Very interesting genre combining fps, horror, fmv and adventure. The game is playbable but the controls are terrible especially when enemies spawns infinitely. Healing is total nightmare does not work 80% of the time. The Vials green or red are healing potions. The healing scheme is trash. The rest is not great but acceptable. I for inventory, place your weapons in the inventory one after the other don't place ammo next to a weapon nothing shows up on key 2 for example. Open a door open inventory pick the key. The game is not very self-explanatory. Also FMV has no sound or mine went out when i pressed escaped the first time. Press H to see control scheme. You can hold right mous button and hold left mouse button to move up and down the screen view however a lot of times the key starts shooting your weapon. That is why this game is half-decent good game but trash trash controls but not unplayanle like those star wars games FMV. Needs a remaster or upgrade.

Get it on sale for 2 bucks not more.

The game is a point and click adventure in the guise of a shooter. There are some complaints about a couple of the puzzles being cryptic but I think they're so in an acceptable level. The first person shooting of the game is substandard so don't play this for that reason. However the game has literally otherworldly vibes to it with a lot of interesting locations and the acted fmv scenes are well performed. My favorite moments were the puzzle about lighting a bong and the cutscene of meeting Belial for the first time.

Игра по прежнему кажется чем-то необычным, но не из-за контента, а из-за управления и графония. :)
И отсюда "интересность" игры кажется странностью. Некорректно так оценивать игру, которая вышла 30 лет назад. :)

Уверяю, игра неплохо сохранилась для своего возраста - как минимум, без проблем запускается и бодренько играется. Просто нужно привыкнуть "переключаться": то нам нужна мышь, то нам нужны клавиши в левой части клавиатуры; стрелки нужны всегда.

Сюжет мрачноватый и достаточно навороченный. Вот вам и рыцари из древних орденов, и демоны, и другие миры. Круто? Круто!
Геймплей - если привыкнуть к "переключению", о котором говорил выше - крайне увлекает: это смесь шутера от первого лица с point'n'click приключением. Абсолютно не сложное с точки зрения шутера, но заставляющее подумать, когда мы говорим о point'n'click.
Атмосфера игры великолепна, здесь нечего сказать. Детали, которые есть в игре ("красные глазки", канделябры, роботы, разбивающиеся стёкла, рыцарские доспехи, боевая система), изумительны для своего времени. Есть небольшая вариативность в плане диалогов (в основном ведущая к гейм оверам, но тем не менее).

Понятно, что Realms of the Haunting уже никому не нужна и мы никогда не увидим ни ремастер, ни ремейк, ни ачивки; но, если хотите поиграть во что-нибудь старое и не боитесь древних механик в играх - отличный выбор.

Что до рандомных ключей - вы знали, что вам достанется случайная игра.

The Pros: It's a classic! It has a rich story with lots of lore. Great puzzles with a FPS format.
I remember playing this when it was relatively new. Having no walkthroughs or tips on how to play
it took a fair amount of time to get through.
The Cons: The control mapping is...something to be desired, BUT! the mapping has been changed for steam, so it is better than the original believe it or not! Cut scenes are cool, but the people are all bad actors. They probably got them discount at a porn convention. You have to pay attention in cut-scenes to know where you need to go at times. Some puzzles aren't that instinctual, or are a bit clunky.

I do recommend this game though. It is very unique! I wish they would remake it, or adapt it
into a movie of sorts. Just clean up the cheesy parts and we're good!

I think this has aged well. I played it briefly on a friend's PC waaay back in 1997 or so. While the controls are dated and clunky by today's standards, they're still much better than comparable games from the era. This mixes peak FMV horror with FPS and a general '90s adventure game format. It's a neat mix that works remarkably well and should have been done more often. The FMV segments are top tier for the time, as are the performances from its actors. My only real complaint is a minor one, but sometimes the areas are just too dark. But, all in all, this is a steal for $2.99, especially if you want to experience a few of the coolest gaming trends of the mid-to-late '90s.

Extremely good mix of point and click adventure and FPS. With its dark, almost horror atmosphere, and its focus on exploration, it almost feels like a first person Survival Horror game! The FMV cinematics are a blast from its era and a real treat for progressing through the game. It may need some tweaking and getting accustomed to its archaic controls, but once you get used to them, it really is an extremely enjoyable 90s experience.

Realms of the Haunting is one of those old classics that you can't help but pick up every couple of years and play it through. While the game is fairly dated, by today's standards, the story and experience are still as solid as ever. I'm going to break down this review into a few categories, because with it being an old game there are a few things you might want to know;

READ THE MANUAL:
We're going to start out with the basics here and say that everything you need to know can be found in the user manual. Steam actually ships this manual with the game. You'll find it in the game's installation folder. In the manual you'll find everything from the basic controls to how the interface works. It's critical that you read through this if you want to make it more than 5 minutes without becoming frustrated. This game was made back in the days of DOOM, when video games didn't baby their players with in-game tutorials. The manual IS your tutorial.

CONTROLS:
This is where a vast amount of negative reviews for this game come from. Too many kids out there, who have been spoiled by the WASD industry standard, are finding out how much they actually suck when faced with a real video game. Mastering the controls of RotH isn't actually difficult, you just have to get over your dependence on the WASD standard. To play this game you'll find your left hand on either the arrow keys (occasionally reaching for PGUP and PGDN) or surfing the number keypad. Your right hand will be busy on the mouse, clicking around the screen to interact with the world. Once again, read the manual. I'll give you a little tip here though. To drink a potion, open your inventory (which freezes the game) and left click the potion to pick it up, then immediately right-click.

GRAPHICS:
Interestingly enough, the graphics of this game are somewhat dated but that almost adds to the charm of playing the game. Think of the old-school DOOM style graphics, where you see an animated character but they are only displayed at certain angles and not truly a 3D object. The environment is first rate, bringing you both the atmosphere and anxiety of a mystery horror game. One special thing to note about this game is that every once in a while you'll run into a story scene that's done with actual live-action. I'm not going to say the acting is 5-star quality, but it's certainly good enough for the game. At the time I must admit it was probably quite the feat to put the live actors into the computer animated environment. I've gotta give them a lot of credit for that.

STORY:
This is, arguably, the best part about Realms of the Haunting. The story is extremely well thought out, however it constantly leaves you wondering what's going to happen next. You'll start out feeling much like the main character Adam; frustrated, just trying to survive, and having no idea what the hell you've been dragged into. Your only driving force is your father, trapped in some afterlife prison of the damned. As the story unfolds, and you meet allies along the way, you begin to realise your role is much greater than you could have ever imagined. By the time you reach the story ending you'll wish there was a sequel.

AUDIO:
There is a lot to say about audio done correctly in video games, and this game is the perfect example of that. The music is basically an old midi scale, without much definition of the musical instruments being played, however it's very well scored and fits the theme with perfection. As some examples; When you're wanding the dark mansion the music is low and mysterious. When you're in the catacombs the music is more adventurous and almost induces a bit of anxiety. When you enter a big fight the music kicks up into far more action-based. Some moments even see the music cutting off completely, to give you that feeling of anticipation that something is about to happen. While it's true that the midi music is fairly dated, in this game it's so well done that you won't even notice the lower quality.

All in all, I would say that if you can tolerate not being able to use WASD, this is certainly a game worth having. In addition, for any 40ish year old retro gamers, this is a must-have for your collection. You're not going to regret it.

Realms of the Haunting напоминает смесь **DOOM**, **The 7th Guest** и **Alone in the Dark**. Ты оказываешься в мрачном особняке, полном демонов, загадок и намеков на оккультные ритуалы. Здесь **нужно не только стрелять, но и решать головоломки**, искать ключи и разбираться в сюжете, который порой кажется наркоманским трипом.

Местами игра удивляет своим **кинематографичным повествованием** — вместо стандартных диалогов тут есть полноценные [i]FMV-вставки[/i] (реальные актеры на зеленом фоне). Это придает игре уникальное ретро-очарование, хотя местами выглядит комично.

ROTH fängt gut an und verfällt dann leider viel zu schnell in absolutem Wahnsinn: Ab den Portalreisen war bei mir mental Schluss. Die Labyrinthe nehmen Überhand, die Rätsel sind teilweise absolut grenzwertig, die Spielerführung nicht vorhanden, das Backtracking aus der Hölle, die Cutscenes trashig, die Geschichte weird, die Monster blöd - auf einer Negativliste verdient es wahrlich einen außerordentlichen Preis. Aber trotzdem ist der Nostalgie-Charme da. Trotzdem war es so wild, dass ich wissen wollte was da noch kam. Ob ich es daher trotzdem irgendwie empfehlen kann? Auf dem Papier nicht, aber für jeden nostalgischen Wahnsinnigen = ja, bitte. Greif zu und versuch es zu meistern. Aber tu dir den Gefallen und nutze instant die Lösung ;)

[b]Realms of the Haunting[/b] to bardzo dobry klasyczny tytuł z gatunku gier przygodowych z pazurem strzeleckiej akcji rodem z pierwszego DOOMa czy też Blooda w którym to gracz wciela się w syna pastora walczącego z mrocznymi siłami zła próbującego przedostać się do naszego świata. To również produkcja ze świetnie zaprojektowaną i przedstawioną fabułą, urokliwą atmosferą oraz zmyślnie opracowanymi zagadkami logicznymi tworzące niezwykłą kombinację od której niejednokrotnie będzie wam ciężko się oderwać.

Nie jest to tytuł dla każdego to pewne, dedykowany jest on głównie zagorzałym miłośnikom klasycznych gier przygodowych, którzy cenią coś więcej niż samą oprawę graficzną.

Nie zwracajcie bacznej uwagi na mój czas gry na platformie Steam gdyż jest nieadekwatny z rzeczywistym czasem spędzonym z tym tytułem, który posiadam i ukończyłem na innej cyfrowej platformie z grami – bardziej odpowiedniej dla klasyków.

[h1]Ale do rzeczy:[/h1]

Jak już zdołałem nadmienić na samym początku tej recenzji mamy tym razem do czynienia z klasycznym tytułem z gatunku gier przygodowych z pazurem strzeleckiej akcji rodem z pierwszego DOOMa czy też Blooda w którym to gracz wciela się w syna pastora walczącego z mrocznymi siłami zła próbującego przedostać się do naszego świata.

Rozgrywka jak w większości gier z tamtych okresów będzie miała nieco hermetyczną strukturę (ale to nic złego, takie czasy) polegająca na eksploracji mrocznej i tajemniczej posiadłości, rozwiązywaniu pomniejszych łamigłówek oraz dynamicznej walce z diabolicznymi monstrami znajdującymi się w jego ciemnych zakamarkach. Fabularny aspekt jest dosyć rozbudowany, co dodatkowo buduje narastającą atmosferę motywująca do dalszej gry - przy czym filmowe „aktorskie” wstawki nakręcają grową nostalgię. Doświadczeni weterani na tym polu będą wiedzieć o co chodzi.

Co do kwestii technicznych to gra działa bezproblemowo na współczesnym sprzęcie, oprawa audio-wizualna jest dobra (to gra z 1997 roku), nie spodziewajcie się współczesnych fajerwerków, sterowanie banalnie proste.

Awesome old school mix up of FPS and adventure games. Sure, the story is a nonsensical fever dream, graphics are unappealing in spots, a large part of the game is just too damn dark, theres some definite BS with the way some of the puzzles are solved, and the combat gets repetitive after awhile, yet theres a whole lot to appreciate about RotH. Theres just no other games quite like this. Plus for $3 you just cant really go wrong. Especially in the month of October.

Important thing: I didn't make it past the last three chapters because I got stuck on a puzzle that can't be reset to the default position (UPDATE: Actually, it can be reset, according to some comments in guides here, on Steam discussions). I watched the ending on youtube.

Also game was easily patched to play with WASD control scheme, so there's no big deal with control schemes at all and I don't understand complains. Even if you didn't install any patches, pace of the game is not that fast and, I suppose, in that case you would have intended difficulty while fighting the enemies.

Realms of the Haunting manages to suprise all the way through. Even when you only look at the game you have a strange mix of horror, Full Motion Video, First Person Shooter and Point and Click Adventure genres in one project. Surpires continues when you realise that this game is not only about spooky scary haunted mansion: you would explore other dimensions and play a massive role in biblical plot, where you would be interact with big roster of funny and even interesting characters. Even the ending can be a surprise... In some ways.

What I really like in this game is the atmosphere. Game is 28 years old and even today it has such unique vibes similar to something, when you read a good horror book. Monsters doesn't scare me at all here (mainly, because of their design with this pre-rendered 3D model sprites), but soundtrack and visuals create strong atmosphere for a whole game. For some reason, Realms of the Haunting feels like first Alone in the Dark and Ecstatica.

I love that here all books, letters and maps works like real ones: letters and books contains a bunch of information, not that typical "one crucial short phrase". Maps is kinda the same - you need to open it from inventory and there's zero quest or player markers.

Exploring the game world is, mostly, very interesting - mentioned books, bits of environmental storytelling, various rooms and locations with a bunch of decorations and interesting design choices overall. For me, game never feels boring in terms of exploration.

FMV here is, surprisingly, nice too. Yeah, they looks like a low budged movie (if we compare this with a cinema), but this stuff is interesting, with normal acting and overall directing is quite good too. Bring back memories about first Phantasmagoria.

But hey, it's a game and I need to mention the gameplay. I have my fun here, but feels like adventure elements works better than combat. Most of the puzzles are interesting, tense and I was very curious about them. I can even say that if you love good puzzles and exploration in horror games - you need to check this game by yourself or on youtube. Nothing terrible about shooting (and melee!), but enemy AI and movement combined with player weapons projectiles (we also have here a hitscan weapons) is not good. Some enemies feels a little bit spongy, but, overall, it looks good, sounds good and feels nice, even with slightly braindead-projectile-dodging-enemies.

But... Sadly, my main problems with all this things started near the end, where game, for some reason, start to feel less Alone in the Dark and became more Myst-like... Piles of logic puzzles that can be in any other game, because they has near zero connection with stuff that happens. Game just locks you in some rooms and you need to go through some trials. Trials and LABYRINTH. Oh yeah! What an adventure game from 80's or 90's without damn labyrinth near the end?

Also game shift focus from "haunted spooky mansion exploration" (with classic survival horror progression like in metroidvanias) to other dimensions. Yeah, they look sometimes cool and it's a nice change of things, but I was quite confused with that changes, because at some point it start to feel sometimes like a different game, I guess?

Plot also was a strange thing. Starts interesting, but this type of narrative is not quite my cup of tea. All this angels, demons, The Chosen One with Mary Sue-girl friend, artifacts and blah-blah-blah. Also a bunch of strange characters from other dimensions looks like a cringe and weak attempt to make this simple, classic plot looks way more complex that it is. Again, I kinda enjoyed story here, but for me this is the same level as "horror" cartoons for teenagers or stuff like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Has alot of heart, effort and a charm, but just not my favourite stuff.

I'm glad that I kinda "completed" this game. This is a unique and bold game that can remind something, but even to this day has no spiritual sibling. You can think of Killing Time (both 3DO and PC versions), Phantasmagoria, Alone in the Dark, Bad Mojo, Krondor series, BloodNet, Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet, Clive Barker's Undying, The Legacy: Realm of Horror, UnInvited series, Elvira games (Waxworks, Personal Nightmare, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark and Elvira II: The Jaws of Cerberus) and some other titles, BUT there is no other game like Realms of the Haunting.

And, what I appreciate most, the game gave a real sense of adventure. Too bad the last puzzle turned out to be very frustrating for me.

Try this game. Really. Open some guide and fan sites like From the Tower Wiki to read documents there (because in-game is too pixelated and hard to read) and have a few wonderful evenings.

This is the perfect example of a game that is just dying for a remake. There is a lot of good in this game, and it was doing some interesting things back in the day with mood and story.

But fast forward to today, and the biggest problem is the controls. Not using the wasd layout is a killer. You are going to be Texas Two Stepping them across the keyboard and back to the mouse. I get that this was a little before games like Quake Ii and Half-Life, so it becomes a downfall of it time. But jsut try moving, and then jumping, and then back to analyze something, or shooting.

And as good as the game was...if it is this close to unplayable due to the control layout, then gamers aren't going to pick it up unless they have a deep connection with it to begin with.

So what we have is a game that is dying for a remake that will probably never see one. That makes it i left in the past as a memory.

And yes...I read the manual before playing.

This is an amazing gem from the 90ies if you get past the -by nowadays standards- unintuitive control scheme.
Great atmosphere, weird and quirky places, awesome pixely graphics and Interplay's trademark production values.
I also enjoeyd the FMV cutscenes.
Played this mainly on gog, but this STEAM version is fine too.

Can be had for pennies. I recommend it.

This game is a beautiful blend of gaming styles. The Doom clone shooting mechanics are fun due to the bevy of interesting weapons. The FMV cutscenes are highly entertaining, and the story itself is a fun combination of fantasy and horror elements. The puzzle solving and exploration is mostly rewarding. There are a couple of issues with the story and level design. Although the story is a delightful combination of horror and fantasy tropes with likable characters that have chemistry, elements of the story's ending feel rushed. I like exploring the mansion and intriguing realms in the game, but the level design features one too many mazes for my liking. It is not perfect by any means, but it is a unique blend of game styles that I have never really encountered in combination before.

Things to consider:
you gotta play it as it comes for it to work properly, no dosbox-X or anything fancy
its gunna take some getting used to the controls if you're unfamiliar with games from this genre / time period
if you prefer controller there are some awesome guides made for that
puzzles and backtracking can be a little weird sometimes (no shame in using a guide)
first playthrough can be around of 20-30 hours long
read the manual within the game files (i didn't read it, but its recommended you do)

I've always groaned whenever i ran into a puzzle early in a game, because i severely suck at puzzle solving. The only puzzle heavy game I've ever played well without a guide was Super Metroid. Despite that, I'm getting through this quite fine.
There is a ton of ways you can gather info if you're thorough enough, such as dialog through inspection of items, areas, people and things. Lots of interactivity with the environment; If you can do something unique like light a candle, try it everywhere.

Combat is a little plain, but the weapons are fun to use. Pistol has a sick reload. Lots of unique weapons, so it wont be all guns.

Music is nice, some environments are pretty, cutscenes are fun to watch. quite the gem :)

Only issue is that you might get lost in some of the areas of the game, some maze like areas and huge dark caves.

a more than 20 hour long campaign game for 3/4 of a dollar on sale right now. Even standard price its just $3 :D

This game single handedly got me into FMV games. I was consistently interested all the way through it and i've only recently just played this game as someone with next to no experience with this type of game. A perfect example of how good FMV can be. While the game definitely has some point of no returns and encourages having multiple save files i still found it generally easy to grasp as someone who plays a fair amount of videogames.

From 1996, a notable experiment mixing fps, graphical adventure and survival horror elements.

Pros:

- beautiful environments
- evocative atmosphere
- live actors videos are AMAZING lol
- general game experience is ok and funny

Cons:
- sometimes repetitive
- difficult controls
- bots are graphically limited and way too much stupid (i.e.: if you exit a room they don't follow you and start to move around randomly lol)
- a couple of absurd enigmas and pixel hunting

...superPro: the game is old, with very old mechanics... but in the end it aged well like good wine, and it can give a pleasant experience if you want to remember retrogaming sensations.I recommend it, expecially with a good sale.

This game is insane. It's both a doom type fps game and a point and click adventure, two genres that were thought to be in opposition. The FMVs are silly but solid, and the story is deeply rooted in judaic/christian lore, which is one of my favorite myths. You even stumble upon 'the tree'.

I will warn that the ending is a bit depressing... but interesting. Definitely raises questions.

Highly recommended game, it's simply a masterpiece, a must play in your life.
No words can describe it well enough.

Discovered that game back in 1997 and for some reasons, it never left me, thinking about it from time to time, especially that crazy tormenting story, its characters, the mansion and THAT damn ending.

I went deep inside it this time, finished it within 24H, not rushing at all, reading books and parchments and enjoying every bit of it.
Graphics are superb (need a little setup), it aged very well, playability is still also good (same, needs some setup if you cannot live without strafe).

So what are you waiting for ? Take that damn taxi and go to that mansion in the middle of nowhere, by midnight and during a thunderstorm !

This is a very good game, it’s in a weird way similar to Resident Evil (it even released in the same year) as far as shooting and puzzles go, even if it’s in first person. I will analyze briefly the three main points which are guns, puzzles and plot.
The games works perfectly on modern system thanks to DosBox (I am playing on Win 10 without trouble). Just a little tip always doublecheck the game saves correctly, you don't want to have nasty surprises when you load.
First and foremost, read the manual, there are no explanations in game of what to do. Things like using an item on you are mandatory to know and could cause you to stuck. Also you can’t change the controls, deal with it.
Guns: the old and clunky controls works for you and your enemies as well. You will learn quickly where you can take advantage of the environment (big halls, corners, corridors) and save ammo, but when you are ambushed or against fast enemies, unleash hell. Sometimes you can use the enviroment at your advantage, luring enemies into traps. Keep in mind health vials are very rare, ammo is not. As a rule of cool in the 90’s a Winchester is better than whatever magical artifact in dealing with skeletons or demons.
Puzzles: there is no clown item juggling, there is even an option (F3) to let you auto select the object for a puzzle, if you have it in your inventory, just to keep your sanit. If you don’t want it, don’t use it. Beware this option DON'T solve every puzzle, and sometimes it's best to deactivate it. The game requires a lot of exploration and interaction with objects you cold think they are just decorations (like a sword hanging over a wall) and sometimes you just need to understand a portrait of a guy reading a book is just “touch the library”. When you are stuck, touch everything and look over and under you, in case you miss a coin in the middle of a grass patch. The levels are not insanely big, and usually you are walled over going in the wrong direction for too long.
Plot: the plot starts really bonkers, you'll have to wait a long time (about 10 hours) to understand what is happening. Thank God there is litterally a moment "ask me everything and I shall answer". The cinematics with real actors are gorgeous, I love that stuff, and there is a good compartment of mythos, strange places and religious themes. You need to interact a lot with the inventory (objects, and people) to expand the plot and choices and dialogues changes as you go further in the game.
The game just sucks you into the story and the environment even if those are extremely archaic, rarely you find this level of immersion in a modern game. The music is also extremely good and creeps around you keeping a constant atmosphere of mystery and restlessness.
If you are not intimidated by the controls, this game is surely a must.

Для меня же окончательное мнение составилось именно с финалом - раскрытие получилось не совсем понятным, но если сопоставить все происходящее и где мы оказались - сюжет начинает играть яркими красками.
Основным плюсом стал, как уже понятно, сюжет, в остальном игра просто ни о чем - попытка сделать свою изюминку с управлением оказалась полным провалом; за клавиатурой с мышкой сидишь как за диджейским пультом. Графика - тут и по скриншотам все ясно (и это в то время, когда выходит первая резьба...). Атмосфера оставляет в полном неведении большую часть игры, как ко всему происходящему относиться - я до финала так и не понял.

Строго на любителя и ценителя всего такого "винтажного"

This may be a cult classic blend of first person point-and-click type puzzling, FPS, and FMV with some impressive lighting, textures, and claymation reminiscent enemy sprites BUT it is unfortunately impenetrable for a modern player. I triled, I really did. Archaic controls, terrible bullet-sponge combat, obtuse puzzles, confusing level design, backtracking, awful platforming, terrible inventory UI, and the occasional soft-lock issue with moving on to an area without having picked up the required items or performed the prerequisite actions. It's telling that players complain of getting stuck even after reading the instruction booklet and using a walkthrough.

Really great game, one of my favourite shooters in fact. I even beat it several times before I finally bought a copy from Steam since I found it so compelling.
It's a mix of classic adventure and FPS, with oodles of puzzles and exploration to be had when you aren't shooting creatures. Unfortunately the shooting isn't great, and I think that there are major issues with bullet sponges towards the end of the game, but most of my enjoyment, and what I found makes this game unique, came from the adventuring anyway. You'll visit all sorts of fantastical places in Realms of the Haunting as the mysteries of the manor are gradually unveiled to you.
There's a lot to explore, and a lot to do, with there being some missable content if you don't care to scour every corner of the manor, as well as the other realms that are connected to it. Although I have 9.1 hours played on Steam, I accumulated that playtime during my fourth playthrough, by which point I was already very familiar with the game.
My only real faults are the shooting not being up to scratch, and the controls which I always end up remapping every time I reinstall this game as they're hopelessly awkward.
It's just a shame that there isn't much else quite like this. The closest game that comes to mind is Killing Time, which I didn't like very much, and, I suppose, the original System Shock, but that's quite a stretch.

I bought Realms of the Haunting (RotH) when it was released back in 1996 and whilst never managing to complete the game, I got very close to the end. Having recently re-bought RotH on a whim, I finally completed the game and it’s been a superb experience from start to finish!

RotH was an impressive and ground-breaking game for 1996. Replaying RotH in 2023 the visuals are wonderfully retro, holding up very well considering their age, and the game positively oozes atmosphere. The sound design from the brooding MIDI soundtrack to the audio samples make the game well worth playing with headphones on. I was relieved to discover that the acting still holds up very well given they’re twenty-seven(!) years old, having been recorded when the technology was still in its infancy.

However, RotH is still an old game that was very difficult on its release and that difficulty remains in 2023. The controls were clunky in 1996 and feel positively archaic in 2023. I persevered with them and after about an hour I didn’t miss using modern mouse look (you can mouse look but it’s best avoided). The controls also make the platforming sections borderline frustrating the first time you encounter them. I also want to highlight that RotH is not an FPS. RotH is a first-person adventure game with emphasis on exploration, puzzle solving (there are plenty of these) that also happens to include a shooting element to break up the game play and pressurise the player. If you approach RotH like a classic FPS you will not get far. You have been warned! :)

RotH is a game that provides plenty of challenge and if you can look past the controls there’s a wonderfully atmospheric and fun game waiting to be played.

Realms of the Haunting is a lengthy FPS and point and click hybrid that will have you fighting enemies with ranged and melee weapons as your progress through the environments but will also pick up items and notes that can be looked at and used to advance to new areas or just to learn more about the plot. You can find hidden areas by interacting with the correct objects, such as hidden passages behind bookshelves or hidden objectives behind pictures. Realms of the Haunting's story is told through full motion video cutscenes and through voiced dialogue during gameplay for story moments and when examining objects in the environment, the voice acting is well done with a nice combination of serious and amusing. For some sections of the game you will have another character with you, not visible or helping you fight, but they will comment on objects and events with you. For the game's time the music, graphics, and sound are all excellent and give the game a great atmosphere, though the old CGI and green screen effects don't look very good. You will travel through increasing outlandish environments compared to the house that you begin in, which helps make the game more unique visually and was a good choice because due to the old graphics normal locations don't look very realistic.

The game has a terrible controls scheme that has you needing to use the mouse and buttons all over the keyboard, but there is a patch that will improve things. The motion bob when moving remains annoying. Enemies have poor AI that sometimes has them ignoring you and that has some of them unable to leave rooms, allowing you to stand outside while shooting them in some areas.

While Realms of the Haunting won't be as impressive now as it once was, it is still worth playing for an entertaining story and with the exception of a lot of mazes and backtracking the gameplay is enjoyable.

I only played this through for the first time in the past week. Here's my take:

Much like the best tasting pizza, Realms of the Haunting is enjoyable, has ample filler (needless backtracking), is hard to handle (cuz grease/controls unchangeable), and is absolutely layered with cheese. Unlike pizza, it could easily last about 20 hours and has high production values (who pays premium for pizza?). A pleasant, intriguing, first-person, narrative, action-adventure, FMV game thingy.

Time to go do Panther stuff.

P.S. Go research "Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of Orpheo's Curse." Realms of the Haunting reminded me of it. It was much shorter, but had the same heart.

Un gioco che mi suscita un sacco di bellissimi ricordi, peccato che non facciano più giochi cosi...mi ha sempre divertito ed è l unico gioco di cui dal 1996 ho conservato i cd originali gelosamente...difatti sono tra i pochi ad avere la versione ITA con dialoghi e tutto...ho anche creato una pach personale in modo da rendere il gioco in inglese scaricato da steam in italiano...

Ну а чё? вполне прикольная игра но управление пихдец кривое.

Вот за что люблю игры тех лет. Легкий налет трэша сейчас воспринимается как глоток свежего воздуха. Судите сами, мы получили известие о смерти отца, приезжаем, встречаемся с его духом, открываем секретные проходы в пещеру, в потусторонние миры и попутно изнитожаем монстров. Играется для такой старой игры на удивление легко (ищите патч для переназначения кнопок на WASD). Ролики интересны, сняты неплохо, единственное, что на современном мониторе мало что можно разобрать ;) В решении некоторых квестов помогло прохождение, но в принципе, подумав час-другой можно было бы и без него обойтись. В общем советую поиграть и пройти до конца - не пожалеете.

This is a good game, like it feels like playing doom while watching a b-horror movie. It's ok but i think i have spent most of my hours trying to find in mazes or trying to figure out what to do. Most of the time i do get stuck because i am totally lost or that there is something i couldn't figure out so i had to use a online guide..

9 hours in and i am at CHAPTER XIII: Sword of the Dragon....this game is long and it gets kinda tiresome just running around pressing stuff in hope that it will work. Some ♥♥♥♥ is just plain retarded.

But if you are into a game not just to shoot at everything, like to think a lot of what to do and remember the map of where you are going next, this is a game for you. Otherwise stay away, ♥♥♥♥....games was not easy back in the day.

But let's look at the game it self. The monsters that you kill look like ♥♥♥♥, but the world and atmosphear is amazing. The mansion and it's layout is great, the maps are great and the story is b but ok. The cutscenes kick ass.

Un vecchio classico degli anni 90, praticamente un'Alone In The Dark (ok, quello è un capolavoro inarrivabile) in prima persona con elementi di avventura grafica.
Occhio: pur esistendo la versione tradotta in italiano (doppiaggio pessimo però) su Steam è disponibile solo in lingua inglese.

Tre consigli:
1) installate la patch (UK to US) che converte il gioco nella versione USA, ci sono più opzioni disponibili e soprattutto una mappatura dei comandi molto più sensata, stile FPS moderno, altrimenti diventate pazzi con i controlli
2) applicate in DOSBOX la risoluzione del vostro monitor (es. fullhd) e attivate lo scaling (ad esempio io uso "advmame3x forced"). Non fa miracoli ma l'aspetto migliora un po', con meno pixel in giro.
3) Fate riferimento a questo sito splendido (https://tales-from-the-tower.fandom.com/wiki/Realms_of_the_Haunting) per informazioni e SOPRATTUTTO per le trascrizioni delle lettere e diari che trovate in giro. Uno dei difetti più grandi del gioco è che vi costringe a leggerli in una finestrella minuscola ed è tutto spixellatissimo, praticamente illeggibile, ma non leggerli vi fa perdere il senso della trama che banalissima non è.

Нечто среднее между System Shock и Strife. Читаем и коллекционируем в инвентаре записки и карты. В инвентаре складируем всякое, что потом нужно будет думать, куда применить. Аналогично упомянутым играм есть бэктрекинг: доступная область постепенно расширяется. В отличие от указанных игр, она не дождалась ремейков и ремастеров. Затерявшийся бриллиантик.

По этой игре есть фанатская вики: Tales from the Tower. Предлагаю оценить по ней ЛОР, но не зачитываться, потому что будут спойлеры-спойлеры.

Не может называться immersive sim, потому что нет разных способов сделать одно и то же. Нет всяких вентиляций и взломов.

Мало патронов. Впрочем, советую поискать чит на кучу патронов, но так как чит это сохранённая игра, то определяться, насколько честно хочется играть, нужно с самого начала. В противном случае драться придётся по такой методе: в игре можно найти несколько разных посохов, которые долго перезаряжаются. Чтоб патроны экономить, придётся из одного посоха пульнуть, из второго, из третьего, и так по кругу. Я первый раз без читов играл. Больше так не хочу.

Хоррора игра как такового не даёт. Самое страшное — это сама собой печатающая машинка в начале игры. Но чего хватает, так это мистики, загадочности, атмосферы. Кроме порталов, в игре есть невозможные здания, как в Duke Nukem 3D. Первая локация, в которой оказался игрок, изнутри гораздо больше, чем снаружи. В доме отца через шкафы и ванные можно верхний этаж обойти по кругу, хотя с лестницы видно, что между комнатами воздух.

В игре упоротое управление. Хотя, конечно, после первого Систем Шока не привыкать. Но многие, я так посмотрел по руководствам и обсуждениям, тоже при помощи DOSBox перенастроили клавиатуру на WASD. Аналогично первому Систем Шоку, курсор мыши водится по экрану, а не вращает голову игрока. Что-то похожее на современное управление можно получить, если зажимать обе кнопки мыши и ходить на перенастроенном WASD.

Игру не следует запускать, не почитав про управление, например, в Manual.pdf в папке игры. Самые главные кнопки это h (помощь) и i (инвентарь). Из инвентаря можно загружаться и сохраняться, читать записки, читать про персонажей.

Режим экрана почему-то не из меню настраивается, как громкость, субтитры и чувствительность мыши, а переключается функциональной клавишей F6, а ещё есть c, v для настройки гаммы.

Я купил Roland Canvas VA, и в этой игре есть поддержка. Однако в Стиме это тоже не выведено удобно. Это надо install запускать. Я выяснил, что можно подредактировать:

Скорее всего, у вас нет Roland Canvas VA, ну и зря. Я как новую сторону старых игр открываю с ним.

В DOSBox ведь обычно IRQ 7, и у меня в настройках dosboxROTH.conf тоже 7. В общем, нужно делать скидку на возраст игры, но если всё превозмочь, это забытый шедевр.

Story und Hintergrundinformationen zu verschiedenen Thema stehen hier im Vordergrund. Dazu noch über 1 Stunde Videozwischenscenen, die das ganze Spiel begleiten. Wenn man bedenkt, das das Spiel schon über 20 JAhre alt ist, kann man über die Grafik hinwegsehen. Es ist immer noch eines meiner Lieblingsspiele, weil es von allen etwas hat. Rätsel lösen, rumballern, sich erschrecken lassen, flüchten und natürlich auch erkunden. Du geginnst in einen verlassen Landhaus und begibst dich auf die Reise, die dich zu andere Schaupläze und mystische Orte bringt. Mach dich bereit für eine Zeitreise, die nicht nur in die Zeit zurück geht, wo Dos und Windows 95 existierten. ;)

One of the reasons I like revisiting games from the 80s and 90s is because there was so much diversity to the experiences being offered. Nowadays, the vast indie gaming scene is left to provide titles that aren’t battle royales and open-world collectathons, but in the earlier days of gaming, even prominent developers were experimenting with the boundaries of the medium. That gave us a healthy crop of full-motion video games in the mid-90s, games that fill me with a comforting nostalgia for the days of developers in ill-fitting costumes emoting in front of chunky pre-rendered backgrounds. Realms of the Haunting hails from such a place, marrying FMV drama to an unexpected mix of FPS action and point-and-click puzzling. If it sounds awkward, that’s because it is, but it also manages to be so dang charming that you can’t help but love its efforts.

Adam Randall has a lot going on in his life right now. His estranged priest father just passed away in a remote British manor, a creepy visitor entrusted him with a box of broken seals, and he keeps dreaming of demons alongside a rather lovely lady. All these ominous portends have led him to the house where his father expired, and where he immediately finds himself sealed inside. It quickly becomes clear that something greater is happening here, with ravenous beasts stalking the halls and portals to fantastic worlds dotted all around. The spirits of the manor are unquiet, your father included, and together they have a tale to tell that will determine the fate of all humanity.

I could go into more detail on the story, because there’s a lot to unpack there, but it’s much more fun to see how this epic sprawls out from the humble haunted house beginnings. The story winds through mythology, history, religion, and its own unique cosmology to spin something that’s honestly a little too ambitious for the scope available. This is a pretty long game, clocking in between 12-15 hours for your first playthrough, and much of the story is found in whole volumes of supplementary reading pulled off of library shelves along the way. As much fun as the FMV sequences are, with some legitimately great performances from some of the actors, they’re not really paced to fill in the story as much as they are there to punctuate the more notable moments.

“A little too ambitious” is probably the best way to describe the game as a whole, especially once you start drilling down on the gameplay. Realms of the Haunting is equal parts first-person shooter and adventure game puzzler, all playing out across a dizzying network of connected, wide-open levels. The manor serves as something of a hub for journeys into catacombs, caverns, and stranger places still. It’s not exactly a small manor, either, and while the scope of the maps is impressive, they can be very confusing to navigate given the now-antiquated graphics and a distinct lack of detail many of the areas have. The worst offenders are easily the mazes, of which there are several, and which all tend to use the same repeating texture for every wall, floor, and ceiling. Fortunately, there are some interesting puzzles to balance out the confused wanderings, and only a few places where you might get hung up figuring out what to do next. Again, for a game of this scope, that’s not bad at all.

The other half of the equation is the first-person shooting, and it’s…well, it exists. Realms is hampered by an extremely outdated keyboard/mouse layout that can be alleviated by editing the game files, but definitely isn’t ideal for shootouts. Your weapons actually follow your on-screen cursor during combat, which means you’re not going to be guiding your view with the mouse and will have to click on foes to fire at them. The arsenal is an eclectic one, starting with a familiar handgun and shotgun and then progressing into a selection of powerful magical devices. These are nice and impactful, but require a long time to recharge, leading to most fights being long strings of cycling through your inventory as weapons power back up. Foes themselves have unique looks but mostly wander around aimlessly and take potshots at you, or try to charge you only to end up stuck in a doorway.

Definitely don’t come for the combat, is what I’m saying here, but do come for the ambitious story and charming puzzling. The developers of Realms of the Haunting tried to cram an audacious amount of content into an engine that doesn’t seem particularly suited to it, and mostly pulled it off. You’re sure to notice some strange pacing and spots where content was clearly cut, but don’t let that distract from the achievements this game managed. I know this isn’t the strongest recommendation in the world, and it shouldn’t be. Realms of the Haunting is a fascinating relic, a cult classic with a lot of heart, but it asks a lot of a modern player to see its sprawling tale to the end. I think it’s definitely worth it, and if you hold any love for strange adventures and FMV, you’ll probably agree.

An amazing blend of point and click adventure with a Resident Evil/DOOM style gameplay system and FMVs. The controls are janky but still playable without re-configuring anything if you don't mind using arrow keys to move. I ran into quite a few segments that really made my head hurt with confusion but after taking a break and coming back it became clear or I found the intended solution. I'm glad this game has little to no hand-holding. This game took me about 15-16 hours to beat and I wish I could do it all again without knowing how to complete it. It's a shame they don't make them like this anymore. This game is priced too low for the content you are getting.

Realms of the Haunting is really good occult horror point and click fps game released in the "Doom clone" transition years, featuring then popular full motion video and adventure game logic with 3D fps game play.
I was really impressed when I played demo version of ROTH back in the late 1990's, but In modern days, the game may feel like a mixed bag (voice acting is average and the controls are pre-WASD).
Personally, I love this game; it is really atmospheric and it screams for full modern remake
