Used to love the Strongholds series as a kid. But now I see it haven't aged very well. Most of the gameplay itself is fine, but there are two major factors why I give it a negative review and its the AI. It's either terrible or cheating like crazy. One game I played 2v1 where one of the AI lords manage to segregate almost all of his production buildings so they couldn't be reached. Needles to say he wasn't very challenging opponent. The other made one push, but he also didn't do a very good job in getting his economy in order, so after beating the first "attack" he kind of just sat in his base the rest of the game.
Another I played 1v1v1v1. Starting from Freeman, the lowest starting where you basically have access to any buildings. One AI lord had managed to amass about 100 spearunits and kept producing. Was able to afford atelast 5 catapults. All with NO market and only one poleturnern and about 4-5 foodbuildings. Where as the others was still struggling to get their economy going. How is this possible?
It's a dice roll if you are going to end up with A. Terrible AI, B Cheating like crazy AI or C, actually decent doing AI.

The second reason is unit numbers. For the love of god Firefly its 2026, let us increase unit numbers if we feel like it.

После прохождения 100 миссий в Stronghold Crusader в пути крестоносца, в которых надо просто строить и обороняться, я надеялся получить что-то похожее и здесь. Но нет, в каждой кампании есть миссии со сраным штурмом, где тебе дают определённое количество войск, и твоя задача ими отбиться или штурмануть противника. Да, такое же было и в первой Stronghold, да, кому-то этот геймплей нравится, но всё же я надеялся, что разрабы не будут пихать его в каждую кампанию.

Ладно, а теперь серьёзно...

Stronghold 2 вышел в далёком 2005-м году (на секундочку игре уже более двух десятка лет). Но даже в 2026-м в неё играет довольно много людей и сама игра до сих пор остаётся одной из лучших в тематике Средневековья и градостроительного симулятора. У игры много фишек и всяких разных приколов, которые никого не оставят равнодушным.

Из плюсов игры можно отметить очень бодрый и динамичный геймплей, а также не самую сложную игровую механику к которой можно довольно быстро адаптироваться. Главные плюсы игры это шедевральная русскоязычная озвучка (лучше чем у многих известных фильмов), а также уникальный средневековый вайб. Графика игры также является плюсом, так как даже в 2026-м она выглядит симпатично. Оптимизация у игры также отличная, поэтому даже на средних ПК будет летать на максималках.

Из минусов можно отметить довольно примитивный геймплей по части боёвки и тупой ИИ. Зачастую всё довольно быстро сводится к стремительному накоплению монет и корон, а также созданию огромной армии стрелков, которые выкосят всё живое на поле. Мирная составляющая будет поинтереснее, но опять же стоит помнить, что игра 2005 года, поэтому эти минусы довольно натянуты. Частых вылетов у игры не замечено. Разве что в сетевой встречаются иногда. Сюжетные кампании довольно простые и под конец уже становятся откровенно скучными, так как ИИ очень примитивный и играть против него довольно уныло.

Вообщем учитывая возраст игры ставлю твёрдые 9 из 10. Однозначно одна из лучших игр в тематике средневековых стратегий. До сих пор бывает интересно зайти и поностальгировать. Если вам интересно европейское Средневековье, то однозначно покупайте и играйте (в том числе по сетке с друзьями).

[b]One of the best RTS games ever made.[/b]

The core game itself is still just as good as it always was. Stronghold 2 remains one of the most unique and enjoyable castle-building RTS games ever made.

But there is [b]one gargantuan problem.[/b]

The developers chose not to keep [b]AI enemies in multiplayer Kingmaker mode[/b] for the Steam Edition.

Kingmaker used to be one of the best parts of Stronghold 2 outside of the campaign. You could play on custom maps with friends and also add AI lords into the match, similar to how games like Empire Earth or Age of Mythology allow you to fill a skirmish with computer opponents.

But in the Steam Edition, [b]you cannot add AI enemies to multiplayer Kingmaker games.[/b]

So what does that mean in practice?

• You can play the campaign
• You can play multiplayer with real players
• But you [b]cannot add AI lords to multiplayer matches[/b]

This used to be a very common way people played the game — teaming up with friends and fighting AI enemies together.

For an RTS game, [b]being able to include AI opponents in multiplayer matches is a basic feature.[/b] Stronghold 2 originally supported this, and it was one of the most fun ways to experience the game.

For years now the fanbase has been asking the developers to restore this feature to the Steam Edition, but it has never been fixed.

[b]Still a fantastic classic, but this Steam Edition is missing one of its most important features.[/b]

As much as it pains me to put [b]"Not Recommended"[/b] on one of my favorite RTS games of all time, I cannot recommend the Steam Edition because of this.

Firefly — even paying other developers to solve the issue would be better than leaving the fanbase without a feature that used to be a core part of the game.

I got stuck on the one not even half way through the game, its almost impossible, so I gave it up. I don't like scenarios that are castle rush and all your guys get killed even on easy? Balance issues aside its still a good game if someone fixes it.

I have played this game since it launched with a box copy. So many memories made during this time in my life. I have also played almost every installment of stronghold to the latest and i keep coming back to this one. It is so very well made and it has its quirks. I will forever recommend this to anyone how loves RTS or CITY BUILDERS.
