Well, first things first. I find it a bit saddening to see that this game is delisted... Meaning, that not many or any would come to discover it at this point. Even making this review somewhat obsolete...
But regardless, if we are to speak of hidden gems among our vast libraries, this game might be one of those especially shiny ones that you keep on overlooking no matter how many times it catches your gaze...

Now before i get too ahead of myself, I've got to admit - to my shame, that i was not overly familiar with this classic tale of ''Jason and the Argonauts'' prior to playing through the game. And from what i have learned afterwards is that it does differ from the original in some ways, so keep that in mind, i guess.
Personally such knowledge means little, i always take in the game for what it is and rate its overall value/impact on different points. So if they wanted to make their own spin on the tale, i can appreciate that as long as it is done in a compelling way - and to that point, in my opinion, the whole package is done quite marvelously.

The moment you're let loose on your quest into this mythological world of ancient Greece, the whole experience becomes entrancing and meditative...
Perhaps the fact that the game by large focuses more on dialogue rather than just continuous flashy combat, adds to that...
But without a doubt the main contributor is the excellent otherworldly music that just completely envelops you into it.
It's been a while since i enjoyed some great soundscapes such as this that manage to invoke so much through so little, in a manner of speaking...
Makes me feel as if i have nostalgia for it, even though i have none. As if it had latched on to and resonates with my similar past experiences... That is a rare thing indeed.

Will it leave such an impression on you, i cannot say...
But if at least what you see on the surface even remotely interests you and you have this game lying around in your library awaiting oblivion... Do yourself a favor and preserve its memory and play it.

Im using shader toggler to turn off the blur

and i use ghost and walk commands in every ue3 game simply by adding two lines to the input ini found in the mydocuments folder. Its basically noclip but you stay in your player. "Walk" drops you back down on solid ground. This allows me to go inside hottubs and pools and other places where im not able to go normally.

This game actually has jumping but its broken. I think they tried to fix it like 3 times with different jump commands that i found. Anyways I was able to get him to jump but he just jumps up and down in place forever until you load an old save

and the third person view in this game is...comically bad. Your character is in the middle of the screen, You can barely look up lol. How is that even possible in ue3?

And the combat is like scripted typical cheap unreal engine combat, with lock ons DELETED from the game so to artificially make it seem/look more like dynamic combat. Its bad. Its definately a bad game.

But i liked it. Nice adventure. Good graphics.

i take it this is an amateur development team, but they meant well and the game is very very good

An excellent game about a king saving his wife.
The story was good filled with teachings such as "what is wisdom" and the abilities you get throughout the game are impressive (for a 2008 game), the lightning from Athena for example.

Занятное приключение о походе аргонавотов за руном на пару вечеров. Есть интересные механики(особенно запомнился спор в финальной трети игры с "философом"), боевочка на троечку с плюсом: обильная прокачка, но есть имба способки - пушки начинают кидаться магией(ветка Гермеса), с мечом ультра кайф - сложные боссы отлетали с безумной скоростью прямиком в Тартар, берсерк тоже хорош в связке с булавой и сами ковырялки неплохо забалансили. От визуала плеваться не хочется, дизайн неплох, но есть повторяющиеся мобцы ближе к концу игры. Сюжетец норм, но читаемый. Ру озвучка просто мем. Видимо читали "по бумажке" и в этом есть определенный шарм.
Если кратко: история, которая проходится "неспешно", но очень скоро осознаешь, что игра пройдена.

Despite I find this game not so bad in general, I can't recommend it since it's just a pale phantom of a "God of war" series with ridiculously bad combat system.
I liked the "Witcher vibe" of the first part of the game, when I had to fight less, and more communicate, investigate and make some decisions. Unfortunately, the second part of the game is nothing but a series of combats.

So I come at this game from a nostalgia factor. I played it growing up with my dad. And we spent a whole day just having a blast with it. All in all it really is a fun game, but it absolutely has to be played with a controller to really experience it. I first played this game on 360 and while yes it does seem dated by todays standards I've also probably beat this game 8 or 9 times. The story has no different endings its just a blast from start to finish and trying out different skill trees since you wont be able to get em all in one playthrough. I still find stuff to this day playing it that I have missed in the past. Short cutscenes between Jason and Alceme. NOW while this isnt the story of Jason and the Argonauts verbatim there is some deviences to the tale IE Jason and Alceme instead of Jason and Medea. etc etc. Pan and Atalanta are my favorite duo to playthrough together and Achillies and Herc when ya just absolutely wanna pulverize....I mean herc just bear hugs, rips em in half, and moves ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mountain ("overgrown Pebbles") for you. Word to take note some of the boss battles can be a pain in the ass especially Nessus and Achillies (if your not accustomed to spear battle you will be here forever).

Was just looking back through all of my old games I completed and found this gem amongst the rubble. I remember going to my local GameStop back in 2008/2009 and handpicking this off the shelf and having such good memories that I ended up redownloading it on steam back in ~2020. What a shame they took it off the Steam Library.
This game is the personification of what you don't see anymore in modern era game development. Over the years, so many games have sacrificed story, emotion, and the feeling of a unique world with shoddy third-rate tactics such as battle passes, gacha, etc. Half of the time it feels like you have to have 17 Google tabs open to know where to find anything in modern games.
However, in Rise of the Argonauts you play an epic tale, fully immersed, and by the end of it, you feel as though you lived an entire alternate lifetime. Smooth, flowing combat based on the ancient tale of Jason's quest, beautiful zones with loyal companions that evoked emotion..you simply had to play it in it's prime to understand.

I've played this all the way through twice now (other time on Xbox). It might not be the prettiest game, but it is definitively one of the best stories in a game. I love the world, the story, and character interactions, that are akin to talking to shipmates in Mass Effect. This Argonauts game has a severely underrated story and characters. The characters should be more popular in pop culture, if only. The gameplay is nothing special. It is a weaker form of the modern Arkham games, but the characters, their stories, and the world building is amazing.

Oggi, consigliarne l'esperienza diretta, potrebbe essere un azzardo visto quanto è invecchiato il titolo e quanto, i difetti dell'epoca, a oggi sembrino addirittura più consistenti.
Eppure, se vi andasse di fare un'esperienza archeologica in una delle piccole perle dimenticate del passato recente, questa potrebbe fare al caso vostro.

Combat is fundamentally broken. The forward swings push enemies away from you so you'll miss 50% of attacks and slide across the entire fighting zone. Boss fights are puzzles and not fights. The game crashes regularly on modern operating systems. These 3 things specifically hold me back from recommending the game. So long as these are problems, the pros simply don't matter.

Separate to the fact that, currently, they just pulled the game from the store XD

I was searching my library to see if I had anything interesting to try out on the Steam Deck... What I found was a hidden gem... Released back in 08, Rise of the Argonauts is an action-adventure game set during the classic Greek tale of Jason searching for the Golden Fleece.

There are many different methods in customising builds for Jason through armour, weapons, followers, skills and talent trees. What makes this game unique for its time is how your conversation choices can add additional XP to a given talent tree. Such as picking more aggressive options will reward additional experience for the combat tree. There is also a very 300 inspired execution system which holds different animations depending on the weapon in use.

The plot and narrative for the game is quite strong with options of additional side quests for XP and equipment. Unfortunately as the game went on, I did feel that the main plot did drag out a little bit towards the end. The finale which was enjoyable did end abruptly which felt a little disappointing. The landscape and environments still hold up well by today's standards with each serving a different theme based on a different Greek God.

Overall Rise of the Argonauts is worth the play through if you are searching for a throwback to the PS3/360 eras combat and campaign lengths. The game runs excellent on Steam Deck other than one or two small graphical glitches in the environment. Compared to other modern games in the same field, Rise of the Argonauts holds up with a 7/10.

Rise of the Argonauts is an heavy story focued game with a small inspiration of God of War and simluar games with its fighting sections, the game gets better the more far you go into the game:

Pros:
+ great story if you like anything medival or simular stuff (you can talk to people and also have different dialoges choices for a little bit more freedom and can also talk about different topics, the good thing is this games story really makes you feel like a king all the characters have personality the main ones. there are also a few side quests for extra points that you can use for your god skill tree or you get a weapon/armor. Every city has its own storyline behind it)
+ combat is simple rpg but fun a few unsmooth moments here and there but it actually works fully soild (God of War style with a few finishers but nothing spectacular)
+ you can carry 3 weapons at the same time, do combos changing weapons on the go
+ graphics are great for its time
+ all 6 worlds look and feels a little unique and have its own unique style
+ you can choice different teammates to go with you which is neat (theres also moments where you also can fight alone if you want)
+ skill tree is good and its ui style specially the menu is great
+ some moments here and there feels cinematic with its music
+ voice acting is good
+ enemies are fun to fight, the boss fights at the other hand they are ok
+ the neat thing are the little dialogues between NPCs are cool, you learn a lot by listening to them you dont have to talk to them just walk past, theres a lot of life in this game not a lot of games do that in this style

Cons:
- looks and feels like a console port like bad shadows and not very clean looking (with the config ini. file you can change a lot of these things and make them better)
- story and its dialoges choices and talk to people is great but the problem is the character animation feels pretty stiff there are a few scenes that look arlight but mostly its just the typical stiff pose stuff
- random crashes during gameplay (i had found a way to go away the crash completly with a dinput8.dll file put into the games order)
- the beginning is a little weak (i mean the intro stuff was good) but after that you go outside of the palace to explore lolcus kingdom and walk around in empty places it wasnt really that great and 2nd world Myceane was a lot of walking back and forth, dont get me wrong the story was good there but gameplay wise it was meh. After the 2nd world the game is really enjoyable)
- a lot of dialoges have bad sound quality (maybe 30% of them)

Game feels a little unique for sure, The beginning is more peaceful and less hack and slash gameplay and more story talk compared to during the end when its all more very serious action packed even with its story. If you expect to find a lot of fighting hack and slash gameplay this game wouldnt be really for you! If you can enjoy a rich story game (30% gameplay and 70% of talking/story stuff) then its worth a look!

Fazit:
Rise of the Argonauts hat mich ein bisschen überrascht. Ich dachte es wäre ein stumpfer Hack'n'Slay-Titel der zur Kategorie Trash gehört. Es handelt sich hierbei jedoch um ein Action-RPG mit dem Setting altes Griechenland.
Man merkt sofort das es sich um einen Konsolenport handeln muss, da die Steuerung so wirkte. Wenn man sich aber einmal hineingefitzt hat, kann man das Spiel gemütlich spielen. Die Kämpfe machen sogar Spaß. Leider sind diese meiner Meinung nach zu rar. Es gab etwas Backtracking und da wäre es schön gewesen, wenn Gegner respawnen. Somit wirkten die meisten Gebiete nach dem zweiten Mal durchlaufen leer.
Es gab dafür sehr viel Story... Davon jedoch zu viel... Die teilweise auch sehr lang gezogen und öde wirkte. Wahrscheinlich wäre die Handlung besser gewesen, wenn die Charaktere nicht so steif gewirkt hätten. Tatsächlich soll es an der deutschen Synchronisation liegen, welche schlecht ist. Die englische Variante wollte ich nicht austesten.
Schön waren die unterschiedlichen Gebiete gestaltet, welche man besuchen konnte. Leider bleib es bei einem Besuch und wieder zurück zum weiteren Erkunden ging es nicht mehr.
Was mir sehr gut gefallen hat, war das Skillsystem. Die Errungenschaften einem Gott zu widmen und dafür Fähigkeiten zu bekommen, fand ich wirklich originell.
Das Spiel war nicht so schlecht, wie ich es zuerst dachte. Es hat so seine Macken aber ist für einen oder zwei Spielabende Empfehlenswert!!!!

Das wird vielen nicht zusagen. Genauso wie die sehr kurze Story.

Juego bastante machado por la crítica, pero que yo disfruté en su día y volví a jugar años después, siendo agradable de jugar, contándonos una historia de Jasón y los Argonautas un tanto modificada, pero con unos personajes interesantes.
Obviamente es un juego que ha quedado obsoleto tanto en sus gráficos como en mecánicas, pero tiene una combinación de exploración, combate y aventura, con diálogos que nos activan nuevas opciones. Esta mezcla de géneros hace que no sea monótono y poder elegir varios acompañantes en cada misión, también aporta algo de variedad. Por contra, los enemigos son muy escasos y repetitivos.
No es un juego que sobresalga en ningún aspecto (si acaso destaca en la historia), pero es aceptable o notable en todos ellos

Combat is either too easy or too hard, there isn't any satisfaction in it either way. With the exception of a few moments when you first start pulling off finishing moves, which is OK but quickly becomes routine.
Your companions are only really there to add to the story, which is alright, having them in combat is pointless as they're either not needed or not there.
It does seem mysterious and compelling at first, however, I found this quickly ran thin as the combat was so repetitive for the most part. I found the boss fights horrendously tedious, you just have to reload until you discover all the mechanics and then practice until you win that fight.
I can't remember how much I paid for this exactly, but I know it was no more than a couple of quid, don't ever buy this at full price, it isn't worth it.

Rise of the Argonauts (2008)

Anybody who is familiar with Greek mythology and stories should immediately recognise the name of this game as Jason and the Argonauts so that should give you an idea of what to expect. Indeed you do play as Jason who sets out to find the golden Fleece, a very cool setting for a game I feel.

The gameplay is pretty straight forward, you can attack enemies with a variety of weapons such as your spear, sword, mace and a shield for defence. You can collect different armours as you progress. I enjoyed the perk system a lot, you choose one of four gods to worship and they each give you different play style to work with. You then complete challenges to gain points to unlock passives and abilities. Most of these perks feel somewhat underwhelming unfortunately as you still just tend to basically attack enemies to death which is the main gameplay loop.

The story was enjoyable and you get to make dialog choices during certain parts which is very nice to see, it gives you choices and make you as the player have some impact in the game. Boss fights were fun, just learn the attack pattern and wait for an opening. It's a great game to play. While the combat is the same from start to finish, the story and locations make up for it. It's an old game by today's standards, but if you love Greek Mythology this is a great game to add to your collection.

I dont understand the good reviews. Graphics and animations are perfectly fine for the time. Gameplay is ok-ish (bit clunky) but what kills me is the dialoge. The german synch is probably the worst I ever heard. The writing is pretty bad as well:

[spoiler]- You are the king and guardian and right after you tell some curious women about the guardians holy oaths you decide to break it seconds later. It's also barely ever mentioned.
- The king obviously knew not to trust his uncle but he left him in charge of his home anyway.
- The master of arms retires, you chose a successor and sitting at home with his family the old master discusses becoming a farmer with you. After that you meet some new kid who wants to join the guard who then is still supposed to report to the old master for some reason.

Thats just a few things I caught in the first 3 hours. Conversations also feel very artificial and clunky. Exposition follows more exposition. Nobody talks like that, especially not to their king.

One positive thing I need to mention is the progression system. You complete deeds like "killed 25 dudes" and then you bestow those deeds to one of the gods to rank up your devotion to them ion order to recieve skillpoints to spend on that gods skilltree. Thats a nice idea.

I was disappointed when I couldn't get this game to work on Windows 10, but when I downgraded to Windows 11, I was pleasantly surprised that among all the toils and boils, trials and tribulations of having Windows 11, I was able to get Rise of the Argonauts to work. The game crashed on me a few times but with near-instant load times and common checkpoints it wasn't bad. I only wish there were checkpoints on the ship before missions. But besides having to replay a boss and a long ship scene it wasn't that bad.

I normally give thumbs down if a game doesn't allow a custom control, but this game is designed specifically for a game controller so no thumbs down here. I prefer keyboard and mouse but it didn't feel clunky to use a controller in this game.

The game reminded me of the Cursed Crusade, that I played over a decade ago, and Jade Empire. It's got that Bioware vibe to it that I think a lot of players will take nostalgia from. It's pretty short, I took my time and did maybe half the side quests-- all that I could find without a guide.

Difficulty wise, I played on medium and didn't die at all until the last boss. That was mostly because I didn't know how to throw my spear (special + dodge). They tell you in the tutorial but honestly, I didn't really pay attention. I used light attack and block or roll throughout my game play. God power wise, I maxed out Apollo for healing. I then cherry picked Hermes for divine favor and rolling, Athena I picked up a few sword things, and Ares for a couple of damage bonuses. There's no health bar, which is an odd choice but the music changes and you can tell when you're low. The god powers are nice, but honestly, the only god power I really used was healing beacon and even then it was rare. You don't have to use god powers.

Story wise, I liked it. I feel like an exec must have told them that they needed to include Perseus, Medusa, and Achilles, which feel out of place. But, that said, I really liked those storylnes. I felt Medusa was the coolest Medusa I had ever faced out of the many Gorgons out there on Steam to fight in games. Achilles, though out of place, was a good character. But, this game suffers from a lot of the games from the time period (and even today, looking at you Mass Effect) you get all these great characters but they hang out on the ship. You have 5 companions and had the game been longer, I think it wouldn't have bothered me much, but I feel like I barely got to know them. Hercules also needed a club and a lion's pelt, just saying. Medea, I can't say my complaint without a spoiler, but I feel that she needed more to her. The actual story of Jason and the Argonauts she is extremely important and a tragic character.

Overall, fun game. While I'd put it below Jade Empire or KOTOR, the fact that I can put it among those giants says a lot about the game itself. Check it out if you have the horrible OS Windows 11, if you're still on 10, holding out for hope, there are guides to get it working but I never went through that.

Kinda mad at myself for not buying a copy of this on the 360 all those times I had a chance to. Though I am not familiar with the story before playing this im quite happy with how it it began and the ending I would say is ok. The beginning pacing could use some work but loved all the interactions with so many people dealing in matters of importance pertaining to Jason's position as being chosen of the Gods, as a leader, and as a friend.

The unique leveling system giving points when actions are done or stories are finished was actually really cool and would love to see something like this in other games as well. Combat at first is kind of floaty and imprecise but keep at it for a bit and you will get the hang of how it works and why your given multiple weapons right out the gate. Everything has its strengths.

Love the Greek setting and mythology incorporated in the game and even the Blacktongue are honestly a pretty vile group of people that fit really well. Liked 2 of the companions alot, 1 of them was meh, and the archer was useless in every scenario. All in all I recommend the game.

I really like the game when it works. Need more Greek Mythology games and this has plenty. You would think it would be upgraded and work better than its console original sadly that is not a selling point, it often hangs and kicks me out completely. Add to that the broken save state and you will be playing the same content over and over. For the life of me I am not sure how they can port a game from xbox 360 and break it more than it was on the console version, but here you go.

Als Kind habe ich leidenschaftlich gerne die "Sagen des klassischen Altertums" gelesen und dieses Spiel fängt die Stimmung sehr schön ein. Zwar suchen wir hier anscheinend nicht das goldene Vlies (vielleicht kommt das noch), sondern versuchen, unsere ermordete Geliebte zurückzuholen. Der Grafik merkt man das Jahr 2008 teils deutlich an, nach kurzer Zeit fällt es einem aber kaum noch auf. Die Atmosphäre des mythologischen Griechenlands wird toll auf den Bildschirm gezaubert. Die Stimmung erhält leider durch die Sprecher einen kleinen Dämpfer. Es ist zwar lobenswert, überhaupt eine deutsche Sprachausgabe zu haben, allerdings wirken die Texte oft sehr unemotional abgelesen. Aber auch damit können wir relativ gut leben, da uns die Geschichte sofort abholt und hineinzieht in das Geschehen. Die Steuerung per Gamepad funktioniert einwandfrei und die unterschiedlichen Waffen (Schwert, Keule, Speer) bringen Abwechslung in die Kämpfe. Für mich ist dieses Spiel eine schöne Überraschung und hat mir Lust aufs Weiterspielen gemacht.

This game was made with too little money, by too few developers, and with not enough time.
It was released unfinished, therefore it is buggy and you can see where content was cut here and there, half of the characters that were meant to be party members are stuck as dialogue-only npc's on the ship; beautifully crafted memorials to what might have been. There is easily half of the game here at the bottom line.

That said; this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fascinating.

Clearly inspired by the mid 00's media phase set alight by titles like "300" and 'God of War', it has a lot of visual, tonal, and thematic hallmarks that will likely seem unusual to young players (of which there will be none), but are super nostalgia-inducing for greybeards. But beyond the reductive surface response you may have is a really neat concept. We clearly had a team play Mass Effect the year before and at some point one among them said "What if the Normandy was the Argo?". What we ended up with is a game with an art style clearly inspired by the work of Frank Miller, Cary Nord, and Thomas Yeates, that plays a lot like God of War (in combat style and upgrade mechanics), and it has interchangeable party members (like Mass Effect) to back you up and change the flavor of combat as the story progresses (with sadly not enough game to make use of them all really). But where this game really shines is the writing,
the bombastic, lush, and gameplay-relevant writing...

There are snippets of dialogue, aphorisms, insults, and hard questions that I am convinced we'd all still be quoting these 16 years later (at the time of writing) had the game been able to be fully realized. There is a boss fight in this game that starts with the first phase of the fight being a literal classical debate on ethics in a direct reference to the Lyceum where the boss and player are surrounded by philosophers offering their feedback. It was absolutely unlike anything I had seen outside of maybe the most niche JRPG, and even that comparison seems like a stretch. There was a palpable abundance of care afforded to the how, when, and why of all the talking in a game where words are a very important game mechanic, in a genre where oftentimes dialogue is more weighted toward self-indulgence on the part of the author(s). In the end even that typical design pitfall was avoided by making the chattiness of the game have a constant and recurring value as the most basic dialogue decision essentially gives you skill points for your character build. Yes, you read that right.

As a result of all of this the process of building your character (Jason) feels like a process pretty distinct (if not totally unique) to this game, with every choice in action, dialogue, method of dispatching a boss all being devoted to different gods that unlock different buffs and abilities for players. Like I said, fascinating, and honestly a missed opportunity for ... well the RPG/ARPG world as a whole as far as enduring influence might have gone. Again this game came out in a time when 'moral choice systems' completely lacked nuance, and were famously idiotic and binary, locking the player out of a combat benefit to see a sub-plot outcome; this game completely fixed that industry slump and went totally unnoticed. The end result is that even when in dialogue you are building your character. Even when in scripted events or interactive cutscenes you are STILL BUILDING YOUR CHARACTER. Let me rephrase that; this is an action roleplaying game that does something that we only see in the best CRPG's or is usually relegated exclusively to pen and paper. That's kind of huge, especially in 2008, especially in this particular way that is on theme and in universe with this fresh and original gods system.

The combat is engaging and visually fun, it features lots of gore and dismemberment and slow motion kills (2008), the powerups feel suitably bad ass, the move set while kind of dated in terms of feel still feels engaging and dynamic. The characters are charming, with a surprising level of depth and attention to detail for a title this ill-fated and rushed. Listening to Hercules accidentally invent Pokemon with Pan as they debate building teams of monsters to duel one another, or Achilles trying to get Atalanta's attention and blowing it, talking to Daedalus about his son's death ... it all felt like it really had wheels, it doesn't waste your time. The plot and story, while better suited to Orpheus than Jason, was still solid and well executed. This particular take on the adventure explored some really exciting and new territory with a bit of honestly immersive world building that this dev team brought to the table.

It's a pretty damn good game. Shame it had to go out the way it did.
Who knows, maybe Nightdive will do a remake ?

Old and rusty but still quite good.
Some people reference to it as "mass effect" in ancient Greek myth setting, and it really has a lot of similarities to the first game - several (4) npc's to recruit, to make a team of 3 (Jason +2), the main mission requires to visit several cities to find some gods descendants, the dialogs with 4 gods-related options that match paragon-hero thing.
The main difference is the gods powers (which are plenty, 4 for each god, 16 total) and the leveling itself. Each god-related dialogue line, each action (heroic accomplishment or mission completion) could be devoted to a god, which fills the gauge and opens the god powers. Some are passives for Jason in total (work with any weapon in any situation), some work only with god related weapon (athena - spear, Ares - mace, etc) and some are active ones.
Need to mention that most myths were changed/ modified so knowing actual myths will not help, but you will find some familiar names or places.
My favourite part of the game was the rhetoric boss battle vs a corrupted philosopher, which plays as it sounds - awesome,
But the game has also multiple drawbacks, like -
- empty cities and locations, the game is very straightforward oriented and some locations are just too big and empty. There are little to no side quests, no interactions with regular npcs, you have the main quest and you focused on it
- kinda bad enemies variety
- little to no training. Some mechanics are mentioned only once - if you were inattentive, or forgot about them - you most likely will not get another clue about its usage (tho the game itself is not hard at all so you can finish it without dive deep in combat mechanics)
- the game is too easy and even hardest difficulty provides almost no challenge (at least if you get good talents; meaning - choosing general passives over god powers, because powers are rarely used in early and mid game)
- you cant see requirements for deeds of a constellation unless you already finished at least one deed of that constellation - means sometimes you can (and will) miss some deeds/achievements = lose experience and levels without knowing about it or too late in the game
- while the game is short, it has a limited saves count (8 if im not mistaked) and I dont like this limitation.

This game is not a hidden gem or solid good, but i like it nonetheless. If you ever played some 3rd person RPGs, maybe you would like it too

A good game in the vein of KOTOR and Mass Effect. While not as "big-budget" as Mass Effect, I found that Jason and the Argonauts had superior dialogue and writing.

While the conversation decisions did not change the world around you; they give you, usually, four different replies that were quite unique and satisfying.

It is full of Greek mythology, while being slightly changed for creative purposes to fit the game's story. I feel those who have at least a basic understanding of Greek mythology will gain more from the story as the names will be familiar.

The combat is basic but serviceable; near the end it begins to get tedious, although you are so strong it's rather enjoyable wrecking all the villains fool enough to think they can stop you.

Your companions are rather bland, but I found that the game really wanted you to focus on Jason who is a stand-out character. He is akin to Superman/Clark Kent in that he is an honest and caring person who will not stray from the path of good (although you can be rather brutal to anyone who stands in your way).

The voice acting is generally positive. A few wooden voice lines from NPCs, but the main characters and quest givers are on par with Mass Effect.

I liked Jason, he was a character I was cheering for throughout the entire game, he had good morals and a brave heart. There is no sex/nudity or drinking in this game, although there are some suggestive moments, skimpy clothes and people do get killed. A PG-13 type game.

Lastly, there are many wise words and lessons spoken throughout the game that I will consider in everyday life from now on. I applaud the writers.

My first piece of advice save scum like your life depends upon it, it has been known to crash multiple times throughout my time of playing.

But, as someone who loves Greek mythology I love the dialogue choices in the god aligned choices, the combat, and the music by the gods the music when in battle or in a scene.

I love this game and would pay ten dollars again, I don't regret getting this game it is worth it. If you love Greek mythology.

War, Wisdom, Wit, and Empathy. Each of the four Olympian gods you work with, I love their portrayal in this game.

Just know this story is quite lore inaccurate going in, also Hecate is not as bad as she is depicted in this game. But, this game is still fun and I love it.

Good old hack and slash action with an ancient Greek flair. Finally came back to this after putting it on hiatus over 10 years, it was such a treat to play it on the Deck.

I find the title misleading as this isn't really the myth of Jason. If you came to this expecting a retelling of The Argonautica that plays like Mass Effect combined with Greek God of War then you have come to the wrong place. While I don't know that much about the Myth of Jason from what I do know of it this game really only uses it as a skeletal structure. This is not only really fast on loose with the story of Jason but also all of Greek mythology. Still it does get some things right for example this one of the only Greek Mythology games that I know of that actually depicts the gods having golden ichor instead of blood.

From the gameplay sides of things it tries to be both Greek God of War and Mass Effect but falls short on both regards. The combat system isn't as mechanically deep as GoW and honestly feels more like a chore than it is challenging not that you'll really have that much time to delve into the combat system as this game is definitely more skewed towards the walking and talking aspect. Also don't expect the Mass Effect inspired portion to make up for it as it's definitely Mass Effect lite. You really don't make any significant choices or change throughout your journey. Still it doesn't overstay it's welcome like a lot of modern RPGs, which are bloated to no end. So I would say it'll be worth playing at least once and for $10 you pretty much get what you're paying for just don't expect to be blown away buy it.

TL:DR if you're looking for an accurate retelling of the Jason Myth this isn't it but for what it actually is and the price point you can't really go wrong.

Klar das Spiel ist von 2008 und hat so seine Grafik aber dafür hat man hier Griechische Geschichte pur zu erleben, Jason, Hercules u.v.m. einfach schön zu spielen auch die Steuerung wie der Sound sind heut noch sehr gut vorhanden ( kann nen Controller hier nur empfehlen ). An sich kann ich hier nur sagen für 4.99€ hab ich da echt keine Fehl kauf gemacht und kann es daher nur wärmstens Empfehlen!

I guess if you like Greek mythology you would enjoy game. I would definitely enjoy this game if i played like 5-10 years ago, but in 2023(24) its kinda meh.

The Rise Of The Argonauts is what happens when a developer wants to make a Mass Effect but instead of Sci-Fi they use Greek Mythology and also have a shoestring budget to make that even remotely come to fruition.

This game can be described as a Adventure/Action game with emphasis on "Adventure" because you'll be doing a lot of backtracking and talking and making decisions using a radial dialog ring which is the only thing this game can do as good as Mass Effect.

There's a surprisingly deep RPG upgrade system at work as well but since the combat in this game consists of mashing a couple buttons until your foe is dead, it seems like an utter waste. Don't make the mistake of expecting anything similar to God Of War's smooth, deep combat. It truly seems like everything other than the dialogue and story in this game have been created as an afterthought.

Graphics wise, the game uses old Unreal Engine 3 and even though I'm the kind of person who finds heaps of charm in older games and how they are presented, there was nothing here for me to commend. Rise Of The Argonauts is an ugly looking game with ugly animations and truly the only thing that barely resembles any creativity is the character design (barely).

The story and characters though, are pretty alright even though they've definitely taken too much liberty with telling a tale based on a Greek mythology storyline. Voice acting can be very jarring as well but I had a good time with some of the more interesting lines some of the characters spewed every once in a while, especially those of Pan, your Satyre companion.

All in all, I'd recommend avoiding this one as it barely has any charm holding the tiring experience together. However, maybe if you're super interested in this completely new take on Jason and the Argonauts' story and have exhausted every other option, then maybe, just maybe, you'll find an amusing story told here beneath the heaps and heaps of gameplay junk.

Ancient mythical Greek Mass Effect!
I've wanted to play this game for years but never had the opportunity until now.
Is it a bit rough? Yes, in terms of some low rez graphics, but otherwise it's deep, it's charming, it's fully voiced, it's well written, and it's fun.
I like the steampunk aesthetic with stylized visuals and instantly recognizable characters. There's a lot of exploring you can do as long as you don't mind walking with NPCs you can talk to and plinths with historical and mythological records for Jason to read aloud.
This really does come across as Mass Effect on a budget which isn't horrible. You eventually get a ship and a motley crew you can chat to, different classes of weapons and armor to find you store in your state room, places to travel with open world style quests to go on but also a linear story to follow. There's some unique aspects to this game too: skills to level up by dedicating your deeds to different deities. Melee focus with crowd combat and special attacks.
One of the rather unique aspects of this game is that that Jason is a decent guy. You can MAKE him ruthless to pledge yourself to Ares or pragmatic if you choose Athena to follow with conversation choices instead, but most of the time he's polite, he tries to find civil solutions, and he tries to see the good in people. The choices you make on his behalf defines his philosophy but he's not crude or mean or petty: he's just an upstanding fella. If you want to truly play a heroic person this is one of the best choices. Jason is interesting, but the writers didn't feel he needed to be overtly morally ambiguous to be so.
And this extends to the game in general. Even the 'bad guys' have their reasoning and history. Times can be you can talk your way out of a situation that could be much worse, or take the cold and easy way but for the sake of as little bloodshed as can be spared.
I'm the kind of guy who doesn't mind walking around an interesting world, talking to people (who are thankfully all well voiced and written) and trying to find all the little details and side quests and such. Without even these combat is visceral, responsive, and flashy enough to hold attention I think.
Is it quite up to Mass Effect par? That's a high bar to reach, but this is the little game that could. It's got heart, it's got soul, and I had a great time playing it.

Ignore my play time. i discovered this hidden gem upon release. Unfortunately, I had zero idea this was on PC lol. Regardless, my brother, who usually has to be metaphorically beaten to get him to play something that deviates from his normal games, also got this on or near the original release date. I texted him about this game and he was basically like "yeah dude! I have it!" [insert praise we gave]. The point is that is rare between he and I outside of big name mainstream games. Obviously, we will pick up, I dunno, God of War for example. But to both pick up this sleeper game and love it was surprising.

So that means YOU should be playing this, too, see? The graphics don't hold up. I won't even lie. The animations are stiff. The voice acting is a little...rough...but does sound better in other languages if you don't mind subtitles. It starts off slow, despite a cinematic introduction that you would think was about to drop you in to some wild action. And, wait, I forgot where I was going with this.

Yikes, but fear not! This is a great game, I swear. The gore is awesome, and unlike many games' slo-mo combat, this game's doesn't get old, but is repetitive. I think the latter speaks volumes. I often get sick of repetitive cut-scene style combat endings. I hate when a dev can't be arsed to add in more than a couple animation sequences. This game suffers from its era; not from developer failure. I do have a nostalgic advantage over someone picking this up today, because when it was released it was excellent and I remember how I felt playing it. Just remember that it's a victim of its time.

The action picks up, and of course, so does the story; both in action and in story. I don't have a lot of things to complain about in a very low budget game that got practically zero advertising, had a quiet af release, and suffers from its share of issues from its era and said low budget, but they did so much with this.

If you can tolerate Elder Scrolls and Fallout games (because they are ugly af outside of Skyrim), especially back in the day releases of those franchises, this should be no problem.

The story, despite the acting, is really good. I mean, it isn't some mind blowing epic or any thing, but compared to some of the crap today, this game is a work of art.

Rise of the Argonauts stand auf der Kippe zwischen Daumen hoch und runter. Der erste Eindruck ist schlecht. Das Spiel beginnt abrupt und die schlechten Animationen stoßen sauer auf. Das Kämpfen ist ein dumpfes Draufgehaue. Aber nachdem man seine Reise beginnt wird es besser. Die Geschichten der drei Inseln, die man besucht sind überraschend gut geschrieben und abwechslungsreich. Zu erwähnen ist, dass die griechische Mythologie hier lose als Vorlage dient und sich viele Freiheiten genommen werden. Man schaltet neue Fähigkeiten frei, durch ein unkonvetionelles Level-Up-System. Man bekommt keine Erfahrungspunkte, sondern weiht seine Heldentaten einer von 4 Gottheiten. Coole Idee. Das Kampfsystem bleibt simpel, trotz neuer Fähigkeiten. Besonders deutlich werden die Mängel des Kampfsystems bei Bosskämpfen. Man merkt die Parallelen zu Mass Effect sehr und leider besteht ein qualitativer Unterschied zwischen beiden Spielen. Dennoch spürt man ebenso, dass die Entwickler sich Mühe gegeben haben. Das Spiel ist klar strukturiert. Nichts wird unnötig in die Länge gezogen. Man redet wie in ME viel und die meisten Dialoge mit Nebencharakteren sind interessant und beleben die Spielwelt. Leider gibt es auf deutsch Probleme mit der Audio. Einige Zeilen hören sich dumpf und leise an, während andere klar und deutlich sind. Das macht die Arbeit der guten deutschen Sprecher zu nichte. Die Perfomance ist Bombe. Es lief die ganze Zeit mit flüssigen 60fps ohne ein einziges Mal zu ruckeln. Die Grafik ist eher zweckmäßig, aber jeder Ort ist gut gestaltet.

Rise of the Argonauts kann trotz seiner klaren, qualitativen Schwächen unterhalten. Das schafft es durch Bündelung. Das Kampfsystem ist simpel, aber wird nicht langweilig, weil das Spiel nicht in die Länge gezogen ist und das Kämpfen durch Dialoge unterbrochen wird. Der Geschichte wird genug Raum gegeben, um sich zu entfalten ohne unnötig weitergesponnen zu werden. In diesem Fall ist weniger, mehr. Hätte Rise of the Argonauts eine Open-World mit dutzenden zu wiederholenden Aufgaben, würden die Schwächen mehr ins Gewicht fallen. So bietet RotA ein gebündeltes Unterhaltungsprodukt.

Exceptionally well-made RPG game that takes a lot of inspiration and elements from Mass Effect done in a Greek setting. Choices matter as each dialogue can help improve Jason's boons with the gods. This is one of those games that do not need a prequel or sequel. It's excellent as it is. My few complaints would be that I wish there were more interactions with the world rather than speaking with people or fighting mobs. Also, a health bar would be a nice feature. It's not that major of a complaint. It's my only minor one.
