I picked up APICO not really knowing what to expect. A cute game about bees? Sounds fun! It ended up being so much more addictive than I expected.

The whole game revolves around beekeeping, obviously. Breeding different bees, discovering new species, and restoring the environment. It starts off pretty simple, but once you get into the bee breeding mechanics it gets surprisingly deep. Trying to figure out new combinations and unlock rarer bees definitely scratched my completionist brain.

I also really appreciated that the game isn’t only about bees. The butterfly catching/breeding and flower collecting were great side activities, especially when I got a bit stuck or wasn’t sure what direction to go with the bees. It was a nice break while still feeling like I was progressing and helping restore the ecosystem.

The vibe of the game was too cute! The pixel art is super cozy, the music is relaxing, and it’s just the kind of game you can sink hours into without even noticing. I’d sit down to “check on my bees for a minute” and suddenly it’s been three hours. I'm not sure if 100% completing all the achievements in 57hrs of gameplay is normal, but to me it felt pretty quick.

It definitely gets grindy at times, especially when you’re waiting on specific bee mutations or gathering materials, but if you enjoy slow progression and building up your systems over time it’s so satisfying!

Overall it’s such a relaxing little game. Cute bees, cozy islands, and lots of experimenting. I wasn’t expecting to get as invested as I did, but now I’m very very emotionally attached to all of my bees.

Процес збору бджіл затягує неймовірно, я прямо відчув цей вайб Віктора Андрійовича, коли кожна бджола - то як рідна дитина, а пасіка стає центром всесвіту. Дуже неочікувано і круто було зустріти ще й метеликів, це прям докинуло балів до загальної милоти гри. Все максимально спокійно, без напруження, ідеально, щоб просто заземлитися після робочого дня. Якщо любиш щось колекціонувати і відчувати цей особливий зв'язок з природою (ну, ви зрозуміли), то гра залітає на ура.

Breeding bees is very calming. No rush in this game, no Stardew Valley calendar always running in the background. Time of day matters for some things, but it becomes very easy to "wait" out time. There is a lunar cycle for some collections, but other than that - all calm, no min-maxing needed :)

I think this is slightly easier than the MudBorne, I like the farming and chill vibe, not so hectic. Do stuff in your own space, and not much repetitive in my opinion, as you want to complete the collection so there is also something different about it.

This game is like a more relaxed and more "scientific" version of Stardew Valley surrounding bee keeping. It does so in a very pleasant ways and has everything to breeding, to rehabilitation of species in nature. From honey, and wax, to pollen and glue. I like how there are little (though basic) minigames for production and when they start to be annoying you upgrade them to make it easier.

The game is just pleasant to play and one can see that a lot of thought and love went into it.

I’ve played APICO for many hours and absolutely love the bee theme and the super cute retro design. I first tried the free demo, which is limited, but it already gives you a very good understanding of the core mechanics.

One small criticism: the in-game action windows and inventory management feel a bit unusual at first. Moving items between different windows takes some getting used to — though that’s common in many games.

Later on, breeding bees becomes quite challenging, and I had to look up the trick online to fully understand it. Still, the cozy and humorous in-game texts make the whole experience very charming.

What I really enjoyed towards the end was setting up portals everywhere and being able to instantly beam myself across the map. It also felt incredibly satisfying to build automated production chains where everything was extracted and sold automatically — and all I had to do was harvest the money notes. 🙂

Once you’re more familiar with the game, I recommend trying the official mods that expand the content even further — mainly for hardcore fans.

I have huge respect for the two developers behind it, Ell (ellraiser) and Jamie (metakitkat) of TNgineers. They undoubtedly spent countless hours creating this game, and in an interview they shared that a portion of the game’s sales goes toward bee-related conservation charities and beekeeping projects in the real world.

I honestly wish there were more developers creating such unique themes with lovely retro-style designs. And the successor game — the frog-breeding sim called Mudborne — is also fantastic and worth checking out.

Summary: This game is so cute. All the bee puns are adorable. It does get to a point where you feel like there is so many tasks you need to do, but take breather, relax. There are no consequences for not getting to anything “in-time.” Nothing expires, there’s no time limit, you’ll get to it when you get to it, and it’s not going anywhere (except the solitary bees in the bee hotel, you do need to stay and watch for those).

I first played Mudborne, and enjoyed Em’s work so much on that game that I quickly went perusing through the rest of their profile in search for more made by them and their team. APICO is a beekeeping sim with Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley vibes but with its own unique assets and mechanics. APICO took my favorite part of SDV, which was the actual farming portion, and made it into an exploratory collectathon. Combined with accessibility options in the menus to make things less frustrating or painful for people with disabilities (thank you so, so much!) Em has effectively integrated toggleable QOL into the game itself, which is a beautiful thing. I wish more games outside of the indie scene did the same thing. I am not a “professional” reviewer but I thoroughly enjoyed both APICO and its spiritual successor and am eagerly awaiting the release of the team’s next game.

Lovely little bee menu management sim.

Firstly, I can't overstate how excellently the UI flows in this game. This is the 3rd copy of APICO that I've purchased and played (also own on Switch 1 and PS5). Both controller and mouse input works well, but mouse input is superior. The menu interactions while playing on PC are reminiscent of navigating windows explorer menus, in a good way.

The crafting in the game is a tad more interactive than most, which is a nice touch. The accessibility menu offers generous configurations to modify the gameplay as needed to match your play style -- without penalty to progress or achievements.

There are plenty of in-game resources to reference if you need guidance. There's no urge to rush through everything and no penalty if you do, or don't. The bee management part is super engaging and feeds the "gotta catch em all" vibe. Subtle humor included throughout that reminds you that this game was created by people with true passion.

To round out my praise for this lovely bee menu management sim, the dev studio donates to various charities relative to their games. A portion of all game profits for APICO go to bee type charities, and their 2 other games are also linked similarly to relative charities. Couldn't love that more.

For some context, I'm also a fan of stardew valley, Minecraft, grounded, no mans sky, coral island, corekeeper, and the-like. There is much more that could be said in support of playing this game, but I've got bees to tend.

Very cool game. I like the bees, I like the genetics mechanic (I absolutely cannot wrap my head around IRL genetics but I did manage to figure things out in this game), I like that you don't need to struggle too much to get to the end of the story but then you can encounter some good challenges if you want to have all achievements, and I like that you can steal people's furniture when you're too lazy to craft them.
