You get this older version for buying the remaster.

Functionally similar games, the remaster has more animations, more achievements and an endless mode. The only real reason to play this older one is for achievements as both games count individually for completion.

As for a review, I'd say the same thing about both versions:

A novelty word game that plays out in short puzzles with a dungeon theme. Useful as a short time waster, but also highly repetitive. Fills the same niche as simple games like solitaire; just, with word puzzles instead of card patterns.

O foco aqui é puramente no vocabulário e na agilidade mental, misturando a mecânica de formação de palavras com a estrutura de um RPG de combate por turnos, ao contrário de jogos de grafia casuais. Apesar da premissa educativa, creio que os entusiastas de jogos de estratégia e puzzles vão encontrar um desafio surpreendente ao tentar derrotar monstros usando apenas as letras disponíveis no tabuleiro.

Eu disse que o foco é o vocabulário, mas há uma estratégia tática profunda envolvida no gerenciamento das letras e dos efeitos especiais. No papel do simpático ceifador Grimm, você não está apenas escrevendo qualquer palavra; você precisa observar as letras especiais que surgem, como as de cristal (que dão bônus) ou as de veneno (que te punem se não forem usadas). O jogador pode optar por palavras curtas para despachar inimigos fracos rapidamente ou poupar letras raras para formar um termo complexo que cause um dano massivo. Não fique com preguiça de repetir fases para acumular gemas e melhorar suas estatísticas; foque na sinergia entre suas cartas de habilidade. Você não precisará apenas de rapidez nos dedos, mas antes é preciso ter um vocabulário afiado e uma mente estratégica para soletrar o caminho até a vitória.

my absolute favorite word game. it's like bookworm adventures but better because it has a built-in dictionary. and also because you can still buy this one. there's a demo to try as well. some levels seem tough or impossible at first, those are best tackled later, with more upgrades.

it's worth noting (even though it's right next to the add to cart button) that buying the game gets you both the original and the remaster (hence my copy-paste review for both versions). not much point in playing the original now, even if there's nothing particularly wrong with it, but I loved it so much that I completed both and I rarely replay anything, and won't touch a remaster if I already played the original. the remaster has a different soundtrack but listening to the original is also an option, they're both excellent.

Cute and fun game in my opinion. Quick little brain exercise in a video game. Can be easy but also challenging at times depending on how creative you want the words to be. A game that is easy to jump on and jump off so if you are looking for a quick fix for a game but do not have a lot of time to be on a game.

Даются некоторые наборы букв и из них нужно составить слова для продвижения. Если слов не знаешь, то не продвинешься. Лучше бы эта игра была про русские слова. В английском тут только маленькие слова вспоминаются. А это очень муторно. Враги становятся жирнее и уже ковырять их приходится, напрягая память на слова. Можно конечно пользоваться сервисами и предлагать тамошнему боту составлять слова из имеющихся, но это не интересно...

不行这个游戏实在是不适合非母语人士。刚开始的确是激动人心，但越玩越觉得卡手，经常性出现“就差那么一个字母”的情况。我觉得这都是因为该游戏没有采取保底机制，字母是完全随机给出的，所以没法保证能拼出你所熟知的长单词。
字母看多了也会眼花缭乱，玩了一小会儿脑子就累得不行。

[u]Recommendation[/u]: A fun word game that combines elements of Boggle, Scrabble, and CRPGs.

[u]Critique[/u]: Letter Quest plays like Boggle: you are presented a bunch of random letters, and you have to use them to form English words. Unlike Boggle (or most word games based on it, like Bookworm), you do not have to form words using adjacent letters. You can type the letters on your keyboard or click them with the mouse pointer; using the keyboard makes the game play much faster. There is no time limit, however: you can take your time to find better words. The frame for this word play is that you are a junior Grim Reaper who is fighting their way through a winding dungeon of monsters, and you form words to deal damage to your foes.

The element that is taken from Scrabble is the letter value: letters can be worth 1 (common), 2 (uncommon), or 3 (rare) points, which count toward the damage that you deal to a monster when you submit a word.

The CRPG elements are that your character and your foes have hit points (HP), each battle you win earns you experience points (XP) and crystals, and you use the crystals and XP to improve your character's abilities.

[b]Battles[/b]: In a battle, when you submit a word, it does damage to your opponent, which is subtracted from its HP. If it still has a positive number of HP, it takes an action (which is usually an attack that does your character damage). If you ever take enough damage for your HP to be reduced to zero, you lose that level. Once you've completed a level, it is marked on the map, and you can select that level again in the future so you don't have to start from the very beginning every time you play. Some of the levels include fights with "boss monsters:" especially tough foes that have special defenses and/or special attacks. Special defenses usually involve reducing the amount of damage from all words in a particular category. For instance, they could take no damage from 3-letter words, or take reduced damage from any words that don't contain a double letter ('EE' or 'SS' or 'TT,' for example). Special attacks are things that alter your selection of letters, including: turning a bunch of the letters into the same letter (such as "Z"), poison tiles (some of the letters turn green and will do damage to you as well as your foe), plague tiles (some of the letters turn red, do no damage, and will "infect" adjacent tiles if they're not used), petrified tiles (some of the letters turn to stone and can't be played), spin tiles (some of the letters are inverted, making them [i]slightly[/i] harder to read), and tornado tiles (some of the letters are marked with a twister and will randomly change each turn if they aren't played).

[b]Awards[/b]: When you complete a level - usually a chain of several monsters - your character is awarded crystals and XP. The crystals are currency that you use to buy weapons, potions, and books. There are no purchases you can make that cost real money; everything uses the crystals that you earn by completing levels in the game.

[b]Weapons[/b]: You can equip one weapon at a time, and each weapon has an effect on gameplay: some do more damage, some provide healing, some increase the XP earned, some increase the crystals you earn. Some of the weapons are unlocked by paying a fee of crystals, others are unlocked by achieving in-game goals.

[b]Potions[/b]: Potions are items that you can use once that give a temporary benefit: healing your character, reducing the damage of enemy attacks, increasing the damage of your attacks, etc. You have a limit on how many potions you can carry, which can be increased by spending crystals.

[b]Books[/b]: Books are key items that you purchase using crystals; each one provides a permanent boost to your character, and the XP that you earn by completing levels is automatically applied to improving/"leveling up" the book(s) you have equipped. There are more books than you can equip at one time, so part of the fun is choosing which book(s) to equip to help you with your particular play-style. Are you going to focus on playing longer words? There's a book for that. Are you going to focus on forming words with high-value letters? There's a book for that, too.

Letter Quest is a [u]great[/u] game, and a must-have for any fan of word games.

I'm sure it can even be helpful to understand English a lot better if it's not a language you natively speak!

It's cute, simple, and fun. Not by any means a "must play", but still a good game to kill time.

I enjoy this game wholeheartedly. For a game that's not Bookworm Adventures or Bookworm Adventures Vol. 2, it does a good job of scratching the itch of defeating monsters by spelling out words... If EA loosens the reins on Popcap enough that we are allowed to purchase Bookworm Adventures and Bookworm Adventures Vol. 2, then I will be heading back to Bookworm Adventures and Bookworm Adventures Vol. 2. But this is good enough for now.

[h1]Le jeu[/h1]

[i]Note: j'ai déjà évalué la version Remastered, celle-ci est donc relativement identique.[/i]

Un jeu de lettres, avec quelques éléments de RPG. Grimm et Rose vont casser la bouche des méchants fantômes qui sont sur la route de la pizzeria, à grands coups de mots les plus longs possibles dans leur face. Ils auraient dû penser à commander, c'est quand même vachement plus simple.

Le mode histoire propose 40 niveaux, dont 10 niveaux "boss", chaque niveau comportant 3 challenges supplémentaires : le mode chronométré, le mode moyen proposant une spécificité sur le niveau entier, et le mode hard, avec une spécificité différente sur chaque monstre. Les spécificités vont de "prends des dégâts double sur les mots avec trois voyelles" à "ne prends aucun dégâts si le mot comporte la lettre K". Il y en a pas mal de différentes, et les suivre est essentiel pour la victoire.

Niveau RPG, c'est basique : on collecte des crystaux dans les niveaux, et on peut les utiliser pour différents upgrades: vie, armure, différentes faux qui donnent du lifesteal ou de l'esquive, ... Ces upgrades seront utiles en avançant dans le jeu, les monstres faisant de plus en plus de dégâts.

Le jeu est uniquement en anglais. Je suis loin d'avoir beaucoup de vocabulaire, mais j'ai pû terminer le jeu sans problème. Je me suis fait avoir sans cesse sur le Y qui est considéré comme une voyelle en français mais pas en anglais cela dit... -_-

Le jeu donne la définition de chaque mot qu'on utilise, c'est intéressant, mais c'est souvent une définition un peu obscure, pas forcément celle de l'usage le plus courant du mot. Notez que Grimm et sa copine ne semblent pas connaître le moindre gros mot. A part ça, ils semblent bien connaître le dico!

On débloque un mode difficule au bout d'un moment dans l'histoire, qui permet de tout recommencer avec une difficulté plus élevée. C'est surtout plus difficile au début, quand on a très peu d'upgrades, mais par la suite ça se termine sans problème.

Coté son, si les bruitages sont OK, je trouve que la musique ne va pas du tout avec le jeu... elle a d'ailleurs été refaite dans la version remastered (et elle est bien mieux).

[h1]Rejouabilité, achievements[/h1]

Si la version remastered propose un mode endless, ce n'est pas le cas ici. On peut toujours refaire les niveaux en boucle pour tenter d'améliorer son score cela dit.

Au niveau des achievements, aucun n'est difficile, la majorité sera obtenue simplement en finissant tous les niveaux et en obtenant toutes les étoiles.

Un excellent jeu de lettres. Il a ce petit goût de "juste une dernière partie" qui le rends très consommateur de temps... :).

Le jeu n'a pas de version native mais fonctionne sans problème avec Proton 8.0-4. A noter que le remaster du jeu a une version native qui fonctionne sans aucun problèmes, autant jouer au remaster.

Oh boy, i can't imagine what to say about this game, i mean... English is not my 1st language, but at least, i know a lot of words, but this game? SomeHOW, you can BET 80% of the time, the word is not accepted eventhough it should ! Like you can totally google the word online BUT the game won't let you !

It's basically scrabble with some light RPG elements added on top like potions, quests and upgrade modifiers.
Each level has 3 challenge stages. The first challenge is Time Trial, the 2nd can have any number of modifiers added to the level like 3 banned letters, 4 letter words do no damage, etc. and the 3rd challenge is 'Enemies are Elite'(more health, do more damage to you).

If you like scrabble you'll like this game.

I did notice that a fair number of words, especially long ones, aren't recognized, and some names are recognized while others aren't: Diana isn't recognized while Jenny is.

After you've used a word it shows the definition of it on the side.

I'd say it's quite a niche genre, but if it is a niche you enjoy then I think you'll find this game satisfactory.

Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey is the perfect combination between a turn-based RPG and the Scrabble board game. Basically, you attack enemies by forming words from a selection of 15 letter tiles. Rarer letters do higher damage, and the bigger the word, the bigger the damage.
Of course, this means that knowing a lot of vocabulary is a great help. However, if English isn’t your first language, you may struggle a bit, because even if you understand English, you probably aren’t used to spelling words like this, and lack some pattern recognition skills for this.
However, the main game is completely doable by mostly spelling smaller words, just requiring a bit more grind to buy upgrades more often. Each level has 3 variations: a time-trial, special conditions and a hard more. The difficulty of these varies but they offer unique challenges.
Besides a multitude of upgrades, enemies can also give various negative effects to tiles, which becomes more frequent the further you progress. In contrast, some tiles have a chance of giving a positive effect when used, so there’s a lot of additional mechanics to prevent the game from becoming stale. Sometimes you can encounter a helpful merchant mid-level or a treasure you can open by beating a hangman minigame.
There’s a decent amount of content here, including a lot of varied achievements to pursue. The game tracks a lot of stats, some with Steam leaderboards.
The Remastered version also includes an endless mode, an awesome soundtrack and has more polish overall. However, you can still play the original version if you like, since it’s also included.
If you’re a native English speaker or have great knowledge about the language, then I can easily recommend this game on sale. It has a unique formula (although it’s similar to Bookworm Adventures) that works and is enjoyable. If English is your second language, I can still recommend it as well, although you may struggle more. But you’re just not very comfortable with the language, then I don’t think this is worth it.

If you like words and want to test the limits of your vocabulary, this is a great game! I loved it. It has been very well thought out and ramps up the level of challenge right to the end without at any point getting insanely frustrating. On top of that, the graphics are super cute! My only criticism would be that some of the word definitions given are a little odd - or else a more obscure definition seems to have sometimes been substituted for the more common definition - but that is a very minor point which does not at all detract from gameplay. Oh, and it's addictive - expect to look up and find that time has just disappeared... ;)

If you put water and dirt to something, do you ad-mire?
„Trogon“ is a word and „Orion“ isn‘t?
Why can I find scissors in the game, but not in my room?
Yay, why?

I really liked the game, bought it years ago and came back to the game again, trying to finish all achievements, luckily did, hardest part was the "1hp-challenge"
I like that you have to adapt a lot of abilities to finish different levels, keeps the game interesting, some are even with the "advanced time upgrade" hard to do.

Well... kinda entertaining. This is a word/RPG game of sorts. The graphics are modest. The music is even more modest. The story is just a plot and of no transcendence.

No bugs or crashes. Works fine on win 7.

Likely, you gonna dump a few hours here cause is entertaining enough. There are several variants and "quests". Different enemies with special strengths and weaknesses. An extensive campaign and several upgrades. Despite all that, it slowly, but surely, becomes repetitive and somewhat boring. You know, some games you just want to finish because they became a chore in a way but you will beat the game nevertheless. It includes cards and achievements. I played the original version. Hope the remastered is better. For this one... I'll give a thumbs up and leave an unenthusiastic recommendation.

This game is exactly what it sounds like.

You are given 15 random letters and must make words in order to attack the monsters in the dungeons.
There are upgrades and new challenges, including a hard mode that unlocks when you finish the game.
(Playing the hard mode is not required for achievements.)

A nice feature of this game is that once you spell a word, the definition of that word is shown on the lefthand side of the screen.

The game accepts enough words that you are unlikely to struggle the way you might with cheap games which have a limited dictionary/wordlist.
There are very few actual words which aren't accepted by the game, and there are also some slang words & names which ARE accepted. The game doesn't appear to update it's dictionary, so not all slang is accepted.
But the game DOES accept Americanized spellings as well as proper English spellings, which is a nice change.

Wordscapes a další podobné slovní hry se mi doteď úspěšně vyhýbaly a vlastně ani nevím, jak se Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey dostalo do mé knihovny. Vyštrachala jsem ho, když jsem se nudila v Arizoně a nakonec jsme hráli společně s mou drahou polovičkou, která už je ve Wordscapes za levelem 9500 a tak se dost nudí.

Představte si, že jste smrtka, co si chce dát pizzu, ale nikdo nedováží a k nejbližší pizzerce je to přes hřbitov, strašidelný les a opuštěné cesty plné strašidel a monster, a pizzerka vypadá spíš jako laboratoř, než restaurace. Zlý sen? Rozhodně pro Grimma, který se k pizze musí doslova propsat přes všemožné nástrahy. Jeho zbraní je smťácká kosa poháněná slovy - čím další slova, tím silnější úder. Nedaří se porazit nepřítele? Kopněte do sebe lektvar, vylepšete si ochranu před útoky, kupte si knihy, protože v knihách je moudrost a zkuste to znovu. Nepřítel se bude bránit a bez zlepšení to občas prostě nedáte.

Grimm's Journey určitě na nějakou chvíli zabaví. Pro mě ta chvíle trvala asi 40 hodin, protože je to milý, není to překombinovaný a přesto člověk levely jen tak nepropluje a rozhodně si protáhne mozkové závity.

Yes! I love letters and good letter or spelling related games. Letter Quest is one of the best in its own niche category. I've got a hefty backlog of great games I haven't touched yet, but I keep thinking I might just play Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered sometimes for a casual game, while listening to a stream or something, despite already having finished the original one. It is just that good!

Prosta dobrze zrobiona gierka ze słownikiem w tle. Animacje przyjemne, rozgrywka spokojna,
nie wiem na ile może przydać się przy szlifowaniu angielskiego, ale wydaje się, że może dać radę.

Nie mam się do czego doczepić od strony technicznej. Gra jest b. czytelna, grafika urocza, rozgrywka spokojna, błędów nie znalazłem. Ot Kolejna dobra mało znana gra z dość niszowej kategorii.

EDIT: Coś się dzieje z wydajnością po chwili grania. Gra po 2-3 walkach zwalnia niemiłosiernie. Restart pomaga.

I would say this is the Dark Souls of word games, but it wouldn't be fair because Dark Souls is skill based and has no grind.

For context I've loved these scrabble like word games all my life, so I'm not too shabby with it. Letter Quest was fine until it started with all the conditions. Eg. Words over 5 letters long does no damage. Wtf? Why take the fun out of it? It basically punishes the player for being good. Feels bad man.

As if that wasn't enough, our Grimm does so little damage despite using all the boosted damage tiles, plus coming up with long words using rarer characters (this is why I compared it to Dark Souls). Meanwhile the enemies do so much damage so early on that it's impossible to not burn through potions even on the early stages. All the gems are pretty much spent on potions, making it tough to buy the very needed upgrades.

Repetitive, unrewarding, frustrating conditions and grinding. I'm giving this game a pass. The only good things are the cute graphics and witty writing on the enemies.

我觉得总体来讲无论是娱乐性还是学习性都不太好。游戏中每次给出的字母好像就是完全随机的，我觉得应该先自己在单词库里面选出一些单词，再把它们打散这样随机，让我们每次拼单词只要熟悉就一定能拼出来一个够长的单词，不然脸黑的话，刷出来的字母一个也拼不出或者只能拼2个或3个字母的单词，伤害太低根本打不动怪物，而且拼出来如果太多是生僻词，也起不到学习的作用。

Letter Quest reminds me strongly of Bookworm Adventures, both in its style of play and its adorable graphics. I'm normally not much of a gamer but this little gem is a treat for eye and brain. Highly recommended, though some of the text is small enough to be tricky to read.

Very fun word game. I enjoy spending free time working my brain. The different characters among the different levels request certain things (ex: one character cannot be damaged by any word using the letter E) so you must defeat the character standing in your path, using words without that letter.
The levels increase and get more difficult, you can upgrade items and inventory, choose and unlock different characters, weapons, and tiles.
Overall this is a great word game with some additional battling, and challenges that are unexpected.

An excellent word game that can run even on a netbook.

But, it is based on repetition and grind especially for the upgrades.

And like many other games - there are far too many upgrades many of which you don't actually ever bother to need to unlock.

Definitely worth playing and I will play the remastered version again in future to get the achievements there.
