Army Men: Toys in Space, developed by The 3DO Company and published by 2K, represents one of the more experimental chapters in the long-running Army Men franchise. Released at the tail end of the 1990s and later made available digitally, the game departs from the series’ traditional backyard warzones and pushes its plastic soldiers into a full-blown science fiction conflict. While it retains the franchise’s toy-themed identity and isometric action-strategy gameplay, it layers on alien invasions, spacefaring allies, and a more elaborate narrative structure, resulting in an experience that is both ambitious and uneven.
The story shifts focus away from the familiar Green versus Tan rivalry and introduces extraterrestrial forces into the mix. A crashed alien spacecraft sparks an unlikely alliance between the Tan army and mysterious invaders, escalating the conflict beyond typical toy-soldier skirmishes. Players once again take control of Sarge, the series’ iconic Green Army protagonist, who must now confront not only his longtime plastic adversaries but also advanced alien enemies wielding unfamiliar technology. Along the way, Sarge receives support from the Galactic Army and its commander, Tina Tomorrow, blending pulp sci-fi tropes with the series’ tongue-in-cheek military tone.
Gameplay unfolds from an isometric perspective that combines direct character control with light tactical oversight. Players guide Sarge across varied environments, issuing commands to squadmates while engaging enemies in real-time combat. The control scheme allows for weapon switching, item usage, and limited strategic positioning, though the focus remains firmly on action rather than deep strategy. Compared to earlier entries, Toys in Space expands its arsenal with futuristic weapons, power-ups, and special abilities such as temporary shields and speed boosts. These additions introduce variety into combat encounters, even if the core mechanics remain relatively straightforward.
Mission design attempts to broaden the formula beyond simple elimination objectives. Players undertake escort missions, base defenses, rescue operations, and offensive assaults across diverse settings that range from suburban household environments to alien landscapes and space stations. This environmental variety reinforces the game’s whimsical concept of toy soldiers fighting across everyday spaces and beyond. However, while the objectives diversify the pacing, execution can be inconsistent. Allied AI behavior is frequently unreliable, requiring constant supervision to prevent squadmates from wandering into danger or becoming stuck on terrain.
Visually, the game reflects late-1990s PC design sensibilities. Character models are simple, textures are flat, and environmental detail is modest by modern standards. Yet there is a nostalgic charm in its plastic-soldier aesthetic, with exaggerated proportions and bright coloration maintaining the series’ playful tone. Alien enemies introduce new visual diversity, featuring distinct silhouettes and animated effects that contrast with the more grounded Green and Tan troops. While technical fidelity is dated, the art direction succeeds in preserving the toy-themed identity that defines the franchise.
Sound design complements the campy narrative. Weapon effects and explosions carry a distinct, slightly exaggerated tone befitting plastic warfare, while voice acting leans into melodramatic sci-fi stylings. Dialogue exchanges between characters often embrace light humor, preventing the alien invasion premise from feeling overly serious. The soundtrack, though not especially memorable, supports the action without distracting from gameplay.
Reception over time has been mixed, largely due to the tension between ambition and polish. Many players appreciate the imaginative shift into science fiction and the expanded variety of enemies and missions. Others highlight frustrations with pathfinding, inconsistent AI performance, and repetitive combat scenarios. The balance between direct action and tactical oversight can feel clunky, particularly during missions that demand precise coordination among multiple units.
Despite these shortcomings, Army Men: Toys in Space holds a unique position within the series. Its willingness to experiment with setting and narrative scale distinguishes it from more formulaic installments. By integrating alien factions and galactic allies, it broadens the scope of what a toy soldier conflict can entail, even if the underlying mechanics remain rooted in the franchise’s established structure.
Ultimately, Army Men: Toys in Space is best approached as a product of its era—an ambitious late-90s action-strategy hybrid that values creativity over refinement. For longtime fans of the Army Men franchise or players with nostalgia for classic PC titles, it offers an entertaining and occasionally chaotic journey through plastic warfare in outer space. While its dated mechanics and uneven AI may limit its appeal to modern audiences, its bold thematic shift and enduring toy-soldier charm ensure that it remains a memorable, if imperfect, entry in the series.
Rating: 6/10
Waiting new army men series:
1. Army men air tactic
2. Army men world war
Just like all the other Army Men games on Steam, this one doesn't actually work - though it worked for longer. Keyboard movement doesn't work, mouse quits working after about 8 minutes of play, and graphics are screwy in a big way (even allowing for 20-year old programming). Had to refund every single one of these games and that's a damn shame.
I like Army men toys in space still one of my favourite games
Yes.
Erf, I mean it's alright. Controls are very tanky.

Stupid game that I enjoyed as a kid and wanted to play for nostalgia reasons. Unfortunately, the controls are broken with this version of the game (specifically the mouse freezing), as others have also reported. :(
Mouse controls are broken, they lock up and freeze and it completely breaks how you would play the game, its almost impossible, like playing with a blindfold and a banana as a controller
Great little Army Men game! All or at least most of the content seems to be present. Bigger battles and better variety of units compared to the second game. This one is the most challenging in the series. A crunchy classic well worth your time. Give it a try!
Just Mindless Fun
Absolutely wacky, and has no means being as fun and nostalgic as it should be. A great blend of top down shooter and strategy that has yet to be replicated. Quite a challenging game, and maybe its the nostalgia for me, but great fun. The terrain destruction is a real standout and a great level of detail for the time. Give it a go battling tans and ants on a picnic table to see what I mean.
The greatest classic that i played when i was little, now able to relive the times playing this. highly recommended.

Pure nostalgia, super fun honestly and fantastic!
No support. Filled with crashes. Avoid like the plague.
My generation will never give this a try, but I really found this game nice. It could be really fun if it had multiplayer. It's cheap and, system requirements are low, and I recommend it as an ideal game for oldschool players like me.
Great game. sadly that 3do dont have army men air tactics
People Seem to dislike it but once i got used to controls and realized i can move by holding down right mouse which fixes a lot of the control issue the game became really enjoyable. PS. play on easy
Swag Money
I really wanted to enjoy it but I can't.
The movement is overall fine, it is the mouse that is the problem.
For whatever reason the mouse will just lock up and not let you look around and it happened so often I couldnt even get 20 mins into the game without just being so annoyed with it and quitting.
Every time it would lock up the only way I can reset or continue looking around the map was shooting and then I'd get a second of looking before it locked up again.
8/10
Tried to run the game, crashed my pc and was unable to play the game. Besides that, great nostalgia!
Just bought it for pure nostalgia. 20 some years ago I was a little kid playing this game all day everday having tons of fun, still 20 years later I love it. The entire game is seriously underrated due to the creativity of everything in the game itself. The game is somewhat on the difficult side after starting back up 20 years later, though I am just happy to relive a few old memories.
Bonecos de ação e ALIENS!!!
Sweet yesterday once more
this game is the WORST in the army men series
Best Army Men and one i'm familiar with the most since i grew up with this version. Same gameplay as Army Men II but the controls are much better where you can select an entire group and run with Mouse 2 which locks the camera on your character making combat much more better but you can still play the point and click style if it's your preference. It's basically Army Toys mixed with Aliens so you'll have all the usual Army Men characters with unique Aliens such as ones that have a freeze ray, flame mortar, chaingun and also alien themed vehicles which is a nice change from the usual military army style. It's also satisfying to burn ants with the flamethrower troops aswell as smack them with the fly swatter because they are the only enemy in the game with a weird hitbox so just burn them ASAP, nasty ones.
This version does not have multiplayer but it does have Skirmish which has alot of maps to choose from so that aswell as the campaign is enough to have fun with.

A great game for nostalgia.
unlike army men 2, this was NOWHERE close to good as i remember, even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ majoras mask wasnt as hard for plyers who finished oot.
i still have a crush on tina tomorrow though
Refunded once. Dunno why I bought this again. Might bc I'm a actual masochist to get more torture out my life.
A real one that needs a remaster but the corps don't a ♥♥♥♥ about it.
Great Game, Always loved these as a Kid.
Waaay harder then i remember as a kid but just as fun!
When I was but a child, when all my peers had a console, I had a tower with XP, and this collection of Army Men games from 3DO. Before I had friends, these little green chumps filled that spot. These games are classic gems to another time. No matter how far we go with tech and the gaming world, I'll always come back to this, time and time again.
I enjoyed army men quite a bit, though, my biggest pet peeve was that in sandbox mode, theres a limit to how many troops you command. The old version didn't have limits. Just absurd numbers. Still good though

Fair
I Love the Army Men franchise. However this game is so atrocious compared to any other army men game. It tries to mix a RTS with isometric shooter. How is this different than other Army Men games? Everything. Movement control is horrid when it does work. Looks like you can move past an obsticle? nope, you got stuck on who knows what. Different commands for units to use, sure, but completely worthless unless set on def or atk. What about the different guns and abilities you can pick up? Most everything is worthless except grenades for close encounters and mortars for far. everything else is trash. OH they give you all these men to control and use and stratagize with.....and they're gone.....from 1 grenade. Then there is the saving functionality, it all seems well and good, untill you move to the next level, AND YOU HAVE NO MORE ROOM TO SAVE FILES, MAKING YOU RESTART ON THE PREVIOUS LEVEL THAT WAS YOUR LAST SAVE. And that is with using the games saves and overwriting only those. If you love Army Men, dont get this game. It is a horrible experience. Army Men 1 is leagues better than this trash.
All right, this game is going to be a tough review in 2020 but I loved this game as a kid so here you go:
The basic gist of it is that there's a lot of depth and fun to be had here; you could easily reskin this software and sell it as a hardcore tactical action/RTS hybrid game. However, the game was obviously made in the 90s and the controls are extremely clunky. You will need a few hours to become the least bit competent but the game does at least provide a decent enough tutorial to get you started. Unless you bought the three-pack and bothered to try Army Men 1 & 2, you don't even know how lucky you are to have cursor-based movement at all. As stubborn as it is, just imagine having to play this game with WASD like high-level players.
If you own Running With Rifles and have never played this game before, you can go ahead and skip right over this because this game pretty much controls like that, only far worse and with the added ability of directing entire squads at your leisure, rather than one constantly-dying nobody. But something is lost in the modern era; if you do that, you will be losing all the charm of toasting your enemies with giant aerosol can flamethrowers, and playing quaint little skirmishes and deathmatches with the plentiful multiplayer maps and modes to be found here, and flipping a Jeep over a rubber duck and getting little bits of your plastic @ss scattered into a giant bath tub by enemy shrapnel.
This game functions well on paper and gives you more tactical options twenty years ago than Running With Rifles does today: Form and direct custom squads with quick and easy control group mechanics, use a wider way of weapons with mortars, flamethrowers, mines, gun emplacements, powerups both instant and stashable, as well as three semi-permanent upgrades to your rifle, and enjoy greater freedom of movement with the ability to roll while kneeling and prone, and fire most light weapons on the move.
The problem is all those features need buttons to activate them, and you would do well to spend your first few minutes with the game overviewing the controls and tweaking the hotkeys to your preference. I'm not sure if newer generations have the patience for a learning curve like this without the latest graphics and smooth enough controls, but enjoy this game and prove me wrong for six bucks, or whatever the sale price is.
OLD TIME CLASSIC!!!!!!!
controls are confusing and a pain in the ass to use. they should have left it the way Army men 2 was. at least the controls for that game was easy and made the game fun. i do not know why this game has a battle mode and army men 2 does not have it.
so if you want to get stuck on a level for an hour dying left and right and have difficulties working the controls for the game go ahead and waist your money on this game.
BGM: This Modern Love
“...But I never want it to end.”

"WHO are you?"
"I am Tina. Tina Tomorrow."
➤ III. "Your move."
+ 提高了敌人的伤害和血量,又取消了我方普通士兵升级变强的机制,使得消灭单兵都需要谨慎计划;
+ 在某些关卡中,持续派来的追兵和轰炸机,大大增强了压迫感,迫使玩家保持移动;

gg old game!
Best childhood game today... but this version for some reason harder and more buggy than older version
other than that, it's good
A very nice game with toy army :) ..but this time in space :D ...is very nice and cool game from this franchise as it is a bit different from others but still fun and nice to play...have fun and enjoy !!
Classic.
This game is horrendous.
Though it has a kind of interesting premise, the whole game is ruined by some of the worst controls i have ever seen in 25 years of playing video games.
Stay away. Otherwise you'll regret it.
EDIT: This is also true for Army Men I & II. Army Men II however is slightly less awful than Army Men I and Toys in Space, since it is much shorter than the other two so you can go back to playing good games much sooner.
Those games really COULD be fun, if they just had a proper modern control scheme.

ARMY MEN TOYS IN SPACE
Genre: Casual Action
Release: Q3 1999
( ) 0/8 Simply one of the worst games ever made. Don't waste any money on this.

Not a perfect game by any means, but still a fun little game to kill some time.
Quirky little game from long time ago. 10/10 would alien girl again
Game crashes all the time, I do remember playing this game when I was 8 though they really should make a remake of it.
Grew up living on the computer playing all these army men games between mowing the lawn and playing with actual plastic army men. I remember Toys In Space being impossibly difficult, and it still is. This is probably the most difficult game in the entire Army Men franchise. Glad it's on Steam, for the price you can't complain. Time to get World War and Air Tactics too on to Steam too!!!!!!!
broken buggy mess dont buy
its sad i have wanted to play this game forever but this version is just crap
★ ★ ★ ★ -
I now know where my slight interest and appreciation for classical orchestra music came from lol
K of course i suggest this game for a fun little 2D over head shooter and the start of the Army Men franchise which lasted through the beginning of PC as a strategy builder like star craft with the 2D shooter, and a few consoles when it changed to more of a 3rd person shoulder shooter, and its cheap so its worth seeing if it will run for you if you played it before.
+General+
this was the last of the beginning games that are overhead 2d shooters, but also was the 1st one where they finally got the controls down perfect, so you can use the w,s,a,d to move sarge but also the mouse to move or click to shoot in that direction while using the buttons to run and dive, using 1-6 will now select the item in your inventory and you can set F1-F6 to auto select a group of soldiers you group together, and they seemed to have left the Battle Mode / offline / LAN multiplayer in this one! not sure why they took it out of Army Men 2 (-_-)
you can also right click and drag across the screen to highlight a few soldiers or all of them to move together, or the R G T buttons rally them to you or you can select a couple soldiers and hit defend button to tell them to stay somewhere while you move on, so the ability to divide your force now is great, also you can just pick 1 of the other soldiers to play as just like Sarge but the aliens cant dive or roll etc. so you can divide your force and organize them to toggle between using which guys.
but one of the biggest benefits of Toys in Space is you can use items on your other soldiers, so if you select the medic item in your inventory and press Space you will use it on Sarge, but you can also just move the mouse over to the picture of the soldier in your group and heal them, and you can see their stats by selecting them on the field and checking the right panel, also dont forget to put your team into your vehicles like tanks, boats, jeeps etc. or you can even put them in a tank to defend the area while Sarge runs off to do other stuff, so now think of all the other green soldiers as Sarges' to a shorter degree of ability.
the bad thing about these games is the objective isnt always clear, so you may spend time walking around looking at stuff to see if you can do something with it, so make sure to use your objectives menu / map and you can scroll around the map by clicking on it in the top right panel, if you have to run a long distance and you know there isnt any enemies in that area you can just move the screen to that part of the map and click, then wait for sarge to run up to that area, then click on his pic on the left again to go back to his fixed screen and R to re-rally your teammates or just highlight them.

this game is super old tho as well so it doesnt run great, i havent had many issues with the controls or actually playing like some users mention, but just keep in mind its an old 640x480 game upscaled so Do Not Windows Out, lol it doesnt like it and you will be Ctrl Alt Deleting your way out
also be ready for loud cutscenes like old games like to cuz the audio control doesnt effect videos etc. so instead of using the in-game volume settings, leave them maxed or adjusted for the right SFX to music and other sounds, then open the Windows Volume Mixer and lower the sound level of this games application input, which will make all sounds coming from the game the same lower level so no more blowing your ears off in cutscenes.
although im guessing this wont be a problem for most users cuz the only ones that may wanna buy it are ppl that played it before as kids lol, i dont see many kids that grew up with the ps2 and on their whole lives wanting to play this.
This game does not work. I had read other people saying it has issues with newer computers but thought I might not have them. I had them much worse.
I only got to be at the main menu for a few seconds, noticing the terrible mouse input others have noted, before I tabbed out to pause my music since the game broke my pause/play key. Tabbing out instantly broke my entire computer, causing it to do nothing but constantly flash between pure black and pure white extremely quickly. After spending about 10 minutes trying everything to stop this, including turning off the computer, I had eventually just decided to hold the power button.
I have no idea how a product like this is even allowed on the platform, it acted worse than any virus I've ever had.
10/10 my childhood
Its a good game. But the cheat codes do not work for campaign mode, Map 5 mission 1 isn't funtioning. It keeps shelling out to my windows screen everytime. I load the game from my saved games. it says: It had an tech error. Easy feels more like medium or hard difficulty level. But its a lot of fun to play. I played for about after 9 hours. The game stopped working.
People complaining about difficulity how hard this game is. Wake up ppl this is not some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ serial produced cheap crap. If you can't beat a nearly 20 years old game, go play call of duty, fortnite or pubg where is no challenge at all.
Yes this game is a bit challenging, you have to use your brain to work out strategies to complete a level.
If you know this game is hard, why do you even buy it? This is a classic game you should know if you purchase.
Great Game.
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. Tina Tomorrow <3
BUT I can't recommend this version of the game, as the controls don't function. Seems the rest of the Army Men games work well enough on steam, but this one does not yet.
Classic Army Men game with a strange twist.
The first thing I had noticed with this title is that compared to the previous releases the difficulty here had increased a bit but does not take away from the fun; you will not be cruising through these missions.
The controls here feel dated but not obsolete and can be played.
Graphically aged.
Sound engine is okay.
Storyline seems slightly lacking in the sense you are just dropped in with not too much storytelling giving you an idea what you're really doing here and why you're fighting other than the age old fact that the Tan are involved.
This plays well on modern machines with modern OS's.
Get this game only on sale.
Doesn't work on my system. Mouse is unusable (i7 8700k, GTX 1080, 16 GB DDR4, Windows 10). I love this game and used to play it as a kid but cannot recommend it until it is fixed, if ever.
The greatest classic that i played when i was little, now able to relive the times playing this. highly recommended.
Spent too much time on this when I was a kid. The campaign mode requires skill. Battle mode is fun to just kill bots and explore. The big downer is no multiplayer... it would seem easy to integrate too. I fixed the mouse bug by dropping to 400 dpi and 250 polling rate in my Logitech Gaming Software. I think polling rate is the important bit. No other issues so far.
People whining the weapons are underpowered and the enemies are too powerful. Get gud.
Nostalgia overload. Great port.
pretty cool old classic game but this version has a critical bug
1. mouse doesn't work smoothly every time while play game
2. when you playing this game sometimes escape to window
and flickering forever
Remember play this game as a kid loved every min of it highly recommend!! bring more Army men titles !!!!!
Quick Summary:
- Playable with windows 10. (But there's still a chance that it will not work for some people)
- Gameplay is like Army Men 2, with some adjustment both better and worse.
- This one has offline battle mode.
- The enemies in the campaign are harder to kill than previous game even in easy difficulty which makes the campaign harder and more frustrating.
I played this game when I was young which was about 15 years ago. I finished the game using cheat codes because I was bad at the game. Now I've just finished the game (with easy difficulty), the review will be based on my present view.
Comparing to Army Men 2
Gameplay
Pros:
- Good graphics.
- More unit types. (mortar man, Alien faction, Space men faction).
- Offline battle (with bots).
- Different control scheme (depends on one's preference)
> to stand fire, just left click (no need for holding shift)
> right click to order move/attack
- You can control any unit in your squad individually. (mortar man is OP!!)
- New squad system, you can assign your units to different squads.
- Bigger battles with more unit under your command.
Cons:
- Enemies are hard to kill, even in easy mode.
> enemy infantry will usually go prone and roll around when under fire with makes them difficult to hit (proning is OP in this game).
> enemy somehow take less damage from weapons. For example, even I use flamethrower on a rifle man, it takes long time before I can kill him (takes about 10-20 ammo!).
> weapons have been nerfed. (ie. it takes 4-5 mortar to kill a tank, 10-20 flamethrow ammo to kill a guy, loads of rifle ammo to kill a guy, 1 air strike cannot kill a tank, etc.)
> eventually, it takes time to adapt to the new weapons/game balance.
- AI is bad and annoying. This also causes some missions to be more difficult since some missions are big battles that you cannot win using only Sarge.
> Path finding is terrible. If you order a guy to move to another position far away, he may get stuck, take a long way, go to different locations. This forces you to micro manage or move the guy there yourself.
> friendly AI is bad (especially, space men units). Sometimes they don't shoot the enemy even they are in front of you (with defense or stand fire command). It takes time to learn the AI behavior to command your units effectively.
The Army Men games were some of the first games I ever played as a little kid. Happy to see that they have FINALLY been added to steam.
Gameplay wise, it's obviously older then most of you reading this, so yeah, it's not "ultra pretty real life OMG graphics"
Still a fun game in a series of awesome games ( Except maybe Sarges Heros )
Buy this for the nostalgia.
Army Men I and II are my favorite games. But I don't like this one.
The sense of control is badly. Sarge is too weak, enemies are too strong. You can't kill a single soldier with your rifle in a short time. But he can kill you very quickly.
