The Game That Made Me Fall in Love With Grand Strategy
After 100% completing Medieval: Total War, I can confidently say this game is something special. It takes everything great about Shogun and expands it into a massive, living medieval world filled with crusades, betrayals, plagues, and legendary battles.
The campaign is where this game truly shines. Managing your kingdom across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East feels weighty and immersive. Religion actually matters. The Pope can turn on you. Crusades can reshape your entire strategy. Assassins, spies, marriages, heirs — it all blends together into this incredibly organic medieval sandbox. Every campaign felt different, and going for full completion never felt like a grind — it felt like a story unfolding.
Battles are slower and more deliberate than modern entries, and that’s a huge strength. Watching lines of spearmen brace against cavalry charges, hearing the clash of knights and infantry, and seeing morale shifts ripple across the battlefield is still incredibly satisfying. Victory feels earned, not handed to you.
And then there’s Medieval: Total War - Viking Invasion. The Viking campaign adds an entirely different tone — brutal, raw, and survival-focused. The map is tighter, the factions feel unique, and the atmosphere is intense. 100%ing both the main game and Viking Invasion felt like completing two distinct but equally rewarding strategy journeys.
What really stands out is the atmosphere. The music, the parchment-style UI, the faction briefings — it all creates this grounded medieval immersion that newer games sometimes struggle to replicate. It feels historical, dramatic, and personal at the same time.
Even today, it holds up because of its design. It doesn’t rely on flashy visuals — it relies on mechanics, depth, and tension.
100% completed. Fully conquered. Absolute classic.

The game is old school but fun to play if you can get all the patches you need. the common problem is the game crashes after a couple of moves and trying to find the patch is not easy.

Best Game of all time
Still a classic. Have played this since 2003, and most TW things that came after it. The later releases just don't have the quirky charm of the old school RISK style campaign map. The graphics are definitely dated, and the battle performance on huge unit numbers is still attrocious, but it still feels like the most balanced of the games in the series. This may be more my nostalgia talking than anything else, but I just can't get enough of it.
The main downside to the Steam version, as that you can't load any of the classic community Mods (Total War XL is a must for the best experience). Hopefully the steam community can try and bring it back to here.
Edit: Found a pinned post on the steam community hub discussion page, with fully working links to all of the main mods for MTW1! This removes my only gripe about the game on here, but I'll leave this up for anyone else who isn't aware
You will want to change your screen resolution before playing or it may start crashing on you without saving your progress.
decided to gamble with this purchase since it was on sale for few dollars, knowing the game might not work on modern hardware, however, i got lucky enough to pass through intro (which i couldnt get through in unofficial releases out there ifykwim since the game was that old & might've not worked) & only had to change resolutions in game options to a native one (1080p) to stop the crash mid game

I went through the tutorials a couple of times, and then felt comfortable playing all aspects of the game.

Total Was Shogun had already been based, Medieval is just bigger and better in almost every aspect (especially sieges!). However, there is a lot of negative comments due to crashes - they do happen, most of them could be bypassed by playing with resolution at least in my experience, just keep that in mind.
Graphics are a bit dated, but the gameplay holds up very well after over 20 years. Classic Total War vibes.

This is nice sequal for early-total war-saga lovers. except it crashes in later period of playing. could never finish the game. it is kind of irritating to pay bugged software.

Total War: Medieval I is a game that has aged very poorly, and there’s no point in denying it. The graphics, interface, and controls feel very clunky by today’s standards, even for long-time fans of the series.
That said, the game still has some surprising details, especially in the battles. For its time, unit behavior, formations, and the sense of scale were very well done, and you can still see ideas that later became core elements of the Total War series.
In the campaign mode, despite its many limitations, some factions and starting situations can still be interesting. With a bit of patience, you can experience unusual conflicts and strategic moments that keep things engaging for a while.
It’s not recommended for new players or for those looking for modern comfort, but as a historical piece of the franchise and the genre, it still has some value. Very outdated, yes, but with ideas that laid the groundwork for what came next.

Medieval: Total War is one of those strategic game, where the aim is to conquer the world. It has the dated charm of the 00's and lacks the impressive graphics of later Total War games, but it is my contention that this game is a great one in its own right.
One might think that the only reason to get the game is for nostalgia's sake. And there is no denying that a significant percentage of the purchases will probably come from old players. The advantage of this copy compared to the old one that you might still own is that it is now compatible with modern operating systems (I personally tested Windows 7 and 10). Moreover, the price tag is quite reasonable.
The game is 13 years old and the graphics are no longer up to today's standards. They still have a certain charm to them and it does not prevent having fun at all. In addition, the game offers 4 different campaigns - 3 European ones, set at different starting dates and a viking campaign set in the British Isles, which allows considerable replayability.
However, the game is much more than just a means to satiate your nostalgia, which is why I spent hundreds of hours playing it in the first place, more than ten years ago. The game is different from all Total War games that would follow (only bearing resemblance to its predecessor Shogun), mainly regarding the campaign map. It uses a Risk-like campaign map, which means that movement is much more restrained. This allows for totally different campaign dynamics and really gives a fresh feel to the campaign, at least for Total War veterans who are not used to this campaign-style. One of the main advantages of this system is that it is much simpler and the AI can therefore cope with it significantly better than with the totally open campaign of later iterations. This makes the campaign both fun and challenging, as defeat becomes a very real possibility.
I spent countless amount of time in this game as a kid. This game is the first thing that comes to my mind when someone talks about Total War. I don't think it can catch someone's attention after the modern TW titles. However this game is 100% playable still, it has much clearer gameplay rules and easy-to-read map.

Olha só, eu recomendo por nostalgia e por ser o melhor do conceito original, tipo um jogo de tabuleiro. Rome 1 pra frente ficou mais moderno (e pra mim, de Rome 1 até Shogun 2 é o puro ouro da série). Mas esse jogo tá muito datado e com muitos bugs, principalmente em PCs modernos. Consegui zerar o Shogun 1 novamente ontem (mesma engine, versão anterior), mas o Medieval 1 crasha toda hora. Infelizmente tá injogável.
I heard of crashes being a common issue but I don't have that. Instead I have a severe mouse glitch that makes battles completely unplayable. Otherwise the mouse works just fine on selection screens and the campaign map. If there is any compatibility mod I can get to fix this I would like to know. I played this game as a kid.

I love this game and have played it for hundreds of hours when I was younger. The game isn't ported correctly to play on windows 11. Don't waste your time as you cannot finish a full game

By today's standards Shogun still largely holds up - it's a well made game with laser focus and smart design choices to create a sense of believability without too much tedium
Medieval, on the other hand, turns into a massive slog as you conquer more than 60% of the map. Constant uprisings from hard to understand loyalty dives means you have to micromanage troops and construction in the center of your empire instead of directing your attention to your borders, and eventually the golden horde shows up with super-armies of cavalry that feel wildly unbalanced. This all does create some feelings of historical accuracy, but it's too much to manage and respond to without feeling very tedious. I love the ambition, but by modern standards this one is really hard to go back to.
Also - had to use DXWnd and play in a small window in the middle of my screen to get functional performance. Would be nice if they'd fix that (which is also why I only have 30 minutes of playtime, all of my time was spent running the exe from DXWnd).

Medieval 1 is a really under apreciated gem in the total war series.
The battles are at least in some regard mechanically stronger than even in the best games of the series (medieval 2 and rome 1). Morale, terrain, stamina and unit experience are all extremely important, more so than in later titles. The battle maps are quite good, being realistic whilst giving enough opportunities for tactical advantage. And lastly the battle AI is probably the best I've seen in total war period. The AI will hold its line, it will flank you, it will try rear charges with its cavalry, it will try and avoid unfavorable matchups.
The campaign is a lot more primitive as in later titles however. There are no politics beyond alliances, peace and war. There are also no deals you can do. However the moving of units around the campaignmap like chess pieces is really satisfying.
The only big downside to this game are the controls. The camera controls are akward but manageble. The real problem is the fact that you use the left mouse button for both selecting units and attacking / placing units, causing you to constantly make orders you didn't mean to. It is almost a gamebreaker.... - almost.
I really wish there was a remaster of this game.

Medieval Total War is a good game. It's a blast of nostalgia for me, I enjoyed it as a kid, and I had three very enjoyable hours playing it and reliving the grand strategy of the campaign.
Unfortunately, three enjoyable hours is all I get, as the game now crashes when I press End Turn. For the two dollars I spent, I can't be too upset with how it all turned out, but it's a shame nonetheless.

A 2 euros en promotion, je me suis laissé tenter.
Plein de crash : au lancement du jeu, il faut bien penser à désactiver l'overlay steam et également parfois pendant le calcul de fin de tour obligeant à faire des sauvegardes régulières mais sinon le jeu reste toujours aussi prenant même si il faut bien se rendre compte que l'IA est très souvent au fraise par rapport au version plus récente.

Z tą serią jestem od samego początku, ale to właśnie Medieval: Total War sprawił, że gram w niego (z małymi przerwami) od 23 lat! Może grafika nie odpowiada dzisiejszym standardom, a sterowanie jest toporne (na mapie bitewnej niemal wszystko robimy lewym guzikiem myszy...), to jednak ta gra ma w sobie to coś. Przestawianie oddziałów na mapie strategicznej za pomocą pionków, przywodzi na myśl planowanie kolejnych posunięć w szachach. Polecam!
I have tried many ways to make this game run, but after download it is running, although, sometimes its just thinks 1 and quits...occasionally i believe something triggers it, some historical happening or similar. I love this game and it feels sad that i cannot play it from start till end...

Great Game and fixed the crashing issues
By far my favourite Total War game. Much prefer the board game aesthetic and moving from one region to another in one turn. Just found out about GA after 23 years of playing this game and cannot believe I didn't know it was there this whole time!
