This game has a notorious memory leak issue that got introduced since the latest patch and never got fixed !

I had to download the entire game older version by opening the steam console and enter a specific command. This is mainly for higher specs users as playing on a lower resolution and settings dosen’t seem to affect as much.

I have no clue why this games run as bad as it does, but it simply do.

Game will randomly run at 140 fps max settings, and drop to 20-30 fps when turning your camera. Enemies fire too many projectiles? WOOO there goes your frames. Too many things move when you focus your camera? RIP, back to double digits frame!

It's a shame because the game is conceptually fun, fast paced and exciting. But the performance on my PC is incredibly weird. I can play most modern games without any issues - and even if the game ran at a lower FPS CONSITENTLY, it wouldn't be a problem, but this game requires fast movement and accuracy with invulnerability frame dodge. This means that any FPS drop during combat might kill you just as much if not more than most enemies in the game.

There hasn't been any word or fixes from the devs in years since the game released? I'm not the only one reporting these FPS issues... you can simply google it or check steam forums. WTH is going on?

Otherwise, the protagonist suffers from Sony Games Syndrome - They have to talk and comment about EVERYTHING. It feels like you're playing the game on the vision-impaired mode because there is not a SINGLE visual cues that doesn't have some audio comment from the protagonist. I'VE FOUND THIS STRANGE TOOL, SEEMS TO BE A XENO-BLADE TYPE WEAPON. I HAVE FOUND A PARASITE, IT BOTH WEAKENS AND STRENGTHENS MY SUIT. I HAVE FOUND A NEW WEAPON, IT SEEMS TO SPREAD DAMAGE EVENLY. I HAVE FOUND A NEW TOOL, THIS TOOL SEEMS TO SUIT MY SUIT PERFECTLY.

Played it for the updated co op mode, only had one game breaking bug witch is kinda annoying cause you can only do one co op run per run meaning if they leave they cant join back so you have to restart the run. very fun to play.

I will admit the beginning difficulty curve did take me a while to get past, since I just finished another Rogue like like Hades 2 just before this. It was jarring to see a punishing and very long Run/ loop where every mistake hurts and you dont really take anything back to base to make your next run better. I would suggest anyone to loop up some guides to help you understand which rooms have which loot and how to prioritize weapons/ healing and upgrades. Just push through till the first few traversal mechanics open up and it really picks up after that.

The Combat is hard but the RNG has never felt unfair that you are unable to complete the run or need to restart. The only issue is that a full 3 Biome Run takes like 3-4 hours for me if you are going into every room to get all the loot and upgrades. This naturally makes it a bit of a slog everytime you die, making you want to take a break before starting again (Luckily you can save and continue mid-run if required).

Story wise I am almost at the end, and the suspense is killing me! I would highly recommend it if you are in for a challenge.

Personally, a game I don't know why I didn't played earlier. At first it seems like just another roguelike for me, but after seeing how deep it goes, cryptic, mysterious, those moments of realization about what's really going on, the music, the intensity of the fights, etc... I just regret not playing it earlier.

Absolutely gorgeous.
- The gameplay is fast, intense and punishing if you don't keep moving.
- Roguelike gameplay is great, of course you lost almost everything when dying, but the things you keep progress on are good enough to keep going. Plus, the rng can also play a very important role, for example, all the rooms change in every run.
- Music literally plays a very important part of the game and it's story, just like the creatures you fight.
- Visually looks great, a bit exigent about requirements tho for a smooth experience.
- Story isn't clear at all, which can be good or bad. In this case and for me, those moments of realization about the symbolism, pararelism, how subtle it is, little and almost insignificant details that you see on early game but you realize later how much heavy they are... I loved those so much.

For any fan of roguelike genre and stories with more depth than it looks like at first, this is a must.

精英怪逆天伤害，两下就死，比boss都厉害。各种强力诅咒然后加一丢丢血上限，制作组真的玩过自己做的游戏吗，肉鸽是一点没做出来，各种陷阱，负收益远远大于正收益。打怪掉的钱不及时捡会消失，几秒不捡就没了，问题就在这里，到处堆怪，弹幕很多，有的时候根本没时间去捡钱，然后钱就没了导致怪白打，一点收益都没有。难度曲线非常逆天，不建议买。

Adding this review late cause I saw loads of negative reviews on the performance. I didn't have any bugs or performance issues.
On the game itself, it's a rogue lite bullethell I guess they call it. The first of the genre I play and I enjoyed it. The biomes while different, still kind of look a like. Could use more different colors. But isn't exactly the theme of the story, so whatever. And the story is confusing all the way through. Had to watch an explainer after and even those differ from each other. So yeah. Enjoyed playing it tho.

Its a pretty phenomenal bullet hell influenced rogue like. Visuals are stunning, gameplay is frantic, story isn't spoon-fed similarly to Dark Souls games, which allows a sense of mystery to the game lore.

I haven't had any performance issues like some of the other reviews suggest, worst is very occasional frame drops. The game is difficult, but once the game clicks for you it is not an impassable challenge, and certain things like ether / weapon skills, character upgrades persist between runs. My only criticism really, is I wish there was more game, not that it is short, its just so fun I wish there was more challenges and lore to explore. The Tower Of Sisyphus is a cool addition for end game which is a never ending grind, and it has its own story elements but there is only so much juice you can squeeze from that fruit.

If you are inclined to bullet hell games, or rogue likes I reckon you will really like the experience. I would sit on a 9/10 it is really that good - I wont forget this gaming experience anytime soon.

It's a 3/5

Pros:
It's incredible asthetically and the story is so intriguing.
The gunplay is incredibly satisfying and the bosses and monsters are incredibly designed, specially their attack patterns.
You will love it for the first few hours but then the cracks start to show.

Problems:
Aether, the currency that you get to keep between runs only allows you to get artifacts which are not "run changing" and that helpful, it's ver unhelpful, oh and the artifact is completely random
You only get to keep equipment that is pertinent to the story and that allows you to traverse the map and you can't purchase unlockables either with Aether at the begining of a run
The currency you need to buy upgrades on a run actually dissapear after a few seconds so it ends up being scarse and not worth getting too close to enemies and potentially getting damaged which stops you from purchasing helpful items.
Health items don't heal up that much and enemies NEVER drop them, you have to be lucky on the RNG to get around the map.
If you play coop and you are not hosting, you don't get ANY progress with after you die or even finish a run. It's the most stupid decision and it makes no sense, it just discourages people from playing together.

Overall, even for a roguelike, the gameplay is TOO grindy, trust me, WAY more than you'd expect.
You never really feel like you are making much progress, which makes it feel extremely repetitive and after a few hours just plain boring.

I get people like hard and difficult games but this game with how few healing options it has to offer is just completely horrible. You are on >30% life for most of the game if you dont have integrity healing on your persoon. Obolite is hard to obtain a ton of, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but you can't even stock up on them. Then as soon as you die, welcome back to the start, with hours of progress lost. I was under the impression you just restarted whatever act you were on over, but no you restart from square one with nothing but your permanent unlocks. And oh, did I mention, if you arent the party leader you dont get to keep any of your unlocks, so good like finding a second person who wants to play with you and make no progress after a death. Biggest waste of $30, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

There was a point where I almost gave up about halfway through, but I'm so glad I decided to give it another shot. The feeling of unlocking abilities as you progress to be able to further explore the biomes was nice as well as the excellent gunplay (some guns I hated but others are the definition of power fantasy). Enemies are frustrating but never felt unfair and the only boss I really got stuck on was biome 3 (still one of the coolest boss fights in recent memory though). The gameplay loop fits great with the story being told and while it isn't quite horror, it is definitely unsettling. Cannot wait for Saros, the only sad part is I will have to buy a PS5 to play it.

+ visuals, music, gameplay - the game has a tone that is unique and the way they made the gameplay loop fit the story is one of my favorite things about it
+ being able to suspend a run to come back later makes this a game you can sit on for hours or just play for a quick session to pick back up later
+ co op is an option but personally I didn't get a chance to try it

- no handholding (this is a plus to me but for people who don't enjoy more hardcore games)
- the starting pistol

I remember bouncing off of Returnal when I first played it. There is a bit of a learning curve to its bullet hell madness. What kept me coming back was the story, specifically a 20th century house in the middle of a dark forest in an alien world. Something about that imagery stuck with me. I just had to know more. 20 hours later, I'm glad I stuck around. It's is an incredibly well-made game that respects the player and isn't afraid to leave them in the dark.

Пытался полюбить эту игру, но не смог. Поэтому долго оттягивал момент покупки.

Финны из Housemarque никогда не делали AAA-тайтлов, они всю жизнь делали аркадные проекты, попадающие под определение инди.

Но в эпоху больших кинематографичных проектов и огромных бюджетов решили соответствовать.

Returnal это большое развитие для студии, но все равно это игра не уровня Uncharted и God of War. Это даже не Order 1886 или что еще там пытались запустить PlayStation.

В итоге у крутых проектов ценник 70 $, у Returnal 60 $. При всем уважении к стараниям разработчиков, игра не стоит таких денег. Стоило порезать бюджеты и продавать по полной цене за 30-40 $. Вот это справедливо.

Я честно пытался заставить себя полюбить Returnal, но мне не зашло. Сильного сюжета тут нет, одинаковые лабиринты-локации. В недрах Steam полно куда более интересных проектов за меньшие деньги.

Как рогалики мне куда больше понравились The Binding of Isaac и Hades, притом что они не стараются быть играми Sony.

Una obra maestra del caos y la persistencia. Returnal redefine lo que un roguelike puede llegar a ser con una ambientación de ciencia ficción oscura que te atrapa desde el primer minuto. i don't have the best hardware but this level of optimization is pretty unacceptable

i have to run the game on lowest graphics on a RTX 4060 Ti to get stable 60FPS which drops anywhere from 20FPS to 10FPS in combat situations, where you're gonna need the frames the most

of the little i played it didn't particularly impress me either; the game is meandering and takes a long time to introduce core mechanics; like they present all these things to you that have very clear cut solutions but just aren't available to you yet like that weird orange nub that looks like some kind of grapple point or enemies with red shields that cant be broken yet, maybe things i could unlock if the game was actually playable

dodging bullets is not too difficult; dash i-frames are super lenient, cover is abound; in the two runs i played i took more damage from environmental hazards or run gimmicks (like that one parasite thing that makes you take damage every time you pick up an item) and died pretty much exclusively to intense lag spikes and frame drops where one second im alive, game runs at 1FPS, then the next im dead. in between runs the game crashed on start-up.

the scan mechanic feels very unnecessary to me. i would rather the game just show me the damn pickup instead of having it hold it. im sure its supposed to be a deterrent from letting players pick up stuff mid combat but im not sure what the point of that is from what ive played so atm it just feels like a mechanic that exists to waste my time

maybe if the game was playable id be more willing to give it a fair shake but in it's current state its a hard buy to justify at $24, much less $60 full price

You know when you're playing badmitten outside and your opponent serves high and its directly aligned with the sun? Thats how it feels dodging attacks in this game. So many times projectiles will be obstruced by your 3rd person character or get lost in the mix of a dozen other light effects. Its got its moments but 90% of the game is just frustrating to me.

Il gioco come shooter è davvero valido e consigliatissimo potendo contare anche su una notevole atmosfera che rende interessante l'esplorazione e il recupero dei "collezionabili" che aiutano a svelare la trama. C'è però da fare una considerazione importante, ovvero che il gioco è molto difficile a causa dello sbilanciamento eccessivo tra la forza del personaggio e quella dei nemici il che obbliga a ripetere tantissime volte i singoli biomi che alla fine risultano inevitabilmente ripetitivi causando una sensazione di noia davvero notevole. Se vi piace ripetere allo sfinimento le stesse stanze per godere del miglioramento delle vostre performance come giocatore allora il gioco fa per voi se invece tendete ad annoiarvi facilmente guardate oltre questo prodotto non è per voi.

Sonys best "exclusive" this generation by far. Not many roguelikes are like Returnal. Selene has such compelling character development, and the art direction is nothing short of masterful. The bullet-hell game play is high octane, visually rich, unconventional for this genre & it works. And the challenge is brutal. This is not a game for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If Scavengers Reign & Groundhogs Day had a baby, that's Returnal. Truly a must buy for any seasoned gamer.

First of all I LOVED this game on PS5 which is why I bought it again when released on PC. I knew it had issues so I waited a few years. Now playing with my shiny oled and a 5070ti it starts out perfect like I expect. Give 15-30min TOPS and the FPS plummet and do not fix themselves. Restart the game we are good but nobody is going to continue to do that.
Its really sad this is STILL an issue. Especially with them releasing a new game soon, knowing they gave up on this makes me not want to support them regardless of how much I love their games.

Очень годный рогалик, сюжетный, взрослый.
Таких мало на самом деле, я прошел все акты за 26 часов примерно, планирую поиграть еще 3-5 часов на з......чку достижений , но на самом деле процедурная генерация скудная.. потому как , когда вы 3-4 раза пройдете один и тот же биом заметите, что ничего кроме именно порядка комнат в которых вы уже побывали - не генерируется)))
А когда найдете все записи из журнала исследований и т.д - игра в целом перестанет бросать вызов.
умер за всю игру раза 3 ( 2 на гиперионе потому как не повезло с расходниками) и 1 раз на каком то рядовом мобе, все остальные были анигилированы с 1 раза.
Башня тоже неплохое испытание, но там рандома под генерацию причем тупого рандома - еще больше , чем в обычной игре.
В целом на 30-40 часов годное приключение, по скидке самое то

Un gioco incredibile che unisce il bullet hell agli sparatutto in terza persona, frenetico, impegnativo e molto soddisfacente. Quando esce la run giusta diventi infermabile ma attenzione a non abbassare mai la guardia.
Tutto questo tenuto insieme da una bella trama che vi spingerà a proseguire pure dopo la 20esima morte. consigliato al 100%

Returnal is a super fun, fast-paced roguelike shooter set in an interesting, dark world with a mysterious story. I think the game is very unique and of very high quality.

The best part is the weapon upgrade system. You’re encouraged to constantly switch weapons and play with ones you might not like at first, but they gradually become stronger as you unlock new perks for them. This makes the gameplay fun and every run unique, so you don’t end up using the same one or two weapons every time.

The only downsides are the long runs, and for achievement hunters, the random collectibles can be frustrating.

But aside from that, everything else in this game is definitely worth it.

Kennt Ihr das? Man kauft sich eine neu erschienene Spielkonsole und da gibts noch sehr wenige Spiele? Und eins davon ist Returnal? Kennt ihr das? Und weil es noch fast keine Spiele gibt, geht Returnal gerade so in Ordnung auf besagter, neuen Konsole. Aber wirklich nur anfangs und gerade so...

Die Situation ist aber die, dass wir uns hier auf dem PC befinden und dieses Spiel ist weder gut für PC noch gut für Konsolen. Es ist qualitativ wie quantitativ eben ein schrecklich oberflächliches Game mit langweiligen Mechaniken.

Und dann Sony-typisch total berfärbt in Neonfarben-Gesülze. Die Levels sind absolutes Minimum und lianearer geht nicht mehr. Im Grunde ist das hier sowas wie die Ergüsse von Ubi Soft kurz bevor sie von Tencent eingekauft wurden. Wie zBsp. die letzte Prince Of Persia-Verschandelung.

Im Grossen und Ganzen gefallen mir die Sony Spiele nicht, weils sie eben aus deren Konsole kommen. Aber das hier ist echt noch weiter unteres Niveau und eigentlich nicht einmal als Indiespiel OK.

Naja, wieder Geld für nix ausgegeben. Und diesmal doppelt für nix, denn das Geld ging an Sony, die nicht mal länger auf dem PC Markt bestanden hatten.

Sony will ja in Zukunft keine Spiele mehr auf PC portieren? Tja, dann Tschau Tschau und machts gut und bla bla bla... hahahaha... für mich ist das eh kein Verlust. Die können sich ja gerne mit Microsoft oder EA zusammentun und mit denen weiteren Mist produzieren. Den AAA Spielemarkt haben sie ja bereits demontiert. Von daher... wen interessierts?

Liebe Sony, was Ihr da macht ist für Spieler nicht gut!

Can remap all buttons except the triggers... which have been set up poorly.
Very poor upgrade/collectable system, most upgrades come with bigger drawbacks than benefits.
Very little to boost you on subsequent runs, was stronger in my 1st run than my 20th.
Gameplay too repetitive for that kind of setup.

А почему эта игра вообще считается хорошей в линейке игр ps5? Это скучнейший буллетхелл (И это наверное единственное достижение игры - выйти в таком жанре и стать популярной). Сюжет - скучный, без спойлеров, но вы его скорее всего уже видели в какой-нибудь шизойдной драме про синдром потери. Геймплей - ну, в тебя стреляют, ты стреляешь, в 1982 игры игрались примерно так же, в 2д правда. Графика - ну тут да, челы постарались, сделали красиво, для года выхода игры, но какой в этом смысл? Партиклы прикольно разлетаются, текстурки даже выглядят не мыльными в 2к, а ты во всем этом бегаешь и спамишь левую кнопку мыши в противников. Ни тактики, ни уникальных ситуаций, ни БОССОВ С УНИКАЛЬНЫМ подходом - ничего в этой игре нет. Формально, есть подводный уровень, который вроде как уникальная ситуация, но все что он делает - понижает гравитацию и делает все пушки, которые не хитсканят, неиграбельными.
Но вот самый ♥♥♥♥♥♥, который явно пришел из 1982 года - это возможность носить только одно оружие. Я не уверен конечно, я не прошел игру на 100%, но за прохождение просто всех актов игры второго слота под оружие не открывается. Почему это проблема? Потому что в игре ♥♥♥♥♥♥ гора мобов, и даже пара боссов, которые летают. А это значит, что если ты пришел к ним с дробовиком, то ты можешь сразу откатываться на чекпоинт. И разработчики это продумали - перед каждым боссфайтом тебе дают валяющийся на полу пистолет, да и где босс файт тоже понятно. Вот только на аренах может случаться так, что у тебя тот же самый дробовик, или гранатомет например, а все мобы - летающие черти в которых очень тяжело попадать. Почему нельзя дать второй слот под оружие - непонятно
Боссы тут просто говно. Они не сложные, не интересные, не способные дать отпор. Прокачка - говно. Я не знаю, сколько я всего еще не открыл, но я прошел 2 акта из 3 (3 это тру концовка) и ни один предмет не делает что-то интересное, не меняет геймплей

Amazing gunplay, smooth movement, outstanding atmosphere and effects, INCREDIBLE music and sound design. Sadly the story is not that good and tries way too hard to be cryptic and mysterious, but, it's enjoyable anyways and the rest of the game makes up for it. Very recommended.
