This is a B-side Heretic / Hexen and I thought it was ok. Started off fun and the levels were pretty cool. After awhile the weapons got boring and then it felt like a drag. I'm glad it wasn't any longer than what it was for I was just wanting it to end and I wasn't having fun anymore. Killing enemies and navigating maps started to feel like a chore. But hey, if you can get it on sale for a couple bucks its worth checking out.

I loved the vibes, retro graphics and feels like a really polished WAD. The spells and level design are amazing, I love the verticality to the levels and nonlinear feel to all of it. Being able to use the different spells to combo off the enemies was great, and of course the transformations are an inspired addition, granting access to other areas of each map with secrets galore. It's sick as hell, made me feel like a kid again. Crack open a can of beer and grab your favorite snack, if you want to feel like a wizard loves to go "hmm" in the most evil voice you've ever heard every 5 seconds, then this is the game for you. I haven't finished the game at the time of this review obviously, but I will absolutely be playing more. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Not much to say, just a great FPS inspired by Heretic and Hexen. It learns from the latter, the progression in finding switches and keys to progress isn't nearly as cryptic. There's also some cool transformations based on some enemies you get to use, some required to progress to spice things up.

Really awkward. I really dig the weapons, although their impact leaves a lot to be desired. Like they're flashy, but no substance, but mechanically interesting.

Genuinely I thought this was supposed to be some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ first doom mod or something playing through this, only after checking the steam page I realize what I played was just a really poorly done metroidvania.

You SHOULD go into this expecting a doom mod that's *trying* to be a metroidvania. My biggest gripe is the initial starting level, and I should be very clear when I say it's a level. This thing is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ massive. It's a labyrinth of mazes and hidden doors and pathways only accessible through b-hopping with the jump button. There are locked doorways everywhere, 4 key access doorways and it's just painful. It's really not fun to go through and upon reaching the next area, I just dropped it because it isn't an actual second level in the general sense, it plops you in, no ending, this is a continuation of the first level still and you have 3 more to go.

See, and really the reason why it's like this is because it was trying to have a hub level that interconnects with the 4 other levels that let you access the finale. This isn't very clear and ultimately is brought down by how you will have to remember to manually save as you go through this or else you'll lose all your progress. Again not helped by the labrynthian level design and not informing the player that, yes, they did specifically add fall damage to ♥♥♥♥ with you. You may lose all your progress between that and manually saving.

Honestly though, I think it's cool someone's able to just make a sick doom mod and upload it to steam as a full game. That's really cool. Still hate the game though. Hope I feel different about the sequel.

Nothing wrong with the game overall. I finished the first chapter boss and don't really want to continue.

The game plays somwhat similar to Hexen. You progress towards a central HUB level, travel to different levels slowly unlocking new sections, before progressing linearly towards a boss. Exploring each level was fun and I never felt stuck at any point. Level designs and artwork are great.

The weapons you get are lackluster. They're mostly spells that do little to no damage and have effects that hinder you more than help. They're not fun to use. Only the fireball staff primary fire feels somewhat useable, and the sword if you can get close enough to use it. Everything else is horrible to use. There are transformations you can use which give you more attack options. The first chapter transformations are not fun and don't help the weapon situation. Having to cycle to the transformation and activate it is just annoying if all you want is to use their attack.

Enemies are also unfun. Some are tiny, some are huge and have lots of health, some have untelegraphed attacks. Combining this with the lack of fun weapons just makes you want to quit after you get through the first HUB world. Having to do it all again in chapter 2 with no immediate improvements - that was enough for me to call it quits.

O jogo é simplesmente gigantesco! Quando eu comecei, ainda mais tendo em vista o quão pouco eu paguei nele, não acreditava que a experiência seria tão grandiosa. Não somente isso, mas as mecânicas que te permitem se transformar em criaturas exóticas fazem com que você interaja com o cenário de maneiras únicas.

As "armas", ou melhor, feitiços, são muito divertidos e os cenários, ainda que sombrios, têm uma beleza que faz jus à época retrô dos jogos de tiro em primeira pessoa. A única coisa que eu não curti foi que o jogo é um pouco desbalanceado em termos de dificuldade: alguns inimigos são muito fáceis, já outras são bizarramente difíceis; alia-se isso a uma escassez de recursos que podemos encontrar ao longo dos níveis e algumas partes do jogo acabaram por ficarem frustrantes.

De resto, é uma experiência simples, rápida e divertida, ideal para quem curte o estilo!

This is one of those games where I wish Steam had a neutral review option

First of all what I do like. The level design is really good, outside of a few minor hiccups, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring. The devs also did a great job of leaning into Doom's graphical aesthetic. Also the transformations a pretty neat gimmick.

Now the big problem with HoN. The weapons are some of the most flaccid and impotent feeling of any game I've come across. Now I'm not saying they don't kill things, they do, they're just extremely unsatisfying to use. There is zero visceral feel to them, from the weakest to the strongest. Combat in general is like throwing cotton balls at enemies and they just kind of flop over. The starting pistols in Doom and Duke Nukem 3D feel like 30mm autocannons when compared to anything in HoN.

Mapas medievales variados, algunos interconectados. Si te gusto los juegos anteriormente mencionados, prueba este, es lo mas parecido y autentico que he visto en la actualidad, todo un homenaje. I found this game because I loved PowerSlave and was looking for something similar. Specifically, a nice FPS Metroidvania with a pinch of backtracking, and this seems to be exactly it.

Ultimately I ended up disappointed. I don't think it would be fair call this a bad game, but the entire time I was playing I couldn't stop thinking "PowerSlave did this much better". I think PowerSlave beats this game in pretty much every category - the shooting is more satisfying, the graphics are nicer, the enemies are cooler, the audio and music are better, the levels are better structured and the whole experience is much more polished and intuitive. If you like this game I recommend PowerSlave instead (the remake), it's like the same game but 2-3 points higher on a 10 scale.

Pros:
Excellent game and it's regularly on sale for just a dollar. You can't get much better value than that.
The weapons (there are 7 with 2 attack modes each) and enemies are all fun. It definitely does a great job of feeling like Heretic/Hexen and reminding you just how cool those were back in the day. There are no character classes but that's ok, you're obviously a necromancer, as the name of the game implies. In fact, it goes even further than those games as you can transform into other beasts with spells (4 beasts with 3 attacks each).
Also, the weapons don't really run out of importance. You know how some games have weaker weapons that you eventually abandon altogether? This doesn't do that, you'll need to use them all and will have to since there are a lot of enemies and you can't carry a whole lot of ammo. Well balanced game in my opinion! Also, no hitscan enemies so you can properly dodge everything if you take your time and pay attention to your surroundings. In fact, none of your weapons are hitscan either so you'll need to utilize skill to attack AND to avoid taking damage.
The level design is incredible in terms of how everything looks and the layout of the individual maps. They are rather detailed with lots of massive differences in height, though it uses a hub style approach which can get confusing for dolts like me. I'd prefer linear progression to hubs any day. With that said, they have a less complicated version where you only have to go to each offshoot from the hub once. Once you have each key from each offshoot, you can open a locked gate in the hub to proceed to a couple of linear levels with a boss fight that culminates with you starting off at the next hub.
After all is said and done (3 hubs with all their various offshoots and boss levels, 21 total maps), you proceed to the included expansion which is 9 linear maps. In total you get 30 amazing maps for your boomer shootin' pleasure.
There are some negative reviews for this game which mention poor level design but they all had one thing in common, less than 30mins of time in game. I will admit the first couple of maps aren't that special but you can't see enough of them in just a half hour, they're too big for you to get far enough in that amount of time. You gotta try going further or just use cheats to jump to a later map and you might end up loving them like I did.
Great sound effects! Simple stuff like weapons, enemies, doors or even just lava pouring down in an area, the sounds are really good with lots of bass for the most part. Some, like the skeleton that throws bones at you, sound a little weak. But most are nicely done.
Great use of Vulkan API with GZdoom. Game runs beautifully on 1440p ultrawide without any framerate issues or stuttering even on the biggest maps. Some others reported issues but it might just be that I have some decent hardware (3090ti/i9-12900k/32GBsDDR5-5200)

Cons:
I did have a consistent reproducible crash (or rather a soft lock and I had to use the task manager to kill the process) on the map 'Earthen Depths' which is a fantastic map by the way. I'd reckon it's my favorite, very large map with loads of narrow cliffs and platforming. Anyway, right before you get to the end of the map it froze up multiple times in the same place, just use the noclip cheat to get around that specific area and you'll be fine.
Oddly enough, it is called Hands of Necromancy yet I rarely found a viable use for the 'Hands of Necromancy' item (brings an enemy back to life on your side). Many of the maps are too narrow and heavily dependent on platforming so I found that most of the time the 'Hands of Necromancy' would go to waste as the awful AI gets hung up easily and doesn't help me at all. With that said, the expansion maps were larger and allowed more use of it. Protip: Revive the flying enemies and they'll do a better job following you around and at the very least, will distract some enemies for you.

Tem muitos problemas também de hitbox e o principal defeito talvez seja o level design problemático, você morre 80% das vezes por causa do cenário e passa metade do tempo de game perdido. Ok é impressionante o game ter menos de 300mb, é gigante, os cenários são imensos e o game dura muito (nem joguei as fases bônus de expansão), tirando a hitbox a gunplay é muito boa, te da vontade de usar todas as armas e são todas muito boas. 6,5/10

Easily the worst level design I've seen in a retro shooter, plus the weapons lack any real impact, the crosshair is ugly and basic, they tease you with transformations in the tutorial and then you dont see any for a while, and the enemies are all very basic and bland. Only positive is the soundtrack, which is atmospheric and solid.

TL;DR Good, although i've seen and played better, including free gzdoom mods.

Hands of Necromancy is a standalone GZdoom game, which means all engine quirks and behaviors of the GZDoom are here as well.

General:
+ Audio is really decent, i especially liked the music tracks. Some SFX though seem to be not quite fitting, but over time i got used to it
+ The textures/graphics are generally well done and complementing each other
+ The difficulty is fair (i played on the highest difficulty level)
- There are some bugs, some quite obvious (overlapping text on final boss, where "entering area" and "objective" messages are stack on top of each other.
- Item counters are bugged, since not all items you expect to be counting for them do count, and red healing potions do count.
- The objectives screen. It is completely useless, and contains untrue information. It would be best to either remove it entirely, or rework it to be more useable.

Maps:
+ Maps are well laid out, and play pretty good. They are of decent size, and don't feel too tiresome.
+ Most of the secret areas in the maps are fair and can be found when actively looked for. I have seen no secrets that you need to know earlier that they are present.

Weapons:
+ Weapons for the most part, feel unique, and have their own niches...
- ... however, in most cases their secondary (or primary even) attack is not really useful.
+ The idea for the morphs you can become is great, although they do break the balance quite a bit - since their "ammo" recharges on its own, and its sometimes better than your normal weapons.

Enemies:
+ All enemies do feel different, and fill their niche.
+ Caster enemies need to channel to cast their spells, which is a nice touch
- Gargoyle Lord has an extremely frustrating ability, of completely freezing the player in place. While technically its not a bug, it does not have a counterplay. I would either just do a slow, or create a field that freezes the player (This way you can avoid it)
- The ice golems have their health bar placed way too high

Items:
+ There are all expected items, plus the monster reviving one.
- There are too many items on the bar - especially the spirit gem (self-revive). I'd put it as a seperate place in the UI, and not into the inventory bar

I probably missed some points, but overall, i liked it. Did i play better GZDoom engine games? Most definitely, including free. However, i still had fun with this game, and will look into the second part in the future.

After playing Heretic and Hexen I had itch for similar games, thinking this would be close to it I bought Hands of Necromancy, the result was... disappointing. I tried to give this game a fair shot but I just cant seem to enjoy it no matter what. A solid Heretic / Hexen inspired FPS. The key hunting is optional and isn't as frustrating as Hexen. You even have a handy notebook to help you keep track. Nice maps, enemies, and weapons. I also liked how you can transform into various creatures.

It's not completely bad but quite basic, uninspired and unpolished. There's nothing that makes this game stand out from others. Levels are boring, weapons are mostly lame, no real story. The shapeshifting mechanic and the ability to raise enemies are nice ideas, but they aren't enough to carry this game.

If you want a game like Hexen/Heretic, play AMID EVIL instead. If you want a Quake-like experience, DUSK or maybe CULTIC is your pick. For retro shooters based on GZDoom, pick Hedon Bloodrite or Selaco since both took the formula and elevated it. Hedon added RPG elements, choices and a decent story (and has also a fantasy setting), while Selaco's combat and overall visual fidelity are insanely good.

As a free community WAD the game would be good, but charging money for this on Steam is quite bold. I bought Hands of Necromancy I + II in a bundle, so maybe at least the sequel is better.

Yep, it's just another "WAD" for the classic 1990s Doom, loosely reminescent of Heretic/Hexen. Today they use GZDoom as a platform (it's an open-source project that supports modern hardware but doesn't add anything new). Back to "Hands of Necromancy", it's antiquated, amateurish, unpolished, uninteresting, unimpressive, unrequested and uneverything.

This game is an elaborate Doom mod with a dark fantasy aesthetic. If that sounds like something you might enjoy then you'll love this game. It utilises advanced GZDoom tech such as rooms on top of rooms and slopes.

The way the game is structured is similar to a Metroidvania. You start off in a hub level with multiple branching levels. In the individual branching levels you collect transformation powers that make it so you can reach other places in the other levels. The goal is to get keys in the levels to reach a portal in the hub level in order to move on to new levels and eventually beat a boss to complete the chapter.

This pattern repeats 3 times in the base-game. I like the continuity in the space between hubs and branch levels. What I mean is, it's cool to go to a volcano-looking area (for example) in a hub and then take a portal to a volcano-themed branch level. The expansion levels are structured linearly. They're just one level after the next. They feel weaker in continuity. The theme of these levels can be anything and don't flow into each other as well as the base-game.

The game feels well-balanced. New weapons and new enemies get introduced very slowly. You don't even see it all until chapter 2 or 3. It's possible to kill every enemy in every level. There are times when ammo runs very low but typically it feels like the amount of ammo you're given will match the amount of ammo you'll need. If you run out it's possible to scrounge around back in the hub levels to try to find some more.

Weapons have interesting quirks to them. For example there's a book that shoots tornadoes. The projectile pushes enemies back so it's useful to push enemies off high ledges to their deaths. It's weak but can hit multiple times. If an enemy is pushed against a wall they get pinned in the tornado and take massive damage. The weapon quirks start off frustrating at first (when you don't fully understand them) but you get used to them eventually.

The title of the game is fitting as you are a necromancer who collects hands. The hands allow you to resurrect enemies you've slayed to aid you in the level. Their path-finding isn't great. Sometimes they teleport to your location, which is useful since they walk around randomly being useless if there's no enemies around. I have no idea what triggers teleportation, it's not consistent. There's a chance they help kill some enemies with you but it's rare. The whole necromancer aspect of this game feels underutilized.

The game as a few sequence breaks. Despite being a game based on Doom, jumping is a major mechanic. Sometimes it feels like the developers didn't realize you can jump on props and skip small parts of levels. Other times this is the intended way forward.

Going back to the transformations, they're quite creative. The Snake one allows for breathing underwater and fitting into short passages. It's used to traverse lengthy underwater sections. The Golem transformation makes is so you can punch down cracked walls. The Demon transformation makes it so you can walk on lava and finally the Dragon one gives flight. It's only really granted at the end of the game and the end of the expansion levels since it would easily trivialize the levels.

Generally the game looks great. Some levels really push what's possible with this primitive game engine. It's super impressive what the devs managed to create in some of these levels. Genuinely fun, beautiful play spaces. The problem is consistency. 5% of levels are way weaker then the rest. One'll have wide open areas with boxy buildings (for example). In short: the quality is high but dips in places.

This game has a few small problems with performance. There's this one absolutely massive lava level that actually takes like 20 seconds to load. On certain places on this level the frame rate would dip into the 40s. This isn't a computer thing, this is an game-engine limitation thing. Everyone will have poor performance on this level. It would have been better if it was split into 2 smaller levels. The other instances of poor performance is in the boss fights. They absolutely spam the arenas with effects and enemies.

This game is excellent. For me it was about 22 hours long to 100%. You'll get your money's worth. Actually, towards the end of the game it sort of felt like it was running a bit long. They could probably cut a bit from some levels to improve pacing. I was feeling like "ok, let's get this over with" towards the end. Not my game-of-the-year but a very solid experience worth playing.

It's missing a few things that makes a good Doom-like.

1. Weapon heft. Weapons are supposed to feel 'crunchy', or make you feel powerful. Outside of the tornado, all the other spells feel weak.

2. Levels design. A good Doom-like is environmental storytelling. You're supposed to feel like you're moving from one story room to another. The levels here are uninspired. You're moving through each room because why not? Fighting through enemies that stand in a specific spot, waiting for you to trigger them because why not? There's no ambushes, no traps.

Oh, and they commit the cardinal sin of PLATFORMING in a Doom-like, where falling means you have to retrace your steps completely.

3. Clear objectives. This pairs with good level design. You're supposed to know how to move forward. Maybe through visual lighting, or a line of power-ups leading you, or teasing a key. I continued to spin around and get lost.

4. Visuals. We're playing with 1990s graphics. But that doesn't mean power-ups and key items are supposed to blur into the background. I honestly couldn't find a switch because it looks like every other wall.

This game needs playtesters.

Unfortunately, the other reviews are right.
This game, while looking like a stylized, doom-esque game, simply doesn't have any punch to it.
Spells replace firearms from doom, with the projectiles being tired and uninspired. The transformations are cool, but it's mainly just visuals; how the spells operate aren't all that fun to utilize.
The maps are cool, but alot of time is spent just kinda wandering around. This is aggravated due to the lack of story or goal; instead, it plays more along the lines of "walk in, kill dudes, walk back to where you were".
The controls, too, are pretty poor. Maybe that's how the controls were for that era, but it's like it's set up for half keyboard & mouse and half keyboard only.
Very unfortunate, it could be really unique.

O jogo tem cenarios INCRIVEIS, super detalhados e muito bom de se explorar, cada capitulo tem 4 fases conectadas com o hub e essas fases são do tamanho excelente, porem ao completar as 4 fases o jogo tem mais 2 fases só que são lineares e essas fases demoram demais para ter fim, além de ter uma inconsistencia na quantidade de munição e poções para recuperar vida, enquanto tem fase que você vai deixar muita munição e vida para trás já outras fases faz com que você fique sem munição e eles te dão o minimo do minimo

Not a bad game but also not really a game I can recommend. It's basically Heretic with more elaborate environments and worse spritework.

That's not to say the sprites are bad, but that almost every single one of them is brown, and most of the backgrounds are brown, and they tend to fade in with the backgrounds a lot.

The weapons are also staggeringly unimpressive. Out of the first four(sword, wand, ring, tornados), none of them feel punchy or effective and none of them have any interesting functionality, they're all just different projectiles. The shortage of in-game information also means I have no idea what the Ring of Ice's secondary does except waste ammo on a worse attack.

Some levels are also just designed in pointlessly twisty and meandering ways without feeling "real" which largely just contributes to you wandering in circles until you find the one little identical nook the dev put a path onwards in.

PS: I thought we all collectively understood that fish-type enemies in underwater combat in FPS games sucked at some point in the late 90's. Why do they still exist? Bad.

To be completely honest, this is not the kind of game i like to play, still, i think it is a good game and can be awesome for many other people!

Hands of Necromancy is one of those old-timey games, with dates graphics, bit weird controls (despite the control overhaul) and the very typical kind of map. There is exploration or hidden nooks and crannies, shapechifting, combat, platforming and a bit of puzzle solving if you want to call it that.

I think it is a pretty balanced game with a lot to offer, i just persoanlly don't have the nerve to sit through this kind of game for long.

Pretty terrible for a GZDoom game honestly. Enemies are bullet sponges, weapons are erratic and often don't hit/effect enemies, and the titular "Hand of Necromancy" is beyond useless. The AI is terrible; enemies just kind of wander aimlessly around, and revived enemies also...just wander aimlessly around. Actual enemies will often get stuck between them and appear to be harmless because your minions aren't attacking them, then you get close and suddenly you're attacked. Level design is nice but a nightmare to navigate and the map is completely useless because of how complex they are.

There's good and bad things about this game. I'm happy to see a GZDoom project on Steam and I think the price is very reasonable given the amount of work that probably went into it.

What I don't like to see is a game that isn't really coming together:

I quite like the atmosphere of the game, it somewhat reminds me of Unreal. There are secrets but luckily, they're very easy to find and don't involve wall-hugging. That's good but on the other hand it has a bad case of 'what does this switch even do?' with cryptic messages and poor movement control that will send you spiraling down pits every so often. Not to mention that the game seems to forget that it's an FPS game and not a horror game and turns the darkness way, way up and gives you very few torches and no way of acquiring one besides running into one. Not to mention that they only last a few minutes time and it's not very obvious when it's a good time to use one.

The selling point, necromancy, is under-utilized and borderline useless as the AI is incredibly dumb. I know it can do companions well because it does them for BrutalDoom but it doesn't seem to do them well in this game which leads me to think the fault lies with the developers here. The same goes for melee fighting enemies. Once again, pinkies work just fine in GZDoom so I don't think it's the engine.

The game is a little bit on the easy side because once again, the AI just doesn't really seem to know what to do and just walks back and forth a lot. There's also a plethora of healing items and although the game becomes somewhat more difficult later on, it never really gives you the feeling like you earned a win. Most of the time it's just the AI's failure to swarm you.

Weapon damage and projectiles are somewhat unpredictable due to the wonky nature of it all. I guess that might either be your cup of tea or it isn't. For me, I really just prefer more enemeis and more accurate weapons to compensate.

The map is a total mess and painstakingly difficult to read due to the multi-layered nature of maps. Although GZDoom can obviously produce this stuff, it doesn't really seem like it's a good idea. And then there's the framerate drops during boss fights ... Oh boy, did no one play-test this?

After completely finishing EP1, I can wholeheartedly recommend this.

It plays a tad slower compared to your traditional boom-shoot, but it plays incredibly well, has an amazing roster of enemies, a lot of unique weapons, as well as spells that transform you into all kinds of creatures and grant you abilities that let you explore previously unreachable areas.

There's a sprinkle of metroidvania in there, you get powers that allow you to traverse narrow passages or break walls, so you can backtrack in order to reach new areas on older levels and whatnot.

Levels themselves were extremely varied and had a lot of cool concepts. I had a great time hunting for secrets and managed to get almost all of them on my own.

Visuals are just delightful. The enemy designs and sprites are masterfully done and look simply amazing. Genuinely feels like a game straight up from the 90s, in the best way possible.

Truly a hidden gem. Someone needs to throw it into Civvie's cell.

Hexen nostalgia game running on GZDoom. Possibly a good time for people who really enjoyed Hexen, but otherwise, it has too many things I don't like seeing in my boomer shooters:

[*] Enemies can attack you through walls (but you can't attack them with the same ability!)
[*] Some use of invisible walls, although rare
[*] Too much platforming over bottomless pits -- especially considering your player character has some inertia after you let go of the move button. Sometimes, even on ice physics!
[*] Unlimited but slowly replenishing transformation ammunition encourages waiting and slows down the action. In general, there's too much waiting for a boomer shooter: waiting for mana replenishment, waiting for slow elevators
[*] Big levels with such a high emphasis on verticality that the maps become unusable spaghetti
[*] The tutorial messages disappear way too quickly, which may lead to players not understanding what their actual goal in a level is
[*] Too dark with the default gamma -- strains your eyes
[*] Necromancy seems mostly useless outside of bosses, raised enemies will mostly just teleport around, get stuck, and confuse you
[*] Weapons do random damage
[*] There are enemies that can be seen and shot, but are invincible until activated by being close enough to them
[*] People report the game being very resource-heavy for a GZDoom game, and there's nothing in game that really justifies this

At least the enemies do not respawn like they did in Hexen, at least not on normal difficulty. The individual levels within the hub are all completable on your first visit to them, so you won't need to backtrack into them like you did in Hexen. There might be some secrets that are not reachable without a transformation spell that you get in another level, but they're minor and insignificant.

A genuinely impressive Hexenlike. You do have to do a fair bit of hunting for switches and looking for nooks to progress, and the semi-nonlinear structure means you're never 100% sure if you've found everything that's progression-critical in an area.

On the flipside, there's a lot of this game and it plays with the expected doom structure in some interesting ways. You can perform several transformations. You have a bunch of stocked consumables that you can flip through during fights. All spells are pretty decently powerful and have a fairly slow rate of fire, encouraging you to aim and to pace your shots. Your basic melee tool is great, but enemies deal a ton of damage if they barrel-stuff you, making melee a matter of precision and skill.

I haven't loved anything here nearly as much as I loved Arthurian Legends, but Arthurian Legends is full stop my favorite doomlike and there's some stuff that I think Hands Of Necromancy does better. There's also a feeling similar to Dusk at some points, and I'm curious how that will progress as the game goes on.

If you don't have a tolerance for fps puzzles and item hunting, this might not be for you, but I've been having a great time with it so far. I'll update if this changes.

Edit: I know the metroidvania bit is supposed to be its killer feature, but it is so much stronger when the levels are linear. Also, with ammo being just slightly on the scarce side, you're really encouraged to use your transformations. Their ammo regenerates, so it's practical to rotate between them in a firefight if you can manage it. I kind of wish the whole game was built around this from the start, and that you didn't have regular weapons, just your forms. But I guess that would be less Hands Of Necromancy and more Hands Of The Beastmaster.

2nd Edit: The more I play the more I'm thinking the principle influences might be Hexen and Blood. Hands Of Necromancy definitely feels a little scant on healing, and bosses are a huge resource check. Nothing feels unfair, but if you're new to doomlikes or want a less tense experience you might consider playing on the lower difficulty.

3rd Edit: There is an insane amount of content here. Genuinely, just including the base game, there is so much of this thing. Every area is enormous. Every hub world branches into four areas plus a boss area. I think this is going to be a twelve hour campaign. In GZDoom. Wild how much passion was poured into this thing.

4th Edit: Rolled credits. Onto the (free) second campaign, and I like it a lot better. It feels a bit more confident in its design and is leaning into conventional strengths of doomlikes. It's taking less risks, but also I'm having more fun. I think if you bounce off of the key hunting in the main game, you should try the second campaign (and Hands Of Necromancy II, which I understand also ditches the metroidvania elements.)

5th Edit: Rolled second credits. Highly recommend the second campaign. It's tighter and more elegant and closer to what's expected from the doomlike formula. I do think it would be interesting to instead lean into the way Hands breaks from the traditional doomlike formula---add rpg progression, an open world, etc---but short of that, falling back on strong fundamentals makes a solid game.

If you want a classic FPS game, similar to old-school DooM + Quake, you've come to the right place! Step into the shoes of an unnamed Necromancer to put a stop to an uprising of nightmarish monsters and show who's the most badass around! It's pretty straightforward, but I'd be lying if I said the letting the bad guy be the good guy wasn't a refreshing take nonetheless. ;)

Now, while the story is fairly simple, and there isn't too much lore to beheld, the gameplay certainly shines from time to time. It's challenging, fun as heck, and is definitely gonna take you a bit longer than you think it will. Aside from your usual run-&-gun mechanics (which feel quite smooth by the way; the only thing that would throw me off was transforming then back again but that's probably more of a skill issue lol), there's quite a bit to explore in some interestingly constructed levels. There is a built in inventory system that most definitely serves its purpose well. There are also transformations that can be both fun to play, beneficial to certain situations and even serve as a way to progress through/to certain areas. The weapons are also unique, (even including a beloved mechanic from the PS2 era where weapons had secondary firing abilities- in a fantasy setting!! :D) and you'll be making sure to use every one of them each step of the way!

Personal Highlights:
- The pinpoint accuracy and smooth gameplay.
- Sound Effects that not only felt satisfying but gave you that classic feel of being able to discern points of interest or identify certain enemies
- Unique enemy cast. Even the bosses, similar as they are, were very unique battles.
- The game almost does a great job at making you feel like an awesomely powerful necromancer, too. Often right before it crushes your hopes and power fantasy fueled dreams.. xD
- Unique weapon variety, some interesting mechanics (like the Transformations + Necromantic powers) and I loved the use of the level hub system I hadn't seen in YEARS.
- But nothing compares to that first boss battle!! :0

Now, I don't necessarily have anything "bad" to say about this game. However, if there is ONE actual downside, it's that you gotta make time for this one. It's not exactly a long game, but you're going to want to take the time to LOOK for supplies and explore, or some parts may become much more difficult than they should be. Also, the levels get MUCH bigger and much more intricately crafted as well, which requires patience, time and thought. It will challenge your memory in at least a couple of levels; it also means you're gonna be spending some time backtracking and the secrets can be VERY well hidden (brownie points for not making them easy, but also not impossible either!) Also the music, which again, was not bad, just didn't really invoke anything for me personally after the first Episode (not to be confused with level/map). In fact, I hardly noticed it playing most times unless I cleared a level and was looking for stuff.

Overall, aside from the music and a couple levels I wasn't too big a fan of, the only really gripe was the feeling of the game kinda dragging along near the end. Episode 1 was awesome, even surprising me that it wasn't over yet. Episode 2 was also really cool, and somehow much more difficult. But come Episode 3, it kinda felt like it was dragging on after a point. The Final boss also didn't quite capture that same feeling the first two did, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

In the end, it was a cool game. I'd say for the price, it'd be well worth donning your cloak, dusting off that staff and resurrecting your mouse and keyboard for this nice little adventure into the realm of Nostalgia! :D

Your movement as well as aiming both have acceleration. Meaning when you are moving and dead stop your characer will keep their momentum for a second and keep moving that direction. Same thing with aiming you will aim, stop, and it keeps going. That along with the AWFUL controls and confusing menus made this a very miserable experience. I'm gonna go for a refund and attempt to get my dollar back or whatever this was on sale for. Do people actually like "acceleration" as I call it on their movement and aiming? it just seems like the worst possible thing to integrate into a game. Its legit awful.

Upvoting just to support the developer, but honestly the game is very hard to navigate and I couldn't finish it. They did a much better job in the level design with the sequel.

Nie spodziewałem się wiele po tytule na GZDoom jednak okazało się że Hands of Necromancy jest szalenie grywalnym tytułem. Nie tylko jest tu pełno akcji ale i dużo eksploracji, całość jest na tyle wyważona, że nie poczułem aby gra była zbyt trudna lub łatwa. Zdecydowanie polecam sprawdzić.

Неплохая игра, но к середине становится душноватой. Причин этому несколько:

Во-первых, локации узенькие, коридорные и что самое главное, очень визуально однообразные. Вся игра это какие то руины древних замков в окружении чего-нибудь - в окружении воды, в окружении лавы, в окружении снега, в окружении болота. Меняются только цвета оружающих данные руины декорций, а суть остается та же самая - руины, руины и еще раз руины. Вообще в начале игры было более или менее нормально ,но чем дальше проходишь игру, тем более однообразные и безыдейные становятся уровни.

Во-вторых, как я сказал уровни представляюют из себя узенькие коридоры, открытых пространств почти нет, разгуляться, разбежаться некуда, масштаба категорически не хватает. Очень тесно и некомфортно, из-за этого чуть душновато.

В-третьих, цветофильтр в игре очень однообразный. Вся игра в серых цветах, все время мрачная, солнца в игре нет вообще, как не взглянешь на небо, там все время месяц или Луна. В игре все время сумрак и чем дальше проходишь игру, тем темнее становятся уровни, в конце вообще без факела ничего и нигде не разглядеть.

В-четвертых, музыка. Она в общем то нормальная, не выдающаяся, но нормальная, игре подходит, однако очень однообразная и треков мало. Пройдя половину игры, я вообще думал что в игре всего один трек, настолько треки сливаются друг с другом. Кажется что всю игру слушаешь одну и ту же песню. Но потом все таки заметил, что нет, их несколько, трека 3-4 есть, но это очень мало. Они повторяются и надоедают. Каждый трек за время прохождения игры повторяется 7-8 раз, это очень много. В общем с музыкой проблемы.

А еще, касаемо косяков, если оживленный моб падает в какую-нибудь пропасть, то выбраться из нее он уже не может, так и остается там. И толку от него ноль.
Вообще, игра про некромантию, судя по названию, но некромантия здесь в геймплее играет максимально второстепенную роль. Блин, а ведь если играем за некроманта, можно было сделать, чтобы некромантия была основой геймплея, а стрельбу убрать на второй план. Но здесь все наоборот. Как то странно.

Из того, что понравилось:

- В целом визуал интересный, в чем-то даже уникальнрый.
- Атмосфера отличная. Ощущается темное фэнтези, этого не отнять.
Это главные полюсы игры и нужно признать, они довольно существенные и перекрывают многие недостатки игры.

Вероятно, средневековый сеттинг накладывает свои ограничения. Тут и с оружием особо не разгуляешься и с визуальной составляющей. В фантастическом сеттинге гораздо больше можно интересного придумать, а здесь приходится выкручиваться. Например, Amid Evil тоже вроде бы фэнтези, но там наполовину смешали с фантастикой и поэтому вышло хорошо и не скучно. А здесь, чистое фэнтези и ну, как сказать, ну наскучивает по одинаковым руинам бегать. Хочется больше разнообразия, чего то более необычного, фантастического.

Отдельно скажу о дополнении "Возвращение зла".
Вот оно гораздо лучше сделано. Виден прогресс. Локации визуально более интересные, разнообразные, появились открытые пространства. Последний уровень с этой огромной башней высотой метров, наверное, 200, если не больше, очень хорош, весьма впечатляет. Вот, если бы вся игра была такой, было бы гораздо лучше.
Но музыка здесь та же самая, что и в основной игре, что плохо. Опять тоже самое слушать.

Ну ладно. В принципе, хорошая игра, но можно было сделать и получше.

It's like Hexen, but without the cryptic switch hunt and with the ability to transform into 4 monsters. You can also revive dead enemies to help you, although you need an item to do so.

That said, I've had framerate issues in a few maps. Not many, but they did sour my experience, with my Fps going from 60 to the 40s and even the 20s in one case. The Earthen Depths map couldn't keep a stable framerate at all.
I could blame it on my laptop being old, but I don't think a random normal-looking room should send my 1050 over 80% load and drop my framerate to the 20s.

You'll have a good time if you can muscle through these issues (or skip the levels at worst), as it happens only on an handful of maps, but I don't think they should be in the game at all.

In trailer it does look fun but playing it is a different story, super boring weapons and sound they make when shooting, levels are super confusing and un-enjoyable, I will try to refund the game but steams usually denies all requests because why not

First off, my playtime is much longer than what you can see. At some point steam just stopped tracking it, so your going to have to take my word for it that I actually finished this game. It's surprisingly long for a five dollar game.

Anyway, this game is cool. Classic fantasy locations filled with classic fantasy monsters and an array of magic weapons and spells to battle them with. Weapons are fairly unique and pack a lot of utility. Environments have a nice level of detail and a charming "doom cute" quality.

This game moves at a much more relaxed pace than a lot of retro fps games and has a strong focus on exploration. You can return to a few areas with new powers to find a handful of secrets but I wouldn't call this a metroidvania. There are just too many points of no return that you cannot backtrack from. I loved the first hub area and the surrounding levels, but every subsequent hub got less fun and more stale. A few levels are pretty annoying with slippery platforming on narrow ledges over instant death pits. On the whole, I had a good time. It's a fun fantasy adventure and you get a lot of it for the price of a sandwich.

here after approximately 2 hrs of gameplay and getting 3 keys,
game is great, music and sfx are cool, if you like boomer shooters, doomlikes you should definitely give it a shot, but mind that game gives almost 0 direction to you so 30 mins of gameplay probably went to aimlessly wandering around figuring what to do or just looking for secrets,
main idea is to get keys from stages, there is a big "lounge" where portals connects to other areas and you go and get their keys and when you get 4 a new area unlocks i think? didnt get there
but yeah it was hard to understand where to go next or to understand you are done with a level and need to go back and go to a new stage, but I think you are done with it after you get the key, you can always come back too to use your transformations to get other secrets later
