Year Walk is one of those rare games that lingers with you long after you've put it down — I went in knowing nothing about Swedish folklore and came out genuinely curious about Årsgång and the mythological creatures I encountered along the way. The atmosphere is the real star here: the pale, wintry art style and haunting soundtrack work together to create something that feels less like a game and more like wandering through a dark folk tale. A few of the puzzles had me reaching for hints, and the navigation can get confusing since many forest areas start to look alike, but the in-game encyclopedia helps ground you in the lore and actually becomes essential to the experience. I'll warn you like I wish someone had warned me: stick around after the credits and do a second playthrough — the story doesn't fully reveal itself until then, and that's when everything clicks into something genuinely unsettling. For around $6 and a couple hours of your time, it's an easy recommendation for anyone who appreciates atmospheric, story-driven games over pure action.

What surprised me most is how tragic the story becomes once you reach the end and unlock the researcher’s journal. Those entries reframe everything — the puzzles, the apparitions, the violence — and suddenly the game’s quiet strangeness becomes heartbreakingly human. It’s a story about obsession, loss, and the way folklore preserves the emotional truth of a tragedy long after the facts have faded.

It took me almost three hours to finish, but that pacing felt right. Year Walk rewards lingering. It rewards letting the atmosphere breathe. And when the final pieces click into place, the emotional weight hits with the force of a folktale that’s been waiting centuries to be understood.

It’s beautiful. It’s sorrowful. And it’s one of the most fascinating uses of folklore I’ve seen in a game — not as decoration, but as the very bones of the narrative.

An atmospheric little adventure, with great esthetics and soms conundrums to solve. Based on Swedish folklore, which is always cool for a Swede to find. Some jump scares in the dead of night, and a passage with music that I, myself, had to use the guide system to solve, tone deaf as I apperently am.

It's short, but the ending promises some replayability. This will from now on be the first game I play every year.

красивое, атмосферное предновогоднее приключение с элементами шведского фолк хоррора. Типа как ночь перед рождеством, только у пендосов. Некоторые загадки непонятные и нужно долго думать, обьяснений не дают че происходит, однако можно и самому додумать, вкратце гг гуляет в соло по ночному снежному лесу и всьречает разных злых духов этих мест. В дополение советую почитать длс книжку оформленую как сказки для детей как раз про этих самых злых духов. ПЛюс вайб

I honestly hope this little gem will get to be known by way more people, cause it deserves a lot of praise!
A beautiful delve into northern folklore with quite clever (but never frustrating) puzzles and a beautiful artstyle;
Also, the way details are slowly uncovered and especially the means by which it happens, made the experience even more engaging (as another reviewer stated, you will keep mentally coming back to the plot even after being done with the game, and that to me is better than mere longevity in terms of gameplay hours).

Dieses Spiel ist ein echtes kleines Juwel. Obwohl es grafisch nicht besonders aufwendig ist, zieht dieses Spiel einen tief in den Bann. Ich habe selten ein Spiel gespielt, das so lange nachgewirkt hat. Die Spielzeit ist zwar nur kurz, aber für den Preis absolut in Ordnung. Wer ein atmosphärisches Spiel sucht und sich für nordische Mythologie und Brauchtum interessiert, der sollte hier absolut reinschauen. Eines meiner Lieblingsspiele.

Completely out there and wonderfully weird, but in the best way. The atmosphere is eerie and immersive, and the Scandinavian folklore woven through it is fascinating. The puzzles are clever and satisfying, and the whole experience feels mysterious and unique.

I can see how some people might not enjoy its strange, quiet vibe, but I loved every part of it.

I feel like I over use the word, "atmosphere," when I talk about games I like . . . but what do you want me to do, Year Walk has incredible atmosphere. Eerie and unsettling, but also somber. Almost feels sad somehow. And even after 6 hours and multiple playthroughs, I still haven't unraveled all of its mysteries.

I already played the game in 2014 on an Ipad. It was also released on Steam. A nice little mthyical and eerie experience into a norse ritual and legend. Eerie but not scary or gory. I can recommend it with best will. It will keep you entertained for around 4 hours. And i recommend having a piece of paper and a pencil ready because you want to write down patterns and other discoveries you will find on your walk.

Short and... interesting. It drips with atmosphere, while trading it a little for "clarity" - both of what's happening, and the controls. You need to intuit how to interact with things, or where to go - but ultimately, it adds some charm to it and make it less of a "just click things" kind of game. You need to discover some stuff on your own.

新年的钟声响起，我踏上Year Walk，祈求能看到未来。原本是想知道我和她是否能在一起，但却看见了她在草长莺飞中躺在草坪上，流着血。

游戏的吓人手法很低级，纯jump scare。但是民俗和游戏结合的非常好，而且这个Year Walk，真的太浪漫了，尤其对于我这个东北仔，在皑皑白雪中夜行，天空深紫如碘气，与鬼怪斗智斗勇，只为预知一个在未来一定会觉得很幼稚的未来。这想象起来完全没有任何壁垒，甚至会越想越醉心于其中。说实话，想象中我最爱的场景，就是在晴朗的冬夜，深紫色的穹顶下，木屋里火炉噼啪，烘烤出木材的香。外面是厚厚的雪，风一吹耳朵生疼，一想到这些我就把身上的毯子又裹紧了一些。而且，我也非常喜欢在冬夜，零下二三十度的室外夜行。所以这游戏完全戳在我的偏好上。
唉，虽然现在在地域嗨的大背景下，管东北叫北欧是一种调侃，但我是真的很希望让这句调侃能变成现实，我知道零下二三十度的地方绝非宜居，但我真的很喜欢。如果也能像北欧一样发达的话，我也不需要去不喜欢的地方勉强生活。其实最怕的就是生长在有特色的地方，并且让这个特色成功的融入到了你的记忆深处。

其实最早接触这个游戏，应该是2014年，当时在手机上玩，被吓到了，于是没有继续打下去。后来多次尝试通关，不过因为这个游戏没中文也就作罢。但是我一直记得这款游戏，可能是因为这个民俗故事真的很有魅力，也可能是一种执念。这么多年我换过几部手机，但每部手机上都有游戏附带的Year Walk Companion，提醒我还没有完全通关这个游戏，直到今天。我不仅通关了这款游戏，还为它写了一篇指南，我终于可以问心无愧的将手机上的那个白底黑色羊头的Companion删掉。
就像和一个老朋友道别一样，不管是曾经如胶似漆还是淡交似水，只有真正互道再见的那一刻，才知道个中滋味。我可以继续留着手机里的Companion，但是真正的Companion，却总会有分别的那一天。人们总有自己的路要走，也许同行才是短暂的幸运。
也祝他们未来的日子，能够一切顺利。

Year walk is a really great introduction to the weird dark world of Swedish folklore, and normally horror/puzzle games are not my jam but this game really stands out with its incredible art, atmosphere, and storytelling.

Its a puzzle game and lack many other gameplay elements other than world traversal and clicking on certain objects or items, but I feel that it is almost necessary to put the player in a state of mind that matches the character they play. If u're looking for a quick puzzle game with easy access info on some Swedish folklore and some eerie atmospheric background music to go with it, this game meets ur criteria!

First off, absolutely beautiful background music! i turned it all the way up with headphones in a dark room to set the scene- and I'm glad I did. it's a great game to play during the night if u're up for smth creepy before bed. there are some cases of startling changes in the music to keep u on ur toes, and the graphics read like a child's storybook, which I found all the more compelling.

This game is packed with all kinds of interesting lore that any creepypasta-enjoyer should find reason enough to give it a go. the puzzles are pretty fun the first and second time around, and u'll probably end up playing through multiple times just to experience all the different aspects of the game. after a while, once u're familiar with all the scenes and puzzles, it starts feeling more like a race against time to see how fast u can complete a run-through in, if that sort of self-competitiveness is ur thing.

I thought it was great how much u can learn just from reading all the things written within the game about Year Walking, and especially how the creepy aesthetic was realistic in the way that isolating without any food or water for a day, and then walking around at night would probably make u see increasingly messed up and "off" things in reality too. i felt like the game did a great job at capturing the types of things people see as they become more paranoid of their surroundings due to sleep deprivation, which is why i think the game is best played at night when running on little sleep. definitely makes for a better and more unsettling experience!

If u're looking for a game with thought-provoking and mind-boggling puzzles, this one probably isn't it, but I'd still say to give it a chance anyway more so for the story and graphics than the puzzles. if u do end up playing on little sleep, maybe that'll give u a harder time with the puzzles. my favourite puzzle was the matching music notes one, felt super satisfying realising how good my ears are at recognising matching notes

[b]Year Walk[/b] attempts to introduce players to the tradition of Year Walking by immersing them in a simulated experience. In that regard, the game succeeds—I now understand the tradition and found learning about it enjoyable. However, as a game, it largely fails.

It presents itself as a point-and-click adventure, but the puzzles simply aren’t strong enough. One puzzle relies on sound, yet I still don’t understand how I managed to solve it. Two others abruptly introduce unique interface mechanics not used anywhere else in the game, creating unnecessary frustration. After struggling through those, the remaining puzzles provide no challenge whatsoever. The game also forces excessive backtracking across the map, which mostly feels like a waste of time.

Visually and aurally, Year Walk is more successful. The stylized spooky animation pairs well with its eerie soundtrack, creating an engaging horror-inspired atmosphere. For a short game, the experience of tromping through the snow is enjoyable enough.

Beyond just replicating a Year Walk, the game introduces post-game content that requires yet another "fourth wall" leap of logic to uncover. After that, players must sift through 25–30 journal entries to complete the pseudo time-traveling story. This portion actually provides a compelling character to connect with, leaving me wondering why the developers didn’t incorporate it into the main game.

Overall, Year Walk feels like a promising concept that lacked sufficient development, particularly in its gameplay elements. The most compelling parts of the story seem tacked on at the end, as if an editor tried to fix it but ran out of time. I give Year Walk a [b]2 out of 5[/b]—its saving grace being that it doesn’t take long to play. Ultimately, you're only slightly better off playing this than reading the Wikipedia page on the same subject.

I'm writing this twelve years after Year Walk's release on iOS. Having owned this for so long, I still didn't play it until 2025. It is wild how strongly Year Walk holds up. Its puzzles are milder than Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, but still inventive and challenging. Its grim children's book aesthetic looks great on a modern screen. Its story was ahead of its time. A short, spooky puzzle game with the promise of something more in replays. Totally recommended.

Not to repeat a cliche, but I wish there was a middle option for reviews. I'm glad I played it, I loved the aesthetics, the art, and the folklore, but there's a twist that, in my opinion, makes the story take a kinda corny turn where I stop taking it seriously and start rolling my eyes a little bit. I prefer the beginning, when it feels more grounded and mysterious, and connected to actual folklore.

That said, it's super charming, I liked the puzzles, and I actually quite enjoy a game that makes me write down notes, so I recommend it. Not sure why I'm writing a review for a game from a decade ago, but whatever, have fun!

Это очень маленькая и коротенькая головоломка, на которую вы потратите не больше трех часов, даже если будете читать весь текст, который имеется в игре. Почему же она так захватывает воображение? Потому что мир, созданный ее авторами, насыщен деталями, пропитан шведским фольклором и мифологией. Эта игра не про геймплей, а про атмосферу — рисовка, вдохновленная мультфильмами Норштейна, музыка, напоминающая отчасти эмбиент и фолк-рок, а отчасти — колыбельные и мелодии из музыкальной шкатулки, так складывается атмосфера сказочности, переходящая местами в лайтовый хоррор. Все эти элементы на своих местах, все настраивают на нужный лад. И вот ты уже действительно ощущаешь себя или помощником мельника, отправившимся в странствие по ночному лесу, или молодым этнографом, ищущим в лесу рунические камни. Пусть даже концовка может вызвать недоумение, все равно трудно не испытывать благодарность авторам за такой чудесный эстетический опыт. В моем пантеоне у этой игры десятилетней давности всегда будет 9/10

I had dozens of pens in my room that I haven't used in years because it's 2025 and who tf needs to write anything anymore.

Well, I look for a pen to use while playing, and none of them ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ worked. Not even unused pens fresh out the box. Why? Do pens ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ expire if not used? Do ball point pens have a "Best if used by" date or something? The answer is yes, apparently.

W/e. Found a mechanical pencil that got me through the game. This game is one of a kind; well written, cool puzzles, impactful visuals and music, genuinely creepy.

Woah, this game is a hidden gem!
All is wonderful, started with artwork, through the psychodelic story to the soundtrack.
The story deserves to take a deeper look into, especially reading files, including secret files available after finishing the main story. It actually has a meaning.
I absolutely recommend playing Year Walk.

Pequeño cuento sueco sobre el camino de año. Un juego muy cortito para aprender sobre costumbres nórdicas como este caminar de un año en el que se mezclan otras criaturas con una ambientación fantástica y una jugabilidad curiosa. Lástima que sea tan corto. Creo que fue el primer juego de este estudio y ya apuntaban maneras, tienes algunos puzles no muy dificiles y una historia que a mi me gustó bastante (la parte del diario que juega al metajuego). Corto pero interesante para conocer algo más de la cultura sueca.

Definitely good music, no story, it is spooky. Navigating map is boring, you need to constantly check the map about where you are, you need to take notes/screenshots to remember stuff later on. Overall, I would not recommend to play it. Maybe it was good for 2014 but definitely not in the class for 2024.

I think if you're interested in folklore, puzzles, and a good short story, this game is great. I loved the encyclopedia with info on the supernatural beings, and enjoyed the journal entries you can unlock after the first playthrough, revealing much more of the story.

However, the game isn't very replayable. There's two endings and several very easy achievements; you can get all that done in like 3-4 playthroughs and it takes 20 minutes tops to complete a playthrough. After that, there's nothing else you can get out of the game.

My other complaint is the puzzles combined with how awkward the travelling/map is takes away from the suspense. The map is a bit weird to navigate and you need to take notes of all the runes in order to progress in a certain part. The spookiness and anticipation completely fizzled out for me as I wandered around feeling bored and confused trying to make sure I got every rune.

Overall, I would recommend it if you're into visual novels and folklore. I don't recommend it if you expect a game with a lot of engagement and hours of gameplay.

As a Swedish-American I appreciated this documentary of an ordinary winter's day.

That said, I could not have possibly picked a better game to play after Papo Y Yo, both because there are some lightly similar themes of childhood tragedy in both and because Year Walk falls into the "quick enough that you can just focus on enjoying the experience" side of casual games, though it also contains enough genuinely interesting and disturbing narrative and even lore (A+ to any game that has in-character journals!) to keep you thinking about it after you finish playing. And I have no doubt I will be thinking about this game on New Year's Eve this year.

Por casualidades de la vida acabé conociendo al investigador de folklore que escribió el estudio en el que se basa este juego. Viéndolo con perspectiva, habiendo desarrollado un juego tan sencillo de puzzles tan atractivos y de inmersión psicológica tan guay, creo que el trabajo de los desarrolladores ha conseguido crear algo único y, para mi, unos planos para diseñar los juegos indie de folklore.

Muito, muito bom! SIMOGO já acertava desde cedo com uma criatividade impressionante. Adorei conhecer sobre o folclore sueco e suas criaturas, principalmente sobre o próprio ritual do Year Walk. 一款现实与艺术意义大于实际游玩价值的游戏。

游戏标题Year Walk，也即本作的主题，是瑞典民间的一种已经消逝的传统民俗，参与者通过数日的断食与自我拘禁，在夜晚在林间漫游并经历数个怪物的考验，渴求在时空的裂缝间寻求一窥未来的能力。游戏中谜题都来源于相关的民俗传说，主线剧情、场景设计也都是改编自现实中真实的卷宗与资料。由于亲身经历那段历史且尚存于世的人已经不存在了，制作者请来了专业的相关领域教授背书，光实地的资料查找和取材就花费了数月之久，将可能是世界上尚存的最新的有关year walk的记录一一整理，这才有了现在我们眼前的这款《Year Walk》，可以说他们以游戏为载体，将消逝的历史又复活了过来，因此本作极具现实意义与艺术价值。

但尽管有着颇高的艺术价值和精致的美术，本作在隐藏剧情上的处理也非常出彩，但不可否认的是本作作为一款解谜游戏在设计上还有着诸多缺陷，简单来说就是“不好玩”。

首先最大的问题是引导的缺失，主线各部分间的推进线索非常不明晰，如果不看提示的话，往往不知道下一步要做什么。举个例子，流程中需要一把钥匙开启大门，但获取后，钥匙却一点点融化在了地上。此时我完全是不知所措的，然而点开提示后，线索为“钥匙变成了水，去哪里找它呢？”，这才明白是暗示需要去小溪。但是钥匙在融化消失的时候我个人是完全没有联想到“水”这个元素的...

其次就是玩家可以进行哪些操作是不明确的。（本段落中包含谜题的剧透）游戏只在最开头明确指出可以通过方向键移动场景，除此之外便无任何操作教程。但后续的多个谜题都需要用鼠标一直保持按住物体的同时，按下键盘进行移动，将物品在场景之间转移。而游戏中任何地方包括提示中都没有对这种操作进行了暗示，不断尝试无果后我只能参考攻略继续推进。另一个谜题在这个问题上可能更具代表性：流程中玩家需要开启一扇柜门，但是柜门被两个钳子夹住了，上面分别写着“U”和“N”，由于游戏中出现了大量符号相关的谜题，我的第一反应是这两个字母可能有其他的前置谜题，于是在地图上像无头苍蝇一样四处乱转，最终仍是一无所获。打开提示后，线索为“to unlock, you need actual keys/为了解锁，你需要真正的钥匙”，我仍是一头雾水。看了攻略后才知道“key”的真正含义是“键盘按键”，需要按下键盘的“U”和“N”来开锁...

本作中玩家操作不明确的问题让我想起了游戏史上的一个臭名昭著的谜题——来自《断剑》中的山羊谜题，山羊谜题和本作中的部分谜题本质上是一样的。山羊谜题中玩家需要躲避山羊的攻击，移动地上的木头。解开谜题的关键是双击鼠标让角色奔跑，从而利用山羊两次攻击的时间差来移动木头。但是双击可以让角色奔跑这一操作游戏却完全没给任何提示。游戏交互的基本单位，也即决策，是维持玩家专注度的关键，设计一个良好决策系统的一个关键就在于每个决策都应具备一定的可预测性，游戏不是现实，是虚拟的，这个虚拟世界的运行机制完全取决于设计师，玩家如果连可以做什么都不知道，何谈决策，何谈解谜？举个例子，如果让一个初次接触游戏的人去玩FPS，但是不在游戏中提示如何换弹（当然大多数人都知道是R键），那么结果会如何？我想他一定会在弹药耗尽后非常沮丧吧，这也是为什么这么基础的换弹，这种对于99%以上的人来说都已经是习以为常的操作，在几乎任何稍具规模的FPS游戏中都一定会在教程中进行提示。

本作的另一个问题是成就系统的设计，就像另一款同出自本作制作组的《再见狂野之心》一样，玩家在正常通关后一般是不会解锁任何成就的，这种不同寻常的设计我并无意见。《再见狂野之心》中正是通过这种独特的成就设计引导玩家探索了诸多正常流程中不会体验到的玩法，但本作的成就系统却没有做到这一点，大部分都是与游戏无关的谜语人成就，甚至包括一个与ios平台的《DEVICE 6》（也是他们的游戏）的彩蛋成就，同样也没有任何提示，我想99%的玩家光凭自己都是想不到如何解锁的。

除去上述的三个问题，游戏中还通过廉价的jump scare来营造恐怖氛围，这种设计我同样也不认可。我是因为非常喜欢《再见狂野之心》，才想在他们的新作《罗蕾莱与激光眼》上架前体验一下这部旧作，没想到游戏体验如此不堪。我不否认游戏的艺术价值和创意，但就谜题设计上我由衷的不认可，在我眼中本作是一款好游戏，但同样也是一款不好玩的游戏。

Played this years ago on iOS and was a bit too spooked to finish it. It really stuck with me for a long time, long enough that when I got my Deck I bought this and finished it in one sitting. Really glad I finally finished it.

If you like the old world mythology, the folk tales before they got sanitized, definitely play this. I had just finished Inscryption when I played this that second time - they both hit similar vibes.

В целом хороший квест-головоломка. Игра довольно короткая, что впрочем компенсируется её невысокой ценой. Основная история сносная, но её подают лишь в начале и в конц. Энциклопедические описания мифических существ конечно интересны, но это не перекрывает провисание игры в середине. Что же касается самих головоломок, то они тут оформлены очень просто и без особой изюминки. Больше же всего мне естественно понравились атмосфера зимнего предновогоднего леса с его таинственными лесными обитателями и визуальный стиль игры.

Warning: if you have CTS this one hurts, especially the ending where you are asked to twirl the mouse around.

I just hated this game, which was surprising. This kind of thing is usually up my alley. But wow, the tedious map, the vague, nearly non-existent story, needing to HOLD items with the mouse and drag them around. Not friendly for those with bad wrists.

But what really makes this game a stinker is the puzzles. This was maybe my least favorite batch of puzzles in any game so far. You're asked to remember numbers and symbols written on walls and god that is just so boring and lazy. TThe puzzles weren't used to tell a story really, outside of maybe one, they were just there. ♥♥♥♥ this game man. Gonna go ice my mouse hand.

Year Walk is an absolutely gorgeous and haunting game that I find myself coming back to years after my first playthrough. It never seems to lose it's impact despite me having played a good 5 or 6 times now. Eerie music and lovely visuals that perfectly complement each other. More than worth the price, and a must-play if you want a short and beautiful narrative experience.
