An interesting take on the side scrolling beat em up genre. The basic idea is that rather than having to avoid defeat at the hands of your enemies (as far as I'm aware you can't actually lose) your goal is to perform well in combat since the story on display here is being done as a stage play.

Continue long combos, deliver amazing special attacks, and save the day in order to raise the audience mood meter and thus increase the speed at which you can fill up the star rating in hopes of getting a 5 star rating for the stage. Also each stage has challenges in need of completion in order to unlock charms that can be equipped for various boosting effects.

Наверно лишь те, у кого до сих пор остались к ним тёплые чувства из детства, кто хочет вспомнить былые времена и пустить скупую слезу по утраченному времени. Жанр не то что мёртв, а скорее морально устарел и это подтверждает тот факт, что новых интересных, высокобюджетных проектов не выходит. Лишь изредка появляются ремейки некогда знаменитых консольных игр.[/i][hr][/hr]
👉 Эта игра имеет все классические механики жанра: вид сбоку, множество врагов на экране, боссы в конце уровня, подкидывание, броски, кооператив и прочее. Уникальное тут лишь окружение и сюжет, который у "прародителей" был лишь для галочки. Главный герой охотник на демонов готовый в любую минуту прийти на помощь всему миру. А ещё он джентльмен и пытается разобраться что случилось с его отцом.

🎭 На скриншотах видно, что действия игры разворачиваются на сцене. Нам как бы рассказывают историю приключений барона и его напарника. Зрители могут аплодировать, выкрикивать имена или улюлюкать при плохой игре. Чем больше комбо вы набиваете тем больше толпа сходит по вам с ума, а значит и быстрее набирается шкала усиления. Ну и очков больше получите в конце раунда. Тут как в реальной жизни, уборщик может не успеть уйти из кадра, или же декорация упадёт, а ещё и сам зритель может вылезти на сцену. Всё это сдобрено диалогами с мало мальским юмором. К сожалению русского языка нет, как нет и русификатора.

🤔 На каждом уровне есть свои задачи, выполнив которые вы не только увеличите общий счёт, но и откроете новые пассивные умения. Допустим при блоке вам будут засчитывать двойное количество комбо. Так же по мере прохождения будут открываться новые способности для боя. В кооперативе многие задачи сделать просто нереально, т.к. вам на двоих не будет хватать врагов или же придётся кому-то ждать пока второй игрок их выполняет. Это печально, но подобные вещи необязательны при прохождении. Первый час-полтора играть даже весело, но потом все бои становятся однообразными и даже весёлые моменты и курьёзы на сцене не спасают от скуки. Как я писал в самом начале, подобные игры лишь для фанатов жанра. Я же наигрался в подобное на Dendy и сейчас не испытываю тяги к этому. Но в целом игра сделано хорошо и ругать её за то, что она такая как были игры раньше глупо.

Приємний beat ‘em up, з оригінальною подачею стилізованою під театральну виставу. Всі події відбуваються на сцені: противники виходять як актори, а після поразки чемно ідуть за куліси. Аудиторія реагує на ваші дії, аплодує, вигукує — і саме вона є вашою смужкою успіху (додатковий рівень, котрому не треба впасти до 0). Головне — не дати глядачам нудьгувати.

Чим довше тримаєш комбо — тим бурхливіша реакція залу. З прогресом відкриваються нові здібності, але на практиці найзручніше використовувати 1–2 найефективніші зв’язки. І хоча бойова система не дуже глибока — вона захоплює. Грати приємно в соло або в коопі. Гра вже не нова, текстури трохи розмиті, але стиль витягує. Локації яскраві, кожна сцена — своя міні-вистава з декораціями. Саундтрек підтримує настрій, а сама історія — проста, але несподівано весела.

Foul Play — це гра, яку хочеться рекомендувати за атмосферу. Театральний антураж і незвичне обрамлення роблять її унікальною навіть попри дрібні недоліки: розбалансованість, обмежену бойову систему і трохи застарілу графіку. Гарний, недорогий і добрий інді, де ви будете боротися за ворогів з другом для отримання більшого комбо.

Smashy, smashy time! Best played for coop with friend of some sort... Great reminder of goold old flash games! Make sure to grab your controller and mash buttons but with some dose of thinking...
Funny story and humor will accompany along the way. Beat'em ups tend to be boring sometimes however this one is not (that much)! Main con here is the game supports only up to 1080p.
If you like this one you might also check out Alien Hominid which essentially is similar style beat'em up.

Foul Play is an older game from 2013. It's a venerable 11 years old at the time of this review. It's a handheld (PS-Vita)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience.

From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.

The developers didn't design the game for gaming PCs, as such the best display resolution is set at or below 720p, a very low resolution that was introduced in 1998 and became obsolete when 1080p HD entered the mainstream in 2006. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers.

The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.

PC gamers will be insulted by the demand from the developer that a console peasant children's toy controller should be used, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for, and must never, under any circumstances dictate to gamers how their games are to be experienced.

Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

Foul Play has the preposterous price of $15 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

For comparison, the $15 asking price for this game could get you games like "Final Fantasy XIV Online", "Wolfenstein - The New Order" or "Hearts of Iron IV". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

it was only theater performance! you will play 2 protagonists and make wonderful performance in front of crowd.
All you need to do is beat all the bad guys and make combos.
you will see a funny backstage guy over the performace stealing the show.

It would be more fun if you play with a friend.
one with keyboard and one with gamepad, otherwise use another gamepad.

Tips: use parry and do air combos, the after parry has iframe.
with the combos end, don't do anything until you can parry again for infinite combos and iframe

I really enjoyed this developer's other title, Who's That Flying?! This game is more of a beat'em up with the same health mechanic - you're invincible, but you need to keep the audience entertained. In WTF, it was minimize damage to the city, so it adds a refreshing element where you're worried about something other than simply taking hits. Unfortunately for Foul Play, the enemies and their variety are bare bones here. I've been a huge fan of beat'em ups from Double Dragon to X-Men to the Simpsons Arcade. I was already tired of this game by the end of the first level, but gave it a couple more to show me what else it had in store. And the answer was not much. This is a pretty old game, so I have to imagine it'd maybe be worth it if you were desperate, looking for a two-player co-op game, and it was $1 for a copy.

Foul Play is a beat em up. That much is true. And I can say after playing it somewhat extensively both alone and co-op that it is one of the only beat em ups that I prefer to play alone. That is not a compliment.

Foul Play has interesting ideas inside a charming package, but the execution of those ideas infuriates me to no end. The concept is interesting: Instead of going on adventures killing demons, we are instead performing in front of an audience pretending to kill demons. As such, many of the enemies are obviously men in suits. I love this. The backgrounds are obviously constructed. I love this. The dialogue is obviously theatrical and the audience's big old noggins are visible at all times. I love this. Foul Play has a lot to love. Unfortunately, it's all surface level.

You don't have health in Foul Play. Instead, you have an audience meter. You build the meter by winning in exciting fashion. The meter lowers by getting hit or standing idle. In theory, this is a good idea. In execution, it causes what I believe to be a horrible design choice.

Foul Play's entire premise is combo-based. You need to get big combos to get big scores. You need to complete challenges that require combos of 50, 75, or 100. The abilities you unlock as you level up revolve around the idea of getting combos and making combos easier. Do you know what is incredibly difficult to achieve when playing co-op? Ding ding ding: Getting combos. It is tremendously frustrating to feel like you're stepping on your partner's toes in combat, or vice versa. And it will happen often.

Maybe this wouldn't matter much if the combat was, well, good. But it isn't, really. There are so many problems plaguing this game's combat I don't know where to start. Poor hit detection; slow, floaty attacks and movements; ambiguous invincibility frames; cluttered set design obscuring visibility; attacks that aren't properly telegraphed; the list goes on. The big enemies are a big problem. The window on the parry seems... incorrect. And the boss' attacks will often go through themselves so that you'll get hit even if you're standing behind them. I find that even though I keep leveling up and getting new moves, the best method to deal with just about everything is to parry and spam light attack. You're actually invincible when you do this, unlike certain other "power moves," which makes it a brain dead choice.

Each level wants you to get 5 stars (max score), and also complete three challenges in your playthroughs. It encourages replaying levels to achieve perfection. So why, oh why is there unskippable dialogue not just at the start and end of the levels, but even throughout? Why do I need to spam the A button to get through each and every monologue instead of, I don't know, holding down B or pressing start or even checking a box to disable it. Why add to the frustration of an already frustrating experience when I need to restart an act for whatever reason? The dialogue and humor in the game has its charm, but that charm quickly wears thin when confronted by the long list of issues present.

Foul Play is a product of its time. It feels like a game that's 10 years old. Hell, it feels older than that in some ways. If you're a fan of beat em ups then I will admit there's something magnetic about Foul Play. Getting Perfect Scenes and crushing enemies in long combos is satisfying and is fun. But between those bright moments I find my throat going hoarse as I scream about everything listed above. On a steep sale, for fans of the genre with nothing else to play, I suppose I would recommend Foul Play. But I can not for the life of me call this a good game.

The theatrical background is fun, but the combat is horribly floaty and it's incredibly hard to gauge where you are on the stage - especially when flying enemies are introduced. Often you will be sure that you should be hitting something, but you're actually a ways off because of the perspective.

The game also tells you you've unlocked new moves, but doesn't tell you what those moves are or how to pull them off.

Juggling bullet sponges using attacks without any oomph. Health is tied to scoring which stays filled with basic combos. Smart theatre gimmick doesn’t fully commit with the purposefully shoddy enemy costumes clashing against a much too realistic set dressing in comparison. Also the stage must be a half mile wide.

В Foul Play я беру на себя роль актера, который выполняет боевые сцены на театральной сцене, где враги появляются в качестве персонажей пьесы. Боевая система не слишком сложная: я использую комбо и простые атаки, но с каждым уровнем ощущения однообразия накапливаются. 🎨 Графика и стиль:

Управление в Foul Play интуитивное, но опять же довольно ограниченное. Персонаж двигается плавно, атаки выполняются легко, но со временем это становится однообразным. Нет ощущения настоящего контроля, и я быстро привык к схеме управления, что сделало игру более предсказуемой.

🌐 Многопользовательский режим:
Игра предлагает кооперативный режим, но на практике он не добавляет особенной ценности. Вдвоем с другом мы могли бы весело проводить время, но общий опыт не ощущается настолько увлекательным, как мог бы быть. Множество боевых механик кажутся поверхностными, а с ограниченным числом врагов и сцен игра быстро теряет интерес.

Foul Game is a short but fun game and I especially enjoyed it in multiplayer.
The look and feel of the game reminded me of Castle Crashers or BattleBlock Theater. The story is finished in no time, but you can still complete the 100% afterwards. A few levels are a bit annoying and you have to do them more often, but all in all it was doable and fun until the end.
I would still recommend waiting for a sale.

Can't say anything good about this game. Didn't feel like a real product, but rather like a demo of a demo with no depth at all.
Your abilities are very limited and uninteresting, so are your enemies. You can't change your character for local co-op because there are just two of them, even though graphics are quite simple and it wouldn't be too hard to make three or five skins more (or at the very least to let pick color). The game flow, hardly breathtaking by itself, is constantly interrupted by a million of cutscenes (storytelling, you know), which is kinda annoying. I also don't like at all when the game insists that I'd enjoy it in a certain way (in these case, making multiple hit combos just for the sake of it), and then rates how good I was. It's me who should rate if I was entertained enough. And we weren't.

Eine absolute kleine Perle auf Steam, von tollen Dialogen über eine kleine simple Story bis hin zur tollen Inszinierung in der das Gameplay komplett aufgeht. Sehr zu empfehlen, vor allem im Koop, für jene die noch wenig kontakt mit 2D Sidescroller hack and slash zu tun hatten. Zum Späteren Verlauf der 5 Akte werden die Challenges auch deutlich schwerer zu erreichen und erfordern gut getakte Kombos. Das Gameplay ist dennoch sehr vergebend und macht es einsteigerfreundlich und easy to Play hard to complete.
Einfach nur zu empfehlen!

Очень однообразный геймплей. Врагов много и они толстые на 4 врагах я набил 200 комбо. Они толще меня. Да у игры еще есть баг при котором вся игра начинает неистово лагать при том я не понимаю из-за чего.
С друзьями сойдет в одного трата времени.

Extremely boring and repetitive gameplay. The story and jokes are Garfield level of bad. If the stages were 80% shorter it could have been a passable game with a charming visual concept. Foul Play is a boring beat 'em up game. Story and presentation is unique and creative. Rest of the game is utter garbage. Firstly main character is a wimp. He is so powerless that beating up an ordinary enemy takes ages. Trying to beat bosses is a nightmare. It takes too much time and game always throws enemies at you while you are fighting the boss. You can't concentrate on the boss because those annoying f*cks won't leave you alone. Some of the bosses in Dark Souls require less effort and time to beat them. Enemies usually pile on each other and most of the time you can't hit the enemy you want. There are no power-ups, no flashy special attacks. There isn't variety in levels. You just move from left to right. Scenery changes between each chapter and that's it. You have one special attack and all it does is double your combo counter. It doesn't increase your damage, it doesn't give you invincibility. Someone looked at this boring gameplay and said "Yeah, it looks good. Let's release this awesome game" The game has to be entertaining and fun. This game neither entertaining nor fun. Hardest thing while playing this game is trying not to fall asleep.

A really enjoyable game that definitely puts a spin on the standard beat'em ups you see out there. It has a unique graphics style that will pull you in and a story that actually gets fascinating the longer you play.

Only gripe I have is that my thumb is cramping after too much repetitive button mashing.

8/10 Come for the graphics, stay for the storyline!

Foul play es el tipico juego machacabotones de scroll lateral.La diferencia que en este juego todo se hara sobre un escenario de teatro con gente.Y ahi,esta la diferencia del juego.En este juego no se puede morir.Lo que tendremos que hacer es tener a la gente del teatro contenta.¿Cómo conseguirlo? Pues a base de repartir tortas de la mejor y más variada forma posible. El público de Foul Play enloquecerá si conseguimos grandes combos sin recibir ningún golpe, pero se enfadará y nos abucheará si los enemigos nos golpean..Por supuesto si se enfandan mucho,tocara repetir nivel.

El juego dispone de 5 obras,cada obra tendra 4 escenarios,excepto la ultima que son solo 2,con lo cual seran 22 pantallas hasta pasar el juego

Aspectos positivos :graficamente esta bastante bien, y tiene algun momento simpatico durante el juego.Variedad de enemigos.Esta en español...pero quiza lo mas importante,el publico del teatro,ver como se anima si repartes buenos combos.

Aspectos negativos.Principalmente 2,al ser un machabotones,tiende a ser repititivo,pero el peor aspectos con diferencia es el juego cooperativo.3 son las opciones: Opcion 1juego en linea....da igual no encontraras a nadie para jugar. Opcion 2,por remote play together....Se conectara con quien quieras jugar....pero luego no te deja jugar con el otro(vamos que no sirve para nada).Opcion 3,jugar con un amigo creando partida....pues vete a saber si funcionara...por que si le invitas a un amigo y el otro no tiene el juego...simplemente no podeis jugar...Lo dicho o se tiene los 2 jugadores el juego y se prueba a ver si funciona....o adios cooperativo

Foul play,es el tipico juego para pasar el rato,no es dificil,pero pierde la gracia del cooperativo,encima,hay ciertos logros,como el de hacer X golpes y si no tienes a 2 jugadores ,hay muchas posibilidades de que no lo consigas.

Когда-то мы с подругой проходили кооп игры совместно, это было весело....
Как-то я решил подарить ей еще одну игру это была... Foul Play... после чего та удалила меня из друзей стима...
10 кинувших парней девушек из 10...
Сюжет прост, вы играете за актеров театра которые не любят лишних слов, а любят они лишь показывать зрелищные побоища, почти как на колизее, и это все чудо разворачивается на театрально сцене, иногда даже забываешь что ты находишься в театре.....
А так в целом бодрый Beat'em up, с неплохим юморком, лучше да играть в коопе... и да лучше на гемпаде.

Fool Play is a 2D Beat'em up, where you playing with a daemon-hunter Baron Dashforth or with his sidekick Scampwick, doing a play in a theatre, where they go deamon hunting, but Dashforth's past is catching him, and also they have to give a proper show for the crowd.

I played this game in coop, so the experience going to based on that.

Graphicly the game is similar to cartoon, which I really liked. Fits for the game. I have to give credit the "cheap" graphical method, which you can see in the game, because of the theatre feeling.

Controls was easy to memorise it. I played it on controller, which was fun to use, however my partner used keyboard, but said no regret for it. Both controlls works just fine.

Sound and music is also works okay in the game, music is fits for action or story telling part, sounds can be repetitive, but nothing too bad to be honest.

Gameplay however is something else. You just go and clear screen, sometimes you do challanges if you want, or step into your spotlight to advance in the story. This is repetitive for a bit, but thankfully the good jokes and mechanisms related to the theatre makes everything more interesting. You can't die in the game, but if the crowd not impressed, you lose. Also doing challanges is important to get charms and for level up. Doing combos and different attacks also boost the mood of the crowd. Basically the game can't be boring.

Long story short, this is a great game for coop action, however, it is short, and for the price for this game, feels a bit expensive. If it has more content, then I wouldn't say a thing. We played online coop, so don't worry about the missing information about it on the Steam page. The game's humor is amazing, game is fun to play and challanging. I can recommend it.

Maybe I've been too spoiled by Castle Crashers. Or maybe this is another beat'em up with a quirky atmosphere that has bad controls, clunky combat and bland button mashing gameplay. Who knows.

Sadly, a waste of such a creative idea and pretty cool "phisically changing the background because we're in a play" backgrounds. Simply could've been better.

Played through the first "play" and then realized that the second was just more of the same. It's a very boring, repetitive loop of clunky-feeling combat that, nevertheless, is very hard to lose. It tries to be funny but fails completely. It's not very often that I write a review after playing for only an hour but this one is just so dull.

It's not bad but some of the design choices can make the game pretty frustrating at times.

There's challenges in each level but there's no checkpoints so you have to redo the whole level each time you try to succeed at them. The dialogs are unskippable which makes the thing even more annoying. The items are given to you in a linear order instead of each level having a fixed reward.

Also, the perspective is weird. It has kind of a "paper" look to it and sometimes it's too hard to align with the enemies to hit them, not to mention the enemies sometimes get stuck in some parts of the levels and by the time you reach them the combo is gone.

O jogo é bom, mas para um jogo levíssimo é horrivelmente otimizado e têm sextilhões de bugs que geralmente só ocorrem com jogos pesados. O segundo maior problema (talvez o primeiro) é que o game é apenas compatível com a porr@ de controles do Xbox360, quem não tem vai se ƒØÐ€Я pra tentar jogar... dificultando ainda mais a jogabilidade que o impossibilita de ser jogado com mouse e teclado.

A Side Scrolling beat em up game with co-op. There are better options out there though. This isn't bad but doesn't so enough to stand out. The whole play aesthetic is great but nothing special. Castle Crashers is just one option I would say to pick up ahead of this one.

Es un juego más facilón que el Castle Crashers (mismo género) con humor, todo basado en la teatralización.
El juego en sí no se trata de llegar al final porque en fin no hay posibilidad de que mueras, sino de que desbloquees o consigas los desafíos por escenarios. Así que enfóquense en lograr eso y no tanto en pasar los niveles, no cometan el mismo error mío (yo llegué con una habilidad solamente al final, que te lo dan luego de completar los 3 desafíos por escenario).
Excelente para Co-Op. El juego en línea anda genial. Es un juego más discreto que el Castle Crashers y no lo veo rejugable, pero sí bueno para pasar el rato.

This game is a blast to play. especially as a coop experience. obviously really reminiscent of the game Castle Crashers. it is a very relaxed experience where your "health" is actually the audience mood. As long as you don't get hit right after each other its pretty much impossible to lose and a perfect game to show to normally non gaming people. serves as a very nice intro to side scrolling beat em ups. I showed my girlfriend this game and we enjoyed it so much we beat it in the first sitting. Though that's not to say the game lacks things to do its just a little short. after beating it we ran through to gather all the achievements by completing each act on an A rating. overall a lovely 2 player co op.

Great little local co op game that can be enjoyed by anyone. It's one of those games in which you can play through to the end once but then go back to play again and again to get all the achievements and complete the tasks. It has a gradual feeling of progression you get in roguelikes as your skills improve. I would recommend this game, but particularly if you have someone to play along with, no matter their gaming ability.

Have been looking for this game very long and finally found it. It's a shame that it's a short one but the replay valuability is phenomenal. Grab a friend and snag it. Would recommend doing so on a sale but if you're not so patient then buy it at its full price. Really fun game and it's quite sad that it's not very spoken up about

Never heard of this game before, it simply popped up on my exploration queue while on sale.

I bought the 2-pack and have been playing this with a friend online, using x-box controllers, and the experience has been great!

The game itself is a chaotic beat'em up, set as a charming stage performance for your adoring fans. You must impress the crowds with your combos, while avoiding getting hit yourself. There is not a health bar, however, if you get hit too often, and fail to sufficiently dazzle your fans during the act, the curtain will fall and the mission will be over.

The game is slightly easier solo, as it's less chaotic and easier to build your combos, however its far more fun with a friend and is a great game to kill 15 minutes when you cant commit to a longer session.

I would avoid this, even on a deep sale. This is a game that pretty much requires the use of a controller, but the controller support is essentially non-existent. I can get ONE and only ONE Xbox controller to work. FORGET about two player, FORGET about using different controllers. Absolutely garbage design for a game that is so obviously geared towards controller usage.

Also, it's an incredibly short game. As you can I have played it one hour and played through all acts. What I did play through was entertaining. Give it a 4/10 overall.
