This is a mobile-ported dungeon crawler, bringing with it the cons you'd expect from such a port - namely very simple combat (it's essentially *click* *click* *click* to attack with your weapon of choice, and then *gulp* health potions) and a UI with large icons generally used for touchscreens. Nevertheless, it's a short dungeon romp and the game shines in its quests, generally offering a twist and having more than one solution, even if it's just a choice between A and B dialogue option or between Kill X or Y. The story was interesting enough to keep me engaged for 16 hours. Given its low price and being a short game, I recommend this if you're looking for a "coffee break" turn based dungeon crawler.
Fun game. Totally worth your time. Gets pretty tedious around half way through. Played and restarted several times. Never finished the game. Got bored and moved on.
Yes
I played it on android a bunch and got it later on steam, so my hours on here dont really reflect how much ive played. Its a competent and enjoyable old school dungeon crawler. The art is crisp, the characters are interesting, and everything works as intended. You can get different stories for it and if you are looking for a good ol role playing game with this vibe then this is pretty good for it.
Disappointing experience overall. The game starts off somewhat weak and unfortunately declines further as you progress. The main issue is that a large portion of your character’s power comes from items that are primarily obtained through shops. This creates two problems: first, you often need to grind for money because normal gameplay provides very little of it; second, players may feel encouraged to repeatedly reload the game to refresh shop inventories until a desired item appears.
Neither of these mechanics is particularly satisfying on its own, and together they make progression feel more tedious than engaging.
Another issue is that simply maxing out the weapon skill is not enough. Even if you fully enchant your equipment and focus those enchantments on boosting the same weapon skill, it still doesn’t feel sufficient. On top of that, you’re expected to rely heavily on potions. Since weak, medium, and strong versions stack, you can drink them in sets of three, but their effects last only a short time. In practice this means constantly consuming potions, which in turn requires repeatedly resetting shop inventories to obtain them. And this is in addition to the usual mana and healing potions.
It’s not that ordinary enemies are particularly dangerous, but combat becomes very slow. Instead of defeating an enemy in three or four attacks, it often takes ten or twenty, which quickly becomes repetitive. For example, an orc appears: you attack, pause; it attacks, pause. It barely damages you, but you also deal very little damage in return.
The system can become even more cumbersome because you end up needing separate gear sets for combat, alchemy, enchanting, and other activities. Each of these requires more shop resets and more money grinding. Because of this, the initial Might & Magic-style feeling fades fairly quickly and is replaced by a rather tedious gameplay loop.
- So fun to play, rating 98/100
old school rgp seviyorsanız akıcak bir oyun, ama oyuna bakınca herkese hitap etmediğini görebilirsiniz zaten oyun oldukça eski, ben şahsen zevk alarak oynadım.
TAVSİYE: eğer zorlanmak istemiyorsanız direk ağır zırh ve ağır silah kullanan bir savaşçı yapın, büyücü oynayacam diyosanız Allah kolaylık versin :)
just a simple rpg to kill the time. love the retro vibe
This in the best old school rpg among new and old ones.
Simple systems, charming vibes, well written dialogues, tons of content, fenomenal progression and some interesting choices to make.
If you like this kind of games I suggest also “Orcs & Elves” for the Nintendo DS (no open world but very fun) or “Fighting Fantasy” for the Nintendo DS: vibes, fenomenal dialogues and cool gameplay progression systems as well but smaller and real time combat.
I like the exploration and all the activities you can do in the world
Its a shame the combat is not more in-depth, the story is also incredibly forgettable
The game in general feels very generic and has one of the ugliest artstyles ive ever seen, i think it simply hits a soft spot in my love for Dungeon Crawlers
I've never found anything else like this game. It's like they took Elder Scrolls and made it into a turn-based, grid-based masterpiece. The aesthetic is great.
I thought I was going to LOVE this game. But honestly? It's pretty uninspired.
I'm sure when this game came out on iOS initially it was a banger, but on PC? In Current Year? There's so many other games in the same price point with inspired worlds, deeper mechanics, better writing, a better UI - I could go on. I played for a few hours and my character is done. Finished. The build is just going to simply get better at everything I already do with nothing actually new being added. The enemy health pools will go up and my damage will also go up to compensate. But there's nothing left to discover. I'd skip this game unless you have a lot of nostalgia for it.
The Quest
I beat this entire game on my phone in 2010.
i reccomend making a 'first character' to get a grasp on what's useful and what isnt (like how lockpicking is 100% worthless, and alchemy isnt worth leveling up manually, but is worth using) and generally getting a feel for the combat and whatnot, then restarting for a proper 'run' of the game. a fun tip: save every point for skills you get on level up, run through the entire game leveling up skills you want via the merchants... and then towards the end of the game, dump all those points into your high tier skills to make them even more high tier!
Great game.
Some wonky mechanics an early game difficulty can make this difficult to get into.
If you give it a chance I'm confident it won't disappoint.
+1
I wanted to give this game a thumbs up. It’s always fun leveling up and buying gear in an environment that’s easy on the eyes. But there’s a real lack of care and sophistication in the quests that ends up making this game feel like slop. For instance, early on you get a quest to basically kidnap a particular child to work for the government. I did a little extra legwork to find a weird kid who actually wanted the job, but then the quest just insta-failed with no recourse to fix things. So the whole thing felt like a waste of time, and anything that seemed like a choice really was no choice at all, but just an opportunity to break a quest. Another quest invovled an orc blocking a bridge who wanted you to find an orc-god statue he dropped in the river. I searched around for a while, then I used my big brain to determine that some goblin fishermen in the nearby village had probably already found the statue. I talked to them… nothing. So am I really just supposed to wander around and find this goofball’s item? I ended up wishing I’d just paid him off, but, of course I couldn’t walk the convo back to that point, so the quest was on rails. I had already seen other quests kind of borked at that point so I just gave up.
Ultimately this comes down to the same problem a lot of games have: You guys need a writer on deck. I know you think if you can code a game, then you can write a story, but you just can’t. A storyteller uses a completely different kind of brain than a game dev uses, and if you don’t have a writer, then odds are good your game is going to feel generic even if it looks spectacular.
I get what the devs were going for, but the turn-based combat makes the game borderline unplayable, especially for a melee-focussed character. It is just clunky, and feels unfun to play as you get locked in place as your enemies take their turn. Once enemy spellcasters wade into the game you are a sitting duck as you get sieged by powerful spells, poisoned, paralyzed, plagued, cursed, etc. etc. and because I specced my character a certain way, my ranged abilities are gimped and bows are garbage, so I can't fight back. LoSing enemies only goes so far, especially in the open-world. If you want an old-school experience with no quality of life and the odds stacked entirely against you, go ahead. For the record, I reached the Fen of Death, , surrounded by witches and flying eyes slinging poison and fireballs at me, before I ragequit. I hope you have more fun than I did.
The Quest — стильная олдскульная RPG в духе Might & Magic.
An awesome 20-30 hour old-school open world grid-based turn-based RPG that doesn't overstay its welcome. Excellent and funny dialogue writing, genuinely engaging story, overpowered builds and excellently designed world and puzzles. The world feels very lived in and is full of NPCs, quests and roleplay opportunities. The 2D sprites are all beautifully hand-drawn and the game is oozing with character.
Sometimes it can feel a bit unfair if you don't want to be a jack of all trades, and some enemies rely a bit too much on magic. And since everyone gets a turn during combat and enemies don't attack very quickly, this can make some of the larger dungeons drag on a bit. You also definitely have to enjoy grid-based movement, as the entire game is turn based including open world exploration, but it moves fluidly outside of combat. Just remember, there's no way to move diagonally in this game.
Overall, the price of this game is insane. Don't even bother waiting for a sale, it's more than worth it already. The DLC is awesome too! If you want to take it on the go, it's available on mobile.
8/10
3/10
I have no idea what's happening or why I own this game. In the end, I got stuck between an enemy and a wall and mouse1-clicked myself dead.
gameplay is nice. It's a game I leave on and tab back into when I'm thinking about other stuff passively. The writing is actual poison and I think you're best off not reading any of it.
-You find orc slavers with human slaves and are unable to fight them. All orcs deserve to die, but especially those who are hurting your own race.
-You find a bartender who is getting children drunk, locking them in a room and selling them into slavery. Can't tell the guards, can't kill him. you can only bribe him and be mocked for being a ♥♥♥♥♥.
-you come around a corner in a high level area, get punched unconscious by a guard and teleported to jail where the only way to win the trial is by lying.
again this is mental poison. I understand some of the terrible quests are because it's simpler to have a railroady braindead quest but these quests shouldn't exist. they don't make you feel like a hero, they demean you, insult your morality as a person. Consuming content like this is unhealthy. You should get to feel like a hero in a fantasy game. It would be just as easy to have simple quests where you get asked to go slay a dangerous monster. There's no financial/time excuse, only the depression and sick perspective of the writer.
but again, gameplay is fun so... I guess there's that.
Great Grid-Based RPG, with lots of Content in the Base Game and DLC as well as additional Content in the Workshop.
The Quest is a game that is 20-years back-ward in quality-of-life despite being very-charming to the point of rivaling absolute-classics like Wizardry 8 and Might And Magic 3. Perhaps not in sheer-scale but definitely in heart!
Its down-fall however are its quality-of-life features. You can't Tab between buy and sell modes in stores; use any keys to play the card game; select favorite spells so navigating the magic menu is very clunky as a mage who has to use it often...
You can't even easily see if a shop item is an upgrade or not to your gear without leaving the trading screen; the shop screen; entering your inventory; selecting the slot in question and then reversing the process again back to the trade screen, for every item and purchase you'll ever make. If Final Fantasy 6 could do it in 1994, what's the excuse 20 years later?
This may sound trivial and it is but when every-thing is just that clunky and could so easily and obviously be improved-upon, it makes the 50 hours ahead of me in this adventure look like an exercise in unnecessary frustration rather than an epic journey!
None of those things are hard to implement. An experienced programmer could add them individually in an hour and still have time left to brew a coffee. Being inspired by retro-classics isn't an excuse, Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have a 90% score because it decided to keep the out-rageously bad companion-AI for the sake of fidelity! If the creators don't have an hour to add standard features that have been common-place in RPGs for 2 decades, why should I spent 50 hours in their game?
I can't fault any-one who disagrees with me. 4$ at 50%-off is very-fair for the amount of content and charm here. The issue is that when the engine-implementation is so out-dated that it makes me want to replay any number of classic CRPGs and JRPGs instead, it becomes hard to recommend The Quest even for free, despite its abundant charm and vast world!
What I do like about it, other than what has already been mentioned:
* Single-hero turn-based combat. Huge and a dream come-true! You can get one or the other in literally every other RPG but when you don't want to juggle 3-6 characters at once and just chill and grind and explore this feels absolutely perfect!
* I can't believe I'm saying this but the generic european medieval setting feels like a breath of fresh air, genuinely! After going bronze-age in Tyranny; grim-dark heavy-metal in Rogue Trader... the plain-old back-to-basics setting comes full-circle!
* I obviously have not got any-where near a second play-through but from what I've read in the forum the replay-value is implemented properly, so that many play-styles are possible with different routes through the game, even if they're not dramatically different from each other. That said, an internal or external randomizer would have gone a long way into me keeping this game and it's a shame that the data-format used internally is needlessly hostile to one being created.
If you were one of those godly-patient gamers who powered through the ancient-interfaces of early Ultima and Wizardry titles for the sheer joy of exploring the secrets within a digital game-world and the glory of claiming victory against it dozens of hours later; and are still willing to do it all-over again in 2025, you will find The Quest an absolute steal at 50%-off!
All else should probably stay with the safer recommendations like Vaporum and Grim-rock. I may sound like a snob to some but I really am not. I wrote my own extensive journal when playing Rogue Trader just last-year and had already started to do the same with this game. I don't mind some amount of house-keeping but missing key QOL features that were common even in games from the 90s (even many that were considered clunky back then) isn't justified by any amount of nostalgia.
Would love to come-back to this after some easy UI fixes but the authors have stated they're not interested in adding new features to The Quest. Good-luck and have-fun to the brave who enter the journey but I doubt most folk would want to.
I always come back to this game, it scratches a nostalgic itch and constantly sits in my mind in a happy place. The art, feeling and music is all very charming. It's a single character grid-based dungeon crawler which has you running around a vast world map fulfilling quests and discovering secrets and many occasions of wandering into an area you really shouldn't be in yet, heh.
It is classic old school fun and not to be missed for any dungeon crawler fans.
Back in a simpler time, when the computer games didn't hold your hand and visuals took a back seat to story telling, there existed games like this. Whenever I get an itch to dip into nostalgia, this is the kind of game that I'm looking for. Simple graphics that allow your imagination to fill in the blanks, rich characters and world building, difficult combat without being overly complicated and so much more. If I had one complaint it would be that if you aren't leveling alchemy, then the ingredients you collect can give you a small fortune. I have had more than enough money for potions, equipment upgrades and so on. With all the potions I can carry lining my pockets, I don't really need to worry about dying, or at least I shouldn't, but the game does a great job of ramping up difficulty and keeping you on your toes if you aren't careful. The only other complaint I have is a minor one. When you load up the game and click continue, you will start the game wherever you left off rather than at your last saved location. While not inherently bad, and in fact somewhat helpful, this has lead to me having to quit back to the main menu to load up my last save more than a few times. Ultimately, in this time of fast paced combat and complicated controls, this slower, less straightforward game is a breath of fresh air. If you are looking for some classic RPG fun that'll challenge you, this is the game for you!
I've only played this an hour and give it a 10/10.
I feel like I'm playing Meridian 59 on an Amiga.
That's pretty much all there is that needs to be said. The early 90s music vibes are combined with early 90s CRPG graphics that are very tastefully high-def'd.
It has the exact right feels. Looking forward to blasting through this over the weekend and seeing how far I get.
Multiple races, different class/skill builds, different quest choices and outcomes, all within the first hour. Some games take 10+ hours to let you know they don't suck. This one did it in minutes lol.
Worth every penny.
I rarely review games, but The Quest merits an exception. It’s a solo-developed, grid-based, turn-based RPG that channels classics like Wizardry and Might & Magic. You run a single character. That means no party management, and the build options are deeper than they first appear.
The world is vast, packed with dungeons, secrets, quests, and loot. Combat is satisfying, yet enemy spells hit hard. So carry plenty of resist potions whether you play melee, magic, or a hybrid. And on that note potion-spamming is a MUST.
NPCs are distinctive and the quests engaging, though the writing occasionally drifts into four-paragraph lore dumps that could be two sentences. Minor quibble aside, if you miss old-school “blobber” RPGs, The Quest is an easy recommendation. I've got over 150 hours in on mobile and moving to PC, I'll likely catch up to that number soon. There's just something about the game's vibe that draws me back in.
End notes:
The official DLC is solid, but community-made expansions are wildly unbalanced and ignore the base game’s economy. So as a person who enjoys playing games but doesn't give a crap about fandom, skip them unless you enjoy meh-level chaos.
The main overworld theme is a near-match for System of a Down’s “Lonely Day.” Give it a listen and compare; the similarity is striking.
This Game to me would be like if tes Morrowind and Dungeon Hack had a baby. Wonderful game!! I know it says less than a day but I've played it off and on for several years now even though I've not beaten it yet. And it's on mobile too and for the price absolutely heck yeah. Fans of old school dungeon crawlers or old school open world rpgs this is right up your ally, like me. lol
Old school style RPG like eye of the beholder! But beware it is very tough in places.
awesome
:)
I have played this game on and off for several years. I love it and keep coming back to it.
Super jeu!
The game has this overall quality, which makes you wanna check out everything in it's open world. Add to that lot's of side quests and freedom to explore and do things your way, combined with by thus creating a hero all your own, and you get a great game, that'll keep you entertained for hours!
I can't give this game a negative review because it's an old school first person TBS that scratches the Might and Magic / Wizardry itch. People applaud the effort of one developer to create this. While it's commendable, it's also stupid, because you can easily see the failings of a team too small: many fetch quests, lots of backtracking on foot, questionable story and lack of content towards an anti-climatic end. I finished in 33 hours in hard (incl AFK), but the game should have lasted 15 instead because there isn't that much content. Everything else is just uneccessary hoops you have to jump through to progress. It's nice, just .. average.
The game has nice respawning fauna, dungeons and actually quite unique plethora of quests. I am quite surprised. Several DLCs, extensions are there and you can also buy the game on your mobile device and play it there (google play). Its quite unpopular, but very high quality.
Very old school grid based movement. Reminds me of the the old Might and Magic or Dungeon Master games. The mechanics are pretty easy to understand and I'm really enjoying it. Definitely not a game for people who hate reading a lot of text. It is a lot like the Doom RPG, or Orcs and Elves, if you've played those. Everything is based on turns. That means moving, using a potion, casting a spell, or attacking uses a turn. Enemies also move right after you do. So you have to be aware of what's around you or you can get surrounded.
Nogurs kradną, heh.
Ya like old school, grid based dungeon crawlers?
Ya like open world game?
Ya like this game!
The quest is a weirdly charming old school rpg ported from mobile. There’s some interesting writing and a huge open world and a lot of systems such as alchemy similar to a Bethesda game.
The graphics are a cool kind of fmv esque stale unfortunately hampered a bit by using only one model for npcs in town.
The combat is pretty boring pretty much just clicking but can at times require strategy such as chugging a potion when fighting something outside of your level. But it is fun just expect it to be a lot more basic than something like wizardry
The writing is probably the strongest point the game has and it is quite unconventional and funny but also often a bit underbaked in terms of payofff and character motivation.
Some things about the game are just bad your character automatically firing arrow if you click on the screen when the bow is equipped. Did this by accident in town and wound up getting arrested even though you can’t hurt npcs
The map is also quite bad very little is marked and you can add notations but that feels like a band aid on not being able to find npcs. This isn’t like a reimagining with improved qol this is like below qol of games of an older era.
I think it’s worth checking out if you are a fan of this genre but definitely a little rough
wow game of the century bro
A fun RPG worth checking out imo. It has a lot to offer and is charming in many ways, although it certainly doesn't hold your hand. I've always found the early game to be fairly difficult and even a little tedious, but once you have a proper build and equipment it's enjoyable.
I really want the card mini-game to be its own separate app; I've spent quite a while just playing that because it's so entertaining!
A delightful journey into old-school dungeon crawling.
classic retro grid based first person dungeon crawler but pretty boring compared to others. Searching containers can be deadly if you are carrying a ranged weapon. If you are not facing in a specific direction you will instead shoot your weapon and possibly hit a civilian, causing you to pay a 500gp fine AND perma lose weapon skill doing less damage. Many quests require you to run backwards and forwards and you are not guaranteed to succeed the quest. You go cash it in and it might fail anyway due to perhaps your charisma not being high enough. So your hours of running back and forth is a waste of time.
Fighting animation is very basic and when enemies die they just vanish. which is a bit meh
Very open and expansive open world rpg. There's a huge amount of stuff to do, its one of those games where nothing stops you from coming to the last city/dungeon of the game right at the start, and i love that kind of stuff.
The problems that drag it down is the fact that over half of the quests are written like the author is taking the piss, i would prefer it taken itself a bit more seriously. and another problem is the combat system. You fight stuff a lot and the combat is very unbalanced. You have the classic swords/bows/magic trifecta, and then you get magic wands which are essentially guns, and the ammo is very cheap, becoming completely free by the midgame. It's as broken as it sounds.
I like walking around in dungeons and exploring the world, but those 2 things keep irking me. Nonetheless, its a nice rpg to waste time with.
Awful, annoying controls. Childish. Boring.
"Enter a beautifully hand-drawn world full of mystery!"
The only mystery here is why you never implemented autosaves...
"Oh, just pay attention and manually save." I do, but then I get immersed in your game and forget because I'm distracted by essay pages of lore/dialogue, figuring your quests out with no real direction, and figuring out the awkward map.
Very glad this game is as high maintenance as it is...
Might&Magic 6-8 like, quite good, but too easy so far.
Return to fantasy childhood
In an era of flashy graphics and complex mechanics, The Quest stands as a nostalgic tribute to the golden age of role-playing adventures. Originally released for mobiles and later remastered for PC, this hand-drawn world embraces old-school design principles, featuring grid movements and turn-based combat that hark back to classics like Daggerfall, Ultima, and Might and Magic.
Studio Redshift has crafted a game that feels both familiar and refreshing, inviting to explore the kingdom of Monares with the freedom to forge your own path through a richly detailed world. The Quest‘s charm lies not just in its core gameplay but also in overall style and presentation. Hand-drawn environments, primitive 3D, and character sprites designs combined with 1990s lyrical music evoke a sense of nostalgia. This attention to detail creates an immersive experience that encourages exploration and experimentation, reminiscent of the way early RPGs rewarded players for their curiosity.
The game’s structure allows for both lengthy sessions and quick runs, while staying true to its roots. Although The Quest may not innovate within the genre, it still excels in delivering a polished, enjoyable story for all RPG enthusiasts. So if you are one of them, yearning for a taste of a fantasy retro journey, The Quest is an adventure worth embarking on.
And a friendly tip at the end: be sure to save some rotten food and contaminated water along your play. You’ll thank yourself later when given one particular mission in the undead city. Otherwise, you risk spending a dozen frustrating days searching for goods crucial for further story progression.
Generally decent and has some charm but lots of frustrations. Combat becomes more and more of a slog throughout the game as enemies rely more on range--the player seems to "go last" so chasing/closing distance is miserable, and ranged damage output is just not feasible. Status effects that never go away without consuming resources. I thought enemies never respawned which gives the world a dead feeling, but they actually do after like a full ingame month. Plants never respawn though (which is actually okay because picking up alchemy ingredients constantly just feels like busywork)! Lots of goofy/arbitrary quest results. The good/evil axis in practice is "doing quests/pickpocketing" and the Crime system is a disaster (mainly because you just accrue Crime for no logical reason related to certain quests). Painfully slow combat turns with a huge input buffer means accidents are easy. Solution to more than one quest is "clicking on tile with evidently nothing in it." Tavern gambling game is an unbelievably poorly conceived Magic the Gathering clone, wish it was just a "realistic" simple medieval type game. I think if these issues were reconsidered for the in-progress sequel it'll be solid.
This is an excellent game, extremely fun and well thought out. I am looking forward to playing the expansion.

Delivering slightly better on the combat experience 'The Quest' would have been a far more interesting world to explore despite it's many other limitations.
I wanted to like this and kept trying to get into it because there are some good ideas here, but I ended up finding it incredibly boring and was put off by some baffling design decisions.
I'll get the negative out of the way first. Combat is boring. Click attack until the enemy is dead or you're low on health and need to use potions or magic to heal. The two weapon slots make it easy to swap between a bow for ranged combat and a melee weapon when an enemy is in range, but for outdoor combat enemies will tend to stay just out of your line of arrow fire so often times you might only get one or two shots in with the bow before you have to switch to melee. The variety of weapons and equipment are nice, but they're all functionally the same, lacking any upgrades/abilities to make the choice of a weapon type interesting. The world is full of so many potion ingredients that you'll always be able to throw together more health and mana potions than you could possibly need.
The worst parts of the game that I found were the writing and quests. It wasn't all bad; most of the major quests and dialogue were fine. But dialogue with certain characters, especially the 'ladies of the night', was uncomfortable. There was also a random fortune teller who, for five gold, would tell you about the best ways to be intimate with members of each astrological sign, which was weird. And it only gets worse with quests. In the first town you meet a nobleman who tells you that his wife has been kidnapped for ransom by bandits and that he wants you to get her back (by force, if necessary) and he'll give you half the ransom. When you speak with her, she gushes about how hot the bandits who kidnapped her are, complains about her awful husband, and says she's happy there. When you talk to the bandit leader, he gives you an alternate quest to get the ransom money from the nobleman. When you talk to the nobleman, he says some 'colorful' things about his wife and tells you to get her drunk so she'll go back home. Guess which option is considered the good option... If you guessed 'let the woman stay where she's happy, away from her probably abusive husband' you were wrong. Another quest gives you two options for completing it, but doesn't tell you that one option (the morally better one) requires having a high enough persuade skill. If it's too low you immediately fail the quest with no opportunity to go back later to try again. This might have been fine had the game given any indication of this, but the dialogue during this branch of the quest constantly reinforces that you're doing the right thing and will succeed. One quest requires you to recover a book from a character. The character agrees, but only if you deliver a drink to another character. What the game doesn't tell you is that the drink is poisoned and completing the delivery causes you to commit a crime. Multiple quests required clicking on random spots on the map (usually objects such as puddles or a haystack) to find a hidden item. I've covered about half of the quests I did in the game in this section. I can't imagine it got any better.
The good aspects of the game did keep me interested for a few hours. The skill system is fun and encourages experimentation. I was playing a ranger with some healing magic and alchemy and was having a good deal of success sustaining myself in battles I probably wasn't ready for using a combination of potions and healing magic. You can find a variety of different arrows with different effects, giving some interesting options to archers. The world was large and fun to explore, with lots of hidden dungeons and secrets.
Ultimately, the terrible quests and boring gameplay completely turned me off from playing this game further. In looking it up, I see that the game started as a mobile title and was ported to PC along with one of its expansions. Apparently the mobile versions have many, many official expansions. I know I seem to have the minority opinion, so if you do decide to get the game, I'd recommend trying to pick it up for mobile instead.
decent old school game sort of like a better version of lands of lore
It's a very solid old school CRPG, if you see the screenshots and think "Hey I like games like this" you will like it.
A great Old school game that´s actually good, so yes.
Grid based movement is a bit tiresome these days but aside from that this is a great game. If you're looking for an open world old school dungeon crawler packed with quests then this is a fantastic buy.
Great game if you f=grew up on old RPGs and loved them.
Would have been a nice game with a full party of 6 or 4, the solo thing limits skills and utility too much. I loved the old school vibe for a while though, until I realised its just a shallow mobile game trying to cash in on nostalgia for 90's RPG's
If, like me, you spent countless hours as a kid playing grid based RPG games in the 90s (Might and Magic, Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder and similar) then this game is a must have for oldschool RPG fans. I've spent 50+ hours playing The Quest and addons on iPad and it's great to have it on PC too.
Massive RPG!, old school sword, sorcerery, and adventure. It's the quintessential RPG feeling. Definitely try it just take it for what it is, an old school grid dungeon crawler.
Port of an IOS mobile game that began it's life for PALM devices if you can believe it. It's simple yet satisfying. You spend more of your time above ground travelling and exploring than in dungeons. There is a fully developed wiki if you get stuck. I did every side quest possible and finished the main story around ~23 hours.
It moves on a grid, so sometimes combat can be a little awkward especially if you're ranged and someone is coming at you from a corner you basically have no chance of hitting them before they're on you. Read up a bit before creating a character as some skills are worthless (looking at you, thief premade class).
Very nice drawn game
The earnest graphics are charming but the quests are sleazy.
I want to like this game because I ordinarily love grid-based dungeon crawlers. However, it has some tedious game mechanics that detract from the exploration and combat. Managing alchemy ingredients, limited bow ammunition and equipment durability all slow down the action and make too much time in the inventory, not enough time exploring and adventuring.
This game is pretty intuitive for the most part making it easy to get into but it won't hold your hand. Great aesthetic, nice variety of spells.
Nah. Being "retro" doesn't excuse a boring combat system, non-existent AI, lifeless towns, meaningless dialogues, tedious item management, monotonous sound design, or repetitive gameplay loops. There are 40 year old computer RPGs with better game design. Better pick up one of the classics than this modern reimagination.
This game is sooo good.
It took me a couple hours to really get into it.
Reminds me those old school RPG i was used to play in the 90s, except that it is better.
It is open ended world with many quest and a great game play with tons of exploration.
So far I have spent around 2h playing the "Not-Hearthstone" Cardgame at the Tavern. Worth it alone for that and the beautiful music and visuals! Will hopefully keep playing the "actual" game xD
Bisher sehr gutes Spiel, welches mich stark an meine Kindheit erinnert.
Man will aufleveln, die härteren Gegner easier besiegen.
A nice little adventure with a generic name befitting it's strong handling of RPG fundamentals. Sort of a turn-based take on the more open-ended exploration popular in the Elder Scrolls series, but probably with better writing and a tighter focus. The world is big, but it is neither empty nor so big that you end up wandering for ages going from one town to another.
Every skill and system in the game feels useful, with crafting enchanted equipment, brewing potions, and all manner of status effects serving as legitimate and valuable aspects of the game. While you can hyper-specialize, you don't really get the sense that you "chose wrongly" with regards to how you built your character due to the lack of "dead skills" that don't really contribute to your journey.
The economy is also shockingly good, with gold freely flowing into and out of your coffers at an alarming rate. With skill trainers, equipment, and tons of expendable gear to purchase you never lose the excitement of finding a cache of gold or a rare gem to sell (at least I haven't 25 hours into the game and well into the Fire and Ice expansion).
The combat could be a bit better, as it often devolves into a bit of a slugfest, and some of the status conditions can be a pain in the ass (catching herpes off a mummy for the dozenth time is a pain in the ass), but larger fights with powerful enemies will have you carefully charting your plan of attack and using the environment to your advantage so thats cool.
Best RPG I have ever played. Takes me back to my childhood when I used to play this on my parents' iphone.
Had it in my library for years. Decided to play it for a few minutes to see what it was like today. I didn't play just a few minutes....
This is one of those rare games that goes above and beyond when looking at value. A $10 game that I have over 21hrs in at the time of writing. I am certain I am going to get many more hrs out of it as well.
Is this worth the price of admission? Absolutely. Kind of like a simplified version of a cross between Daggerfall and the early Might and Magic games. Both of which I loved.
Thanks devs. Looking forward to #2. Please don't leave me hanging. :)

I have been on a first person dungeon crawler kick and stumbled across this game.
I wasn't prepared for one of the best crpgs I've played.
My favorite parts are the alchemy and enchantment systems. You can truly create any kind of build you want, because if you mess up somewhere, you will always be able to compensate with potions and enchantments.
I read that the devs are working on a sequel with a different name. I already know that it will be real time, which I am skeptic about. But I sincerely hope the leveling, alchemy and magic/enchantments stay largely the same because they are legendary.
Don't judge my low hour count, I sunk 5 hours in my first sitting. Haven't had a game do that to me in a long time.
Nice, and all the expansion packs are available
The game promises a "huge world". I was halfway through the game when I realized what I assumed was the tutorial island was the entire game. The gameplay is fine, but I expected more.
one of the greatest mobile games ever especially for an RPG
Thank you Redshift for this good RPG. I finished the main quest. It was a pleasure to discover and explore the Freymore island!

Prostitute told me she'd only help me if I was wanted by the guards. I smacked her with my sword and then talked to her again. It worked. 10/10 RPG.
First playthrough of base adventure won with Undead BattleMage kind of class. Very fun experience! Going to replay it with a living class and then transfer it into the various DLCs that are available. Also the creator kit is fun too! Make your own worlds with your own graphics and NPCs. Good times.
Quite similar to Might and Magic VI - IIX, though not quite as good. Still, it is fun and worth trying if you loved those classics.
Charming Old School Dungeon Crawler.
I had alot of fun. Reminded me of the old school stuff with a modern flair.
This game has stuck to the script when it comes to design choices that are considered to be absolutely ANCIENT (yet simple and functional) by modern standards, however that results in some genuinely funny moments, can serve as a great inspiration if you are that aspiring indie/solo game dev who is not confident enough about just start making your first game. It's a game that is not afraid of itself, where you know the designer just went about making it without overthinking and being doubtful of his or her abilities or other conditions that might hinder or limit its production.
It may seem as if I've hardly played this game - but nothing could be further from the truth. This game has a long history, from the PDA and iPod to Steam, and I've played the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game over the years. All I can say is that Redshift is awesome, and you should get this game if you like old school RPGs!
Can't wait for the quest 2
Very fun old timey RPG if you were into Might & Magic, Bard's Tale, Wizardry and/or Ultima in the day. I really love to min/max in games and come up with build strategies and as simplistic a stat/skill system as this game has, this game absolutely scratches that itch very well.
I would recommend going through the core game and then the official Redshift DLC first before buying any of the Zarista content. Any gear you get in any of those will over simplify the main game. Think of the unofficial DLC's as end game, not unlike OP levels or Mayhem levels in the Borderlands series.
My one complaint in the game actually pertains to the Zarista games content. Just finding really overpowered gear on the ground all the time really does take away a lot of the games immersion. Do consider better ways of finding or questing for gear in the sequel. Everything else is very well done, though!
