This is still one of my favorite games of all time, so my review is play the game. Mods were fun this time around, but I had a number of crashes that I'm not used to getting when I play the original PS1 version. It is nice to see things look completely different, but without the stability, it's kind of frustrating.
Anyway, to anyone actually reading this, have a good day and enjoy whatever version of this game that you want, just give it a try or a replay!

The best port of the game. so gladi got it when i did. The remake is garbage. the new version of the classic one is solid too.
Turns out one of the stand-out pieces in video game history is pretty good, actually. It's definitely a bit of a time capsule - early 3D looks goofy, it has an iffy translation, the minigame controls on KB+M are horrendous - but it's definitely worth playing.
Not a lot to be said that hasn't been mentioned hundreds of times before. It is the RPG that made Final Fantasy popular in the west. Still holds up as an amazing story with fun gameplay all these years later.

Final Fantasy VII still holds up to this day and remains one of the greatest games ever made. It’s a definitive JRPG experience that everyone should try at least once.
The music is absolutely incredible you can never get tired of it, especially the battle theme which is an all time classic. The gameplay mechanics are fantastic as well. The Materia system combined with the ATB gauge makes combat strategic and engaging throughout the adventure.
The characters are easily some of the best in gaming. Each one is memorable and well written, with Aerith being my personal favorite. The story is also among one the best I’ve experienced in any game.
If you’re coming into this after playing the remake, you’ll notice that the original is much more straightforward in its design. The only thing I personally don’t enjoy about classic JRPGs is the random encounter system, but thankfully that can be improved by using the 3× speed option.
In the end, Final Fantasy VII is a must play for any JRPG fan and an unforgettable experience.

First of all this game is great.
Theres nothing I can say that hasn't been said about FF7. It's a wonderful game with an awesome cast of characters, great story, and AMAZING music. At this point its hard not to justify a 10/10 rating.
Why play this version of FF7?
This version of the game has been out since 2013, there are great mods for the game. Get yourself the 7th Heaven mod program and experience the game in ways you probably haven't. Up the models, frame rate, music, even add voice acting. This is why you would want to play this version of the game. I don't I don't think the recent release currently has mod support yet.
Inarguably a classic RPG that changed gaming history. This is my favorite game of all time.
This holds up quite well as far as game mechanics and nearly infinite materia customization goes, a real theory crafters dream. Lots of combat mechanics, mini-games, side quests, and optional bosses to keep you busy for a while. FF8 may be my personal favorite but it's not hard to see why this is so many others favorite. If you can look past some of the unskippable 10-15 minute story scenes throughout the game this is still a lot more fun some of the more modern stuff being made in this era. (My childhood memories combined probably being a little biased here)
The "2013 Version" is buggy as hell. Black bars at the bottom of the screen, no matter what resolution you chose on your PC, it's always there. The updated Square Enix logo bugs out. I hope they don't remove the original from Steam. Or if this installment will mess with the original. This is a bugged out release, and I have no idea why they did this. Maybe they'll fix it in ten years! Yay!

Nunca tinha jogado FF7 original, minha experiencia com ff7 foi com o remake, e foi por conta de gostar tanto do remake que me fez ter vontade de jogar o original.
E que jogo maravilhoso, adorei jogar cada segundo dele.
Trilha sonora, cenários, personagens e principalmente HISTORIA, são INCRIVEIS e digo até inesquecíveis.
É um da queles jogos que não importa quanto tempo foi lançado, ele é referencia para muitos jogos atuais como exemplo, expedition 33 que bebe muito da fonte de final fantasy.
From what I can tell, this game is a big deal? Last I checked, games made before 2020 were bad, and all games made during or after 2020 were good. That seems to be what a lot of video game reviewers think, anyway.
The story, the characters, the music, the feels. The absolutely best of it's kind.
When I was young my brother played this, me and my younger cousin barely understood English at the time, but we loved it anyway.
Later on when I was a teenager, I borrowed a PS and bought a memory card along with this game just play through the game by myself. And don't regret a single second of it. What an epic experience.
Final Fantasy VII is a classic RPG that still holds up pretty well today. The story follows Cloud Strife as he gets pulled into a conflict that ends up being much bigger than it first seems. The characters and world are memorable, which is a big reason the game is still talked about so much. The turn-based combat is simple but fun, especially with the Materia system, which lets you customize abilities and builds however you want. The graphics are obviously dated, but the music and overall atmosphere still work really well.
Overall: a classic RPG with a great story and lots of customization.
Rating: 9/10.

Listen. There is grinding. This is a Final Fantasy game. You should know that going in. What I hate? Is changing party members. Forgetting to remove their materia. And, having no simple way to get that materia back. (Especially, when you have all available party members) This is a game from the 90s. There are things you can easily miss. So, help guides are helpful. But, with chocobo breeding there are too many answers. (You just need two great chocobos. Win races. Increase stats by feeding the best greens possible. Don't do the one "good" and one "great" thing. Go from there. Yes. It's very much worth it. You want the gold chocobo). Still decent graphics. All things considering. Still a powerful story line. From lovable/challenged Cloud to annoying klepo Yuffee. But yes. You grind. Dedicate yourself to that idea and you will find this game to be all that it is.

As a person who didn't grow up playing these games (I'm still a teenager), I came into this game with really high expectations from all the talk, but was a little let down at the start. I was very put off by the graphics and the low frame rate, however with some mods (7th heaven is the best) it ran smoothly at 60fps and with updated graphics.
My god the story is exceptional. The characters grew on me more and more as the story went on and by the end I was doing side content just to get to spend more time in the world. The game's pacing is amazing: it never feels like it gets bogged down in story or gameplay; for a 40+ hour game on a first play through, that's just awesome.
This was my first turn-based game that I truly sat down and played through and this will definitely be a high bar for other games to follow. Despite it being turn based, it felt very fluid and almost real time at points.
Finally, I feel like there's just the right amount of side content to satisfy you if you want more before completing the story, but it never felt like too much. I did some side content (didn't grind out limit breaks and such) and it all felt interesting and unique to this game. I won't say its the best game ever made, however it certainly was ahead of its time when it came out and still holds up very well.
Tl;dr: The game has an amazing story, great turn-based gameplay, and is paced out well so you don't get bored. If you can't stand games that are technically outdated, use the 7th heaven modding tool. This game is easily worth the money.

The Materia system is endlessly fun to experiment with, and it’s even better with mods that smooth out visuals and add QoL tweaks. Easy 10/10, no nostalgia goggles needed.

I love this game. I grew up with it and still return to it as much as possible! Highly recommend!
Peak game. The story is great, and exploration offers unique cutscenes and rewards. The Steam port is good enough to enjoy the game and if needed, there are always mods like Seventh Heaven. While you cannot remap actions to keybinds/controller buttons (they reset after each login), the default controls aren't complex and takes about a day to get used to.

while yes this version lacks cloud saving, you can set up symlinks to cloud storage services like google drive or onedrive and it works very well. the internet has many good guides on symlinking.
make sure to use 7th heaven mod manager and at least use 60fps mod and maybe modern spell names esp if you play other ff games. there are even mod for higher definition models/backgrounds, and upscaled cutscenes (although i didnt like them, i think theyre kinda ai upscale and it looked weird)

I've loved this game since I was a child. FF7 stands like a monument, pure and inviolate, yet gracefully aged, against a blurry backdrop of rogue-lite, microtransaction slop. In these chaotic and uncertain times, FF7 reminds us that great creative visionaries once made video games.
Through the weaving of a dystopian world of steampunk high fantasy (I love Final Fantasy) emerges the classic hero's quest with tones of self-discovery, betrayal, overcoming and renewal. Cloud's arc contains antihero and hero lines—he begins as kind of a nihilist and sees little point in activism, but changes to defend the world despite his own impurity. Incredibly relevant, and certainly timeless.
As a political message, it elevates themes of anticapitalism, environmentalism, strength through community, giving power to the people, and maintaining optimism in the face of bleakness. As an RPG, its character and ability (materia) development schemes balance intuitiveness with intricacy. As software, it contains so much curiosity in its mechanics and architecture that game designers still discuss it today.
I could go on, but you get it.
Jeu exceptionnel du début à la fin, les ost sont folles les graphismes sont géniaux même encore aujourd'hui, les personnages sont super attachants (aerith reste la meilleure), l'histoire est dingue. Love the game. This is a terrible iteration. I've started play throughs multiple times and I picked it up again recently forgot why I'd stopped. No save files hmm... Okay started a new run 3 weeks later log in no save files. Oh... yeah that's right it randomly deletes your saves. Real pain.
Was so glad that I got this before the remaster. They completely lock people out of the older - and yet better - version of the game.
This is inexcusable in this modern age.
Why lock the game due to sunsetting? No one can play it unless you are a veteran buyer.

Un clásico de la antigua Squaresoft. Esta versión es similar a la de Playstation original, con una traducción horrenda al español (si entienden ingles es mejor usar ese idioma). Los controles pueden ser raros porque inicialmente solo se pensaron para computadora. Mas allá de eso, es un muy buen juego en todos los aspectos y tiene muchos mods por parte de la comunidad.

前一阵看到ff7原版居然出了个新版，上号看一眼之余忽然发现自己居然一直没给ff7原版写一下评测，现补上。。。
原版ff7可以说是能列为我个人top5的游戏之一，即使过了这么久，我仍对游戏的一幕幕画面记忆犹深
其实抛开画面和古旧的机制不谈，ff7现在看仍是一个很前卫的游戏，在设定上既有剑与魔法， 同时融合了蒸汽朋克风格的美术设计与赛博朋克风格的政治体系的世界观，这个丰满而庞大的世界给了人极强的探索欲望
游戏最长的长板就是他的剧情，而拔高他剧情高度的便是他的文字。本作的文字简洁凝练，寥寥几句便能把人物形象和剧情交代丰满，即使是低模小人，由于高质量文本，也能让人过剧情的时候及有代入感。同时原版的剧情衔接非常紧密，即使流程非常之长，章节很多人物也很多，但一口气玩下来一气呵成毫无拖泥带水，非常爽啊。汉化组也是厨力发作，汉化质量超棒
同时游戏的玩法也没有拖后腿，atb的回合制玩法给我一种玩动作游戏的紧张感，唯一值得诟病的就是经常有剧情把你魔晶石全给卸了，好不容易给对友搭配好的魔晶石又要重新配一遍，实在难受。游戏堆料丰富的可怕，很难想象这是1997年ps1时代的游戏。玩了好几个小时出了米德加发现游戏才刚刚开始，陆行鸟，游艇，浮空挺。平原，沼泽，山脉，各种各样的地貌以及风味各异的城镇与村庄，玩下来一直有新鲜感，期待着之后会遇到什么。不过流程推进挺容易卡关的，好在有非常详细的图文攻略，跟着走玩着就很舒服了。地雷遇敌也挺烦，但是我感觉贴着墙根走会降低遇敌的概率，不知道是心理作用还是真有说法。。。
游戏的音乐简直是艺术品级别的，即使是通关后我也会经常听
如果能忍受究极old画面以及old操作的话，非常推荐一试，同时很推荐用手柄玩，键鼠操作简直是反人类

they broke it. my controller doent work, i have 3 conreollers wired and wireless that worked a week ago with ff7 and now none of them work. i uninstalled and reinstalled, i see nothing new or extra, and se no way to pick which version i want to play since i bought the game 5 yrs ago. im just gonna play in retroarch with mods. square is a ♥♥♥♥ company now. im done with them after 30yrs. disgusting.

After playing Final Fantasy VII, I was blown away by this classic Japanese role-playing game from the last century. I played the original version because I was hooked on the story after the first two installments of the remake and couldn’t wait to see what happens next. I’m even more eager for the release of the third remake, and I hope the final installment will bring me some amazing surprises. I highly recommend you give Final Fantasy VII a play!

This version is ideal, especially for playing with some essential mods that allow you to play with analog controls at 60fps, and with corrected translations, which Square Enix never bothered to do.

Final Fantasy VII is a truly remarkable game. The story and characters were interesting and engaging, and the world was captivating to traverse and explore. The gameplay is very satisfying, and is very open to different play styles thanks to the versatility of the materia system. There's a very good reason why this game blew up upon its release, and why people still look back on it so fondly. If anyone considers themselves fans of RPGs, they absolutely must have this game under their belt.

Replayed thru this gem again with 7th heaven, Ninostyle, and the archeology cut plus some texture mods.... man its good, its been such a fun month just reliving this world and its characters. if you miss turn based combat and you want a fantastic story to boot, you can't miss with FF7
one of the all time great JRPGs, if not the best JRPG. The new ones come pretty close, but nothing will replace the classic ATB system in the old Final Fantasy games.

It was a pretty solid game. Historically an important turning point in the JRPG genre.
It's a bit dated but I feel it aged well enough. It's early PSX graphics are old enough to be quaint and an aesthetic more than just limitations of the time.
I say check it out.
Square delisted the original PC release, which while imperfect allowed one to play basically the same PSX experience, or a more modernized filtered version.
They replaced it with the "updated" version which is just bad.

Amazing and I wonder why would square removed the 2013 version because honestly I see no difference with the 2026 edition. All they added was a noob friendly option which is starting to annoy me with these devs.

Grande clássico e melhor que o remake
This is FF7. I played it on release. I've played it on countless other systems countless times. This game is better than the remake. The remake is great. But its based on THIS. Its old school. But play it. Its really good. Just grind, just a little bit, in each area, and you'll never have a problem.
What a journey. I have finally completed this game after years of shelving it by Disc 2 and forgetting about it.
I think 7th Heaven really made it more enjoyable this time with better visuals from Ui, backgrounds and models. Thank you to those modders.
Coming from the remake and with knowledge of the story before hand. Very old game so its unavoidable, but overall I see why its so loved. Great story, great characters and great game mechanics! I originally thought it would feel like a chore to play the game due to its age but glad to have been wrong. I missed a few things here and there but that's small enough reason to give it a replay. Realistically wouldn't need a reason to play such a beautiful game again. I love Final Fantasy VII, glad to have found this game through the remake.

Summary: FF7 is the golden goose of the series and while I have nostalgia for it too, it is far from the best and I do think it is over hyped. That being said, FF7 is an incredible game with a rich world built around it in subsequent media to flesh out the characters and story. Cloud is a fantastic protagonist and while I prefer the black haired guy more, Clouds personal journey through FF7 is an emotional racetrack and unravelling the mysteries of his past was the greatest moment of this game by far complete with the music, the companionship, the heroism, it had it all.
I must take a moment to glaze Sephiroth. While FF7 is over hyped, Sephiroth is not. This man has aura. His tale is one of tragedy which you can empathise with and you feel for him over the course of the game. That small section during the flashback where he is on your team really gives the player that "oh ♥♥♥♥" moment when you see just how more powerful he is compared to your party and you really get that sense that you are infinitesimal compared to him and completely outmatched. One Winged Angel is arguable one of the greatest and most iconic boss themes in gaming. his design is memorable and everyone loves him which is a sign of a good villain.
Materia is a great customisation tool to freely build your team around. Some party members have "roles" but these are hardly important with the boost materia can give your team and I enjoy having the variety.
The story of FF7 is possibly the best in the series thus far thanks to the characters and it has almost a perfect cast but I cannot stand Cait Sith. I think it is worth a play despite the remakes existing you can never go wrong with the roots.
One of the greatest games ever made....thats all I have to say about that.

got this port just because we getting a enhanced version and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ no wonder why... they have you literally make a account and ♥♥♥♥ and then the game sometimes softlocks with a black screen... As bad as it is i would get it on sale just so then you get the enhanced version for free
Final Fantasy VII is simply one of the greatest RPGs ever made — the story, characters, and Nobuo Uematsu's legendary soundtrack still hit just as hard decades later. The materia system is a genuine masterpiece of game design, deceptively simple on the surface but endlessly deep if you want to push it. I'd strongly recommend grabbing the 7th Heaven mod manager to get 60fps and some quality-of-life improvements, which elevate the experience without compromising the original's charm. The one real frustration is that Square Enix requires a login account to play a 1997 single-player game — it's an unnecessary annoyance, especially on Steam Deck. That gripe aside, this is essential gaming history that absolutely deserves a place in any RPG fan's library.
The go-to RPG for anybody. Still holds up nearly 30 years after release. I think this has more playability than the Remakes personally.
Still has more soul than the remake. Took me almost 60 hours to beat but the epic journey was worth it!

my personal favorite game of all time. i had to play it again after nearly 20 years because the ff7 remake and rebirth were terrible. ive been having more fun with these outdated pixels than fully 3D rendered cloud and aerith. what a jrpg is supposed to look like

Un hermoso viaje a la infancia, una historia mucho más adulta, un sistema que quizás, hoy en día, muchos consideran molesto, pero a mí me sigue pareciendo entretenido, si piensan que el sistema de Materias es molesto, prueben el VIII y después me cuentan.
Este juego es una obra maestra de la época en términos de Mecánicas, Arte y Narrativa, personajes con personalidad y motivación interesantes (Cloud y Vincent son mis favoritos) y una cantidad insana de exploración, materias e ítems de todo tipo.
Tiene fallas, como los fallos gráficos o la interacción nula con los escenarios prerrenderizados, y esta es una queja personal, Vicent tendría que haber sido un personaje del Cast principal, en vez de ser opcional como Yuffie, Cid se siente más como secundario que Vincent, pero es solo mi opinión, este juego es excelente y un "si o si" para cualquier fan tanto del RPG de estilo clásico como moderno.
I highly doubt I need to sit here and legit write an extensive reason of why FF7 is such a fantastic game in the big year 2026. I am, however, writing this to say that it is indeed still worth picking up the OG FF7 despite the re-release coming because we don't know the price of it and $10 to get both versions in your library is hard to beat. Plus 7th Heaven is a godsend for this game
