Puzzle Quest 2 is a video game developed by Infinite Interactive for the Nintendo DS, Xbox Live Arcade, iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Microsoft Windows. It was released on June 22, 2010 by D3 Publisher. It is the sequel to Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, and like its predecessor, it combines role-playing with strategy and puzzle elements. It uses a competitive, Bejeweled-style, "match three game" playfield to simulate combat and other activities common to role-playing games.

As of writing this review, this game cannot be purchased aka it is delisted. Judging by the recent released of a remastered version of Puzzle Quest 1, I am guessing they are planning on remastering this game as well.

If you do get a hands on this game, legally or sailing the seven seas, you will discover that this game... is different from Puzzle Quest 1. For starters, Puzzle Quest 1 was mainly played through the world map, while this game is more of a dungeon crawler type of game. You have a single dungeon with several different floors, and while that might seem that the game is shorter than Puzzle Quest 1, it's actually similar in game time. I went through with every quest, going through every floor and it took me about 40 hours.

Now a bit of personal history with this game, I first got this game I think around... 2017... or something. Throughout the years, I played it a bit, but then I would drop it, then return to it, then drop it... The reason why is my biggest criticism of the game: It is quite monotonous and repetitive. Now you would ask "But PQ 1 was also repetitive, what makes this game worse?". Well the answer is simple, Puzzle Quest 1 had a much better progression and writing. While the gameplay was largely the same, it did have some progress, like the map kept opening up the more you progressed. I kind of liked that, but in this game, the map is far less exciting than the first game. You go to a room, in that room there is either a monster, which will take about 5 minutes worth of fighting, there's hidden things like treasure chest or an ambush, or there is a locked door. Pretty much that's about the entire game. Now multiply that by the total number of rooms in this game, and that's basically the game.

Another criticism is this game is just... not that challenging. Puzzle Quest 1 had a lot of challenging fights, especially the sieges (where for some reason, you could besiege and conquer friendly castles), but this game... once you figure out your class and the weapons... all the fights are fought identical. There are only 2 fights in this game that were I would say challenging, but other than that... the game was not that impressive.

Honestly, writing this just confirms to me that the game is... pretty average. It's almost like an android mobile game where you play when you are in a bus or when you are waiting at your doctor's appointment. PQ1 you could argue that it was also like a mobile game, but I had way more fun in that game than in this game.

Honestly, I don't even know if it's even worth remastering. The entire game feels too dull, and the only reason I finished it is because I wanted to put this game to rest and not be one of those: "Oh that game... yeah I never finished it".

So is there something positive about this game? The story? Nah too generic... The gameplay? I mean... for a bejeweled RPG... it's alright I guess. Although like I said, I would have rather played this on the phone.

Honestly, if you played PQ1... I would actually tell you that you can freely skip this game. This game is kind of dull. So I can't really recommend it.

Probably the best version of Puzzle Quest and no longer available anywhere unfortunately. The game played like the first one one, a match 3 game, but instead of traveling on an overworld map this one is an adventure in a town and a dungeon aka Diablo and all the combat is done through match three. You can choose between different classes like Barbarian and Assassin and each one has skills, match enough gems and you could fire off a skill. Hopefully someday this game becomes available again it's too good to just disappear off the planet, another reason why physical media is still important.

love this game, it great for when you are having a break at a public cafe working as it runs on limited internet connection. played it for years and it never gets old. just dont lock your pc when you have it open as it cant seem to deal with you logging bak in without showing a blank screen. will be checking out puzzle quest 3 but i have found that version will not play without a decent internet connection so keep coming back to this version

Cependant, malgré ces points forts, certains choix de game design déçoivent. Les combats sont plus longs qu’avant, ce qui peut ralentir le rythme du jeu, surtout lors des phases d’exploration ou contre des ennemis secondaires.

Autre bémol : le côté aventure et exploration sur la carte du monde, qui donnait une vraie sensation de voyage dans le premier jeu, a été remplacé par une progression plus linéaire et cloisonnée. Ce changement retire une partie du charme et de la liberté qui faisaient la force du premier Puzzle Quest.

Puzzle Quest 2 ist ein Spiel welches ich sowohl auf dem Nintendo DS, auf Android und auch auf Steam mehrfach durchgespielt habe. Leider ist es überall nicht mehr erhältlich, denn sonst hätte ich es mir auch noch für IOS geholt.
Die interessante Mischung aus Match 3 und Rollenspiel fasziniert mich immer wieder aufs Neue und es wird überhaupt nicht langweilig. Dabei ist ein kompletter Durchlauf recht lang. Es gibt auch seitdem kein vergleichbar gutes Spiel dieser Art, welches sich an Einzelspieler richtet,
davor war Puzzle Quest: Galactrix noch sehr gut, allerdings hatte es ein etwas anderes Spielprinzip.

Das „Marvel Puzzle Quest“, welches danach von den Entwicklern stammt, ist wie ich finde ein P2W-Spiel, welches Echtgeldeinsatz braucht und sich hauptsächlich an MP orientiert. Nach der Abspaltung haben einige der Ex-Entwickler das Gems of War herausgebracht. Dass ist zwar ein Spiel in dem man viel Zeit verbringen kann und die Kämpfe recht taktisch ablaufen, aber es erreicht aufgrund eines immensen Grindfaktors und mangelhafter Geschichte nie die Qualität des Puzzle Quest 2, außerdem wird man dort auch oft zu Kasse gebeten.

Wir starten und wählen erstmal aus mehreren Klassen.
Diese entscheidet über die zu erlernenden Fertigkeiten, die wir erlernen können, sobald wir einen bestimmten Level erreichen.
Außerdem wählen wir einen Schwierigkeitsgrad. Dieser kann auch später immer wieder geändert werden. Ich habe dieses Mal das Spiel auf „Schwer“ mit einem Zauberer durchgespielt. Alle anderen Klassen (Barbar, Templer und Schurke) hatte ich zuvor schon auf anderen Geräten durch.
Zusätzlich können entweder zwei Waffen, oder eine Waffe und ein Schild ausgerüstet werden. Einige Waffen und Rüstungen können nur von bestimmten Klassen benutz werden, womit man für jede Klasse die persönlich vorteilhafteste Ausrüstung erst finden muss.

So beginnen wir eine lange Reise, die uns durch viele Ebenen führt und sehr viele Kämpfe ausfechten lässt.
Wir bewegen uns (mit Maus oder Controller) von Raum zu Raum und sehen meist eine der folgenden Aktionen, die Durchgeführt werden können:

- Kämpfe: Die Gegner, die im Raum stehen, müssen meist bekämpft werden. Das ist nicht immer so, wenn man die Maus/den Controller über den Ausgang aus dem Raum bewegt, werden die Felder unter den Gegnern die Pflicht sind, blau statt grün. Im Kampf werden (abwechselnd mit dem Gegner) entweder Schädel für den sofortigen Schaden kombiniert, oder Aktionssteine für Waffenaufladung und die richtige Farbe für eine Fertigkeit gesammelt.
Ab und an fordert uns das Spiel auf, den Raum zu durchsuchen. Dann startet ein Minispiel, bei dem es darum geht, so viele Felder „aufzudecken“, wie vorgegeben. Haben wir dies getan, werden verborgene Sachen, oder Hinterhalte aufgedeckt. Dabei gilt die Besonderheit, das eine Übereinstimmung aus 4 oder mehr gleichen Steinen in einer Linie uns einen Extrazug bescheren, was diese dann besonders wertvoll macht.

- Wenn wir dabei eine Falle entdecken, muss diese entschärft werden, oder sie wird ignoriert/ausgelöst. Beim Entschärfen startet auch ein Minispiel, bei dem es darum geht, von bestimmten Steinen, eine bestimmte Menge zu sammeln, ohne die Totenköpfe auszulösen. Ignoriert man dagegen die Falle, bekommen wir einen dauerhaften Abzug von einer bestimmten Menge Lebensenergie, die nur in der Stadt „Verloren“ (Die Stadt am Anfang) gegen Gold geheilt werden kann.

- Immer wieder im Spiel finden wir Truhen und Goldhaufen. Diese lohnen sich immer, daher wird dann folgendes Minispiel gespielt: Jede Übereinstimmung gibt Gold, aber die richtige Beute gibt es erst bei 4-er und 5-er Kombinationen. Aus diesen Truhen muss auch wieder mindestens eine 3-er Übereinstimmung erzielt werden. Dadurch kann man Ressourcen zum Verbessern der Ausrüstung, oder neue Gegenstände erbeuten. Das klingt schwerer als es ist, in diesem Minispiel gibt es ein stark erhöhtes Kombopotential, wodurch schon mal mit dem richtigen Zug 5-6 Kombos ablaufen können.
- Bei verschlossenen Türen hat man zwei Möglichkeiten: Eintreten, oder Schloss knacken. Beim Schlossknacken muss an bestimmten Stellen eine bestimmte Übereinstimmung erzielt werden. Beim Eintreten müssen durch Übereinstimmung Türsymbole erzeugt werden, die wiederum als Übereinstimmung Schaden an verschossenen Türen verursachen.

- Und letztendlich gibt es noch einige wenige Kampfansagen, bei denen der Kampf nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen gewonnen werden kann.

Das sind viele Aufgaben, Nebenaufgaben und Kämpfe, die erledigt und bestritten werden müssen. Aber es ist mir in den ganzen Jahren nie langweilig geworden und dieses Mal war bestimmt nicht das letzte Mal, wo ich es durchgespielt habe.
Wie erwähnt, ist das Spiel nicht mehr käuflich zu erwerben, was ich sehr schade finde.
Wer es noch in seinem Besitz hat, sollte es unbedingt mal spielen.

Additional notes: Old game, I think it is less well done than the first one yet trying to make more, which is commendable. Mixing an rpg with bejeweled mechanisms sounds cool, but the way they did is a bit heavy, very repetitive, and not very exciting. It is fine, but skippable.

Au final, je m'ennuie dans le jeu.
Je ne l'ai joué qu'en facile, peut-être que ça enlève le piment du jeu ?
Je ne suis pas un spécialiste de ce type de jeu mais j'avais joué à Puzzle Quest 1 du nom et je l'avais trouvé plus intéressant; ce qui m'a fait acheté le 2:

Les +
- des graphismes sympathiques
- une histoire sans prétention mais on s'y laisse entraîner
- un bestiaire original
- des sorts différents qui permettent d'infliger des dégâts, se soigner, paralyser l'adversaire tout en détruisant les "billes" du plateau.

Les -
- pas de possibilités de vraiment faire des combinaisons de sort à enchaîner intéressante car on ne peut en utiliser que 5 différents par combat et souvent il faudrait pouvoir en utiliser plus.
- du coup on n'a pas vraiment l'impression que le personnage devient plus puissant car même s'il gagne de nouveau sort il est toujours limiter à 5 par combat.
- les combats sont alors très longs et en deviennent chiants.
- dommage que lorsqu'on équipe le personnage, le graphisme ne s'adapte pas avec les nouveaux équipements.

C'est juste un aperçu mais cela quelques idées du jeu.

fun puzzle game but drags on for way too long. the puzzle combat is quite fun, especially when you finally create the build that works best fore you. the feedback from matching items on the board is quite satisfying and so is creating synergies between your attacks. several battles are interesting with unique mechanics, but the rest are very simple. the major drawback of this game is that it has way too many enemies, treasure chests, locks, traps and secrets to find. each of these items is a 1-10 minute puzzle combat. and it gets repetitive very fast. you kill enemy after enemy just to "kill" (collect treasure) a treasure chest and then "kill" (bash/pick/dispell) a locked door to move into the next room where you "kill" (search) the room to find secrets and do more of the same. luckily, some of them can be skipped, which I started doing towards the end of the game. This is why I'd advise not to play the "templar" character as you'll struggle to deal damage to the enemy and each battle will drag on even further.
In short, very satisfying combat, boring plot, drags on far too long. my 80 hours of game went into finishing the game once and getting to about the middle with another character. decide for your self.

Und ich muss sagen: Der erste Teil gefiel mir sehr viel besser. Man rennt hier eigentlich nur durch irgendwelche Räume und schnetzelt sich durch Gegner, öffnet Truhen, entschärft Fallen und lernt neue Zauber - und das alles über 3-Gewinnt-Spiele. Was sich in der Theorie ganz nett anhört, entpuppt sich leider als eintöniges Allerlei, das man nach einer Weile einfach nur noch lustlos durchklickt. Nach der Hälfte des Spiels (so mit Level 35) hatte ich bereits zum größten Teil die stärkste Ausrüstung, die man in dem Spiel finden konnte. Das mit Level 50 festgesetzte Maximallevel hatte ich schon erreicht, als ich noch mehrere Stunden vom Finale entfernt war. Die meisten Gegner konnte ich auf dem höchsten Schwierigkeitsgrad mit ein wenig logischem Denken und strategisch sinnvollen Zügen besiegen, ohne auch nur ein Drittel meiner Lebenspunkte zu verlieren. Die einzige Ausnahme war der grüne Drache - der war 'ne erfrischend harte Nuss.

Viele beschweren sich darüber, dass der Computergegner angeblich bevorteilt würde, was die fallende Steine angeht - konnte ich jetzt nicht wirklich beobachten. Alles, was dem Gegner passierte, an Combos usw. konnte genauso gut auch mir passieren. Das, was mich an der KI wirklich gestört hat, war die Vorhersagbarkeit. Egal, welche Zauber der Gegner anwenden kann, er priorisiert immer erst die 4er-Combos, dann Schädel, dann die Fäuste und zum Schluss erste alles Andere, was er so anwenden kann. Auf diese Weise konnte man den Gegner häufig dazu bringen, Züge auszuführen, um sich selbst zu schützen oder um einen Vorteil herauszuholen.

Meine abschließende Bewertung ist ein wenig schwierig. Wenn man das Spiel einfach so nebenher spielt, geht es voll in Ordnung. Ich habe auch nicht stundenlang davor gesessen und einen Gegner nach dem anderen platt gemacht - immer nur ein wenig, bis es wieder zu dröge wurde und dann irgendwann wieder ein wenig usw.
Das heißt, für jemanden, der einfach ein wenig Zeitvertreib braucht, kann sich das Spiel immer wieder mal reinladen.
Ansonsten empfehle ich lieber den ersten Teil - der ist vom Schwierigkeitsgrad enorm härter und fühlt sich vom Aufbau und der Story einfach epischer an.

A fun way to pass the time. Outside of puzzles and a basic story line, there isn't much in the way of progression. Spells and gear seem fairly useless towards end game, but that doesn't really make it a deal breaker. 87 hours on record from start to finish... most of which would be spent tabbed out while working on projects or other tasks and coming back to this on my turns.

Ok but seriously, the game becomes a grind almost instantly. In fact, as soon as you enter the "cave" area, the game starts cheating. I don't care what anyone says, the game cheats for itself. Too many times, after carefully looking at the board and making a selection seeing where things will land, after I move the PC selects something and then gets 4 in a row, 4 in a row, 4 in a row over and over. It's not just frustrating, it's game breaking. It makes the game not fun. Period.

Do NOT buy this game, in fact don't even play it if it's free. It's just a bad game.

A unique and very addictive take on the tried and true dungeon crawling turn based hack and slash fantasy RPG.

It has the main quest, side quests, crafting to upgrade gear, town with shop keepers.

Where it shines though is in using the standard match three game to do everything from combat, searching rooms, bashing or unlocking doors, chests, and traps. Each done in a unique way.

There are the four character archtypes; Barbarian (fighter), Paladin (healer), Assassin (theif), and Sorcerer (mage). Each has their specialities when it comes to mana gems, such as Red (strength) for Barbarian, Yellow (agility) for Assassins, ect. and are used in synergy with other for specialized attacks such as Red/Purple (strenght/willpower) for sheild bashes.

You can set up to five special attacks to carry into battle, each requiring a certain combination and number of gem matches to charge up for use. There's also melee gems (the fist) to collect for main/off hand weapon useage, as well as being able to match skulls for instant attacks.

You can level up your characters to increase your stats for more health, quicker gem power absorption, deadlier melee or insta-attack damage, ect.

They've incorporated a lot of tried and true RPG elements into a match three game and it works flawlessly together, simple, entertaining, and very addictive.

limited classes though
and it can get kind of one note. gameplay/story line is a bit short and you run out of thing to do.

so if you've been through the game with each class, theres not a whole lot of replability.

Bardzo luźna, przyjemna, bajkowa opowieść. W sam raz do popołudniowej kawy, lub zabicia czasu w leniwy dzień. Zróżnicowana ilość wrogów, postaci, kilka poziomów opowieści oraz różnorodność broni i magii głównego bohatera (lub bohaterki) sprawia, że jest to pozycja na grube godziny. Układanie klocków podczas przyjemnej muzyki jest bardzo odprężające. Graficznie nie starzeje się w ogóle, z uwagi na bajkowy klimat. W swojej kategorii minusów brak.
Śmiało polecam.

Gameplay is great- apart from the new addition of shield points that offer a percentage chance of bolcking half of damage taken. It really draws out battles. Art is okay- the character portraits are not very appealing, probably as they are drawn with over-exaggerated proportions similar to the monsters'. The open-world format is confusing and frustrating compared to the easy-to-navigate map of Puzzle Quest: COtW.

Overall, it's an okay game. I recommend Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords over this one, for it's subtle gameplay and art style differences, but if resolution and simplicity are all you care about, this version will do the trick.

Match-three the RPG is back with an overwhelming amount of content. While the core gameplay experience remains unchanged, the quests and things to do overtop that are added feel like pointless busy-work designed to pad the gameplay experience. Still fun to play, but a lot more monotonous than the first.
