A amazing game and in my opinion the best in the army men series. Just the right amount of difficulty and oozes charm. Great for any kid or adult.
Army Men II builds upon the foundation of the original game by expanding both the scope of its world and the ambition of its design, delivering a top-down action-strategy hybrid that leans heavily into the playful absurdity of plastic warfare. Developed by The 3DO Company, the game places players once again in control of Sarge, the determined Green Army soldier locked in an ongoing conflict against the Tan forces. What distinguishes this sequel is its willingness to push beyond simple backyard skirmishes, introducing a narrative built around interdimensional portals that link the plastic world to human environments. This premise allows the campaign to unfold across a wide variety of imaginative settings, from kitchen countertops and bathtubs to sandy beaches and eerie laboratories, giving the game a constant sense of novelty as it shifts between scales and themes.
Rather than functioning as a traditional base-building real-time strategy title, Army Men II emphasizes direct control and tactical action. Players guide Sarge and small squads through mission-based objectives that focus on combat, exploration, and situational problem-solving. The gameplay centers on maneuvering through hostile territory, eliminating enemy patrols, securing key points, and completing specific tasks such as destroying installations or rescuing allies. The absence of resource gathering and large-scale army management gives the experience a more intimate feel compared to broader RTS games, but it also demands precision and awareness. Positioning, line of sight, and weapon selection matter greatly, especially when enemy forces begin to swarm or when environmental hazards complicate movement.
The arsenal available to Sarge reflects the series’ commitment to blending military seriousness with toybox creativity. Traditional firearms like rifles and machine guns sit alongside improvised weapons drawn from household objects, reinforcing the imaginative scale of the conflict. Explosives and specialty tools allow players to approach situations in different ways, whether by overwhelming foes with direct firepower or clearing obstacles strategically. Combat encounters often escalate quickly, and while enemy AI may not be sophisticated by modern standards, it is aggressive enough to create tension. At times, missions can feel punishing due to limited health or sudden ambushes, requiring careful advancement and patience rather than reckless charges.
The campaign narrative ties these mechanics together with a light yet adventurous tone. The introduction of portals connecting worlds adds a sense of progression that goes beyond simple mission completion. Instead of repeating similar backyard engagements, players move through varied thematic environments that alter both aesthetics and tactical considerations. Battling on a smooth kitchen surface feels very different from maneuvering through uneven sand or navigating tight indoor corridors. These environmental shifts help keep the pacing dynamic, even if individual objectives sometimes follow familiar patterns. The storyline, centered around stopping General Plastro’s schemes, provides enough continuity to maintain engagement without overshadowing the gameplay itself.
Visually, Army Men II reflects its late-1990s origins. Character models are simple, animations are stiff, and environmental textures lack detail compared to modern standards. However, the clarity of the top-down presentation ensures that the action remains readable, and the exaggerated scale of everyday objects maintains the charm that defines the franchise. The contrast between small green soldiers and oversized human items continues to create a whimsical battlefield atmosphere. Sound design complements this aesthetic with plastic-sounding gunfire, energetic music, and enthusiastic voice lines that give personality to Sarge and his comrades. While not technically impressive, the audiovisual presentation reinforces the game’s identity effectively.
Where the game shows its age most clearly is in control responsiveness and pathfinding. Movement can feel slightly rigid, and squad management occasionally lacks the smoothness expected from contemporary titles. These limitations can lead to moments of frustration, especially during chaotic firefights or when navigating narrow spaces. Yet for players willing to adapt to its pacing and quirks, the experience remains functional and even rewarding. The challenge curve encourages measured advancement, and completing difficult objectives can feel satisfying precisely because success demands persistence.
Ultimately, Army Men II stands as a distinctive artifact of its era, blending action and tactical elements within a uniquely playful war setting. It does not aim for the strategic depth of large-scale RTS games, nor does it fully embrace the fluidity of modern shooters, but it occupies an unusual middle ground that remains memorable. Its imaginative environments, commitment to theme, and mission-driven structure give it personality that many contemporaries lacked. For players drawn to retro experiences or the nostalgic charm of toy soldier battles, Army Men II offers a lengthy and varied campaign that captures both the seriousness and silliness of plastic warfare in equal measure.
Rating: 6/10
Good childhood memories, thanks for having it here on steam
Espectacular

l love army men 2 but miss playing online with bots
No MULTIPLAYER MOD Might as well use pirate version instead.
This was my very first Pc game that I ever played. I remember my Father and I playing it together. Game plays like dogsh*it and the controls are horrible and you can't customize the key commands. Game will always hold a special place in my heart
Army Men II is a much needed refinement of the very rough gameplay provided in the first game, and along with it brings very fun and inventive maps set in the "real world". I would consider this the pinnacle of the series on the PC and stands up there with Sarges Heroes as one of the greats in the series.
Yes.
Nostalgic, but mechanics are bad now.

Was a bit of a pain to get working on my PC but when it got going, it was a fun game
This game doesn't even have the multiplayer aspect which also includes the PVE skirmish against AI even in singleplayer. There's no point in buying this game just for the campaign.
Go to the Internet Archive and download Army Men 1 and 2 for free, and you can play with the skirmish aspect that's been gutted from this version.
Honestly a great game but sadly this version has a bunch of cut content. Probably better to emulate it or see if there's a GOG version that is superior.
One of my favorite games. EVER. But it NEEDS to be fixed!
As a 90s kid, Army Men series were one of the greatests game franchises, And this was the coolest one of the series. BUT THEY REMOVED THE BEST PART OF IT!
Army Men RTS had originally 3 game modes:
Bootcamp - which is the tutorial. It's ok. But I will never ever play it again..
Single Player - which is the campain mode. It's super fun and I just played a couple missions. I don't remember how many missions the game has. Maybe 20? They are cool, you can have a really good time with them.
Multiplayer - which is where the game shines the most, and which is the game mode they REMOVED!!! I can't believe they did that! Look, I don't ever expect any room to fill. But I loved to play this game vs the computer. The multiplayer was a RTS mode. Green, Blue, Tan and Grey. Many maps and game modes... THIS is were the gold is.
I bought this game expecting to play this last game mode... I completed the mission mode too many times when I was a kid, I just want some casual matches now...
IF THEY EVER give this game the multiplayer mode back, then I will reccommend this game. But, as it is now, I cannot.
Also, it would be very nice if they upload Army Men 3D into Steam. It had the coolest story mode ever. This franchise have great potential. But I doubt it will ever be back.
Remember developers: 90s Kids sometimes just want their old games back, and they will pay for it. Just look at what Age of Empires and Starcraft franchises are doing... I play them both.
A childhood classic! Unit control is very awkward. But hey, which 20-year-old RTS game isn't? :3
It runs fine, exactly the same as it did back in the day. However, it is missing what I would argue as half of the game by not including multiplayer; which was essentially a sandbox-like mode that, as a child, gave me way more fun than the singleplayer ever did (the 'You Lose' screens from the campaign gave me actual nightmares as a kid haha). This version is not a dealbreaker, but buyer beware, you're not getting the whole game.
This game was my childhood. Possibly the first computer game brother and I got to play that wasn't on a floppy disk. For its time, it had fantastic options for commanding small groups around and making good ways to win each level. Lock and load and go defeat the tan menace!
A good old fun game.

2/10
I had this game as a kid and really wanted to play it again.
This is, this is barely playable. my mouse keep getting out of range screwing up the game and moving my camera away.
This is an horrible, botched port.
tftrrtrtrtrt
I played this game a long long time ago when first released, even having my dad join in for the multiplayer battles sometimes. I bought it on Steam for nostalgia. I love how the game's soundtrack is just comprised of classical music, like Richard Wagner, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Edvard Grieg, Gioachino Rossini, J. Straus II (heard in the Steam trailer), etc
So as a kid i had all of these games even on my PS1. I played these for hours and hours altering the different options for each match on the multiplayer vs AI. when i saw that i could play these again on here, i bought the bundle with no hesitation whatsoever. As soon as it loaded up and the multiplayer option was gone i laready knew that there was no way i was going to sink in so much as i did as a kid. Toys in Space has the Battle mode but has restriction on how many units you can have. This one did not. set that limit to 9000 points and have 90 rifle troops. it was the best. especially when i found the turn dead to zombies option. id kill my own on purpose xD. I was so disappointed to see it gone. Steam really missed this one
A true classic did it age well? probably not but is it playable... yes it sure is. I am disappointed they the only way to play is story mode they used to have a scrimmage mode that was pretty fun. but overall I can say this classic is worth checking out for 6 bucks even better if you get it on sale like I did!
This may favorite game since child. Glad can playing this game again as nostalgia.
Waiting ARMY MEN AIR TATICS gets release.
Another childhood game , glad i played it now bc i got to finish it XDXD
Such a fantastic mix of action and strategy for an old time classic.
takes some getting used to buts fun and unique
the controls are very clunky....mouse movements are bad....
This is better than going to a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Dollar Tree to buy some Army Men
Amazing! brought me back to childhood, Great game just missing multiplayer!
This is a fun little game. The controls are a lot less annoying than the first instalment. It's not an RTS game, but more of an action shooter with some RTS elements. It's not expensive, so if you're looking for a cheap, simple time killer, this isn't a bad choice.
This game gets allot easier with the spray can.........
报错“DDERROR 8876024e: InitDirectDraw”:下载dgVoodoo2,将dgVoodooCpl.exe、dgVoodoo.conf和\MS\x86目录下的D3D8.dll、D3D9.dll、D3DImm.dll、DDraw.dll复制到游戏目录。
Great game from my childhood,if you played the campaign, it seems to run as expected and the controls are very much as they were back in the day. Wish this was a remaster, so the aspect ratio could at least me changed, but honestly it's as fun and beautiful as it was in 1999 =) (I still own this on cd, but once I saw it here I could actually play it without running separate programs)
Dispite what my profile says, I actually have days worth of time on this game. I first played this when I was about 11. I got it in an Army Men Pack, which included Army Men, Army Men II, Air Cav/helicopter (Can't remember the actual name), and Army Men: Toys in Space.
Though Toys in space had the most updated stuff, Army Men II was my favourite. If it was not for this game, I may not have ever gotten into top down video games. 23 years later, I pick this up just to remember the good ol' days. If you're looking for a fun retro game with great music, Get this one.
It's not a very good port sadly but a very nostalgic game
I am sad to see what happens to some legacy games that are published on platforms like Steam.
Like everyone says, the game is missing multiplayer and skirmish. Why remove skirmish?????????????
This game was my favorite as a child and it breaks my heart to give it a negative review...
Built a computer with 5950X, 3090Ti alone with 360Hz monitor and the next day, realize Army 2 is now on Steam. There is no way to skip this game!
However! I cannot recommend this game because they removed my favorite mode, which is player vs. AI in multiplayer menu. This menu is completely gone, just like other reviewer experienced. Hope they would add player vs AI back! I guess this version of the game will just sit in my Steam collection pile to collect dust once I finish the story line once again!
UPDATE: After dig in and research with multi-player mode with this game, I guess I can't really blame Steam or GOG or anyone for not have VS AI supported. It is just the game is too old and it is just not well compatible with Windows 10 or modern operating system. Unless the maker wants to do a re-master or patch to fix the issue, otherwise we are stuck with campaign only mode (Or grab yourself a Windows XP or Windows 98SE machine).
To force enable Multiplayer mode: https://www.gog.com/forum/army_men_series/army_men_ii_multiplayer_patch/page1 (You might encounter compatibility issues, ALT+F4 is your friend)
Great old game, needs patch to include offline pc skirmish multiplayer
I didn't grow up with this game, though I played other Army Men games as a kid. With this in mind, I feel like Army Men ll is a pretty decent game, even twenty years later. The game has you play as Sarge, who commands a small squad of green soldiers. In this game you have to fight Major Mylar, a sussy baka who has taken over the tan army and is pushing the entire green nation at the brink of destruction. It's a top down strategy game where you need to watch what happens to your soldiers, how much ammo you have on your weapons, and enemy positions as you go through the game. This game has extremely intense moments when you fight off against hordes of soldiers, while keeping your own boys alive and well. This game features many really fun moments, like the second mission, airfield mission, tank factory defense, zombie island, and more. The game also does a fantastic job making the player feel like they are all that stands between victory and total annihilation of your army. There's some missions that tend to have a lot of trial and error moments but this game can be beaten reasonably quickly. Some parts really show their age, the graphics of the game will instantly show how old it is, but despite being old it still is endearing. The A.I. of your allies, however, can sometimes get goofy when trying to follow you around tight corners, but getting stuck unless you move them yourselves or try to walk around the corner again. However, it's a cheap game that can provide hours of enjoyment for anyone who spent years playing with plastic soldiers who wishes to relive those memories.
DDERROR 8876024e: IndirectDraw
Anyone knows how to solve it?
Army Men 2 is a fantastic tactical strategy game. Although Heat.Net is long gone for online multiplayer, it is to my understanding there is a way to play multiplayer on Steam. But I digress. The Campaign of Army Men 2 is fantastic. If you're looking for a simple game to play, this would be the one.
Grew up with this game and i still think it holds up quite well, the environments are really unique and memorable like the Kitchen level aswell as the sound effects alot being stock sounds but fit this game nicely. You can battle against alot of different enemies like cockroaches, zombies and ants to name a few.
Downsides would be multiplayer and skirmish is not available in this version, so all you've got is pretty much the campaign but if you're looking to try an RTS game from the 90s, this game is still alot of fun.
The nostalgia is real!
Army Men II might actually be the greatest game of all time. So many good memories on this man, used to play this game nonstop.
:3
alot of the things in here like skirmish and multiplayer is gone, but overall i still love how the game is, its good as i remember when i was a little dumbass.
Played this game a lot as a child, glad i can play it again. Love these old school army men games!
Man that's so disappointing.... No Multiplayer/Skirmish THE BEST PART, why was it removed? only rating thumbs up for the new players
Oh nostalgia. Plastic Army Men? Classical Metal? Interesting story? Simple Game play.
So far, so good. With their sequel to Army Men they've really taken the "tactics" part of the genre seriously and I'm liking the change! Missions feel much more fair than in the original when you die as most of the time it gives you a wide range of strategies to choose from with the looser, more open levels. The game seems much shorter than its predecessor with only a handful of levels, but hey, quality over quantity right? They've kind of sacrificed the gritty wartime atmosphere however, with Sarge sounding more badass and other soldiers having quips they often say. They even named General Plastro for the first time (he was simply known as the tyrannical Tan Commander in AM1).
I wouldn't say all changes are good, however. The music is no longer those military drumbeats throughout every level and is instead mostly low bitrate tunes of classical music. Sounds like an improvement, but for a realtime tactics game set in a war environment it's seriously unfitting and distracting as hell from the gameplay. I just turned it off since it got on my nerves as soon as it began, and I'd recommend you do the same too. Also the new control scheme with all the tactical stuff you can do does feel pretty awkward, and although your allies AI is much better than the previous game's, it's still not that good and they can and will just screw you over as they do not prioritise the mission's objective as far as I can tell.
It still has a lot of awkward, cheap jank from the first game. One of the most revealing areas of this is the 7th mission, where you get screwed over by you and enemy soldiers constantly getting stuck on invisible walls and bullets hitting stuff that it shouldn't be hitting. Firing at zombies is also hellish because of this, you have to basically completely rely on the old man to kill them since most of the time your bullets just phase through them.
Overall a pretty good Army Men all things considered. It's better in the first few stages and gets much worse as you progress due to cheap jank and poor level design, but it's still a pretty solid game.
A childhood classic! Unit control is very awkward. But hey, which 20-year-old RTS game isn't? :3
I really want to buy this game again and give it a chance since it's now compatible with W10, but this time I see from the comments that the AI skirmish mode is removed. Is there a logical explanation from the publisher as to why this is removed?
Unfortunately, the game is not nearly as playable now as back when it was released. The main problem is the awful mouse support in this version. For that reason alone I have to give a negative review.
Played this a ton as a kid. Love it.
A nice nostalgic game
The multiplayer mode was unfortunately removed, but I've heard there was a way to add it back, if you still have your old AMII disc.
Out of the four AM games that exist on both Steam and GOG right now (AM1, Toys in Space, World War) this one is probably the most "balanced", and probably the easiest experience.
Gameplay is a little finicky, as you can't walk through squad mates and occasionally get stuck behind them (and controlling them is a bit of a hassle, which later titles rectify), but for most sections of the game you can solo it as Sarge and call up your troops whenever you feel like you need backup. For those who played this growing up, it's probably just as you remember it, without the Skirmish mode.
no multiplayer......
I havent played this game in almost 20 years. I never actually completed this game as a kid but I was rather surprised I managed to beat it this time around in just under 5 hours. I did love every minute of the nostalgia however.
Sadly, as mentioned here frequently in the reviews, there is no mode except the campaign. I use to do big battles against the computer but they have removed that feature.
Screen resolution is too small. Back when I'm playing this on steam, it was fitted through my screen
compared to army men 1, the controls are slightly tweaked, but still god-awful. the grafics were slightly improved as well, but the difference is marginal. only good thing is, it‘s shorter than its predecessor, so it’s over much sooner.
like most other army men games, army men II is a prime example of an interesting premise ruined by blundering execution.

ARMY MEN II
Genre: Casual Action
Release: Q1 1999
( ) 0/8 Simply one of the worst games ever made. Don't waste any money on this.
(X) 1/8 Bad. Seriously flawed with barely any redeeming qualities. Worth a couple of Cents at best, if at all.
( ) 2/8 Sub-par. Only for hardcore-fans of respective genre / series. Don't pay more than 5 bucks.
( ) 3/8 Meh-diocre. It‘s okay. Don't pay more than 10 bucks.
( ) 4/8 Decent, but not for everybody. Don't pay more than 15 bucks.
( ) 5/8 Good game, Must-play for genre- / series-fans. Worth 20 to 25 bucks max, if you are not a fan.
( ) 6/8 Great game, universal recommendation. 30 bucks would be a steal for this.
( ) 7/8 Outstanding game, a milestone of it‘s respective genre. Definitely worth its full prize.
( ) 8/8 Simply one of the best games ever made. Get this, the prize doesn't matter.
Muy buen juego para su época 😁
An old but simple game.
please add multiplayer vs bots! as well as the 6 rare addon multiplayer maps
8/10
Very good
It's everything I loved about the original BUT there's no multiplayer :( that was by far my favorite part of the game. Playing against AI was the best.
Good Old game nice to play it again after over 15 years
great game i just wish there was a shirmish mode for the game on steam like there is for the disk
Cautions! This game is imcompatible with a wide variety of model sets, from low ends to high. In addition, like many have said ,it's an incomplete version of the original game. Excluding Multiplayer mode eliminates 70% of fun. You can get it on a very cheap price, but be prepared face some diappointment.
ılk oyunlarımdan bırı bende mazisi ♥♥♥ tavsıye ederim
Way-way better than the first Army Men
but the mouse is kinda glitchy :(
Somehow the Steam version of this game made the controls even worse from the original. There is a bug where the mouse becomes unresponsive and it just so happens that you really need the mouse to work for this game.
Also no multiplayer.
I was one of those who played this game on MSN Gaming Zone CONSTANTLY. This was my favorite of the entire Army Men SAGA, even more than Toys in Space and Sarges Heroes. If you want to take a trip to down memory lane, here it is.
Second game of an awesome franchise ..with an awesome story mode ..like before you control a toy army and have to complete different task ..if you liked first one for sure you love this one too !!..have fun and enjoy !!
I bought this game thinking that it still had the multiplayer option. (against the computer) to my disappointment i finished the campaign thinking that it would unlock the option.... (unsure why... but took me 5 hours...) completely destroyed me when i finished it, as the multiplayer option is the only reason why i bought it. don't by it if you want to relive your childhood gaming, like i did.. you will only be crushed. otherwise, good game. blast from the past.
