Personally, I didn't like the game, because it's harder than it needs to be. But I have to rate this game positively for the reasons:
1. Game graphics, while simple, is surprisingly charming and does not hurt eyes at all, even though it's fast paced;
2. Soundtrack is cool;
3. Main tag of the game is "difficult"/hardcore;
4. You'll realize whether you like this game or not within first 2 minutes of playing, so you'll be eligible for refund if you paid money for it, but also
5. This game is cheap anyways, goes on a sale very often, but most importantly,
6. Lots of people, including me, got this game from free Steam Store giveaway years ago.

Super fast avoid-'em-up is a pretty apt description. The gameplay is pretty simple, and the game delivers on being a fast flashy dodge the obstacles style game. However, there were a number of small annoyances that personally made the game unenjoyable for myself.
In no particular order, the game seems to begin to speed up / drop frames after just a couple runs meaning I had to restart the game every couple runs. It would feel reasonably playable, but would rapidly become ... not unplayable, but extremely unfair feeling. I would go from averaging like 15-20 second times to getting 45-55 second times consistently after a restart.
The random level generation, while it makes the game feel less repetitive, also results in the game generating some very unfair level layouts.
Shooting enemies isn't immediate, rather you launch a missle that tracks onto an enemy. This means that even if you shoot, the enemy won't immediately die, but instead could take upwards of three seconds. This makes the fact that they can continue lock on and shoot you while your missles are just drawing doodles in the air very annoying.
The camera will do it's best to put special lanes into view, but at the cost of obscuring what is infront of you. Your view also gets blocked by the obstacles, which again with the level generation can hide obstacles in the nearby lanes so you have even less time to react when you steer into them, sometimes to an impossible degree.
The speed variances while cinematic, can really mess with your input timings. Seeing a barrier in a nearby lane coming up, you want to time your lane shift to be right after it, but oh wait, your missle finally collided with that enemy, so the game slowed down to show you that, now that half second delay before steering wasn't enough and you steer too early crashing. Normaly even I would feel like this is a nit pick, but in a game where you are dodging multiple times a second over and over, the game randomly slowing and speeding up feels extremely unfair.
All that said, the game looks nice, has nice colours, runs fast and manages to remain relatively clear and smooth (at least after a fresh restart for me.) The gameplay is enjoyable, until you start dying over and over to what feels like the game being unfair, rather than a skill issue. But who knows, maybe I am just bad at the game, and these kinds of games just aren't for me -_o_-

Если бы для эпилептиков придумали пытку… Да её и придумывать не надо – достаточно запустить его в эту игру на первый уровень и он отдаст вам душу, лишь больше это не повторялось. Спасибо, что хоть предупреждение в заставке оставили.
В чем суть этой «игры» - задушить семь уровней, продержавшись на сверхсветовой трассе как минимум 30 секунд (60 для закрытия на ачивку), не вбубенившись при этом в постоянно мелькающие стены. С каждым последующим уровнем повышается сложность, путем ввода новых игровых правил.
НО КАКОЙ РЕАКЦИЕЙ надо обладать, чтобы осилить эти 60 секунд – тут даже мангусты в ах*е. А уж от трясущейся из стороны в сторону камеры мой организм испытал такую перегрузку, что и пилоты рядом не стояли.
Игровое правило, которое заставляет повернуть в сторону с линии в соседнюю, чтобы в моменте намотаться на бл*дскую стену, как боевая жига на бетонный столб – вызывает неудержимый приступ сломать кого-то. Например, того, кто это придумал.
Если же вы являетесь обладателем высококонтрастного монитора – после нескольких часов игры все, что вы будете столько же времени видеть перед глазами – цветастый калейдоскоп, который даже любители галлюциногенных грибов на ковре-телевизоре никогда не увидят.
А уж отсутствие такой базовой вещи, как [b][i]курсора в главном меню[/i][/b], вызывает крайнюю степень недоумения.
Если вам кажется, что эту игру можно лутать ради легких ачивочек – вам показалось, лучше смело скипнуть. Ради карточек – ещё куда ни шло.
Но чтобы играть в это на полном серьезе – я даже не знаю, кем надо быть… космонавтом?

The power of good advertising should not be understated, as every time I glance at the cover image of BARRIER X (BX), I think that it's going to be attached with a good game. Seeing somebody holding onto a controller, looking as if they're having a blast, gets me into gamer mode, ready to get blown away by an experience I can hardly handle. In that sense, it's rather accurate, but not in the 90's way that makes people nostalgic for that decade.
[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
All you're expected to do in BX is survive long enough to either unlock the next level or beat the current one. Doing so involves reacting appropriately to what color of light your ship is on. For example, if it's red, you need to move out of the way before you run into a solid wall and die. Blue lanes display an arrow that'll point left or right, and in order to maintain control over the ship, you have to match the direction shown. Otherwise, you'll be momentarily blocked from dodging out of the way, and have to do another input in order to regain control. From level four onward, you'll also have to contend with enemies. By the way, there's only seven levels in the game.
Unfortunately, I can't even pretend that this is a good idea for a game. Having so few stages, minimal requirements for progressing to the next, and such a low barrier for beating the current one, only has two possibilities. Either these will be incredibly difficult, likely in rather cheap and frustrating ways, or people will finish it in no time flat. Considering I haven't beaten the game, you can figure out which of the two the developers went for in this case. With the nature of this title, it's one I could grind until I eventually beat them all, but there's no pleasure from this experience. Even on the first stage, the lights and sense of momentum don't make for an enjoyable game, but is merely something to endure. As someone who doesn't moderate Discord servers, I have better things to do with my time.

Because this game emphasizes dodging out of the way of incoming hazards, the primary importance with your controls is being able to dart left and right quickly enough. As long as your set-up has responsive enough inputs, this game should function properly with them. When I'd fail, it was either because my controls didn't allow me to input repeated movements fast enough, or because of visual distractions, not because there was problems with lag.

BX plays like an arcade title, with no explanation for what's taking place. Because the gameplay is rather straightforward, there'd be very little to work with to create any story points, so this makes sense to me.

Aside from the minimal gameplay, this has to be the other crippling problem with the release. Any game that has to warn against those with epilepsy needs to reconsider its visuals, as such effects often aren't well beloved by gamers who don't suffer from that condition. The choice of colors, their saturation levels, and how they contrast and rapidly change on the screen makes for an effect that's unpleasant. Gamers really don't want to have their playtime disrupted because their eyes are getting blasted by a title that doesn't care how much it harms their vision. Another annoyance is that as you move from one lane to the next, the screen angles to reflect how you've zipped from place to place. For me, it's surprisingly distracting, as it'd be better for me to keep my eyes on the ground, so I can best see all the lanes next to me, and whether I should go one way or the other. This seems like a deliberate choice to mess with the player, and drag out the time needed to advance.
[h1]Sound Design[/h1]
Personally, I find the title or main menu music annoying, as it's so repetitive. Plus, as you navigate around stages, or are in-between attempts, the music keeps starting and stopping. I've no idea why the developers didn't have the stage music play on a loop constantly, whether you failed or otherwise, until you backed out and returned to the stage select screen. During the speed-up portions of each stage, the music is momentarily distorted, which just acts as another distraction, as the audio changing makes it harder to focus solely on the things you need to dodge. For me, the audio is more of a hindrance than benefit to this title.

🔍 Whatever system of controls you use, make sure they're snappy and responsive enough to make several movements left or right. Often, I'd fail because I couldn't make enough inputs in a row to get out of the way.
🔍 You'll never coast in a safe, plain lane for any amount of time. Be prepared to dart left or right promptly after moving into one.
[h1]Final Thoughts[/h1]
If I was being more charitable, perhaps I could view the premise with an open attitude, considering a game with only a few challenging levels as something worthwhile. However, even if that were the case, there's still the problem of execution, and I'd definitely still have problems with how the visuals are presented. At this point, I'm always baffled when a game would rather present a warning for people who might suffer from epilepsy, than take out such content. Is screen-shaking, flickering lights, and other obnoxious effects really instrumental to the experience, and if so, why is that a good thing? Others have expressed a fondness for what BX provides, but I'm not convinced, and don't recommend the game.

BARRIER X can be a test and improve your reflexes game for all I care. This game composes of speed, and more speed to react and respond to the numerous obstacles and enemies being thrown at you on the endless road. As a 3rd person runner, you are hit with bright and often blinding graphics, and retro arcade audio that's changing as you progress through the levels. Each level has its own theme of colour and gradients, BGM as well as increase in speed difficulty. There's a timer to see how far you progress, and it only requires simple left/right controls and shooting enemies down.
It's such a simple concept, yet difficult to execute especially as you reach towards the last few levels.
I'm not sure why this game is tagged as casual, as it's certainly not for the faint of heart. Though I've (somehow) managed to achieve all the achievements, I doubt I will ever complete the final stage again, as I had back in 2017. BARRIER X is definitely for the more competitive gamers out there.

The steam description does not lie, the game is fast and throws challenging mechanics at you with each new level; for example one stage will introduce near mandatory lanes that punish you if missed while another stage will introduce an AI combatant that you're required to destroy before it kills you. The mechanics can be mastered and beaten but the amount of visual clutter is overwhelming, regardless if you get into a flow state the game is incredibly addicting.
Barrier X is chaotic & not for those prone to sensory overload, It riddles you with effects & distorts time when you’re in a flow state; seconds feel like less and it’s easy to lose a chunk of time trying to improve your records. If you're into high speed endless runners or rhythm games you'll more than likely enjoy Barrier X & its challenges but if you want a chill runner, I don’t think it’s for you.
If you do end up purchasing & playing the title, I recommend your own music playlist over the in-game soundtrack. I found [i]Bury the Light by Casey Edwards & Victor Borba[/i] and [i]Cult of Personality by Living Colour[/i] fit the gameplay flow perfectly.
[i]Personal note:[/i] I was curious to see how I reacted to the stimulation and quick thinking the game oozes, so I recorded a five minute run where I died & beat my record numerous times; It was fascinating watching my pupils dilate, face flash with various colours and my microsecond reaction before starting another run after swift failure.

I played this game back in 2016 (this review is being written in 2025) around the time it came out on mobile. I absolutely loved the game, but I forgot about it after I lost the old phone. Today, due to some stroke of luck and a little help from ChatGPT I was able to find this game again. And even today, the game has no ads, nothing to waste your time, and is still well optimized. Really love the game. I have 1000+ hours on a few games but THIS IS THE FIRST REVIEW I AM WRITING ON STEAM FOR A GAME.

A very simple ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fast and addictive game. Warning! It´s so fast it´s a seizure test. If you can play this for lets say... 30 minutes without having a seizure you´re good.

If this is done correctly this might fix the crashing it seems to have done it for me needed the fix for another game i was trying to play.

3) Постепенное ускорение времени при рестарте уровня;
4) Замедление времени при достижении рубежа ускорения или уничтожения противника блокирует управление.
Лучше сберегите свои глаза от этой какофонии цветов и потратьте деньги с пользой на пиво

A simple yet well made game that you can jump into from time to time, when you want that thrill of dodging things by the skin of your teeth. The sound design adds to the intensity with booming thuds and crashes that startle you every time you fail to avoid an obstacle.
However, I must admit, this game isn't for everyone. If you are someone who is easily frustrated with trying the stages over and over due to how fast stuff comes at you, then you best avoid this title. Another thing I disliked was how often my inputs would not register when the stage would speed up and a barrier had appeared before me, causing me to crash. I dealt with this by preparing to be in a relatively safer lane before a speed up (the speed ups happen at particular intervals, so you have some time to be ready) so it wasn't that big of an issue, but just thought I would point that out. Lastly, I wasn't a big fan of the low number of soundtracks in the game. They are good soundtracks, don't get me wrong but it starts to get grating after hearing the few tracks for the 100th time.
Overall, I think this is a fun game to pick up if you are someone who likes reflex based challenges, it kind of reminded me of flash games like the 'Run' series.

Ignore the intense amount of hours... The game feels very much like it's designed to induce rage, and it certainly succeeds there. But it fails in most other ways. Perhaps there's a niche of players that will really enjoy this, and another group that won't quite like it. It may be difficult to have anyone fit in between. But, I will say the game tends to be on sale at times, and it's not truly awful.

Barrier X es una de esas maravillosas experiencias que llegan, cumplen su función y luego dejan espacio para el siguiente divertimento. O quizá no; siempre puedes volver y seguir jugando, que el juego es adictivo e invita a otra partida. Pero es más que pura velocidad sin cerebro. Es una serie de decisiones acertadas en el diseño de cada una de las formas, del movimiento frenético de la cámara, de las líneas y sus tonos claramente distintivos. Es una música que no llama demasiado la atención pero que te acompaña en el camino y acaba instalándose en tu cerebro. Es la sensación de pasar de cero a cien en medio segundo, como si destilasen la energía. Jamás culpas a Barrier X de tus derrotas, y eso es señal de que está haciendo algo bien. Lo único que preocupa es seguir, esquivar, sentir que estás en una carrera a toda velocidad, inmerso en aquella autopista del hiperespacio, lejos de todas partes. Es compacto, tremendo y apasionado. Me recuerda a la publicidad de los años 90, sus colores y flashes, y a esa palabra que ahora suena tan estúpida: "radical". Pero define a Barrier X. Es radical hasta el infinito.
Great music but you gotta have fast fingers for this. Still trying to get past level 1.
Buen juego, solo falta dedor
Gets progressively worse with each level. First level you just have to dodge the red lines, fine. Then you also have to follow blue arrows, which are sometimes contradictory with dodging the red lines. Then you also have green arrows, which you are NOT supposed to avoid. And then they add enemies you have to shoot. By level 4 you basically have to react to 4 different and often contradictory inputs in a fraction of a second or you instantly lose the level. I played this for less than 20 minutes and actually got nauseous from this ♥♥♥♥. It's not fun, it's not fair (there's a lot of luck involved with whether or not the arrows lead you into the next barrier) and it's complete sensory overload for no good reason. 0/10, one of the worst games I have ever played.
The game is actually very fun, it's a nice challenge. Just remember to look at the floor tiles cuz they show where the barricades will hit

・他の方のレビューにもあるが、スローモーションエフェクトのせいで避けるタイミングがずれることがある(これのせいで死ぬとかなりストレスが溜まります)
・中盤のステージからいくつかギミックが登場するが、常時ボタンを連打し続けることで対処できてしまうため、ほとんど意味を成していない
・上の理由から、後半のステージの差があまり感じられず、退屈である
もし反射神経ゲーを求めて買おうと思っているのであれば、Super Hexagonなどのゲームを買うことをおすすめします。

Saw this game on Steam, decided to try it. Game gets to the seizure warning screen and crashes to desktop every time on my Windows 11 PC.
Do not buy this game, as it most likely will crash on launch.
