I want to start by saying that Go Mecha Ball is such a fun, unique experience when things go right. The devs came up with a concept that they executed on very well on. That's not to say that I'm completely sold on this game, and if I'm being honest I don't know if I can even recommend it. There's enough pure joy here but it's mired in some confusing design and really bad bugs.

Go Mecha Ball [b]shines[/b] when all the pieces come together, especially involving the movement. There were so many moments where I was grinning after pulling off something really cool. This game excels at allowing the gamer to move around the map in some really awesome ways. Ramps, bumpers, fans, there are plenty of options available to get around. I loved shooting up a ramp at full speed, smacking into an enemy and watching it knock it's friend off the ledge as they both explode. That's just one of a myriad of ways to make things exciting and I loved every moment.

The other aspect of the gameplay I really liked was the variety of upgrades, skills, and weapons. The devs came up with some really fun ways to make runs enjoyable. Lasers, rockets, a cannon that fires a single destructive cannonball, and a weapon that's just a fist that punches are some of the weapon options. The abilities/upgrades truly allow for runs to be tailored to how you play. Prefer to stun and hit and run? It's there. Wanna go in and smash bad guys? Hell yeah! There are plenty of choices!

So...the downsides of this game.

Let's start with the odd design choices. Firstly, you really don't get any information about the in-game systems. Skills that increase weapon damage, rate of fire, or crit never actually tell you how it's increased. So info, [b]any[/b] info would have been great. Does it go up by a flat number? A percentage? NO IDEA. Just pick it and hope it actually means something. Being left in the dark is just odd. In between completing levels, you get 3 choices to choose from to help your run. The unfortunate thing about that is you are stuck with what's given. I would have liked a reroll option. Or a way to remove certain things I didn't want popping up again. But that isn't available here so sometimes you waste a pick...

The gameplay design choices are one thing...but the egregious bugs are another, much larger issue. This game is 2 years old as I write this review and there was never any work done to my knowledge to fix any of the problems. Maybe no one complained? Or I might have been one of the rare winners who got the short end of the stick, but there's plenty to complain about. Here's some examples:

1. At the start of every run my character falls through the map and I have to restart the run.
2. Sometimes when you destroy multiple enemies the sounds of their death reverberate like horrific static in my ears. And it stays for your [b]entire run.[/b]
3. On occasion if you die and select "Return to Main Menu" the game goes to a black screen and you need to restart the entire thing. If you select "Play Again" instead, the same thing can happen. :)
4. I've had occasion where I select an ability between levels and the option screen is overlayed on the screen during the rest of the run.
5. A classic, but enemies being knocked through the environment and becoming unkillable.
6. If you pull up the Steam overlay, the game will lock-up on occasion forcing you to restart completely.

That's just some of the bugs. They can interfere with the fun and lead to massive frustration. I think the game needed some more time with quality testing...and even if they just shipped it bug filled, the fact that issues weren't addressed at all 2 years later is a bummer...

[b]Final Thoughts[/b]

When everything clicks, I had such a blast with this game! Zooming around and destroying enemies was awesome. I loved the different choices presented to me and being able to mix and match and still succeed was cool. Unfortunately I can't recommend this game outright. Riddled with too many bugs and just a lack of care in providing players with info and other QoL choices sucked. If the game was given proper love post launch, I would definitely recommend it but as it stands I can only tell you to be wary if you decide to take the chance. [b]Final Rating: ⭐⭐✨/5 (2.5/5)[/b]

This might just be the most game of all time. It's fast, it's hectic, it's colorful, it's thrilling, it hurts my eyes.
Game's good. Just a chaos fest of a movement based Rogue-lite shooter. It was giving me some issues of making my eyes water like crazy, and I don't think the balacing of the game is all there (Spout kinda sucks I think). It's good.

EDIT: I don't know what it is about this game, it it's extremely straining on my eyes. I don't have eye issues with any other game I've ever played, but even just half a run of this game and they feel bad and are watering like crazy. I know for sure it's this game that's doing it and I have no idea why. It's really fun but the fact I can't see is really bothersome.

This game definitely needs more love! The game feel of this game truly is where Whale Peak Games punched above their weight class. It's snappy and so juicy, the fluid animations, the art style, everything is so polished. The incredible rolling, bouncing and blasting enemies feels weighty and intentional, not floaty like many other physics-based games.

The first hour completely hooked me, and I'm already craving for the next runs. My only small gripe is the audio, while I love the atmosphere, there's something alienating/fatiguing after a long session.
Besides that, I really love everything about this game, especially the animations, game feel and art.
Pros:
AAA-tier animations, art flair and game feel
Really cool and fun
Extremely well executed mechanics
Cons:
Audio a bit overstimulating over time

Fantastic idea executed by an obviously incredibly talented team. Strongly recommend.
