As big fans of those games we were disappointed to find that nothing in this genre was available on current generation platforms and set out to fill the gap ourselves. Wargroove aims to recreate the charm and accessibility of the titles that inspired it whilst bringing modern technology into the formula. This modern focus allows for higher resolution pixel art, robust online play and deep modding capability, ultimately creating the most complete experience for Advance Wars and TBS fans.

I’ve never played Advanced Wars, but I’ve seen a few negative comparisons between it and Wargroove. As much as I’m skeptical of the nostalgic tint to the comparative praise for Advance Wars, just looking at a longplay I can see a few things in its favor. Its peppier soundtrack is far more enjoyable, even in the GBA soundfont, and the speed of play feels quicker and smoother than Wargroove, which often begs you to use the fast-forward/skip button. I also didn’t get a feel for Advanced Wars’ story, but Wargroove just isn’t compelling. Meet a bunch of characters from a bunch of different countries, bring them together, stop the big evil. That’s pretty much it. You might get a bit more out of these characters if you play the side missions or the arcade mode, but I just find the writing to be too paint-by-numbers.

I wouldn’t count out Wargroove, though. The pixel graphics are appealing, even if the portraits look kind of funky (those noses, ugh). The sprite animation contributes a bit to the speed of play issue I mentioned, but it looks and feels good. I prefer to move the battles along, but I can’t help but stop every so often to watch a trebuchet or dragon blast away another unit at full health, or to watch a commander deliver a retaliation killshot.

I also really like the health mechanics. Health contributes to attack power, so you don’t have to kill a unit to neutralize their threat. Retaliatory strikes give you pause to consider whether you’re making the best use of your units. At the same time, bases also have health that need to be guarded, but can also be redistributed to units. Capturing a town just to have it torn down again might be frustrating for some, but for me, I understand that I need control of the area. I’m also depriving the opponent of another move with one of their units, if they want to clear/recapture it. There are a lot of options, and it looks way better than the squatting you appear to need to do in Advance Wars, but again, I can’t speak to how AW feels in practice.

Some battles get a bit busy and frustrating. I sometimes wish there was a movement heat map so that I didn’t have to count how many enemy units can reach one square. The majority of my resets were from letting my commander get ganged up on rather than the actual tide of battle. I also don’t like how any unused unit or barracks will prevent the turn from ending automatically. It can be hard to spot unused units, but even if I’ve used every unit and can’t afford to recruit anything, I still have to end the turn manually if the barracks haven’t recruited a unit that turn. Finally, the last level of the main game is pretty annoying. You can’t let a single unit die, and it took me several retries over a few hours to clear. The map is so small, yet it feels like such a slog until you’ve finally threaded the needle.

Wargroove isn’t perfect. There are several things which I would hope have been improved in the sequel. Still, the battles are more fun than a bore, and there are plenty of engaging game modes for singleplayer and multiplayer experiences.

I'm giving a very luke-warm thumbs up here. This is basically Advance Wars done up in fantasy instead of technology. Each unit has 10 HP (like in AW), and the unit selection is nearly identical, they just name them other things.

The biggest problem with this game is lack of information. You don't know if a unit is ranged or combat or ground-to-air without using it. There are no tooltips which tell that, nor can you get detailed info about a commander's power...again, until they use it on you. You essentially have to create crap units, join a battle, push into combat, and see what happens and learn from that. There's really no justification for creating a game which has as it's core loop tactical combat and then not giving tactical information.

The game lacks polish and quality-of-life information which is, bluntly, a no-brainer. Nevertheless, it IS a cute game and the engine is good. The graphics and gameplay are clean, and the music is acceptable. They just need to add a lot of patches. For now, I'm giving it a half-hearted 2.8 out of 5. It's above the line of thumbs up/thumbs down, but only barely.

Fine game. Fun battle animations for the kids, though I turn them off so I can get further. Hardly any randomness, it is much more like chess and paper rock scissors if you are looking for traditional games to compare it to. My whole family from the five year old up to their old father have enjoyed it among those who like those kind of games. It also has a scenario editor, but I haven't done much with that.

Initially was thrilled to do this game for doing turned based tactics, I wouldn't recommend this game at full price though. It felt more like a chore not in a thinking capacity but mindless repetition if because I didn't find myself caring for the story and there wasn't really incentive to do s rank clears since it seemed the same regardless.

在此基础上该作加入了很多独特的机制,比如己方建筑会反击前来偷家的敌方单位,通过在关键时机释放技能而以一己之力改变战局的英雄单位,以及各个兵种间更为明确有效的克制关系等。而其中最让我眼前一亮的是每个兵种都有其特有的暴击条件,相比于传统的概率式触发的暴击,这样的设计在消除了运气成分对于战场影响的同时,也让玩家为了最大化攻击的收益而需要去仔细布局每个单位在每回合里的走位和布局
战役的地图都能看出设计上的巧思,很多地形的卡位使得想要追求S评价时的容错很低
此外像素的画风也很可爱,过场动画中配合应景的表情和夸张的肢体动作看着非常欢乐

Pretty fun! As a tactics game the pace is pretty slow, it takes a long time to complete missions and even longer if you need to try again. But there's a lot to do, I particularly liked the puzzle mode and playing some of the silly user-created campaigns. At one point a co-op campaign was added for free, which was very kind! I'd recommend the game overall.

Os gráficos são lindos, porém a game player nem um pouco cativante. Daria uma nota 3/10.
Um bom índice pra saber se o jogo é fora da curva realmente é olhar a conquista de completar o último ato, e , neste jogo, somente 5,2% dos jogadores chegaram a concluir a história principal (isso já fala bastante). Ou seja, se está empolgado pelos gráficos, sinto te dizer que o jogo somente tem isso.

Unfortunately, I just don't think this game is for me. I really wanted to like it, but after finishing Act 2 I just didn't have any interest in playing further. Unless if you REALLY like long strategy games, I would not recommend this to most people.

Now, I do really like how the art is done and the sound design is pretty good. The dialogue and story is pretty basic but that's not really the main pull of this game. I feel as though the missions for the main campaign are just too basic for how long they take to complete. The pacing is just too slow for me to get enjoyment out of playing this game. I think being able to use at least two different commanders at once in the story would really help with the pacing and would make sense since in every cutscene there's at least three of them chatting with one another.

Overall, I would give this game a 5/10.

Very little actual strategy, more like a puzzle game. Most of the campaign missions are just you, with very limited resources, fighting excessive unit spam (clearly the devs thought up *their* way of completing a mission and that's it). I had no interest in 'S-ranking' any of the missions, because good strategy isn't about speedrunning. Got bored about halfway through the campaign and couldn't be bothered to carry on.

Enemy AI is ALWAYS smarter than you, ALWAYS better prepared than you, ALWAYS gets more opportunities for resources than you and CHEATS by being able to see through fog of war while you sit there malding at the 700 units that come charging through the trees because THEY get to see and YOU DON'T. ♥♥♥♥ this game. If you like Advance Wars, you'll like Wargroove. It's basically Wars with a medieval fantasy theme instead of a modern one. Most of the units (and countries) have approximate counterparts in Wars.

Solid enough Advance Wars clone. I haven't played a ton of Advance Wars though.

Visual style is appealing enough. Art's good, game's colorful, and units are easily identifiable (except in the codex damage matrix but that's a minor annoyance). The story mode is fine overall. There's main missions and side missions. Nothing was all that memorable or blew me away, both in gameplay or story but it was enjoyable and engaging. The writing is kind of crap, honestly. It feels kind of like a hipster D&D roleplay campaign. The story itself feels incredibly uninspired, which wouldn't be a problem if it didn't feel like it expects you to care about it or its characters. The word 'lame' keeps coming to mind. Others might call it 'corny.' The side missions with the dog commander Caesar lean really hard into the "UwU good dog is good boy so magestick" schtick with the enemies leaning harder into "stupid dog being so magestic and fluffy >:( " dialogue. Look man, I like dogs but try a little harder. I've seen cooler dogs and less cool dogs who are gooder boys and those stories don't try to ride their red rocket like this game does. He is fun to play as at least, and his missions are some of the more interesting side missions so there's that. This tangent kind of reflects what I'm talking about with the story expecting you to care too much about it's characters. They're all bog-standard but it acts like they're all super cool and you should really like them because uh... just because.

The puzzles were fun. I beat all of them. Spent a good while racking my brain on some of them. I do appreciate that they understand the distinction between a puzzle and a strategy game, giving you separate modes for both. Nothing else to say about them. There's also an 'arcade' mode, which is presented like an old arcade game where the characters have some random dialogue about why they're about to fight but it doesn't matter so you just fight. Extra levels, interesting maps, just more stuff to play. Good times.

There's a co-op campaign I haven't gotten around to yet. Looks like there's extra characters or something? Looking forward to that, seems like you can play it by yourself if you really want. That's the great thing about this game, there's no shortage of stuff to play. It's only the writing/characters that will leave you starved, which probably isn't a big deal for what kind of game this is.

Good gameplay, lots to do, lots to play. Doubly recommended if you're looking for something to play on your Steam Deck or a laptop. Lends itself well to being played on a break or while travelling, or just on your couch or in your bed or something.

Played this game on the gamepass, than played the second on the gamepass too and I thought the second one, was so so boring, now someone got me the game on steam, and I had to try it to see if I maybe just didnt like this series or type of game anymore, but no, still a nice good feeling, straight engaged again, much better than the second game, which for me was so boring I couldnt get passed the first levels even.

It might not be the best game ever, but its fun and engaging enough, with some difficulty spikes here and there, but nothing too bad, its normal to have this kind of levels in these games.

at its core, wargroove is a decent strategy game. strongly inspired by advance wars (and SRPGs at large), you get the classics like weaknesses and resistances, chokepoint management, etc. on top of that, you get the mechanics inspired from advance wars : COs with their own powers, building capture, unit spawning mid-battle and so on.

with that solid foundation, wargroove also has some pretty decent pixel visuals to go with it. the soundtrack is equally pleasant and a good companion throughout the game. unfortunately, the story is nothing to write home about. not *terrible*, but unremarkable for sure.

however, even considering the above, wargroove's campaign - the main attraction of any SRPG - is a chore to get through. this is something i can fully fault wargroove for, because a lot of SRPGs struggle with this, but the main problem is the maps are too big. most units barely have any movement range or when they do, that usually comes with massive caveats. for instance, flying units move fast and over terrain, but are still rather frail! siege units do a lot of damage but cannot attack the same turn they move!

unless you turn down the difficulty, no specific unit will carry you through the game or make up for the large maps. this makes sense, classic SRPG fare, even advance wars didn't do that! you have to consider units strengths and weaknesses! but the charm of advance wars was also that unless you were in some ultra late campaign maps, the size was reasonable, so the pace and length of battles felt much better. this coupled with the fact that you can get maps where units spawn a *massive* amount of units, whether naturally or through reinforcements, means that maps become a slog quickly.

i got halfway through the game and i did not want to play more. it also doesn't help that it feels like every campaign map is meant to be played a certain way, rather than letting you coast along and figure it out yourself.

i realize that this sounds overly negative, but if you are the kind of person that likes when games take a long time to figure out each map, or you like to crank up the difficulty, this is more than up your alley. that combined with the new free co-op campaign they added after release, the trove of custom content players have made and the online multiplayer makes it more than worth it. i just could not personally stomach to finish the whole campaign.

Fun tactics based game. Wargroove has nice quality pixel art and music. Story and characters are silly, but pretty basic. Gameplay is fun, but simple. I am more fan of RTS games and slower turn based gameplay was not for me. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who is fan of this genre.

This game's based on the Advanced Wars game series.

This said game was well thought out, was decently balanced, had decent graphics for its time (GBA), and was fun.
Wargroove is pretty much the same game, with a fantasy-like dress up (they ripped off 80% of the features from AW, leaving them with 20% to actually put their own touch to it.

Now, an average person, taking a finished, decent work, and writing their own name as if it were theirs. You would imagine they would use this 20% they kept for themselves and try to fix what they thought was not optimal or even not good in their source material, right?
Not Chucklefish, they literally mishot everything they touched (like an inverted Midas of some king).

I will first state the most important, in my opinion:

-Advanced Wars had FOW (Fog of War), AI had truesight (it could see the map as FOW was not there), but even so, the game kept rules of engagement. E.G: If a unit is in a forest tile, it could only be engaged if another unit was adjacent to it. The AI knew you were there, but couldn't just snipe you unless another unit was there to check you out - Pretty smart, right? They kept the illusion that the AI couldn't see you through carefully thought-out rules and programming, guaranteeing the slight needed advantage to AI.
This alone makes AW a legend for me, guaranteed hours of fun in 4player maps against 3 AIs in FOW. It was not perfect, but pretty decent.

Now, Chucklefish did not even give themselves the trouble, making hours of fun into a half-assed handicap for the player who wants an extra challenge. The AI will snipe your ass without worry, destroying the whole mode and, personally, for me, the game.
This Alone would be enough to refund, it's a shame I cannot.

Other inverted-Midas gems Chucklefish touched:

- Way worse capture and defend base mechanics
- The commander unit is bad and easy to exploit
- Extreme counter-intuitive and punishing menus E.G: you will see a 2-hour run in Arcade goes bye-bye because you press 'continue' instead of 'retry' (no 'Are you sure?', or 'You will lose all your progress'), only a big GFY in your face.
- Specials are totally unbalanced E.G: A gem that gives +1 defence in a small stationary area (targetable) or a unit that can virtually insta-kill everything that reached 35% health near it. Umm.. hard to decide. lol

I could go on and on to almost all Chucklefish tried to 'innovate' in their version of Advanced Wars.

Resume: Avoid at all costs, don't spend your hard (or otherwise) money here, not worth it.
Instead, play GBA's Advanced Wars for a much superior experience.

Игра хорошая, с детства мечтал купить и собрать все достяги. Проблемы возникали повсюду, то в миссии "Кто такой цезарь?" за победу на 11 ходу мне дали А ранг (хотя для S ранга нужно победить за 25 и менее ходов) то с онлайном некоторые конфликты из за запретов и таких программ. А так все хорошо, приятно рубится в любимую статерию.

My goal in 2026 is to give up on games more easily. If a game isn't interesting to me in 2 hours then it's likely not something I'm going to pursue further. It may still be 2025 but Wargroove is the first casualty of this philosophy.

At some point I bought this, maybe it was a bundle or maybe it was super cheap. I'm not sure. Last week I decided to give it a go, and went in completely blind. After 2 hours I am calling it quits. It very much is inspired by Advance Wars, which is a game that I enjoyed as a youth, and didn't enjoy much as an adult, so it makes perfect sense that I would bounce off of this pretty quick.

After 2 hours I do not find the combat or tactics of it all to be interesting. The combat is basically a rock, paper, scissors, of faceless units that offer nothing interesting to them. The usefulness of each unit is extremely surface level, something that I can forgive in a portable game from 25 years ago, but it makes for a very boring experience now.

I found my experience to be very hand-holding and the tacked on story wasn't compelling in any capacity. So with the gameplay and story being uninteresting to me I am calling it quits.

It feels like an Advance Wars clone in a different setting, and that comes with all of the good and the bad.

E' sostanzialmente un copia incolla di Advance Wars con qualche richiamo a Fire Emblem. Divertente ma anche MOLTO difficile, sappiatelo. Alcune missioni sono quasi frustranti e richiedono davvero una pianificazione molto fine. Ma per chi piace il genere è molto bello.

EDIT: La missione secondaria 1 del terzo atto è qualcosa con una difficoltà fuori parametro. La mia valutazione di questo titolo comincia ad abbassarsi.

I don't know where I got this game from, but honestly - don't buy it. Couldn't even get past the tutorial stages as the game and controls are hella annoying. They could've at least streamlined things and/or allow you to remap controls/actions to your liking. Seriously, it's not worth the money at all.

Wargroove is a great turn-based strategy game. It’s very clearly inspired by Advance Wars, with even a little bit of Fire Emblem thanks to the commanders. They give the classic Advance Wars style a lot more personality, with memorable characters and fun hero abilities that really change how a battle plays out.

The game has a great campaign, which is where I put most of my time. It works both as a solid tutorial for this kind of game, letting you learn different aspects of the gameplay at a steady pace throughout, while also telling a charming, lighthearted story set in the unique world of Aurania.

All of that comes together with a beautiful pixel-art style that reminds me of old-school strategy games, and a very upbeat, catchy soundtrack that fits perfectly.

And if that’s somehow still not enough, once you finish the campaign and the free DLC, there’s a huge amount of community content in the in-game workshop. There are thousands of maps, campaigns, puzzles, and more to try out.

All together, I fully recommend Wargroove.

La impotencia que me provoca Wargroove no es normal, es un juego lindo, con mecánicas sacadas de Advance Wars con sus pertinentes ajustes de dificultad si solo quieres experimentar la historia.
El problema viene cuando el puto juego quiere que consigas su 100% a base de farmear el modo arcade en modo dificil, modo que los putos Devs nunca jugaron porque es IMPOSIBLE en sus mapas navales, no puedo creer lo abusivo que es proporcionarle recursos infinitos a una IA en un modo que apenas se sostiene como un castillo de cartas, tras haberle dedicado más de 50 horas con la ilusión de sacar todos sus logros, toparme con esta pared de concreto me hace arrancarme los pelos de los huevos uno por uno, sin mencionar el grindeo de pesca que se tiene que hacer para conseguir su última estrella.
Me duele en el alma haber dedicado HORAS de mi vida viendo guias para toparme con esta barrera de mierda.

The first 85% of the campaign was pretty good. I couldn't bring myself to finish the game however, as the last few missions were too much of a slog for me. Having to worry about ground, air, and navy, while having to micro manage so many different types of units - just too exhausting. Still, I had fun until the end.

В игре нужно отключить большую часть анимаций, чтобы она стала играбельной.
Разработчики предусмотрели, что мы можем случайно пропустить их ценные содержательные диалоги и комментарии персонажей, поэтому они не отключаются.
Отвратительный двукнопочный интерфейс, в котором ничего не видно, ничего не понятно и сопровождается непрерывной дрочкой мыши.
Очень не хватает отката решения, рандома в игре нет, но каждый косяк будет приводить вас к откату уровня с чистого листа,
В кампании протагонист тряпка и нельзя казнить побеждённых врагов, минус.
Художественная оригинальность нулевая.

An inferior advance wars. While I'm fine playing an inferior product, that reality remains. Nothing about this game is ground breaking, new or fresh. It's the same formula but a worse product.

If you never played AW, then I guess it is a recommend - but the real recommend is play AW2 or Days of Ruin.

Cute game though don't go in expecting Advance Wars or else you'll end up feeling betrayed and might quit the game for multiple years after initially playing it, like me, only to still come out feeling more negative than positive about it.

When viewed by itself it can be fun though it's fundamentally flawed and I honestly think I would have enjoyed it more if I had never played Advance wars.

I enjoyed the coop campaign from the dlc when my wife and I played it but struggled to like the singleplayer campaign so it really was a case of "this is fun because the other person made it fun" akin to the "fun game with friends" reviews you see so often.

Recommended only when on a big sale and when you keep in mind that this is not Advance Wars. Even then I think I feel iffy about it.

Шикарный пиксель арт и анимации. Сюжет тут чисто "чтобы был" и видимо основной расчёт шёл именно на кооператив и битвы против кого-то. Если же играть кампанию или бой против "ИИ", то это будет лютой душкой, которая не принесёт никакого удовольствия, потому что играя против "ИИ" не ожидайте от него тактики или чего-то такого, он просто будет посылать волны мяса, а геймплей превратится в монотонную рутину с растущей сложностью, но не с растущим интересом к игре.

I hate Tutorials. So, you MUST play the tutorial mission and then the next tutorial mission and then a tutorial mission about ground effects and then a tutorial mission... and that was when I deinstalled the game.
Also, ranking depends on turns taken and while I like to watch the occasional speedrun on youtube it is a style of play absolutely NOT suited to me.

Its like Advance wars but in fantasy and with commanders on the field. I realy love the vibe, the animations are insane and the campaign is hard. Can be frustrating for new players but also realy rewarding.
To me its 9/10.

I like the game's vibe overall, but it just doesn't "flow". It doesn't play smoothly as you're constantly waiting for the UI to catch up to the user and there's a ton of dialogue that gets played with every retry attempt. This wouldn't be much of an issue if the AI was really good and you were fighting in somewhat fair scenarios, but unfortunately a lot of the levels compensate for the AI being smart with "Here's 300 enemies vs your 10, good luck" and you have to redo the level with a different strat.

Overall I'd say 6/10 experience, 9/10 graphics, don't really care for the story and the humor myself but that's personal taste. What makes it a hard no for me is that it lacks that "I want to play more"/SOVL that older games like advance wars and fire emblem had. Give the player some actual tools to do something with like make the healers heal +1 to a random adjacent ally, or make units actually good against certain types, or let units gain experience for a small damage bonus/weakness reduction so it actually pays to keep them alive. It just feels confused, I don't particularly care about keeping any of my units alive and it's not fun to play. I want to like WarGroove because I can see the effort, but it doesn't feel right to me.

Great tactics game. Some real, real, real good level design. Some of the campaign levels do drag on because slow-playing is usually the best strategy, but that's kinda just a natural result of the advance wars gameplay loop. If you like the genre, you'll like it, if you don't, you won't.

Only played a bit of the co-op campaign, but from what little I've seen that is really good as well.

Genuinely bad. This games difficulty boils down to "Hey player! The enemy army will get an army worth over 4k, and get an extra 2k per turn. You get 400 worth of gold, and maybe 600 if you play perfectly the first 3 turns. Oh and defend a 5 front area with only beginner units while your opponent gets the entire list. Good luck.". I have played hard strategy games; Dawn of War and its expansions, Civilization on deity mode, Chess at 1500 elo, Ratopia, and more, but this game's difficulty spikes so hard, and more importantly, is so frustrating and unenjoyable that I just stopped playing after act 2.

The characters are also just horrible. It feels so much like a D&D group of people trying to make you care about characters with no story. Literally a quote is from the protag "You're not good at chats are you" to the enemy general THAT IS LITERALLY TRYING TO MURDER THEM. Like the story is so so so bad that you can't even ignore it.

Also, I don't know if this is a me problem or what, but the game seems hard locked to 30 fps and is very poorly built like starbound (Explains why the plant people are back).

The very combat itself suck. It's always boils down to a game of chicken of who'll walk into trebuchet range first and lose half the army, Which makes the campaign worse because either you have to walk into no man's land with VERY fragile units, or the cpu can just shove their way through. Even the AI understands this and will just circle around your unit's attack range like vultures.

Just avoid this game, there are so many better options. It really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks how this studio had two massive misses on such promising games.

To me this a fusion between Kingdom Rush, Fire Emblem and Advance wars. All I'd say is if you're buying this game thinking of re-living the advance wars experience then you're going to be disappointed. The CO's in Wargroove are on the battlefield & they don't influence the troops stats, they basically function like a overpowered unit in fire emblem with kingdom rush hero superpowers. The issue is each army has no identity. If you go back to advance wars every CO has pros and cons that directly influence the entire army, for example Max has strong direct combat units like tanks but his artillery & rockets are weak; or Colin has overall weaker units but he gets to buy them a lot cheaper. It encouraged different tactics. But then you come back to Wargroove and that's totally non existent, all of your troops have the exact same stats as your opponents stats, the CO powers in Wargroove called 'grooves' typically also work in a small area around your CO they don't affect the entire game. On the plus side I do like the variety of the troops being there's 20+ types and lots of learning of matchups and how to get criticals with every unit. That was a unique and fun idea.

Single player campaign started off promising & gave a good tutorial. But the overall plot was really pointless. I'm not going to go into detail about that but it's about a princess going into exile but instead of avenging her kingdom as the main objective she goes down all these little side story filler missions which have nothing to do with main plot.

The reason I'm giving this the thumbs up is because multiplayer is really fun, there's a co-op campaign, scenario maps, a huge library (numbering in the thousands) of player maps/campaigns for 2, 3, 4 players . So pretty much unlimited content forever.

I bought it on sale for about £5 and I think that is the correct price point.

Great game. Play this BEFORE playing WarGroove 2. I did it the other way around and kinda regret it. They are pretty similar in quality, but WarGroove 1 gives you a better introduction to the story and the mechanics. I do like the mechanics of WarGroove 2 a bit more, but the differences are minor so you don't have to be like me and buy the sequel first because you're worried the first game will be of lesser quality.

Bon, je me suis relu et j'ai modifié cette évaluation plusieurs fois, parce que je me trouvais trop dur.

Mais voilà, l'ennui c'est qu'il faut choisir entre "bien" et "pas bien". Et au final, mon cœur penche davantage vers la seconde option. Qu'on soit clair, le plus important pour moi, le focus de ce texte, c'est le mode campagne. Je suis conscient que d'autres joueurs trouveront leur plaisir dans les autres modes.

Les points positifs : c'est mignon. Les mécaniques et graphismes rappellent évidemment les Advance Wars sur GBA (c'est comme ça que je me suis fait charmé). La DA et la bande-son sont faites avec goût. Le contenu et la rejouabilité sont très honorables. C'est fait avec soin, on n'a pas cette impression de jeu précipité et bâclé.

Voilà, ceci étant dit, il y a malheureusement des éléments qui, après un certain nombre d'heures de jeu, font de plus en plus taches.

Souci numéro 1 : pas d'évolution de gameplay. Toutes les missions se ressemblent. C'est pas la première fois que ça m'arrive avec un jeu Chucklefish. Au bout d'un moment, ça devient (très) lassant : on se demande où est le plaisir. Un mode histoire plus travaillé, plus concis, moins redondant, moins gnan-gnan, bref -- mieux écrit, m'aurait sûrement plus touché. La pilule serait alors un peu mieux passée. Et tiens, un aspect RPG dans lequel les commandants gagnent de l'EXP, montent en niveau, améliorent des statistiques spécifiques, puis pourquoi pas des compétences aussi, et bien cela aurait rendu la chose moins linéaire et plus riche. Mais non.

Autre chose : les cartes, somme toute très sommaires et trop similaires. Plus de variété aurait développé les choix et préférences dans la sélection des unités. Ici, on se retrouve très rapidement avec des cartes trop grandes, dans lesquelles l'avantage sera donc toujours placé sur les unités les plus mobiles.

À partir de là, vous devez vous dire que l'aspect tactique et stratégique doivent prendre du plomb dans l'aile. Vous avez raison. Mais il y a pire encore : la gestion de l'ordi. Vous serez confronté toujours à la même chose : c'est pas un ordi qui brille par son intelligence de jeu, MAIS c'est un ordi qui possède beaucoup plus d'unités et de ressources que vous. Et qui bouge plus vite parce qu'il a plus d'unités plus mobiles. Et qui, par cercle vertueux, se retrouve avec un volume d'unités vous dépassant complètement au bout de quelques tours.

C'est à partir de ce moment que vous ne vous surprendrez plus à soupirer devant votre écran.

Mostly just played the campaign but there's multiplayer too. Had a blast with the campaign wasn't a fan of the last couple missions however not a big fan when a strategy game becomes a really slow game of inches. But other than that Wargroove was a faithful adaptation of Advance Wars. The story was simple and fun and Caesar is the bestest ever! Looking forward to playing the sequel

I'll admit that I missed out on this genre of game play. That being said, I enjoyed it with all the elements coming together: the game feel, the art style, the mechanics, and the story as well. My only major complaint is that there's no speed up button. Sure I enjoy the game's animations but having to watch the opponent's moves and their respective animations when you're on a bit of a time crunch maxes me a bit anxious. I don't want to frame this as too much of a negative though as watching the opponent's actions allow me to better formulate a proper response. I would recommend this to those who like turn based strategy games.

On the surface it looks like Advance Wars but just with fantasy units. Yes, there is obviously a lot of passion in this game.

I absolutely adore Advance Wars but this game did not not click at all with me. Missing Co Powers is one thing, but somehow Advance Wars just felt much more polished overall, the gameplay was just better.

You might want to pick this up during a sale, it's not bad, but it ain't great either.

Barely a strategy game. Scoring is based on turn numbers, not effective unit placement. Tactical and efficient unit management is punished and throwing units into fog of war to die is rewarded. It feels like banging your head into a wall over and over again. Controls are clunky, animations are slow and tedious, and the story is cheeks. There's really nothing to sink your teeth into, it's as shallow as a puddle in every way. It's a shame because I really wanted to like this game!

it's a lovely turn based tactical game in the vein of Battle Isle, Nectaris, Advance Wars and such. Tons of options, fun storyline, asynchronous multiplayer, pretty in-depth level editor and a full 2 player co-op campaign.

There are some minor downsides such as AI being pretty dumb, so most PvE levels need a much stronger computer opponent. Also, Leaders have their special powers (aka grooves) that vary in power A LOT. Some are literally game changing while others can be very circumstational or borderline useless, but it's not that terrible. The good ones are pretty well balanced among each other. I would also kill for undo in some cases that don't include random elements or fog of war.

But overall, fun and addictive. Great for playing with friends that don't have much time so you can play a turn asynchronously whenever you catch time, as if you were playing chess over snail mail.

It's not strategy. It's rote memorization of the order of operations the devs want you to do. The other negative reviews were right. The thing is, Advance Wars, which this game is clearly inspired by, also has the same issue. But at least with Advance Wars it lets you get around halfway through the game before succumbing to rote memorization "difficulty". This game starts off with that right away.
