to make the world a better place, along with your robot companion Joey.
Robert Foster was stranded as a child in a place called The Gap. There he was adopted by the local Aboriginals living there. After several years The Gap is attacked by security officers, killing the locals and taking Robert back to Union City. He manage to escape and finds out more and more about the corruption that runs society.

Recuerdo jugar a este juego un buen cacho hace unos cuantos veranos. La historia y el mundo que presenta me parecen interesantes, con una estética industrial y un pixel art muy bien trabajado. Más allá de eso, es un point and click típico de los 90, no tiene mucha complicación... y he de decir que me dio unos cuantos quebraderos de cabeza que el juego no tenga guardado manual: cada vez que salía tenía que empezar de cero.
No me terminé la historia, igual algún día me salen las ganas y me lo paso de un tirón.

It's a 90 classic for sure. But clearly not the best of that time, do it if you are a purist to say you did it, but Harvester, Sanitarium or I Have no Mouth are MUCH more inspired and deep.

Conclusion :
Très déçu de ce jeu Revolution Software après avoir adoré les premiers Broken Sword. Je n'ai pas retrouvé ce qui faisait leur charme. De plus, techniquement il a très mal vieilli et il faut vraiment s'accrocher pour résister...
Aventura gráfica sencilla de época, pero ese encanto lo pierde con sus rompecabezas. Muchos de ellos son tediosos porque no sabes por dónde van los tiros y esto al ser vital para la historia te tiras dando vueltas y vueltas un buen rato (gracias, guías).
No es un portento visual, pero este mundo "cyberpunk" tiene su encanto.
La narrativa del juego me ha parecido buena en cuanto a personajes, teniendo un humor curioso y unos diálogos chistosos a la par que informativos, pero, el entramado pero me ha parecido algo lioso y difícil de llevar en ocasiones, quizá arraigado al quebradero de cabeza que es avanzar.
La banda sonora se te queda en la cabeza con ese bucle rítmico, pero en ningún momento se te llega a hacer pesado.

Довольно мрачный (как и полагается) представитель жанра Киберпанк, разбавленный колоритным юмором. Весьма красивая и стильная в художественном плане классика. Вторая игра Revolution Software.
Будучи незнакомым с творчеством сей студии, увидел и заинтересовался как-то сиквелом данной игры: Beyond a Steel Sky. Приобрёл на распродаже и по традиции – игра настаивалась. А могла стать первой ласточкой в знакомстве с творчеством Revolution. Но таковой стал "перекованный", легендарный Сломанный меч. Да и чтобы приступить, стоило окунуться в "ностальгию" (которую не пришлось испытывать), и пройти данную часть.
Жанр "Квест", он же Point & Click любим с детства. Правда заходит сильно под настроение, и далеко не все игры тех лет ощупаны. А тут такой подарок в виде бесплатной копии. Да и настрой сопутствующий. Мне игра понравилась как есть: эмулятор ScummVM; ощущения будто запустил игру из-под MS-DOS. Разве что ЭЛТшного монитора не хватает для полного погружения. Да и играл я с геймпадом в руках, дабы в дисплей не залипать глазами (спасибо Steam за такую возможность). И всё же вот бы ремастер этой игры: с ачивками; подтянутыми, высококачественными артами, как того наверняка хотелось разработчикам но те не могли воплотить в реальность, в виду технологий тех лет.
I still remember the first impression me and a few friends had in front of the opening scenes of this game. Beneath a Steel Sky features what I have no doubt calling some of the best 2D graphics ever made at the time, and they still impress today for the level of detail of the backgrounds, the fine quality of the pixel art characters, and the even finer animations. VGA at its best. Having comic book legend Dave Gibbons in the team paid off, including a nice introductory comic which this CD version smartly turns into a motion comic that opens the game. [With some fiddling it's also possible to play the floppy intro with its iconic music, which I hum from time to time still nowadays]
Under such sumptuous "vest", the adventure is rock solid, save for a few instances of pixel hunting. It's not the longest or most difficult in the genre but has quite a few good puzzles to offer and mostly pretty logical, or rather, logical in the world it is set in, as you will need to enter the cyberspace several times. They are integrated within brilliant world-building and writing; of note are the dialogues of Joey, one of the best (and sassiest) robotic partners ever seen in a game.
My only notable issue is with the tone, which is not always consistent. It's supposed to be a fairly bleak dystopian cyberpunk but it often gets quite light-hearted, even if some of the dark humour is appreciated. Apparently there was some contrast during development about what direction to give to the writing, and that clearly reflects on the final product. To be fair, though, it also gives BASS its own unique flavor.
While some audio tracks give the appropriate mood (like the very first your hear when you start controlling Foster), others are too "happy", better keep the music volume down.
No doubt an adventure classic, which put Revolution on the map (and contrarily to Lucasarts, they are still around), and it's also been free since 2003. There's literally no excuse for not playing it.

Dialogues are mostly there for the sake of progression. The game also explains the world the characters lived in. In my opinion, they are well thought out. It has a lot of originality and makes the game unique. However, that's all the story has. The dialogues tend to be bland most of the time, and the only saving grace is the main character's robotic companion, which has an attitude that is reflected in its dialogues. The game starts with a cutscene with no subtitles. The voice was full of noise and hard to listen to, and they were presented with a slideshow rather than an animation. Still, for a game that old, it's understandable given the limitations. However, the same can't be said for the controls. The game never specifies how to use an object or even save the game, to the point that I thought it wanted me to finish the game in one sitting. Luckily, a simple online search will show how to do these things, although I would appreciate it if the game explained it anyway.
Being a point-and-click game, you are supposed to explore the area, pick up objects, and talk to people. Sometimes, finding the object that you can use with your items can be challenging since some of them are small and concealed around another object that can also be interacted with. Moreover, the game has a lot of areas that you can explore. Most of these areas are still accessible even after you reach new locations, and you are supposed to move between the old and new locations to progress the game.

The numerous screens and the cryptic puzzle mean that it will be hard to solve the puzzles. Some of them are almost impossible to figure out unless you know what you are doing. For example, there is this puzzle where you are supposed to talk to someone who is moving to different locations from time to time, and the dialogue will only unlock after you do a certain action. Unless you are talking to everyone after you progress the game a tiny bit, there is no way you'll know what to do next.
Moreover, the game can be quite buggy when you are talking to people who walk around. There is an animation that will make them walk to a certain location, and if your original position blocks the path, the game will freeze a bit before you can control the game, removing all interactions that are supposed to happen.

I hate the instant deaths. They are unpredictable and getting more frequent as you are nearing the end. Moreover, some of them don't make sense either, requiring you to do trial and error to figure out what went wrong. Furthermore, the game only has manual save, and getting unexpected death means that you need to rely on your latest manual save and hope it's not too far from where you were.
The puzzles don't make sense. You can talk to the NPCs to figure out the context and what went wrong, but sometimes they won't give any. You are supposed to know what the game wants and spend time figuring out how to proceed on your own without hints. This just forces you to waste time searching for what to do if you play the game blind.

I finished the game in 4.1h. I played the game blind at first and then got softlocked in the second area. I ended up replaying the game from scratch after that and consulted a guide to avoid the same mistake. The game can be hard to finish if you play blind, although there are many guides that you can look up online if you need some help.

Jugué este clásico 30 años después de su estreno y ni noté el paso del tiempo, hubiese colado por aventura gráfica de ahora con estilo pixel art.
Es una historia realmente original, bien narrada y con una dificultad, para lo que eran este tipo de juegos en su día, bastante asequible.
Encima gratis, pues de lujo.
Élveztem ezt a régi, klasszikus játékot. Nem mondanám könnyűnek a rejtvényeket benne, és utólag nézve elég logikusak, de néhányszor teljesen elakadtam és leíráshoz kellett nyúlni. Anélkül nekem a végigjátszása a többszöröse lett volna időben (a mindent mindennel kipróbálok módszerrel), de volt annyira érdekes, hogy végig akartam vinni. Főleg a végére fogyott el a türelmem. Néhány helyen sajnos szenved attól a betegségtől, hogy a pixelvadászat közben annyira kis területet kellett volna megtalálni, hogy elsiklottam felette többször is.

So I finished it, but not really all by myself, because I never had any idea wtf I was doing at any point. There is no story, goal, sense of direction or accomplishment of any kind. There is really a background, story and narrative missing here, because none of it made any sense. What is the point, what am I trying to accomplish, what's next? This is the first time ever that I've felt completely stumped about the point and purpose about an Adventure game. I played lots of Adventure games in the nineties (Monkey Island 1 + 2, Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis, Myst, 7th Guest, Day of the Tentacle, Gabriel Knight Sins of the Father, Full Throttle all appeared before or around the time of this game), but this is by far the crappiest game I have ever encountered.
Dialogue and voices are all pretty lame.
And the music, truly horrible. Everytime I turn it off, it switch back on in the next scene. Only way to get rid of it permanently is to dive into the bass.ini file and set "music_driver=null".
I highly recommend using a walkthrough and save often.

Wunderbares Point & Click-Adventure aus 1994, mit viel Charme und Humor.
Ein Hubschrauber stürzt in den Ödlanden ab, unsere Mutter stirbt dabei und wir werden von freundlichen Menschen aufgenommen. Als wir schon erwachsen sind, kommen auf einmal Sicherheitskräfte aus Union City und suchen uns. Nach unserer Verhaftung töten die gleich unsere neue Familie und fliegen mit uns zur Stadt. Der Hubschrauber stürzt ab (schon wieder) und wir überleben als Einziger. Also machen wir uns auf die Suche nach Antworten und bringen die Sache ins Lot.
Das alles erleben wir in schön gezeichneter, pixeliger Grafik, die natürlich Welten hinter der Grafik des Nachfolgers von 2020 zurückhängt, aber immer noch zu gefallen weiß. Die tolle (englische) Sprachausgabe sorgt für gute Stimmung, die Untertitel sind auf Deutsch. Einzig die Musik (die man auch nicht ganz ausstellen kann) kratzt ein wenig an den Nerven. Ansonsten versteht man die Steuerung sofort und taucht ein in eine schöne Geschichte.
I'm a big fan of point and click adventure games from the "golden age" and somehow I missed this one. Trying it now in 2025 and I gotta say....it's not holding up for me. The puzzles so far are not intuitive and the character's motivations are not clear, especially in the first part of the top level. I am familiar with the difficulty of games from this era but this one just isn't "clicking" for me. I am using a walkthru because it's been a super frustrating xp and there's really no explanation (esp in the early game) or hints that would direct your actions aside from the general requirement to leave the level. Then there's the problem with the music and the sound fx which are SO LOUD and do not seem to respond to the controls in the menu as the sound resets itself every time you leave a room. The dialog animations are irritating as the NPCs and the main character are required to move into a set position to talk and then reset following the conversation which all leads to slow down in the gameplay. Also, the robot companion Joey can get lost or block you into spaces or even doorways and which then interrupts or slows gameplay. In brief, this game feels a slog. I'm sure for some there's a nostalgia hit that this game will scratch but when I compare to other contemporaneous adventure games from Sierra or LucasArts for example, this one doesn't make the grade.

Сюжет запутан, некоторые головоломки не логичны, охота за пикселями начинает приедаться уже с первых часов, звуковое сопровождение однообразно. Свободное перемещение персонажей - это здорово, но иногда из-за этого их бывает сложно найти, как и нашего бравого робота. Игра пытается быть остроумной, весёлой, серьёзной, а иногда и глубокой. Но, к сожалению, ей не удалось ни то, ни другое.
Исключительно для фанатов старой школы и творчества Revolution, игре нечего предложить игроку, который берет ее в руки впервые.

В роли Роберта Фостера мы попадаем в футуристический город Союз, управляемый всесильным компьютером. Графика, конечно, устарела, но уникальный стиль Гиббонса и запоминающиеся локации с лихвой это компенсируют. Диалоги искрометные, персонажи харизматичны, а сюжет держит в напряжении до самого конца. Особенное очарование игре придает искусственный интеллект Джои, который становится верным спутником Фостера и источником бесконечных комичных ситуаций.

Ein weiterer Point & Click-Klassiker, hab ich damals fix ohne Lösung geschafft. Heute fehlt mir dafür die Geduld. Insbesondere die "Cyberspace"-Rätsel waren ... naja, Kinder ihrer Zeit. Manche Rätsel kannte ich zwar noch, ein paar andere hab ich nachgelesen. Nicht (mehr) ganz mein Genre, aber für eine Nostalgie-Runde dennoch absolut herrlich, super Spiel!

The king of subtlety
I’ve always been a sucker for anything with a dystopian setting, and Beneath a Steel Sky scratches that itch perfectly. Set in a bleak, industrial future ruled by corporate greed and class division, this classic point and click adventure captures the gritty atmosphere of cyberpunk Britain like few others of its time. You play as Robert Foster, a man kidnapped from the wastelands and thrown into the heart of a massive city governed by a totalitarian computer system. There's alot to unpack from its setting and the characters are well written enough. It does fall victim to the same issues of older point and click games with having obtuse puzzles that make no sense but the narrative makes up for it. For a 1994 release, the game’s visual style and worldbuilding are impressive. The backgrounds are packed with detail. The hand-drawn art gives the whole experience a distinctive graphic novel feel that still holds up today.
Simple and fun. Hard to play without getting hint, but still had fun and the writing was great. 7/10

VERY old school but best to play this before playing Part 2 :D Never got around to finishing this as a kid. But I will always remember that small computer shop in Canada where I first encountered it. In those days you could open the box up and test it in the shop!

Great visuals and old school retro vibes, music however is not up to standard. Puzzles are rather difficult and often require pixel hunting, PC is not entirely safe and can die, so it's not as chilled as most modern adventure games. Scumm itself stands the test of time, nothing to complain about it.
All in all free classic worth checking.
Even though the graphics are pixelated its a very good game with an interesting story. Some of the puzzles are tricky but you can use the walk-through in the games guide section.
The game is free and so I definitely recommend you give this a try.

Teaboy's Basic(ish) Reviews....I read a lot of reviews when looking at games on Steam, and it quickly gets tiring – those who write involved, down to the micron scale reviews, although helpful, end up like looking at War & Peace when you’ve only got time for a quick 5 minute dump! This is middle of the road and to the point – not easy for me as I tend towards sesquipedalian loquaciousness! Vociferously Verbose? Alright, verbal diarrhoea. (Although I hate panning a developer’s work and all the time, effort and love they put into designing these – it is their life after all – this is my honest, personal opinion of my level of enjoyment. Sorry devs!).
A note on time played: My Steam clock does not seem to work properly, indeed, it even minuses time on occasion! Plus, I have a tendency to wander off and leave games running at times, so time played may not be entirely accurate!
Teaboy’s Tonsil Titillators or Toenail Titbits! (Rating)
Tonsil Tickler (Totally Tops): The frenchy of which you always dreamt! To quote a master, “She’s got a tongue like an electric eel and she likes the taste of a Man’s tonsils!”. An absolute masterpiece and joy to play.
The Tits (Terrific): Everyone loves playing with these! Not THE best bit, but such fun on their own you can be lost for hours....mmmm. What most games you really like score – perfection is so rare after all.
Torso Teaser (Taker of your Time): It’s a flat stomach....sure it’s nice to look at, run your fingers over, slobber on a bit, sometimes that bellybutton gets your motor running....but it's just basically the corridor between the two ‘gaming rooms’. The definitive ‘Meh’ - the middle ‘sideways thumb’ option for which everyone on Steam cries.
Todger/Tadger & (scroTum) Taters (Tedious): Is it an ‘a’ or is it an ‘o’? Who cares! The meat can be fun to play with for about 5 minutes of your entire day, the rest it just hangs there and generally gets in the way of doing something else. The main problem of course, is the two veg sticking to your inside thigh. This is what this game feels like – the occasional/rare bouts of fun, the rest bobbing like a 19th century British Policeman (now you know why!).
Toenail Tornado (Total Toss): A playthrough so appalling it’s like being trapped in a Turkish sauna with the ugliest, hairiest, fattest, sweatiest beast of a neolithic hominid who’s trimming his toenails using pliers and the splinters are reminiscent of a scene from the Normandy Landings. My god how did this get released!?

Bring back the 1990's!
Yes, I've only given it the medium score, but that's simply due to its, er, simplicity....in comparison to modern games, at least....but I have upgraded it to halfway between the higher score because it is, simply, a good and entertaining game. It is flawless bar a single glitch where talking to the barman after the first conversation soft locks (so don't speak to him ever again lol), but you can just restore the last autosave, which is quite good so you don't lose ages of gameplay, only a couple of minutes at most.
Graphics and sound are par for the genre of the period, which btw was quite good for its time! Voiceovers are brilliant, where actors actually take pride in their work, regardless of format - we still get games to this day voiced by stroppy teenagers forced to do it whilst still in their school uniform by parent-programmers, and they suck!
The puzzles are also par for the period, where they can be real head-scratchers but do make sense, unlike a lot of horror Resident Evil clones! Sadly there is the curse of the period which was known as 'pixel-hunting', for there are a few bits where tiny things on-screen need clicking on and are ALWAYS missed for ages (until you look at a guide) - I honestly missed an entire door due to its small size in the distance, and then there was a metal plate next to it!
But, once again, due to the period it is from, quality is assured! The story is good, everything makes sense, it flows well for a game where you are regularly stuck until you figure it out....its only flaw would be needing to revisit old areas - at least for me cos I had hoped they were done with lol! But fair is fair, you should expect to revisit basically every map, area, level and room in puzzle games like this - I always do ;p

Como tal, está considerado un juego de culto dentro de las aventuras gráficas, y entre sus principales virtudes se encuentra ese hecho en particular: ofrecer una distopía ciberpunk cuando no era la norma ni mucho menos a principios de los 90 en este tipo de juegos, cuando las aventuras gráficas dominaban el espectro del mundo del PC sobre cualquier otro género existente.
De todos modos, y esto es una opinión subjetiva, aunque está considerado como un juego de culto, no llega al nivel de los Monkey Island, los Simon The Sorcerer, la saga Broken Sword, Day of Tentacle o similares. Ya sabes, las joyas de la corona de este género. Aun así, en su momento fue bastante reconocido y está gratis, ya que Revolution sacó su continuación hace unos años y ofreció esta precuela de manera gratuita.

Al ser una aventura lanzada en 1994, Beneath a Steel Sky es una aventura gráfica de manual. Si te gustan ese tipo de juegos, muy probablemente lo disfrutarás bastante. Como solía ser la norma por aquel entonces, el juego tiene un argumento serio, pero ofrece también bastantes pinceladas humorísticas, lo cual es muy de agradecer. Además, es curioso ver cómo algunas de las cosas que aparecen en el juego y que se muestran como una distopía de ciencia ficción no lo son tal hoy en día en ciertos aspectos, algo preocupante sin duda.
El juego, por tanto, se basa en recoger objetos y utilizarlos con el entorno, así como utilizarlos entre ellos dentro del inventario, aunque esto último se hace en muy pocas ocasiones y para momentos muy determinados de la aventura, mientras mantenemos gran cantidad de conversaciones con los diferentes personajes que pueblan el lugar, aunque tampoco serán demasiados, la verdad.
Como adición más original se encuentra nuestro amigo robot, el cual nos acompañará durante buena parte de la aventura y tendremos que pedirle que haga determinadas cosas. Aunque realmente tiene un papel jugable mucho menor de lo que podría esperarse en un principio.
[h1]Una historia interesante que no engancha de primeras[/h1]
Si le preguntas a mucha gente que conoce y ha jugado muchas aventuras gráficas, la mayoría te dirán que conocen este juego, pero que o bien no lo han jugado o que lo jugaron poco. La razón es que al juego le cuesta arrancar un poco, aunque luego todo mejora.
Al comenzar nuestra aventura, nuestro protagonista aparece una zona llamada el Gap, una especie de tierras baldías donde viven los descastados de la tierra y donde él llegó siendo muy pequeño. En un momento determinado unos soldados atacan el campamento donde estamos y se llevan a nuestro protagonista a la ciudad, y ahí comenzará la aventura. Nuestro objetivo será averiguar qué está pasando y nuestro pasado.
No es que sea una historia muy original, pero sí lo es a la hora de llevarla a cabo. Plantea situaciones bastante curiosas relacionadas con el mundo virtual, algo que por aquella época no era habitual ni mucho menos. Sin embargo, sí que es cierto que al principio hay que forzarse un poco para continuar con la historia. La razón no la tengo muy clara, pero le ha pasado a mucha gente. Igual es porque no engancha su historia al principio hasta que no se desarrolla un poco más al poder visitar la ciudad. Yo mismo lo tenía como pendiente desde hacía décadas, y hacerme con su continuación fue la excusa perfecta para pasármelo.
¿Diría que es una gran aventura al nivel de las nombradas anteriormente u otras? Realmente no, en mi opinión, pero eso de los gustos ya es muy personal. No es una mala aventura gráfica, eso seguro, pero tampoco la recordaré en el tiempo como una gran experiencia. La saga Broken Sword, de los mismos creadores, es infinitamente mejor. Concretamente el 1, el 2 y el 5.
Eso sí, si vas a jugarlo, ya que es gratis, recuerda que tienes que modificar el archivo “Bass.ini” y modificar las dos entradas donde ponga “en” y “English”, por “es” y “Spanish”. Es fácil. De lo contrario el juego tendrá los textos en inglés (“language=es” y “guioptions=lang_Spanish”).

Beneath a Steel Sky gustará a los amantes de las aventurás gráficas clásicas y muy especialmente a todos aquellos que disfruten con futuros distópicos. Tiene algunos momentos bastante interesantes y en general es bastante entretenida. Para todos los demás no creo que merezca la pena, aunque está gratis, y eso siempre es un plus.
Despite the odd characterization of the main character and a very inconsistent tone, the game provides frequently funny conversations and a great companion in the robot Joey who I only wish followed you a bit faster at times.
Beneath a Steel Sky is a point and click adventure games that uses a conversation system where you ask people different questions and find and use items by viewing your inventory when you hover over the top of the screen. The plot starts with a motion comic style opening that also has a real comic of the opening cutscenes included as an extra, this depicts your character as a child surviving an airship crash that kills your mother. The crash takes place outside of the city limits in "the Gap", a tribe of people find and adopts you and raises you into adulthood. You build a robot companion you name Joey with parts found. Eventually armed men from the city arrive looking for you, eventually capturing you and blowing up the area killing your friends and family. Another crash when returning to the city allows you to escape with you now needing to find out why someone wanted you captured and who you are.
For the short length of the game the story is good and reveals more about the plot, characters, and world as you progress with small details found in notes and messages read on terminals. The tone of the game is wildly inconsistent. Opening with you captured, your friends and adoptive family being murdered, and you swearing revenge on the man who did it to having frequent light humor in almost everything, to jokes and one liners after the man behind your tribe's death is brutally killed, to finding more information about your parents and the dystopian city life, to adult innuendo when you find things like a "♥♥♥♥♥ parade" video tape that you play on a TV to find that it's a collections of cat videos to distract a dog, to finding one of the people who have been helping you dead and stuffed in a locker, to acting as the surprise defense in a criminal case that the judge believes to be a game show, all while your smart ass robot is following you around everywhere, etc. Your character's personality makes no sense as he grew up in a harsh wasteland environment hunting and scavenging but he has a very sarcastic personality and is frequently referencing modern conveniences and ideas that even many of the people in the city probably don't have. It's an odd game where I still mostly enjoyed every part of it conversation wise, and the entire thing is very poorly voiced acted in a way that eventually just made me like it even more.
Downsides of the game involve items you can easily not notice and ones you need to save for some time for unlikely situations. The moments when you go inside of the computer system are about as bad as pretty much any game when you go inside any computer system. Despite being a fugitive you really don't feel like you are in any danger or being hunted even though people frequently mention that people are looking for you, this is even stranger as you go around asking everyone basic who, what, where, and why questions about everything. Joey is a constantly entertaining companion but can be slow to follow you, and it is kind of a shame more of the focus or multiple solutions weren't made around taking his circuit board to swap him onto different robot bodies when you need something for a puzzle as opposed to the way it was done with it just needing to happen at different story moments.

It absolutely doesn't hold up and I'm kind of floored by how positive the reviews were in the 90's.
This game was decently entertaining. I had a good time learning about the story along the journey, and I really love the vibe of Union City, i love dystopian cities like that. The puzzles that I had to solve felt a little too convoluted, I'd recommend using a spoiler-free guide if you're having trouble! But other than that I liked this game, i'd recommend it. It IS free after all.
One of the best point and clicks ever, i have known about this game for a very long time, decades even, now the pixel art is amazing, but some times it is lost in the very low resolution, i had to find an old laptop to play it on, to make it out, this game is one that could do with a tasteful remaster. But dont let these short coming put you off, this is a brilliant game, great story and vocal performances, and graphics too, if you can find an old monitor or tv from the 90s it would look amazing, bar that a small laptop screen is it, my old thinkpad, that now runs in ubuntu did nicely.

I LOVE this game. It has that perfectly 2000AD vibe where the future is both horrifically dystopian but also farcically stupid. There's a solid core of British irony at the heart of this. This is more 2000AD-coded that any *actual* 2000AD game I could name. The contributions by Dave Gibbons certainly don't hurt!
The puzzles are never tough *until* a couple of frustrating pixel-hunts in the final act, where you're very likely to miss the minute parts of the background that are apparently different and that you're supposed to interact with. My only other frustration is the bizarre pathing: characters *insist* on walking up to you when talking to you and this is both unnecessary and leads to some weird, time-consuming collisions with other characters.
Still, these are my only complaints and they're both extremely minor. All in all, this is a point-and-click MUST PLAY.

I remember playing it as a kid, probably too young to understand all the themes, but old enough to know that this game was cool. A grungy city in the sky, sinister corporations, and a sarcastic robot sidekick named Joey who somehow managed to steal every scene he was in. The pixel art was gritty and beautiful in that retro-future way, and the writing—courtesy of Watchmen’s own Dave Gibbons—was sharp, funny, and just a little bit haunting. You play as Robert Foster, a man with a mysterious past and a killer leather jacket, dropped into a totalitarian megacity where people are just cogs in a broken machine. The puzzles? Classic ‘90s adventure game logic: part clever, part "what do you mean I had to use the wrench there?" But it didn’t matter. You wanted to explore, to poke at the world, to hear what every weird NPC had to say. And the tone—man, the tone. It walked that tightrope between humor and despair so well. One minute you’re laughing at Joey’s latest insult, the next you’re uncovering a horrifying truth about how society functions in this bleak future. It was dystopia with personality, darkness with a pixelated wink. Is it dated? Of course. It’s a relic of its time. But it holds up in all the ways that matter. The story is still clever. The world is still compelling. And if you grew up with games like Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle, this one feels like discovering a forgotten VHS tape of your favorite sci-fi show—low-fi, a little dusty, but absolutely worth watching again.

Beneath a steel sky is a 31 year old story driven, point and click adventure game developed for MS-DOS and Amiga computer systems. I would say I have an okay-ish exposure to point and click adventure games and I think this game isn't good, yes even for its time.
The game-play is all about dialogues, interaction, exploration and collecting items in order to solve interactive puzzles and experience the story. In my experience I would say a lot of the puzzles are intuitive and can be solved with reasonable thinking or by interacting with every interact-able in the area with every item (brute force). But unfortunately there fair few puzzles that simply make no sense, sometimes you can't find an item because its just a handful of pixels and blends in with the background and you keep walking past it over and over, sometimes there are bunch of similar items that can't be interacted with but one of them can be, sometimes you are not supposed to interact with the interact-able but instead a small group of pixels on the interact-able(which is a completely different interact-able) and so on. Overall, the game has a lot of these frustrating moments where you are stuck and when you look up the walk-through you just feel "how was i supposed to know that".
But believe me when I say that the worst part of the game isn't the dated game-play, it's the overall story and writing. I can look past old and dated game-play if it means that the story or the overall experience is good. But the only way I can describe this game's story and setting without getting into detail/spoilers is unambitious and generic. The story and setting is a generic retro-future cyberpunk world inspired from the works of Phillip K. ♥♥♥♥ and William Gibson both in aesthetic and themes but the game does not explore or build upon any of them. It instead presents a generic cyberpunk dystopian world with resource inequality and corruption(never explored), one dimensional characters that serve no greater purpose other than solving puzzles, and a lacklustre mystery that has very little build up, no stakes or tension and with very little impact (and does not even make much sense).
And look, I know this game is old and having a new and well written story was not on developers list at the time, but they could have at least come up with a memorable and standout experience. Original doom and system shock both came in the same year on same platforms and are way more memorable experiences, ff 6 also in the same year, monkey island came out in 1990, so i don't think there is much of an excuse why the story can not be a memorable and entertaining experience.
The only good things about this game is that it's free, very much playable (very minor bugs), feels like an adventure (but not all that good), a decent art-style (although a little dated), decent voice acting and some moments that are fine, but even though it's free you still pay with your time which you can instead use for playing or doing something else.

Historia con ambientación de ciencia ficción, recuerda a la novela 1984 de George Orwell. Lamentablemente los eventos son incoherentes, ya que el protagonista escapa con facilidad en un estado policial repleto de cámaras de seguridad y control social. Cinemáticas decentes en estilo cómic.
Puzles absurdos y aburridos, aunque las conversaciones sí son bastante elaboradas. Eventos programados que son excesivamente forzados con una IA de personajes deficiente, incapaz de darse cuenta de lo evidente.
Animaciones y gráficos retro pixelados decentes, adaptándose la resolución casi por completo a mi monitor 16:9, excepto por una pequeña franja horizontal en la parte inferior.
Audio mediocre, en algunos casos se escucha ruido de mala calidad, típico de la época de MS-DOS.
Música de aceptable calidad, sin destacar.

If you have any nostalgia (or interest) in old school point-and-click adventures this is an engaging story with double-entendres that will make you smirk. Also a few story moments where I outright laughed. It's relaxing, potentially frustrating fun. I played with a guide at the ready to avoid obtuse time wasters. FWIW: Give the game 15-30' to get going and get the hang of it; if you're not enjoying yourself after that you probably won't as it goes on.

Также стоит отметить юмор и музыку в игре. Юмор в игре неплох и смог меня рассмешить, особенно сцены в зале суда и реплики главного героя. Музыка же получилась приятной и не надоедала.

You probably already know from the trailer if this is even remotely for you. I appreciated playing through this game out of historical interest but to be honest, [b]I would not recommend it to most players today[/b]. It's very playable -- [i][u][b]far[/b][/u][/i] more playable than the [i]Neuromancer (1988)[/i] game -- but I think most folks could get as much out of watching a play-through as they would from playing it. I would offer a "neutral" review if I could, but since I can't, I am going to rely on the game's aged appearance to scare most people away, and I'll offer a tentative thumbs up for the folks who haven't run.
If you're one of the relatively small group of folks who have some historical background with this game and you're already rubbing your hands together with a twinkle of nostalgia in your eyes, then you'll probably enjoy revisiting it. If you (like me) just enjoy sampling old Point & Clicks for the sake of exploring "vintage" entries in the [i]genre[/i], then the trailer may well have sold you already.
It's not the worst game, but I did not really find it very remarkable. It's a pretty small world littered with puzzles that usually feel more clunky than clever, strung together with hammy characters and goofy, throwaway dialogue. The dystopian (and yes, it is dystopian and dark and morally fraught) and semi-cyberpunk theme and narrative may have been somewhat unique at the time, but they are pretty unfocused and tame by today's standards. Dave Gibbons' art might have been a talking point for this review if I could get the "comic" DLC to work on Steam -- but I could not, so it isn't. You'd be better off just searching for it online.

I love this kind of point and click games! Superb story telling and emotionally charged. Lots of witty and funny dialogue. I came to this game after playing a few hours if Beyond the Steel Sky. I am really glad i came back. I wasn't clever enough for the puzzles and needed some help. Only then was I able to enjoy the writing and drama.
The length and depth of the story was really long for a game from the 90s, and the visuals, music, and voice acting were really well done, everything considered.

C'est un classique, mais j'étais passé à côté de ce point & click, bien que le connaissant de nom depuis des années. Voulant jouer à son successeur, je me suis dit que ce serait quand même pas mal de faire celui là avant. Si les premiers tableaux m'ont rappelé quelque chose (j'ai donc dû y jouer un peu il y a longtemps), ce n'était que quelques tableaux.
L'histoire est plutôt solide, l'ambiance de la ville futuriste où certains aspects partent un peu en vrille est bien rendue.
Niveau réalisation... eh bien le jeu a 30 ans, et ça se sent. Les graphismes sont datés, mais pas désagréables. On peut parfois rater un objet dans le décor par contre, ça m'est arrivé à deux reprises sur la durée du jeu, complètement bloqué pour avoir raté un objet. Les bruitages sont assez pénibles, et si la musique est probablement sympathique avec un bon support MIDI, la version adlib devient un peu pénible à la longue.
Le doublage est assez inégal, heureusement le personnage principal bénéficie d'un bon doublage. Certains autres sont... nettement moins bon. La qualité sonore n'est pas toujours au top, mais pour un jeu qui a 30 ans, on est bien.
Il y a pas mal d'objets dans le décor qui ne servent pas à grand chose, notre personnage se fera toutefois un grand plaisir de nous les décrire quand on clique dessus. Le gameplay est correct, clic gauche pour regarder, clic droit pour interagir. On peut annuler un déplacement entamé, par contre il n'y a pas de déplacement rapide entre les tableaux (un peu agaçant quand on veut aller à l'autre bout de la ville).
L'iinventaire n'est pas au top, les descriptions des objets sont très rapides, le texte disparait bien trop vite pour qu'on ait le temps de tout lire. On peut cliquer à nouveau rapidement toutefois. La façon dont on fait interagir des objets entre eux n'est pas très claire, mais ce n'est que très rarement utilisé.
Les énigmes ne sont pas très difficiles, sauf quand on rate un objet dans le décor comme ça m'est arrivé. Les conversations avec les autres personnages ne sont pas très poussées non plus. Il y a quelques énigmes avec du timing, mais le timing reste large.
A noter qu'on peut mourir, donc pensez à sauvegarder de temps en temps. II y a une sauvegarde automatique, mais elle peut se déclencher à un moment inopportun (ie: après le début d'une séquence où on va mourir dans tous les cas).

Very fun adventure game
Good, but not Great
Finally I've had the almost-pleasure of playing it, the '94 classic of the adventure point 'n' click genre. Beneath a Steel Sky is intriguing; starts off with a solid intro, puts you into a post-apocalyptic, retro futuristic and heavily industrialized setting with little background story to get you going. From then on, you're on your own. You have to piece the story together yourself by listening, reading and interacting with everything and everyone around you (it's definitely not up to everyone's taste, but I absolutely love the slow pace gameplay inherent in the genre).
The pixel art style is beautiful and has aged well. The surroundings are bleak, dystopian and invoking nostalgia, melancholy and a sense of loss. Note: I would recommend that you scout the guides section under the community tab, there's a well written line of code in one of the guides that you could put in your game's ini file that makes you play it in a more optimized, and more importantly, minimized custom window mode.
Unfortunately, the VA is not good at all. You could easily tell it was done by a few devs in the sanctity of their basement (which I guess was the nerd staple of the beloved 90s), but it should've been executed SO much better. Luckily, (MC's) Robert Foster's voice was done very well and I must commend the actor for it. The rest was just forgettable and painful at best. The background SFX and music were OK for the most part, however, if you do get stuck in the game (and don't want to cheat your way out), you'll probably be forced to turn them off for a considerable amount of time as they will drive you insane.
Overall, the story is not that good, it is confusing and simple at the same time, and leaps from one point to the other quite considerably, most apparent in the latter stages of the game. To that end, I found beating the game to be extremely underwhelming, just as I realized I didn't care about what had happened in the end. If you ask me, that is the worst impression a game could leave on a player, a state of some kind of a phlegmatic limbo, a vapid disconnectedness. Which is really a shame, it's amost as if the game was rushed to be out on the shelves on time, I couldn't tell.
Anyway, the game's free thanks to the awesome people behind it and the sequel that got completed a few years back, so there's just no two ways about that. Bravo! You should grab it and boot it up, especially if you're a fan of the genre.

I don't know that free game could be this great.
Это конечно классический квест, но всё таки по механикам безнадёжно устарел. Обклика1 весь экран. Собери всё, что накликал в пиксельной каше. А теперь выбирай в инвентаре всё накликанное и перекликивай всё на экране. Пиксельхант в худшем своём проявлении. И всё ОЧЕНЬ НЕТОРОПЛИВО. Ничего не имею против классических квестов, но лучше когда такие квесты более-менее современные.
I played this game as a teenager many years ago when it first came out. I remember buying it with the many floppy disks (15) I think for the Amiga... Loved the game then and still love it now. When I saw it was free on Steam i just had to go down memory lane again...
Only Tip I'd give to save you many many hours is to look online for the walkthroughs. I spent hundreds of hours originally to complete the game and even with the walkthrough it still takes a good few hours to complete.

Beneath a Steel Sky is an absolute classic that was first published in 1994, 30 years ago. I played it for the first time a few years after it came out, and replayed it a couple of times since. It is amazing to me how well it holds up. It has a great story, interesting characters, and fantastic (and sometimes very difficult) puzzles.
There are a few things that are standard in point & click adventures now that weren't present back then, eg there is no hotspot finder, no hint system, and due to the graphics limitations of the time, there is a bit of pixel hunting required. There's also no running or fast travel, so if you have to backtrack, it can take a while. But I found that I was using the time to think about other possible options on what to try next, so it didn't really bother me.
One thing that is definitely different now is that there is no autosave whatsoever, and you can die, so make sure to save frequently (F5 opens the menu).
All in all, BaSS felt surprisingly modern. Left click gives you a description of what you are looking at, right click tries to interact with it. The inventory appears when you move your mouse to the top of the screen, and space lets you skip dialogue. The voice acting is superb, and with the exception of one crash, and a line of dialogue that didn't disappear in one scene it ran flawlessly.
There's a sequel (Beyond a Steel Sky) that came out a few years ago, and is also great, if you like this one.
