Well, my experience of the game is limited, as I can't just play it, due to something about game's graphics straining my eyes. Graphics do look good, game play is fine and voice acting is good. But...my eyes just can't handle this game. So, I won't be continuing it. For those who do not have such sensitive eyes, and who like story rich game, sure, I can recommend it.

A small preface: this is not some review bomb from a Microslop hater. You can check my playtime, my achievements, to see that I have went through the game rather thoroughly.

South of Midnight occupies this awkward spot between AAA blockbusters, with thousands of man-hours and millions of green bills poured into it, with a matching price-tag attached to it; where you expect (and frequently fail to receive) the quality fitting the RSP. Games designed by a committee and PR department, with any "friction" sanded off in an attempt to satisfy the widest possible audience. And, on the other side of the spectrum, small indie productions, where jank and imperfect UX might be overlooked, as you feel the love and dedication poured into that game in buckets. South of Midnight carries this passion and vision in its palm - as its glaring problems. Which, under different circumstances, might be forgiven… but then it also has the “Xbox Games Studios” label attached to it, sort of generating a different set of expectations in regards to its execution. It is a perfect “Double A” game.

And, in a parallel universe, I probably would climb and make my stand on the hill of “there is a place for AA titles” stance, praising the vision of smaller studios under the not-so-protective umbrella of huge corporations. Trying to be as objective as possible, I need to admit South of Midnight is at least a 7/10 product; and, thanks to its own uniqueness, should deserve at least a “buy on sale” recommendation. Soooo why the negative review?

First, let me shower some praise. This game has a most charming (and perhaps somewhat peculiar) art direction. The graphics are - for the calling price - quite gorgeous, with the art style not too dissimilar from that of “We Happy Few” (read: lanky human shapes, exaggerated facial features, saturated colours). The soundtrack is pretty spectacular, while sound direction has already received numerous compliments. All this together merges to create a real love letter towards the so-called “Deep South” of the US, blending various different tropes, biomes, legendariums into a one, 10-15h adventure, wrapped in a “we have Horizon Zero Dawn at home” clothes.

If that comment above sounds sassy…it kind of was supposed to be. South of Midnight shares plenty with the modern take on “adventure / exploration” games, more than just its female protagonist that. simply. can’t. shut. up. sometimes. It is in no way an open world though, and the player progression is limited to a rather simple set of 4 spells and one “general” skilltree. The maps are rather linear, with some hidden exploration; there is some climbing (surprisingly - not using the dreaded “yellow paint”), double-jumping, mandatory para-gliding and even a wee companion to do our bidding. All this is undeveloped compared to its better contemporaries, and rather serves as a simple set-piece for the aforementioned love-letter to the setting, to the protagonist’s story and her adventure.

The thing is… this adventure is fraught with plenty of frustration. Somewhat boring level design, rather repetitive combat and uninspired boss fights were mentioned in the reviews before. But for me the biggest sin of them all are [b] the. most. clunky [/b] controls and camera work I have experienced in the last couple of years. Combat is the biggest victim of it all. There are games, where “action” takes the backseat, compared to a given game story, vibe, art. Yet it is still palatable. Here, it is actually a source of friction, where spotting the next combat area makes one sigh “oh no, not again”. The game apparently has some hidden dice throwing mechanism, deciding when it will react to your prompts, and when it will not. “Oh, did you hit E wishing to untangle that enemy? Bad luck, try again. Oh, I am sorry, I cast the spell instead”. “Oh, you wanted to take control over THAT enemy? Heh, no joy, I targeted this one instead. Should have camera-locked on it instead, sucker! What’s that? That fixed camera is janky and half of the time blocks half of the screen with something else? Well, tough luck boyo”. Well, eefff you too game.

Those little splinters get under your skin as the game progresses; and they are not limited to combat alone, affecting exploration as well, or even finding lore tidbits, that sometimes cant be clicked until you stand in precisely THAT one spot. Worst of all, they sour the overall experience. South of Midnight has some pretty beautiful moments; it can hit you right in the feels. But then it all dissipated like a dream in the morning, because I had to again suffer through some combat encounter; or spend 30 seconds wiggling around a crevasse, until the game allowed me to squeeze through it.

The thing is - continuing with that splinter metaphor, at some point they start festering and infecting the space around them. I realized myself after a while that I started being more critical about other parts of the game - like the story, main character, simply because I felt jarred by the other side of this experience. And that is the biggest shame, since the other aspects of this game do deserve praise. Yet, something has failed, failed big-time in the overall game direction. I cannot say whether it is a skill-issue, a budget shortage, unbreakable deadlines; or all things combined. But at the end, someone has looked at this game and decided “its good for release as it is, customer experience be damned”. That someone, I presume, is Xbox Games.

And because of that - I leave a negative review. Its not a vote of no confidence towards Compulsion Games; in all honesty, I would love to see more stories from that setting, be it with Hazel Flood or without her at the helm. And I am aware that this game has underperformed, most likely negating any chances for a sequel, so leaving a “negative” review is rather counter-productive (as if Phil Spen… pardon, Asha Sharma would be reading individual Steam reviews). Yet, there comes a certain expectation towards a game released under a specific brand. But even worse - I cannot forgive having a rather splendid experience in regards to the world-building, art direction etc., getting spoiled by simple, 2000’s era frustrations with controls and camera work. If Steam would allow it, most likely I would leave a “mixed” review. Since it does not - it is a “thumbs down” one, but with a hearty wish, that Compulsion gets better… as do their corporate overlords.

South of Midnight is a well-crafted narrative dropped in a thematically rich and artistically detailed world. The combat is much less of a draw than the characters and worldbuilding. It is an evocative, narrative-centered experience that is less focused on player agency and mindless aggression and more focused on exploration, empathy, and storytelling. A lot of effort when into layering the mystical South Gothic motif through the art and sound design, and the soundtrack is amazing. Those who want a chill and uncommonly affirmative experience, the game is one of a kind.

So first off the art and music for this game are absolutely amazing. I'm from Southeast Louisiana, and I can say they really managed to capture the magic, mystery, and history of our culture. The story is also absolutely amazing. I found myself immersed and wanting more. It was cool to see our folklore brought to life. The story, art, and music are a 9/10 for me. My only feedback, and issue is that the combat, mechanics, and platforming are repetitive. The general flow for a new area is the same, do x, y, z and predictable. The story is so good and the lore bits throughout really did good world building, but it would of been cool to have more to explore!!! Such a beautiful world, but it was somewhat on rails so to speak akin to a Ratchet and Clank or a Crash game. I think expanding the world simular to God of War could of added more depth. The combat mechanics were neat and interesting, with many different ways to combo and use skills, but there weren't a lot of enemy types to toy with. The boss fights were also a very predictable x, y ,z, repeat flow. Though, I did enjoy them! I would definately like to see the devs take on more games like this but improve the combat and open up the world a bit and change up the flow of things. Predictable isn't bad, because it feels like the game is really just a conduit for the story, but the combat and game world have a lot of potential that is untapped to keep people wanting to come back for more. Overall, I hope people give this game a chance to enjoy the story it tells and get a taste of our Southeastern Louisiana culture. Thank you devs for using this game as a platform to explore our culture and story.

The only thing I can recommend: put it on easy mode so you can do as little combat as possible, and enjoy traversing the world and the story.

Enfin un jeu avec une vraie patte graphique qui sort de l'ordinaire, j'ai trouvé que cela collait super bien à l'histoire. C'est très beau, les décors, les mobs et les boss sont vraiment travaillé. c'est excellent

L'histoire est originale avec une réelle profondeur, je n'en dévoilerais pas plus. Et pour une fois, le personnage féminin n'est pas hyper sexualisé ce que l'on a plus l'habitude de voir

La bande-son est géniale, elle colle hyper bien au phase de jeu avec un sytle jazz new orléan.

Le seul bémol est lors de certaines phases de course sur plateforme, la caméra est un peu moyenne.

Pour 40 balles laissez vous tenter, il est meilleur que certains triple A vendre à 70 balles.

This game is a work of art. Its visuals, voice acting, and music are superb. There were times that the combat was repetitive but the difficulty scaling was enough that I was sweating a bit at times. The story is a masterpiece. It is the first game Ive played where the main character is a poc and the story is deeply ingrained in race and the black experience in America. The themes of intergenerational trauma and learing that your mother is a person with pain and feelings is so raw and beautiful. One of the best games to come out in a long time.

Eine Geschichtenerzählung ohne gleichen , Bildgewaltig , zum eintauchen , nur noch Getopt durch richtig guten Sound während des Spiels . Die Jump and Run einlagen übertreibens hin und wieder , gibt aber nichts was nicht leicht zu schaffen wäre , ist nur ab und zu recht lästig . Wer gerne "Geschichten" spielt und zB. früh Morgens zum Kaffee unterhalten werden will mit ein wenig Action , der ist hier gut aufgehoben . Endlich mal wieder etwas anderes ;)

South of Midnight is a beautifully crafted adventure game with a strong focus on atmosphere and storytelling. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Southern Gothic charm! The stunning claymation art style, incredible soundtrack by Olivier DeRivier, and deeply emotional story are all highlights. It offers some comprehensive accessible options too allowing players to adjust the difficulty or gameplay aspects to suit their needs. Meaning you can breeze through combat if you prefer to soak up the lore and scenery.

Speaking of which, the combat can feel a repetitive and a little basic compared to other aspects of the game, but isn’t overly frustrating. I did also notice the framerate can be considerably unstable at times, seemingly for no reason - it'll bounce all over the place (between 100+ and 30 fps regularly) which was unfortunate as it really does put a blemish on what is otherwise, an optimised game.

Overall: A wonderfully immersive experience and perfect for those who prioritise narrative and atmosphere over intense action. It doesn't overstay its welcome and its impactful journey stands out thanks to its unique setting and artistic presentation. Highly recommended.

A beautiful game with wonderful art direction and background music. The platform puzzles are most of the time great and it rewards you if you explore around a little. Also I like most of the boss battles.

The few gripes I have are that the normal enemies are kinda grindy and repetitive. Sometimes the camera will f-ed you over, especially during chase platform puzzles.

I recommend to turn on Story mode to have the option to skip most of the normal battles when it bores you and enjoy the story.

This game is very pretty to look at and the story is captivating. If you want something linear and self guided, versus a full open world with many side quests, I would recommend this game. The fighting is not as simple as you may think (as a PC player), but the use of magic feels unique. The fights don't feel souls-like but you may need to work a bit to get through the battles.

Beautiful game. The combat does get a little samey, and is not the highlight of the game, but the platforming and the story are interesting and remarkable. I really enjoyed the stop-motion style of the art, and the character designs were often gorgeous to look at. The real star of this is the soundtrack, which is probably why there are, I believe, 2 soundtrack albums available. Olivier DeRivier is always a favorite for a score, and the fact that each of the levels has a song that is delivered verse at a time, as you progress through story points, keeps it interesting and fun. The bosses that have their own songs playing as you proceed are also really nice. As with his Vampyr soundtrack, I have continued to listen to this one after having played the game (and in truth was convinced to start the game based on seeing that he was the composer).

Gran juego, el apartado grafico, personajes son geniales... y la musica simplemente maravillosa. Lo malo: los combates con los enemigos comunes son super repetitivos y tecnicamente no esta tan pulido... muchas veces te vas a ver pegandole al aire. Tiene un sistema de lock on pero no se siente fluido tampoco. Las batallas con los jefes son muy entretenidas, sin agobiar.
Las secciones de plataformas cumplen.. en general se siente un juego al que le falto un poco mas de perfeccion de detalles, pero es un buen juego.

不知道哪个缺德营销号带的节奏，这个游戏怎么变成lgbt神游了？还被各种辱骂，这简直离谱。坦白来讲，我并没有看到有什么lgbt情节，我觉得这就是一个很传统的，美国南方的，关于黑人文化的特殊风格故事。要批判女主长相的，或者是什么黑人的，我更是无法理解了。这简直是批判川菜馆太辣一样。游戏的目的就是讲美国南方的，关于黑人文化的故事，女主不是黑人该是啥？
战斗系统不知道为什么被有些人骂的一文不值，坦白来讲，我真觉得还行。手感。音效都称得上不错，技能也挺好玩，问题是小怪种类较少。Boss战的演出做的尚可，但都谈不上优秀。剧情水平倒没我想想那么好，就是一堆独立的故事，也不深刻，主要的亮点就是完全贴切的音乐，甚至歌词就是这个故事！很遗憾，没有字幕，我真希望我的英文水平高一点。而游戏最大的亮点就是无与伦比的场景和音乐，而且不是那种常见的，至少我在别的游戏里没见过类似风格的。我毫不夸张的认为，午夜以南在2025年tga的奖项中，音乐与美术这块完全可以与33号远征队竞争，而且我不认为他不如后者。

A Well Crafted POORLY OPTIMISED game! Props to the story development team and world designers. Absolutely lived all the boss fights. I see why people comment on repetitive fights (while exploring), but Boss fights are all unique and fun! SOUND TRACK is out of this world!

It's really sad why they just didn't optimise this game well. It's a stuttering hell! Hopefully we get a patch from DEVS.

But so far I absolutely love the game despite poor optimisation.

Неплохая адвенчура на пару вечеров, в необычном сеттинге Южной Готики и стоп-моушн анимации. Главная героиня довольно харизматична и ненадоедлива, художественный стиль и саундтрек потрясающие. Геймплей средненький: нормальный платформинг, боёвка плавная и мобильная, но глубины не хватает категорически. Он тут по сути нужен просто чтобы был повод игру игрой называть. Прокачка ужасная, исследование никакущие. 150 записок без какой-либо навигации собирать никто не будет.
Покритикую разве что техническое состояние и ограничения, отсутствие необходимости в последних четырёх глав (либо нужно было поменять их местами, потому что финал напрашивался сразу после Молли) и отвратительный баланс максимальной сложности, где ты тупо долбишься в жир; это никому не интересно. Ачивхантерам тоже не услужили - ачивки из разряда "убей боссов без получения урона" или "собери всю валюту для прокачки" без возможности грузить главы, отсутствия карты и адекватной навигации - просто бред. Концовка тоже подкачала. Тяп ляп - титры. История немного высосана из пальца, но в целом норм. Персонажи прям с иголочки. Боссфайты скучные.

Рад, что разработчики многострадальной We Happy Few смогли сделать что-то достойное, а также вписать сюда различную мифологию и поверия.

First of all: if you experience any issues with dull colors or stuttering, turn HDR off and make double sure that it was actually turned off. I had huge issues with HDR during my playthrough and only got to see the last few chapters in their full beauty.

The game is fantastic! I had South of Midnight on my wish list because I saw the potential We Happy Few had and really wanted to see what Compulsion Games had learnt and BOY had they learnt a thing or two! The thing that intrigued me the most was all the folklore that I hade never seen or heard of before, I could really feel that there were more to the creatures present and the stories told, that there is even more depth to them. I won't spoil anything, just know that the story and the lore will not disapoint you.

The story is great. It is told veeeery slowly, so at times I felt like I didn't follow what was happening. But I felt like the story tied everything together neatly by the end and all my waiting for it paid off in spades.

Then the combat. It is not Monster Hunter World or anything like that, the combat is a lot more basic. But that enables more people to play the game and the difficulty curve was very reasonable. I had some issues understanding how bosses works at the first boss, which caused some resets, but after that it felt very fair. The punishment for losing a battle is also very light, which makes a loss not sting too bad at all really.

The art style is wonderful! Which of course is very subjective, but in my opinion all things in this game are beutifully crafted and the same goes for all places I got to go.

The music was spot on too! The music is usually rather calm, but in tense moments of the story lyrics are added. So you are slowly fed small parts of the story and its associated lore while fighting or platforming. The pacing felt really good and I felt like I was entertained at all times. My mere 11 hours of play time felt like about 40 hours, but in a good way!

Finally the voice acting. I really REALLY like how this studio embraces accents and dialects, it really drives home how this is somewhere I have no experience with. It also makes all the people feel connected in a way where I am excluded, and I want in too! In other words, just from how characters speak to each other made me want to know more about them all. Great stuff!

Compulsion Games, if you guys happen to read this; if you have any lingering guild from We Happy Few, I think you all can lay it to rest. I feel like this game truly redeems any issues that game had an more. I will be waiting patiently for the next story you will tell me. And I really won't mind if that includes a re-visit to the Deep South.

Overall it's a great game. But the gameplay and story felt like a beginner's entry into gaming. Both of these aspects were incredibly simple and repetitive. If it wasn't for the story's dark themes and the curse words here and there I would say this is an S-tier children's game.
The art style is really nice, the level design and sound design are some of the best I've ever seen. Voice acting is also great.
I absolutely need to mention that the music is also great, really puts you inside the beautiful world they created. However the songs they play for the end of every level (like boss songs with lyrics) are truly the god-awful. Like really really embarrassingly bad. I was rushing the boss areas so that the song would end quicker.
Overall would recommend this game %100.

Si vous êtes fan de la Nouvelle Orléans et de jazz ce jeu est pour vous. Il fait voyager, il est touchant, un super réçis narratif, il vous tirera quelques larmes.
le gameplay est vraiment sympa avec des interactions avec l'environnement qui sont appréciable.
D'un coté on aimerait qu'il soit plus long, et d'un autre il est parfait tel qu'il est en terme d'heures de jeu.
Les dessins sont superbes, l'univers mystique sombre mais coloré colle très bien avec l'ambiance de la Louisiane, les musiques sont aussi vraiment top.
Pour moi le seul hic c'est le coté "couloir" de certains passages alors qu'on aurait envie de pouvoir explorer un peu plus, mais c'est vraiment un détail mineur à mon gout.

Il me semble qu'il laisse une fin relativement ouverte, serait-ce possible d'avoir une suite ? En tout cas je ne serait pas contre du tout, de nouvelles aventures pour Hazel la tisseuse.

Bref, je recommande a 100%, vous allez passer un week end pluvieux très agréable

At a popular restaurant chain there is an item called "The Tour of Italy". You get a selection of some of their popular entrees all on different corners of a large serving dish. It's shocking how much plate there is between them.

South of Midnight is a bunch of stunning story vignettes held together by a likable main character in search of her Mama.

Hazel is a weaver. What does that mean? It means we get to see stories. Ostensibly she can help fix them, but that is barely touched on and completely abandoned by the end. Being a weaver is our excuse to jump into Southern folklore.

The stories on display here are delightful. This game is full of eclectic characters, original music (some of it is even good!) and loads of southern vibes. It is compelling. You'll want some deep fried goodies and a bowl of gumbo after playing this one (unless you are on the pig level. Then you won't want anything).

Our method of exploration is held up by the three pillars of the game. Platforming. Combat. Cutscenes.

Platforming is cinematic and consistently breathtaking. Move around this world. Cutscenes (as mentioned) are also a real delight.

Combat is a chore. Pulled straight from the annals of modern game design you will encounter the same enemies again and again, you will perform the same moves, and you will clear corruption (sorry "Stigma") so you can proceed to the good stuff. You will need to do this ad nauseum. It isn't so bad it should dissuade you from playing, and it is quite flashy, but it is so banal and standard that one could argue whether they even should have included it.

Perhaps they should have just kept the boss fights, which are fun and unique. Less is more when your pool of combat mechanics is so narrow. It honestly doesn't really fit the narrative.

Things not fitting the narrative is the other glaring issue here. The only recurring themes in this game seem to be "Southern Folklore" and "People are more than they seem". None of the stories directly associate with the quest or growth of the heroine. Threads weaving them together are tenuous. It's just... fun times exploring stories in the south and Hazel is a better person for it.

And, we like Hazel. She coo'.

What is good about this game is so good that you can easily forgive its inconsistencies. It's a party in southern folklore! I had a blast playing through it and think the runtime is almost just right. Remove some of the fights. I wouldn't mind.

Первоочередно отмечу атмосферу с налётом афроамериканского фольклора: местами мрачную, местами наполненной яркими красками. Проработанный дизайн локаций - в самой игре приятно находиться и разглядывать окружение.

Сами образы встречающихся по пути персонажей довольно запоминающиеся. Разнообразные мифологические существа, их грамотное вплетение в историю и подача этих историй - всё оформлено очень выразительно и понятно. И главное - интересно узнавать, что же произошло в этом месте и с этими персонажами.

Не обошлось и без некоторых минусов. И это, в первую очередь, однообразность механик. На протяжении всей игры доступен один и тот же набор боевых приёмов, видов врагов и повторяющиеся действия из локации в локацию.
Когда я приступала к игре, понимала, на что иду. Поэтому лично мне было комфортно, что игра разбита на главы, и я неспешно проходила по парочке в день.

В целом авторы делали упор на окружение и анимацию, а не на проработку механик, поэтому это относительный минус для игры.

От игры не стоит ожидать многого, но как крепкий платформер с сочными локациями, приятным сюжетом и интересными персонажами она зайдёт тем, кому подобное нравится.
Если будет хорошая скидка - однозначно стоит брать.

Geniales Spielprinzip und vor allem hervorragende Sprecher, die ihre Sprechrollen perfekt auszufüllen wissen. Sowohl im englischen als auch im französischen Originalton. Wer Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden gespielt hat, wird hier genauso auf seine Kosten kommen.

Aktiviert unbedingt die Solostimmen in diesem Spiel in den Menüs.
Das, was da gesungen wird im laufenden Spiel an wichtigen Stellen, ist einfach nur herzzerreißend.

Der PC‑Port ist mehr als gelungen.

Spiele müssen nicht lang sein um Qualität damit auszudrücken.......sondern sie müssen zu Fesseln wissen.
Nicht alle paar Sekunden an jeder Ecke irgendwelche Grafikfeuerwerke abfeuern zu können und einen wie auf Schienen von einer Location zur nächsten zu bewegen.

Selbst Spielen, und das bewegt mich persönlich mittlerweile mehr als viele Triple AAA Spiele der letzten Jahre.

Danke und bitte weiter solche lieben Softwareperlen.

Platforming and traversal is pretty smooth. I wasn't enjoying the combat very much at first, but it gets better as you progress. The artstyle and story is the real hook that has me wanting to progress through the slog, which the slog feels thematically appropriate. It's tempting to lower the difficulty from advanced weaver as I'm sure it isn't as punishing on normal, but I appreciate that the difficulty gets me locked the ♥♥♥♥ in. I can't hate a game that literally got me to focus away some pesky hiccups and makes me feel triumphant for getting through the challenge, that's what I'm here for after all.

The art, the story, and the music make this worth it. The combat is not the greatest but it is a fairly minor component in an otherwise delightful adventure. I'm six hours in and I am HOOKED. I can see why this game won its fair share of awards. If you're on the fence about starting it, let this be a sign that you should. I had this game on my wish list since its release and just never got around to actually getting it. I'm tired of the games I've been playing lately and went through my list looking for something new, and MAN am I glad that I started playing this. Definitely so much fun. Great story, very unique animation, excellent fight sequences with a great pace. Totally customizable options for almost all settings. PLAY THIS GAME. You won't regret it!

Getting to this game late having to focus on schooling but now that i'm playing it i'm overwhelmed with how beautiful it is. There arent a lot of games out that cover American southern or Black American culture. This is incredibly niche in the larger scheme of stories to be told and I am over the moon that it exists. I hope there will be more stories to come like it.

I have wanted to play this game since it came out and just now have finally been able to play this.

This game was truly art. It's writing was some of the best I have ever experienced from a narrative. Any game that makes me openly weep will ALWAYS get the highest reviews from me. I wont go into specifics for spoilers, but beyond the fantastical mythic aspects it does the people it depicts in each story justice and shows an understanding of nuance I have never seen in another game. Characters are complicated, villains are sympathetic (for a time) and even the protagonist shows the kind of character growth I haven't even seen from games with multiple installments. The visuals were stunning and the subtle play on color schemes was not unnoticed.

Game play wise don't come into this looking for novel combat, that is not what its built for. You murder haints and you dodge. I did enjoy how each chapter brought in a new kind of mechanic as it kept momentum.

My only negative for this game is I wish it was longer, thats how much I enjoyed it. I hope the creators will provide more stories like the ones they shared here.

This game is absolutely wonderful if you are a fan of classic old school style single player games such as alice: madness returns and star wars jedi fallen order/survivor. You'll know what to expect here if you've ever played a game like this before but it's fun, engaging, and the story will keep you hooked to the end. The characters were really fun, and the length of the game was more or less what i'd imagined (10-12 hours).

Also note: I played on legion go s. It played amazingly on the handheld and is a great game for on the go.

Sublime, una obra de arte. Una lástima que no tenga el reconocimiento que entiendo que merece. Es una muy linda aventura, con unos gráficos encantadores, una jugabilidad muy fluida, una historia que sabe llevar el ritmo del juego, un desafío (simple) que cumple. El apartado sonoro es realmente muy bueno, me llamo mucho la atención la existencia de los diferentes temas para los enemigos principales de cada área.

Siento que tal vez el juego fue mal pre juzgado, porque realmente es una aventura con altísimos niveles de producción, hecha con mucho amor y muy entretenida. No considero que sea re jugable, tampoco siento que lo necesite.

En mis horas de juego, no encontré ningún fallo técnico, lo jugué muy tranquilo por encima de los 60 cuadros por segundo (las cinemáticas van a 30), en un I5 13600k, 32gb ram, RTX 4070 super TI, instalado en un SSD, al máximo (DLAA) en 1440p.

Muy recomendado.

This is without a doubt one of the best stories I've ever experienced. I saw myself in Hazel and in Lacy alike. Having been a child worried about their mother and a Father in a hopeless position in regards to helping my kids at one point this one hits home a few times, but there is also so much whimsy that you can't help but adore the world these folks built. Gameplay is solid, art style is charming, and the music adds so much to the story. Its worth the ticket for entry and then some. Please, play this.

Вся игра - это увлекательное, неторопливое приключение с чарующей атмосферой, самобытной мифологией и яркими персонажами, которых мы встречаем на своём пути.
Здесь нет ключевых выборов или влияния на историю, но этого и не требуется. Игроку предлагается увидеть мир глазами персонажа и пройти испытания вместе с ним, а не решать за него.
Здесь также нет большого разнообразия в сражениях, но их немного и они достаточно простые. Это не касается сражений с боссами, которые являются уникальными, динамичными и являются интересным завершением глав)
А вот что здесь есть - это восхитительное музыкальное сопровождение, необычные истории персонажей, таинственные мифические создания, атмосферные локации и тёплый, эмоциональный финал.

Сначала это едва уловимые мотивы - отдельные инструменты, фразы, шепот хора, - но чем больше игрок узнает о судьбе существа, тем полнее становится композиция, превращаясь в своеобразную балладу о его жизни. Тут можно услышать элементы блюза, госпела, фолка, кантри. Живые инструменты, вокальные партии и хоровые вставки создают ощущение, будто мир сам поет о своих ранах и памяти. Все локации линейны, с небольшими ответвлениями, в которых можно найти либо дополнительные очки для прокачки, либо записки и детали лора, расширяющие контекст происходящего.

В остальном, мир наполнен естественной живностью: где-то в стороне мелькнет кролик, в траве прошмыгнет лисица, между ветвей зависнут бабочки. Обитатели болот, лесов и рек постоянно напоминают, что природа здесь - не декорация, а главный хозяин этих мест. Немногочисленные следы человеческого присутствия - дома, постройки, мостки - уже начинают зарастать листвой, уходить под воду после наводнений, растворяться в ландшафте.

Все здесь сплетено в единое полотно, где каждая нить поддерживает другую. Мрачные истории персонажей не подаются как трагедии «на показ», а проживаются через окружение, через звук, через медленное движение по локациям. Музыка не сопровождает происходящее - она рассказывает его вместе с миром, подхватывает интонацию сцен, превращает встречи с существами в баллады, а исследование пространства - в тихое, почти медитативное путешествие. Визуальный стиль с его нарочитой «сшитостью» и stop-motion-пластикой усиливает это ощущение: ты будто находишься внутри рассказа, который создается прямо на глазах.
[h1]Геймплей и боевая система[/h1]
Основу геймплея составляет довольно легкий, но при этом приятный платформинг. Без излишних усложнений и наказаний за ошибки - зато с хорошим темпом и ощущением движения. Хейзел постепенно получает способности, которые открывают новые способы перемещения: можно карабкаться по вертикальным поверхностям, выполнять двойные прыжки, использовать потоки воздуха для левитации и коротких «полетов». Управление отзывчивое, а сами маршруты выстроены так, чтобы движение ощущалось естественным продолжением исследования, а не испытанием на точность.

Боевая система устроена столь же просто - многие назовут ее буквально однокнопочной. Есть базовые атаки, которые со временем дополняются набором способностей: толчок, притягивание врагов, кратковременный стан, возможность переманить противника на свою сторону. Эти умения добавляют ритм сражениям, но не превращают их в сложную тактическую задачу. Врагов в игре немного - около шести основных типов, от мелких до более массивных, - и в глобальном смысле они не требуют разных подходов. С боссами получилось интереснее. Каждый из них - отдельная постановка: с несколькими фазами, изменением окружения, уникальными атаками.

В итоге геймплей намеренно прост, чтобы не отвлекать от главного: атмосферы, рассказа и тех мрачных, но человечных историй, ради которых все это путешествие и затевается.

Это проект, который сознательно ставит на первое место историю, атмосферу и эмоциональный отклик, а не стремление удерживать игрока бесконечной активностью. Это игра, сделанная с душой и уважением к теме, к культуре, к самим историям, которые она рассказывает. Она поднимает вопросы памяти, утраты, принятия и человеческой боли так, как это редко делают другие игры.

В индустрии, где значительная часть крупных релизов сегодня сосредоточена на сервисных моделях, многопользовательских форматах и долгосрочном удержании аудитории, подобные авторские, сюжетно-ориентированные игры выходят все реже. The story, the music, the art, it all is so great! It is also very nice to play a game with a storyline that isn't usually showcased. It can be a bit heavy, but I think that is part of the charm of this game.

This is the most half-hearted "thumbs up" you'll see here as it isn't the worst thing ever and the game does have its moments.

South of Midnight is a beautiful game with amazing music and a great story. The combat and platforming puzzles are fun and can be challenging at times. Difficulty can be adjusted on the fly, which is nice if you get frustrated. The stop-motion/claymation aesthetic works and at points, especially when playing as Crouton in a burrow, is very charming. I did have some framerate drops (that weren't the purposefully dropped animation frames from the stop-motion styling) in some of the bigger maps, but they were rare. My only complaint is that the game doesn't save on quit, instead popping you back to the last pickup, fight victory, or other autosave event, though those at least happen very regularly.

My personal GOTY when it comes to story and music. I'd 100% recommend playing this game if you do not care about combat, because the general combat in this game is incredibly dull. Once I got the achievements related to combat, I skipped the rest. Despite this, the boss fights are fun and each has a killer theme. The platforming and exploration is also enjoyable.

2025 was an amazing year for games, and I wish this one hadn't gotten pushed to the side. Please do yourself a favor and play this game.

This game is going to have me speaking in an awful Southern accent for about a week.

Right off the bat, this FEELS like a Microsoft game, y'know? If you're into that type of thing, that's great, but they have a certain feel to them that means I have to adjust to the playstyle. I'm not sure what it is.

Hazel is very talkative in this, and I think I grew to like her more as the story went on and we got less clunky exposition from her. She's quite 'Marvel' for a chunk of the game, even with the ol' "Yeah, that's something I do now" and quips. Towards the end she becomes more of her own character and I enjoyed the end of her arc Her character design is also great.

The story isn't anything amazing, I feel like it's "Hazel Learns Empathy/Sonder" the game. This, like Hazels character, takes a while to get going, with a pretty clunky and heavy handed first half. I also found it odd that for the most part, after healing the trauma of the land, the characters who did those deeds aren't really spoken to again. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.[spoiler] I also found it odd that so many people knew about Two-Toed Tom. Hazel seems new to all this magic stuff, but regular folk are just like "Yeah, there's the alligator big enough that trees grow on its back, no biggie"
Hazel also doesn't really ask that many questions to her grandmother about the whole magic thing. If I were her, I'd be asking nothing but questions, Hazel just seems to take in stride a bit too adjusted.[/spoiler]

For the gameplay, the combat is solidly okay. Funnily enough, I think the first basic enemy is the worst. They seem to move quick and charge you from off-screen. The combat mainly shines when you're fighting a large enemy 1 on 1, however that doesn't mean the bosses are automatically better.[spoiler] Two-Toed Tom and the Rougarou seemed like bosses that had some cheap attacks, whereas Huggin' Molly was a fun multi-layered fight.
The platforming was really fun though, lots of interconnecting mechanics go to make this really fun when the game decides to give you a platform challenge. I noted to myself how this has better grapple/swing platforming than Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, just for the game to give me Crouton (my beloved) about 20mins later.[/spoiler]

Graphically, this game is obviously stunning, however with the stunning dense vegetation came a lot of me running into exploding mushrooms and thorns because I didn't see them, causing me to always swear. Whilst the game does look pretty, it seems to be mired by a lack of interactivity, a lack of life. Many times I tried to break some pots, or force push a chair or bottle. Nothing. Everything is glued down and you will like it that way. Remember in Metal Gear Solid 1 for the PS1 when you could shoot every bottle on a shelf and have it fly across the room?

This has gone on too long, but the soundtrack rocks with SO MANY standout moments that made me stop and listen. Not every song is a lyrical tour-de-force, but the composition of these tracks is stunning! Not being nominated for a VGA is actually criminal.

Играется на потоке, без душни. Сейчас подобное принято оформлять в метроидванию, но тут чисто линейно пробегается, от преодолеваемых расстояний ловишь чувство полета.

Чистокровный 3д-платформер, чем-то напоминает Шрек 2 и Мадагаскар. Это предупреждение: иногда может не регать попадание на платформу и тд, но не прям чтобы душило.

Боевка тут для разбавления гемплея, меня не бесила, в настройках бои вообще можно вообще вырубить лол.

Визуальный стиль и музыка (особенно та что с вокалом) - топ, сочно-уютно. Это правда хорошо реализовано.

Рекомендую играть без интерфейса вне боя.

I loved the story and the music. I had some issues while fighting, like sometimes you need to stand at an exact angle to heal and others being stuck in a camera angle not seeing what hit me. But overall, I loved this game!

This was an excellent game in my opinion. It tells a story with a preset character and had vibes which I felt were reminiscent of Witcher 3 at times (hunting monsters, etc.). The difficulty was well balanced, I didn't encounter any clear bugs, and the graphics worked for me. There are some beautiful stages with lots of flowers and trees. I appreciate the soundtrack with songs written, just for the game plot, in various Southern styles. I appreciate that there is a black female protagonist and that the storyline intertwines with some sensitive areas of early US history. The game felt quite rich and immersive to me, like good art which is different than usual. The game touches on some very emotionally painful aspects of humanity while simultaneously making the game interesting and fun to play.

Good old school PS1/PS2 combat (prince of Persia, god of war, etc.) but that is the only "bad" thing I can say about the game. The visuals were amazing and I loved the story telling aspect of the game. It did feel like to much and gave a nostalgia story telling feel I've missed.

A quintessential 7/10 game. The music/art design/character designs are my favorite parts. I turned the combat difficulty up to make it more engaging, but it was still quite boring by the end. The story itself is only interesting insofar as it delves into southern black folklore, which i wish it went harder in that direction.
