Maaaaaaan, I've played Pillars Of Eternity at least twice, but I never beat it. I remember playing this game, and absolutely getting my butt kicked all over the place, and wondering when am I going to actually stand a chance.

I remember making it to the first major Castle, but I only have one other companion who also happened to be a wizard, and I was trying to have him tank, and I was just having a horrible time.

Now 300 hours of Pathfinder later, (I still haven't beat Pathfinder) I have finally returned with a vengeance, with more CRPG knowledge than I had before.

Don't get me wrong, all these games are still hard as hell, but, if you take the time to learn, and put together a proper build, and recruit your companions, you'll have a damn good time.

I also have the second game, but I've never fired it up because I've never beat this one, but every time I play, I get a little farther, and do a little better, and I do plan to beat the game this time around.

Overall, I'm no CRPG aficionado, but I have played probably a few more than the average player, and I would recommend Pillars of Eternity.

"Pillars of Eternity" is a good game with much to recommend it, but it struggles to fully deliver on its own ambitions. (7/10)

The branching dialogue options look impressive on paper but rarely run deep. Most don't elicit a reaction from your companions or the world at large, and many lead nowhere. A few lines of unvoiced dialogue, even from characters who are normally voiced, and then the story resumes as if nothing happened. The choices are there, but they are skin-deep for the most part.

A small but persistent frustration worth mentioning: playing as a female character, you will occasionally be misgendered by the narrative. The default protagonist appears to have been written as male, and the adjustments don't always catch every instance.

The turn-based beta branch is a worthwhile addition and largely functional. I played through the entire game on it and only had to reload due to glitches once or twice. That said, certain interactions weren't fully balanced for turn-based. A Barbarian trait that grants an additional turn on kill, combined with the class's area damage, can chain indefinitely through weaker enemies and trivialize certain encounters. This feels less like a bug and more like an oversight from retrofitting turn-based onto a system never designed for it.

Difficulty is a related issue. On anything above the lower settings, fights become so drawn out that the fun slowly drains out of them. A more granular system allowing you to adjust enemy damage and health independently would have been welcome. The ideal configuration doesn't currently exist in the presets: enemies that feel genuinely dangerous without requiring geological patience to defeat.

The story, like much of Obsidian's work, is genuinely excellent. The world is rich and the companions are well written. The absence of romance options is a real gap, though. Emotional investment in a character becomes easier when that character has something personal at stake in the world around them. It's a limitation that Obsidian addressed in the sequel.

The ending presents meaningful decisions with real weight, but like much of the game, the available options don't always capture the specific position you've arrived at through hours of play. You sometimes find yourself picking the least bad option rather than the right one. Not because the writing is poor, but because the game couldn't anticipate exactly who your character became along the way.

Visually, Pillars of Eternity uses pre-rendered backgrounds to beautiful effect. There's an argument that the older graphical approach has aged better than fully rendered contemporaries. The painterly quality of the environments gives the world a distinctive atmosphere that feels intentional rather than dated.

In the end, I’d say Pillars of Eternity is a genuine Kickstarter success story and I'd recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who goes in with clear expectations. It's not perfect, but the developers did something amazing with a limited budget. (7/10)

I've played Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale before, and tried playing Pathfinder: Kingmaker (and disliked it immensely), so I decided to give this a shot as it was received more favourably and considered a masterpiece. I just don't get it. I can see why people who like cRPGs would like this game, but I'm personally finding it frustrating and boring. Not touching cRPGs again.

Будет ли теперь мир, добро и процветание в мрачном Дирвуде? Ну куда уж там! Обсидианы намеренно оставляют пространство для сомнений. И это прослеживается во всех
квестах в игре. Когда мы решаем мелкие проблемы конкурирующих фракций, погружаемся в варварские обычаи гланфатанцев, исследуем противоречия анимансеров, всегда остается сомнения в правильности совершенных поступков. Игра постоянно рассуждает о греховности человеческой природы и определенной безвыходности из замкнутого круга колеса душ. Какой должен быть мир теперь?
Излечаться ли раны от наследия Вайдвена? И не бросятся ли смертные в объятия каких-то новых бутафорских богов? Однозначно да. И я даже уже набрасываю у себя в голове, примерную проблематику в сюжете сиквела)
Что же в остальном? Несмотря на все противоречия сюжета, мы получили отличное приключение в духе старых ДнД-историй. И не только лишь по миру игры, но и в глубины экзистенциальных сентенций.
Возникает ли ностальгия о временах путешествий по забытым королевствам, недалеко от Врат Балдура? Однозначно да. Вся романтика старых игр не только сохранена, но и приумножена. И чувство некоторой недопиленности игры, с ограниченным бюджетом нисколько этому не мешает. Все же мы живем в те времена, где такие игры не очень уж популярны. Наличие широко детализированной текстовой экспозиции, не для всех украшает такие произведения. Поэтому мы должны ценить сам факт их выхода!

I enjoyed the game. You play the "Watcher" who's past is a secret to the player and drives the plot, The storyline is fun but can be a bit heavy-handed lore-wise and it was sometimes tough for me to grasp what was going on. There are many opaque concepts, racial strife and politics all mixed together (soul-less victims, a bad guy who is hiding the fact there are no Gods) but I guess it came together in the end. The story tries a bit too hard to avoid tropes and sometimes gets muddy as a result. The keep mechanic is a bit clunky but a few upgrades are really excellent (tip: Get Warden's Lodge, which grants bounties for quick adventures with solid loot and experience). The 3d sprites are good and the portrait art is very good, but the character sheet models are oddly amateurish and awkward. The maps are very well done. Spells and skills are mostly hits and a few misses. Mostly, they are well done with traditional cleric, wizard, druid spell lines. The Cipher mind control line of spells are a neat change of pace. Skills and abilities are a fresh take on the genre, pay attention and read everything carefully, it's not D&D! Finally, I thought the player companions were interesting and had good backstories. Companion conversations during the game gives good flavor and keeps the Watcher company while on his or her adventures. To sum up, this a very high quality game in the grand quest, isometric Balder's Gate tradition with a new world and fresh game system. It should earn a deserved spot on your hard drive!

Still one of my favorite games and one I loved enought to buy again on GOG (cuz I wanted to actually own it).

This game is one of those gems that did so many things right. The story and world building were just so fascinating to me, and my biggest gripe (aside from the loading screens) was that I liked all the companions and had truble picking who to take with me. The White March DLC is worth every penny.

I guess this game just really isn't *for me*.

I started over three times. The visuals are very nice. But everything feels so slow. I can't even really say what the problem is, I just can't keep up the motivation.

I thought "maybe this kind of battles just isn't for me", but then Baldur's Gate 3 is similar enough and really awesome.

But yeah, I assume it's just a "me" thing. Sadly my short time also means I can't judge the story fairly. But if I were to go for a game like this, I'd go for Baldur's Gate 3 instead.

Maybe I'll give it another try at some point!

The game is amazing, I loved the CRPG game since the BD2 and Fallout series. Pillars of Eternity, this game let me to reapproach that feeling, too. The context is enormous huge and rich, the narrative story is epic and endlessly memorable. The beginning of the story is way more attractive to me as I escape from the dungeon to face the so wild open and fate. The Philosophical Reflection of contexts is so deep not just the simply to cope with the Theism or Atheism. Every NPC has his or her struggles and turmoils that shape them to be so fresh in real. No words to appreciate the studio brought us so good artwork.

Acabo de terminar mi primera partida luego de más de 110 horas —Steam no cuenta unas cuantas porque jugué sin conexión— y debo decir que después de 5 meses jugando casi a diario en los ratos libres que tenía que este es uno de los mejores juegos de rol que he jugado nunca. El mundo es maravilloso e invita a una curiosidad desenfrenada casi infantil y lo complementa con cuestiones políticas y teológicas extraordinariamente complejas en un universo que propone una fantasía igualmente barroca y llena de detalles que exuda personalidad y creatividad por todas partes y se cimienta en sistemas igualmente barrocos que dan pie a poder interpretar personajes únicos con distintas cosmovisiones y origen, que hace que sea inmensamente reactivo y por ello rejugable.

Me enamoré de los personajes y de los sistemas y del mundo y de las decisiones que puedes tomar en Eoras y lo mejor de todo es que se que me dejé contenido detrás y eso es lo que más me incita a volver —a pesar de 110 horas de campaña, no terminé de explorar Od Nua, prácticamente no toqué las campañas de la Ruta Clacérea, ni seguí las quests de Aloth, Pallegina, la Madre Afligida ni de los compañeros de las expansiones, y ahora quiero ver qué pasaría si hiciera otro personaje y tomado otras decisiones.

Nie siadło mi kompletnie, mimo że bardzo lubię crpg-i. Świat jest niby rozległy, ale nieciekawie przedstawiony i szczerze mówiąc to klisza potyka się w nim o kliszę. Towarzysze niby są ciekawi i oryginalni, ale nic z tego nie wystarczyło, bym któregokolwiek naprawdę polubił. Walka jest okropnie chaotyczna - za każdym razem wszystkie postacie zbijają się w ciasną grupę i nawalają się nawzajem, przez co chyba nigdy nie ma okazji, żeby użyć większości zaklęć bez ranienia sojuszników. A zanim wykminisz jakąś strategię, większość twojej drużyny jest martwa bo tak. Nie wiem, byłem zajarany na tę grę, po czym się okazało, że mnie męczy i muszę się zmuszać do dalszego grania.

I would say I've had a great experience with the game for about 85% of my playthrough, with the exception of a little slump toward the end.
If you've played Tyranny or Baldurs Gate 1/2, you'll immediately feel at home regarding the gameplay, the storytelling (including the scrolling texts at the beginning of each new Act) and the map/world design.
When it comes to the writing, I'd say Pillars of Eternity is on equal footing with Tyranny, but takes longer to get the worldbuilding and characters going. It's also a fair bit slower than that game regarding the combat encounters, but makes up for it by providing a more interesting cast of companions and a better villain.
For me, the game suffered from the fact that it only has a couple of tracks that you'll hear until you start to yearn for something different, only worsened by the fact that the songs there are sound too similar, which feels like a wasted opportunity for me.
This is a relatively minor concern though. Throughout most of my playthrough, I enjoyed the game, especially the way most companions were written and the variety of ways it lets you solve different quests.

Not sure how this game isn't more popular - it's one of the best CRPGs I've ever played.

[h3]WRITING 9/10[/h3]
Of course, Obsidian brings some of the best RPG writing to the table in the world of gaming. This is no exception. The worldbuilding, characters, and storyline are all captivating - with plenty of detail for those who want to delve into the lore, but not too overwhelming for those who want a more straight-forward experience.

As for characters, the companions don't have a million lines of dialogue or expansive side quests to tackle, yet they each feel like multidimensional, nuanced people. I enjoyed watching them evolve across their character arcs, as well as the way each of them offered a window to the cultures and history of Eora.

The only con I will list here is that the specific lingo, place names, cultural references, etc. were a bit overwhelming the first time I played. The game is very upfront with its fantasy terminology - throwing hard-to-pronounce (for an English speaker) terms at you nonstop during the tutorial section - to the point that I had a hard time following what was going on for the first hour or so of gameplay.

[h3]VISUALS 7/10[/h3]
PoE is not a big-budget AAA title. The character models aren't all that impressive by today's standards, the character customization is somewhat limited, and the textures don't always scale up to higher resolutions with the utmost clarity. Despite that, the game is undeniably beautiful. The game boasts some very well-crafted and atmospheric environments, especially places like Twin Elms and Caed Nua. There were times I paused my wandering just to stare at the backdrops and wish I could download it as a wallpaper.

[h3]GAMEPLAY 9/10[/h3]
If you're coming from other series like Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder, etc. getting a hang of the mechanics in PoE isn't too much of a hurdle. However, if this is your first CRPG, you might find it a little overwhelming. It took a bit for it to click for me, but when it did I found myself enjoying it almost as much as (if not more than) other RPG systems. If you need help understanding the mechanics, I recommend checking out Slandered Gaming's 2023 beginner's guide on Youtube - he has some very clear and succinct videos on the topic.

+ Fantastic music (I use the soundtrack for my TTRPG sessions)
+ I like being able to enchant basically any weapon
+ Love that there's a slow mode and a fast mode that can be toggled for quicker running around

- Voice acting is a mixed bag. Some characters have distinctly lower-quality audio than others (Grieving Mother, for example). At the same time, the game has some great performances from industry giants like Matthew Mercer, Sam Riegel, Cindy Robinson, and Liam O'Brien

Отличная партийная РПГ для своего времени, даже сейчас играется достойно. Но то что игра вышла с кикстартера чувствуется в дешивизне. Легендарный разработчик Обсидиан попытался создать новый мир, но лор вышел скудным и не завлекающим. Тем не менее, игра всё равно хорошая и я смело могу рекомендовать его любителям партийных РПГ.

[b] Плюсы: [/b]
• Простая, понятная РПГ в стиле Тирании, NWN2 и упрощённой ДнД с ускоренным режимом, паузами и боем по таймингам, а не пошаговая ересь
• Вариативность прокачки, можете одевать магов в доспехи и давать им двуручные мечи, а танкам посохи
• Можеть быть быстро пройдена за 15-20 часов, либо с полной зачисткой всех квестов, локаций и ДЛС за 60 + часов.
• Отличная оптимизация благодаря Unity, а не UE4 С его богомерзкой вечной загрузкой шейдеров
• Можно очень сильно упростить игру для тех, кто не хочет трудностей - есть даже галочка с подсвечиванием репутации за диалоги
• Функционал развития своей крепости
• Уникальный мир/лор с небольшими твистами.
• Приемлемая графика на момент выхода даже сейчас выглядит достойно.
• Репутация влияет на диалоги. Чем чаще вы показываете честность, злость, великодушие - тем выше ваша репутация в этой сфере, что иногда важно в квестах.

[b] Минусы: [/b]
• Пасфайдинг и АИ туповаты, персонажи вечно застряют друг в друге и препятствиях. Точной настройки поведения ИИ (как в том же ДАО) нет.
• Проблемы с балансом. Игровые локации рассчитаны на 12 уровневого персонажа, но ДЛС добавляют ещё 4 уровня. Тем не менее, 11 уровень можно получить ещё во втором акте, тогда как третий забаланшен под 8 уровень. Перекачанный персонаж давит всё райткликом без навыков и спелов.
• Баланс хозяина. Отдельно выделю, что у хозяина конченый баланс который выглядит как что-то типа "шотает всех у кого меньше 1000 нр". Т.к. нр растёт с ростом уровня, то внезапно либо игрок не докачан и убить может его только абузами, либо перекачан и всегда выживает от этой механики. То есть если на всех локациях есть хоть какая-то преемственность, то хозяин просто живёт своей жизнью.
• Миру не хватает проработки. Хочется видеть больше последствий действий и больше дополнительных ветвей. Сами посудите - вам дают три фракции на выбор, но у каждой из них всего 2 основных квеста. Мало? Мало. Хочется возвращаться в локации где вы уже были и смотреть последствия - но последствий почти нет. Персонажи в локациях - скучные болванчики, которых просто поставили стоять АФК. В этом смысле мне игра очень напомнила Ведьмак 3, когда я привожу к победе Нильфгаард, но после окончания игры - всё равно везде стоят реданские солдаты.
• Лор уникален, но мало интересен. Повествование занудное и неспешное, в нём не хочется разбираться. Не хватает чего-то, чтобы ударяло в мозг неожиданностью, чего-то или крайне увлекательного, или запредельно неестественного/возмутительного. Интересно становится только в самом конце, а в первые 20 часов хочется даже бросить игру.
• ДЛС проработаны чуть лучше основной игры - есть кволити оф лайф шорткаты, небольшие текстовые квесты. Тем не менее, всё ещё далеко от полного удобства.
• Развитие крепости которое является плюсом, всё-таки имеет посредственный функционал. В сравнении, в Тирании чувствуется больше взаимодействия с крепостью и её польза, в Dragon Age Awakening она вплетена в сюжет и тоже есть небольшое развитие. А в NWN2 так наверное вообще эталонный функционал - и куча офигенных квестов связанных с троном, вплетение в сюжет, развитие крепости завязанное не только на деньгах, но и на редких рудах которые можно искать по миру. В общем, тут тоже не дожали.
• Полумёртвая механика стелса, нужна только для обнаружения ловушек и тайников. Но это же делает её душной - всю игру на карачках ползать. Тот кто это придумал - садист. Лучше бы карманные кражи реализовали.
• Что-то с экономикой. По началу денег катастрофически не хватает, хотя игра почти сразу подсовывает артефакты с привязкой души 3 по 10 к, в конце их так много что любой квест проще решать деньгами. При этом за квесты продолжают давать копейки. В игре нет ни одного выбора, в котором имело бы смысл алчно "выбрать деньги".
• Хоть и есть репутация характеристик персонажа (великодушие, честность и т.д.), но внезапно можно всё положительное догнать до максимума. Самая высокая проверка в игре - 4. Значит продолжать выбирать уже прокачанную репутацию смысла и нет, если только вы не ролеплеите. Кроме того, есть репутация городов и фракций. Если с фракциями туда-сюда есть небольшие сюжетные взаиосвязи, то репутация в городах вообще реализована максимально примитивно - вы увидите пару новых диалогов, всплывающих фраз от АФК НПС и с вами кто-то может перестать торговать. Ничего более. Да и в целом, статистики напихано много, а пользы от неё мало.
• Перебор с количеством мобов в ДЛС. Их просто слишком много и убивать их слишком скучно.

• Я уже отметил в минусах, но продублирую - поиск ловушек и скрытых объектов лучше работает в стелсе. Без стелса даже на 12 прокачанная механика может не обнаружить некоторые тайники. Если видите что-то похожее на тайник - быстро перейдите в стелс и обратно, для профилактики.
• Можно конечно много баловаться, но как мне показалось лучшие танки - всё равно воины и попытки родить танка из паладина/монаха/певчего всё равно дадут результат хуже. Вполне спокойно без бафов можно иметь 120-140 отражения.
• Обычно одного танка мало. Я бы рекомендовал делать 1-2 оффтанка. Здесь хорошо зайдут классы, которые могут работать с окружением или дают бафы - тот же певчий, друид, паладин. Им можно воткнуть дешманский щит со старта игры на +5 точности союзникам рядом.
• Почему-то навык призыв огненного меча слишком оп против всех врагов, кто не иммунен к огню. Что-то с балансом спела. Впрочем, дисбаланс монаха всё равно не переплюнуть. Как и в любой около-днд игре, монахи самый дурной класс.
• Союзники по умолчанию плохо прокачаны и их надо перекачивать.
• Внезапно, кастерам не обязательно давать посохи. Отберите у стоика его посох и при первой же возможности дайте аркебузу или что-то стреляющее.

Eora is solidly in my top 3 fantasy settings now, right behind Rivellon (Divinity) and The Old Kingdom (Garth Nix books). I love the characters, the history, the things you uncover about the world through this game - it's all really well thought out and designed. I especially enjoyed the Endless Paths of Od Nua and the White March DLC. As an Aumauan monk I could've done without the fantasy racism but that seems to be baked in to the genre sadly.

There are too many spells in my opinion, I tried my best to read through the cleric and druid spell lists but in the end I really only regularly cast about 1/8th of the spells I had access to. The other 7/8ths basically never got used at all.

Visually this is very much a Unity game from a long time ago. It is frankly incredible that they pulled this off within the engine. I really appreciate this from a technical level, even if some of it doesn't hold up well in the modern era. The environments look really nice though, and I like the visual effects from the spells and loot. At the very least, from the perspective you usually play at, the mid-polygon models don't really affect anything.

The music is nice, but overall sound design is a bit lacking. There are maybe one or two spellcast shouts, which you hear ALL THE TIME from different characters.

I started my playthrough before the turn-based mode was added, and I figured I'd finish how I started on real-time with pause. I highly advise other players *not* to repeat this unless they explicitly enjoy RTWP. It made combat into an uncontrollable mess, as I'm really not the best at extreme micromanaging. I also set additional auto-pauses, like character damaged and attack ineffective. While I was often able to respond to heavy damage because of this, there were many more instances of an auto-pause firing, I set a response, unpause, auto-pause fires again, so I hit space twice to unpause the presumed auto-pause only to end up pausing my own unpause. Not the best. Turn based might be slower, but it is the more reasonable way to play.

I've tried playing through it multiple times.

The combat is repetitive. Character AI feels dated. Characters will have more spells than you care to ever use, and many of them feel too bespoke to ever need. I don't feel invested in the combat. It just feels like a chore, another step to get through to the story.

The storyline at times pulls me in but then I feel like I'm being lectured about histories, nations, deities. I'm a fan of fantasy. Malazan, for example. The world building in this game feels like a lecture, in a bad way. I don't find any of the information helpful, interesting or relevant.

This game will be great for some people. But if you want fun tactical battles, you'll find it lacking. If extensive fantasy histories feel boring, you'll fall asleep. If graphics are important to you, you'll find the character models blurred and dull.

Was probably peak in 2015. But time has moved on.

Highly underrated CRPG, one of the best in the genre, but it requires some patience from the player. It took me a long time to appreciate how good this game is - although I am veteran CRPG player, starting with the Baldur's Gate series back in the day.

I was initially put off by how text heavy the game is - but once you realize that the writing and world-building in this game truly is excellent, it becomes a joy to learn more about your quests, characters, factions and the world you are exploring.

The combat initially also put me off because the visual representation can feel messy - but at some point I realized that the combat system is actually great, and that it is worth putting in some effort to get to grips with it. Once I did that I started enjoying the combat encounters a lot.

So truly a game worth playing and getting to know. 9/10

Pillars of Eternity I is built like a classical isometric RPG with a severe expression. It is obsessed with souls, memory, metaphysics, and inherited catastrophe. The Dyrwood feels wounded from the first hour. The Hollowborn crisis is not just a plot hook; it is social rot made visible. Babies are being born without souls, animancy is feared and politicized, and the whole region feels as though it is walking around with an untreated head wound. That atmosphere is one of the game’s great achievements. It has the old Infinity Engine DNA, but it is not merely nostalgic cosplay. It tries to build a whole metaphysical order and then ask what politics, religion, guilt, and identity would look like inside it.

And Eora is a hell of a setting. Not because it is “epic fantasy” in the default sense, but because it is designed around a few unusually robust ideas. Souls are real. Reincarnation is real. The gods are real in their effects, but not simple in their origins. Animancy is both miracle and scandal. Once the game gets its hooks into those ideas, it can do things a lot of fantasy cannot. It can make theology investigable. It can make identity unstable. It can turn memory into evidence and curse alike. If you like your fantasy with philosophical teeth, this game will be like catnip to you.

Its central narrative is also more coherent than Deadfire’s. You are chasing Thaos, but really you are chasing the architecture of deception itself. The revelation about the gods and the Engwithans is one of the great mic-drop moments in modern fantasy RPG writing, because it is not just a twist. It recontextualizes the moral shape of the world. The game earns that reveal by spending dozens of hours teaching you how much people need meaning, how badly power wants legitimacy, and how fragile truth becomes once it is embedded inside institutions. Obsidian was cooking with promethium there.

The downside is that Pillars I can be hard to love at first. It front-loads lore like an overeager grad student who has trapped you in a hallway. There is a lot of terminology, a lot of soul-science, a lot of proper nouns, and the game occasionally mistakes density for seduction. Some players bounce off because the opening hours feel like being handed a textbook while someone whispers, “No no, keep going, it gets devastating.” They are not wrong. It does get devastating. But the onboarding is rough.

Its combat, too, is good but not glorious. Real-time with pause works, and the underlying systems are thoughtful. One of Pillars’ best design ideas is making every attribute useful to every class in some way, which pushes back against the old dump-stat nonsense. But Pillars I can feel stiff. Builds are less expressive than in II. Some classes sing more than others. Encounter readability is not always ideal. It is a game you can respect before you fully enjoy.

Where Pillars I really wins, besides atmosphere and plot cohesion, is moral seriousness. Not “grimdark,” not juvenile cruelty wearing a skull ring, but real seriousness. It keeps asking what people do when belief fails, when institutions rot, when the truth would destroy order, when suffering is inherited rather than chosen. The best companions are wrapped up in those questions. Durance is probably the standout not because he is likable, but because he is incandescently written. He is spite, faith, shame, and rationalization ground together until sparks come out. Aloth, Eder, Grieving Mother, and the others all fit into the game’s concern with fractured selves and uneasy memory. Even when the companion roster is uneven, it is thematically aligned.

the classes/builds/gameplay made me "nerd out" so to speak for the first time ever. I had played other RPGs before Pillars, but nothing compares to it. In New Vegas you've got Speech checks or maybe some Science/Medicine or whatever, but in this game you have dispositions (based on how you reacted to things throughout the game) as well as simply stat-based checks (perception/intelligence/resolve instead of just speech/medicine). Also, sure the CC is the most important thing to inflict on your enemies, but it's so satisfying to complete your beastiary by fighting monsters and slowly know the resistances each enemy has, and then to use the exact spells/skills that target their weaknesses. It's extremely satisfying and it only gets better once you get a little deeper into it (i'd say maybe past level 3/4)

the companion quests are also believable, and the game's story/plot/world building are insane to me to this day still; the whole thing about souls being manipulated by old gods and how Animancy is basically a science that studies souls and what happens to them, and the entire main plot around the "hollowborn" i.e. children born without a soul and not reacting to anything (basically braindead) felt intricate to me the entire way through

some people might call some of the text word vomit, and I personally skip some of the dialogue, but for example the Grieving Mother questline, which is just reading, got super interesting the more it progressed

Pillars of Eternity to naprawdę wspaniała gra. Taka, przy której siadasz na chwilę, a orientujesz się, że minęły trzy godziny. Świat jest piękny i dopracowany w najmniejszych szczegółach. Lokalizacje są cudowne i malownicze. Każde miasto, ruina czy jaskinia mają swój klimat. Czuć historię, czuć ciężar wydarzeń, które działy się tam wcześniej. Czasem aż chce się zatrzymać i po prostu popatrzeć na tła albo poczytać opisy.

Jeśli chodzi o sam gameplay, nie mam się do czego przyczepić. Walka jest satysfakcjonująca i wymaga myślenia. Trzeba kombinować ze składem drużyny, umiejętnościami i ustawieniem postaci. Rozwój bohatera daje sporo możliwości i faktycznie czuć, że budujemy kogoś po swojemu. Dialogi są rozbudowane, często nie ma prostych odpowiedzi, a świat wydaje się dojrzały i poważny.

I właśnie dlatego trochę boli to, co przeszkadza mi najbardziej.

Mam wrażenie, że jako główna postać tak naprawdę nie mamy większego wpływu na to, co się dzieje. Fabuła toczy się swoim rytmem i często wygląda tak, jakby i bez naszego bohatera wydarzenia potoczyły się bardzo podobnie. Niby podejmujemy decyzje, niby stoimy w centrum wydarzeń, ale rzadko czuję, że coś realnie zmieniłem. Bardziej obserwuję historię niż ją tworzę. A w RPG najbardziej cenię poczucie sprawczości i konsekwencji.

Mimo tego gra wciąga. Klimat, muzyka, świat i postacie rekompensują ten brak wpływu. To tytuł dla osób, które lubią czytać, zagłębiać się w lore i budować drużynę pod siebie. Dla mnie to bardzo mocne doświadczenie, choć z lekkim niedosytem. Bo przy tak świetnie zbudowanym świecie aż chciałoby się mieć wrażenie, że naprawdę zostawiam w nim swój ślad.

The game is not as beautiful as Tiranny, unfortunately, but it is certainly way more enjoyable than Divinity Original Sin. The combat is interesting and complex enough, the story and setting are well made and new. I liked it, even if in the end, I would have liked it to last a bit less (almost 80 hours with White March 1&2).

Based on the achievement percentages for this game, not enough of y'all're actually playing this game. If you have it in your backlog and you enjoy CRPGs, you owe it to yourself to play this. There's a learning curve if you're coming from D&D or Baldur's Gate 3, but I promise you it's worth it to just dig in and see the game unfold.

Also make use of the enchanting system. It will save you money in the long run and it really helps to flesh out your character through how they choose to equip themself.

Pillars of Eternity is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. That being said, I can understand if some don't like it. When they launched the kickstarter for this they described it as the combination of the exploration of Baldur's Gate, the combat complexity of Icewind Dale, and the story of Planescape: Torment.

Pillars relies heavily on nostalgia and I feel like it hampers it in many ways. The sequel is a much better game in pretty much every imaginable way, but this is still worth your time if you enjoy an excellent story, choice and consequence, well-written companions, and a real sense of progression.

Conditional recommend as I think only people already into cRPGs would enjoy this game.

The standard role-playing elements are pretty solid but I found the recruitable characters and plot a bit uninteresting with the main story only becoming intriguing with a last minute reveal near the end of game . Otherwise, developers put obvious effort into making a cohesive fantasy world with fleshed out concepts.

It was my first real experience with this type of games (aside from DOS), and I genuinely enjoyed it. The story was great, the side quests were a lot of fun, and the combat was solid. Sometimes, though, I felt like I didn’t have full control over what was happening on the screen — I definitely prefer turn‑based systems.
My only major issue was the final boss fight. For me, it was far too difficult compared to the rest of the game.

I remember booting this up back in 2015 thinking it would just be a Baldur's Gate clone. It’s not. It’s way more dense and, honestly, way more depressing. This game was the anchor for that whole CRPG revival, and while it's brilliant, it’s also a massive commitment that doesn't care if you have a life outside of the Dyrwood.

[h2]RTWP is a mess, but a beautiful one[/h2]

The combat is "Real-Time with Pause" and it’s a total stat-check. You can’t just "click and win" here. If you don't understand the engagement mechanic—where your characters get stuck in place once an enemy locks onto them—you are going to get wiped in the first few hours. It’s crunchy and rewards people who actually read the combat log to see why their spells are grazing instead of hitting. It feels rewarding to finally win a scrap, but be prepared to reload a lot because you accidentally let a rogue slip past your frontline.

[h2]Durance and the art of being a prick[/h2]

Most RPG companions are there to kiss your ass or provide some light banter. Not here. The writing is top-tier Obsidian, meaning half the people in your party are broken or actively dislike you.

Durance is the standout --> he’s a hateful, philosophical priest who makes you question everything about the world’s lore. Then you've got Edér, who’s just a weary veteran trying to make sense of a war that didn't really solve anything. They don't feel like "party members" as much as they feel like people who are just stuck in the same miserable situation as you.

[h2]The "Hollowborn" concept is genuinely unsettling[/h2]

The world-building isn't just "here are some elves and some gods." The whole plot revolves around children being born without souls. It’s dark and gives the exploration a sense of actual weight that most fantasy games skip over for more "save the world" fluff. The gods in Eora aren't just background fluff either --> they’re central to a mystery that actually pays off in the final act. It’s heavy, philosophical stuff that doesn't give you a "happy" ending just for showing up.

[h2]The stuff that actually sucks[/h2]

Let's talk about the loading screens. Even on an SSD, they start to grate after a while, especially in the bigger cities. And then there are the gold-plated NPCs --> ignore them. They’re just backer rewards with fan-fiction flavor text that has nothing to do with the story. Reading them is a waste of your time and kills the immersion.

Also, the "Wall of Text" is no joke. By Act 2, you’ll be doing more reading than fighting. If you’re tired or just want to turn your brain off, this isn't the game for that night.

Pillars of Eternity is for the player who misses 90s RPGs but wants a story that actually has something to say. It’s a slow, heavy burn that demands your full attention. If you’re willing to put in the work, it’s one of the best experiences in the genre, but it definitely isn't "accessible."
