Wow, this game is a whole lot more interesting and detailed than it looked on first glance. Very well done!
This is a text-based village survive and thrive sort of game with elements of fantasy and plenty of combat. That said, the game becomes a rather boring routine fairly quickly. You have at least a dozen choices to make, but you make the exact same dozen choices each year. Will you go to war in the summertime? Will you explore the countryside? Will you build a shrine to one of 35 gods or ignore them?
My biggest issue with the game is that it is too difficult to understand which choices lead to which outcomes. I like a certain level of unpredictability, but I've been through the same dozen scenarios a handful of times now and I still get outcomes I either don't want or don't really understand. Don't assume your advisors are actually helpful with your decision-making, either. Some of them are downright stupid or deeply irritating. You get to choose which advisors stay on your "team," but choice is sort of an illusion since aspects of the game won't work as well if you don't have an advisor who worships a certain god on your team. Good luck, by the way, if a good quality advisor dies. Your game's equilibrium absolutely will be thrown off and there's no simple solution.
This game also features massive blocks of text. Now, don't get cross with me for complaining about massive blocks of text in a text-based game. You'll see from my Roadwarden review that I can and do enjoy reading and I am not intimidated by a text-based game. This specific game has egregious, Anna Karenina levels of written words in it. Again, you can "choose" not to read 99% of it, but you will flop if you don't. Also? Don't expect reading to help you get the outcomes you want. You still won't. Some of these text blocks are stories about the giant pantheon, which you must memorize every detail of to succeed in the annual God Cosplay Ritual, and if you forget the slightest detail you and your entire village are screwed. I'm a person who is frequently hired as a consultant for corporations because of my attention to detail. This is not a skill issue for me whatsoever. This game is just dense. I got it for pennies, and boy am I glad. If I paid real money for it, I'd be very upset.
If you're looking for something similar, I recommend Dead in Vinland.

Easily one of my favorite little games. So many different things can happen, So many weird little interactions and having a Trickster on the clan ring gives you EVEN MORE weird interactions you can explore. Just build up your resources and be generous with your trained people (the named ones). Never forget no matter how powerful your person is, they will get old and die anyway so its better to let them take risks than to keep them safer. in general.
Also can you imagine burying your grandpa just to have his rotting corpse come back and demand to be fed and watered at your table? Yeah good luck with that one. Or the snakes.
There really are not many other games quite like King of Dragon Pass, the fact this game was originally published in 1999 makes it even more fascinating. This is because the game feels ahead of its time now, let alone in the late 90s. This is partly thanks to the game being set in the world of Glorantha that feels fresh and creative (but is actually quite aged having been around since the 50's) in this post-DnD boom era where worlds closely derived from Tolkein have become oversaturated and cliche in the fantasy genre. The gameplay strikes an interesting balance between visual novel and tribal management simulation, where the main gameplay loop revolves around propitiating to the gods, learning lore to perform rituals reenacting the god's exploits during creation times, exploring and dealing with foreigners (human and inhuman) who have also moved into various corners of Dragon Pass, keeping your clan prosperous, dealing with various crises (internal and external) and warring, trading and uniting with the other clans around you. The game however does not make conquest it's main focus as many 4X games do, conquering land up to a certain point is useless and just makes your borders less defensible. Your clan will never snowball into an unstoppable economy either, inevitably splitting into smaller ones when it gets too big. You unite the lands through consent rather than conquest by creating a tribe with your neighbours, a tribe you may not always be the leader of. In the long game your ultimate goal is to lead your tribe and be crowned as King (or Queen) of Dragon Pass by everyone else by progressing the game's story and securing the loyalties of the other inhabitants of the region. Because of this, the game revolves far more around diplomacy and story telling, war becoming merely a means to these ends rather than the other way around as is common in most games of its kind. This approach towards warfare is reflected in the limited gameplay around war, battles being text based with only a few options here and there to influence their outcomes. So if you are looking for in depth warfare like in Total War games, you won't find that here. If you are looking for something a little retro with diplomacy that outdoes the rudimentary systems found in Total War and Civilisation games then you will find that here, and a lot of neat worldbuilding and story telling while you're at it. I haven't even played the original 1999 version yet as sadly it's only available on GoG not Steam, but I have seen screenshots and I think it looks even better than the Steam Port that I have already had alot of fun with.

Life in Dragon Pass is surrounded by different kind of idiots, maniacs, lunatics, chaotic bastards, violent pygmis etc. So it is pain in the ass and in that way not too unrealistic. In game you many times feel lack of "moves" as you can act twice per season. Activity is mostly how many cows you trade, give or sacrifice and will ♥♥♥♥ who - no too unrealistic either. World is grim and harsh but it got it´s happy times and it feels magical in many ways.
So let´s bang your head to the wall with villagefull of humans.

Quite an excellent way to discover RuneQuest universe, because yes, it is base don RuneQuest roleplaying game.
Indeed, the game is fully in English, and so far, no translation is available. Well, sounds a way to help you improve you English if, like me, you're not a native speaker. Lots of readings, for sure, so if you dislike reading, avoid this game.
Otherwise, how to play is still a bit obscure to me (I mean how to play it properly), but the way it lets us (re)discover the variety and the richness ot Glorantha is incredible. You'll need to deepdive into eveything to get the real full picture and... yes, that's how RuneQuest actually works.
OK, just don't misunderstand, King of Dragon Pass it not a roleplaying game, it is set in a RPG universe, one taht has been existing for 50 years...
And frankly, I really enjoy it.
It requires lots of reading in these dark times on TikTok. But you are well rewarded my friend!

"King of Dragon Pass" - одна из тех самых игр, где вы можете витиевато менять своё прохождение и "быть кем угодно" (по словам разработчика), но только в рамках того, что сценарист уже решил за вас. Ни шагу в сторону. Из-за этого процесс иногда может тяготить невозможностью регулировать больше и влиять на большее. Здесь игроку скорее приходится погружаться в роль вождя варварского клана с обязательными религиозными верованиями и варьирующимися культурными традициями; задачами этого вождя будут решение повседневных проблем (случайные события от жалоб обывателей до набегов соседей), управление ресурсами (расходы на строительство, ритуалы, поиск и перераспределение рабочей силы, торговля и дипломатия) и раскрытие религиозных тайн (квестовые цепочки, в основе которых лежит мифологический лор игры). Звучит сочнее, чем есть на самом деле: это текстовая игра, так что большей частью всё реализовано через перекидывание цифр кнопочками и выбор определённых действий в окнах событий.

King of Dragon Pass is about generational storytelling in the mythic world of Glorantha. If this sounds good to you, you're in for a treat. If you look for a civ-like game, you will be disappointed.
It's a classic, the sort of game you have on the edges of your memory and try to recollect its name every once in a while, and my playtime on Steam is just my playtime now I've picked up this Steam/mobile version.
Really, even with this release, for me the game is all about the world building and unpicking the lore and myths to it. The actual management side and navigation through the perils of Dragon Pass reflect design choices from a quarter of a century ago, slightly altered a decade ago for this release, and can grate at times when the game's systems aren't quite feeling cohesive or throw out results which raise an eyebrow.
If you can get it for buttons and want to buy into that world building and the narrative choices then I'd recommend it. I've obviously held off this version until an 85% off sale so expectations for me were already suitably set.
i have significantly more hours on mobile, but figured i'd review here too. while i dont like the art nearly as much as Six Ages, this game's world is beautiful and fascinating and I feel forced to fully immerse myself in order to succeed. like my modern notions of ettiquete and morality do not work here, they do not keep my clan happy or healthy. you gotta adapt to what works in their culture

Из минусов - игра старая. Оригинал 1999 года в наше время практически неиграбелен. Версия 2015 года - порт с планшетов со всем вытекающим в виде абсолютно ужасного управления и расположения интерактивных элементов на экране. Русека нет и не будет. И не надо - текст слишком уж узкоспециализированный и нормальному переводу не подлежит вообще никак.
Купил по скидке в 85% за 69 рублей и оказался в общем-то доволен как слон. Всем терпеливым, но уставшим от парахододоилен - рекомендую.

Honestly way more fun than I expected. Wasn't really sure what this game was going to be like, but it just ended up being a cool choice-based roleplay fantasy game. I'd definitely recommend picking this up on sale if you like rpgs, visual novels, or older style games.
The game doesn't even have a drop-down list for screen resolution; you have to click it until you get to one you might like and then restart it (yes, you can select full screen). Options for what you can do are hidden in scroll-down menus, where you might not think to look. To play this game, you will need at least an hour of study sessions on guides to get the basics. That's the "level" of pure frustration this game sometimes provides.

It is definitely a great game, there really is nothing like it. The game doesn't do a good job at onboarding players so it can be very difficult to get into if you have no prior experience with it. I have played it multiple times even before the steam release and return to it every few years, feels magical every time!
A fairly unique mix of management and choose your own adventure, with a sprinkling of RPG. It's very engaging for a while, but borders on repetitive later on. You play as a clan from a group of people known as the Orlanthi and try to lead them to greatness in a world filled with danger, strange creatures, and wild magics.
The game's biggest accomplishment is how it forces you to adopt an Orlanthi mentality. Forget assumptions or reason. Your decision-making must be informed by their beliefs and values, your knowledge by the stories they pass on. So you better believe the killing of cows will bring about rain, because that may very well be the case. All this is aided by some fantastic and evocative artwork, especially during the CYOA segments, alongside an awesome soundtrack that really sets the mood like no other.
The version sold on Steam is based on the mobile release. It adds some new events, the tradeoff being that the management side of the game has been simplified. If you want to try the older version, you may find it somewhere on the internet. 1.7 is the one to look for.

One of the greatest, most underrated games ever made. Yes it's old, and the consequences of all of your actions are not explained as well as you would expect in a modern game. But it is such a unique setting, and gameplay loop: a choose your own adventure visual novel, mixed with something like a 4x or city builder? I just love the lore, the writing is so thematic, and the game has plenty of surprises to throw at you. I'd give it a try if it looks at all interesting.

Music, gameplay, setting are wonderful. If you like old-school RPGs or 90s tacticals, you'll be able to find a lot of wonder in this game. As of 2024, I've still yet to play the sequel Six Ages: Ride Like The Wind.
A pretty unique civilisation-building strategy game, with lots of lore, and a wide range of activities that almost feel sandbox-ish at times, without getting to micromanagement-ish (indeed, your subjects sometimes get offended if you micromanage them too much :). I would have loved this game to death 15-20 years ago - alas, I don't have the patience any more for this sort long running game. For people more patient than me, it can be a great experience.
I love it! The lore is super unique and immersive! And the "gameplay" of forging the history of my clan through impactful choices is more fun than it sounds! Plus everything is connected. If you raid the trolls, expect them to raid you back. Or maybe curse your harvest ...
My only problem is that the "rules" of the game aren't really explained anywhere (so it helps to follow guides). People say to play as if you were really roleplaying as a clan in Dragon Pass, but that didn't work for me. Spoiler for optimal strategy: [spoiler] At one point I thought I would roleplay as raiding clan and beat my neighbours into submission by force. But that doesn't work. In fact the only winning strategy (AFAIK) is the opposite: being very nice to everyone so that they're more likely to become your allies. [/spoiler]
King of Dragon Pass is one of the very few civ builders in choose your own adventure style. It is similar to the very old civ builders on the C64 back in the days when computers had difficulties with fast graphics.
It also seems to be inspired by early table top and board games (Hero Quest, Talisman, etc.)
Most of these games, and King of Dragon Pass, have very glaring flaws, especially in terms of action balance and risk-reward. They live purely from their settings with little else (which is why most of them die quite quickly)
[b]Summary:[/b] If you get it on sale it is worth a playthrough or two. Don't expect it to hold your attention for more than a couple of hours though. If you go for hard or a longer game, expect to battle through a plethora of negative events. The game is in a sense "un-loose-able", it just takes an unpleasantly long time doing unpleasant things.
[u]My biggest gripe[/u] All of the actions and events in game are tied to result tables that ignore all context.
Perfect example: when raiding another clan for plunder or land, the enemy warriors can simply withdraw therefore nullifying the raid. I wonder why no civilization in the history of the world thought about that trick when they where raided by barbarians.

[*]A lot of things that can be done have virtually no impact. i.e. most of the traits of ring members, most of the blessings, temples, lore, mysteries, relation with other clans, alliances, most of the events, relations with deities and spirits, etc.
[*]The only thing that matters long term is number of cattle and number of goods produced. The latter of which is directly tied to crafters and trade routes. Everything in game is either paid for with or mitigated by these two things.
[*]Raids and battles on easy are easy. On hard expect to see your 50 thanes and 300 foot repelled by 2 thanes and a handful of foot. (it is even funnier, when during said fight, more of your auxiliary are captured than the enemy has fighters)
[*]Once you have trade routes with most of the clans on the map, you can afford all of the random events and all of the temples.
[*]A lot of the events are tied to certain conditions and pop once these conditions are fulfilled. I.e. if you send 20 thanes trading you will get the event where your clan is complaining about too few thanes, only to complain one click later that you have too many once they are all back.
[*]Similarly the clan is complaining about too few farmers and too many people, regardless of how much food is stored. (you can only hire farmers and thanes, everything else sort of is just ... there)
[*]If the player knows the mysteries, hero quests can be done immediately without unlocking them for the clan. (the player still has to unlock the quest itself though)
[*]The person going on a hero quest can die permanently even when selecting the right answers.
[*]There are no conditions to relations, Allied clans will declare feuds through events, Allied tribes will raid you. On the other hand you can have permanent trade routes with clans you are feuding with.
[*]Diplomacy is just a bunch of result tables and ignore basically all context in game.
[*]Other clans and tribes have no real economy, They are just there as targets for raids.

There's really no other game like it. The world building and lore is creative, believable and weird. It's a fully living world, told through rows and rows of text. Some of the writing seem to be influenced by modern trends and are a bit bothersome, but most of it is great. The artwork is gorgeous, all the way through.
The gameplay itself is fun if you enjoy management games and reading - you'll be hammered with decisions and it's not always clear what's the right path forward. Sometimes you'll be faced with a dilemma and it seems like there's only one viable option out of half a dozen decisions, which can be frustrating and occasionally devastating for your playthrough. Trial and error, as well as guesswork, will be required at times. Even so, it's fun all the way through to the end.

As a huge fan of text-based adventures, this game has a lot of soul and uniqueness in it and I appreciate that. It's not for me right now, I was looking for something a bit more laid-back and less obtuse BUT I can also see why its considered kind of a genre-defining classic, I'm sure it would be very fun to really get into the nitty-gritty of it, and will pick it up again someday when that's what I'm looking for.

The game explains it self very poorly you'll need a lot of patience and I believe 8 hours is enough for me.
Some of your actions and choices are very un-clear as to the result.
Reading the manuel does not clear some stuff up.
I would highly recommend this game for the depth of its writing, even if the game loop is somewhat limited

An excellent game, full of charm.
The gameplay is a spreadsheet/accounting simulator where you have to figure out what to do and why. I guess you have to lose a couple playthroughs before you have an idea where to go with this ♥♥♥♥. There's pages and pages of manual but most of it prefers to talk about inconsequential lore rather than explain you how to play.
There are some cool CYOA episodes but they can repeat and they don't seem to have any immediate effect on whatever's required as win/loss conditions.
Most people seem to rate it up out of nostalgia for the runequest franchise. There's miles of lore text to read if you enjoy adolescent fantasy worldbuilding from the 80s but it's pretty dull all around.
The cards take forever to drop.
One of the best text games managing your clan and events ever created in my opinion.
I play this game once in a while and know it by heart and with the recent updates they made it even better with new events. The world of Glorantha is one of the best stories created and this game is 100% sweet.
One warning though: every decision has consequences. But this game is far more mild when it comes to punishments than Six Ages which is taking place before King of Dragon Pass.
Buy both games and enjoy it!
Zaujala mě myšlenka této hry, ale bohužel přijde mi, že hra je extrémně neintuitivní. UI je hrozně nepřehledné a chaotické. Abyste vůbec pořádně s hrou začali je doporučené přečíst manuál, který má přes 60 stránek v PDF, abyste pochopili lore a popis některých funkcí ve hře. To by nebyl problém, ale jakmile se dostanete do hry, tak ty znalosti Vám jsou téměř k ničemu. Spoustu věcí se musíte naučit/objevit sami a to dle mého brání tomu, abyste se bavili především při Vašich prvních hodinách.
Tutoriál je velmi krátký a prakticky Vám nic neukáže a nevysvětlí. Ačkoliv jsem se lehce naučil několik komplikovaných strategických her s mnoha systémy a funkcemi do této hry jsem se nemohl dostat.
Jako velké negativum pro mě jako milovníka psů je diskriminace a nenávist psů v lore. :(
Game is a bit rough around the edges, yet enjoyable if you are prepared to invest some time in it.
I highly recommend this game. The gameplay is fun and unique, and the world's lore is both interesting and memorable. I got in on sale for $3 during the summer sale.

You can tell this is a port of an older game(1999 when I looked it up out of curiosity). I haven't had the pleasure of seeing it in it's old PC or mobile form and just have the newbie experience. Just as a general note.
I really like the games systems and management. It does not hold your hand at all, and is very much into a 'read and prepare, be ready to die a few times over' type of game. This is both a positive and negative. It's probably not that reasonable to expect a player to either read a full guide/myths multiple times to go through a Hero Quest. It is very reasonable and super fun to me to figure out how much time I can allocate to defense or raiding or trading etc.. The game only allows one save but you can always reload earlier in the games timeline for your Clan. You might not salvage much if you made a critical error hours ago though. Your neighbors want you to interact with them, but don't return the favor. Two tribes may ally or becomes enemies without notice, you might accidentally anger a tribe you're friends with if you unknowingly trade with someone they're enemies with. I liked using Goods as my generic trading or sacrificing method but realized that I can't quite control the generation of them year to year, only with trading(buffing my crafters by finding good clay in my Tula might effect things but I can't tell you for sure). The game is fairly well paced, full of random events, full of smaller story lines that crop up pretty naturally and get solved as season pass that I find very fulfilling.
Generic pro-tips for the interested:
-Early history has options for clan blessings. I would aim for Healing of Orlanth, Clan making Dance, Hundred-Day hunt, or even The First Pot.
-The easiest enemy is Praxians
-Uralda is the goddess you want at least some focus on at all times. Cows are worth gold in their value throughout the entire game. Provided you can support them you never really have enough, they're great for everything
-Check your Clan ring! Default is not always best! Neither is their advise
-Animal-like enemies can be fierce and horribly hard to defeat
-I cattle raid in Storm Season, not Fire Season
-Humakt's entire magic output is great. Uraldas Calf Blessing, Issaries Silvertongue, and Vingas Pathfinder. On magic, Band of One Hundred is the best magic item in my opinion. Followed by Clay Cow

I tried roleplaying as the Ironborn Greyjoys from A Song of Ice and Fire. We do not Sow, we do not farm, we do not bow and we do not honor foolish gods only the Drown God. We raid, we plunder, we kill, we defile, the iron price is our only curency.
Turns out you can't roleplay as a badass clan of bloodthirsty vikings that glorify violence and death mainly because the only clan we raided and kept killing aggresively for 10 years would keep getting repopulated, I killed up to 3,000 of their weaponthanes and footsoldiers over the years and they would keep getting restored. A couple of bad fights and my entire population was starving while that only clan we kept raiding non-stop was doing fine like nothing was being done to them.
Still a good game but i can't commit genocide.

A bugged piece of garbage. Not a single successful resolution of events at the standard difficulty level. I am constantly being raided being at peace and in alliance with other factions.
I'm really sad about the thumbs down but I find the game is just too...
I can't even find a word for it. The interface is good, it's visually appealing, the idea is great, and I'm enjoying the individual events that come up. The devs put a lot of love into this game and it shows. But there's just too much stuff that's poorly explained in the tutorial and you kind of have to stumble across by yourself. I am desperately trying to complete one of the quests that you absolutely have to have to progress but I keep failing even with on-line guides and multiple run-throughs. Because unlike most of these types of choices matter games, the choice keeps changing and there's no way to "learn" unless you're willing to repeat something over and over, ad nauseum, to the point of boredom/frustration.
If you decide to try it, at least wait for a sale.
One of the best ever
KoDP is a highly unique game set in a well-established Bronze Age fantasy setting, Glorantha / RuneQuest. First published in 1999, KoDP remains unique to this day, spectacularly combining TBS, RPG, choose-your-own-adventure and grand strategy. You play a clan of totally-not-vikings trying to make it in a fantasy world that manages to be both epic and realistic.
The vibe is Norse / Greek mythology meets tribal / agricultural society meets Civilization meets Crusader Kings meets tabletop meets Homer meets system design. It's fun to be in, fun to play in, and fun to watch.
The gameplay is turn-based strategy / colony / management / roguelike, with plenty of randomness, resource management, and meta-knowledge.
Overall, you have one of the tightest gaming experiences ever designed. When games are taught in universities a century from now, KoDP will be next to Civ and XCom in the TBS 101 course. It will also make it to the world-design and systems-design courses.
KoDP is an easy and hard 10/10. It has a fantastic iOS version, and two wonderful spiritual successors, Six Ages 1 & 2.
Game simply freezes after a short time. Can't even return it since it's been in library for a while. Judging from forum the game is EXTREMELY buggy, so beware.

It's a great game, but this version is inferior in every way to the original. It's a mobile port with cut content, it's lacking in charm compared to the original. Just play the original instead.

Just discovered this gem in 2023, never played it before. It's amazing how addictive it is, even though the concept seems extremely simple. The number of events and sub-plots is huge, even after 40 hours of game you discover something new. Long game is much more interesting, with some additional story and challenges, but i think one should start with a short one to get the flavor..
This game is kind of a relic of it's time, it's basically a simple kind of city management game but it plays like an old graphic adventure game. I say that to imply that it's about as cryptic and mean as those games can be, but it's somehow meaner than them because it also has a fair amount of luck involved in the process. This is the kind of game where you will lose entire runs to one bad dice roll, and if you can't stand that then this game isn't for you.
However, if you can accept some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ here and there this game actually is a very interesting glimpse into a somewhat sidelined fantasy world, that being Greg Stafford's Glorantha. Glorantha is mostly unique today as Stafford did what Tolkien did, he based his work off of his own studies of history and anthropology, while most fantasy writers today and even back then just riffed off Tolkien's work. For a quick introduction, Glorantha is a bronze age world with a complex mythology that is influenced by the universalism of Joseph Campbell. It is a world of high magic where sufficiently powerful heroes can become gods.
You don't need to know anything about Glorantha to play this game though, as it teaches you what you need to know as you play. The emergent storytelling of the game is pretty good, if somewhat limited by modern standards owing to the game's age.
The best game I played this year, a new great favourite of mine, but man was the ending a disappointment. At the time the feathered horse queen showed up my king was old as hell and looked like a diseased potato, I was already awaiting him to kick his damn bucket for years. Thankfully he soon finally died at 69 years old, having ruled for 41 years as king of the most powerful tribe in the pass. My chief wasn't elected to succeed him as queen but I didn't despair as she was quite young and there likely will be news occasion for her. And then the king of some random petty tribe married the feathered horse queen and I lost the game. What a way to end 28 hours of an amazing adventure.
