its very good game
You will have to dedicate a few hours to learn the ropes, but it is time well spent.
Pick an aircraft and get good at it (the Hurricane Mk.I Rotol is probably the easiest to learn). Once you are comfortable I would recommend getting into multiplayer as that is where the fun really begins; DangerDogz is a good server to start with and ATAG hosts regular events.
By modern standards the GUI is rather lackluster, but if you are like me then you just worry about flying the aircraft!
Be sure to save your joystick config! I find that starting the game before plugging in a joystick removes the keybinds. All you have to do is restart the game (with your joystick plugged in this time!) and re-open your config.
The game runs very well even on older hardware. It is playable (at Low-Medium settings) on my laptop with an 840m (2GB).
I found installing the sections of the game far too difficult, if this can not be achieved easily , the game can not be used.

Great simulation that has been revived by a team of dedicated devs who now are keeping the game alive and have future DLCs planned. While Sturmovik Stalingrad gets the spotlight, don't sleep on this one.
troubleshooting is necessary but overall it feels fun. I always wanted to play this game since i was a kid back when i saw the videos on youtube.
I do NOT like the main menu at all it is nothing like IL-2 Sturmovik Stalingrad where you can actually see the modifications of your aircraft ... I also don't like how pretty much every aircraft is a copy and paste of each other only with different skins ... and don't get me started on the Beaufighter like why the ♥♥♥♥ do you have 2 people for it when the person in the back usually has a defensive turret ... but WHERE THE F*CK IS THE GUN!!
I can't recommend this game mainly because the controls are horrible. Every time I assign keys, they either get deleted or just don't work at all. I highly recommend getting IL 2 1946 and/or IL to Battle of Stalingrad.
Touches on the technical side of flying, Charts, Dead Reckoning, Engine Management. The sim shows it's age but there's nothing else that delves into these topics in detail in the same way. In the game menus, you can visit "Manuals" which opens a file directory with hundreds to thousands of pages of technical information about maps, systems and aircraft. Small dev team that really have something unique. What other game/sim can you multi-crew a bomber (Full crew of Pilot, Bombardier and Multiple gunners, and whilst scrambling to get away have to worry about blowing your engines up from stress? I'll leave you to answer that one.

keybinds get randomly deleted, probably the SINGLE worse key-bind and UI out of any flight sim i've ever played man
it is a solid, good game with great potential. but be aware: if you are playing with a joystick, you may have to bind controls in game. maybe unlike other flight sims, you'll be constantly trimming your aircraft. development may seem slow, since the developers work more as hobbyists (since they have to work on the project part-time or in their free time) but checking on their discord, it's constantly active.
overall, it has great flight models, greatly modelled aircraft, and great potential, specially with the dlc coming up.
This is one of the best combat flight simulators out there in my opinion, I don't care what anyone says.
Yes, the UI is extremely basic and clunky, but it is usable, and not too difficult to learn. It works for what it needs to do and that is good enough for me. The graphics are dated by modern standards but this is only a minor issue in my opinion. It is the experience in the simulator itself that matters. If you're willing to except the game for what it is, it is really fun.
What really matters is the damage physics, flight dynamics and AI behavior is the best there is compared to all other combat flight sims currently out there, and that is where this simulator really shines. It's not perfect, but you will not find anything better in those regards. DCS World is decent, Battle of Stalingrad has turned into a bad joke, but this combat flight simulator is the one I keep coming back to, despite it's flaws.
Once you learn to use the UI, all the important commands, and have your controls set up, the game is really fun. I also have the Tobruk DLC which is also great.
Right now, development has temporarily stalled due to the development team loosing some important members last year. They did hire new team members which are currently learning the design systems and code for the game. This will take time, but in the future, the devs plan to add more content, like bigger, high altitude bombers and even VR at some point. They are a small development team so please have patience for the new content, and bare with them. They get paid little more than peanuts for working on this game. I have faith that they will get it done given enough time.
If you haven't read up on the history of the development team, called Team Fusion, and how they became the developers, it's a fascinating story and you should learn about it. It will show you how dedicated they really are to this game.
I do have one gripe about the game that I wish would get fixed. The radio chatter during missions is so low, I can't understand what they're saying so I have to read the text on the screen which is a bit annoying.
Overall, despite it's faults, I strongly recommend that anyone interested in realistic combat flight simulation, give it a try.
Absolutely atrocious setup problems if you're trying to get a joystick or any other devices to work with this simulator. I've tried setting up using both the recommended joysticwizard program and the internal setup and neither works. The issue with the latter is that the screen changes to a different resolution and I suspect that there is a save button that's completely invisible as it doesn't fit on the screen. This looks to be a really good sim and I had the very first in the series as a non-steam game. But I cannot recommend this in the least until the programming team does a proper job ensuring that the setup works.
Very good for aviation history enthusiasts.

so I got this game after a watched the 1969 movie battle of Britain and getting Il2 great battles. I was expecting a better game for it being released I will guess 1 year after great battles. I am not complaining about the graphics its just the overcomplicated controls and the planes will not stop pitching up and dog fighting is impossible. and the camera for me who plays great battles sucks. but for this really being the only main battle of Britain game it would be nice for it to be a little better.
Its a beautiful game. Before Il2 Great battles came out this was THE WW2 Flight sim. We had huge MP servers and it was a lot of fun. Just needs some damage modeling and gameplay tweaks IMO. The devs are small group that works on this still. They need more resources but are pecking away at updates.

After 30 min trying to configure my mainstream flying stick I give up. Control surfaces work well, but the game will absolutely not accept a "firing" button in my HOTAS Xbox/PC flying sticks. Very frustrating.

Очень бы хотелось допиливания этой до сих пор сырой игры и развития по аналогии с серией 1946. Тогда у игры не было бы конкурентов даже с учетом эволюции графики с момента выхода. Жаль прекрасную, но мертворожденную игру. Но фанатам погружения поиграть обязательно.
This version is a modded version of the older game that has been worked on to resolve the issues of the original game.
CloD doesn't quite match Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory for me for capturing the massive bomber formations and planes winding over the sky. In CloD you only have a few dozen planes in the sky most of the time. Which is a great shame because with today's better computers I am sure much larger formations could be reflected. I am sure there are extra missions out there though with larger battles portrayed.
The graphics are lovely, the flight models are great. Damage is really well portrayed where you can see through damaged wings to the structure underneath and you can get oil over your canopy from a damaged plane in front of you.
Doesn't provide any sort of dynamic campaign only canned missions forming a few campaigns but for playing one-off missions it is great. Careers are frustrating as if you die you have to play the same mission over again. It's a shame this game doesn't feature a dynamic campaign. Although you can get Dynmis which is a decent mod to add a dynamic campaign to the game and it plays well.
Dogfighting is very impressive featuring a very wide selection of planes added by modders including Blenheims, Beaufighters, Stukas and Defiants as well as the main protagonist fighters. I've found that Beaufighters can absolutely shred bombers with their cannon so that is a great experience!
Setting up my MS Sidewinder FF2 joystick was painless but it loses Force Feedback intermittently for some reason. This makes playing the game frustrating.
No crashes so far.
Training missions seem strangely broken to me. You have to fly through various circles. The take off mission has the instructor doing a well weird landing. Then on the first solo training mission you constantly get hounded by the instructor for being a terrible pilot and not following instructions even though it is not clear what to do in the mission at all.
In several British planes the compass seems to be reversed. I remember this from when I first played the game years ago. So to fly north you have to point south on the compass at 180 degrees, and to fly west you have to point east at 90 degrees. Bloody annoying that, makes navigation via the map really tricky.
The Tobruk addon has pretty rubbish sub-standard terrain and unless you want the extra planes it is not really worth the purchase unless you can get it cheap. It is an unusual theatre to play.
For a modern experience of Battle of Britain combat this game is very good and since it has been modded is a very good representation of the game the original development team wanted to make. Overall I feel IL2 Battle of Stalingrad to be a better game in most respects but it is a lot more expensive. This game is not bad but it has some frustrating bugs that mar the experience.

I’m sure this is a great game, no criticism of the wider game. Just more of a PSA for prospective purchasers. There is no “easy” inbuilt controller support in the game. It all has to be painstakingly mapped yourself. If you are a sim person, have the time and patience then all good.
This one is niche. Il-2: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition optimises and sometimes entirely revamps an ever-aging title. The latter is best exemplified by clickable cockpits.
This game is an enduring passion project for the developers who took the helm of this title, and it shows.
Admittedly, the UI and menus retain their clunk, but they are still intuitive (far more so than, say, Il-2 1946). The game comes with an external joystick configurator in the root directory, which can bypass the clunk of the in game menus.
This flight sim was the first I played in the Il-2 series. It comes with a variety of campaigns for the RAF and Luftwaffe, including day and night engagements/bombings.
There is no other game out there that captures the struggle of ‘the few’ during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz with such fidelity.
This game is still receiving updates and DLC. However, updates are slow and often delayed (such as the newest planned DLC). That is to be expected of a small development team, however.
There are plenty of planes and other assets and the map spans northern France and much of south-eastern England, from Normandy through London and across to Southampton - enough to satisfy anyone interested in simulating the hardships of the Battle of Britain and the Blitz from the perspective of those who fought in the air.
I definitely recommend this title to all who enjoy WW2 combat flight simulation.

If I could paly the game it would be enjoyable but the setting up of the controls is a never ending struggle with set ups getting corrupted. The "Joystick Wizard" is useless. Sorry I spent money on the game.
realistic simulation
I tried many hours to solve the issue, for me a big issue, with the rendering distance of objects. How do I know what to bomb, when it comes only in sight around 2.5Km. I messed a lot in the config and give up now. Dover harbour as an example, the pier as a reference from a distance? Or the radar antennas? In 1946 was tweaking possible,. In clod, at least on my machine, not.

Beautifull scenery, great planes to fly with and many options
Have played IL-2 for years but now it won't load. I have written to company HQ (by snail mail) some weeks ago but have received no satisfactory solution. They don't care so it's close to the time when I call it a day with them - though I shall miss the buzz this series of game delivered in times gone by.
Come on IL2 deliver some real customer support.

I love il-2, coming from DCS getting on battle of stalingrad and craving a battle of britain experience. I have tried this game is just to dated, i ran the joystick wizard hoped in and none of the controls I set work, no vr support etc I just cant if they fix these issues then ill jump back in until then ill just have to hope for anther battle of britain based game
The game has deleted all my keybinds everytime I launch it after a update. That would not be so bad if it would would load the backups for my joystick that I have saved but it does not. the .ini file has all the conrols in it but is refuses to load any of them. The devs really need to fix this becuase I am getting tired of having to fix my controls everytime I wanna play this game!!!

В общем замечательная игра, правда всё ещё остаётся несколько технических проблем.
Есть странные баги в миссиях. Например в кампании "Cliffs of Dover" 12 миссию невозможно пройти успешно(хотя там даже врагов нет)
Рекомендуется запускать в режиме совместимости с windows 7 и ограничивать fps (например на 120).
Без этой настройки при запуске обучающей миссии во время выруливания на взлётку я услышал страшные звуки багующейся физики и при остановке самолёт начал дрожать и подпрыгивать XD
Но одна проблема останется - иногда возникает небольшой фриз и в редких случаях fps может уменьшиться примерно в 2 раза, но через некоторое время возвращается обратно.
В самой игре нельзя настроить мини-стик джойстика на управление камерой, поэтому нужно применить "джентельменский набор" любителя авиасимов - VJoy + HidHide + JoystickGremlin.
В JoystickGremlin нужно назначить стик на мышь.
Ну или использовать TrackIR.
Really nice, immerssive early war sim, AI can be funky, like most sims, UI could use an overhaul and a mission generator like IL-2 GB would be nice, really looking forward to the next DLC.

This product works 'most' of the time. But I still have the same problem as everyone else. Cant assign certain stick and throttle function and assignments just drop out occasionally. But this happens with Cliffs of Dover, Battle of Stalingrad (Apparently this has been going on for years) and MFS 2024.

Зайдя в интерфейс я понял, что ничего крутого не будет. После "гениальной" настройки джоя через прогу в корневой папки понял, что проект сделан на палках и ветках. По итогу даже не стал как то оправдывать этот проект (старостью игры и прочей фигней игра на самом деле 11 года, а не 17 как пишет Steam). ЕЩЕ РАЗ если вы не старый игроман в серию игр ил-2, то лучше пройти мимо этого проекта. Да у игры можно сказать есть + можно внутри кабины покрутить все в ручном режиме и на этом все.
Нет поддержки геймпада! Нах!

I’ve played most flight simulators since 2001. From time to time I play IL-2: Great Battles, and I play DCS regularly. Compared to them, IL-2: Cliffs of Dover feels both morally and technically outdated — it still lacks VR support and has a very small player community.
But every time I return to IL-2: CloD, I truly enjoy it. No other game captures the atmosphere of the Battle of Britain so well — and soon we’ll even have the 1942 period with the Allison powered Mustang! The AI aircaft is diverse, the water looks beautiful, and the weathered Hurricane can still show Jerry a thing or two.
It’s a real shame that this game doesn’t get the attention it deserves from players.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz ist die überarbeitete und verbesserte Version des Flugsimulators aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Das Spiel konzentriert sich auf die Luftkämpfe während der Luftschlacht um England und bietet eine beeindruckende Auswahl an deutschen und britischen Flugzeugen.
Die größte Stärke des Spiels ist der hohe Realismusgrad. Die Flugphysik ist herausragend und vermittelt ein authentisches Gefühl für die historischen Maschinen. Die Cockpits sind detailgetreu modelliert, und die Sounds verstärken die Immersion erheblich. Die überarbeitete Grafikengine sorgt für atemberaubende Landschaften und realistische Wettereffekte.

Fazit: IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz ist ein hervorragender Flugsimulator für Puristen und Geschichtsenthusiasten. Wer actionreiche Arcade-Spiele erwartet, ist hier falsch. Für die Zielgruppe bietet es jedoch ein unübertroffenes Simulationserlebnis der Luftkämpfe über dem Ärmelkanal.
算是正统的il2延续，好像记得当年因为游戏优化和开发团队问题烂尾了。后来才有的il2斯大林格勒，拆开卖飞机，不地道。个人感觉从操控到画风色彩这个更真实，2003年入手第一版伊尔2的老玩家，希望团队能坚持开发下去，期待加入中文吸引更多的中国玩家。

I came into Cliffs of Dover Blitz with high hopes. As someone whose flight sim journey started with Pacific Fighters (which later became part of the legendary IL-2: 1946 collection), I expected this to be the modern successor—VR support, rich content, and the polish of today’s technology. Instead, development feels abandoned. VR was promised years ago, and while small patches appear every now and then, they do little to move the game forward. The result is a hollow experience.
Worse, this risks damaging the Sturmovik name itself—newcomers might judge the whole franchise by this entry. In my head, Cliffs of Dover Blitz should have combined the breadth of maps and planes from IL-2: 1946 with the advanced graphics and VR capabilities of IL-2: Great Battles (the modern platform that began with Battle of Stalingrad and now includes multiple expansions). Instead, it delivers very little and leaves me deeply disappointed as a long-time fan.
If VR support ever arrives (hopefully in my lifetime), I’ll happily amend this review. But until then, this game feels like a missed promise.
My honest recommendation: skip Cliffs of Dover Blitz. If you want the true Sturmovik experience, go for IL-2: Great Battles for modern fidelity, or IL-2: 1946 for sheer content. Sadly, Cliffs of Dover Blitz is just an empty promise.

You know, I used to really like this game. Looked kind of good for the time, and still not so bad. It has loads of aircraft I liked, Beaufighter, Blenheim, Wellington, and also North Africa as a threatre. Thing is, I love playing as a gunner. but just wasted a couple of hours of my life trying to set up a turret to fire. IL2 Forgotten Battles is complex, with multiple inputs, but you get there in the end. Unfortunately, IL2, Cliffs of Dover, while offering lots of planes with turrets, doesn't seem to offer them with any functionality I can work out. After about three hours of back and forth, I can get the turrets to move, and can aim, but damn me if I can get them to fire. Tried everywhichway allocating buttons, but ll I can conclude is the gunnery system is broken.
Still a great game, with plenty of interesting aircraft and theatres, just maybe don't look to turrets for the main fun.

Some potential yes... but still WORTHLESS. There is no point allowing the player to fly as squadron leader if THE SQUADRON does not follow his commands, especially when attacking bomber formations. Fix the moronic AI, do not just add cosmetics! Then we'll see what becomes of this thing.

Too difficult and complicated to the point of not being much fun to play. Especially when compared to the much easier to understand IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad with its superior UI, tons more options, easier to setup missions and better dynamic career mode.

The joystick wizard simply does not work. Shame as I've played this game for years. Upgraded PC and reinstalled. Three hours of attempting to set up the joystick then eventually gave up.
This game is UTTER rubbish. Joystick not working (even after using the wizard) and there is some chick in the cockpit when flying a quick start battle...FFS get your shinola together!!!

The game is awesome, models of aircraft are pretty well, graphics is also good but ai level of intelligence is littlebit too high, I would like to see option to change ai intelligence as it's almost impossible for me to hit when i would like to train my aim. Also the ai in bf109 always climb whole the time making the dogfight not fun and impossible to play.
i like the game but wish i could fly more default planes

I dont understand the hate. Its really a awesome game, althought the Joy stick doesnt work i bought. Even with keyboard its fun to play and the ai is very smart and i can learn a lot from my enemies in things like tactical manovers. The editor is very easy usable you just have to take time to fully understand it, maybe watch a yt tutorial. So you can make your own missions that are very cool. Im so convinced from the game that i bought the Tobruk DLC that brings a new boring map i dont use often but it brings new planes and modifications and just for that i say it was wort the money. I plan to buy the not avaidible DLC with the Fukke Wolff that is coming out.
