Old school Ultima that makes more sense. Can't go wrong with the price on this one. A+
It's FREE, yes. I get it. It's fantastic for a free game. But is it worth your time? That's debatable.
I've played a ton of both traditional roguelikes (think Nethack, CDDA, CoQ) and roguelikes (Necrodancer, Binding of Isaac) and Moonring does not really do what it's trying to do very well. Combat is stale, uninteresting. Getting your build going takes a long, long time and revolves around a whole devotion/religious system which is unintuitive at best, and very restricting at worst. For example, you basically get locked out of using swords, axes, and maces if you want to use "the finesse tree". Or you can basically only drink blood (kinda hard to find) as nutrition for another skill tree.
So, effectively, the whole game revolves around restricting yourself to a very specific kind of challenge run/build if you want to experience a decent amount of content that it has to offer. Good game design is ADDITIVE, not subtractive. Moonring does the latter.
Awesome game. I would recommend for people to make and keep a physical notebook to write down all the lore for the best experience. It feels like you are in a quest room
Difficult to pick up and understand at first. At least I was confused as to all these tabs and stats without much information. Not many online tutorials or guides. I still don't know what the bell does other than it went off once and a clone of me appeared and one shot me. It's not hard though, time only moves when you do something and it runs well on lower end computers. Get lost have fun I guess.

This game is awesome
Honestly a cool twist on some of the lower graphically stylized RPGs out there. I think the interaction mechanic with keywords that you are given clues to is cool and is a lot more engaging in its 1-2 word responses compared to the much more common list of responses in many RPGs. I don't think it's necessary to include a tutorial on controls since you can figure most things out pretty easily, but it might have been nice to be run through some of the basics before being tossed into the game.

Not for everyone
Game where you fight evil gods (or submit to them). Beautiful art and OST, very interactive environment, and lots of fun skills and potions to use!! There's also barely any grind needed which is great.
Initial progression is REALLLY slow (cannot be emphasized enough) and you will spend most of your time fleeing from difficult fights to explore and get stronger. There is a lack of yellow tape (no way points and forcing you to explore) which is great, but I think a better in-game notes system (and tutorial on what you can do) is needed. Had to look up some things in later game parts. Also lots of devices and potions but I barely used them until like the end of the game

Very cool! This makes me wistful of a handful of past gameprojects with some mildly similar-ish ideas, haha. The gameplay is fun and the world is really interesting to explore. I also appreciate that this can be approached without permadeath, since the story elements work much better without starting from scratch. My only complaints so far are that the sailing movement (very slow when against wind, normal with in wind's direction, very fast if perpendicular to wind) is neat in concept but frustrating in practice, and that I haven't found a way to "examine" things further away from me (to e.g. get a summary of an enemy).
Not only is this game free but it's also a well made game, if you like dungeon crawling, a challenge and going on a grand quest I heavily recommend this game and if your also a fan of ultima then this game might as well be a blast to the past for you with a more smooth and modern look and feel.

Really unique concept and challenging rpg. Its not my favorite genre but I appreciate what this game is and how its free. There is a ton of time that could be sunk into this. I'm 18 hours in and haven't defeated any of the primary bosses yet, however I've battled against some smaller bosses and discovered a large chunk of the map. My only gripe is with the madness stat, there's a pretty high chance that a creature will spawn when you develop madness that will kill you very quickly. This plus the added occasional confusion effect makes it very frustrating to die to, since you likely will not have the items needed to cure confusion and will continue running into the enemy that can kill you in a few hits. I hope the developer considers lowering the damage output of this creature to give players a chance to react and escape after realizing a head on fight isn't worth it. 8/10
Moonring feels retro with all the challenging features of a great RPG. I just spent 80h crawling dungeons and fetching clues. Gameplay is simple yet demanding. Story is awesome and feels like a great tabletop scenario and graphics are balanced in between readable and immersive (for a pixelart game). It's free FGS : this very tiny team of creators do deserve your try at this, and forseeable support- 'cause if your still reading this, yes, you'll have a blast.

Really enjoyed my time with this game. Progression was solid, felt satisfying to grow stronger with new gear and gifts and it never reached a point where you're too comfortable and can kill everything without paying attention (until I learned the power of spam summoning allies XD). Bosses were a nice puzzle, put a big smile on my face to beat them. Teared up when I got the good end. I eagerly await the sequel :]
Also loved devoting myself to Our Lady of the Sanguine Moon and getting "Yummy!" flavor text every time I drank blood.
Looks great, falls into the trap of being far too hard and aimless - I bounced of Caves of Qud with the same issues.
This is a common problem with these types of games where they all look towards original Zelda instead of the other games that were around at the time. Yes, they were hard, but after waiting 20+ minutes (which as a child felt like days) for a spectrum/c64 game to load they had to have some form of intro so you got a good amount of it.
There's a subset of people that love bashing their heads against this type of thing, but I just find it unfun and therefore boring.
Skald got the balance right this unfortunately did not.

What a great, funny little game.
The atmosphere, the pacing, the design choices (from the neon look to the controls): [b]Moonring[/b] is modern and approachable, but at the same time it keeps a [i]hardcore[/i] faithfulness to the classics of the genre. Not something easy to pull off, and, surprise, this is a [i]free[/i] game (!?!)
A roguelike [i]masterpiece[/i], [b]Moonring[/b] feels like a blend of early-80s [i]Ultima[/i] games with the sharp, minimalist elegance of 2010's [i]Brogue[/i]. Easily one of the best I’ve played in a while.
I adore this game. It has a solid story, engaging combat and even some puzzles.
First time trying it was confusing. I let it marinate for a bit and decided to give it a second try after a while. This time a just went with the flow. I actually read all the texts on the sides and figured out how to move and what do all those different stats mean. I started experimenting when interacting with the world and it was the best thing i could have done. For anyone reading this: just give it a try!
There are multiple mechanics that are kinda unique and i havent seen them used in games much. And i dont just mean the combat style. I really liked that you could actually type whatever when talking to random npcs. Sometimes there would be a hint of words they might react to, sometimes there were not. You just had to try and ask them.
Im also super thankful for the "journal" where you could go through different entries and where all the info you collected thus far would be stored. Like not only are there random books from dungeons, different hints and important info you got from conversations. There is even the simple stuff you would expect from a tutorial. If you forget what the ♥♥♥♥ torpor does, no problem, just find the entry in the book and youre all set!
The artstyle is great, the music is great and everything just works together very well. And its free too?? If i was born again and Moonring wasnt free anymore I would buy it just to experience it for the first time all over again.

Good free game except for the fact that each time you attempt a relic dungeon and you die, you have to start all over again. This is close to 2 hours down the drain. Having a way to save at least before the boss would have been appreciated. Dark Souls is not even close to how brutal this is.

Moonring has a tastefully beautiful and old-school art style fused into an RPG that has a 'I have played this before and loved it' vibe. It reminds me most of Dragon Warrior (U.S. release of Dragon Quest) and has a wonderful amount of feeling and depth.

As a love letter to the Ultima series, I knew from the start that Moonring would be something I'd very much enjoy. It did not disappoint.
The sense of joy in discovery, exploration, and putting the pieces of disparate clues together defines Ultima in great part, and it's all here in spades. Modern QoL features like automated note-taking, mapping, fast paced bump combat, and a text parser with auto-complete and word memory are not unwelcome and make the experience smoother without completely holding your hand. In fact, these features may just take the edge off for people stepping into this sort of experience for the first time. Further, Moonring sets itself apart from its forebears with an unique progression system based around devotional feats to the various in-game gods.
The hand-crafted elements on display here are fantastic, but I'm less enthused about the procedurally generated components. A good portion of your game time will be spent in the many dungeons and ruins that populate the world of Caldera. Once you've seen a couple of these, you've essentially seen them all. The random nature of the dungeons deprive them of any real identity beyond the different creatures that populate them, and the exploration process quickly becomes a formulaic matter of matching X key with Y chest. Considering the game was developed by a single developer and released for free, I understand if certain shortcuts had to be made. Yet the rationale here seems to be replayability, which doesn't jive with the hand-crafted overworld and clues that lend themselves to a strong one-time experience.
Even with the lackluster dungeons in mind, Moonring is a triumph. The core of the experience is gripping and well thought-out, complimented by a strong sense of style, world building, and a charming dungeon synth score. A reasonable runtime and a price tag of zero make this an easy recommend for both veterans and newcomers. I can only hope that in the incoming sequel and beyond, Fluttermind leans further into the strengths here and either sharpens their proc-gen toolset, or uses less of it overall.

the worst sin it has committed is "not give any incentive for the player to explore or experiment." There is no driving force to explore (Hero's call) and experimenting is punished by means of information scarcity, DESPITE ALL THE UI CLUTTER IN YOUR INVENTORY!
- limited-use items are not specified (sparkstone being single-use doesn't have it in its description or UI / wands are limited-use but not specified in shop)
- be consistent on your UI labels
- enemies can escape (drunkard puzzle)
- why, there's no "levelling," why can they escape the boundaries of the level if a player is kiting them to death at effectively level 1
- demand doesn't seem to scale with town affinity for certain items (perfect opportunity for world-building that allows players to reliably check certain cities for discounts, absolutely missed)
- nitpick, but this could go a long way as a QoL tool for players hoping to change up their gameplay
- cluttered UI (LOADS of unnecessary information when viewing inventory, dev definitely hates negative space or doesn't know how to use it)
- weapons should keep to melee/ranged, armor should keep to defense. any bonuses should be written in the descriptions.
- making more room in the UI allows players to see what their current equipment is for better comparison. See Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. The fact that I'm bringing up a DS game against this very-clearly-inspired-by-NES-Legend-of-Zelda game, shows that this game has fallen behind on a lot of QoL.
Do not play. it has the makings of a good game, but has the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of I wanna be the Guy

Decent game but not particularly fun to play and nothing at all like the Ultima series like it's creator claims.
Serious review after 75 hours of game play. Overall, a wholly awesome experience. I don't think I've ever played a game where I was so effortlessly guided to use and appreciate nearly EVERY game mechanic, item type, weapon type, magic system, etc.
With only one exception (I'll get to it later), I challenged myself to play through the whole game without referencing any guides or walkthroughs, and while the game doesn't hold your hand on many things, I was able to piece together what needed to be done for the secret ending and a 100% playthrough. Not a brag, but a complement on the game design.
It's not perfect though. Complaining about a free game seems petty, but nevertheless some (hopefully) constructive criticism:
1) While the debuff potions and devices are rewarding, where they would be most useful is very limited; relic guardians, other major bosses, and even some higher tier normal enemies seemed to be immune or highly resistant to EVERY status effect with very few exceptions. I found myself hoarding these not because of "gear fear" but because they were literally not useful where I felt they were actually needed.
2) Enemy AI is extremely efficient and deadly (nice), but sellsword AI is brain dead. Allies would commonly just wander aimlessly in spike trap rooms and die while exploring dungeons. With no option to command allies, that mechanic seemed unfinished and sloppy.
3) Unless I'm missing something, the "Spell" casting mechanic being tied to randomized dungeon finds seems like a missed opportunity. I don't think I was ever able to complete a single spell after 75 hours of gameplay. It's cool that it's kind of a hidden mechanic, but I think for it to work, the odds of finding components should be able to be increased somehow once the player has figured out the system.
4) The secret ending battle is unsatisfying... [spoiler]The multi-story wave dungeon is awesome and a finely crafted, challenging but fair experience. In the actual "tether" boss room it's fantastic that the shout mechanic is used in a unique way. But that's where the praise ends. The remainder of the fight is an anti-fun chore. The fact that the boss can remove all poise, and one-shot you one or two turns is ridiculous alone, but the fact that ALL status effects build up continuously is just lazy design. No way to directly combat it, no way to avoid it, just a potion chugging, RNG gamble [/spoiler] This is the only place I actually looked up walkthroughs to see if i was missing something important. [spoiler] Nope, it's just Moonring's Bed of Chaos. Awesome. And I'm still confused why some of the gates between the rooms lock and refuse to let me pass sometimes. The whole final boss experience seems to be a broken mess.[/spoiler] What should have been a climactic conclusion to a serious time investment in an otherwise fantastic game ended up a frustrating chore that I was glad to be done with.
I might not be in the target audiance for this kind of game so that could bias my review. I like the ultima IV esthetics and I like the open world aspect of the game. Unfortunately, this game is so hard and punishing that I cannot actually enjoy the game. I was expecting a more modern ultima IV game, but that is really not the case.
Also, even if the graphics are nice, they are very colourful and buzy, as a colorblind person, that makes it a bit hard to get a glymps of what is going on. I can see all colors, but some people with more severe color blindness issues could have an hard time with the game.
You actually CAN use a controller.
I think Moonring is very fun if you are not afraid to mess around. If you play it too safe and never pick locks because you don’t want to lose reputation or never choose a god because you’re worried about permanently being locked out of all the other gods, then it feels like you’re playing it wrong and it is painful to make progress. I wish this was telegraphed more. But other than that, Moonring is a very fun game.

Great game, esp seeing as how it's free you literally can't be that! Super generous of the dev and for such a deep and challenging game too!
PRO TIP: Kite enemies and treat the game as what it is - a turn-based action-rpg similar to 'Crypt of the Necrodancer". You literally cannot brute force this game in combat - you HAVE to play it STUPIDLY TACTICALLY or you WILL DIE. A CRAP TON. It's EXTREMELY Rogue-like in that sense, but actually Rogue LITE in the sense that you keep items you pick up (as far as I've noticed - I might be wrong). You don't lose all your progress and simply revive at the last "town/point of interest" you entered/exited before dying (which sucks if it is far away from where you walked to). Overall the game is great, the lore is interesting even if it barely makes sense so far (I'm not very long into the game I think), it LOOKS and SOUNDS great, gives off super Zork "text based atari/commodore/DOS games" vibes but with visual elements... I can't say enough good thing about it and im only 11 hours in.

I don't know how to start. First of all my soul can't believe this is a freebie. My first try was for about 20 minutes and the game seemed to be really punishing so I left. Now I have put 50+ hours into this beauty and can't put it down. I play a lot of COQ so the transition wasn't that hard. The game has a decent amount of lore compared to other similar titles. Graphics are beautiful and gameplay fluid. Bought the DLC just to acknowledge the DEVS that this is a really good game. I will put my money if a sequel is made. WE NEED MORE MOONRING.
Eu acabei de finalizar minha primeira RUN. Explorei todo o mapa, derrotei todas as dungeons e escolhi o final que mais me agradava. Sendo bem sincero, desde o momento que abri o jogo eu só me senti entediado uma vez ou outra por ser péssimo em estratégia e precisar refazer a mesma dungeon ou por ser ganacioso e querer ter tudo ao mesmo tempo.
Moonring é um ótimo jogo, [b] ÓTIMO [/b], e não consigo descrever como abaixo disso. A Lore é cativante e totalmente necessária para completar o jogo. O mapa é bem grande, ainda mais quando se considera cada ponto do mapa, o que é bem impressionante. E o bom é que existem formas de viajar de um extremo ao outro de maneira mais tranquila.
Os inimigos são realmente bem feitos, cada tipo bem definido e fácil de entender, deixando a experiência bem dinâmica já que por um lado você está fazendo o máximo o possível para não trombar com uns magos enquanto quer muito ter um encontro com um bandido para encher ele de porrada até ele sair correndo (sim, eles correm de você). E você consegue ver a sua linha de evolução no jogo com esses encontros, já que inimigos que costumavam te humilhar no início do jogo não se tornam tão desafiadores, mas ainda sim perigosos dependendo do seu estilo de jogo.
Esse jogo possui vários sistemas comuns mas incríveis: Fome, Energia, Proteção, Loucura, Habilidades dos Deuses... E como o jogo está gratuito agora, eu prefiro que você entre em pânico ao entrar na Amber ou cometa um pecado contra um Deus ao invés de ler por aqui.
Você pode personalizar a sua classe como quiser dentro dos parâmetros do jogo: adagas, armas grandes, magias, armadilhas e etc.. [spoiler] Entretanto, a arma principal do jogador sempre será a melee, sendo apenas barato usar outros tipos de arma a partir do Mid-Game, quando você já percebe que a quantidade de recursos adquiridos está aumentando. Mas realmente, cada hora jogada valeu a pena nesse jogo. Depois de dar um descanso (50 horas é muito tempo) eu com certeza vou refazer minha Run, jogar outro caminho, ver outras possibilidades [spoiler] (e quem sabe matar todos os cidadãos de todas as cidades...) [/spoiler]. Um dos melhores jogos que eu já joguei e o criador deve ser parabenizado.

Ótimo jogo, história incrível, gráfico muito legal, personagens e npcs interessantes e engraçados, É DE GRAÇA, sinceramente, um roubo.
What a great FREE game, its quite different from what is popular now but still creative and challenging for its kind (it also allows cheats if you get stuck like me). The gameplay and map has more variety than I expected (but sometimes can be repetitive but RPGs do grind you anyway) and story/mystery/secrets are cool but you must be patient to uncover it. HONK!
This is a fantastic game at any price and a glimpse into the mind of a game design master. Every piece feeds into every other piece, offering guidance so subtly you never notice it.
For instance, to increase in power, you need to fufill god's quests. It just so happens that the quests each take you to different locations and teach you different aspects of the game, and are necissary towards fufilling an overarching prophesy. And the game never tells you any of this, but you do it anyway, because the correct way to play is to have fun experimenting and exploring.
EDIT 40 HOURS IN: Fantastic game, can't believe it's free. I stand by the inventory management issue below (I'd love to have some kind of 'sort' option), but genuinely have no complaints otherwise.
As someone who's never really played roguelikes, this game is pretty good. Great aesthetic and snappy gameplay. My only gripes atm are:
- not being able to rebind hotkeys
- I think consumables like bandages should be grouped together with potions instead of being labeled "tools".
Things might change as I keep playing. Loving it so far though.

After about 25-30 hours, it's time to never play this again.
World building was absolutely insane, story was really focused while also allowing the player to explore and uncover secrets as they go. I'm sure there's lots that I missed, but there's also lots that I'm glad I sought out.
I really enjoyed my time with moonring, and though I don't have much interest in a 100 floor megadungeon, I will be buying it at some point, because it is insane that this beautiful work of art is free.
Big recommend.

Très bon jeu dans l'esprit d'Ultima. L'ambiance est parfaite, le monde est intéressant et la musique est très bonne. Je vous recommande de donner un peu de temps au jeu pour vous l'apprivoiser. Il en vault la peine.
I grew up playing the Ultima games. They're a huge reason I became a fan of RPGs in the first place. Ever since then I've been looking for a game that fills that same void. Along comes Moonring. The game is free to download. This game is a love letter to Ultima, to older RPGs. It's easy to pick up and play and there's so much to discover here. I had fun exploring the world, getting a ship, and just filling in the rest of the overworld map, to see how huge the game's world really is. Then there's the DLC dungeon which I've found but haven't even attempted yet. This game plays great on SteamDeck. You've got nothing to lose here, it's a free game and there's a lot of fun to be had here if you enjoy old school RPGs. Give this game a try.

Incredible stuff
Not a game for me, too complex and confusing, even for someone used to classic RPG's. And I don't like the graphics either. But I know some people will love this.
Nostalgic, retro fun
Really interesting retro-style RPG with modern QOL improvements and influence from classic roguelikes. if any of that is even a little bit your thing you should really check it out, it's insane that this game is free, the definition of a hidden gem.
The way you level up stats is really cool (each is tied to a god and if you do things they approve of you get points to spend in their associated stat) and worldbuilding so far has been very fresh and fascinating, and it's doled out in a way I quite enjoy. Seriously, give this game a shot.

Pretty cool game, it's interesting how all the around the gods work like only leveling up stats when doing feats for them and interesting that they all have unique boons and drawbacks though I feel one of them is better than the others. Combat is fun and often forces you to really think on what to do for every single step.

I spent three or four days without really feeling like playing anything; I just wasn't "inspired". Then I told myself: "Let's try Moonring, it's free anyway".
Two hours in and I'm having a blast. It brought back that feeling of wanting to spend four or five hours a day on a game (sadly I'm too tired to actually do that XD). I'm going to buy the DLC just to support the author. He deserves way more than that.
Im having lots of fun. Its keeping me engaged. Only complaint is there is very limited character progression reward, and what little there is, its very sloooow to achieve,

Playing this brings back many memories of playing the early Ultima games, but with the depth of a modern game. A fun time all around.
Moonring is an expansive, retro love-letter that will impress fans or newcomers to this genre of game. The music, aesthetics, and multi-faceted gameplay intrigue and wow from the beginning. Learning the economy of combat and trading will take experimentation, but the charm of bending these systems over your knee cannot be exaggerated; as the world map expands with your familiarity of the gameplay and story, you'll see how so many could spend dozens of hours in Moonring.
Pro-tip: visit towns and perform tasks for the gods as soon as you can.

It’s hard to believe that an 8-bit, old-school, conversational dungeon-crawling RPG can be so atmospheric and captivating — and even more astonishing that it’s free.
If there is a reward for labour of love/stubbornness, this game deserves it.

Well built environments, filled with quirky character that communicate through an innovative system.

A really good game
I really enjoyed this love letter to the old Ultima series. We're really in a golden age of 80s style tile based RPGs but with modern quality of life upgrades.
I really like the game's aesthetics; it reminds me of old 8-bit games. The gameplay is enjoyable, fairly smooth, and keeps you playing for a long time.
