Awesome game, very fun, but nobody playing it... makes me sad :/
Even tho it is not expensive, I'd say it is not priced correctly, since there are many cool and fun games on the same level and for free, this one should either be free or close to that, specially with such low popularity.
I'd totally recommend buying it to play with a group of friends, because if you are planning to play with random people online... forget it.

Making it free to play could save it, adding more characters and vanity items would be a huge help, and the game has literally no sex appeal.
why make it a multiplayer game?
if it had a solid single player then the game would have been much better

Oh, this game is good. Like, Overwatch before Overwatch.
But, the developers sort of stopped working on it, and it got boring after a few hours, so the playerbase just died out.
Online focused games like this need to encourage players to stick around, be it through new characters, or skins.
So yeah...I don't really recommend it as is, unless you got plenty of friends who'd get it too.
It's not worth jumping in alone...and it's a shame they didn't even add decent bots or singleplayer content.
This game would be super rad if it had local multiplayer or a real online playerbase.
2018 review: the game is dead. Even putting the Distance Filter in the Server Browser on "Very Far", results in 0 games in the list. Unfortunately, the conclusion is that the game is dead. SteamCharts confirms: the average no. of players in the last 30 days is "1.5".

A good choice if you're looking for a PvP platformer to screw around in with friends.
As of now i don't reccomend the game. It's really great, one of my favourite games, but nobody is playing it anymore. It's a shame it isn't free to play.

Покупал в день релиза Deluxe издание вместе с друзьями. Порубились 10 часов, было интересно, потом забыл про игру. Когда через некоторое время решил поиграть в игру снова, понял, что разработчики тоже забыли про игру, а затем и игроки соответственно.

One of my favourite multiplayer games, sadly it died pretty quick. Would be great to play against bots or just to see the game's revival.
This game have no players, I didn't even managed to play ONE game. Waste of money and time, just avoid The Showdown Effect. Don't even think about buying it while on sale because it won't bring players anyway.

A really fun game that involves very fast combat with a good selection of weapons. The main problem I found is trying to get people to play this game, for some reason it just doesn't appeal to a good number of people.

this game definitely has a lot of potential, it's a real pity that there are no players at all and that the developers abandoned this game as a whole, it was fun while it lasted, it was a very unique game that offered a different kind of mechanic in a fighting game, the concepts and the characters were amazing alongside the beautiful artstyle and menu, everything about this game was a gem, could have really gone far.
Why did this game have to die man /: I was just growing interest in the game to after plaing customs with my friends. What a shame for something with so much potential, to just die out after one year of being released.

it's 100% dead. i'd really suggest the developers to add bots/an offline feature, but it seems this game has been long abandoned. if i hadn't got this on humble bundle i would definitley ask for a refund.

This game was so much fun when it was active, but you won't be able to play it at all without a few other friends having it. Wish they put in a single player vs ai mode but there you go. Don't buy it.

The only thing wrong with this game is that nobody plays it anymore. I'm not sure why it died, but if you have a group of friends that like to play random games, this is a great one to pick up. Everything still works great if there are other people playing. I personally purchased it for a few friends because I realized that was the only way I was going to convince them of how good the game actually is.
My absolute favorite thing to do in this game actually consists of turning off most of the features. You can run a custom game with modifiers that allow you to do things like disable character special abilities, 4x damage, kung fu bonus points, and more. So i like to make throwables stun, with no character specials and no weapons. You are forced to use what is on the various maps and if you throw something and hit it gives you a small stun. Game turns into smash brothers in a lot of ways when people start understanding how to do the different kung fu moves.

Eu gostei bastante do jogo quando comprei e joguei com amigos. Mas os servidores eram péssimos e com o tempo a quantidade de jogadores foi sumindo e aí parei de jogar. Não sei como anda hoje em dia, mas ele era super divertido.

Fun 2D fighter. Every duel feels intense and brutal.
I bought this game when it came out and put many hours into it.
When it first game out and for several years after it was very popular and had many players but sadly due to the games age its overlooked now by most and there are very few 'if any' in the online lobby's.
If this game ever goes on sale for dirt cheap i would recommend anyone picking up a few copies and passing it onto friends. You will have a good time.
The showdown effect is really an excellent multiplayer game. Its a pity so many review give it a negative downthumb solely because few people play it, BUT they don't realise their thumbs down controbute to a "mixed" rating review, and thus make many simply ignore it on that basis alone, which feeds the "no players" problem.
Anyway, if you buy it with your friends, you can easily make your own lobby and have hours of fun. mechanics are varied, heroes are varied, you have to play to unlock all the characters and weapons, but its fun to learn that way. there are many moves you can pull off, and rulesets you can add which change how everything works...one ruleset, one type of tactic/combo/skill is good, another ruleset and its lousy. It is fun figuring out the best tactic for a given map and/or ruleset with your friends. Gameplay has depth and high skill ceiling.
This game is bad but then again I played it when it was dead. Maybe it was good once but no longer.

Probably the best 2d shooter released on Steam. This game was way more fun than Towerfall or Duck Game, an absolute shame that it died out so quickly.

Played Soldat long ago, was hoping for something similar. This would be it... if there were players. Developers abandoned game and haven't opened it up to Steamworks support. One thing would fix the game completetly: BOTS!
This serves as a review and a plea. The game when it was released and populated was super fun with interesting combat mechanics and ways to move through levels. I can't recommend this game though because it's dead. Please revive this game Paradox.

Das größte Manko gleich vorweg: Online ist dieses Spiel quasi tot. Als ich mir das Spiel damals zugelegt habe, habe ich meistens nur einen aktiven Server gefunden, besetzt mit einem halben Dutzend Spieler, die zudem großteils die selben waren. Mittlerweile finde ich überhaupt keinen Server mehr.
Abgesehen davon macht das Spiel super Spaß: Schneller, aber nicht zu frustrierender Kampf, verschiedene Modi (Teamkampf, Jeder gegen Jeden, Last Man Standing) und nette, aber nicht herausragende Grafik. Auch gefällt mir persönlich der Soundtrack. Bis auf einen Trainingsmodus, in dem man möglichst schnell unbewegliche Puppen wegschnetzelt, gibt es keinen Singleplayer-Modus. Gerade deshalb die Empfehlung:
Möglichst mit einer Gruppe von Freunden spielen. Ansonsten ist das Risiko, keinen aktiven Server zu finden, leider extrem hoch.
This is an amazing game. I had more fun playing this then I ever had playing a game like Over Watch. I remember there was a 2 week stretch where a few of my friends and I would play this game 3-4 hours a day. I don't know why it never caught on, but unfortunately the game is completey dead. I'd play it again in a heartbeat, but at this time you are just throwing your money away if you buy it.

Malheureusement, il y a parfois un fossé indépassable entre les promesses et la réalité. Dans le cas présent, vous ne tarderez pas à constater que le contenu rachitique du titre et ses nombreux problèmes de connexion finiront par vous gâcher totalement l'expérience. Il ne reste donc plus qu'à croiser les doigts pour que les équipes de Arrowhead Games mettent les mains dans le cambouis et nous corrigent finalement tous ces petits défauts... Hav fun ! XD

There was a time back when the game was first released that I would of recommended the game.
The action in the game is competitive & fun without being overly cheap with the repetitive use of moves to exploit characters.
However, it is impossible to get someone to play with. So unless you have friends to play with, I would pass as no one has a custom game setup nor can you find others to match with in ranked game matches.
Also, there is no offline/campaign/bot mode so you can't play without other players.
Best Game 2D EU!

TLDR: Empty dead multiplayer only game with cash shop and not free to play.
Battle Royale style sidescroll beatemup/shooter in arenas. This is a paid title but also had a cash shop in. Servers are obviously dead as a doornail. Unless you somehow manage to host between a bunch of people who own this you wont be able to do much. Even then it seems like this is just your standard brawl/shoot action with nothing special. The fighting itself feels and controls good, similar to Shoot Many Robots. Probably because just like this title it has playable combat but no Xbox360 pad support. There is nothing else to see here so I am removing this dead title for declutter.
Looks like a cool game, but don't buy it...that's the unfortunate statement I have to start off with. The main problem is that it's online PvP only and no one ever seems to be online to play against. There's a training mission you can play that lasts for a minute or less where you have to go around the level and kill static test dummies where the goal is to get all 9 in under 50 seconds...but it's laughable to think anyone would want to be pay $10 for something like that. Disappointed that I'm not going to be able to enjoy this game :(
Seemed like a neat game, however it's Online only and no servers active. RIP.

This game had a good idea, and seems like it could be incredibly fun... However, this game is the cautionary tale of why I never buy something without a single player option. When I started it there were a few players and servers running this still. However, those playing it had so much more experience than I with it that there was no way for me to advance, and quickly, even those players left the game and there were no servers available. If this game had a single player option, it could breathe life into it again, as you wouldn't be dependent upon other players wanting to play at the exact same time as you.
This is all especially true for an Indy game such as this. Without the big budget of other games, you are not going to attract the crowd base that is required for a good multiplayer game in the first place.
Great visuals, I really liked it. Unfortunately you can't play it anymore (no single player and thare are no servers online) so I can't recommend it.

Don't buy. Game is dead. BUT. It was amazing when it had players. Very nice aiming system. You don't just point in their direction like a twin stick shooter. You have to put the crosshair on them to hit them. So basically you could shoot an outline around someones body on all sides without hitting them. Rewards good aim. Great concept. I hope they pull themselves up by the bootstraps and keep doing work like this. Poor marketing/bad release window dooms a lot of good games. Titanfall 2 seems to be the go to example. Amazing game. Flopped on launch due to Titanfall 1 sucking and so many games coming out the same month like Battlefield 1.

Since I've bought this game years ago, once in a while I see The Showdown Effect in my library and think "I wish I could have played it.". But it's not easy to play if there is no one to play with. Still giving thumbs up for cool concept, but do not buy this game.
I'm sad for people who buy this dead game after 2013.

Игра хороша, НО к сожалению минусов больше чем плюсов. обидно что Разработчики не уделяют нужного вниманию мелочам. Столько возможностей и не каких действий, ЖАЛЬ!

It's pretty decent, and I'd recommend it to people. Best bought if you have a couple of friends that want to have a fast 2D reflex brawl-ithon. Sadly last, few time I played, online was basically dead, and anyone who was online were well practiced veterans or a noobs (like me) so it was difficult to really get into it.

Game is one of the best ones i have ever played! tho it has alot of problems,Dead player base,shop is gone down and you can`t buy stuff from it anymore,there is no CO-OP nor LAN host,The only way to get this thing out of this is by making it alot cheaper 3-5 euro (free to play would not do much too),alot of space (and reasons) for cheating and its easy to do so,except if devs actually update anticheat *if there is any*,they have to fix that "peer to peer" hosting type which is just.. but overall if you have friends to play with its an awesome game <3 ofc add me if you are EU TSE player!
