This is the ultimate RTS in terms of transparency. It is SO easy to see why and where troops will engage. I also like the free troop construction. Lots of freedom! I can put two vampires here with four crossbowmen and a healer etcetera with great control.

Я тогда учился в начальной школе (3-4 класс). Я и мой друг Влад были у меня на хате и мы дрались подушками, как вдруг, откуда не возьмись, нашелся этот диск. Я не помню, откуда он взялся - я не покупал. Возможно отец домой принес. Правды уже не узнаем, откуда он взялся. Мы ее установили и мне это игры очень понравилась. Помню, когда строили юниты, выбирали, кто за какую пешку играет. "Это я, это я!". Наиграл я в нее приличное количество часов. Помню, как сделал щит, который носит мечник у людей, из картона и отбивался им от одноклассницы т.к. она меня хотела помадой измазать... Правда потом я ей в ухо дал за то, что лезла ко мне.
Еще вспомнил, как посоветовал однокласснику Грише в нее поиграть. Ему она очень понравилась еще потому, что там надо вводить ключ при 1 запуске. Помню он мне говорил, что жалко, что не надо каждый раз вводить при заходе в игру, чтобы сестра не играла :D
Еще помню, как всю карту аванпостами застроил, играя за людей. Пришла мака с работы на обед и дала мне пизды, что опять уроки не сделал...
Вот такие теплые воспоминания у меня связанные с этой игрой.
Жалко диск потерялся. Вроде давал однокласснику. Вернул его или нет - точно не помню. Возможно у него, возможно в гараже.

Awesome 4x-style RTS game. Despite being described sometimes as "low micro", you actually need to position your armies for tactical advantage, using terrain, formations, and flanking maneuvers to your advantage. We desperately need a sequel to this.

Sad that nobody developed this game further to add more missions and update the graphics, sort of WC3 reforged. I liked it and still playing it sometimes, captivating with a nice story and a good gameplay.

One of my favorite RTS game. Last time I played was year 2004. I'm so happy that I can play it again now. This is awesome!
Imagine Warcraft III with a little Dawn of War, or maybe Battle for Middle Earth.
It's a fantasy RTS with custom squads instead of individual units, but you'll still get your typical infantry, cavalry, ranged, and special troops. Combat is effectively automatic; you choose the formation of your squads *before* they engage and if you want them to retreat before their morale breaks (or they die). Total War is similar, just on a bigger scale.
Resources other than gold act like population caps for certain units instead of a quantity that you amass over time.
The setting is fairly generic, with renamed orcs, dwarfs, elves, etc., but it's serviceable.
TL;DR: Warcraft 3 setting and scale; Total War-lite combat lets you enjoy the game without worry about your keypresses per minute.

How much y'all reckon TimeGate would sell this IP for? I'd throw a couple hundred down for it. I miss this ♥♥♥♥ and it's fun and bringing this series back would probably be worth the headaches and alcoholism that gamedev and legal fighting often creates.
Kohan II: Kings of War represents the most fascinating and successful game of its time that managed to combine RTS games with a new level of troop creation and organization and with a well-structured fantasy world and an unforgettable story.

Kohan II: Kings of War is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite strategy game. Over time, I have discovered many fascinating and successful game titles that have caught my attention and I have spent many hours in them, but in terms of RTS games, this game will forever remain the best game in my heart. This game opened my heart since I was just a kid who wanted to waste some time playing on the computer and showed me how successful and fascinating games can become when you have a well-structured story that can captivate you and make you want more. ( nothing has ever come close to the magic and depth this game gave me — not just as a player, but as a kid discovering a world of fantasy, strategy, and emotion for the first time - I will always carry a deep love for it )
The gameplay is unlike anything else. While it’s a real-time strategy game at its core, it sets itself apart with unit company systems, automatic formations, and a brilliant macro-level economic structure that values long-term planning over frantic micromanagement.
For me, the story that unfolds in the series of three Kohan games makes me return to periods of time and want to relive and replay the fantastic experience offered by the story and events that took place in the games.
The structured story of the games itself would be the following: ( briefly explained ) - Kohan Warchest
1. In Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns:
The saga begins with the reawakening of the Kohan, an immortal race cursed with amnesia upon every resurrection. You take the role of a newly awakened Kohan, learning of a world torn by war and shadow. The enemy? The Ceyah, corrupted Kohan who serve a darker force — Ahriman, a being of pure chaos seeking to unravel the world’s balance.
2. In Kohan: Ahriman’s Gift:
This standalone expansion dives deeper, showing the fall of the Ceyah and their descent into darkness. You play from their perspective and see how blind loyalty, fear, and ambition corrupted them. Ahriman’s influence grows, and his gift becomes a curse that poisons the land and all who follow him.
3. In Kohan II: Kings of War:
Set generations later, the world of Khaldun is weary. The Ceyah are thought defeated, but a new threat arises — The Fallen, Ahriman’s agents reborn. Kohan must rise again to defend the world, but their numbers are fewer, and the stakes are higher.
The campaign tells a tale of unity through adversity, of ancient rivalries put aside in the face of annihilation. It brings the full arc of the series to a dramatic close — from the confusion of immortality, to the fall into shadow, to the final stand for the world’s soul.
The Kohan series tells a complete story: from confusion and rebirth (Immortal Sovereigns), to fall and corruption (Ahriman's Gift), and finally to the reunion and last hope of the world (Kings of War).
Yes, the game no longer has multiplayer or support and you may encounter bugs and problems that are not going to be solved or finalized, but these are small and there are certain mods made by the community to make the game run in a stable and enjoyable way and if you don't want to introduce any mods to help the game run better, at least I haven't encountered any major problems except when I put the game in the bar to check something there is a chance that it will crash and restart so basically the mission I was playing was going to be started from the beginning.
In conclusion, for anyone who entered this world of games a long time ago, when everything was not based on advanced graphics or looked as if each character was exactly a real-life person, they should give this game (the entire Kohan series of games) a chance and live an old, but extremely well-made and structured gaming experience!
Kohan II may not be well-known today, but for those who’ve played it — it’s unforgettable. I only wish more people could experience what this series offered.
For me, it will always remain a timeless gem, one that shaped my love for strategy and storytelling forever. ( every time I feel the need for an old RTS game, this game will be the first one I will return to and I will be able to play it with the greatest pleasure ) - and the child in me still lives with a hope that after the final words of this game ("We'll meet again... old friend!") a sequel or a revival of this masterpiece will appear one day!

As a 48 year old father who has played Kohan II: Kings of War for 20 years, seldom missing a month, I cherish this game more than words can convey. My closest friends, siblings and children -as well as my children's mothers- all have occasionally spectated me fight a skirmish battle as immortal Royalists leading companies of dragoons, inspired and supported by paladins.
A glorious wargame from an era now long gone; Kohan II: Kings of War provides a refined experience.

I'm a long time player of this game (my experience with this game LONG pre-dates my purchase of it on steam). The Kohan series is one of the essential examples of PC gaming in the 2000s. It has a certain level of quality that you just dont see anymore. And I'm sad the series didnt continue, its quite a interesting little obscure gem.
Kohan 2 is a direct upgrade to the first Kohan. Graphics are improved, scale is larger, much more units and strategies become viable..the gameplay loop revolves around capturing cities, and securing strategic areas of the map to secure resources, which are gonna directly fuel the armies you can field. You do not control individual units, but you control groupings of units called companies. The composition of these companies can be constructed by you, and saved as presets for all future games. The combat very much is rich with tactical depth, but in the base game (Because when I talk about these things, I need to remind myself I no longer play the game vannilla) has a issue insofar as that, archers do not shoot at enough of a distance, and most of the time, the type of melee units you use arent that different from each other, meaning theres not much advantage to using calvary over heavy infantry.
That being said, the mod I'm using adds so much content to the base game, that the game is elevated to another level. It adds a new tier of city known as a sovereign city, which are SIGNIFICANTLY harder to attack, and offer big bonuses to the faction it belongs to. Adds new units. Adds spells and abilities that you can activate. Changes the unit balancing, making it such that there is a real difference between calvary and infantry. Makes archers fire at a far greater range. Adds new buildings and new outposts that can be constructed. Game is twice better. The base game is great and has tons of replay value, but this mod makes a already good game a AMAZING game. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
The RTS genere peaked in the 1998-2002 golden age period with titles such as Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Tiberium Sun, Age of Empires 2, and Total Annihilation. And then the genre collapsed.
The debate regarding the causes of the collapse of RTS continues to this day. At the risk of going out on a limb, one big reason for the collapse of the genre was that its micro-intensiveness was dull and rote.
And that's why in the early 2000's, the RTS genre innovated in the direction of less micro and more strategy. This meant fewer units, along with settlement constraints and squad formations, resulting in less micro and more macro. Company of Heroes was the preeminent and most successful embodiment of this trend; but Kohan was among the most quietly influential titles that led to that point.
In Kohan, you command armies and cities instead of units and buildings. Think Total War meets Warcraft. Combine that with solid circa-2000 pseudo-3D isometric graphics, and iteration on the formula, and you get one of the hidden RTS gems of the early 2000's.
Better yet, I can confirm after just testing it that Kohan 2 works fine on 2560x - which is not something that every 20-year old game can claim.
So if you are into strategy games in general and RTS in particular, get this one when it's on sale. It's still playable, it's fun, and it deserves more recognition than it got back in the day.
Highly recommended to genre fans - cult classic.

This is one of the best / most underrated RTS games for it's time. Kinda like a RTS version of Age of Wonders. It's showing it's age these days, being over 20 years old and getting it to run on Windows 10/11 requires a little tinkering in the settings (see the Guides here on steam), but it's still very entertaining. The studio that made it (Timegate) went out of business in 2013. I'm hopeful that a new studio snatches up the rights to this franchise and takes another run at it. Bringing the graphics up to date and adding some modern QOL changes would be amazing.
I've been playing this game since 2009. I eventually lost the disk, and by then loved it so much that I literally switched to a better internet provider JUST to get it here. It's fun, Gets my brain running, is chaotic in a good way, allows me to use real strategy, and =The Soundtrack=.

It seems you have to add it to Data Execution Prevention exceptions for it to even launch. Well, it is Kohan, relies heavily on capturing resource and settlement spots, with auto-engagement battles. If that is your thing, cool. If not, this kind of strategy may tend to be a little tedious...
Fiz toda a instalação, porém o jogo não rodava de jeito algum. Tem muitas pessoas que estavam com o mesmo problema porém ainda sem solução. Alguns comentários sugerem que por ser um jogo antigo, ele não foi remoldado para roldar nos sistemas atuais e o estúdio que o fez não existe mais.
Recomendo o jogo porém a versão steam não rodou.
Acabei devolvendo o jogo por não conseguir resolver o problema, se alguém souber agradeço ao compartilhar.

Growing up putting 1000's of hours making full campaigns for my family to play in the various Kohan games, I had to grab this if for nothing but nostalgia.
I found myself getting lost in this game once more. Campaign was fun but really, remaking some of my favorite campaign levels in the editor mode and expanding on them was worth it alone.

A véleményem, hogy ez a játék nagyon alul értékelt és nem nagyon játszanak vele, többnyire azért, mert a játék már öregecske és a stratégiai játékok is egy olyan kategória mostanában, amivel csak a szűkebb rétegek játszanak. A harc rendszere teljesen jó, ötletes a technológiai rész és az egység menedzsment, vagyis hogy lényegében kompániákból áll a csapat, ezt az ötletet vette át később a Dawn of War első része is. A játék aránylag jól moddolható, de nincs dedikált műhelye és nincs publikálva sok mod hozzá, de a játék motorja lényegében az gamebryo amire a Bethesdha a creation engine-t alkotta meg. Ami sajnos a játékot letörte, hogy a készítő csapatot felvásárolták és nem készül a játékhoz semmilyen frissítés. A másik érvágás a gamespy megszűnése és a játék online így nehezebben játszható, de vannak szerencsére alternatívák hozzá. Elég megnézni a steam chartot hozzá és nagyjából 10-15 ember játszik vele naponta, vagyis nem egy hatalmas játékos bázisról beszélünk, de azok kitartóak. Én tudom a játékot javasolni, mert van hozzá egy arcane wars nevű nagy mod is, ami a játékhoz sok extrát tud adni, egyelőre a készítője szabad idejét áldozza rá és ezért lassan halad a fejlesztés, de szerintem jók a hozzáadott dolgok és illenek is a játékba.
Remélem többen akadnak rá idővel és ezáltal a játékosbázis is nőhet. Szerintem még nem halt ki az a réteg, aki nosztalgiát érez a játék iránt.
One of the best RTS games ever. I still go back to play it now and then. I hope someday they revise it in 2020's.

Great Game. Why you ask. Great fun map editor simple to use with no manual other then advanced functions. fun on multiplayer in coop maps. Good story as well. I finished it twice. It can be hard at times and will test your skill. (there are cheats if you need them) or you can make a map with overpowered units ect. I play mutiplayer coop rather then pvp so cant say much for that. the fun for me was map creation and making if fun for younger player or casuals by upping stats for players vs cpu. As you learn the ropes you can ramp it up if you wish. love the customization this game offers. -CLA
I played a lot of this game on my old P4, and coming back to it now 15 years later is still has that same charm. The UI does scale weirdly in 16:9, but the 4:3 resolutions do scale up nicely to a 2160p monitor, albeit in 4:3.

Game is still the best manageable RTS going. Please somebody make a modern one.
Still looks and plays great (But do follow the available guides for how to avoid crashes on Win10/11). The best RTS ever made IMO.
There are still plenty of resources available online at http://kohan.chimaerica.com. Go and grab the user created AIs and then fire up a custom 3v3 battle, loading up the enemy slots with the very best AIs (see http://kohan.chimaerica.com/ai_league/ai_league_ranking.htm for AI rankings).
That should give you several hours of pretty challenging play. Repeat until bored - but I've been coming back to play this on and off for nearly 20 years now. Not many other 2004 games hold up this well - certainly none that I still play.
The main gripe that I have with the game now is that you can't zoom out far enough.
Edit: Just wanted to add that being 20 years old it will now run very well with all quality settings on max, even on the puniest laptop (with which I am equipped). This is in contrast to the experience back in 2004, when viewing very large amounts of units in combat would push my big gaming PC into 10 fps slideshow mode. Thank you technological progress!
A one of a kind 4x RTS that holds up surprisingly well for single player skirmishes.
There are 6 asymmetrical playable races and 5 factions with their own unique techs, units, and Kohan (hero units). The races include Shadow Demons, Undead, Hauron (Wood Elves), Gauri (Dwarves), Drauga (Beat Kin) and Humans.
The player trains squads of 9 and can have up to 20 squads. Armies are replenished in Zone of Control around cities and outposts, but the Undead can replenish anywhere. Each unit uses resources divided between Wood, Stone, Iron, and Crystal, and going into the negative causes gold upkeep. Resources are fixed to a set value depending on which buildings you have and resource nodes you can capture with your builders on the map.
Instead of settling just anywhere like the first game, settlers can only settle on randomly generated ruins, but maps can be quite large and settlement spots plentiful. Cities produce an automated garrison to help defend but can't stand up to a focused siege, however outposts can be built anywhere and provide automated garrisons and zone of control. This allows for choke points to be heavily fortified if you have enough resources for the upkeep.
The AI is often quite good, and on a large map with multiple AI it's easy to get caught in a multi-front war. The size of the squads can make battles feel rather large scales, laying siege to a city involves crashing through it's walls and taking out it's garrison often while fighting off defending armies. Different AI personalities prefer different playstyles, such as flanking, fortifying, hit and run, siege focus and so on.
There's really no other game in existence quite like Kohan 2 Kings of War.
I highly recommend it, but it's best played in Skirmish mode, the Campaign won't win any awards.
Old But well worth playing, 27 hours play time for first play through for £6.99 well worth the price.
This was a good ol game when it came out ages ago and it's still quite good. Don't think there's anything out there since that delivers the same vibe.

This game has terrific graphics and there are unique versions of old races you can play, which makes it different and fun. The downside is that if the action gets too intense or there is a massive battle going on the game lags, and occasionally freezes and then just quits. An error is given when this happens. It would be fantastic if this could be patched/fixed.

Oh man, after all these years, still one of the best RTS games, hands down. It has everything: superb music, excellent mechanics, graphics that still look good to this day, interesting missions. Only downside today, is that we got used to bigger maps in today's games. Strongly recommend it! Cheers!
