A true childhood classic and my favorite PC game of all time. My friends and I used to pass the controller (or keyboard!) every time one of us died.
I never finished the game, but the variety in stages like Feudal Japan and the Wild West kept me coming back. That was a golden era where innovative gameplay mattered far more than high-end graphics, no DLC, no seasonal passes, just pure fun.

Replaying Time Commando really reminded me of something important:
👉 a good game doesn’t need perfect, shiny modern graphics to be memorable.

What really makes Time Commando special is its heart.

The story flow, the idea of traveling through different eras, the cool environments, unique weapons, and varied enemies are the true strengths of this game. Every new age feels fresh, forces you to adapt, and keeps the experience exciting. You’re not just changing skins — your playstyle evolves with history.

Creative time-travel concept with strong identity
Distinct eras, each with unique weapons & enemies
Exploration rewarded with secrets and hidden weapons
Challenging, unforgiving gameplay (very satisfying when you succeed)
Memorable atmosphere despite limited tech of the time

👎 Cons
Controls can feel clunky by today’s standards
Brutal checkpoint system (die = restart 😅)
No tutorials or guidance — very unfriendly for new players
Graphics haven’t aged well (my wife definitely agrees 🤣)
Still, these flaws are also part of its charm. It’s a game that expects patience, curiosity, and persistence — something we don’t see enough anymore.

Honestly, I really hope someone remakes Time Commando with modern tech while keeping its soul intact…
Or better yet — imagine a Time Commando movie 👀
Time travel, different civilizations, brutal survival across history — that concept still works today.

Как работает – через встроенный dosbox, значит без проблем на любой системе, только придётся помучиться, если нужно будет скриншоты делать. Думаю, других вопросов об очень старых играх, за редким исключением, не возникает, люди тут делятся на две категории: одни когда-то давно их застали и возможно, что всё ещё испытывают ностальгические чувства, остальным – всё равно.

Сейчас эта игра никуда не годится: битемап от третьего лица с фиксированной камерой, танковым управлением и откровенно дурацкого вида героем, который передвигается ну очень уж неторопливой трусцой (или как метко выразились в соседнем отзыве «как в штаны нaсрaмши»). Но палец вниз ставить вроде тоже неправильно, будто в музей прийти и прикалываться над каменными топорами. Дали именно то, что обещали перед покупкой, не брал же я её только для того, чтобы отрицательный отзыв оставить. Плюс в отличие от какого-нибудь ZAR эта игра вроде бы по меркам своего времени была совсем неплохой. Сложно, конечно, сейчас оценивать стандарты 1996 года, 90-е вообще были очень хаотичным временем – это теперь любым стилям, хоть реалистичной графике, хоть в полпикселя есть место, а тогда, насколько я понимаю, можно было начинать делать что-то вполне приемлемое, как вдруг ещё до выхода обнаружить, что мода изменилась и твоя игра уже безнадёжно устарела.

Тем не менее, никаких видных конкурентов именно в жанре «битемап от третьего лица» на момент выхода я не нашёл и вообще похоже их было немного, зато сразу вспомнился в разы более чудовищный The Crow: City of Angels, который вышел значительно позже, так что с этой стороны Time Commando тоже не поругаешь. Уровни пусть и короткие (5-8 минут в среднем), но их по два на каждую эпоху и для каждой из этих эпох от каменного века до далёкого будущего не поленились сделать свой набор оружия и уникальных противников – наверняка будоражило воображение в своё время.

Поэтому да, пусть будет палец вверх, но ностальгию свою скорее рекомендую успокоить за просмотром какого-нибудь прохождения на ютубе. Я и сам купил только потому, что в детстве смотрел, как в неё играл отец и это было классно.

Win98時代、NECのPCに入っていた懐かしい一本。
親が買ったパソコンで、よく分からないまま起動して遊んでいた記憶が強く残っている。

操作は初代バイオのような戦車操作で、近接戦は正直かなり理不尽。
でも西部時代と現代戦争時代だけは別格に面白い。
銃が使えることで変な駆け引きをせずに戦えて、「ちゃんと戦っている」感覚があった。

名作とは言えないけど、忘れられない。
このゲームは完成度よりも、当時のPCと一緒に思い出すタイプの作品。
ベリーイージをおすすめする。ノーマルは前半結構理不尽

日本語はないですが、プレイには特に問題ないです。

A fun and weird beat 'em up that plays like the first three Alone in the Dark games but with only the funny janky action. Sometimes you have to use the items in your environment, so try that use key on things you see to find hidden items or a way to progress. The game has more chill than Ecstatica while being equally ridiculous.

Es war ein Spiel, das ich in meiner Kindheit geliebt habe und das mich stundenlang unterhalten hat. Doch aus heutiger Sicht ist es leider sehr schlecht gealtert. Seine Mängel in Bezug auf Steuerung, Kamerawinkel und das Speichersystem machen es heute zu einer echten Herausforderung für all diejenigen, die nicht mit der "Retro-Brille" darauf schauen können.

Talvez o jogo mais importante de PC que existe pra mim, já que foi o primeiro que pude jogar, e foi no laboratório de informática da escola, quando era tudo uma novidade absurda, mas mesmo depois de mais de 15 anos o jogo ainda têm qualidade, mas é bem limitado, porém um jogo bem desenvolvido pra época.

Pros amantes dos jogos antigos de PC, esse representa bem uma parte do que foi o pilar de jogos numa época onde tudo isso começou. Recomendo.

What a masterpiece. Even after all these years, I’m still in love with this game. Back in the days when there was no Half-Life 1, and John Carmack with id Software hadn’t released Quake 1 yet. Maybe back then, we were all wondering what could be more impressive and better than this game — little did we know, we were just 1-2 years away from having our minds blown by a new era of stunning full 3D games.

I think Time Commando was one of the last great titles of the retro era. The music, game mechanics, and characters — fantastic. It’s a great example of what "game design" was back in the day. Actually, it’s even more like what "game design" truly is. Or rather, what it should be.

I replayed this game in 2025 and finished it in three hours, yet I still enjoy it more than 90% of modern AAA titles.

Really unique action game from the creator of the original Alone in the Dark, Frederick Raynal. I love how cinematic the action feels with those great FMV scenarios and excellent camera placement and movement. The combat system is the same from Alone in the Dark, but polished, expanded and perfected; it's really versatile and has lots of creative variations depending on the weapon you are using, and believe me, THERE ARE TONS of different weapons. The journey through time is just EPIC, you visit lots of periods of time, each with its own atmosphere, music, weapons, enemies... man, there is SO MUCH creativity put in this game!
Also, the credits scene is one of the best and most memorable I've experienced.

The year is 1996. I am 6. The disc for Time Commando comes free with Windows 95. I have never played a videogame before. My mind... is blown. Almost 30 years later, this game still goes hard. Soundtrack? Slaps. Stanley's skin-tight yellow future suit? Baller. Punching and kicking cavemen and Conquistadors to death? Absolute aces.

I no longer have to call in my dad to play the level with the space zombies (because they don't scare the peepee outta me anymore), so that's a bonus. However, I do NOT remember this game being this difficult. Dark Souls? Don't know her

Era un bello 2 de diciembre cuando empecé este juego. Sin conocerlo. A ciegas casi.
Sólo sabía que era medio difícil por sus controles y me aventuré a ponerlo en HARD.
A partir de esa decisión, casi inocente, empezó la tortura.

Había partes donde derrotabas a un enemigo difícil, donde estás trabado hace mucho, y luego de eso, te viene algo peor. Sin checkpoint previo ni nada. ARREGLATE COMO PUEDAS.
Así fue todo el juego... Pasaba una parte hasta un checkpoint, pero ya sabía que lo que venía, iba a ser peor.
Este fue el juego que más sufrí y creo que después de jugarlo tengo varias enfermedades nuevas en mi cuerpo.
Horas y horas trabado en muchas partes, pero al final, siempre pude avanzar (no sé como)
3 meses de jugar a esto. 3 Meses de agonía...
Hasta que, en la inolvidable noche del 12/03/2024, se me dió y pude completar esta desventura llamada Time Commando.
Después de tanto tiempo con un juego, le agarrás cariño, y más si es un juego tan hijo de re mil pu**s como este.
Sería una locura no recomendar este juego solo por ser así como es: Difícil y tan hijo de re mil pu**s.

Time Commando is a great game for those who want to revisit the past and see what gaming was like back in the early 1990s for 3D Action titles. The game's concept is simple enough: you are a Time Commando who has been dispatched to go through different periods of time to defeat a virus that was inserted in a Time Machine by an evil scientist. You go through multiple time periods, fighting and killing whatever is in your path. Apparently, Time Commandos don't think about what kind of repercussions come from killing so many in each time period, because the game ends the same way, no matter how you play it. The weirdest design choice of this game has got to be controls though. For some reason, they decided to make this adventure play just like Resident Evil, which is jarring considering they never use a Zombie or Demon.

Pros:
+ The Weapon Variety makes each Time Period have a different feel in combat.
+ The graphics and music are actually nice pieces of history.
+ It plays great on the Steam Deck!
+ It's a very fast-loading title to just sit down and play
+ It can be challenging

Cons:
- The controls are very dated and sluggish. This will turn off modern gamers.
- While the weapons change, the combat can get boring after a bit. It's good that they don't stay in each time period too long.
- The story is simple and almost non-existent. If you are here for good plots, move along.

Overall, I recommend the game for those who enjoy old-school games at this point or would love to replay it on their Steam Deck. On another note: This game is ripe for a remake (if done correctly).

Non se pode dicir que sexa un xogo bonito, nin que envellecese nin medianamente ben. Porén, no seu día a idea e a demo flipábanme, e igual por iso o xoguei con certa emoción que me fixo desfrutar.
Con todo, os movementos son incómodos, a cámara fixa, a imposibilidade de voltar atrás no escenario e os polígonos de mediados dos 90 son crimes contra a xogabilidade que lastran en exceso. Tamén o feito de que o único xeito de entender a historia sexa rematar o xogo -e aínda así...- é outro problema que podemos achacar á época e aos poucos medios do estudo. Por último, os niveis de dificultade son bastante aleatorios, do fácil ao normal hai un salto enorme.
Penso, malia os seus evidentes e numerosos defectos, que a idea está ben, o deseño base tamén e é probábel que cun bo remake que lave ben a cara e asuma o punto de mira na xogabilidade e o control, se poida desfrutar moitísimo.

This game reminds me of my late father. He introduced me to gaming with this, Heretic, MDK, Duke Nukem 3D and Descent. Extremely nostalgic.

Anyways, if you are planning on playing this for the first time you're probably a retro gamer and you probably know you'll be playing a 90's game, which comes with all the limitations from that time.
Aside from that, Time Commando offers:
Great exploration gameplay. Every stage will reward you for finding hidden objects and rooms.
Great concept. The game will make you travel trough time, starting from pre history going all way to the future. To me this is the selling point of this game.
Each era will set you with weapons from that time, so the gameplay will always be changing.
Don't forget to use the code COMMANDO after finishing the game for an extra stage. (guess this is the only code I'll never forget lol)

Recommended only for people who played this 27 years ago :D

Played this as a kid in 1996 and finished it multiple times. Except for the camera movement being very choppy (was it like that in 96? Probably was...) and the initial cutscene not playing for me for some reason - the gameplay and music still have this magic!

I remembver that even in 1996 this games graphics were a bit weird, a little bit sub-par (when you compare it to Tomb Raider 1 that released in the same year, which aged a bit better). Super interesting premise though - from fighting cavemen through knighs, WW1, to science fiction. Fascinating, I don't recall any fighting game doing that.

Some of the best use of pre-rendered image in a game. For a 1996 game, the effect is really impressive. Specially at the later stages. The combat is a bit clunky, but the theme variety and enemies make it a better experience than I tought I would have.

Go with a retro-focused-mind and you can have a blast. The difficulty is unforgiven in the early stages, but for those who remain the good part is really at the end.

Fantastic idea of storyline and epic music! Of course its pure nostalgia to the players who grow up with the PC revolution in the 90s. This game aslo needs a remaster for sure!

Поиграв в Стим-версию, понял что на сложности "Нормал" играть нет никакой возможности.
Твой перс бегает как насрамши в штаны, а мобы становятся предельно резкими, как понос.
При этом оказывается версии игры для Европы и США разнятся. Для США сделали вменяемый уровень сложности "Нормал", для Европы этот уровень очень уж кривой и сложный
А если принять во внимание такое же всратое управление... Короче, играйте на "Изи".
ps В Стиме как раз европейская версия. У Гога вроде как версия для США.

Ah, yes, Time Commando. A game that only left a small tiny portion to my childhood - due to my cousin owning it instead of me and he was already in a gameplay (at the first Wild West level, no less), I couldn't even find the game's name out - but said portion still left an impression on me of how I didn't know how to play it and just fiddling around like the 5-6 year old I was. After seeing a 6 parter review of the game 10 years ago, I got flashbacks of that game and made me wish I could own it somehow. 10 years after that, I finally got the chance and had a great blast with this game! Definitely could recommend for anyone who also played this in their childhood in one way or another, or are looking for a challenging retro game!

Hace una banda que vengo queriendo jugar este juego, lo jugaba de pequeño y recien ahora pude encontrarlo, que lindo revivir esos momentos de la niñes, lo recomiendo pero jugarlo con la mente abierta, es decir es del 96, recien empezaban los juegos en 3D, y hoy en dia esta un bastante añejo su gameplay, pero aun asi se disfruta, yo lo estoy disfrutando como la primera vez.

Es cierto todo lo que dicen los reviews, [b]Time Commando[/b] es un juego que envejeció muy mal y se lo disfruta mucho por esa añeja nostalgia que despierta en aquellos que supimos apreciarlo en los 90. Su dificultad es alta, pero no imposible. Cuesta agarrarle la mano al control y puede generar un rechazo rápido si no se le tiene paciencia. No hay tutorial como es obvio, para ello, tendrías que ver el manual y de paso entender de qué va la historia, que siendo honesto, no es su punto fuerte. Lo curioso del asunto es que hoy en día catalogaría dentro del género “Soul-like” y “beat em up” aunque a ciencia cierta no es ni uno, ni otro. Vendría a ser más bien una aventura gráfica con mucha acción. Para poder comprender [b]Time Commando[/b] hay que jugar [b]Time Commando[/b]. El gameplay entero puede durar entre 3 a 5 hs dependiendo la dificultad seleccionada. No hay cromos ni logros, solo dopamina corriendo por las venas. Es posible encontrarlo a 80% off.

Отличная старая игра. Знакомство с которой я начал на PS1. и тогда перепроходил ее миллион раз с удовольствием.
Но, как и в классическом думе, так и в этой игре, в версии для PC меня ждало жуткое разочарование. И касается это даже не "кастрированного" видеоролика без озвучки. Нет. дело в музыке. Она ужасна. Я даже и не знал, что на ПС, вместо божественных колоколов и других звуков, которые звучат на PS1, на компе звучит отвратительная пищалка из синтезатора MIDI. Заменить бы музыку, на плейстейшеновскую, цены б не было игре. А так, только остается эмулятор. ((((

和隔壁的MDK不同，这款在机房接触到的游戏当年没有去买CD，原因也很简单，相比MDK这游戏难度有点高。
千禧年之际陪同学去买PS盗版CD，无意中发现这游戏的PS版。想怂恿同学也买下可惜他眼里当年只有MGS，无奈又错过。
现在终于达成心愿了！终于有机会好好的玩下当年霸机等人联机红警时打发时间的“小游戏”了！

Už jsem zapomněl, jak brutálně těžká tahle hra byla. Ale s ohledem na její délku (velmi krátkou) je to pouze pochopitelné.

Los controles son un poco complicados al principio, pero uno luego se acostumbra.

This is a game of an era from the good old days of 2000s.
I tried this game back in 2000 as a kid but couldn't finish it. I got to second level then stuck. This is a hard game. Finally able to finish this game with walk through help. The biggest constraint is the time so it helps to use walk through to collect all the clean circuits or run out of time and die. Keep the first life so the health bar is always 4 bars. and collect all the hidden items. It'll easier to finish the game. A well made game.

Wow.

I was only 7 the last time I had ever touched this game, that was all the way back in 2009. I got frustrated with Time Commando because of how difficult it was, never being able to finish the game after already halfway through it and eventually gave up. I ended up losing the disc somehow and when I did decide to give it another try I never found it again nor could I find another copy anywhere else, so I gave up looking and eventually forgot the game even existed.

Then LO AND BEHOLD, 12 years later and I stumble across this game again on Steam. Words cannot express how absolutely THRILLED I was to be able to play Time Commando again!

After all these years, I can finally bring myself some closure and finish this damn game once and for all.

Thank you Adeline Software for such an amazing game, and an awesome childhood!

Juli 1996 kam das Game raus und ich habe es gekauft, auf der CD-ROM sind 2 Soundtracks enthalten von Philippe Vachey. Als 15 Jähriger, musste es in meiner Sammlung nicht fehlen.

Die Reise beginnt in der menschlichen Frühzeit. Als Zeitreisender manövriert Ihr eine detaillierte Polygon-Figur durch vorberechnete Pfade. Sämtliche Tiere und Menschen in Time Commando bestehen aus einer außergewöhnlich detailreichen Mischung aus Textur- und Gouraud-schattierten Polygonen. Wie einen Film spielt die Kamerafahrt ab, lauft Ihr in einen Gegner, müßt Ihr erst siegen, um weitermarschieren zu können. Ihr findet Waffen entweder versteckt am Wegesrand, oder Ihr bemächtigt Euch der Gegenstände besiegter Kreaturen. Ihr kämpft Euch in jeder der Epochen durch zwei Abschnitte. Habt Ihr den Endkampf gegen besonders hartnäckige Gegner bestanden, dürft Ihr ein Paßwort notieren.

Diese Liste habe ich immernoch in der Orginal CD Verpackung ;-)

Nostalgie quand tu nous tient... :-)
A l'époque ce jeu était une petite révolution avec ses personnages en 3D évoluant dans un décor en image de synthèse.
Il faut une certaine dextérité et pas mal de persévérance pour finir le jeu en traversant les différentes époques, un challenge que l'on ne trouve plus dans les jeux actuels.
Le jeu a certes un peu vieilli niveau tech, mais le plaisir est toujours là !

Very charming old DOS game with amusing animations, enjoyable soundtrack and variety of levels. Gameplay can be clunky and camera angle is not like modern games, but the animations make up for it imo.

Does not include extra goodies like the GOG version, namely some artwork, wallpaper/avatars, reference card.

I own the original PC Big Box released for Windows 95, the Playstation version and of course I could not miss the digital versions like the Steam.

If you are looking for a challenging game full of difficulty levels don’t look further.
Time Commando is a gem for is time and if you haven’t tried it yet go for it and you won’t regret.

It is a tough one if you are looking to speedrun it.

I've been playing this game since I was about three years old. It's most likely the first video game I ever played.

I have no idea where my parents got the disk but it made me love computers and programming for the rest of my life.

It also had an effect on my perception of history. Here's how:

- I permanently and irreversibly believe that Neanderthals looked like Batman but with orange-ish clothes

- I'm afraid of women because the first person you meet in the Roman Ages

- I will forever believe friendly knights will duel each other if their opponent tricks them into it

- Wizards are annoying and can teleport.

- Black belt martial artists got nothing on an unarmed Stanley Opar

- If I see ever a clay pot next to a statue, you'd best believe I'm gonna turn the lid 360 degrees just to be sure

- The American Civil War was fought by standing in one place and pretending to be a statue

- The more recent wars were fought by guys with roller blades and grenades

- Beyond Time is probably what it's like to do DMT

All-in-all, this game was way ahead of its time, and games are no longer made to the quality they were back in 1996. Seeing it appear on Steam with a new studio backing it has made me a happy man.

I disagree with another reviewer that the game serves exclusively for nostalgia, it's still fun and challenging.

Would rather play TC than Call of Duty. Would love to see a sequel or remake.

if u want the DOSBox to be in windowed mode with higher resolution, you have to go to the steam folder you installed it, like "X:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Time Commando", find "TC.conf" and change the window resolution to something like "windowresolution=1280x960" then either "fullscreen=false" or just Alt+Enter when it opens

Foi um dos primeiros jogos de PC que eu tive na vida, esse fator nostálgico foi o que me fez comprar e reviver esse jogo mais uma vez.
Por se tratar de um jogo antigo (1996), acredito que não irá gerar muito interesse da galera mais nova devido a jogabilidade que exige paciência e gráficos mais ultrapassados, mas se mesmo assim esses fatores não forem tão relevantes para você, Time Commando é um bom jogo para passar o tempo (Literalmente).

[b] Time Commando [/b] é um jogo de ação/aventura em terceira pessoa ao qual você controla Stanley, um agente especial cuja missão é eliminar um vírus inserido que causou um vórtice temporal que ameça a existência do mundo, durante o jogo você viajará por diversos períodos históricos a fim de destruir o vírus.

I used to play this game as a kid and remember it with pleasure.

SUMMARY OF THE PLOT
Because the game was released in 1996, the story takes place in the near future (in 2020). The military has, with help from Historical Tactical Center, developed an advanced AI-system that allows every combat technique through history. One day, a person from a rival company breaks in and install a predator-virus in the main computer, which causes that the whole mankind are sucked into a vortex.

Stanley Opar, the game protagonist, works as a S.A.V.E. (Special Action for Virus Elimination) and is the only hope to save the world. When he is sucked into the vortex, he must travel through different time eras, starting in Prehistoric and ending in the era of Beyond time where he must fight the virus, which is a big blue shark.

The different time eras are: Prehistoric, Roman Empire, Feudal Japan, Medivel Europe, Conquistador, Wild West, Modern Wars (WW 1 and probably WW 3), Future (Stanley's future) and Beyond Time.

GRAPHIC
The game was, for it's time, very detailed and realistic. In the beginning, Stanley are shaved, but gets beard further in the game. The cutscenes are good for it's time.

GAMEPLAY
You play in a 3rd person perspective. In 1996 it was unusual to turn around in 360º; when you klicked to the right, the character went right and don't [i]turn[/i] right. This was something new for it's time.

You can attack with kicks and melee attacks. You can also jump to the left, the right and forward. In each time era you will have typical weapon arsenal for that era, i.e. in prehistoric you'll have stones, club and a spear while you in the Modern Wars have rifles and handgranades. Every era offers five different weapons.

There are various hidden room and places where you could find power-ups, weapons or other things. Every era includes two stages. In some stages, it's a boss, in others there's no boss fight.

The camera angle is better now than in 1996. Great work, Steam!

MUSIC
Every stage has it's own music. In the menu, there is two soundtracks.

CONCLUSION
Like anything from the 1990s, this game is just for nostalgia, nothing more. If you are a new player, don't buy it because you will not find it satisfying. For me, and those who played it as kids, it's a pleasure to see it on Steam!
