Wrack es la combinación de un cómic americano de los 90, Doom y Mega Man. Una propuesta indie de FPS basada en niveles que tiene harto corazón, el cual ameniza el hecho de que algunos elementos quedan algo crudos, aun así la aventura dura lo suficiente para probar su concepto de gameplay sin sentirse repetitivo. Recomiendo jugarlo en alta dificultad para darle esa sensación retro de hacer que cuente cada vida extra.

Reseña extendida:
Wrack fue uno de los primeros juegos FPS neo-retro en llegar a Steam, cuando la idea de volver al estilo de juego clásico de Doom y Quake (en medio de los shooters militares lineales de la década del 2010) todavía parecía fresca y el programa Greenlight permitía a la comunidad elegir y retroalimentar premisas específicas de desarrolladores indies como ''Final Boss'' en este caso. Para ser honesto, todavía pienso que este juego mantiene una identidad original. Sí, toma inspiración de esos shooter de los 90', pero a diferencia de muchos otros contendientes que llegaron a la plataforma con el tiempo, Wrack, no pretende ser un sucesor espiritual o un imitador. No intenta ser un Doom, un Blood, un Duke Nukem. Tiene su propia voz, su propia estética y su propia variante a la fórmula.

El gameplay central de Wrack se basa en lo hipercinético que es el combate, haciendo cadenas de enemigos muertos donde acumulas hasta 4 niveles de energía que al liberarla con el mouse derecho logras un ataque más poderoso del arma en tus manos, además de acumular un montón de puntos que más allá del modo Score Attack los necesitaras para ganar vidas extras. Es un interesante sistema que recompensa el uso adecuado de armas, velocidad, reflejos y el saber reconocer una oportunidad.

El sistema de vidas y puntos de control ha sido criticado porque se separa de la libertad de hacer save states de los shooters de antaño, pero para serle honesto, yo pienso que le da a este juego una identidad especial. Los niveles han sido diseñados de manera que estén divididos en secciones, cada uno con un punto de control tras presionar el botón que desbloquea la siguiente o el portón final. Los jefes son la principal razón de llegar al final con vidas acumuladas, ya que tienen un patrón letal pero predecible (De nuevo, tomando del ritmo de Mega Man). Este no es un shooter donde puedes hacer save scumming, aunque sí puedes hacer un guardado rápido temporal, pero la idea es que te impulsa a memorizar el nivel para hacer la ruta más óptima y que cada jefe se sienta como un desafío que requiere tu total atención y tus reflejos.

Un factor que le da mucha legitimidad a Wrack, es su soundtrack por Bobby Prince, de fama por sus composiciones para juegos de ID software y Apogee (3D Realms). Las melodías fuertes en sintetizador y cuerdas eléctricas evocan la sensación de un shooter retro y enérgico, al igual que un ambiente de Cyberpunk azucarado. Es agresivo, pero sabe que es caricaturesco también.

Hablemos de presentación, los gráficos tienen ese estilo ''celshading'' que hace que el juego se vea como un cómic traído a la vida, además de ayudar a que los enemigos sean leíbles a distancia, lo cual facilita las cadenas de kills. Hasta la interfaz evoca a un cómic; ahora, sin tan solo las cinemáticas parecieran ilustraciones profesionales, este estilo sería redondo.

Ok, no todo es bueno en Wrack, hay varios elementos que lo alejan de ser grandioso, vayamos rápido:
1) La lentitud del cambio de armas y la baja cadencia de disparo de la mayoría de estas tiran hacia abajo la mecánica de combos, nunca se siente tan dinámico como debería ser.
2) Hay pocos tipos de enemigos, pocas armas y solo 9 niveles contando el secreto. Es una aventura que termina antes de que se sienta repetitiva, pero la base queda muy corta y limitada, lo cual afecta el siguiente punto.
3) Aunque el tener un Workshop con mapas es siempre bienvenido, lamentablemente la comunidad de Wrack nunca surgió y solo hay un puñado de niveles comunitarios originales.
4) Los jefes tienen un 30% de salud de más para lo que supone sería un juego veloz, desde la segunda mitad de la campaña empiezan a parecer esponjas de balas.
5) Como mencioné, el soundtrack de Bobby Prince es interesante en concepto, pero los temas no son tan memorables como deberían ser. Algunos suenan como demos que les falta un ritmo central fuerte y pese a que la campaña es muy acotada, hay niveles que comparten pistas. Si es que llegaste a adquirir el soundtrack por separado, este viene con pistas que no fueron utilizadas, lo cual me deja alucinando. ¿Por qué?
6) No hay componente multijugador, a diferencia de muchos otros juegos del cual este pide prestado, solo contrarreloj y marcadores de puntaje dan re-jugabilidad.
7) La historia se ve muy hecha por encima. Es corta, incompleta y tonalmente confundida. No quiere ser una trama seria, pero tampoco provee un escenario para que el protagonista se vea como el '''badass'' que la portada sugiere, y aunque hay varios chistes cursis, pues, queda corta para llamarla una comedia. Es como si quisiera ser una caricatura jugética con humor meta, pero la historia es tan nada que no te vende a ningún personaje para el final, lo cual hace que como obra no se sienta notable. Añada a eso el hecho de que muchas de las ilustraciones de las cinemáticas parecen bosquejos a medio hacer, con líneas de más y pintura desbordada. No del todo storyboards pero definitivamente incompletas. Lo cual nos lleva a...
8) Termina en un cliffhanger descarado. Originalmente, se había anunciado un episodio 2 y episodio 3 a modo de DLC, pero eso nunca pasó porque este juego no vendió como se esperaba. En vez de capitalizar en su nicho, los desarrolladores hicieron un spin-off centrado en Defensa de Torres, del cual incluso menos gente jugó y, para ser franco, nadie había pedido.

Como franquicia, Wrack se tropezó justo cuando el boom de los ''boomer shooters'' surgía en Steam. Escribo esta reseña en anticipación del anunciado Remake en desarrollo, sea esa la versión definitiva o no, solo quiero recordar que el juego original todavía tiene un encanto particular que demostrar aún en este sub mercado sobresaturado de la escena indie, donde te venden obras basadas en nostalgia por el gaming de antaño bajo el sacrificio de no ofrecer algo nuevo o memorable en sí mismo.

Wrack would have absolutely crushed it when it came out and our only FPS options were Call of Duty and like Homefront or something. Nowadays though it has to stand up to Dusk or Turbo Overkill and it just can't quite do it. Nevertheless, Wrack was the right game released at the right time, and it's worth a quick look whenever the remake drops. I wish the best to the developers.

This is mainly a competent FPS Game that is in the vein of High Concept Sci Fi Shooters of the past, but despite gunplay being mostly alright I absolutely enjoyed the unique Utopian Setting for this game. This was two years before Doom 2016 and 4 before DUSK and it ends up feeling more like an Arcade Shooter than it does anything related to the current slew of Indie Shooters out now. I mean, you never get world building this interesting nowadays unless it's in a Big Modern Shooter and the Utopian setting is like two years before Overwatch, so this game was doing things that really hadn't been seen before in the FPS Space. The fact that the military has been dismantled on the planet because of a reactor that can have infinite resources, thus making world peace is actually intriguing. I really think the best parts are the technical bits and world building. The graphics are also pretty nice, this would fit perfectly into a graphic novel series.

But really, the gameplay isn't fantastic or anything. I played on Medium and some of the boss fights were tedious especially the last one, not to mention having the rocket launcher splash damage instantly kill you is BS, not even Classic Doom on Hurt Me Plenty is this harsh when it comes to Rocket Splash Damage. It's certainly not as polished as games like DUSK or Turbo Overkill, but there is a sense that these guys were trying to do something new here. I like it overall, it feels like the Milky Way Chocolate Bar of video games, it's small, tastes nice and is good for the short term. I don't have much else to say other than I thought it was very crappy that they decided to end the game on a massive cliffhanger. Thankfully a Remake and Sequel are being made, so lets hope the other episodes will be ready to play soon as this was just Episode One shockingly.

I got this as a gift,
Both me and my friend were curious about it but optimistic,

Then I started playing, Small issues that I was explaining with "its from 2014, it can get a pass"
Until like map 5, and then game begins to be repetitive and map 7 game starts to be down right stupid and unfair, and that is merely the level, it also has a frustrating and badly designed boss. Oculus, who can send homing rockets YOU CANNOT OUT RUN, you need to DUCK in the small lowered portion of the arena, how would you guess that? I DON'T KNOW, LUCK OF THE STUPID I GUESS.

and there is many, many more issues with this, small problems just collectiong to be blown out of proportion. Its a pain, its a mess
One particular I can bring is bazooka being a mess, it can one shot you on 100hp/100 armor. That is if you hit yourself.

Not to mention there is only ONE episode, and its the ONLY episode.
there is level editor, but I don't even think you should bother with it.

The game is abandoned, unfinished and left in this state, its just not worth it,

Lo tenía desde hace tiempo, y me dije: me gusta sus gráficos, parece divertido, pero no... aquí va todo lo que no me gustó:
- Tiene mucho delay en cambiar de arma, por lo cual el sistema de combos (trata de matar enemigos en sucesión) es fácil perderlo si te quedas sin munición de la armas que estas usando en ese momento, quitandole frenetismo
- cuando pulsas la tecla de usar el personaje parece que está estreñido haciendo "um" (la típica E o F para abrir puertas) -_-' da cringe
- corres que parece que tiene cohetes en el culo, pero saltas que da pena
- poco arsenal de armas, creo que solo la espada, pistola, escopeta y arma de pulsos
- estas combatiendo y de repente la puerta entre una sala y otra se cierra porque te alejaste de ella, debes jugar haciendo "push" o los enemigos se acumularan
- situaciones injustas donde al instante de abrir una puerta te encuentras enemigos en un espacio donde no puedes casi esquivar
- esto me molesto mucho: esa necesidad de hace laberinticos los niveles, POR QUE???? simplemente... POR QUE, si quiero jugar un laberinto me voy a un juego de laberintos
- mucho texto en formato de "png" + texto, a lo visual novel... POR QUE????? que necesidad había de eso, queda cutrisimo, es un shooter, en todo caso cuéntame la historia en medio del combate, y sin tantisimo texto
- la música es HORRIBLE, pero es que los sonidos TAMBIÉN
- aquí voy con el sonido: los enemigos casi no hacen sonido, no tienen sonido de pasos, pero sin embargo el sonido ambiental es muy fuerte y molesto, haciendo que no te puedas fiar del sonido, todo lo aprendido de otros shooters de guiarte por el sonido aquí no sirve
- la tecla de agacharse para que está? solo para pasar unas pocas secciones como un añadido cutre, nunca se usa, siempre estas A y D para moverte de lateral y disparando
- el arma de pulsos... por dios... tiene caida de balas descomunal, no tiene sentido, parece más bien un lanza granadas pero sin que las granadas exploten, es cutrisimo...
- no hay que recargar armas, tampoco hay retroceso en las armas, por un lado se puede pensar: OKAY, para centrarse más en la acción :D en la acción? cual? en la que tardas media vida en cambiar de arma y solo estas moviendote con WASD y disparando????? que cutre dios
- lo jugué en su máxima dificultad, sale una advertencia, pero aún así es FÁCIL, lo que más me mato fue la lava porque es instant kill si te caes ahí
- el sistema de combos se puede mantener si disparas a los... cuerpos... a quien se le ocurrió esa idea tan absurda y macabra? es que.. en fin...
- no hay avances en el personaje, el sistema de "score" o conseguir dinero en partida no sirve para desbloquear nada

NO COMPRAR, Y NO JUGAR. 0% RECOMENDADO.
Para esto mejor jugar al doom1/2 con algún mod que te de efecto cell-shading, o jugar otra cosa.....
y soy consciente de que estoy reseñando en 2025 un juego de 2014, pero en 2014 ya había shooters muy buenos, este quiso destacar por su apartado gráfico, y ahí se quedo, solo tiene eso de bueno, pero es que tampoco lo hace bien, sus animaciones toscas y feas, sus enemigos repetitivos una y otra vez matar la arañitas mecánica... una y otra vez matar al robot rojo que hace una onda expansiva en el suelo la cual debes saltar.... perderte en un laberinto... buscar la salida, siguiente nivel

Six hours on this game feels like a lifetime. I was glad that it was finally over and I managed to even get through it. The graphics are decent and it runs good. I liked the steam achievements and the art style. The game hits some walls early on though. It is challenging but annoying at the same time. The revive system doesn't make any sense because you can just quick save a lot. The game is story short and not too special. There is no voice acting and the ending leaves you hanging. Just snatch it up at the lowest price you can run through it quickly.

Decent art style, okay soundtrack, mediocre level design, boring gameplay, and boring enemies. This game is BORING. I remember grabbing this by being a fan of Doom and seeing the devs of the Skulltag Doom source port move on to this project along with Bobby Prince working on the soundtrack.

It's easy to say that I was quite disappointed after getting my hands on this. Invest your time and money somewhere else; this game sucks.

С одной стороны идёт упор на динамичность — персонаж двигается быстро, в игре есть система комбо, подразумевающая непрерывные серии убийств с минимальной задержкой. А с другой стороны патроны, аптечки и броня раскиданы вдоль стен, [i]"приклеивая"[/i] вас к ним, или в каких-то местах, до которых непросто добраться. Поэтому уровни проходятся по следующему алгоритму: зашёл в комнату — убил всех — собрал предметы — активировал кнопку — открыл дверь. И по новой. В итоге теряется динамика, и я не представляю, на каком из пройденных уровней можно было бы набить комбо больше 30, если только не запоминать расположение каждого противника. Сами комбо нужны для проведения усиленных выстрелов/атак вашим оружием. Способность эта используется редко, потому что во время набивания комбо все противники оказываются мертвы...
Арсенал в игре небольшой, всего пять пушек. При этом опять встаёт вопрос о динамике боя, так как у самого первого оружия — [b]меча[/b] — такой долгий замах, как будто я играю в РПГ и не вкачал достаточно силу, чтобы бить с нормальной задержкой. Второе оружие — [b]пистолет[/b] — наносит слишком мало урона. В противовес ему есть [b]гранатомёт[/b], но если при вы будете стоять слишком близко или вас ударят и немного подвинут, то при попадании в стенку рядом с вами урон по себе будет весьма внушительным. К третьей пушке — [b]дробовику[/b] — почти нет претензий. И остаётся [b]плазменная винтовка[/b], снарядом которой для чего-то добавили баллистику, вынуждающую вас стрелять "навесом".
Противники тоже не могут похвастать разнообразием — робо-пауки, рептилоиды-стрелки и большие роботы + боссы. К количеству видов противников у меня особо и нет вопросов, как и к дизайну боссов. Меня смущает дизайн уровней, представляющих из себя множество однообразных коридоров. Но не всё так просто: в игре есть платформинг, в том числе на точность. Цена ошибки варьируется: а) из [i]"жидких"[/i] угроз есть кислота и лава. Кислота наносит урон пока вы в ней стоите, а лава убивает мгновенно. б) из [i]"твёрдых"[/i] угроз есть синие и красные шипы. Синие наносят урон при касании, а красные убивают мгновенно. И вот так один неправильный прыжок либо нанесёт немного урона, либо сразу убьёт.
И вот я даже не знаю, как мне относиться к игре. Порог вхождения — терпение к неоднозначности дизайна всех вышеуказанных аспектов. А прохождение тривиального сюжета (хоть и не без юмора) занимает всего 2-3 часа

Современный пионер бумер шутеров ииии... такой скучный.
Просто встань поccaть из-за компа и по дороге до толчка уже забудешь что за игра была такая и зачем в это играть.
Музыка не запомнится, графика однообразная, дизайн уровней не читается и во всём этом теряются не только предметы которые в подобном стиле тупо не видны но и всякая динамика и интерес к игре.
Да ладно мало бумер шутеров?

Short game, completed in about 2.5 hours on medium difficulty. Unfortunately, not much good to say about the game. The art style is nice and the soundtrack is alright, but the gameplay itself is kinda bland. I love boomer shooters, but the AI is just boring and all the enemies look the same, just different colored uniforms to tell you what weapon they have. The bosses were fun to fight, but that's about it. A solid 5/10 experience.

Ok, if you miss old FPS shooters like Doom or Quake, buy this game right away. The levels are exactly like Doom with a Borderlands 2 shader.
The game gets harder after the first 10 minutes, and the combo killing feature makes you run like effin' Forrest Gump with a shotgun. You'll realize you don't even have time to get a decent screenshot because you can't stop shooting. I want more old FPS games like this one.

[h1]This game has so much potential but permanently damages itself in not being coherent.[/h1]

For example, its fast paced and action oriented arcade style combat is done absolutely brilliant and really shines even in 2023, but this doesn't go along well with the level design and placement of enemies.

You have to crawl forward in most cases to avoid being sneak attacked from explosive spiderbots from behind or in angles you cannot see for example when running up a map, also with enemies often having height advantages and often sorrounding you from multiple sides, so you are forced to peek from cover again and again.

Also, there are way too many environmental hazards like poison and lava pits, and later levels featuring crusher walls and mace like orbs, from which the red ones insta-kill you on touch as well as conveyor belts, sometimes mixing up all three of these elements as if the game tries to be a first person plattformer instead of a shooter.

The original Doom, where this game certainly takes a lot of inspiration from had those moments and passages as well, but here they are cranked up to eleven, totally beating the purpose of fast paced action combat.

To add insult to injury, the game also offers only limited lives, though you can earn extra lives by scoring enough points, with most bosses are trial and error these go down rather quickly and if you have to continue after losing all your lives you have to start the level all over again.

Which wouldn't be so bad, but even with lives left, deaths are an annoying penalty by checkpoints being far too stretched out with many, many, many combats in between, and to avoid that you usually better rely on not getting those secrets that include jumping over lava pits or death orbs, which both instantly kill you on touch, so all incentive of exploration is pretty quick lost as well.

The games saving graces though are the aforementioned fast paced arcade action combat as well as for its time really pretty cel shading graphics.
It's just that the combat doesn't really get much opportunity to shine.

In my opinion, scrapping the life system, a few more checkpoints as well as less focus on enviromental hazards could have made this game really great.

As it is though, fatal design flaws making it its own worst enemy.

A rather disappointing game.

While I bought Wrack a while ago, it didn't run on my old machine. Now with a new graphics card and renewed vigour I sought to play it once more.

Unfortunately, Wrack has not aged well. Today there are several wonderful acrade-y combo shooters out there, and Wrack just feels clunky and lethargic. While you can run at the speed of a bullet train, your guns fire slow, reload slower, and lock you out from weapon switching.

The combos themselves are punishing and disappointing. Not because they're hard to get, but because a single slip makes you lose all of your progress, and the benefit for a full combo is that you can throw it all away for one big attack and then start over at the bottom once more.

I didn't finish the game, but from my reading the story was never finished. You are buying five levels. Well crafted doom-style levels that aren't short, but put together they certainly aren't long either.

The art style is nice, the gun and enemy design is pretty good. I like the comic cutscenes, even if they are cheesy, it's a good sort of cheese.

Unfortunately, I just didn't have any fun playing the actual game, so I cannot recommend it. Spend your money on the other, more modern arcade shooters. There's plenty out there.

Had this title in my line of sight for years.
Ended up buying it a couple of years ago and finally decided to play it.

+Good mix of Doom/Quake/Half-Life vibes
+Nice looking cell shaded style

I'm surprised Steam is letting me review a game I refunded 8 years ago, but I digress. Before "boomer shooter" was a term proper, we had countless misinformed attempts like Wrack. The skeleton of a classic FPS game is there, but the skin hasn't fully formed yet. The guns feel weak, the music is lame, the art style is half-committed cel shading - even if the arcadey mechanics are decently implemented, the whole expirience feels like weaksauce.

Ancak oyunun sığ atmosferi ve mekanları, az düşman çeşitliliği, kötü boss savaşları, "eh işte" denebilecek harita tasarımı ve kötü düşman dizilimleri oyunu gözümden düşürdü. Eğer benim gibi retro fps oyunlarını seven birisiyseniz sevebilirsiniz oyunu, ancak sadece oyunun görsellerine bakıp verdiği çizgi roman havasından dolayı almayı düşünüyorsanız... Pek tavsiye edemeyeceğim sizlere. Yine de uygun fiyatıyla "neden olmasın" dedirtiyor. Malum 500ml su bile bazı yerlerde 4 TL olmuş, oyun 3.60 TL'ye düşüyor. Bir bakmaktan da zarar gelmez. Ancak genel olarak herkese tavsiye edebileceğim bir oyun da değil.

An ok, classic, boomer shooter, with a combo and finisher moves mechanic that makes the gameplay really dynamic and intense. I felt it a little uninspired but I had some good fun. It's really short, it's just the first episode of the game so it ends kind of abruptly, but the concept is great and if you REALLY liked it, you have lots of replayability.

- repetitive gameplay with a severe lack of challenge, mainly as a result of the incredibly stupid enemy AI, plentiful pickups and general lack of variety

- a combo/scoring system which offers no conceivable benefits
- an annoying and unneeded lives-system
- terrible soundtrack
- can be completed in less than two hours

Once upon a time in a distant future, aliens invade the Earth and it's up to our hero [b]Kain[/b] to save the day. There's some more backstory, but it feels kind of unimportant. The story is delivered by text and comics-like illustrations shown between missions. Usually it's just some dialogue between the main character, his friend and his love interest filled with jokes, with most of them being not funny. I think it's pretty clear that the story is not the focus of this game.

[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
The focus of [b]Wrack[/b] is gameplay. It's a fast-paced shooter, that it will instantly remind you of games like [b]Quake[/b] and [b]DOOM[/b], the old one, obviously. Just like in the old times, your movement speed is very fast. There's always a huge amount of enemies shooting at you at the same time, and most of them shoot projectiles that can be avoided. There's even a satisfying shotgun that will be your most used weapon throughout the game. Levels are big, with lots of well-hidden secrets. The game doesn't have a map, but levels are easy to navigate because of how well they're designed. Moreover, the game features a couple of boss levels, which are fun due to each boss requiring slightly different tactics. It also introduces a unique mechanic of kill streaks. If you kill enough enemies in a short amount of time, you can perform a special attack, which is different for each weapon and its strength depends on how long your killstreak was.

Sadly, the game falls short compared to its sources of inspiration. First of all, what bugged me for the entirety of the game is the time between shots. It takes about two seconds to reload a shotgun, which means two seconds of running around and doing nothing. It seems kind of strange that the gun is so slow when everything else is so fast. Another problem, the arsenal of guns is tiny, there are: a sword, a pistol, a shotgun, a plasmagun and a rocketgun. To make it seem even smaller, the pistol is basically useless after the 1st level. The damage is very low and there's always a plenty of ammo for other guns. There's also the problem of enemy variety. First, there are crawling bugs that will either bite you or blow up near you. Second, there are aliens that will shoot you with different weapons. Third, flying robots that shoot you from above. Fourth, robots that smash the ground, dealing huge amount of damage to anything standing on the ground in front of them. Those four types of enemies do require different tactics and are fun to fight with. However, most weapons and enemy types are introduced early into the game, making each subsequent level feel more of the same. The last couple of levels are also plagued by instant death traps, that make levels feel very frustrating.

[h1]Graphics & Audio[/h1]
The visuals are mostly ok. The comics-style graphics are a good way to make your game feel ageless. However, I didn't quite like the animation. Especially on the alien enemies. Their walking animations look a really stiff. It feels like they're floating above the ground rather than walking on it. It's also hard to determine whether they started their dying animation or they're just reacting to being shot at. The soundtrack is ok. It's the kind of music that fits the action on screen, but you can't imagine yourself listening to it after you've finished playing.

Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 8GB, 32GB RAM.

The game runs on high settings, at 1080p resolution at a steady 144 FPS. There are no technical issues whatsoever.

[b]Wrack[/b] is an old-school shooter with a fun fast-paced gameplay, which is bogged down by a low variety of weapons and enemies, unpolished ideas and instant death traps that turn the challenge into frustration. Pick it up only if you're a fan of those old school games and want to try something similar but different.

Extremely boring game. It's one of those games where you play the first and second level and it looks promising. But then you realize there is little to anything different in the later levels. I guess my biggest pet peeve is the mundane and highly boring level design. The encounters are just so boring. Yawn!

Wrack was a great game that came out too early. Plain and simple. Doom 2016 didn’t start the resurgence of the genre quite yet, and people didn’t know they wanted it. Wrack is an amazing game, with an incredible soundtrack. Some people may consider it generic by today's standards, but it stuck to a formula that was popular years prior, and it worked. You get tons of guns, to kill tons of bad guys, through a decently sized campaign. The fact that there are zero hitscan enemies is a bonus, and gives the game a slight “bullet hell” feel, especially the boss fights. The final boss being the most prevalent to this, which felt more like an exercise in memorization and chance, and was a strange leap in difficulty compared to the rest of the game.
It’s also worth noting the game DOES have a level creator, and people have made some amazing levels. One in particular was a full remake of the original Doom inside Wrack. There’s a lot to like here. The game does feature a combo system, where the more kills you get, the more it charges a special meter, to use your weapons alternate fire. This is definitely a cool and unique feature, although on hardcore difficulty, the meter drains so fast I was only able to use it a handful of times. All in all, I enjoyed my time with Wrack, mostly in part due to its quick gunplay, and bangin’ soundtrack. And with a well saturated level creator, you can get a lot of mileage out of this charming game

Wrack is definitely a nice tribute to the good old first person shooters from the 90’s era. One can find many pros there like the frenetic non-stop action, sense of humor, the weapons effect, kill chains, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, responsive controls and beautiful cell shaded graphics. The game could be much better though if there were not some downsides like uninspiring story, generic level design, low variety of enemies and weapons and the absence of dubbing. First person shooters are usually not the best genre for family playing but thanks to the cell shaded graphics without the explicit graphical violence I think that the game can be played by let’s say 10+ years old kids.

I didn't play Doom or any other 90s shooters when I was a kid, so I don't have nostalgia for this kind of game. You run around like the Flash on an ice rink and blast your shotgun at anything that moves. So far, so okay.

The guns feel wimpy, the enemies are dumb as rocks, the boss fights are the easiest part of the game, all the environments look the same, and the story is the bad kind of campy.

Нам представлена сюжетная кампания, все катсцены в ней являются интересно нарисованными комиксами. К слову о кампании, она довольно короткая, прошел я её за чуть более двух часов.
Дизайн мне чем-то напомнил Borderlands, но более низкополигональный.
Присутствует мастерская Стим, где есть немало интересных уровней и сборников.
Отдельно хочется упомянуть очень крутой саундтрек, который написал не кто-то, а сам Bobby Prince, который давным давно написал все саундтреки первого и второго Дума, а также Wolfenstein 3D.
Одним словом добротный продукт. Если вам нравится большая динамика олдскула, вам сюда.

I think the Metacritic score is right on the money with this one. Its a solid 6/10. Its got the gameplay down and the boss fights were cool. The length was pretty pitiful. It seems like it was abandoned a third of the way through in 2014 so I doubt thats going to be resolved any time soon...shame that.

Simple but neat short shooter game. Has a very old school doom-like feel to it. You can combo kills to use special abilities and the stages are quick and fun. The comic book art style ties the story together nicely. Not a bad little shooter game!

half an hour in and it's just not fun.
unless you can live with the insane camera shake, most weapons don't feel punchy or satisfying to use.
Enemies are animated goofily, have net-zero pathfinding & about two shared brain-cells among all of them.
the combo-counter often drowns out most other noise & makes the game sound like the game has a pinball-hitmarker.

A long time ago the guy behind Skulltag wanted to break out on his own to make his own game and this is what we got. While the art style was neat, I felt like the movement wasn't crisp and the level design was heavily lacking. Not only that, but the weapons didn't feel too great to use. I'm surprised this game even got finished. Chances are, had CarnEvil waited a few more years to start working on this game and time it with the whole boomer shooter trend, it wouldn't have done too badly and I'm sure this game would have been much higher quality than it is in its current state. If you want to buy a boomer shooter, choose anything else but this.

Un bon jeu mais =

- Durée de vie hyper courte (3h pour en venir à bout si on s'attarde moyennement sur la recherche de secrets) ;
- Peu d'armes, bien que j'ai trouvé le feeling relativement bon ;
- Peu de variété d'ennemis.

En fait, j'ai juste eu l'impression de jouer à un premier épisode de DOOM. Une fois le dernier boss tué, je me suis dis "allez, la suite maintenant, je sens que ça va envoyer !!!" et là j'ai vu les crédits s'afficher et ce fut une décéption.

Alors ok, ils mettent en avant le fait qu'il y ait un workshop avec des niveaux customs, mais jouer à des niveaux pourris ça m'intéresse moyennement.

Sinon, côté graphismes, le Cell Shading est vraiment bien foutu, les niveaux sont cool, les boss nécessitent d'apprendre leurs patterns (bourriner ne suffit pas et vous vous ferez rouler dessus), et je ne me suis vraiment pas ennuyé en jouant.

Je recommande ce jeu, mais plutôt en promo, à cause de la durée de vie.

A fast paced, kill counting FPS where you chain together combos to power up your ALT fire on each weapon, this gives you significant points to your overall score as you play the Campaign.. if you can call this a Campaign, i will explain.

I honestly loved the first level and boss, i figured this would be similar to the FPS games of old but i was sadly mistaken and let down.. the beginning feels right but then you realise that every LEVEL Looks the exact same.. the enemies are boring, dumb and limited.. there are maybe 4 enemy types in the game

mechanical spiders (They used way to many of these)
soldier units that shoot
flying drone units
and lastly large crusher units

that is very limited and makes the game boring.. now for the serious things i hated...

you get 5 guns.. are you Serious.. 5?
a hyperblade (sword) which has a crazy animation..
a really sh*tty pistol
a shotgun which you will use all the time
a plasma rifle that never has any ammo and always runs out
a rocket launcher which you get at the end of the game...

a FPS with 5 guns is pretty bad regardless of the quality of the game play, i will admit that it is still fun fast paced shooting similar to DOOM but with none of the love, the boss's are all very Odd and Sh*t to fight to be very honest.

I am very good at these types of games and i still died all the time on the dumbest things, i must have wanted to rage quit multiple times.. the very worst sin was adding these stupid RED SPIKED DEATH ORBS.. you F*cking touch them once your automatically dead, who thought of this.. so stupid, the controls are also a bit floaty so its hard to avoid...

My last complaint is the secrets and treasure... i don't know what the developer was thinking but finding how to open certain areas and unlock doors to get the treasure was crazy hard, i spent 20 mins on 1 level trying to open a door and did everything.. nothing was working.. there are also cash deposits in areas you cant reach.. tried everything there as well.

This was the first FPS ever to wear me out.. really was bad in some areas and the 5 weapons was probably my biggest issue with it.. that and every level looks the exact same..

I beat it though...

Wrack is a 'retro FPS', in that it's fast, the weapons and controls are simple, and there's barely any plot. What plot that exists is charming in its bad saturday-morning cheesiness, but for the most part you shoot things, they die or explode, and you get more guns to shoot more things. It definitely feels like a DOOM clone, and if that's what you're looking for it's great at giving you a lot of content and a lot of fun. The guns feel a little anemic and I found the kill-chain system bland, but the game is expansive and well-made(excepting for some audio bugs)

It's priced competitively for the amount of content you get.

Before getting into Wrack, it should be noted of what kind of experience you want out of it. There are five difficulties to choose from, Cakewalk, Casual, Medium, Hardcore and BS. For this review, I'll touch on Medium and Hardcore. Medium plays out like a standard retro inspired FPS, with quick saving and loading. Hardcore is the same as Medium, but you have to rely on checkpoints, auto saves and lives when you die.

Personally, I found the game to be really challenging on Medium as is. So I personally don't see much of a reason to play on Hardcore, let alone BS. Aside from that, this is a standard but good retro inspired FPS, which is fine. It doesn't "have" to reach Amid Evil, Dusk or Ion Fury levels of good to be, well, good.

A decent arcade FPS curtailed by a severe lack of content. Wrack needs a greater number and variety of levels, weapons and enemies. The gameplay, visuals and soundtrack are all good and their combination often provides thrilling moments throughout the experience but no more than the most tepid recommendation demands.

This will keep you entertained for a weekend.

Судя по скринам, я думал что эта игра в стиле Duke Nukem или просто веселый рогалик шутер, но на деле это оказался очень посредственный кривой шутан. Что-то типа Quiver 1997го года, который кривовато копировал Doom.
Стрельба не вызывает удовольствия, мяса - считайте что нет.
Взмах меча это вообще что-то - ктож так делает в динамичных шутерах? )
Враги какие-то абсурдные и не интересные. Первый босс в стиле какого-то анимэ, который даже минимальной угрозы не способен продемонстрировать.
Дизайн уровней скучный.
На втором уровне - Гори в аду тот кто сделал лаву внизу и какой-то скользкий пол и враги тебя еще дамагом толкают. Это чо Дарк Соулс чтоле? ))))
а еще эта издевательская надоедливая фраза после смерти - просто ужас.

Даже за 10 руб не советую брать. Возьмите лучше PRODEUS или DUSK? если олдфажного чего-то хотите.

Wrack orientiert sich an OldSchool FPS Shooters aus dem 90's und das kann man sehen und fühlen. Mit dem extra der Combos wodurch es pro Kill erhöht wird, kassiert man mehr Highsocre Punkte um mehr Leben oder sein Punktstand zu steigen. Apropos Leben: Sterbt ihr, verliert ihr ein Leben! Wie ein Oldschool Game eben.

It's a fun and fast paced FPS throwback. I enjoy the hell out of all the twitch shooting and level layouts. The enemies are all quite fun and have their own set of challenges to fight against. It's colorful and it feels great to shoot. The sound effects are on point and the music is fun an frantic as well when it needs to be. Big recommend to any FPS fans.

Не ведитесь на эту яркую графику и динамику, игра деревянная донельзя. Модам на классический Дум это простительно, инди 2014 года уже нет

Old school shooter redone, pretty fun, gets most stuff right. It is very old school DooM, except for the saves are auto or by area, you can't just save anywhere, which is a bit of a pain. Imagine a sort of robots and aliens old DooM and that's pretty close.

Looks good, guns are good. I don't think they ever finished this, but it does have one whole section done. The level design is pretty solid. If you are a fan of old school games this is pretty close and it looks nice, sort of DooM in a simplified Borderlands style. And there is at least some workshop stuff to play. I'd recommend; I got it on sale and I'm happy with it.

I was hoping to like Wrack based on it's art style but it really doesn't have much going for it. While the gunplay works fine it doesn't have a punch to it. The characters and story are bland and boring but the art style is different. Also the enemy AI is way too simple and the bosses aren't challenging.

I was very pissed off at this game..
There's one level where I'm stuck and after going round and round the same level for 10x.
I give up and uninstalled the game.
Doesn't help there is no full gameplay walkthrough for this game.
But playing this game for more 2 hours, you don't miss much as the gameplay is repetitive and
even the old pixelated doom is more fun than this game.
There's better shooter out there.
Only redeeming feature of this game is the art style.

Grab this on sale if you're a completionist type.

The game itself is great. It's polished, fun, challenging, and interesting to explore. The main issue is that it is only one episode long - the promises of two more episodes were never fulfilled, despite the game leaving early access at one point. In other words, it is unfinished and abandoned.

However, I still felt like there's enough content (and very challenging achievements) to have much fun with this game - at least if you buy it at a significant discount. The one episode that is included is done very well. Probably not worth it if you just want to check out the levels and forget about it, but attaining 100% completion is a solid challenge.

If you like old-school shooters, Wrack is worth trying if you can get it on sale. On the positive side, it's competent in most of the places it needs to be. On the negative, it's not equal to a lot of games far older than it; this is a fairly short arcade arena FPS with almost no story, few weapons, and repetitive enemies and environments.

Movement is fast, however I felt the timing on the jump was slightly off and jumping in general could stand to be a little more floaty. One of the main goals of the game is to build combos by killing enemies quickly enough, and this is where the arcade feel is strongest. Older FPS games like Doom or Quake were fast and fluid, but not arcadey in the same sense that the gameplay focus in Wrack is.

Saving is a little odd; you've got checkpoints which are pretty far apart and one quicksave slot. The quicksave makes things a lot easier, especially boss fights, which are fairly long and use attacks that can be tricky to predict. See, the game has a life system to go with the checkpoints, which the quicksave makes pointless. To counteract this, on difficulties above medium the quicksave works like it would in a roguelike, so it only saves and quits to the title screen--no loading apart from continuing your game. At least you can get more lives by scoring enough points.

Graphics are fine for what they are, I think the cel-shaded style helps set the game apart from other indie FPS. The shading here is closer to the original XIII game than Borderlands, and the chunky look and simple textures complement the weapons and enemy models.

On the audio front, music and sounds are done by Bobby Prince, pretty much The Man of old school FPS soundtracks, if you're not familiar with him. Music is fast and heavy, with weapons sounding suitably punchy (apart from the sword), which is something a lot of shooters tend to neglect.

All the cutscenes in Wrack are done in comic book style stills, and I can't say I care about them at all. The plot is pointless and the writing fails to be funny or interesting (which hardly matters in an arcade FPS), but the commentary during loading screens is pretty well written.

The game took me around 5 hours to beat, although there are plenty of achievements if you like that kind of thing. There's also a score attack mode, a level editor, and Steam Workshop levels. However, given the game's length, I feel like it's worth more in the range of $5 or less, so get it on sale if you buy.

Protip: disable "camera movement" in the settings to stop the screen from bobbing when using the sword; it makes things a lot less disorienting.

1. Movement is fast and smooth, ruined by instant-death lava so you don't wanna take chances.

A very sympathetic shooter.
It suffers from a shallow presentation (cut scenes, musics and character design are below average)
and the gunplay could have been more punchy but otherwise it's pretty cool.

If you like old school shooters like Brutal Doom you should enjoy this one.

Wrack is a very familiar tale: an early access game released onto the Steam store with promises of upcoming features and levels. Promises unfulfilled.

To be fair to the developer (and to their credit) they do frequently interact with the community on the steam forums (check your 'discussions' tab). According to them, demand for the game just wasn't there, and whilst early access funding helped get the game to where it is now, it wasn't enough to get it to the promised 'upcoming episodes' the ending of the game tells you of. I understand, and wouldn't fault someone for throwing more money into a pit.

With that said, I'd also have to be fair to the game itself and judge it not on sympathies but on legitimate merit. And on the positive side, what was released held promise. Based on presentation (art direction and in-game graphics), Wrack has a unique blend of neon and comic book aesthetics. The music, whilst unmemorable, is serviceable. And the movement in-game is nimble and responsive. It's not a bad start. I can see why the developer thought it prudent to release something this early to rack up cash.

The negatives would apply to any game released this early. The game has 5 different enemy types, with two being palette swaps of existing enemies with slightly different attacks. The enemies themselves are harmless and tutorial fodder. The only legitimate threat are the spider palette swaps, which blow up if they're near you. Even then, they move just as slow as every other enemy and are only threats in swarms.

The animations are really janky. It's really weird; you're moving at a nimble pace but the enemies themselves [i]look[/i] like they're jogging but their move speed is as if they're [i]walking slowly[/i]. I could reasonably say that these might have been place holder enemies. They rarely attack, and they barely move. The animations, at least, seem to be unfinished.

Some of the positive reviews make mention of classic 90's shooters. Wrack is not a classic 90's shooter, it's not even close. To its credit it has some similar level design features (complexity in maps), which I do appreciate (but are not exclusively 90's). But beyond that there's just not enough actual content to even make that statement. People need to stop thinking that just because you can move fast it's suddenly Doom. Doom was defined by a lot more than just moving quickly.

I won't stretch this review further than need be since there's not much to speak of: Wrack is an unfinished game and what is here is a decent start (could still use work), but you're basically paying for a tutorial. The developer has stated that they learned a few lessons about tempering ambitions in indie titles. I appreciate the transparency. But I'll also be transparent and say that this game is really not worth any sort of purchase. Hard pass.
